About James

I’m an award-winning logo designer, seasoned freelancer, design educator, dad and owner of Barnard.co. I specialise in designing brand identities and logos with meaning.

I got my start in graphic design more than a decade ago, working in the publishing industry. I have designed creative content for some of the UK’s biggest titles, including The Daily Telegraph, Grazia, Men’s Health, Empire, Cosmopolitan, The Times and many more.

These days I run my freelance logo design business from the Gold Coast, Australia, after emigrating from London in 2021. I have a ridiculous variety of skills in design software, which I aim to pass on to the next generation of designers through my social platforms.

My work has been published in the Logo Lounge and I speak as an authority in the world of logo design at design conferences, on podcasts and for other design channels.

In this week's episode we speak to the founder of Logo Package Express, Michael Bruny-Groth. Michael is a graphic designer himself and we chat about his background and how he got to the point where making a product, an illustrator plugin to speed up the process of preparing a logo package to solve an existing problem, became his business and how helping other designers become better service providers was so critical.

Please Note: Since interviewing Michael, the show has now signed as an affiliate to help cover the cost of the podcast. The show was recorded in June.

Logo Package Express can pump out 200+ logo files in under 5 minutes. We suggest you spend all that extra time bagging new clients and designing more logos. You know best what your clients need, so we want you to make your logo packages your way. Fine tune your logo packages with customizable file and folder naming, multi-scale export, and logo padding options.

Way back in Feb 2018 He Shoots, He Draws was born. It started as a weekly podcast and in those 159 weeks, it’s published 150 episodes so the plan is kind of working. The show has been graced with some amazing guests, over 100 5 star reviews left on iTunes and a very loyal following listener base, a couple of thousand downloads away from 250,000 downloads from over 100 countries. To say they are both chuffed to bits is an understatement. So thank you to everyone who has listened and shared, it’s very much appreciated in a very saturated podcast market. Utilising the current software and hardware to give you more scope to be a better designer and get more business is what John has done over the past few years since getting an iPad and going mobile as a workflow. I love his work and aesthetic - and he's such a fun interviewee! Enjoy!

Brian is also a COVID recoverer and he tells the story of how that came to be and his and his wife's recovery. Brian was a dream guest, his stories were so interesting. If you love photography you'll love listening to Brian's enthusiasm for his craft. Join myself and Alan for 90 mins of pure photography joy!

About Brian...
What was once a hobby and then a dream, became a reality in 2005 when I started my career as a professional photographer. I didn't know where it would take me, but I knew it would be the adventure of a lifetime. Photographing people and events has opened up my world beyond my wildest dreams. Making art from what I see has become a true calling, and one I strive to do better and better, shoot by shoot. Access is a privelege I take very seriously. Whether I am backstage at an event, in close proximity to a subject, or in the audience, my goal is to capture the true essence of what's happening before me. I love it, and I'll never stop doing it.

Photographer Brian Friedman started out as a road manager for the legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes. But it was during Haynes’ 20-city tour, that Brian began photographing Roy and discovered his passion for image making that put him on a road to a new career. Since then, he has sharpened his skills and his eye to become recognized as a photographer of choice by noted entertainment personalities, corporate leaders, event planners and discerning individuals. His clients include iHeartRadio, Clearchannel Communications, NBC, CBS, 20th Century Fox, and comedians Brian Regan and Bill Burr, to name a few. Brian’s images have appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, People, Playboy, The Economist, and Pollstar to name a few. In 2007-2008 Brian had the distinct honor of photographing Barack and Michelle Obama for the Obama for America campaign. Recently Brian was given a 5 page live concert photography spread in M Music & Musician’s magazine – a first for that publication. To all of these assignments, Brian brings the same level of imagination and creativity that has distinguished his vision and his work for more than a decade.

It's a Glyn and Dave episode this week. We talk about awards and Glyn's first judging experience for the British Army Photographers. We discuss the merits of switching equipment such as Apple v Windows based on fit for purpose, not brand snobbery, and then we chat about a recent video project we both worked on for ex-SAS and star of SAS: Last Man Standing, Billy Billingham. It's a mixed bag and a repeat of an old fake ad we did about winning awards at the very end :)

We reached our 100th episode! We started back in Feb 2018 with the intention to just make episodes as we go. We were surprised by the reception we got and the stats that followed. 165,000 downloads across 145 countries in that time and over 100 five star reviews on iTunes has blown us away. THANK YOU! In this episode we have a chat about our experiences over the 100 episodes, personal and professional. We'll be back for more in 2020!

