Welcome to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. My name is Mack and I am interested in pretty much everything so the motto "jack of all trades, master of none" just wasn't cutting it for me; therefore, I've raised my personal standard to "jack of all trades, master of a few." Theology, poetry, stories about being a transgender Christian, and so much more await. You're more than welcome to join! Send me topic, comments, and questions on Instagram! @mackofafew Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masterofafew/support
Today's segment is about the things I'm still grateful about growing my fundamentalist upbringing. There are many things that were harmful about how I grew up, but I don't know who I'd be without the community that raised me. Fundamentalism is dangerous and toxic, but it isn't a monolithic evil, and only ever talking about the bad things only perpetuates that idea.

Hello!
As of 8/28/2021, I am officially 2 years on Testosterone! I'm so excited to share my update on my transition and I also want to talk about what it has been like transitioning a global pandemic. Missing out on celebrating milestones with friends has been really hard and I want to bring some awareness and maybe some support to others going through it too!
This is also available on YouTube with pictures to document my physical transition! - https://youtu.be/3xjT0NTHz6g

In this segment, I start retelling my story filling in gaps that I previously left out because I was ashamed of who I was before coming out and accepting my identity. I was indoctrinated from a very young age and as a result, I know I hurt people with my words and actions - here is the first part of my story of coming to terms with who I am and the obstacles I had to face to get here.

It has been over a year since my last episode and I finally think it's time to start again! In this segment, I will be explaining why I've decided to return to this podcast and also tell you a little bit of my story with conversion therapy. If you haven't watched #PrayAway on Netflix yet, please do. As a survivor of conversion therapy, it's real and damaging and only gets worse the more we avoid talking about it.

Looking back there were a lot of things going on with baby Mack and while some of it was probably the precursors to my depression or anxiety or run-of-the-mill childhood awkwardness, some of it was definitely dysphoria I just couldn't name yet. I hope this helps someone as they try to figure out their own identity.

Today, June 19th, is Juneteenth or the day we celebrate the liberation of the enslaved. On this day in 1865, the last of enslaved were informed of emancipation. Take this day to educate yourself and learn the history of enslavement and oppression in The United States. Fittingly, this is also the last segment in my series reading "We Have Never Asked Permission to Sing," a chapbook of poetry written by Black and Brown Trans people. I hope you enjoy it and you can download the book for yourself at: https://forwardtogether.org/art/we-have-never-asked-permission-to-sing/
Take this day (and everyday) to educate yourself about systemic racism and how to be actively anti-racist.

I said last week that I was going to spend a few weeks reading some poetry by Black and Brown trans people, so here is part two of that series. We probably have one week left of it after this. I hope you enjoy and download the book so you can read them over again. This poetry was written by Black and Brown trans people for a chap book called "We Have Never Asked Permission to Sing." It was released for Trans Day of Remembrance in 2019 and can be downloaded at https://forwardtogether.org/art/we-have-never-asked-permission-to-sing/
I will continue to read from this collection for the next several weeks to raise up the voices of Black and Brown trans people because the very community that gave us Pride is under attack. Find opportunities to get involved with the links below.

Hey Everyone! I guess I should say Happy Pride, but it doesn't feel like the right statement. Although, maybe it is because Pride was started by Black and Brown Trans women who fought back against the police. Pride is old school this year. This week, I want to stay focused on what matters, so this week's segment of Master of a Few is a poetry reading...but it isn't mine. This poetry was written by Black and Brown trans people for a chap book called "We Have Never Asked Permission to Sing." I am a white straight man and it's time to check my privilege and do better than silence.
Black and brown people are being murdered simply for existing and my silence does nothing to help, so I am starting by educating myself. Below are a list of resources I'm using to start that process. I hope you'll do the same.

Mental health is our topic today. I've been talking about how much happier I am than I used to be, which is so true, but today I want to talk about a concurrent reality. When taking about faith with a friend, she told me about how a family member asked what her spiritual hill to die on was. I responded that I think the phrasing makes it sound like a battle and while I will die for my faith, I won't kill for it. I'm learning what it looks like to be an evangelical who know what he believes but is also compassionate and kind and genuine in a world where evangelical holds so much more negative connotation.

Hey everyone, it's Mack, and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Does anyone else struggle with waiting? I am a notoriously impatient person and I hate feeling like there is nothing to do. This has been my struggle for the summer, but particularly in the past weeks as I have been trying to live with WWJD on the forefront of my mind. So, in this segment, I talk about what it means to be Christ-like when you are in a time of rest or waiting or frankly, helplessness. Sometimes God brings us there for rest and sometimes it's to teach us patience. I am trying to learn both. I hope this helps somebody else who is finding themselves with nothing they can do.

Hey everyone, it's Mack, and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Do you know where the motto "What Would Jesus Do?" came from? It is from an amazing book called "In His Steps" by Charles M. Sheldon. He wrote this book about the congregation of Henry Maxwell and the challenge they undertook. This challenge was to ask one question before making any decision "What would Jesus do?" and then to act accordingly regardless of the consequences. This is what I talk about in this week's segment of Master of Few.
I'm taking on this challenge and I urge you to try it to. Let's see what happens when we let Christ's example become real in our lives.

