Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today we are chatting with Kimberly Gold and dive into what caring for yourself looks like within your marriage and for yourself. Sometimes BUILDing your marriage starts with you first BUILDing Your Mental Health. Here are our highlights from this episode:

  1. Kimberly shares her milmarriage story that starts with sliding into DMs and a shift to work on physical health.
  2. She shares her journey of resentering, healing and recovering from a toxic work environment.
  3. “You can’t be a good partner when you’re not being good to yourself.”
  4. Stop using positive distractions. Be brave enough to acknowledge that you need help. Let’s stop normalizing or silencing your trauma, hurt or feelings.
  5. Know your options. Look into different health care providers like Steven A Cohen’s - Cohen Veterans Network at https://www.cohenveteransnetwork.org & providers highlighted on the Military Marriage Day app

About Kimberly

Born to a Korean woman who would become the first Korean female Chief Warrant Officer Five in the US Army, Kimberly prides herself on learning directly from her mother who taught her how to turn obstacles into opportunities.

As a military kid, Kimberly has been assigned to seven military bases and can recall attending at least five schools. In elementary school, Kimberly stayed with a babysitter when both her parents deployed for the Gulf War. Kimberly recalls a time where she deeply disappointed her patriot mother by not accepting an appointment to the Air Force Academy. In the words of Kimberly, she was “DONE” with military life. To show her mother exactly how done she was, she went on to spend the next two decades serving military communities, even deploying to Kuwait, as a humanitarian and is happily married to a foreign born spouse who serves in the Army.

Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today Bree is reflecting on three big takeaways from her in-laws 50th wedding anniversary and vow renewal. A huge thank you to Edna & Stanley Carroll for your example and support. Happy 50th! Here are our highlights from this episode:

  1. Focus on Family - Everything blooms from a focus on marriage and family. Making sacrificial decisions to put the family in a better position was a big part of what made them successful. This takes selflessness and a big picture perspective as opposed to a short term gain.
  2. Focus on Faith - The Carrolls don’t just say what they believe but also model it. They practice their beliefs and follow the order that the Bible outlines for families. It takes submission, surrender, trust, and intentionality.
  3. Focus on Selflessness - I love watching my inlaws love one another. They model showing up for one another when it matters most. This looks like taking vows seriously, especially the “for better or for worst” portion. This is something that isn’t always easy but is necessarily for a sustainable relationship.

Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today we are chatting with Air Force veteran and author Patricia Q. Throughout our talk we go back to the basics of what is needed to thrive in your family and marriage relationship. Here are our highlights from this episode:

  1. Marriage First - Make time for you to connect with your spouse. Consider scheduling a day to yourselves during TDY or deployment reintegrations before spending time with the entire family.
  2. Individual Relationships - As parents try to foster individual relationships with your kids. Take them on one on one outings or join activities that they enjoy so you each have a special connection collectively and individually.
  3. Resources - I love that we went back to basics as Patricia shared the following resources: Family Readiness, Spouse Club, Chapel, First Sergeants and fellow service families.
  4. Remember When You Were New - If you see someone new, take the first step towards them to assist.

More About Patricia:

Patricia became a mom early in her military career and spent most of her career tackling both service and motherhood. Her husband was also a member of the United States Air Force.

After retirement, Patricia worked as a contractor with the Air Force before deciding to professionally pursue her passion for writing. She published her first book in December 2022. She is currently working on a book of poetry and a companion book to her first book.

We are closing out this Roller Coaster Season on Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Throughout Season 5 we are discussing what Roller Coaster Season is as we look at the highs and lows of service marriages. We’ve unpacked what thriving can look like through communication, highlighted new resources and today we are giving practical steps to enjoy the roller coaster ride.

  1. Strap In - We as a couple need to be committed to the ride and also safe along the way.
  2. Build Up - There is tons of anticipation as you build up to moments in your relationship. Communicate what these expectations are and how you are feeling along the way.
  3. Hands Up. Sometimes it's better to throw your hands up in surrender and excitement as opposed to white knuckling it the entire ride
  4. Smile. Take metal or physical pictures of the moments along the way so you can look back at the moments.
  5. Finish Together. Stay MilMarriage Strong!

Welcome back to the Hearts & Stripes podcast. We are thrilled to have our MMD Ambassadors, Martin and Juvilyn Garcia joining us. Throughout Season 5 we are discussing what Roller Coaster Season is as we look at the highs and lows of service marriages. The Garcia’s share how Valentine's Day critics spark a conversation on the need to continue dating your spouse, communicate using their love language and how they went from contemplating divorce to thriving together in their milmarriage.

