There was no question that host Interboro gave Strath Haven much more of a battle at South Avenue Athletic Complex in a 27-13 setback Friday night than the Bucs had offered in a one-sided loss to the Panthers last season.

Many of the players’ names were different from those of the contestants in the 2021 game, but more than a few were the same.

And there were some statistics that changed a bit a year on.

After his players had joined the band and the student body in singing the school song, winning coach Kevin Clancy offered some interesting reflections on what took place as he began his 32nd season in charge of the Haven sideline.

“I’m happy with the team effort,” Clancy said. “We knew we were in for a battle coming over here. That’s a good team we played, and hats off to the Interboro coaching staff for the job they have done.

“Our kids stayed strong and held off their surge at the end. That (Abu Kamara) is an outstanding football player. We have a lot of respect for him, and our plan was to keep the ball as much as we could, which kept him on defense for all of that time.”

For three quarters the East’s swarming, relentless defense had the West offense bottled up in the 44th Hero Bowl Thursday night.

All the West had was seven points and not much movement. Yet there was no panic in the team made up of Central League all-stars.

“We just had to figure out what they were doing and make adjustments,” said Ridley All-Delco quarterback John Heller.

With Heller leading the way the West scored nine points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 16-12 victory over the East at Cardinal O’Hara High School. After struggling early, Heller completed five of his last nine pass attempts for 66 yards and a touchdown. He finished with 137 yards passing and two touchdowns to earn offensive MVP honors for the West.

It was his final drive, though, that proved to be the difference for the West. Heller drove the West 68 yards in seven plays and capped the march on a three-yard run by Ridley teammate Tahmir Mills with 2:10 left to play in the game.

Junior Sam Milligan put his arm around the shoulders of senior running back/linebacker Chase Barlow as the Strath Haven duo walked slowly toward the exit gate Friday night at Phil Marion Field

Milligan, the quarterback, had handed off to Barlow for the last time on the final play of Haven’s unforgettable season. Barlow took the carry at the 1-yard line, but was stopped from scoring as time expired.

Imhotep Charter, the juggernaut from District 12, had put the finishing touches on a 36-0 shutout victory in the PIAA Class 5A semifinal round.

“That was the best team I have ever played,” said Milligan, who gave it all he had at quarterback, defensive back and punter. He was particularly excellent on defense, making several open-field tackles on a laundry list of Division I-level skill performers on Imhotep.

“We never gave up, but that’s how we are,” said Barlow, who was on the field the entire time, too, and put forward another gutsy performance at linebacker. “That’s Strath Haven football.”

No. 2 Strath Haven and No. 1 West Chester Rustin played for the District 1 Class 5A championship Friday night. And, boy, did they deliver. In a game full of twists and turns, it seemed to call for a special ending.

A decision by Panthers coach Kevin Clancy and determination by quarterback Sam Milligan provided just that.

In the second overtime, running back Chase Barlow plunged forward for a one-yard touchdown. The Panthers trailed by a point. Clancy, with a district title on the line, went for the win.

Milligan received the snap under center, faked a handoff, and scrambled to his right. He tucked the ball in and ran as fast as he could toward the pylon. He stretched it over the goal line and was bumped out of bounds. The sideline judge raised two arms in the air to indicate a successful two-point conversion, giving Haven a 34-33 double-overtime championship triumph.

Strath Haven had an 11-point lead early in the second half, but Marple Newtown was on the march.

As the Tigers drove into Panthers’ territory, Strath Haven assistant coach Eric Hollingsworth yelled out to the defense, “I hope you guys know you’re in a dogfight.”

Senior defensive end/tight end Nate Perlman heard Hollingsworth’s words and so did senior defensive back/running back Chase Barlow. Neither had to be told they were indeed in a scrap at George L. King Field.

“We knew,” Perlman said. “Marple’s a great team and we knew they were going to come out and give us everything they had. We knew we had to go out there and give it our best.”

The Panthers (11-1) turned it up a notch on both sides of the ball to earn a trip to the District 1 Class 5A semifinals with a 42-16 victory over the Tigers in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.

The luxury of having a stable full of running backs, as Strath Haven does, is that any one of those ball carriers can go off on a given night. Friday night, it was Matt Shuler’s turn.

The senior Panther amassed 226 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns as second-seeded Strath Haven rolled over No. 15 Upper Merion, 35-0, in the opening round of the District 1 Class 5A playoffs at George L. King Field.

Shuler ran for two touchdowns, caught a pass for a TD and returned a kickoff for another score. That’s a pretty full night.

“I was hoping for a punt return (for a touchdown) and maybe a pick-six,” Shuler said with a smile. “I’m feeling good. “I’m excited to move on.”

The win gets Strath Haven (10-1) a date at home with Central League rival Marple Newtown next week in the district quarterfinals. Strath Haven pinned a 41-13 loss on the Tigers (8-3) in the second week of the season.

