I recently did a corporate workshop around trusting people at work.
When you’re in a personal or intimate relationship with someone, you get to choose whether you’re in that relationship or not. And one of the reasons you choose to be in a relationship is based on how much you trust someone.
At work, you don’t always get to choose who you work with. Often you’re building trust and trying to do your best work at the same time and sometimes it feels like those two things can be at cross-purposes.
You feel like you’re forced into choosing between ‘trusting this person’ and ‘being recognized for doing my great work’.
But that’s a false choice.
I would actually say that in order to show up at your best, you must be trusting. Does that sound naive? I’m going to prove to you that it’s quite the opposite. I’ve tried it both ways and being distrustful of people only hurts you.
Tune in to this week’s episode to discover the obvious and not so obvious ways of trusting people at work, how not trusting can make you untrustworthy in the process and what you can do instead. A world where you trust people despite their behaviour sounds a bit naive, but I’m going to show you why it’s actually the smartest, shrewdest thing you can do for yourself and your team.
I’ve talked about perfectionism before. This week, I wanted to take a slightly different view on it. Perfectionism can show up in really sneaky ways and plagues smart people and high-achievers and stops you from making significant progress on your goals. Perfectionist thinking is so crafty that you wouldn’t even consider yourself a perfectionist, yet it could still be a blind spot.
Join me as I talk about some of the perfectionist thinking that is getting in your way without knowing it and share exactly what you need to do to stop perfectionist thinking in its tracks.
I’ll share two concepts that will help you bypass perfectionism for good. More importantly, these concepts will help you reach your goals faster and with a lot less anxiety and stress.
So that next time you set a goal for yourself, you’ll know for sure that you have the ability to follow through and achieve it. No watering it down. Not take backs or start overs. Just you, trusting yourself to always do what you say you’re going to do.
In this episode we cover how best to utilize friends, mentors and coaches to get you the informed support you need to achieve your goals faster with a lot less drama.
Getting the support you need is critical to enjoying your job and being great at it. Most people would believe that. But it’s amazing how many smart people either don’t ask for help at all. Or they aren’t strategic about who they ask for help.
Whether we realize it or not, most people gravitate to asking a safe resource for help vs. the right resource.
In this episode, we cover how you’re never too smart or experienced to ask for help and how best to utilize friends, mentors, and coaches to get you the informed support you need to achieve your goals faster with a lot less drama.
You can definitely benefit from feedback. Feedback is a tool you can use to accelerate your growth. Of course it is. Unfortunately, most people suck at giving feedback at work. Often the feedback is not thought through and is delivered up as criticism.
That is a true tragedy. But that’s not what I want to talk to you about today.
What I want to chat about is how not to make other people’s messy feedback into a mess for yourself.
I believe feedback is a good thing. It helps you grow faster. Unfortunately, not all feedback is relevant feedback. And not all relevant feedback is delivered effectively.
Your job is to hear all of it, weed through it, decide what to keep and avoid using it against yourself by taking it personally.
And I know that can be a big ask - particularly if the feedback is direct, served critically and coming from someone with authority. When that happens, it’s easy to make the feedback mean something is wrong with you and beat the crap out of yourself.
And you know that beating the crap out of yourself never works and leads to all sorts of other messy behaviors that are a giant waste of your time and talent.
I want to help you learn to use badly delivered feedback to your advantage. That’s the focus of this week’s podcast episode that’s obviously called “Use Badly Delivered Feedback to Your Advantage”
Are you worried you’re wasting your time at the job you have right now? How will you gauge whether you are or not?
Most of the time, people get bored with their jobs, or they’ve been somewhere a long time, or they’re not getting ahead fast enough and they start to think “Am I wasting my time here?”.
I’ve done it. So I know exactly what you’re going through. And it took me a long time to figure it out.
I don’t want you to go through that, so I’m going to give you the punchline right now. You’re not wasting time at your job. You’re wasting time spinning in confusion about what to do about your career! You’re worried about making the best next career move for you, but you have no idea what ‘best career move’ means.
You’re waiting for the perfect solution to magically present itself to you.
Well OK my friends, here it is. Here is the magic solution you’ve been waiting for.
Listen to Am I Wasting My Time Here? In this episode, I’m going to teach you to answer that question once and for all.
So you want to be promoted. Good goal. What’s the plan?
When I ask people that, their answer often is ‘be really great at my job’. OK. That’s one strategy. What else ya got?
Getting promoted is about a lot more than just doing your job well. I mean, that’s important too. But there's more to it than that. And frankly, are you sure you’re doing your job well? How are you measuring that? How are the decision makers measuring that?
If you want to get promoted, you want to make it so that it’s a no brainer for all the decision makers.
You want to make it so when they’re sitting around a table (or a zoom call), having a talent management discussion, and your name comes up, everyone is like “oh ya, for sure she should be promoted - no question”.
Often people think that their only input into their promotion is how well they do their job. And that’s not totally true. You have a lot more control than that. You don’t have to wait around for other people to decide if you’re ready.
In this week’s episode, I’m going to take you through my A.I.M. method to being promoted. It’s all about Assess, Incrementalize and Market. Use this method to build a plan to get promoted faster, easier and with a lot less drama.
Wouldn’t it be great to walk into work every day and everywhere you went people are saying “hey great job”, “way to go”, “you’re the best”, “we’re so lucky to have you”, “keep up the great work”.
Can you imagine? What would that be like?
It would be weird. And then it would be awesome for a while (assuming you believed them). And then, eventually, it wouldn’t be enough anymore. It would become white noise. You would need more.
It’s actually kinda like an addiction. You need more and more reminders you’re great in order to actually BE GREAT. The biggest problem with this addiction is you can’t control when you get your ‘next hit’.
The only way to break the appreciation addiction is to get off the junk. The junk in this case is the reliance on other people to confirm your greatness...
I mean, it’s nice when it happens. But frankly, you need consistent appreciation you can control. And that comes from you.
The trick is how do you go from self-doubt to self-appreciation? I mean if it was easy, then everyone would do it, right? So ya… it’s not easy, but it is simple. You might believe that appreciating yourself is impossibly hard work, but believe me… it’s way easier than waiting around for someone else to notice how awesome you are.
Plus, once it clicks… you’ll be off ‘the junk’ for good. And that’s a freedom worth fighting for.
In this episode, you’ll learn why appreciation is so important, how it impacts your performance and how to get more of it for yourself.
Do you have a 90-Day Plan on the go right now? Having a 90-Day plan is gold. Logically it’s a no-brainer. But in reality, not many people have them.
Why not?
They think it will take too long. Or they don’t know how to write a 90-Day plan. Or they think they can get along without one.
Or they think it’s just for when you start a new job or role. And that’s what I call a missed opportunity.
An ongoing 90-Day plan will transform you from someone who’s all over the place, burnt out and jumping from one fire to another into someone who consistently has their sh*t together and who systematically (and consistently) achieves goals.
And bonus. You spend a lot less time on useless, time-sucking BS.
The trick is to make it easy. How can you make writing and following a 90 Day plan really simple?
In this episode, I’m talking about the easy 90-Day plan. I’ll cover when to write one, the three simple questions to answer and how to stay easily connected to your plan every day.