About Martin & Juvilyn:

Dynamic duo, Juvilyn and Martin. Marine Corps Couple, married for almost 10 years and strong advocates for strong military marriages! We believe you have to thrive TOGETHER to make it.

The Game Plan To Thrive Together:

  1. You have to show up for yourself before showing up for your spouse. Practice self-care, get a vision for yourself and your goals, and love yourself.
  2. Come together to support one another. Through partnership and teamwork we can build stronger relationships through encouraging one another within the marriage relationship.
  3. Acknowledge the ripple effect. The result of thriving together will impact those around you to engage in healthier relationships and collaborate with one another in the ways that you’ve modeled.

Welcome back to an exciting new season of Hearts & Stripes podcast. Season 5 is our Roller Coaster Season where we are looking at the highs and lows of service marriages. In this episode we are chatting with MMD Ambassador Sara Roberts. She shares her milmarriage story and lessons learned.

About Sara:

I have been an Air Force Reserve spouse for almost 10 years and have had the honor of supporting my husband and his squadron through 4 deployments so far. We have 2 wonderful children a 6 year old son and a very spirited 2 year old daughter. I serve as Wing Key Spouse Mentor, Reserve Spouse Mentor with MSAN and my son's Cub Scout leader on top of being a mom and wife.

Here is a quick look at the conversation highlights:

  • Reserve families are a gift to our military community. They are the continuity we need and yet their families still face challenges of deployment, reintegration and needing support.
  • Thank you to Armed Forces Insurance for recognizing military spouses through the AFI MSOY program. Check out out the 2023 Base Winners! https://msoy.afi.org
  • MMD Advice from Sara: Ask for help! We all need different levels of support in each season. Also, don't say “I’m just a military spouse”. You are valuable. Finally, ACCEPT the help. We may be helpers, but helpers need to receive help too.
  • Sara’s favorite resources:

Welcome back to an exciting new season of Hearts & Stripes podcast. We are kicking of the season chatting with Daniele , who we teamed up with to make our 2022 Disney giveaway possible. She has a heart for service families looking to bring a little Disney Magic into their lives. We are sharing the behind the scenes of how this idea was two years in the making and how you can start your planning to visit the happiest place on earth.

Danielle is a military spouse of 7 years and mother of 2. A few years ago, after her first child was born, Danielle and her husband decided she would walk away from teaching Special Education for a bit to stay at home and provide stability while he travels. She had a deep longing to continue to provide for her family and took her love of all things Disney and became a travel planner. Having worked at Disney for a few years, she now loves being able to help families, especially those within our community, plan amazing vacations and create lasting memories together.

Welcome back to Hearts & Stripes podcast. We took a Spring Break that allowed us to evaluate what is next for Hearts & Stripes Podcast and today I’m excited to share what that looks like. First and foremost, thank you for being a listener, whether you’ve listened to one episode or binge listened to them all, you are appreciated. This podcast started as my way of bridging the gap between service couples and marriage resources. The platform has grown into a national holiday, Military Marriage Day (August 14th) and a way to serve couples to meet their relationship needs. I could have never imagined this would all come from starting a podcast. Moving forward we have decided to shift from a yearly seasonal podcast to releasing seasons around Military Marriage Day and potentially again around Valentine’s Day. Here is what the new season of Hearts & Stripes has in store:

  1. Hearts & Stripes podcast is the official podcast of Military Marriage Day
  2. More engaging conversations with guest experts and average service couples sharing #milmarriage stories in an authentic way
  3. Greater focus on highlighting the resources in our MMD Resource Hub at https://www.militarymarriageday.com/resources
  4. In Depth conversations around the research and findings of our Military Marriage Survey and community marriage stats

Welcome to the Hearts & Stripes podcast! Have you heard of the CARE Method? This is my proprietary method that I use when working with clients and through my own personal goals and challenges. Today I am giving you a crash course in the CARE Method so that you can apply this action plan to your life and relationship. Grab a pen and paper and let’s get to work!

DISCUSSION

What do you want to CARE about?

C- Careful Consideration

  1. Get a clear vision of what your goal looks and feels like.
  2. Consider the cost of how to attain it.

A- Assess the Foundation

  1. What stories, beliefs, or feelings may get in the way of you reaching your vision?
  2. What do you need to address before you can truly CARE about that thing?

R- Reinforce the Structure

  1. What type of support do you need to keep you on track to CARE? Who do you need?
  2. What boundaries do you need to establish and enforce to get you to the goal?

E- Engage + Trust

  1. What actions do you need to take to truly CARE? Let’s Earn Your Stripes (EYS) and do the things!
  2. Have you decided to trust the process and trust yourself?