Through a satisfying regular season that invited visions of postseason success, almost everything Strath Haven tried on offense worked as designed. To Sam Milligan, though, there was still one thing missing.

Just once, the Panthers’ quarterback occasionally would think to himself, he wouldn’t mind running a ball into the end zone.

“I was definitely missing that,” Milligan said Friday, with a smile. “So it was exciting.”

Milligan, the junior orchestrator of Kevin Clancy’s balanced attack, finally broke through in a 33-7 triumph over host Radnor at Conestoga, then commenced to making it a habit. In the second quarter, Milligan unloaded a 57-yard keeper for his first score of the season before adding a three-yard TD run in the third. A two-point conversion run after Matt Shuler’s third-quarter score made him the high scorer with 14.

Strath Haven’s offense has been on some kind of roll. The Panthers topped the 40-point mark for the second straight week and the sixth time this season to celebrate senior night in style with a 42-6 victory over Lower Merion Friday night at George L. King Field. Strath Haven has scored 119 points in its last three games while allowing just 26. It’s the second straight week the Panthers won by that same score. Strath Haven (8-1 overall, 7-1 Central League) is averaging 38.2 points per game. Lower Merion quarterback Mekhai Smith kept the Aces in the game early. Jack Lledo's five-yard TD run in the second quarter got Lower Merion within 14-6, but it was all Strath Haven after that. The Panthers tallied three times in the second period to take a 35-6 lead into the locker room. After LM cut the deficit to eight, Matt Shuler scored on a five-yard run and then took a Sam Milligan pass 54 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 28-6. Chase Barlow added a seven-yard touchdown run to give the Panthers a 29-point cushion at the break. Strath Haven had 271 total yards at halftime, according to Havenfootball. net, and Shuler had three TDs. He scored on a 53-yard run in the fourth quarter. Smith was 12-for-18 for 176 yards at intermission. Bob Fooskas closed out the scoring for Strath Haven with a seven-yard run with 8:03 to play in the third quarter. It was his second TD of the game. He opened the scoring with an eight-yard run in the first quarter.

The Panthers close out the regular season on the road next Friday night against Radnor at Conestoga High School. Strath Haven is ranked second in the District 1 Class 5A power rankings. Last night the Strath Haven Grid Iron Club celebrated the 2000 PIAA 5A state football championship season by hosting many of the players that made that championship a reality.  20+ years later it is still the ONLY 2 football championship won by a Delco team (Strath Haven had also won the previous championship in 1999).

It was a great interview with lots of memories and football talk as well as their thoughts that they shared with the current members of the Strath Haven football team.  Take a listen!

Strath Haven used a solid, consistent ground attack to defeat Conestoga 35-14 in a matchup of one-loss teams teams Friday evening at Teamer Field.

The Panthers (6-1 overall, 5-1 Central League) pounded away for more than 300 rushing yards on 46 carries, controlling the ball and the clock. Running backs Chase Barlow and Matt Shuler consistently ran inside for solid gains. Strath Haven did not have to punt and the Panthers racked up 15 first downs in the first half alone.

The biggest Panther ground gainer was Barlow, who ran 27 times for 186 yards and scored three touchdowns. While Barlow has been one of Strath Haven’s leading runners this fall, it has been from the halfback position. He moved to fullback due to an injury to Anthony Crawford, who broke his ankle last week.

Three times Strath Haven senior Charlie Shankweiler visualized how his 31-yard field goal attempt could bring redemption Friday night.

Once after a Panthers timeout to set up the kick with the game tied and three seconds left, again after a timeout by Springfield and finally after another timeout to ice him. In the back of Shankweiler’s mind was the PAT attempt blocked after the first Panthers touchdown.

Moments after quarterback and placeholder Sam Milligan told him, “You got this, you do this every day in practice,” Shankweiler split the uprights as time expired to give the Panthers a walk-off 17-14 Central League victory over Springfield. Shankweiler disappeared in a sea of bodies, a miss earlier this season against Haverford forgiven.

“We couldn’t let it happen again,” Shankweiler said. “You’ve just got to stay focused, take deep breaths. It’s simple stuff. I play goalkeeper for the soccer team. I know how to handle pressure. It’s simple stuff.” Milligan did a solid job of grabbing the high snap and planting the ball for Shankweiler. Except for missing a deep throw, Milligan was flawless and gritty on the last possession of the game, converting a huge fourth-and-one at the 41-yard line of the Cougars with a sneak up the middle. A misfire there and the Cougars’ Luke Coary, who also has a big leg, could have been a few pass completions from ending it.

In a terrific football game on a beautiful day the Freshman Panther football team handed the Garnet Valley Jaguars their first defeat of the season, 26-20.

