Jeff Samuel brings us our message this week looking at "How To Develop Patience" from James 5:7-12.

Jeff dives straight into a review of what Kotie spoke on last week to see how that ties into today's passage before looking at our passage for today in detail. He takes a look at how to hurt someone with grumbling, the opposite of what we should be doing. Jeff then looks at the story of the Prophet Micaiah from 1 Kings 22, and looks at how he invokes what James mentions in verse 10. He then circles back to verses 7 and 8 to discuss the "Lord's coming", specifically the "Rapture of the Church".

Kotie Smith discusses "How To Be Wise With Your Wealth" from James 5:1-6.

Kotie opens with a reading of our passage for today, before breaking it down, starting with discussing who this was written to. Kotie then moves verse by verse, looking at how they can be applied to us today, especially focusing on how we view money vs God. He breaks them into "three sins" outlined by James, before looking at some principals about wealth.

Dan Pettersen discusses facing our future this week, taken from James 4:13-17.

Peter Sun opens up our service today with a Pastoral Prayer over our children before Dan Pettersen jumps in to discuss "the future". Dan looks over three key mistakes that are commonly made about the future as outlined by James, and the warning that he gives.

Sam Crosbie brings us a shorter message this morning, focusing on just two verses from James 4.

While our passage is short, Sam jumps right in and reads the two verses that he's covering. He then talks to us with a warning about looking at things on the surface, rather than being able to see the deeper level and root cause of what may be going on. Sam then ties this into how James speaks into judging those around us, without actually dealing with the underlying problems that may be present. He then compares 2 chapters from 1 Corinthians which appears to contradict, but he looks at what the specifics are around what we should and shouldn't judge. Sam then continues to discuss the importance of making a distinction between evil and critical in sin. He then discusses three issues with trying to judge with our wisdom instead of God's word.

Peter Sun follows up the message from Tim Norris last week, looking at "Friendship with the World" from James 4.

Peter gets right into it and reads our passage for today before looking at how it builds on what was spoken about last week. He then breaks the passage into four sections - The Context; Our Actions; Consequences; and Solutions.

Tim Norris discusses "Earthly Wisdom" and "Heavenly Wisdom" and what that means from the end of James 3.

We jump into Tim giving us a quick overview of what has been covered in the last couple of chapters before he starts going through the passage for today. Tim looks at how we define wisdom based on people around us and their "status", and how the world defines wisdom from Romans 1, and even in Genesis 3. He then compares this to the "Christian" wisdom that James writes about here in our passage and also referred to in Proverbs 9, looking at how these different types of wisdom operate in our lives. Tim then breaks our passage into four key sections, focusing on "Godly Wisdom" and "Earthly Wisdom", and the fruits of them both.

Gavin Lynch looks at how to manage our mouth as James discusses in Chapter 3.

Andrew Linton starts us off with a pastoral prayer before handing over to Gavin who gives us a brief intro before asking Jonathan Linton to read the passage for today. Gavin then looks at the clarity that James hopes to give here, with the theme "Our words have the power to be a blessing or a curse – you choose!", and the main point being "The tongue can cause great destruction if not controlled". He then breaks the passage up into 4 main points, vs 1-2, vs 3-5, vs 6-8, and vs 9-12. Gavin looks at each of these sections with a takeaway for each section.

While we take a break from our current series, Lewis Varley challenges us to summarise what the Bible is all about in 12 words or less.

Lewis dives straight in with the question for this week, breaking for a couple of minutes to allow those present to discuss their answers. He then turns to Luke 24 to see how Jesus answers the question. After reading the passage, Lewis gives us some context of what we've just read before drawing six points from it. While looking at these points, Lewis also shares a bit about his time living and serving in Bangladesh.

Kanda Sami brings us a special Easter Sunday message this morning.

Kanda starts with a couple of anecdotes about preaching and the journey he's been on to speak this morning, before turning to Romans 5 and looking at the paradise that Adam lost being re-gained through Christ. He then looks at 1 Corinthians 15 and the Ressurection story presented here. Kanda then looks at five different ways that the devil has tried attacking God's plan, and how even through all this, Jesus achieved the cross. Kanda then looks at two of the "seven sayings ofresurrection Jesus" to wrap it all up with his own salvation story from the darkness of Hinduism and a challenge to accept the Gospel.

Peter Sun brings us into chapter 2 of James in our new series, looking at the pitfalls of partiality,

Peter takes us for a quick overview of our study, reminding us of the overall theme of James being "maturity in Christ". He then tells a story of a conservative church in America, and how it relates to our passage for today regarding partiality. Peter then looks at what partiality is (stereotyping) and how we should react to it as a Church. He then looks at three points as to why believers shouldn't be partial. Peter then wraps up with what we should do instead, according to Romans 12 and Philippians 2.