Welcome to Hearts & Stripes podcast. Today we are talking about therapy. In this discussion, I hope to shed the light on what therapy is and why it may be a resource more people consider to support them. Personally, I have seen a counselor and really enjoy it. This is something I’d verbally supported, but never actively engaged in until now. Lean in as we talk about therapy and share resources that may help you find a clinician near you.

DISCUSSION:

  1. What is Therapy? (Good Therapy : https://www.goodtherapy.org/what-is-therapy.html)
  2. Where can I get it?

Military OneSource: https://www.militaryonesource.mil/confidential-help/non-medical-counseling/military-onesource/free-confidential-face-to-face-non-medical-counseling/

On or Near Installation: Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC), Tricare Referral for Clinical Psychologists

Other Options: betterhelp.com , therapyforblackgirls.com , www.life-giver.org/cliniciandirectory/

  1. What types of therapy should I consider?

Non-medical counseling vs Medical counseling

Welcome to Hearts & Stripes podcast. Today we are talking about how we can better show up for ourselves so that we can better show up for our marriage, our families, our communities, and other areas. We focus on what building ourselves up looks like and ways we can do so. This aligns with our first principle that we love to highlight on the podcast, thriving personally. Being self first is not selfish and we hope this discussion during Women’s History Month encourages you to think about a new way you can build yourself up this month.

DISCUSSION: The best ways to build you

  1. Pour into yourself by listening to podcasts, participating in therapy, leaning into your faith, and/or finding a coach
  2. Get intentional about your community
  3. Advocate for yourself and what you need

Happy Black History Month! Today, on Hearts & Stripes podcast we hope to spark some excitement to think about your legacy through dreaming. In this episode I'm invited all my service couples to dream again, individually and collectively. Here are some of our big takeaways:

  1. Think about previous or new dreams personally and with your partner. What dream would yo like to reach for?

  2. Your dream will help you visualize the path to that end goal. Are you ready to lean into the dream? Are you ready to do what it takes to make it happen? (Note: This is Phase 1 in the CARE Method - Carful Consideration)

  3. Building a legacy and dreaming again will lead to you seeing more wins in your life! Dreaming is the first step, which is followed by action.

  4. If your dream doesn't scare you, it's not big enough. Your dream isn't purpose focussed if it's all about you.

  5. Dream BIG & build your legacy!

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!! Today we are talking about V for Valentine’s. I’m sharing five things to keep in mind to strengthen your military marriage. Our goal here at Hearts & Stripes podcast is to continue to provide resources and tools to keep your relationship thriving. Keep in mind, it’s never too late to start getting intentional about your marriage. Here are five Vs for Valentine’s.

Validate : Take the time to listen and validate your spouse. A great technique to use to accomplish this is active listening. Steps to active listening include listening, empathize, repeat what is shared, normalize their feelings with understanding and bonuses are being able to add body language, eye contact & touch.

Vacation : Plan opportunities to getaway. This may look like an actual trip, staycation or even a mental getaway. It’s not about the dollar amount, but rather valuing the time spent together.

Vow : Valentine's Day is known as a day of love. Nothing says I love you like commitment and covenant. Reflecting and reminding one another of the vows that you have taken is a beautiful way to connect/reconnect or hit the reset button on your relationship.

Value : Get intentional about showing your spouse that you value them. A great way to do this is by using their love language. Saying and showing your partner that they are valued is a great way to stay #milmarriagestrong

Victory : When you win, I win & we win! It’s no surprise that we are all about celebration here at Hearts & Stripes. Acknowledging the wins in your relationship is a tip that we absolutely love sharing. It shifts your focus as a couple to positivity and progress, which can help keep the momentum going.

Representing the Space Force we have Mrs. Mollie Raymond!

Bio

Mollie Raymond is the Spouse to the First Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force. Mrs Raymond is married to General John "Jay" Raymond, the first Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force. Mollie has traveled all over the world as a military spouse and has moved 19 times during her time. She has long been a champion for military spouses and families working tirelessly to support them through promoting family engagements, building connections, and creating a sense of community. With the stand-up of the sixth and newest branch of the Armed Services, Mollie is humbled to serve alongside Jay during these historic times. Her focus will be to support and advocate for Space Families while upholding the Space Force’s worldwide necessity, heritage, and culture.

Top Points:

The MilMarriage Story

From a church tour to a co-ed volleyball team, the Raymonds met and connected quickly based on having the same core values. After 5 months they were engaged to be married. They had a long engagement in Grand Forks, North Dakota before a PCS took them to California. That move was difficult for Mollie as her first time away from family. She describes the transition as being very difficult. In hindsight she learned the importance of working together and supporting one another through transition especially when it’s harder on one spouse more than another.