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. "Shut up" is a phrase I have heard way to many times in my life. Whether because I was socialized as a female, or because I was too liberal, or because I was too conservative, or too trans, people have regularly told me that my voice isn't worth hearing. This segment is about how we cannot shut up. Choosing to be quiet and let the majority voices have the floor unchallenged is how we lose the fights for equality and love and freedom. Someone I greatly respect and admire told me "Don't be quiet because if you are quiet then the world will never change." This is me speaking up and I hope it encourages someone else to do the same.

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. If you asked a bunch of people how they could know if someone was a Christian, what would they say? I have a feeling it wouldn't be the fact that they love too well even though that's exactly what Christ said we should be known for. Today, I want to talk about radical, obtrusive, ridiculous love; the kind of love that people see and wonder what is wrong with that person that they are able to love like that. According to Christ, it's this kind of love that is supposed to set Christians apart and in the divided hate-filled world we live in today, that kind of love is our only hope. I hope you enjoy the segment!

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious meets too much time. Does it ever amuse and concern you things people will do in the name of Jesus? I'm not saying I'm perfect and I've got this Christian life thing down; however, I am saying that it astounds me how people can treat others absolutely horribly and do it in the name of Jesus. That's today's topic; when people do Jesus wrong. I hope you enjoy!

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. This is a long one, but it's full of stories that are extremely cringy and kind of comical. I will never understand why people think they get to ask me super invasive personal questions before they know my name. I officially have 3 phrases to live by; "Mind your own damn business.", "Don't make assumptions.", and "Just hit send." Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
My book still exists!

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. I have more exciting news to share about my future and with it comes a lengthy reflection on the faithfulness of our God. Have you ever just sat down and thought about all of the things God worked out to get you where you are right now? I highly recommend it. The results of my reflections and more ramblings are included in this segment. I hope you enjoy it!

Hey everyone, it's Mack! Welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Today's topic is the fear of the unknown because after accomplishing my first week of student teaching, I'm thinking about the future and I am slightly terrified. The future is scary and I'm making my peace with that because no matter what comes, I have a faithful God watching out for me and working all things for my good. I hope this is a helpful message for someone today!

Hey everyone! It's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. This is Part 2 of a segment I did a few months ago; segment 15 - "Why Aren't You Angry". I decided to do a second part because I am angry after all and recently I've been learning that being angry is okay. I hope this episode helps someone who has been struggling with feeling guilty because of anger. It helped me to record it.

Hey everyone! It's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. It's officially Advent season, so Merry Christmas! Are you one of those people who reads the ending of a movie or book before you start at the beginning? That drives me crazy, but in life, it can be very comforting to know that the last chapter is already written. This segment is all about hope and the last chapter of our stories and how we don't have to worry about it because we have a great author! (I added a sponsorship to my podcast cause why not, I hope it doesn't bother anyone too much!)

Hey everyone, it's Mack. Welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Today's topic is gender dysphoria, my best pal. Hey everyone! It's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. On this segment, I talk a bit about my feelings about the anti-transgender memo that has emerged recently. I didn't think it would cause as much of an emotional response as it has, so here we are. I can't speak for the whole trans community, but I can speak for myself. I am Mack, I am trans, I exist, and I won't be erased.

Hey everyone, it's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Remember how I missed a week entirely? Well this segment is sorta an explanation of why. It's also really convoluted and not well planned out, but you're used to that by now. Also I'm about to break 200 plays which is amazing! Thank you all so much! Anyway, enjoy this segment about my struggles with mental health; I hope it's an encouragement or help!

Hey everyone! It's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. I get asked this question so often from very well meaning people who are very angry on my behalf. Therefore, I decided to talk about why I am not angry with various groups of people who admittedly do not treat me well or have not treated me well in the past. This ought to be a fun one. (That was actually only mildly sarcastic). Enjoy!

Hey everyone! It's Mack and welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Full disclosure, this segment is a mess. I had a fantastic topic, but I also have a terrible memory and poor planning skills. As a result, this is a little bit about redemption, a little about being bold, and if you wait long enough, you'll figure out why the title is a thing. I do promise that next week will be a good one with some poetry and planning. Questions, comments, topics, disapproval of my shameful metaphors? Send them to me on Twitter! @Mackofafew

Hey everyone, it's Mack! Welcome back to Master of a Few; the podcast where the curious mind meets too much time. Have you ever visited a friend's church and had absolutely no clue what was going on? Hey everyone, it's Mack again! This is the first time that I haven't made my Friday upload schedule, but I'm blaming a computer update that deleted my editing software and made me find a new program. On this segment, we are going to talk about when silence is a good thing and not just the awkward result of being placed in a room with someone you have nothing in common with. I also decided to keep with my plan of adding my poetry to my segments since I liked how it turned out last time! Thanks for tuning back in! Welcome back to Master of a Few! I have great news for you. Growing pains are not something you grew out of when you turned 13! Well, you kind of did, but on this segment, I'm going to talk about growing pains that I and many other Christian college students experience. We're going to discuss the often unpleasant process of deconstructing and reconstructing our faith during our college years. It hurts, it is not very fun, it is very scary, but it is completely normal, and I think, completely necessary! Want to tell me a story? Have topic ideas, comments, questions, etc.? In this segment, I want to talk about love and what it really means to love someone unconditionally. I'm not focusing entirely on romantic love, but I do become a living love poem briefly so be prepared and you will be warned ahead of time. Also, this segment comes with a content warning for the use of the KJV Bible so if you are particularly sensitive to the use of old english please proceed with caution; I don't want anyone getting hurt.