Andrew Linton wraps up James 1 in our new series this week.

Andrew begins with a brief overview of what we know about James, before getting James Broadbridge up to read our passage for this morning. After the reading, he follows up with a survey on how many people skipped lunch that morning, before swinging to look at the concept of "no Bible, no breakfast", which leads into our title for today's passage. Andrew then breaks the passage into four divisions, with four steps - one from each section - on how to be blessed by the Bible: Quietness, Meekness, Faithfulness, and Fruitfulness.

Dan Pettersen brings us verses 12-18 from James 1 this week in our new series.

Dan does a quick review of prior weeks before starting with a story of his time in Korea and the test for the English language school, which leads to the discussion of the homonym "peirasmos" which James uses in this part of the passage. He then looks at the homonym and the trials and temptations we may face, and what James has to say about this. Dan looks at five "principals" about dealing with temptation, also looking at four steps outlined that Satan can use to tempt us.

Kristopher Stout joins us from Word of Life (Executive Vice President of International and Youth Ministries) and shares about righteousness as discussed in Ephesians 6:14.

Kris takes us through why this topic has been on his heart before reading through the text on the Armour of God in Ephesians 6:10-17. He then looks at the importance of the Armour of God, and why we need to put it ALL on. Kris then dives into why righteousness is important, looking at references from both the Old Testament and the New Testament outlining this. He then discusses what "Positional Righteousness" is and means in a Christian life. Kris shares the importance of not only external righteousness but also internal righteousness. He then wraps up by sharing WHY we want to live righteously, and how we can put on the breastplate of righteousness.

Billy Hanna continues our study in James this week, while also taking a chance to chat about baptism.

Billy jumps right into it, reviewing the passage from last week for context before looking at verses 5-11. He then looks at his statement "In order to face our trials with a Godly perspective, we need God’s wisdom", looking at three points that this encompasses.

Billy then looks at what baptism is and why it's so significant in the Christian life, being done in obedience to Christ.

Sam Crosbie jumps right into the book of James in our new series, looking at the first four verses this week.

Sam looks at the passage right away, starting in verse 1 of James chapter 1, to introduce us to our audience. He then looks at the analogy of running for the sake of running, or for doing something for an "end goal" but no other purpose, before swinging around to his statement for this passage - “A desire for maturity should outlast any desire for a trial to pass.” Sam then looks at what a "trial" is, especially the one facing the audience of the book of James, and how we face them in the "Christian life". He then suggests three things that are "vital to our maturity being greater than our desire for a trial to pass".

Dan Pettersen kicks off our new series "Putting Our Faith Into Practice" with an overview of the book of James.

Dan starts by looking back at our series from last year and what we covered, which leads into the series we're going into looking at how we take what we learnt last year and make it practical. Dan then looks at who James was, and where he fits into the narrative. He then dives into an overview of the book, looking at the overarching theme of maturity, and breaking it down into five points. Dan looks at how a mature person is positive under pressure, sensitive to people, has mastered their mouth, is a peacemaker, and is patient and prayerful.

Gavin Lynch wraps up our book overview of Nehemiah, and our "Who Are We?" series as a whole this week, looking at Nehemiah 13.

Gavin gives us an overview of our study this year leading to the question "What do we need to do now?" Gavin then looks at an illustration of how we can tend to "play up when the Master isn't home". Titling his message "Avoiding the Pitfalls", Gavin presents his theme for today as "God's people should strive for obedience in all areas of life." As he progresses through the chapter, Gavin looks at five key points: As believers we should... "...not be compromised by the culture around us", "...guard our temple from the enemy", "...support the work and the workers of the church", "...put time aside to worship", and "...only date and marry other believers". Gavin wraps up by answering his question "What do we need to do now". "Let's be people who want to get rid of the sin that entangles us, live lives that glorify God, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus."

Bradley Joubert continues our study in Nehemiah, looking at chapters 8 to 12.

Bradley gives us a very brief introduction of himself before diving straight into our text for today after opening with prayer. After reading from the passage, Bradley looks at our first point, "Confession". With four points, he looks at how "the confessions of the Israelites were brought about by the Word of God", "this confession is accompanied by sincere feeling", "the confession is specific and detailed", and "the entire confession is punctuated with praise for Gods faithfulness". Bradley then moves on to his second point, "Covenant". Bradley looks at how "The covenant that they made was founded on the Word of God", and "taken together, confession and covenant are what we mean by the word repentance". Moving on to his third and final point, "Christ", Bradley poses the question "Where does this all lead us?"