Managing failure is integral to success. But not a lot of people acknowledge that.
It's one of the things that hold people back from realizing their full potential. Why?
Because fear of failure can stagnate your growth.
Even the people who are used to taking chances struggle with managing failure at work.
Which is understandable.. It brings on such a negative notion that people would rather play it safe than risk a new idea.
Especially because failure at work is often “frowned upon”. Let’s be honest, you get in trouble when you fail at work. People tend to freak out and start playing the blame game.
“It doesn’t feel like I’m allowed to make a mistake at work.”
So if I need to fail to be successful, but the people at work don’t want me to fail, what’s the solution? How do I turn this lose-lose situation into a win-win?
This is something a lot of people struggle with.
So in this episode, we’re talking about how to manage failure at work. You’re going to go from someone who’s afraid to make a mistake or push the envelope for fear of repercussions to someone who knows how to create space for failure in your organization. You will no longer be afraid of making a mistake or thinking big because you’re going to know how to manage your organization and yourself pre, post and during failure.
You’re going to learn how to manage small failures after the fact, how to manage expectations for big risk BEFORE you move forward and how to manage your own mind throughout the process.
By creating a safe space for failure, you accelerate your success. Your growth doesn’t have to be stagnated by your company’s aversion to failure. Managing failure helps you have fun, be innovative, grow and not let what other people say about you get in your way.
Listen to: Managing Failure at Work.
Have you ever wished you could love your job more?
You don’t always think loving your job is important, but it’s more important than you think.
You might think that love and work don't go together. But the people that come up to me use the word "love" or "hate" when they try to express how they feel or want about their job, their workmates, or their boss.
And why wouldn't you be concerned about loving your job when you spend so much time doing it? I mean, it's only logical, right? It's one of the most important relationships in your life, whether you treat it that way or not.
How you feel about your job impacts your whole life.
And here’s the good news. You don’t have to be in the perfect job, with the perfect boss and the perfect role that perfectly aligns with your passions to love your job.
You can love it right now. Don’t believe me? Ok… but what if I’m right?
In this episode, you're gonna learn what it means to love your job and how you can create a love for the job you have right now.
Making career decisions is where people spend a lot of time spinning out. The #1 thing people bring up when they first talk to me is “I don’t know what I want from my career”. And I’m generally speaking to strong, ambitious, intelligent women.
These women have already achieved so much in their careers (whether they believe that or not). And yet… when it comes to making career decisions for themselves, they’re lost. Why?
It’s simple. They believe making the “wrong” career decisions will impact their happiness. They think that they can only be happy if they make the absolute perfect career decisions.
You often think the job you choose has control over your happiness, or the city you live in, or the person you marry, or the boss you have, or your job title has control over your happiness.
And so you think that you need to control all those external things in order to be happy.
It’s exhausting. And btw, it doesn’t work anyway.
You are too smart to be giving away so much power.
Because what determines if those things are the right choices for you?
You do.
So the only way something is a ‘wrong decision’ is if you let it be.
The power over your happiness is something YOU can control and has nothing to do with what happens after you make your decisions.
And that’s what we’re covering in this episode.
In this episode, you’ll learn how to make career decisions that you don’t regret. Ever.
So now you can save all that time worrying and spinning and invest it back into yourself. Imagine what can happen when you do that!
Personal Branding is something you often don’t really think about. Most people just think if they do their jobs well, that’s enough. That’s their personal brand. And isn’t that enough?
No. Not if you’re someone who wants to grow in your industry…’cos guess what? There are a lot of people who do a good job doing what you do.
So what makes you special? That’s an excellent question and the one I intend to help you answer.
Great brands know what they stand for, tell people consistently and continuously evolve to changing consumer needs. And that goes for you too.
In this episode, you’re going to learn how personal branding can transform you from being a run-of-the-mill commodity to being a sought after asset without having to spend any time transforming your performance.
Work relationships are as important to your career success as any achievement on the job. You know it’s true. You’ve seen the people who aren’t so great at the job, but nail the relationship part. Yet so many people let the work relationships go or don’t make time for them.
It’s a miss my friends.
The good news is, you can not only refresh work relationships at any time and easily make them work for you. Even the crappy ones.
In this episode, I’m going to show you how to never have another bad work relationship, and how to fix the ones that are getting in your way.
Discomfort is the price of your success, my friends. Yes, I’m giving you the punchline upfront because knowing the price of success is not enough.
You must know how to pay the price of discomfort.
This is no easy task. It sounds way easier than it is. Your survival brain doesn’t want you to feel uncomfortable so it’s going to fight you all the way along. That’s how it’s wired.
But the high-achiever that you are doesn’t have to let your survival brain drive the bus.
In this episode, I’m going to arm you with the knowledge of the kinds of discomfort that serve your success vs. the discomfort that spins you away from success… ‘cos not all discomfort is created equal.
AND, I’m going to arm you with the daily ritual that I use to notice where the discomfort shows up so you can make the best investment of your time and energy and move towards success faster!
Lots of people struggle to get the career results they want. It doesn’t matter if the result is a better relationship with their boss, a new title, success on a project or a new leadership behaviour you’re working on.
When you stretch yourself to get a different or new career result, you can experience all sorts of drama that wants to get in the way; self-judgment, disappointment, avoidance, anxiety just to name a few dramas.
I bet you can’t wait to experience all of that, eh?
Sounds like a hoot right? No. Not a hoot.
The reason that most people don’t achieve their goals is because it’s not a hoot.
It’s more like a freakin’ rollercoaster that upsets your stomach.
So knowing that the price of getting your career results is a rollercoaster of emotions, what do you do?
In this episode, we’re going to talk about the #1 thing you can do to get the career results you want.
It’s a very simple thing.
But hard to do… so we’re also going to talk about how to do it.
If you’re stubborn like me, this podcast will resonate with you.
Some people think they don’t need a career plan. They just need to do a good job. And that would be find if your job and career were the same thing. But they are not.
Your job is just one strategy in your career plan. There are at least 5 other strategies you might want to consider if you want to make your career plans a reality.
You may be touching on some of them in the course of your job, but if you get purposeful about how you handle these strategies, it will accelerate your career growth and help you achieve the success you deserve.
And you don’t have to invest more time into work if you don’t want to.
Sound good? It’s more than good. It’s smart.
A lot of people talk about ‘working smart’ when it comes to getting your job done. Having a well-strategized career plan is working smart for your success.
You set a goal because you dream about being successful.
It’s the time of year when we erase all the failures of the past and start with a clean slate. We set ourselves a new goal and start afresh. And then what?
Most people will quit on their goals in the first month.
So what’s the difference between goal dreamers and goal achievers?
A big thing is not underestimating the work that needs to be done. If you want to be successful it takes focus and commitment. And a big part of that is doing the hard work of managing your brain throughout the process.
To make it a little easier on you, I want to share the main reason goal dreamers fail on their goals so you can be aware of those pitfalls.
But the most important tool that goal achievers have is their attitude. What makes them successful is how they think about their goal, and how those thoughts drive the actions they need to take.
In this episode, I share the top 4 thoughts that successful people think so that they stick to their goals until they achieve them.
A lot of people have a career plan.
However, most of those people don’t actually use it. Or follow it. Or look at it more than 3-4 times a year.
It’s just such a missed opportunity.
The lowest of the low hanging fruit really.
But telling you that isn’t really gonna motivate you to do anything about it. We love to NOT do things that are good for us.