Mattrice’s Top Tips For Servant Leadership in Life & Marriage:

  • Respect what your spouse is saying. Validate your partner's feelings and acknowledge what they are communicating to you. This will help make your spouse feel understood and loved.
  • “Listen more and talk less.” Mollie shares how key communication is and creates dedicated time to listen. Making a point to set aside time to talk and share what's on one another plate is .
  • Affirm and compliment your spouse. “It’s important to lift one another up… He needs to hear those things.” Mollie highlights how they
  • Marriage is a partnership. Being a team member, working out goals, capitalizing on strengths and respecting one another are key in marriage and leadership. “Everyone brings something to the table.” Mollie continues by stating,“Trust, integrity, communication, those are all a part of leadership and essential in our marriage.”

Marriage & Leadership Advice:

  • Embrace opportunity. You may not always succeed, but you learn and grow from them.
  • Make time together a priority and have fun. Take advantage of the 5ks and activities on installation.
  • Be aware of when your spouse needs a pick-me-up and make time to do things together.
  • A good leader admits when they are wrong. Be humble, forgive and be forgiven.

Representing the Marine Corps we have Mattrice Williamson!

Bio:

Mattrice Williamson is a Hospitality Director and Special Events Manager. She has spent nearly three decades leading, coaching, mentoring and supporting military families. Leading, learning, and legacy building is how Mattrice has chosen to journey through military life with her Marine. Mattrice’s personal and professional career path has afforded her the opportunity to work and serve with several non-profit organizations. Servant leadership is a lifestyle for Mattrice as she enjoys sharing her “TAGS” (Talent, Ability, Gift, and Skills) with others.

As a 27-year Marine Corps spouse and mother of three, Mattrice has had the opportunity to navigate through multiple deployments, relocations, career challenges and life changes. She has been inspired by mentors in her life to find her voice and tell her story; she encourages others to do the same. Her purpose and passion drive her to continue leading and motivating others to be ‘mission ready’ for whatever life brings. Living in Purpose on Purpose is their family motto.

Top Points:

  • The MilMarriage Story Mattrice dated her husband to be through their college years and made the 2% club of Naval Academy couples to survive all four years. The couple met in church in the 90s and started as friends. She credits the strength of their relationship to their foundation of friendship and being great listeners. The Williamsons married in 1994.

Mattrice’s Top Tips For Servant Leadership in Life & Marriage:

  • Understanding and mutual respect are key. Know and respect who each person is as individuals. She notes the importance of being committed to the relationship and the journey as you operate with understanding & mutual respect.

  • Find mentorship. Seek it out and connect with others so you can ask, “will I survive this?”. Mattrice recalls that her mentors were in her life for a moment, but she soon became the mentor. Paying it forward is a part of being a leader.

  • “You have seasons in your life. Those seasons come and go.” Mattrice learned to step back and edit her life as the seasons change. She asked herself, “Who was I between the leaves of the tree?” Introspection is key at all seasons.

  • Mattrice’s husband encouraged her to stop looking for the mentor she felt she needed and step into being that mentor and pouring into others. Her philosophy of servant leadership is modeled as she presently supports and mentors spouses.

  • As a Marine Corps spouse and mom she finds ways to connect with other people & families. As a family, the Williamsons are intentional about plugging in with Marine & Family Programs for orientations, programs and workshops. The more Mattrice learned and applied, the better she could connect by simply getting to know others. She became an advocate for our military resources, because she personally experienced loneliness in earlier years due to not knowing about what was available to her.

Marriage & Leadership Advice:

Resources are underutilized. When programs are not utilized they will go away as it’s seen as a waste of resources. “If you know something that has worked for you, share it!...Join the club.”- Mattrice Williamson

The responsibility is with each of us. You can be a leader right where you are by sharing the resources you are aware of.

It’s a new year and we are coming in strong with the Marriage & Leadership series! In the next few weeks we will hear from our Armed Forces leaders as each shares their marriage stories, lessons learned and advice for #milmarriage. This series demonstrates that caring for our military families means that we care for our military marriages, which is a priority amogst our leaders. Lean in as we have a heart to heart to gain lessons on love, marriage and leadership with those shaping our service branches for a better tomorrow.

Kicking us off in true Air Force fashion is none other than, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass.

Bio

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass represents the highest enlisted level of leadership, and as such, provides direction for the enlisted force and represents their interests, as appropriate, to the American public and to those in all levels of government. She serves as the personal adviser to the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale, and proper utilization and progress of more than 600,000 Total Force Airmen. Chief Bass is the 19th chief master sergeant appointed to the highest noncommissioned officer position.

Chief is married to Rahn Bass, a retired Army First Sergeant.

