This week we're covering an oldie but a goodie: Luis Alberto Urrea's THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAY. Originally published in the early aughts, this book tells the story of a group of Mexican migrants who attempted to cross the unforgiving Arizona desert. Spoiler: It went terribly for everyone involved.
Unfortunately, this story remains incredibly relevant at the border, and Erika and Clare discuss how not much has really changed in the 21 years since these poor men set out across the desert.

In this episode, our intrepid hosts discuss Amanda Montell's Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism. As the title suggests, the book is about the linguistic techniques cults use to shut down critical thinking and encourage compliance. Groups as diverse as Jonestown and CrossFit are covered--and yes, Scientology and MLMs also make an appearance. You will never think of phrases like "it is what it is" in the same way again...which is good, because you were probably overusing them, anyway.

In this episode, Clerika discuss Susannah Cahalan's The Great Pretender: The Undercover Mission That Changed Our Understanding of Madness. The book covers the famous Rosenhan experiment, which took place in the late sixties and early seventies and involved regular people faking their way into insane asylums. The experiment helped justify the closing of the asylums and the revamping of the DSM, so it was kind of a big deal. But wait--there's a shocking twist! Which we will annoyingly NOT reveal in the show notes!

It's our second-to-last episode of the season, and it's definitely cursed! This week, Clerika takes on the life of Hatshepsut--that barrier-breaking, gender-bending female king of ancient Egypt. Unfortunately, because of the paucity of available sources, there's a lot of uncertainty in this one. But don't worry! Also, trigger warning: Apparently the ancient Egyptians were not shy about sexualizing extremely young girls. It gross. It's time for part two of Push Back! But before we get to that, something...weird happened in the United States this Wednesday. Donald Trump threw himself an itsy bitsy wittle coup. You know, the kind of mistake that ANY fascist dictator might make as he's being shown the door!
Why is everyone being SO UNCOOL about this?
Anyway, Erika and Clare discuss that landmark historical event for...awhile, as an intro to the episode. If you're all coup-ed out, our discussion of Push Back begins at 49.14.
As for the actual episode, we get into the nitty gritty details of how, exactly, the natural childbirth, lactivist, and attachment parenting industries are lying their asses off and causing parents (especially mothers) undue stress and torment. Highlights include the fact that breast milk is not the liquid gold lactivists claim it is: Breastfed infants do have some minor protection against colds and diarrhea for the first year, but that's it. Seriously. THAT IS IT. In addition, an epidural cannot "sedate" your baby, and children actually attach to their parents very quickly and easily--which means that all the elaborate rituals attachment parenting gurus demand are a bullshit waste of time. Get ready to enjoy a full buffet of pseudoscience, misogyny, and treating children like glorified props in their parents' lives!

Happy New Year, nerds! It's a Social Justice Book Club week, and this time around, we're discussing Dr. Amy Tuteur's "Push Back: Guilt in the Age of Natural Parenting."
Dr. Tuteur is a retired OBGYN who has become somewhat notorious in certain crunchy corners of the Internet for critiquing the natural childbirth and natural parenting industries. In her book, Dr. Tuteur discusses the anti-feminist origins of natural childbirth in particular, as well its gender essentialist rhetoric.
Why do we care? Because as Tuteur makes clear, so much of the information natural childbirth and natural parenting advocates spout is fundamentally wrong--and yet they've been allowed to dictate the course of many public health campaigns, including the ongoing effort to bully women into breastfeeding for longer. Also, taken to its most extreme, this shit can become a death cult--but no one cares, because the only people who die are women and babies.
So strap in, folks: We're going to start off 2021 by talking birthing plans, midwives, and why you should absolutely, positively NEVER "trust birth."

Cleopatra was the last pharaoh, but she was not an actual Egyptian: Her ancestor, Ptolemy I, was a Macedonian Greek who claimed the land in part by running off with Alexander the Great's mummified corpse.
The Ptolemies were...a lot.
In this episode, Clerika discuss the hot mess incest express that was Ptolemaic Dynasty, and how Cleopatra made the best of the absolute shit sandwich she inherited. The theme of this season is royal women, and up first is Rosemary Kennedy! Rosemary was the oldest daughter of Joe and Rose Kennedy, and sister to one president and two senators. Unfortunately for Rosemary, her birth was badly mishandled, and she was left with an intellectual disability because of prolonged oxygen deprivation. Even more unfortunately, her parents could never accept her for who she was, which led Joe to have her lobotomized at the age of 23.

The only female emperor in Chinese history, Empress Wu ruled in her own right, which is cool, but to get there, she had to murder a bunch of people, which is less cool. Also featured: a LARPing crown prince, the statue of a fallen dancing boy, dueling concubines, a nunnery turned whorehouse, and an alleged murder that was probably just an elaborate setup for a really bad sex joke.

This week's episode is the second part of a two-part series about Empress Dowager Cixi, who ruled China from roughly 1860-1908.
When we left off, Erika had just gotten into the wine and Cixi's son had just died, which should have been the end of her (since, you know, he was the only reason she was in power). In this episode, Cixi makes some bold moves--and things mostly go her way for a long, long time. So why is her historical legacy, for lack of a better word, completely f#cked? As we'll see, Cixi does make some genuinely bad decisions--no one gets in bed with the Boxer Rebellion and comes out looking good--but sometimes, her hand was forced. Like that concubine was forced, all the way down that well.

In this episode, Clerika travel back to 19th-century China to discuss Dowager Empress Cixi (pronounced Cee-Chee). Cixi rose from being lower-ranked concubine to dragging China--kicking and screaming--into the 19th century. So why does she still have such a bad rap? In this first of two episodes, our girls talk about Cixi's rise, and how choosing a conservative education for your child can have drastic consequences--you know, if he's the emperor or whatever. Also, at least two of Clare's cats show up.

In this episode of Rude History, Clare and Erika (Clerika?) discuss the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Rorschach. It turns out that one of these personality tests is total BS--and it's probably not the one you think.
After recording, the gals looked through the Rorschach together (check out the link at the bottom). Erika's results indicate that she's an artist with a unique way of looking at the world. Clare's indicate that she's probably a serial killer.