Jeremy Lind continues our study in Nehemiah, looking at a detailed overview of chapters 4 to 7.

Jeremy gives us a quick bio for himself before diving into "story" to give us some context to look at our passage in, looking at what story we tell ourselves that motivates our daily behaviour, and how this "story" drove Nehemiah. He then looks at the contrast between "Effective Leadership" and "Revelatory Leadership" as hinted at in the passage today. Jeremy then takes us through our chapters today verse by verse looking at how Nehemiah reacted to the pushbacks he faced.

Dan starts us off by taking a look at the series "Who Are We?" that we've been going through as a church over the year, giving an overview of the topics and books we've been focusing on. He then takes us back to look at the first Church in Acts and how they developed. Dan then looks at the four things that we want to become characterised by as a church: "The Apostles Teaching - What does the Bible say?", "Fellowship", "Breaking of Bread", and "Prayer".

Caleb Wilkinson-Mackie shares a bit with us about his time in Nepal, while also sharing from Romans 10:9-15.

Caleb starts with a time of prayer as part of the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. He then shares a bit behind the work he recently did in Nepal and the heart behind why he did it, before diving into our passage for today. After reading through the text, Caleb breaks it into 3 segments while intertwining the learning with what he has been a part of this year. He looks at "The Belief" (vs 9-10), "The Hope" (vs 11-13), and "The Need" (vs 14-15). Caleb then wraps up looking at some facts outlining the mission field today, and a challenge with "The How" for how we can get involved.

Brian Goodwin is back to talk to us about our life from Acts 20:17-27.

Brian starts with a small promo for Lake Learning in January at Lake Taupo, before sharing an anecdote about his "baptismal" story. Brian then brings us around to Acts 20:17-27, where Paul is addressing the Elders at Ephesus, and he breaks down his words into 2 points/challenges - Believe, and Achieve. "Do You Believe?" Paul's one message in verse 21, and "What Will We Achieve" looking at verse 24.

Lewis Varley wraps up our study of Ephesians, looking at "Christ in our problems" in chapter 6 verses 10 to 24.

Lewis dives straight into reading our passage this morning before diving into some analogies that tie into our text for today, focusing on how we respond to problems in our lives as Christians. He then looks at how Paul describes how to deal with these troubles in the passage. Lewis asks the question, "What are we standing on?" He wraps up by looking back at the analogies from earlier and seeing how to apply what we've learnt with them, before looking at prayer.

Tom Leslie brings us into chapter 6 of Ephesians, looking at the second half of the instructions for submission started in chapter 5 verse 21.

Gavin Lynch starts us off with a prayer for Israel, and also our new leadership for our country before handing over to Tom. Tom launches straight into reading our passage for today, before outlining the relationships he will be looking at today - the parent-child relationship, and the slave-master relationship. He looks at his understanding of these relationships with a couple of examples, before looking at both sets of relationships. Starting with children and their parents, Tom looks at the importance of obeying and honouring your parents, with the latter remaining even after you have left home. He then also looks at the instruction given to the parents about not provoking their children to anger. Tom then recaps verses 5-9 before looking at the relationship of a slave and master.

We round out Ephesians 5 with Jeff Samuel, looking at Christ and our Church as an example of Marriage.

Jeff dives straight into reading our passage today, before taking a step back and looking at what marriage on this earth actually means. He then takes us through our passage verse by verse, breaking down an understanding of them one at a time, looking at comparison vs contrast.

Brian Goodwin brings us the message this week, looking at the start of Ephesians 5, discussing Love, Light, and Wisdom.

Brian shares a story from a prison in Peru where a man tried to take his life but was challenged by a nurse, before leading into reading our passage in Ephesians from today. He then focuses on 2 verses - verse 2 "Live a life filled with Love...", and verse 8 "...Live as people of light". Brian also discusses the topic of "sexual immorality", especially as a Christian (verse 3), leading into "no smutty talk" (verse 4), and "no excusing sin" (verse 6). He then closes our time with an open invitation to reaffirm our desire to live for God every day in love and enlightenment.

As we take a break from Ephesians, Dan looks at Romans 12 in regard to "Setting Christ Apart".

Dan looks at Romans 12 and the discussion of being the body of Christ and functioning as such, serving, as a living sacrifice. He then interviews Rachel Randall (Sunday School Coordinator), Phyllis Egestad (Ladies Friendship & Craft), and Lynda Linton (Kenehi Kids) about each of the ministries they're involved with at HBC.