Chief’s Top Points:

The MilMarriage Story

They at Ft Bragg, NC NCO Club in June of 1993. Dated off and on for 3 years and recently celebrated 25 years of marriage.

“We don’t get caught up as much in the single day as we do cherishing everyday with one another.” - CMSAF Bass

Chief shares that they found their battle rhythm of being in a mil to mil relationship through trial & error. They learned through error that they needed to prioritize time together. “We get eyeball to eyeball and…put away all the devices.” - CMSAF Bass

Chief shares about having meaningful conversation with her spouse. They are more meaningful about caring for their relationship today than they’ve ever been and appreciate individual time. “I just need you to listen and not fix things.” - CMSAF Bass

Chief models how to allow your partner to mentally prepare for discussions by stating, “When you have time, I really need to talk to you about something, but it should take about 20 minutes of focused time.” This allows them to come to the conversation prepared, as opposed to demanding to talk whenever only one individual is ready.

When asked, “How does your marriage impact your leadership?” Chief acknowledges the benefits of differencering personalities & learning from one another. How the truth coming from your spouse is much needed and the, “marriage makes me a better person and a better Airman” - CMSAF Bass

Happy Holidays! During this season of gratitude and joy we are going back and unwrapping the gems found in past episodes that we may need to listen to again before 2022. Joining me for this Unwrap & Recap series is my guest co-host Juvilyn Garcia. Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage.

Today we are recapping episode 054 with Nate & Felicia Wells : Two Careers, One Family!

Bree’s Takeaways

  • Joint spouse relationships or mil to mil is such a challenge. I’m grateful to get a glimpse of this with my friends Nate & Felicia (we hooked them up btw, so you’re welcome) and shout out to Nate’s book of poetry.
  • Talking to functional, communicate with your spouse, manage expectations, and creating a career plan that’s complementary
  • Dual military couples are encouraging. Both have a career and they are figuring out how to accomplish their goals together.

Juvilyn’s Takeaways

  • Loved how their stories of how they met were so different and it was super entertaining. They are an extremely relatable couple.
  • Watching dual military couples make it work is so commendable. They come together to make their family work. “Your family should be successful” - Felicia Wells
  • Being on the same page, mutual respect & understanding is huge. This takes effective communication, not talking at your spouse, but talking to your spouse. Take ownership, apologize, be conscious of tone and really listen to your spouse.
  • We fix what’s broken versus throwing it away. Applying this to your marriage will make all the difference. Stay committed to your spouse. We want to see those hearts in the comments if this resonates with you.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

What’s next in 2022 for Hearts & Stripes?! Listen to the end and get a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Today we are recapping episode 048 Patrice Washington Connected in Marriage & Purpose!

Bree’s Takeaways

  • This was our season 2 opening episode with my coach & client Patrice Washington and I love that she said the foundation of their relationship is friendship
  • I personally live by the 6 pillars of wealth that Patrice teaches on, I’m a product of her coaching program and I love her book Redefine Wealth For Yourself. I’ve loved the Command the Stage program, Purpose to Platform and continue to work with her as I grow personally and professionally.
  • Chase Purpose not Money = 6 Pillars of Wealth, which are Fit, People, Space, Faith, Work, Money. We will be working on our Fit & Faith Pillar as we go into 2022!

Juvilyn’s Takeaways

  • As the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year, this was our hardest duty station and it humbled me. I didn’t realize how many people were watching and encouraged by my journey.
  • It’s important to have a friendship. Continuing to date your spouse is so crucial. If you don’t invest in your spouse, your marriage won't thrive!
  • Keep the spark alive. Flirt and compliment your spouse. Continuously get to know your spouse as things change over time.

Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage.

Today we are recapping episode 056 Heather Campbell Fueling Your Life!

Bree’s Takeaways

  • They allowed another couple to speak life into their marriage & accept the help of community at a time when she said “I didn’t sign up for babies in the arctic”
  • With huge stressors they went from survival mode to having to deal with the “holes in the boat” by effective communication and deciding to stay
  • Grief is not just when you lose a person. We need to all grieve the losses or separation from friends, family, jobs and other areas of our lives that take an emotional toll.
  • Food insecurity is such a real issue in our community and I love Heather’s approach to meeting this need in our community with her background.

Juvilyn’s Takeaways

  • It’s easy to mask our issues in #milmarriage. Not taking care of those issues makes it even more difficult along the way.
  • Survive mode = unmet needs. It takes longer and is harder to work through when we don’t address those unmet needs when they show up.
  • The first two years we were on the verge of divorce because we weren’t addressing the issues within it. You can only be in survival mode for so long until the unmet needs end in an explosion.

Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage.