It’s a total design flaw of the human brain.
Instead, what might be more motivating is talking about what you're missing.
What are you missing out on by NOT spending 15-20 min a day on your career plan?
In this week’s episode of The Career Reset Podcast, I’m giving you 5 really big reasons to prioritize your career plan in 2021… and what you’re going to miss out on if you don’t
Listen @ thecareerreset.com/53
And I promise you when you see them all together, you’ll see why it’s a no-brainer to make planning for your career a much bigger priority in 2021.
I want to talk about another little terminology I came up with… Career Impotence!
It’s a little provocative… I know. But sometimes you need a little shock to see what’s happening right in front of you.
I want to really highlight the drama that people have when they experience career impotence because a ton of people have it and oftentimes, the people who have it think it’s no big deal.
Impotence is when you’re unable to take effective action. And career impotence is when you’re unable to take effective action in your career.
It’s when we stay stuck in indecision and I don’t know.
I don’t know what I want. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know the right next move… etc., etc.
So today, we’re going to talk about the dangers of career impotence, how it happens, and of course, what you can do to get your mojo back…. so to speak …
So if you’re stuck in uncertainty and confusion about your career, then this episode is for you.
A situation that I’m presented with all time is “I think I want to change careers”.
Usually, people struggle with that back and forth for a while. And if that’s you, then you absolutely need to listen to this episode.
Because it’s a good question. How DO you know if it’s time to change careers? How do you know it’s not just a phase or a quick or easy way out of a bad situation?
And let’s be honest. There’s nothing quick or easy about changing careers. So you’d better be sure.
Here’s what I DON’T recommend you do.
I don’t recommend you jump at the first neat idea.
I don’t recommend quitting and figuring it out later.
And I don’t recommend making any sudden moves if you’re feeling fed-up, exhausted and angry.
I’m not saying you can’t figure it out, but you’re making your path to success much more difficult than it needs to be.
Instead, I recommend doing the work in this episode to help you make an informed and pragmatic decision.
WARNING… what I’m going to suggest you do isn’t sexy or a quick fix. This work is going to take some effort from you. But I’m telling you if you put this effort in upfront, you’ll have a much easier time in the back end.
And by the way - if you’re looking for a sexy quick fix to change careers, then that’s definitely a sign that you want a change for the wrong reasons.
I want to offer you a simple formula for career success. You’re going to bring it down to the numbers today.
Oftentimes, when you’re going after your career success, it’s tougher than you thought it’d be. Your brain is resistant to doing the things you know you should do (see Success Intolerance). And so, if it’s tough, it’s because YOU are making it tougher than it needs to be.
All the stress, fear and discomfort are coming from you, whether you know it or not. You have thoughts that are creating all the negative emotions and slowing down your traction towards career success.
You’re getting in your own way with all the drama.
And the only way to get out of your own way is to get your head under control and to stop focusing on all the obstacles and negativity.
That’s why mindset management and coaching are the best investment you could ever make. I wish I’d done it years ago.
But what should you do instead of thinking unproductive thoughts that drive negative emotions? You might think it’s thinking of productive thoughts that drive positive emotions.
But not necessarily.
The emotions you need to reach your goals do not necessarily require you to move from demotivated and scared to motivated and confident.
Those are great emotions, but honestly, I think they’re small potatoes to the emotion I’m recommending you focus on. And I’ll bet you’ll never guess.
In this episode I’m going to give you my favourite emotion for helping get maximum traction in your career success and give you my mathematical equation to help get there.
One of the big mindset challenges that I’ve been meaning to talk about, and comes up all the time is something I call SUCCESS INTOLERANCE.
This is a term I made up. You probably know it as Self-Sabotage. But I like success intolerance because it more perfectly describes what is actually happening in your brain.
Self-sabotage is the action that you take. But success intolerance is what happens in your brain that drives the actions that you would consider as self-sabotage. So success intolerance is more causal. And self-sabotage is the symptom of success intolerance.
Success Intolerance is when your brain tries to avoid the discomfort of going after the success you want by feeding you unproductive thoughts that stop you from taking the action necessary to achieve growth.
In this episode we’ll define success intolerance, share how to recognize it at work and ultimately deal with it.Check out the links and shownotes at thecareerreset.com/49
In this episode, we’re talking about something I call drama dependency. I made up this terminology, but it’s based on real cognitive-behavioural principles.
I love the way it sounds … drama dependency… it sounds so dramatic just saying it. So meta. That’s why it’s so perfect.
It’s exactly as it sounds - we get dependent on our own drama. We get unconsciously dependent on something at work being a problem so that we can avoid a bigger problem (usually of our own making).
And you know this is a real thing because you know those people who are like that. Everything is an issue. Nothing can be solved. Or they’ve been complaining about the same thing for years and don’t do anything about it.
You probably have someone like that on your team. We totally notice it in other people… but as always, you completely miss when you’re doing it.
So let’s explore if you are creating and depending on your own drama. We’re going to talk about why we get drama dependent, how to recognize the signs, and how to start practicing being drama free.
This episode is for both the perfectionists who know they’re perfectionists and the folks who don’t know they’re perfectionists.
So it’s basically for all human beings. Because perfectionism shows up in so many ways. This isn’t just for those people who try to make their work perfect or get upset when there’s a hair out of place. It’s for anyone who’s has a goal that they just can’t seem to achieve. It’s for anyone who let’s fear of failure stop them from taking action.
If that’s you, you may be dealing with the perfectionist myth without even knowing about it, and it could be getting in the way of your career potential.
Did you know there was a difference between confidence and self-confidence? Probably not. I didn’t for years. I used the terms interchangeably and just decided that I didn’t have enough of either.
Sound familiar?
And even if there is a difference, is it even worth noticing. Um… ya.
For a couple reasons.
First of all. Self-Confidence is the key to growth. If you want to do things you’ve never done before and achieve things you’ve never achieved before, understanding how to generate self-confidence will be a valuable tool.
Second. You’re going to realize you’re more confident than you give yourself credit for. And that’s a game-changer too. Because even though confidence may not be a growth emotion (yes, you read that right), it’s still something that creates a lot of positive energy so you can do your best work.
We’re also going to cover how self-confidence turns into arrogance. Spoiler alert - it doesn’t.
Truly self-confident people are never arrogant. But we will be talking about what creates arrogance and what it looks like (just in case you’re doing it without knowing you are).
And finally, for those drivers out there who want to work on their self-confidence, I’ll share three indicators of self-confidence that you can practice to dial up your speed of success.
Imposter syndrome is a lie.
I’m not trying to say you’re not suffering from it.
All I’m saying is your brain is serving up a lie that you’re believing, and thus creating a bunch of optional drama that doesn’t need to be there.
Whaaa?
Most people “suffer” from Imposter Syndrome in their career, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
In this episode I’m going to show you why Imposter Syndrome doesn’t have to be a problem at all. In fact, it could just be a sign that your brain is working perfectly.
I’ll show you how you can reposition Imposter Syndrome as a sign of your success. No more suffering. No more thinking something is wrong with you.
Only signs that we are on the right track.
Here’s to Imposter Syndrome being a sign of success!
What is serious goal setting in the context of your career? How often do you do it?
Most people don’t. They have what I would call a “regular goal”. It’s more like a dream; “I want to be (this title)”, or “I want to make (this much money)”, or “I’d like to work abroad one day”.
And that’s as far as they go. And if the dream becomes a reality, it’s mostly luck. Or it takes way longer than it needs to. You’re leaving your success on the table.
Serious goal setting is about taking your goals seriously.
In this episode, I’m talking about what you can do to take your goal way more seriously and make it happen faster. We cover the three steps to setting a serious goal.