This week Peter Sun looks at the second half of Ephesians 4, focusing on the mind.

Peter starts by reading through our passage for today. Peter then dives straight in to discuss how the mind works, looking at the difference between the transformed mind and the darkened mind, by looking at what the mind is, and how it's connected with the brain. He then looks at the practical steps we can take as believers to renew our minds.

We dive into Spiritual Gifts with Gavin Lynch this week, looking at Ephesians 4.

Gavin dives right in, looking at his theme of "Jesus gives spiritual gifts to grow and build up His Church", breaking this into two parts: Spiritual gifts given (v7-10), and Spiritual gifts used (v11-16). Starting in verse 7, Gavin starts a journey into looking at what these spiritual gifts are, and the significance of them. He then looks at why we should use our gifts to grow and build up the Church.

This week we look at the start of Ephesians chapter 4 with Bardoe Besselaar.

Bardoe dives head first in this morning, looking at how the world around us defines "unity", followed by an overview of our journey through Ephesians so far before diving into a reading of our passage for today. Bardoe then breaks our passage down today into 2 sections: vs 1-3 examines the inclusive nature of unity, and vs 4-6 examines the exclusive nature of unity.

We are privileged to have Geoff Smith back for a second week in a row to go through our next chapter of Ephesians.

Geoff starts by reading through Ephesians chapter 3 this morning before looking at an overview of the sections of Ephesians. He then looks at the origin of sin, and why we need this unification in the first place. Geoff then comes to the passage for today and looks at how God has "Equalised" us. He then looks at some examples of what the Mystery is NOT. The Mystery is NOT that the Gentiles will be saved; The Mystery is NOT that the Gentiles would overtake Israel. Geoff then looks at what the Mystery is, according to this passage. He then challenges us on if "Jesus is at home in every room of our heart".

Geoff Smith continues our time in Ephesians this week, looking at the second half of chapter 2.

After reading through our passage this week, Geoff looks at the chapter broken into three segments - Alienation (v11-12); Reconciliation (v13-18); and Unification (v19-22). Geoff looks back at Genesis and the covenant with Abraham, alongside the genealogy of Christ, and the responsibility that the Israel nation possessed. He then compares the nation of Israel to the Gentiles before Christ came. Geoff then looks at how Christ reconciled the Jews and the Gentiles, in that Christ broke down the wall of hostility between the two. He then wraps up the chapter by looking at the unification through Christ. Geoff then poses the question "How important is the Church to you?", and discusses how we should show "love" to each other.

Dan looks at how we use prayer to communicate back to God in response to scripture and dives into some highlights that have helped him in prayer, looking at the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6.

After a short overview of our series so far, Dan looks at a few statements some people say regarding being part of a church. He then looks at three points - "What is a church?", "What does a church do?", and "How does that work in practice?", prefaced by the question "Why do we care?" Dan looks at 3 key things of the Church which are "Evangalise", "Baptise", and "Stabalise". He then looks at the three stages of our Christian walk. Dan then reflects on the statements from the start of his message and how we could view them.

As we take a break from our current series, Dan brings us a message on tithing titled "What's In Your Hand?"

Dan poses the statement "We all have a desire for our lives to count for something", and asks "What kind of impact are you having?" He starts by looking at this in the context of Moses and how God used what was in his hand. Dan then looks at "What is tithing?", "What does tithing look like?", and "Why would you tithe?", based on what the Bible says. He looks at examples from Abraham, Jacob, and Moses with Israel. He then looks at what tithing looked like in the New Testament. Dan closes with a summary of all he covered, looking at four points on how God wants us to give.

Andrew Linton brings our final passage from 1 Peter 5 for our "Who Are We" series this week.

Andrew Sun starts us off with a reading of the passage for this week before Andrew Linton jumps into breaking it down. Andrew breaks our chapter into two sections - Firstly, "Shepherding the Flock", and secondly, "Standing Firm". But before he dives into these sections, he gives us some footnotes about the end of the chapter. Diving into verse 1, Andrew looks at some definitions around "Elders", before continuing on to look at the pre-requisites of eldership. He then circles back and looks at what the work is of a shepherd elder. Andrew wraps up with a summary of what Peter covers in this final chapter, and the letter as a whole.

This week we have Billy Hanna bringing our passage for our "Who Are We" series, looking at 1 Peter 4.

