This morning, Brother Danny shared with the congregation from the first 11 verses of Galatians chapter 4. In this passage, the Apostle Paul used the example of roman children to demonstrate to the Galatians that going back to the slavery to the Law, and their inability to keep it was akin to a grown adult seeking to put themselves back under the authority of their parent’s guardian’s authority, in effect, throwing away their freedom. In this passage, there are some important principles for the believers within the church to hold onto as we minister in our families, in our congregation, and in our communities. First, we need to recognize that ministry is something we cannot do by ourselves. We may need other believers, and we always need the Holy Spirit in order to be successful. In this small passage, Paul reminds his readers that one of the ways we honor God is by living sanctified lives. While sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, our cooperation with the Spirit is what makes that sanctification effective. We also honor God by being useful in the kingdom. This morning, Brother Danny shared with us the important Message that Paul had for Timothy, recorded in 2 Timothy 2:1-6, that discipleship is difficult. First, discipleship is only possible by God’s grace. We cannot come to faith through our own efforts, nor can we grow in our relationship with the Lord through our own strength. It is only by God’s grace, and through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can be disciples. Second, discipleship results in hardship. Today, Brother Danny takes us through 2 Chronicles chapter 34, to show three principles of Awakening that must take place in our lives. The first of which is that only God’s word can convict us of the need for awakening in our spiritiual lives. This morning, Brother Danny brought us to Joshua 24, verses 14 through 27. This passage helps us understand that one of the keys to the revival that must come is that we must, individually and repeatedly decide how we will respond to God’s call to decision. We must choose to take a public stand as a follower of jesus. This doesn’t mean being abrasive or obnoxious in our Christianity, but it does mean that we have to live publicly for Jesus. This morning, Brother Danny shared with us from the Book of Hosea, the call for repentance for God’s people. There are three key points to this message. First, in order to have real repentance, one must have real awareness of sin. We have have to realise that sin isn’t merely a mistake, it is a crippling problem. Second, real repentance requires more than platitudes of apology. It must come from a contrite heart. This morning, Brother Danny shared from the prophecy of Isaiah, chapter 55, verses 1 through 3. In this passage, God says three things to his covenant people, and these three things have great implication for the church. First, God says “I can freely give you what you need.” God’s grace is what we need in order to be renewed and awakened to the call of the gospel. Second, God says “I can offer you a satisfaction that the world cannot.” No matter where we may try to find satisfaction, only God can give us what our soul desires. This morning, using the text from 2 Chronicles 30, verses 1 through 9, Brother Danny calls the church to go back to basics. In this text, we find three truths that the church needs to take hold of. First, we need to return to what has been neglected. For the people of Judah, that was the observance of the Passover. For the church of today, we need to return to the spiritual disciplines that we once had a passion for. Second, we must pay attention to God’s call to return. As we begin a new series this morning, Brother Danny shares with us from the Book of Judges, chapter 2, verses 10-19. In these verses we see the pattern of the book, and the life of Israel immediately following the conquest of Canaan. Brother Danny encourges us to consider the cause of stumbling, as it is shown in Judges. When we fail to acknowledge God, we will suffer calamity. Rather we must constantly be renewed in our relationship with God. We must also consider the effect of stumbling. The human condition says that we WILL serve something. This Resurrection Sunday, Brother Danny shares three truths from 1 John Chapter 5 that should cause the Christian to rejoice. First, Our risen Lord keeps us safe. Jesus will not allow his followers to be overrun by temptation, He always provides a way of escape. Second, our risen Lord delivers us from Satan’s control. This morning, Brother Danny shares the promise of answered prayer. John tells his readers very clearly, that we can be confident that God hears our prayers as we pray in His will. In this short passage, he reiterates the point of John’s letter to the church, and that is so that they may know that they have eternal life. This morning, Brother Danny shares with us the evidences that John lists in his letter. These evidences convict and convince the believer of the truth of Jesus life, death, and resurrection. Brother Danny shares 1 John 1, verses 5 through 10 this morning. In this passage John deals with the truth that Christians have to choose whether to live in darkness, or live in the light. The first principle in our text is that God is pure light, there is no darkness in Him, at all. The second principle is that mankind has a problem (sin) that must be overcome, and that can only come by the third principle. In these passages, John prepares his readers to defend against the coming gnostic heresy which eats away at the core of Christianity. The first principle is that God grants His children a source of strength for their journey. The second explicit principle of the text is that God grants His children stability for their path. As Brother Danny takes us into the third chapter of Habakkuk, we see a change of heart in the prophet, from the angry and indignant questioning of the first two chapters to the heartfelt plea for mercy that we find here in chapter three. In this passage, God’s prophet pronounces calamity against the Babylonians for their cruelty to their enemies. There are three aspects of this cruelty that are called out by the prophet. The first aspect of cruelty comes from our selfish desires. The second comes from our mocking heart. The third from the human thirst for violence. In this passage, God’s prophet warns the Chaldeans (Babylon) against the danger of arrogant pride, or hubris. But, before we can say that the warning doesn’t apply to us, we should also note that there are many places in God’s word where this same warning is given to God’s people. An attitude of Hubris refelcts a mindset of arrogance, leads to the exploitation of others, and ultimately results in a shame filled judgement on the one who is so arrogantly prideful. After all that Paul has taught in this letter, it is obviousl that he desires not only this church, but all of the churches to reach out and care for one another, to help bear each other’s burdens, and to show love to our fellow believers as we labor for the kingdom of God. This morning, as Brother Danny continues leading us through Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Christians, we look at this passage often referred to as “The Armor of God.” As Danny looks at each of the Elements of this armor, he reminds us that we are not expected to fight spiritual battles in our own strength. Rather, we are to trust in the all sufficient strength of our Father. Additionally, we are to use the armor that God has provided us in order to withstand the assault that will come as we walk in obedience to Christ. And finally, we are not to neglect the importance of praying for those who walk beside us in the battle as well. As Brother Danny concludes Paul’s discussion about Christian relationships, we cover an especially pertinent passage in chapter 6, verses 5-9. In this passage Christian bondservants (slaves, workers) are admionished to remember that their true master is Christ. As we continue through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Paul continues his look at the Christian life and how it correlates to our relationships, today with the emphasis on the parent-child relationship. Even though the original readers of Paul’s letter would have been very familiar with the concept parental authority, Paul reminds these Christian children that is it right to obey their parents “in the Lord.” He also advises parents to not lay expectations and standards upon their children that would drive them to anger and wrath, and could potentially drive them away from serving Jesus. /// Scripture: Ephesians 6:1-4 | Speaker: Bro. Following Paul’s thought that Christian relationships ought to be built on a foundation of mutual submission and love, Brother Danny shares with the church from Ephesians chapter 5, verses 25-33. In this passage Paul explains to his readers that, in the marriage relationship, husbands are commanded to sacrificially choose to demonstrate love towards their wives in an active way. After completing his instruction on putting off and putting on, Paul shifts to another theme, that of mutual submission among believers. He begins with his thesis - “submit to one another in love” - and continues by looking at the implications for several human relationships. The first up is husband and wife, and Paul starts by expressing how that looks from the wife’s perspective. Many in the faith have taken these verses to mean things that they do not mean; Bro. Paul wraps up his discussion of putting off and putting on by looking at the wisdom of God. Paul continues his theme of the transformation that Christ should have in the life of the believer. In today’s section, he emphasizes the importance of avoiding the paths of darkness, and walking instead in the light of who they now are.