Who struggles with self-confidence? I do. And so do most people I know. We focus on what’s missing in our performance. In our abilities. And in ourselves.
That’s because our brain is wired to focus on what’s missing. It’s a primitive instinct that alerts us to possible danger.
It was useful back in the day.
But in today’s world, it’s simply an instinct that makes us focus on why we’re not worthy and eats away at our self-confidence.
For most of my life, I have operated this way. I’ve looked for what’s missing in my abilities.
I told myself that focusing on ‘what’s missing’ and where I could be better, smarter, faster, stronger, thinner, etc, etc., was what was pushing me forward.
But that is a thought error.
Focusing on what’s missing in my performance is not a driver of achievements. It’s an inhibitor.
If you want to achieve great things, you must believe in yourself ahead of time.
But how?
How do you believe in your ability to do something if you’ve never done it before?
One way is to create a track record of achievements. Demonstrate to yourself how far you’ve come, and your ability to go further. To achieve great things.
In this episode, I’ll share how to create a track record of achievements that can help build your self-confidence and train your brain to always focus on what’s working.
How do you get your resume noticed?
What do people look for when you’re writing a resume?
Wouldn’t it be great if you knew all the boxes you needed to tick?
Well, this is the episode for you my friends. We have an expert in the field to share her perspective.
Sarah Wing Lima has 20 years of experience in Talent Acquisition. That’s what she does. So many people jump around to various specialties within the HR. But not Sarah. She’s 100% about Talent Acquisition.
And she has seen it all! Sarah has worked in the private and public sectors and is currently the Director of Talent Acquisition at The University of Guelph.
In this episode, we cover the mindset of the person looking at the resume. What do you need to do to get your resume noticed? We talk about how to focus your content, what to put in the cover letter and the biggest mistakes to avoid.
Plus a share a few of my personal pet peeves and what would make me immediately put a resume on the NO pile.
If you’re just starting to think about maybe writing or updating your resume, this episode is the perfect place to start.