Bree’s Takeaways

  • Sandra is my biz bestie (hey girl hey - Queens, Connecticut & Jersey), I’ll be speaking at her Funnel Building Retreat in February!
  • Your partner is an asset & is complementary to your life and how she decided to lean into entrepreneurship which I could so identify with.
  • Love how transparent she is on the identity crisis & mental health challenges that we can face. IDENTITY Course here:

Juvilyn’s Takeaways

  • Your spouse has to be complementary. I’m successful in my small business because my spouse has my back.
  • We are truly more than just a spouse. You should still be you! Metal health is crucial and you have to take care of yourself. “... I want to be successful as more than a spouse” - Sandra Ocasio
  • This episode was super relatable and I love her will to thrive. “It doesn’t matter where I’m at or where I’m going, I’m going to thrive” - Sandra Ocasio

Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage.

Bree’s Takeaways

  • I really enjoyed doing the marriage & faith series, episodes 87-91.

  • Beth Runkleof Cru Military was so transparent about her initial bitterness & even said she “hated” the military lifestyle so it’s great to hear how her heart was changed through bible studies and marriage conferences to not just draw closer to her spouse but also our military community.

  • I will try to host a small group study on marriage. When you have to lead, you learn more.

Juvilyn’s Takeaways

  • Marriage is sacrificial. We don’t know what we sign up for, but putting your faith first makes all the difference.

  • The joint calling. It was huge that she saw that they were called to do this work together as often we talk on individual calling.

We Hope You Had A Happy Thanksgiving!

Outserving is Contagous:

  1. The kids helped with the move so we treated them to ice cream and the girls recieved mini mani, pedis while we stayed in Billeting/TLF.

  2. My squadron, 5 CES, made me feel extremely supported as we navigated our move so I was intentional about writing each of them a farewell letter and gifting them WarBull Name Tapes.

  3. My spouses squadron, 69 BS, took on the heavy lifting to help move us out so we treated them to a round on us. BONUS: The squadron CC out served us by sending a letter to my husbands parents saying how grateful he was to have had him in the squardon!!

  4. Our Shreveport/Bossier family helped us prep the house and off load the truck so we had a Wing Stop family night. We will continue to try to out serve them throughout our time at this location, because thats what family does.

  5. My spouse & I outserved one another by doing a post PCS trip to Las Vegas where we enjoyed shopping, beautiful dinners and kid free time together to rejuvinate.

Pro Tip: Plan a post PCS activity or vacation to reconnect.

Married & Moving Part 2 Top Tips:

  • Ask For Help!

  • Ask the unit you are leaving AND joining. This is a great way to get support, say farewell and meet your new community.

  • Ask family readiness. They may have a list of support organizations that can help you transition.

  • Ask the church. If you find a church that you are interested in connecting with, reach out. You'll be surprised to see that they are willing to help you move, bring a meal and introduce you to others in the community.

  • Ask family! Share the effort with your imediate family member and let them feel a part of the move. Make it a reunion and see if other family members are willing to help you move and join the adventure with you.

  • Ask local organizations. If you are in a professional, social or service organization that has a local chapter, reaching out to them to get support on your move can be a huge plus.

Pro Tip! Save on moving materials by use Ziploc bags when packing small items:

Ziploc 347 Variety Total Bags, 347 Pack, Piece Assortment, clear #Ad

Married & Moving Part 1 Top Tips:

  • Effective Communicate Is Key

Effective Communication: Effective communication is defined as verbal speech or other methods of relaying information that get a point across. It also means you are able to listen, understand, and take action on what your spouse is saying.

  • How To Survive The Purge

Purge Tip 1: Ask Before You Purge - Give your spouse the opportunity to opt in or out of the purging process. They may appreciate the help and give you full reign or choose to not purge at all. Listen - Understand - Act accordingly

Purge Tip 2: Discuss Your Options - If you have the time a yard sale or resale site is great. Your partner may not want to sell certain items or may choose to be involved in the sale as they are personally connected to it. If time doesn't permit, try to look into options like curb alert, donations to shelters, or Good Will.

Purge Tip 3: Eat it! Plan to dine in and each out of the fridge and freezer to reduce throwing out tons of food. A neighbor may be willing to take some things so communicate a plan with them to help take your perishable items. Give yourself grace throughout & eat out as needed to reduce stress & boost moral within your relationships.

  • The Only Right Way Is The One You Agree On

The goal is to PCS and still like one another. Purge it all, pack it all or anythin in between! Get on the same page with whatever you decide and priorities your relationship over any one process.