It was a well played game for both teams on both sides of the ball but the Panthers took the lead late in the 4th quarter and then recovered a Jag fumble with less than two minute to play, sealing the victory.

By Matt Smith

The most anticipated football game in Delaware County this year featured Garnet Valley and Strath Haven, two of three undefeated Central League teams entering play Friday.

The showdown marked the final meeting between Delco’s two winningest coaches, Strath Haven’s Kevin Clancy and GV’s Mike Ricci, who will retire after the season. Considering how well both teams have performed, the throngs of fans in attendance likely expected a competitive game.

Alas, the game didn’t quite live up to expectations on the scoreboard. The Jags were in complete control from the opening kick at a jam-packed George L. King Field, rolling to a 42-7 win. Garnet Valley (5-0, 4-0) is now one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the Central League, and will travel to Ridley next week to face the Green Raiders, who improved to 5-0 with a victory Friday night over Radnor.

Compared to the rest of the league, however, Garnet Valley is on another planet right now. The Jaguars are just way too good, too big, too fast. Against the Panthers, that was evident from the very start.

Strath Haven Anthony Crawford was carried by his offensive linemen Saturday night.

Literally.

The junior fullback needed to gain two yards on fourth down late in the fourth quarter of Strath Haven’s 49-35 victory at Haverford. The brawny Crawford is extremely difficult to tackle when he’s running behind his line, but he required a friendly boost on this particular play. He ran straight ahead, got hoisted in the air and stretched for the first down.

“I got stopped there, and they carried me over,” Crawford said. “They’re just a bunch of dogs and they balled out all game.”

he offensive line of Jack Beck, Nick Filios, Ethan Barrar, Jake Millett and Aiden Williams dominated and made life easier for Haven’s three-pronged rushing attack. Crawford and Chase Barlow are the thunder. Matt Shuler is the lightning.

Kevin Clancy’s Wing-T offense did its job exceptionally well for a third straight week. The Panthers (3-0, 2-0 Central) have scored 139 points in 12 quarters.

Friday night was all about revenge for Nate Perlman and the Strath Haven football team.

Sweet revenge.

“They beat us last year and we were down after our loss to them,” said Perlman, the Panthers’ outstanding defensive end/linebacker. “We wanted to prevent that this year.”

Perlman was referring to Strath Haven’s defeat at Marple Newtown last October. It was the second game of a six-week season, but the setback proved costly in the long run for the Panthers, who coughed up a 10-point third-quarter lead en route to a three-point loss.

The Panthers claimed third place in the Central League and finished 5-1 overall. Meanwhile, Marple Newtown won five straight to start the year and earned a spot in the Central League championship game against Garnet Valley.

It was a spot the Panthers thought should have belonged to them.

The realization set in last week for Jaris Adams, that the end of the football season and his Strath Haven career was near. For the less perceptive Panthers, the running back made sure to provide plentiful reminders Saturday, in the huddles, during pregame and at halftime, with a vocal assist from classmate Alex Hemingway.

Adams refused to be denied in his finale, leading the way in a quintessential Strath Haven performance. He carried 26 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns, leading a workmanlike 35-21 win over Haverford Saturday in a Central League playoff game.

The victory sends Adams and his fellow Panthers (5-1) out as winners in the matchup of runners-up in the league’s Class 6A and 5A divisions. It’s Strath Haven’s first win over Haverford since 2010, ending a stretch of six consecutive losses.

“It was like, man, this is my last week of practice, so I’ve got to do whatever I can do have my guys ready to roll,” Adams said. “I’m going to help my team win, and they’re going to help me do what I do.”

What they did was control the clock and move the ball in Haven’s typically steamrolling fashion. It wasn’t necessarily pretty: The Panthers only had two plays of more than 20 yards, only one in the rushing game, and their 62 carries amounted to just 241 yards, an average of 3.9 per tote.

Last year around this time, Strath Haven was making another epic run through the Class 5A football playoffs. This year the Panthers been living out of coach Kevin Clancy’s trunk, the locker room basically off limits to comply with strict COVID-19 protocols.

In 39 years of coaching, including 30 at Strath Haven, Clancy has never experienced anything as challenging as guiding a team through coronavirus protocols. And he’s never been more satisfied with the enthusiasm and grit his players have shown along the way.

“It’s a weird season but the kids are still having fun playing football and that’s what it’s all about,” Clancy said Friday after the Panthers defeated Penncrest 49-7. “The kids have worked hard, they’re easy to coach, they’ve got a great attitude and that’s made it fun. We’re a week from getting through this and we have not had an exposure (of COVID-19) on the field transmitted from football. I feel like it’s been a successful season from that standpoint.”

The Panthers (4-1) prevailed over the Lions for the 31st time in the 39-year history of the Hometown Bowl, the label attached to these opponents, their schools sandwiched around Media.