Billy starts the message with an overview of the book we've been looking at and how it ties into our current series, before diving straight in at verse 7. Moving on to verses 8-11, Billy highlights a number of traits that Peter gives that "must characterise the Church", starting with "loving one another" and going verse by verse from there observing what that looks like when the Church loves one another earnestly. From verse 13 onward, Billy looks at how we suffer for the glory of God, and how we need to rejoice in that. He closes with verse 19 with the summarising statement from Peter.

Gavin Lynch continues our "Who Are We" series, looking at 1 Peter 3 and 4.

Gavin breaks our passage this week up into two triumphs - Triumphant suffering of Christ (1 Peter 3:18-22), and Triumphant living in Christ (1 Peter 4:1-6). We start as Gavin is explaining the triumphant suffering of Christ, as he jumps into verse 18 and begins to break it down. Gavin then continues through verse 18 in to 20, and looks at the fallen angels and the story of Noah and his family. He then wraps up chapter 3 with some applications before heading into the second division in the start of chapter 4. Gavin looks at what suffering for Christ looks like today, looking at the sins from verse 3, and how we can be different. This week for our "Who Are We" series, Mikey Cooper looks at "Suffering & Blessing" from 1 Peter 3.

After opening our time with prayer, Mikey dives straight into verse 8 before pausing to reflect on and break down the verse. To give some context, Mikey gives a bit of church history on how the early church looked, giving meaning to the term "brotherly love". Moving in to verse 9, Mikey looks at what Christ modelled and taught in relation to repaying evil with blessing. Continuing on with verses 10-12, Mikey looks at the passage Peter is quoting from the Psalms and the call he is re-iterating to turn from evil, and to not speak deceit. He then reflects on these first 4 verses and the qualities they describe that we as a Christian community should have. Looking on the "blessing" mentioned in these verses, Mikey moves on to verses 13-14 and discusses what this looks like alongside suffering. Mikey then wraps up our passage, looking at verses 15-17, he looks at how we are to "work hard as though we're working for the Lord, not for man." He ends with a framework we can apply from this passage, to show and live the hope of a Christian life to those around us.

This week we have Steve Fleming - pastor of Grace Bible Church in Naples, Florida (www.gbcn.org) - sharing from Colossians 3 on "How to Evaluate the Health of a Ministry / Believer".

We start with an introduction on Steve from Brian White, before Steve dives into an overview of the start of the book of Colossians as they have been looking into it at his home church over the past year. He then gets to our passage for today and looks at six principles, starting in verse 12 with the five "attitudes" listed there. Steve then moves on to looking at the "glue" which holds together the Church in verse 13. He then looks at "what should drive / motivate all our relationships" in verse 14, before looking at "what rules relationships" in verse 15. Steve starts to wrap up with his final points, "what permeates relationships" from verse 16, and "who gets the credit" from verse 17.

Peter jumps right in giving an overview of the passage and what we'll look at this week, while also reflecting on the message Dan shared a couple of weeks ago and how they tie in to each other. While the passage for today specifically deals with servants and their relationships with their masters, Peter looks at how we can apply what we read here to the workforce in New Zealand with the relationship between a boss and their employee, and he asks the question "How can we show Christlikeness in such relationships?" Peter answers this by looking at characteristics of Christlike followers in the workplace.

This week Dan Pettersen is speaking on "Submission To Government" from 1 Peter chapter 2, continuing our time in 1st Peter.

Dan reflects on where we left off a couple of weeks ago with Peter Sun covering the Cornerstone earlier in the chapter, before diving right into our passage for this week. He looks at the first verse for today, explaining a "sojourner" and what that means in this. Dan then moves on to the second half of this verse to look at the battle between "our flesh", "our spirit", and "our mind". He then looks at the follow verse, verse 12, to see why this is so important in showing our Christian conduct. Dan then gets to the crux of his discussion for today in verse 13, "submitting ourselves to every human authority". Dan gives a few "hypothetical" scenarios to challenge what this could actually look like, before discussing what it may have been like for the Christians at this time and the situations they may have faced. He then looks at why Peter says we should submit to human authority. Dan then discusses the limits to this instruction, before wrapping up with the importance of being an example as Christians.

Peter starts our book off with a bit of context around what the book is about as a whole, this letter Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, and why we as a church are going through it. Peter then starts reading through the passage, starting with the first 2 verses, and he looks at the significance of how Paul starts this letter. Peter then dives into the next nine verses, breaking them down one by one. Peter jumps over to Acts 16:6-23 and has it read out before discussing how the gospel plays a part in this letter. Peter wraps up with a practical application for what we've gone over today.