Paul continues his theme of putting off and putting on by listing some of the sinful activities the Ephesian church was doing, and what they should do instead. The unloving actions were causing the world to question their faith, but by reorienting themselves to God’s purpose, they could begin living for Him. Paul calls us all to imitate God by walking in love.

Paul reminds the church at Ephesus that they are not who they once were; they are new creations in Christ. He reminded them that their prior way of living was contrary to what God wanted them to do, and that they had been given a new identity. They needed (and we need) to realize that this transformation must be intentional; we are not helpless to resist the draw of our old selves, but we must resist if we are to be who God wants us to be.

In the passage we studied last week, Paul emphasized unity in Christ. In the verses immediately following, though, he also focuses on the diversity that exists within the Body of Christ, the church. All gifts are given by God, and should be used to build His church; and, while we may have different gifts, we should value all of them, and realize that none of us are non-essential parts of the Body.

The Gospels record two instances of Christ’s followers who saw Him after His resurrection, but did not recognize Him at first. The reality that they thought they knew did not match up with true reality, and the reality of Christ’s presence healed the immense pain they had in their hearts.

In the tradition of those who followed God, when Jesus came, there were two divisions - the Jews, who were on the inside as God’s chosen people; and Gentiles, who were everyone else. Paul tells the church at Ephesus that these two divisions no longer exist, because Jesus Christ has torn them down. His death is the instrument that brings us peace, and through Him, we can find wholeness and move beyond the barriers our world continues to erect today.

In our message from the Book of Ephesians this morning, Brother Danny explains what Paul means in chapter 2, verses 11 through 13. Brother Danny continues taking us through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, today in chapter 2, verses 8 through 10. In these verses, Paul expresses first the nature of our salvation; that God alone is responisble for every aspect of our salvation. Second, Paul wants his readers to understand how dear we are to the Author of our salvation. As His masterpieces, God looks at us with love and joy. Finally, Paul explains that the Christian isn’t merely saved FROM something; as Christians, we are saved FOR the good works that God has prepared for us to do.

As Brother Danny takes us into chapter 2 of Paul’s letter to the Ephesian believers, he explains Paul’s statment in verse 1 of chapter 2 that all believers were, at the first, dead in ther sins. There is nothing they, or we, could do to effect our salvation. Without Christ, we would be doomed to a life of slavery. But, through an act of mercy, God reached out and changed us through His Son, Jesus Christ.