We'd like to thank the following people and companies for their influence and support over those 100 episodes. Firstly, all of our wonderful guests, we appreciate you've given up your time for us. Next are our friends at KelbyOne, Glyn and I would maybe have never crossed paths without our relationship with Scott and the KelbyOne family, past and present. Then there's our amazing show partners over this time. Paul Genge, Westcott Lighting, The Photography Show, Colour Confidence + X-Rite, Phlearn and Rocky Nook. Thank you all and we look forward to welcoming some back in 2020. Thanks to Simplecast for being our hosts, we chose them on recommendation and they've made the process easy to publish each week. Thank you to all our listeners and subscribers Worldwide, without you taking the time to listen to us chatter on each week, we'd still be us but there'd be less people hearing our rants and guests. Than you for all the feedback, reviews, questions and shares on social media.

We are carrying on into 2020, same quality and at least 3 episodes a month. Please tell your friends about the show!!

If you’re a regular listener of the podcast you may remember that Glyn recorded an interview with Ian Munro waaaay back…in fact it was back in episode 15

Not surprisingly that particular episode ranks as one the most listened to episodes we’ve shared and that’s because well, everyone loves Ian. Yep talented and a damn good story teller, but it’s Ian’s honesty that resonated with so many people.

Lots was going on with Ian when we recorded episode 15…he’d just come back from having been flown out to Florida as special guest of KelbyOne  to exhibit his images in the KelbyOne Gallery which aired live on the internet with him also being interviewed infront of a large audience.

Ian talks about this and how things didn’t pan out as he thought following all this publicity HOWEVER what he talks about shows that everything happens for a reason because A LOT has changed for Ian in the past year or but 100% for the better because now, and you’ll totally hear this in his voice, he’s way happier with what he’s doing especially after having had his work spotted, exhibited at an Art Gallery in London, sold some of fine art which is exactly what his work is.

Ian knows who he is and what makes him happy but it took time to get to this point.

Anyway take a listen and if you don’t yet know Ian I guarantee you’ll love him just as we all do when you hear what he has to say.

Check out Ian’s work over at: https://ianmunrophotography.co.uk/

Glyn is back! This week's episode is about the almost rebrand of Watford Football Club by St Albans based designer, Marcus Dilley, and Portland US based sports logo specialist, Brian Gundell. This summer, Talenthouse advertised a logo rebrand (paid) contest for designers to redesign the iconic Watford FC badge/crest that had been in place for 40 years. Watford are 'The Hornets' and in the past their badge has been depicted as such. In recent years, also affectionately know as 'The Graham Taylor Era' the Watford badge has depicted a Moose looking Hart. Was it time to change, go back to the hornets? That's what this contest was about and there were some great designs submitted. The 'finalist' was a joint effort by Marcus Dilley and Brian Gundell. We talk about their process and story to the point where they just lost out with 40% of the vote against 60% for the current badge. This is what happened...

About Steve Brazill

My name is Steve Brazill, also known as Razz on the air at KCAL FM and to friends. I am also a Southern California based Live Music Photographer, the former House Photographer for concerts at San Manuel Casino, and the host of the Behind the Shot Podcast. As a radio personality, emcee, and voice actor, I have been around the music and entertainment industry for many years. Combining my love of both music & photography, I capture those defining moments that happen during a live performance – on-stage or behind-the-scenes.

My images have been seen in newsprint; the Duesenberg USA Guitar catalog (Joe Walsh); in TV productions, such as MAVTV’s “Les Paul Kids Rock Free Concert Series” at the Fender Center; and recognized online in features such as in Mashable’s “16 Concert Photos That Will Bring Music To Your Ears”.

In 2014, I helped start the “On Stage” show for a local government TV channel, where I’m the host and interview people from the local music scene. That show was relaunched in 2017 as “In Studio“.

My podcast “Behind the Shot” launched in 2016 on the TWiP Network, and in 2018 I relaunched the show on my own. On each episode of Behind the Shot (behindtheshot.tv) I try to get inside the mind of a great photographer by taking a closer look at one of their shots.

I also do a presentation on Live Music Photography, having been a speaker at the PPC Expo (Professional Photographers of California), and various PPC affiliates throughout the state.

About Dickie

Originally planned for publication on 12 August, Richard 'Dickie' Pelham's A Life behind the Lens: Thirty Years of Award Winning Photography of Sports Most Iconic Moments was delayed by one week so as to enable the inclusion of images of England’s first-ever Cricket World Cup win in July.

The collection includes the very best work of Pelham, the multi award-winning chief sports photographer of The Sun for the past 30 years. He has covered six Olympic Games, seven World Cups, any number of Test matches and many championship boxing bouts, capturing the moments of triumph and despair, the great goals, the knockout punches, the key wickets and the gold-medal glory.