This month we are blessed to have Caleb Wilkinson Mackie speaking during our monthly Sunday evening service, this month discussing "Worship".

Starting in Amos 5 from verse 21, Caleb discusses how we can't just be blasé about our worship. Caleb then looks at John 4 from verse 19, where Jesus discusses worship with the Samaritan woman. He looks at how this conversation paves the way for how we can worship from wherever, whenever, and what this actually means for us today. Caleb continues, discussing the "Biblical view of Worship" and looks at the three primary words that translate into our word "Worship". Caleb poses the question, "so how do we worship?" before looking at a couple of examples from David in Psalm 63 and Paul in Romans 12. Caleb wraps up with six "practical tips for worship" before closing with a section from Revelation 5.

This week is our final week in 2nd Samuel, and Alan Stanley takes us through 2nd Samuel 24.

Our passage is read in its entirety by Mat before Alan dives into it. Alan starts by discussing how "religious people" tend to limit God to their beliefs, rather than experiencing Him, and poses the question "have you ever encountered/experienced God, or is He simply someone that you believe in?" Alan looks at the census taken by David in verses 1-8 and discusses why God would incite David to take this census that he then needs to be punished for. Alan then looks at the way that God can still use people, no matter what their life has been like, as David repents in verse 17. God forgives.

As we near the end of our study in 2nd Samuel, Gavin Lynch takes us through the first 7 verses of 2nd Samuel 23.

Gavin starts by reading our passage for today, before discussing the probability of these verses actually being the "last words of David". Gavin then breaks the verses down, firstly looking at "the Grace of God" in verse 1, then he looks at "the Righteous King and the Faithful God" in verses 2-5, and finally, he looks at "the Judgement of God" in verses 6-7.

With a slightly different layout this week, Peter Cowie takes us through 2nd Samuel 22.

Prior to the message, the congregation sang "When Peace Like a River", and Peter starts by discussing the significance of that song and why he asked for it to be sung before he started. As we start to look at chapter 22 of 2nd Samuel, Peter looks at the similarities between it and Psalm 18. Peter then breaks chapter 22 into sections, asking different people to come up and read these sections before breaking them each down a bit deeper.

Back into 2nd Samuel this week, Peter Cowie looks at chapters 20-21 with us.

Peter dives in deep from the start with the question, "How do we be men and women after God's own heart when things get comfortable?" Peter looks back at the story so far, showing the context of the journey David has been on, starting in Chapter 11 through to our chapters for today. As Peter comes into chapter 20, he looks at how David contrasts with those in this chapter. David is passive while everyone is trying to be active, and every time that David is passive, it ends up in disaster. But chapter 21 turns this around. Peter looks at what happened when David became active again, and he lived out his duty and faith, doing what God asked him to do. Peter wraps up by talking about how we need to be active in our faith and live out what it means to be men and women after God's own heart when times are good.

Following on from last months message on "The Call to Serve", this month Gavin takes us through one of the three passages from our Young Adults study groups in Acts 20 - "Paul's Life, Work, and Mission" - during our monthly Sunday evening service.

Mark Linton opens for Gavin by reading our passage in Acts 20 before Gavin dives in and gives us a bit of context into the passage we're looking at. Gavin then takes a look at how Pauls service to others has stemmed from his desire to serve the Lord, and he does this by putting Jesus first. So Gavin challenges us with a question, "are we putting Jesus first so that we can serve others by sharing the gospel, being an encouragement, and strengthening others through our words and actions?" Gavin then looks at how Paul practically lived out this challenge, breaking it down into 5 ways that Paul did this.

This week we take a break from 2nd Samuel to hear from Dan Pettersen, a church planter now working with WEC NZ/East West College, discussing our call from God, looking at the story of Jonah.

Dan starts by posing the question "Did you ever get the sense that God was asking you to step out and do something?" He then jumps into the story of Jonah, starting in chapter 1. After giving some background of the area that Jonah was to go into, Dan looks deeper into the struggle that Jonah faced with the command he had been given by God. As Dan continues to journey through the book of Jonah and discuss what the outcome of Jonah's trip brought, he looks at the practical applications we can take from this story when we look at the journey that we are being called on by God, covered in 3 different steps. Dan wraps up his message with Romans 8:29, discussing God's "predetermined plan to make you more like Christ".

Billy Hanna dives into 2nd Samuel 19 this week, looking at David's response to the death of Absalom.

