TechSociety FM is a regular discussion for business owners, entrepreneurs and technology enthusiasts, with a focus on strategic and commercial topics. Alex & John are technical business owners who run a successful entrepreneurial software engineering business. Tech Society aims to educate, inform, and encourage discussion on topics like: networking (the human kind!), building and managing a development team, finding your co-founder, technology startups, and getting funding.
In this episode of Tech Society, hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software speak with Natasha Blycha, global head of digital law at law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. She and her team are beginning to unravel the legal answers that technology is beginning to ask. Starting as a competition lawyer, she returned from a decade-long, family-focused sabbatical into a completely changed world that presented her new legal challenges.
During their conversation, Natasha ponders on the implications of the emerging digital landscape - talking about how the legal framework treats digital structures: NFTs, smart contracts, DAOs, tokens, cryptocurrencies, metaverses, etc… or how it doesn’t treat them. What will the law have to do to keep up with technology that is constantly evolving? In trading crypto, are you breaking the law? Who is ultimately responsible? In this episode of Tech Society, hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software have the chance to speak with Sheryl Frame, one of Perth’s most well-known and experienced commercialisation specialists. From humble beginnings in the medi-tech sector, Sheryl definitely walks the talk. She has established and successfully sold several businesses, held management positions in publicly listed companies, and has helped many entrepreneurs prepare for market. For ten years, she was a Commercialisation Adviser for the Australian Government’s Accelerating Commercialisation program, which provided public funding for companies with innovative solutions. She has also been involved in organisations that help women in business; AWISE, Australian Women in IT, Science and Engineering, WiTWA, SBE Australia, and others.
In this episode, Sheryl gives her thoughts on the growth of entrepreneurship in Western Australia, the unique challenges faced by women entering this space, team dynamics, sole founders, and recollections on how some of Perth’s local businesses have prepared themselves to market their products on the open market. She also talks about the role governments can play to support innovation and entrepreneurship.

Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population consisting of 350 ethnic groups spread across seventeen thousand islands!
The historic open trade agreement, known as Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) recently ensures a very profitable future for both nations.
Phil Turtle, National President of Australia Indonesia Business Council (AIBC), was part of this working group for over a decade. He shared with Alex Dunmow and John Nguyen from Ninja Software the unlimited opportunities for Australians, especially in the tech space.
With over 180 million mobile phone users of which two-third are actively on social media, tech-savvy Indonesians have secured Indonesia as the enviable startup ecosystem with the most unicorns in the South East Asian region. To date, five unicorns and a decacorn!

How do Australian Tech companies stand out in Asia? Which Asia? India-Asia? Japan-Asia? China-Asia? Singapore-Asia? Be more specific.
Andrew Wei Min Lee, an experienced negotiator with over half of his life spent in Asia, provides powerful considerations in engagement with Asian clients. Having led successful commercial negotiations and dispute resolutions while living in China, Australian born Andrew has often seen the lost-in-translation deal-breaking scenarios between East and West. He highlights to Alex and John from Ninja Software a common oversight, the lack of awareness of the cultural stereotypes and invisible baggage each person brings to the table.
Also explored is the booming e-commerce phenomena in Asia. Tech integration is faster in Asian countries which interestingly has a direct correlation to better, cheaper internet access and their cultural position on privacy.
With regards to tech opportunities, Andrew advised, “We can do more to understand what technology platforms are being used overseas. That knowledge can unlock a lot of business potential”.