I want to introduce you to Momo Bertrand. Momo is the Digital Marketing Officer at the UN.
That’s pretty impressive. But that is not nearly the most impressive thing about Momo Bertrand.
Momo is not afraid to go after what he wants.
Scratch that.
He is afraid. But he does it anyway.
He stays focused on the things he can control and keeps taking massive action.
He started his career in Cameroon, West Africa. He kept applying for a scholarship to do his masters at the University of San Diego until he got it. Got clear on what he wanted to do. And then applied for over 500 jobs until he got one.
His story is also impressive. But that’s STILL not the most impressive thing about Momo Bertrand.
The most impressive thing about Momo is his energy.
He wows me every time I hear his voice.

Today I want to talk about my unintentional, yet racist behaviour. I want to have a conversation with you about it in the hopes that something I share about myself my inspire you or help you deal with the current conversation.
And the current conversation is around systemic racism. It was sparked by the murder of a black man at the hands of people in power. And that’s not ok.
And it’s also raised other issues that are not ok. Like the way white people, including myself, have continuously turned a blind eye to what’s happening around us.
In today’s episode, I want to be open and vulnerable about what I’ve learned about my own racist behaviour. I’ll talk about how I opened my eyes to it, how I will continue to learn, and what I’ve started doing about it.
This is not an episode about career. It’s more of an episode about relationships. The relationship we have with ourselves, and with our fellow human beings.
I want to be part of a solution. And the way I can do that is sharing what I’ve learned about myself so far.
I welcome your comments and ideas at thecareerreset.com/36. Let’s continue the conversation.
Your boss has no power over you. It’s true. They have some authority. They get to make decisions. They hand out assignments. The filter through the objectives of the organization and make sure the team delivers.
That THEIR job. They are also often expected to contribute to the growth of their people.
But despite all of that. Your boss has no power over you. They don’t control how you think. They don’t control how you feel. And they certainly don’t control how you show up.
Don’t believe me? That’s OK. I’m not sure I would believe me either when I was in your shoes.
But what if I’m right? What would that change for you?
In this week’s episode, I’m going to prove to you that your boss has no power over you. And I’m going to show you how to take your power back.
Once you have this superpower, it’s gonna change everything!
The minute we get a boss, we think that it’s their job to have all the answers and never, ever make a mistake. And when they do make a mistake, we think it automatically means they’re a bad boss. Or at least, not a good one.
But the truth is, your boss is a human being just like you. And a lot of the time, the reason you having a difficult experience dealing with your boss is because of some thought errors or false expectations you have about your boss.
In this episode, I’m talking about how being a boss doesn’t automatically mean your boss knows how to be a good leader. We’ll talk about why that is, and how you can leverage that knowledge to improve the experience you’re having with your boss.
This is one of 5 insights I share in the FREE Masterclass | Turn Your Bad Boss Into Your Best Boss. You can sign up for that class here.
We have beliefs about making money that hold us back. These beliefs actually block us from making all the money we could.
It feels like money has all this power.
But the truth is money has no power at all. The only thing that has power is how you think about money. And your ability for making money is directly aligned with your thoughts and your relationship with money.
In this episode about making money, we put the power of money in perspective and review the top three beliefs about money that hold people back from having more of it.