Billy breaks our passage today into three pieces - the context of David's grief, the enormity of David's responsibility, and considers the failure of David's perspective. The key idea Billy wants to bring across from this passage is "a heart that looks only to its own interests, shows no regard for God's lasting glory". Billy looks at where today's message fits in the story throughout the books of Samuel before looking at the points outlined. He looks at why Saul, David, and Absalom were or were not fit to be kings, as is shown in this portion of the books. Billy looks at how Joabs response to Davids reaction shows this. But how can we apply this passage to ourselves? Billy looks at a couple of different points on what he learnt while studying this passage.

How does a man born into royalty become so bitter? What brought Absalom to turn the people from their king to the point of war? In light of this, Mikey looks back at the context of Uzzahs actions, based on the instructions given in Numbers 4 to the Kohathites. Mikey then looks at the lessons that we can learn from this passage. He then goes on to take a step back from our passage and look at Samuel and the Bible as a whole with the question for today in mind, "How do you view God?" based on Exodus 34.

Peter challenges us with the concept of a "story" as we enter 2nd Samuel. What are the differences we see between Saul and David? Both Kings of Israel throughout the books of Samuel, but very different in how they lead and who they were to the people and God. Peter dives into 3 different aspects of this passage to help us know what God is trying to teach us - the contrast; the problem; and speech. In today's passage, David learns of Saul's death, and we see how he reacts to the news.

Peter starts of with an overview of where the city of Thyatira is today, what it is known for, and what it was back in the time of the New Testament, specifically in regards to trade guilds, to give some background to our passage from today. Peter then reads through Revelation 2:18-29 before breaking it down. He looks at the start of this reading at how the church seems like an amazing church, but as he continues on to verse 20, the tone sets in to show that it isn't all as it seems. Peter then looks at how the church ended up the way that they did, breaking down the rest of the passage verse by verse. Peter closes by challenging us to examine why we do the works that we do.

This is week 3 of our series on "The Seven Churches" in Revelation, and Mikey Cooper looks at the letter to the Church at Pergamum in Revelation 2:12-17.

Starting with an overview of what the city of Pergamum was like, Mikey leads into our passage for today. Mikey builds a framework to help us understand the text and the application we can pull from it by looking back to the story of Balaam in Numbers, followed by the letter to the church at Corinth in 1st Corinthians chapters 8-10, which he uses to give us an overview of the theme that Paul writes across those three chapters that relate to today's passage in regards to eating food sacrificed to idols in verse 14. This all leads to his key question, what is the application for our age? - "What are the things in our culture that undermine our spiritual and moral heart, that we as followers of Jesus still engage in, that we have gotten so used to, that we do not even think about?" Mikey then gives us an example of this, by challenging us to look at this question specifically in relation to the entertainment industry. Mikey then wraps up with a look at the significance of the references in verse 17 before finishing with a couple of challenges.

As we enter week 2 of our series on "The Seven Churches" in Revelation, Alan Stanley takes a look at the letter to the Church at Smyrna in Revelation 2:8-11.

Alan starts with a very brief overview of the purpose of the book of Revelation, before diving into our text for today. He takes a look back into Isaiah and challenges us to view how we can often try to take the place of God (play god) in our own lives. To put things into perspective, Alan looks at what it would have been like to live under the Roman Empire as the church of Smyrna at the time. Alan then looks at the church at Smyrna and the suffering they were warned of, and how this is relevant to the church today.

As we enter week 1 of our new series on "The Seven Churches" in Revelation, Gary starts us off with his last sermon as our pastor at Hukanui Bible Church, looking at the letter to the Church in Ephesus in Revelation 2:1-5.

This week we were blessed to have 2 baptisms during our service, which Gary was able to tie the theme of this letter to quite nicely. Gary starts out by looking at the state of the Church in Ephesus as it stands when this letter is written and looks at how this is the second letter written to this church in the Bible. Referencing the book of Ephesians, Gary looks at the changes seen in the church between the two letters. Gary looks at what hardships the church at Ephesus had to face with the sin-filled city that they lived in. As he continues into the passage, he looks at the lost love of the church and how it affects them and is still relevant in places today. As he wraps up, Gary looks back on three things personally related to his walk - his salvation; his baptism; when he wept last. Gary wraps up his message with a challenge to the church - "Why do we do the things we do?"

This week, Sam Crosbie looks at "Food Laws and the Observance of Sacred Days" from Romans 14.