He has been trackside, ringside, pitchside and poolside as well as in the studio and on the training grounds with the biggest names in world sport, including Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Andy Murray, Paul Gascoigne, David Beckham, Tom Daley, Lennox Lewis and Anthony Joshua.

His pictures have featured on memorable front and back pages and centre spreads. The images are accompanied by Dickie's own recounting of the human stories behind the pictures and the technical secrets of a master of his trade.

Richard Pelham is the multi-award-winning chief sports photographer of The Sun. A Life Behind The Lens is his own story and his own selection of his best photographs.

  • His main passions are boxing and football, and his images capture the brutality and the ballet of both
  • He shares the tales behind the pictures: of hiding in training ground bushes to photograph Paul Gascoigne...
  • Of falling into the same Barry Burn as 1999 Open golf leader Jean van der Velde’s ball at Carnoustie...
  • Of keeping a secret that mayhave ended Frank Bruno’s World Heavyweight title chances
  • He recounts his own race against deadline at the 2000 Olympic Games to get the shots that mattered onto the back page
  • Richard Pelham’s camera shows you spectacular opening ceremonies, dramatic knockouts, great goals, moments when the biggest sporting trophies were won and lost: the Ashes, the Champions League, Olympic gold
  • From Mo Farah to Manchester United, from Tiger Woods to Andy Murray, the greatest stars of world sport have all been part of his Life Behind the Lens

Creative Calling

Establish a daily practice, infuse your world with meaning, and succeed in work + life

Life isn’t about “finding” fulfillment and success – it’s about creating it. Why then has creativity been given a back seat in our culture? No longer.

Creativity is a force inside every person that, when unleashed, transforms our lives and delivers vitality to everything we do. Establishing a creative practice is therefore our most valuable and urgent task – as important to our well-being as exercise or nutrition.

The good news? Renowned artist, author, and CreativeLive founder, Chase Jarvis, reminds us that creativity isn’t a skill—it’s a habit available to everyone: beginners and lifelong creators, entrepreneurs to executives, astronauts to zookeepers, and everyone in between. Through small, daily actions we can supercharge our innate creativity and rediscover our personal power in life.

Whether your ambition is a creative career, completing a creative project, or simply cultivating a creative mindset, Creative Calling will unlock your potential via Jarvis’s memorable “IDEA” system:

Imagine your big dream, whatever you want to create—or become—in this world.
Design a daily practice that supports that dream—and a life of expression and transformation.
Execute on your ambitious plans and make your vision real.
Amplify your impact through a supportive community you’ll learn to grow and nurture.

About Chase

Chase Jarvis is an award-winning artist, entrepreneur, and one of the most influential photographers of the past decade.

He has created campaigns for Apple, Nike, Red Bull and others, was a contributor to the Pulitzer-winning New York Times story Snowfall, and earned an Emmy nomination for his documentary Portrait of a City. He also created Best Camera–the first photo app to share images to social networks, and is the Founder of CreativeLive, where more than 10 million students learn photography, video, design, music and business from the world’s top creators and entrepreneurs.

He’s a keynote speaker, an advisor to Fortune 100 brands, and has been a guest at the Obama White House, the United Nations, the Library of Congress, 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, and the DIFC in Dubai.

Talking about Drones

Over the past year or so Drones such as the Phantom and Mavik Pro by DJI have received their fare share of bad press due to some irresponsible behaviour by the minority; however their popularity has far from diminished and their use becoming more and more widespread…and not just in the creative field.

In this episode Glyn chats with “Ian in London” whom he’d originally became aware of through YouTube. A self confessed ‘hobbyist’ Ian has developed a fast growing YouTube Channel where he covers all aspects of Drone use ranging from tips and best practice for successful flights and capturing stunning video and still images, do’s and don’t’s, travelling with drones, qualifications and much more.

Ian carries with him a wealth of knowledge gained through experience and as a CAA qualified (PfCO) Drone Pilot, so if you have a drone, are thinking of getting a drone or are simply curious, you’ll get lots from what he shares in this episode. A great guy with a great attitude, a willingness to share and true testament to how being consistent can lead to bigger things.

In this episode, Glyn shares an interview he did with World War 2 Veteran, Jack Ansell. Jack served with the Royal Corps of Signals for the entire duration of the War and was captured and held as a POW for 4 years being made to carry out forced labour. Jack celebrated his 100th Birthday shortly before this recording, and his story is one not of blood and gore, of which he clearly experienced, but one of human kindness and compassion at times you never would have imagined. This is a story of making the very best of a bad situation and a story of risk versus reward. Check out the 3945portraits.com website where Glyn has shared the video version of this interview too, along with the portraits taken of Jack.