People want to have fun at work, but then don’t show up with a fun attitude. And now that work has moved to video conferencing (at least for now), I’m hearing people complain more and more about how disengaged they feel.
In this episode, we talk about the importance of fun at work, and how to create it in a sustainable way that inspires you to achieve your goals. We’ll talk about who’s responsible for the fun and why ‘scheduled fun’ just doesn’t work.
This pandemic has put a spotlight on many opportunities to fix problems and improve processes across many industries and services
One thing that I’ve noticed is that people had a rough time dealing with the ongoing changing circumstances. People got stressed out, depressed, over-ate, over- drank, over-Netlfixed, among other things. They got angry and scared.
And then some people totally rose to the occasion.
The difference in how people are handling this crisis based on how they are thinking. The reason we do anything is because of what we think about it.
And that’s why this episode is all about how true performance improvement is based on our ability to manage our thinking. It’s about using the health of your mind to be actively aware of how your thinking is creating your emotions and behaviours in order to drive your results.
Behavioural management is a by-product of thought management.
Teaching ourselves and our employees to improve their performance by being aware of their thinking is the future of performance development.
If you want to change your results, you must learn to actively change your mind.

I’m ready to get on with it. If you’re like me and you’re getting a little bit of #covid19 fatigue, and you’re ready to move forward, then this episode is for you
Yes, we are still in the middle of it. And there are still a lot of precautions we’re all taking and new circumstances every day. But that doesn’t mean life has to stop. It just means we need to adapt.
And so in this episode, I want to offer you three empowering questions you can ask yourself all day, every day to keep you focused on moving forward.
This is the easiest way to start taking control of your life. The brain loves answering questions, and I’ve got some simple ones that are guaranteed to create the momentum you need to start thriving in this new normal.

Are you eating more, shopping more and Netflixing more than usual right now? The changes to our lives that are in response to the Coronavirus are coming fast and furious.
And we are not in control of most of them.
But why do I all of a sudden feel a desperate urge for bread and Cadbury Easter Eggs. And why do I feel a compulsion to stop working and re-watch Schitt’s Creek?
Do you know why you’re doing that?
Many of you are going to say it’s because of Coronavirus, but it’s not because of Coronavirus at all.
The good news is, the reason you’re eating, shopping and Netflixing more than normal right now is actually because of something that’s 100% in your control.
In this episode, I want to introduce you to the concept of buffering. Buffering is when you try to avoid one emotion by temporarily replacing it with another.
And it can happen when you feel scared or uncertain because of your thoughts about something like Coronavirus.
It can happen when you feel stressed about what you think about a situation with your boss
It can happen when you feel overwhelmed by what you think about a project you’re working on.
And it can even happen when you’re frustrated because you think you can never get Zoom to work properly.
So if this is you and you tend to buffer away your painful emotions you want to avoid the ‘Quarantine 15’, or the credit card bill that’s full of Amazon purchases, then you need this episode.
We will cover how to recognize the signs of buffering
How to let yourself feel the negative emotions without the need to buffer them
And what you can do instead of buffering to help you effectively manage your painful emotions.

The world would be such a better place if everyone would just let me control them.
Sadly, things don’t work that way.
We can’t control what other people do.
It never works out.
Yet, we all continue to spend an inordinate amount of time and energy trying to control other people’s bad decisions. And then when it doesn’t work, we all get mad and frustrated.
The first thing to understand is the decision itself is not good or bad. It’s your opinion on the decisions of others that make them good or bad decisions.
And in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, we all have a lot of opinions on how people should be living their lives. As if it wasn’t uncomfortable enough to deal with all these new COVID-19 circumstances, we’ve chosen to add additional anger and frustration to our plates.
There are people out there not heeding the warnings from our officials. They are acting as if they are above the virus. They are putting everyone’s lives at risk whether they choose to believe that or not
So what do you do about it?
In this week’s episode, I’m going to offer you three concepts to help you handle other people’s bad decisions.
And these concepts not only apply to the perceived life-threatening behaviours of people on the street. But also to your everyday life dealing with the bad decisions people make at work all the time.
If you’re feeling at all frustrated and in need of controlling a situation that’s out of your control, then this is the episode for you.

How are you doing with leading change with your team?
Life and work have changed for so many people in the last two weeks.
This is the first pandemic of it’s kind in my lifetime. I remember bird flu, SARS and mad cow disease, but the changes to our lives was nowhere near the scale that we’re facing today.
In many ways, we’re more ready for it now than ever given how much technology allows us to be connected from anywhere.
And in many ways, we are nowhere near ready enough.
But change is change. Regardless of what’s causing it.
And we humans aren’t great at dealing with it.
So this episode is all about what you can do to help you and your team manage the ongoing waves of COVID-19 change with the minimum of stress.

There is so much change and uncertainty going on right now. And so if you're feeling unsettled or discouraged, or worse, in a panic-state, I wanted to offer you this podcast episode as a way to share ideas that can help you regroup and reset your mind.
COVID-19 is a circumstance that has come into our lives. And every day, there are more circumstances and changes that we are facing.
Our challenge in this time is to manage ourselves and our minds to show up as the best version of ourselves and move forward. We owe that to ourselves and the people who count on us.
I hope this episode helps you

This week we’re talking about Managing Working Relationships

Introducing Career Lessons Learned. In honour of our 25th episode, I’m introducing a new themed episode into the podcast mix. From time to time, we will be inviting guests on the show to talk about their own career lessons learned.
We are going to start sharing interviews with people who have found themselves stuck in a tough career situation, and share how they turned themselves around. We want to hear not only about how they found themselves in this situation, but also the career lessons they learned throughout their journey to resetting their careers.
In this episode, we talk to Geist Ussery who is a chef and event director in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Geist’s journey is about how he made a career decision out of desperation that made his situation even worse.
Geist’s story is like so many others. He took an easy way out without thinking things through, and it took concerns with his health, his friends and taking accountability for his life before he was able to turn his situation around.
Join me in hearing Geist’s fascinating story of his lessons learned and the little man with the ‘neckerchief’ that turned everything around for him.

