Is it still hunting (as opposed to shooting) if you use a drone to find game? Is it ethical? Is it legal? (The answer to that last, at least in New Hampshire, is no.) This is the topic of conversation in this mini episode, filmed on location, between Ed and Max, with Brian returning to the podcast to lend his thoughts as well. (We were in Brian's workshop filming a video for the YouTube channel.) April is here and that means salmon season. Max and Ed talk about the opening day on Lake Winnipesaukee. Another topic is the abundance of coyotes and a horrifying experience an acquaintance of Ed’s went through involving coyotes and her dog. By the way, do you say “Kai-Yo-Tee” or “Kai-Oat”? Let us know in the comments.

Ed also explains how modern tree stands came out about, and Max shows his new Spyderco Tenacious, which forces him to admit something about the Spyderco that Ed gave him a few years back.

Finally, Ed and Max talk about literature, because that’s the woodsman’s way. Thanks for listening.

Our good friend Brian is the guest on this episode of The Woodsman’s Podcast. Viewers of the YouTube channel will recognize him from numerous videos, and also the intro to most videos shows him planing an ash log to make a long bow. Brian has spent a lifetime learning his craft and can carve wood, stone, ivory, bone, antler, ice, and pretty much everything else.

It’s the first podcast of 2019 and Ed’s focused on ice fishing, even though the ice on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee isn’t quite thick enough yet to be out on, especially not with any equipment. Still some of the smaller lakes are solid enough and plenty of fishermen are out there. Max has an update on oak trees to follow up on last month’s discussion of the lack of acorns (a major foor source for deer) in the woods this year and why that is.

What fish are native or indigenous to New Hampshire? Specifically, Lake Winnipesaukee. Well, it’s your lucky day because Ed (the Working Class Woodsman on YouTube) has the answers. He also lets Max know about the deal with the eel, particularly American Eels that make their way from Lake Winnipesaukee to the Atlantic Ocean and into the Sea of Sargasso in order to breed. This fresh water to salt water voyage makes them catadromous fish, the opposite of, for instance, salmon, which go from salt water to fresh water to spawn, and are therefore anadromous. Also why are cusk called lawyer fish?

Thanks for watching. We did have some problems recording this. Max accidentally dialed 911 from the lockscreen of his iPhone and then we also ran out of space on the memory card of Max’s camera.

In episode 2 of the Woodsman’s Podcast, Max and Ed discuss the 2018 Sportsman’s Opinion Poll in the June edition of the Maine Sportsman. Questions range from “Did you hunt with a crossbow in the past year,” to “Do you believe global warming is a real environmental threat” to “should the state end the recreational trapping of bears?”

We got through only half of the questions in this episode, so let us know in the comments (https://youtu.be/1ZsovZBrk8c) if you’d like to hear us discuss the remaining 20 or so questions next month. We will also be talking about kayak fishing next month and about picking wild berries.

To answer a question we didn’t know the answer to in the podcast, there are 43 game wardens in New Hampshire and 125 in Maine (according to the respective state websites).