This week's episode may be a tiny bit controversial but it's meant to make us all evaluate why and when we expect something to be free, or considering why you have that expectation. Not having budget isn't always a reason, it's sometimes an excuse. Let's all start valuing each other in the industry and keep the respect at a premium! Dave and Glyn discuss examples and situations they been involved in and look at the design and photography industry seperately and together, why do we have to deal with the assumptions we'll work for free or expect others too. We'd love to hear your experiences and examples of why and why not, tell us about your successes or failures.

Dave chats to Hey Monkey Design's Lenny Terenzi. Dave met Lenny earlier this year at Creative South and as they kept in touch Dave saw Lenny post a heartfelt and very honest blog post about the struggles of running your own business and how to break out of that bad situation. It's honest, frank and full of great advice!

About Lenny - "I'm 45. A Designer, illustrator, educator, screen printer, community builder. A lot of hats, one head. I am a dreamer, blue sky thinker. ENFP-A on the Myers Briggs scale. I thrive in group activities and social interaction. Probably stemming from my days as a touring musician. Blues and Classic R&B if you are curious though my youth was spent with long hair and headbanging to the Sunset Strip." ... "After 15 years of working for myself in a home office, I felt like it was time to think bigger, be bigger. Believe in myself and plant a flag in the ground. So in August of 2014 I signed a lease on a 1700 sq. ft. warehouse space in the bustling and bursting mecca of Durham, North Carolina. A design studio, a print shop, a creative experience where anyone can get energized and inspired to reignite into the best version of themselves."

David Edmonson has been called a “Master Photographer to Master Photographers” and with good reason.

With over 40 years in the industry, the indelible impact David Edmonson leaves with clients, students and peers around the world is remarkable. No doubt, his signature style is unmistakable. But it’s his “Iron-Sharpens-Iron” philosophy that has fueled his art and professional success.

A relentless pursuit of excellence through competition. Selfless mentorship. A hands-on benevolence with his passionate charities. Simply put, the “Edmonson Way” means that giving is a both a privilege and a path to self-improvement; for himself and those he encounters. David, is a Grand Master Photographer of WPPI, was bestowed with WPPI’s Lifetime Achievement the organizations highest honor. It’s often said that Art Imitates Life. If you’ve ever seen the work of David Edmonson, this is clearly true: “Profound with dimensionality, ingrained with emotion and compelling in their beauty."

In 2015, Luke, a Double Master of WPPI, presented his father David with WPPI’s Lifetime Achievement the organizations highest honor. Luke is al-so one of the three founders and and a graduate of WPPI’s Certification Program for Wedding & Portrait Photographers, the first ever of its kind.

…This is the Edmonson Way.

Recapturist is Bill Rose. Bill Rose documents the aesthetics of vintage American design.

The most visually pleasing parts of American design are fading away. The glorious neon signs that once lined our roadsides are nearly extinct. Mid-Century modern architecture is increasingly hard to find among non-residential structures. And products that used to come branded with machine-stamped chrome badges and hand-drawn typographical elements are now made overseas and marked with plastic decals.

This tragic state of affairs is widening the gap between the golden age of design and the present day. So Bill has spent the last decade-plus on a mission to capture the finest examples of what’s left. He travels the back roads of America looking for neon signs, junkyards, yard sales, antique stores, estate sales–anywhere evidence of these endangered designs can still be found.

The result is a graphic collection of design and typography from an era that predates the computers and specialized software used by modern-day designers. These images depict forms that were conceived, created, and produced manually on a drawing table using tools and techniques that are nearly obsolete today.

These designers were true craftsmen. Bill's hope is that his site http://www.recapturist.com can serve as a reference guide–a resource that helps bridge the design and typographic styles of the past with those of today–and perhaps even be a source of inspiration for whatever comes next. https://twitter.com/recapturist // https://www.instagram.com/recapturist/ // https://www.facebook.com/recapturist // http://www.pinterest.com/recapturist

Glyn Dewis and Dave Clayton discuss two topics today, workshops and training in part one, then they discuss that Marmite of social media, hashtags and brand tagging. As per usual, these are Glyn and Dave's thoughts, PLEASE give them your feedback as to why you do it and how it benefits you. #HSHD

In both the photography and design world, workshops are necessary to learn from but can be a very lazy way of making money for the wrong reasons. In the season half they discuss the overuse of hashtags and being unofficial 'brand ambassadors' - what's the purpose and does it weaken the brand if the content isn't up to scratch?

What are your thoughts on each subject, they'd love to hear from you on social media @heshootshedraws and on the website glyndewis.com/hshdpodcast