Introducing two truths and a lie about your career!
This week’s episode is for anyone who feels a little stuck in their career and is not quite sure what to do about it.
What you won’t learn in this episode is a bunch of steps to getting ‘unstuck’. What you will learn are some mindset shifts you need to make to get out of your own way.
That’s really where the good stuff is anyway.
‘Cos let’s be honest. A lot of the reason we’re stuck is that we’re stopping ourselves from moving forward.
We get caught up in our stories, and we hold back our own success and our own potential. We get mired in thoughts and beliefs that aren’t serving anyone… least of all us and our careers.
So let’s lighten things up a bit and play two truths and a lie about your career.
Check out the show notes @ thecareerreset.com/24
P.S. While two truths and a lie is typically known as a drinking game, it’s probably better to stay sober for this one.
What do you need to consider when you hire a career coach? Why and when do you hire a career coach?
It used to be that people would hire a career coach when there was a ‘problem’. When they were stuck, or in a panic, or facing a really tough situation. That’s when people think it’s time to hire a career coach.
Maybe you’ve lost your job. Maybe you hate your job. Maybe you’re having a hard time with people you work with. Maybe you have a chronic performance or leadership issue that’s getting in your way and you’ve realized it’s time to do something about it.
All of these are good reasons.
A lot of people wait to hire a career coach because of the expense. Let’s be honest, private coaching is a luxury and the situation better be pretty serious if you’re going to shell out that kind of money, right?
Sure, I get that.
But these days, you can hire a career coach without going all the way to private sessions. There are programs and memberships and group coaching and a lot of other tools that make it more accessible to have a coaching partner as part of your ongoing team.
The question is, how do you find the right solution for you? How do you even start finding a career coach that aligns with who you are and your career goals?
In this episode, I’m talking to Ann Sutton. She’s a fellow career coach and we discuss why you might need a career coach, what to expect in a career coaching relationship, how to find the right career coach for you and the different modalities of career coaching available to you.
It’s everything you need to know to confidently find and hire a career coach that’s dedicated to helping you create the career you want
It’s hard to set boundaries.
Or at least that’s the story I often tell myself. And a lot of people feel the same way. But it’s probably because of the way that a lot of people approach setting boundaries that makes it difficult.
A lot of people are either afraid to set boundaries because they don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings or risk annoying people. Sometimes people set boundaries in a way that comes from frustration, which may not get you the result you’re looking for.
Or sometimes people set boundaries in a way that tries to control other people, whether they know it or not.
So today, I want to talk a bit about what boundaries actually are, and then share some ways to effectively set boundaries at work that work
Many people think that boundaries are about what YOU ask OTHER PEOPLE to do or not do. Right? It’s about controlling other people’s behaviour.
But that’s not a boundary at all.
Boundaries are about how YOU will behave when a situation arises
In this episode, I talk about what work boundaries really are, five tips on setting them effectively so they work every time, and give lots of examples of how to do it effectively.

A Personal Brand Strategy is a must for anyone who takes their career seriously.
I love the quote from Jeff Bezos that says "Your brand is what people say about you when you leave the room."
Now if you’ve listened to any of my podcasts or content, you know that I am always saying that you can’t control what other people think. But you can control how you show up.
You can control the information YOU put out in the world about you.
To help me have this conversation, I’ve invited a branding expert; Julie Hamilton. She has 20+ years of branding experience, and she’s someone I worked with at McDonald’s.
Julie has her own Branding Agency called INTENTION where she works with corporate brands to help them get crystal clear about what their brand stands for and how to communicate that brand story in a consistent way.
Yes. Companies pay huge bucks to Agencies to help them do this. Why? Because it’s important. People buy from brands they connect with and trust for a consistent experience.
It’s the same for you. You have a personal brand whether you’re focused on it or not. Everything you do or don’t do sends a message and leaves a mark about what it’s like to work with you.
So it makes sense that if you want to accelerate your growth and build a strong reputation about WHAT and HOW you deliver, it’s time to get purposeful about the brand you're building.
In this episode, Julie and I are going to apply the principles of Corporate Branding to your Personal Brand Strategy.
Julie and I talk about why personal brand strategies are important, what can happen if you don’t have one, how to lean into yours and the five questions to ask yourself to start building your personal brand strategy.

Think about your development plan for 2020. I bet it’s full of new goals you want to achieve that require you to create new habits for yourself. And I bet you have a plan of action to make it happen.
And I meant that literally. You have a plan of technical actions you want to take to achieve those goals.
But the likelihood that you will experience sustained success at achieving these goals or creating new habits is low because you’re only focused on the HOW. You’re not exploring the WHY and the WHAT.
Why do you have a certain behaviour? What thoughts and feelings are causing this behaviour? And what would you like to think and feel instead to generate a more desired behaviour?
In this episode, I’ll share how to create new habits that stick by giving you a simple model that shows you how to easily change your behaviours for the long term.
I’ll share how I applied this model to my recent Ted Talk, and also to my weight loss goals for 2020. And we’ll talk about how you can apply this model to your career development plan… or any other goals or new habits that you want to achieve!
How do you find remote work? Or how do you make your existing job remote?
Have you ever sat in your cubicle and asked yourself that question? Or sat in your car stopped in traffic and wondering if you really need to go into the office? With technology today, it’s easier and easier to work remotely. And there are a lot more jobs out there that allow for remote work.
If remote work is something that you’ve always wondered about, then this episode is for you. My guest this week is Camille Attell who specializes in helping people understand why and how they want to fit remote work into their life. She helps them define how they can repurpose the skills they have, and then helps coaches them on finding the remote work.
But that wasn’t where Camille started. Camille is someone who worked in a corporate gig, just like so many of us. And also like so many of us, she and her husband woke up one day and said ‘why are we doing this?’ and ‘do we want to keep doing this for another 20 years??’
This was the struggle that I had when I decided to leave the Corporate life, and I know it’s the struggle that so many of you out there are having too.
I learned a lot from her in this episode and you will too. We talk about what to expect from remote work, how to transition your current job to remote work, how to avoid being scammed and how to find remote work WITHOUT taking a pay cut.
Camille and I both share our experience with remote work. So if you are someone who is truly interested in understanding if remote work is right for you, then this podcast will get you started.