Sam starts by discussing not what Paul says in this passage, but what he doesn't say. This leads to Sam's first point - "We are called to have convictions". He looks at how at no point in this letter is Pauls aim to correct the readers. Instead, it is to place personal responsibility on each reader and hearer of the letter that their opinion is right. Sam then looks at how this thought applies to us today in the 21st century, especially in matters of moral neutrality, e.g. drinking alcohol, personal spending vs tithing, or absorbing media with witchcraft present. Sam then looks into the divisions that building our own convictions from the Bible can create, leading to his second point - "Our convictions are to be our own". In this, He looks at how Christians generally agree on the fundamentals of the Christian faith and the Bible, however, no two faiths are identical, because, "Our God is too big". Sam looks at how we can apply these lessons in our life, especially in "honouring Christ, by acting on our convictions in the smallest of matters", thinking of how we often let small compromises enter our lives because we don't see them as being a big deal. He wraps it up with a final point - "We are called to walk in love". Sam looks at how we can make our convictions work together. He challenges us to be a church that is characterised by denying ourselves of things, rather than living in our Christian liberty at the expense of our fellow believers. Sam closes with three questions - "In what things are you the strong brother, and are you willing to give them up for your weaker brother?"; "In what way are you the weaker brother?"; "Are you convinced in the way that you should act, do your prayerfully seek out God's guidance in how you live your life, or do you do anything less than that?"

This week, Billy Hanna looks at the Rich Young Ruler from Mark 10.

Through this passage, Billy looks at 3 key points - The righteous discernment of Christ (v17-21); The tragic delusion of the young ruler (v22); The contrasting response of Zaccheus (Luke 19); He discusses the difficulty of evangelism and how Christ was able to discern this man and share what is relevant to him. However, even through all of this, Billy looks at how the young ruler was so quick to make the sad decision not to pursue Christ fully. Billy challenges us to view this passage and look at how we're trying to fill the voids in our life. As Billy closes, he discusses the similarities and contrasts of the story of Zaccheus from Luke 19 and challenges us to consider which of these two we look more like.

Over the Summer break, our services are a shorter devotion time, and in this first week, Ernie Pene looks at the story of Onesimus from the book of Philemon.

After reflecting over the testimonies we've heard at the evening services in 2020, Ernie goes over the story of Onesimus and his journey. He reads the letter that Paul wrote to Philemon, the master of Onesimus, and breaks it down into four areas for discussion as he covers the three people that are in this letter. Ernie looks at how Philemon may have reacted to the letter once he received it with Onesimus in front of him.

This last week of our end of year series, Gary Gilpin looks into the story of the birth of Jesus the Messiah, from Matthew 1 verses 18 to 25.

Gary covers three different aspects of the birth - the scandal of it all; the spirit involved in the scandal; and the surrogate/substitute. He talks about each of these three aspects in the context of the time, and how it was so much more than what the prophecies talked about. Gary discusses how this would seem if it happened today. He challenges us to remember our Saviour this Christmas, and not to get wrapped up in the gift-giving traditions that surround us.

We are so often standing with one foot in each camp, not ready to give it all to God. Are you putting your faith into practice? Brett looks back to the early Church, and how they died for their belief, and how during the Reformation, the same thing happened. They died for their faith. Would you be prepared to do this? How much do you actually believe in your faith?

This gives him a segway to question doubt, if we've ever doubted the Bible, and why.

This week, Alan Stanley closes 1st Samuel for us looking at the story of Saul's death.

As Hukanui Bible Church wraps up 1st Samuel, Alan discusses death and how we approach it. Saul loses three of his sons in the war with the Philistines, and Saul himself is wounded severely. Saul ends his life, causing the Israelites to flee, and bringing 1st Samuel to a close. Alan talks about how the Israelites responded to the death of their king, who they relied on. He discusses how this relates to us, and our "weekly Gospel" we may rely on to get us through.

This week, Tom McIvor looks at the story of Saul consulting with a medium. Samuel has died and the Lord refuses to respond to Saul's pleas, so in his fear, Saul seeks out a Medium to consult with Samuel from the grave.

As Hukanui Bible Church continues our journey through 1st Samuel, Tom talks about fear in the Bible, and how fear can affect us. Tom discusses how when we are controlled by fear, we are trying to turn to our own internal strength, rather than the strength of God. He looks into how this affected Saul when he was faced with the army of the Philistines, and distraught and gripped with fear, he turns to something evil that he has banned from the nation instead of repenting to the Lord and asking for His help. Tom concludes with how we can overcome the fears we face as we turn to God.

Peter breaks down Daniel chapter 9 and discusses how this is the backbone of Biblical prophecy and how Daniel misunderstood Jeremiah's prophecy of the 70 years of desolation. Peter then goes into depth explaining the 70-week prophecy and the maths behind it as he understands it in the lead to the Messianic Kingdom.