We are on the final week of our Faith & Marriage Series here on Hearts & Stripes podcast. In this episode I share how prayer can impact you thriving personally, in your marriage and with your legacy. I even get transparent with sharing my prayer for marriages as it aligns with the God's picture of marriage that is outlined in the Word. Yup, I was super nervous about sharing a prayer on the podcast, but if it blesses just one person then it was totally worth the knot in my stomach and momentary discomfort.

Top Takeaways:

  1. Establish a prayer practice and faith relationship for yourself
  2. Pray together as a couple to grow closer to God as you grow closer to one another
  3. Start a legacy of faith through prayer with your family and friends

Prayer For Marriage:

My prayer for marriage is that we would each see marriage as another gift. An opportunity to draw nearer to God in His mission to be glorified and point others toward Himself. That we would embrace the chance to be sanctified, becoming more like Christ, because of the differences and challenges with our spouse. Growing our dependence on and likeness of Jesus every day. I pray our marriages would be so bizarrely unified (not perfect), fresh, and partnered with both our eyes on Christ that the world is drawn to ask "what are you looking at?" So that we, as 2 made 1, can reply with honor regarding the good news that brought us peace and core reason for our hope and ability to truly love one another.

Scripture Reference: 1 Peter 3:15 and 1 John 4:19

We are on week three of our Faith & Marriage Series here on Hearts & Stripes podcast. Today we have the pleasure to speak with Ashley Ashcraft, author of Stop Being A __ Wife. Her book walks spouses through a 40 day challenge that unveils the wife that you were created to be. Lean in as we hear her story of going from unbeliever to surrendered to the love of Jesus Christ and how she practiced fasting in a different way to completely shift her marriage relationship.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Suggested reading to prepare for a deployment season and reintegration: When War Comes Home by Chris Adsit
  • Encouragement to seek out a Christian Counselor to process your feelings, challenges and struggles.
  • What if the "problem" in your relationship isn't your spouse, but it's you?
  • Fasting from a behavior or attitude can change your relationship in 40 days.

More on Ashley:

I am a former high school English teacher, enjoying the blessing (and utter craziness) of being a stay-at-home and homeschooling mom. My husband, Tim, is an Apache helicopter pilot in the Army. Tim and I met in high school English class and married after college. Our twelve years in the military have found us stationed at Ft. Rucker, AL; Ft. Hood, TX; Ft. Bliss, TX; West Point, NY; and Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Currently, we are stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. We have three children--a strong-willed and kind-hearted daughter named Adeline; our sweet adrenaline-seeker, Lincoln; and our joyful and humorous, Isla. With our transient lifestyle and all the unknowns that the Army hands us, our faith in Christ keeps us grounded and able to handle whatever comes our way, trusting in God's plan for our family.

We are kicking off our Faith & Marriage Series here on Hearts & Stripes podcast. Today we have the pleasure to speak with Beth RunkleI of Cru Military. She serves, alongside her husband, as the director of the Central Region of Cru Military. They are missionaries to the military.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How crucial it is to have a growing relationship with the Lord to navigate the turbulent waters of military life.
  • Beth’s desire to inspire military spouses to gain insight in how to better support their spouse's calling to serve in the military and embrace their mission as a joint calling to minister to those in their community as they move around and serve their nation.
  • How to connect with and lead a Cru Military small group.

More on Beth:

Beth Runkle was married to her Air Force man during his 25 years of service which included 14 moves, 4 deployments, and 2 Command tours. For the past 4 years they worked with Cru Military as missionaries and now serve as the Central Region directors for the national team. She began a relationship with Jesus Christ a few years after marrying her military husband and says, “... my marriage was saved by us becoming believers”. During the first three years of marriage, Beth was an incredibly reluctant and bitter military wife. A relationship with Jesus dramatically transformed their marriage and taught them to continue to make deposits in their own marriage by leading others in military small group Bible studies wherever the assignment landed them. Beth has taught Bible study for 20 years and is completing a Master's in Theological Studies from Gateway Seminary.

Today's replay is from Lifegiver with Corie Weathers. Corie is a speaker at the MMD Summit and has been an advocate in the military marriage space. This interview on Lifegiver was one of my firsts so you will hear my raw, untrained responses to what I’d started and why I do what I do. Here is what I discussed.

