IN 1985, the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company wrung a 15 percent pay cut from employees in return for an apparent will-o’-the-wisp: a share of profits from an aluminum refinery that was a perennial money loser.Brack W. Duker, the corporate executive who had just bought the refinery from the Atlantic Richfield Company for a symbolic $1, held out a firm promise, many workers recall. If the aluminum market ever recovered, Mr. Duker assured them as he lobbied for the plan, ‘’a dollar in your pocket is a dollar in mine.’’
In the end, the workers reluctantly accepted the offer. And the price of aluminum did in fact recover – far beyond anyone’s expectations. Starting in 1986, Columbia Falls Aluminum became a money-making machine.
But over the next five years, rather than splitting the take, Mr. Duker and his minority partner, Jerome Broussard, funneled much of the money into offshore bank accounts. Before they cut off their union and salaried employees altogether, the two men had awarded $84 million to them and $231 million to themselves. As it turned out, a dollar in the pockets of workers would be nearly $3 in those of the owners.

The Proposed Action to clean up the Superfund site calls for a slurry wall that would contain cyanide and fluoride that is in the groundwater in high concentrations near the West Landfill and the former wet scrubber sludge pond.
The wall would contain the waste, the EPA said, and keep it from flowing away from the landfills. While concentrations of cyanide and fluoride are high in groundwater close to the landfills, the groundwater has low to no cyanide by the time it flows to the Flathead River.
The Proposed Action also calls for scraping away contaminated soils on the site that were close to the plant and burying them on the wet scrubber sludge pond and then recapping it.
The cost of that cleanup is estimated at $57 million.

Dr. Pall received his BA degree in Physics at Johns Hopkins University, with honors, Phi Beta Kappa and his PhD degree in Biochemistry and Genetics at Caltech, two of the top institutions in the world. His PhD training focused on how to determine biological mechanisms. The PhD training and the physics have each been central to his groundbreaking recent work on how low intensity electromagnetic fields (EMFs) impact the cells of our bodies and the many health consequences produced by that mechanism. Dr. Pall’s Hirsch index of 36 significantly increased since he “retired,” demonstrating a high level of recognition for his research generally and his recent research in particular.
Since 1998, Dr. Pall’s research has focused on mechanisms of chronic disease; oxidative / nitrosative stress; inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, other mechanisms; environmental stressors causing chronic disease; regulatory systems acting to prevent chronic disease; chemicals acting to trigger chronic disease via excessive NMDA activity; mechanism of action of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) via activation of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC).
Dr. Pall has published several important works on the EMF VGCC mechanism. The first of these, published in 2013, was placed on the Global Medical Discovery Website as one of the most important medical papers of 2013. According to Google Scholar, it has been cited at least 472 times (ca. 2023).
Much of Dr. Pall’s subsequent work, has greatly expanded our understanding of what EMF effects are produced via VGCC activation, how they are produced, and why the VGCCs are so stunningly sensitive to activation by weak EMFs.
Collectively Dr. Pall’s research shows:
- Most non-thermal microwave frequency EMF effects are produced by EMF activation of the VGCCs.
- A large number of effects are produced by such EMF exposures including:
- Many fertility / reproductive effects
- Many neurological / neuropsychiatric effects
- Attacks on the DNA of our cells
- Oxidative stress / free radical damage
- Increased apoptotic cell death
- Widespread endocrine (hormonal) effects
- Excessive intracellular calcium and cancer
- Each of these effects, in addition six other probable effects, can be explained as being due to VGCC activation.