Is a bad boss making your job a misery? As the saying goes, people don’t quit a job, they quit a boss. According to Gallup, 75% of the reasons people quit come down to their managers
So if you have a bad boss, you would not be alone in thinking your only option was to find another job.
But the truth is, of those 75% of people, many of them left because they weren’t capable of handling the situation. So they ran away from it.
I did the same thing.
But there is another way. There is a more effective way to manage a bad boss, and not let it get in the way of a job you (otherwise) love
Learning to deal with a bad boss is a SUPERPOWER everyone needs
So in this episode, I’m going to share my story of how I blew it with my bad boss. AND I’m going to give you examples and ideas around three strategies you can use to leverage your bad boss situation.
PLUS I have a FREE Workbook for you to start to work out your own bad boss strategy. It’s called the Must-Have Guide for Dealing with a Difficult Boss, and you can get it by going to thecareerreset.com/17
The question I often get asked is ‘can I just quit my job if I hate it? What should I do?’. When you’re not happy at work, it’s tough for anyone to get a clear perspective on the best way to answer that question.
So let's get rid of the emotion and get a bit pragmatic about it. Let’s weigh what goes into the decision. And then decide WHEN it’s the right time for you. And HOW to go about it. Here’s what we’re covering in this episode;
Plus, I have a great FREE tool to help you weed through all the thoughts, feelings and frustrations going through your head. Using the information in this podcast, you'll be able to easily get clear on what’s really not working for you, and what your ideal situation looks like.
And you can get access that information (and a few other FREE tools) in the show notes @ thecareerreset.com/16
Everything is easier when you have help from someone else. Especially if that someone knows what they’re doing. I don’t know about you, but I’m always asking for help with things I don’t know how to do.
Just last week, I learned how to use my flat iron on my bangs without them looking weird. If you’ve ever tried it, you know what I’m talking about. (P.S. the answer is unplug the iron and then let it cool for a minute or two first).
So what about your career?
Careers are definitely more complicated than using a flat iron, yet a lot of people try and go it alone.
I recommend getting a Mentor.
And I know that sounds like a great idea. But what do you really use a mentor for? Where do you find a mentor? And how do you manage a mentor relationship?
Excellent questions. This week’s episode of The Career Reset Podcast is dedicated to helping you find and manage your mentor relationships.
And as part of the toolbox in this episode, I’ve got a brand new tool called; How to be a Marvellous Mentee. I know. It’s a cheese-ball name. But the information is invaluable if you want to make the most of your mentor relationship.
And you can get that FREE GUIDE in the show notes @ thecareerreset.com/15
Leadership Development is the Key to Opportunity and I feel that my guest today embodied this concept throughout her entire career. And she didn't do it in the "traditional way" either.
Sharon Ramalho, former CPO at McDonald's Canada, was inspiring to listen to and learn how she developed in her career.Sharon has been so successful in her career, that she retired early at age 50, but returned to the workforce, with her own business, in order to train and develop other great leaders.

Her main purpose is creating the conditions for people to be at their best at work. And she has really upgraded the approach at the U of G.
Linda has her Masters in Human Systems Intervention. She’s a certified coach. She has advanced certification in conflict management and mediation, strength deployment, leadership effectiveness, and a trained facilitator.
In this episode, Linda discusses how reframing the whole Performance Development process between managers and employees can have a positive effect on everyone. A simple change in name, calling them Performance Success Framework, Linda found has changed the outcome for both managers and employees.
The end of the year performance reviews, are called Performance Summaries, as these should just be a summary of what you've talked about throughout the year.

Giving feedback isn't just a one-sided conversation. If you decide to give someone feedback, you have to be all in. Willing to offer solutions, but also willing to listen to the other person's response.
In today's episode: How to Effectively Grow Your People Through Feedback, I also discuss the importance of mindset, as I always say, success is 80% mindset.
What you think comes out in your actions, words, and demeanor which is very important to remember when giving feedback. If your words say one thing, but your body language another, it sends mixed messages and your feedback isn't received well, if at all.
Head over to the show notes for my FREE guide The 5 Simple Steps to Giving Feedback That Creates Results.
Have you ever created a vision board?
In today's episode with Tracy Roesch Williams, we go much deeper into how creating a Vision Map sets you up for success. Hint: it's not just about cutting photos and sticking them onto your wall.
Tracy is a woman with a vision. She has reinvented her career over and over again. And in each iteration, she’s always focused on creating a vision for what she wanted and then bringing that vision to life.
If you've been wondering how this 'vision thing' has worked for others, but hasn't worked for you, listen to today's episode. It might be as simple as your vision isn't aligned with you and your future.