  • Why I started the Hearts & Stripes podcast
  • We underestimate the power of our influence
  • My background as an entrepreneur in wedding and event planning & how skills used in planning a wedding can correlate to building a marriage
  • Marriage is designed to bring out the good and bad so that you can acknowledge and address it, refining
  • On the “other side” of marriage is the opportunity to love, leep over great hurdles and hope for something greater than we could ever be as individuals alone
  • "Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." - Maya Angelou
  • Marriage is a team effort
  • Communicate through prayer, communicate your needs and desires with your spouse using good timing and tact, communicate successes and use that to tackle the next thing
  • Take responsibility for what you’d like to see in your marriage
  • Brining your strengths to your marriage
  • The importance of military marriage resources and the hope them to make them attainable and visible to the service couples who need them
  • Having a career as a milspo and how your partner can help you protect your time and well-being to make you a better entrepreneur

Today's replay is from the Pillar Deployment Retreat in 2020. I had the opportunity to speak on the Power of Relationships during your deployment season. Here is what I discuss:

  • There are 3 relationships you need to be intentional about. #1 Your relationship with yourself. #2 Your marriage relationship. #3 Your relationship with everyone else.

  • How you handle each relationship will either positively or negatively impact your deployment season.

  • 1 Your relationship with self: You have power of choice. Use it to take care of you mental, physical and emotional needs.

  • 2 Your marriage relationship: Deployments are a great opportunity to build on your relationship by thinking outside the box, using effective communication and bringing new intentionality to how you care for one another.

  • 3 Your relationship with everyone else: Be cautious of how much power are you giving others in this season.

  • The CARE Method for your deployment season:

Carefully Consider if the relationship is charging you up or depleting your energy

Asses the Foundation as to if the relationship is mutually beneficial

Reinforce the Structure by either building the relationship or creating a boundary for it

Engage + Trust the help that is offered to you and listen to yourself

Surrender! We are breaking down the meaning of this word and how we can apply it in our marriage. What does it look like to go with the flow in your marriage? Does your current season require you to surrender? In this episode we challenge you to think through these questions and the definition of surrender.

In this Heart to Heart we discuss:

The act of surrender. 1. to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand * It’s Required: Sometimes you’re relationship or circumstance requires surrender.

  1. to give up completely or agree to forgo especially in favor of another
  2. It’s Agreeable: Agreeing in favor of your spouse is not a bad thing (Best interest & big picture)

  3. to give (oneself) up into the power of another especially as a prisoner

  4. It’s Strategic: What are you avoiding feeling captive of? (Prisoner of someone else’s good idea. Is this a good strategic move?

  5. to give (oneself) over to something (such as an influence)

  6. It’s Key: Surrender as an act of faith. (What is life creating through you that you may be resisting?)

Kute Blackson, author of The Magic of Surrender stated “Surrender is the password to greatness, freedom and the next level.”

We are having real talk today with Girl Confidence herself, Rachel Luna. Rachel discusses how she navigated her mil to mil marriage, as well as lessons learned from life and marriage. Rachel is a Certified Master Coach, International Speaker, Forbes rated Top 11 Inspiring Female Entrepreneurs to Follow on Instagram (@GirlConfident) + Chief Confidence Creator. She is a proud Marine Corps veteran and is here with us to share her heart.

On this Heart to Heart we discuss:

  • Mil to mil doesn't have to be "hard". She encourages us to reframe our mindset on what hard means to us and how rising to a challenge can be fun.
  • Rachel suffered from identity loss when she separated and became a milspouse and mom. Thinking that she possibly wouldn't have the opportunity to be a mom, when it became her primary role she struggled. Rachel learned to surrender the emotional attachment and embrace her present season.
  • We, in the military community, get the gift of learning how to be agile, nimble and flexible.
  • We need to put our own oxygen mask on first. Realizing that we can cross the same finish line and want the same things, but you may be in different points on the race. If the finish line still looks the same, its okay for one person t be sprinting or in different lanes. (This echoes Ep. 71 Different Seasons, take a listen!)
  • Communicate your needs, wants and desires to your spouse.
  • Comparison is the thief of joy.
  • "They need me" went from a feeling of dread to one of joy when Rachel received perspective after she successfully beat breast cancer. She encourages us to find the joy in your present works & journey.
  • Finding joy in the midst of uncertainty & in little moments.
  • Strengthen yourself mentally, emotionally & spiritually to be . Condition yourself. What would it look like to do things with intention to run the race we desire and be able to care your family.

Their Message: Be committed to each other no matter what! The military can take a lot and you can give it a lot, but at the end of the day we come home to our family and we want that to be intact.

We are wrapping up 2020 thinking about our marriage legacy!

As the Military Marriage Coach I focus on three key areas for couples to thrive. Identity focuses on introspection and creating confidence and awareness of self, which is the foundation of all other relationships. Marriage, of course, is a primary focus as we encourage couples to thrive in their relationship. Today we talk about the third, legacy.  Marriage legacy is based on my belief that our relationships have the power to bless others.  Throughout marriage, we should be intentional about planting seeds for the future and planning for impacts that may be felt far after we are gone.

Lean in to our discussion on the marriage legacy.
