The Revelation Station: Recent Episodes

Gary & Simon

Genesis released their first single 50 years ago! 50 years! So to celebrate Simon made his friend Gary listen to all the Genesis albums in order and then review them in the local pub, commonly known as The Revelation Station. What will Gary think? Will they stay friends? Is the beer here any good? The answer to these questions will probably be revealed.

Welcome back to The Revelation Station Jukebox!
In this episode I’ll be having a listen to a cover of The Beatles classic Golden Slumbers…(and the rest) which is taken from the classic early 90’s documentary “Pumpin Iron” narrated by the actor Phil Collins.
The film was a smash hit, and followed a series of bodybuilders as they aimed to become Mr Universe. As well as the narration, Phil also provided this song which played out over the closing credits. I won’t spoil the ending of the film for you but needless to say it was a nail-biting final act!

Greeting Stationeers!
Welcome back to the Jukebox. In this episode I’ll be listening to a cover of King Crimson singer Elton John’s 1970 hit single Burn Down The Mission.
You probably know that Elton John joined Crimson for their second album In The Wake Of Poseidon, following the departure of Greg Lake. His songwriting skills, coupled with the genius of guitarists Robert Fripp and later Steven Hackett, propelled Crimson into the all conquering stadium act they became. When they split in 1980 Elton went on to even greater solo succes, until finally retiring in 2023 following the conclusion of his “Return to Tumbleweed” tour.
Burn Down The Mission became a much loved Crimson live song, appearing on the “Live Songs In Aspic” double album in 1977. This cover is taken from the Elton John biopic “In The Wake of Elton” released on 1991, performed by actor Phil Collins as part of his starring role as Elton himself. Sadly, the film was a flop so you’ve probably not heard this version.

Hello again Stationeers!
Welcome to another Jukebox episode. In this episode I’ll be having a listen to the song True Colours, by the female singer who took on the biggest shoes in the prog business - replacing Ray Wilson as the lead singer of Genesis in 2008!
Before that she was quite well known as a solo artist and this song was her second USA number one, way back in 1986.
I’ll also be digging into a little known cover version by the actor Phil Collins, taken from the soundtrack to “Brinks” in which he plays Anthony Black, the inside man for the Brinks Mat Robbery. I’m sure you’ve seen it, it won an Oscar and everything.

Hello there Stationeers!
Welcome back to another track from The Revelation Station Jukebox. This one came in just under the wire for Patrons, celebrating Ray Wilson’s birth month of September. For everyone else (that’s you) it’s just after. What can I say? You should deffo subscribe.
Anyway, celebrating Ray Wilson on the eve of Genesis releasing their 25th album, Stuttering Stars, which of course is their 11th to feature the Scots singer. For this episode I thought I’d go back to Ray’s beginnings, before he took Genesis on to even greater success than they managed with previous singers Phil Colling and Peter Habriel. It seems like only last year that the band won an Oscar for “Best Biopic” for the movie about the making of Calling All Stations. Who can forget Liam Neeson’s incredible turn as Ray, or Tom Hanks as Tony Banks?
But I digress. Enjoy this peek into the early years, with the Guaranteed Pure song “Swing Your Bag”.

Well hello there Stationeers, this is a lovely surprise, come in come in.
I’ve just got a new Jukebox episode all ready for you, a bit of a rare one this time. I’ll be listening to the debut single by actor turned singer Phil Collins, In The Air Of The Night. This is a little song about how a man was drowning and another man could have helped but didn’t. So the story goes, Phil saw it all and then later at a concert he found him! Can you believe that?
Anyway, I’ve never heard this song, it wasn’t very popular back in the day, although Phil did release a few more records he never sold much and soon went back to his movie career. A shame as this song shows some real potential.
Anyway, that’s enough from me, have a listen to the episode and see what you think of this obscure gem.

Hello again Stationeers!
Do you dream of your love from afar? Sigh… me too.

Hello Stationeers and welcome to this short minisode!
It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these, about 2 years in fact, so here we are once more…
As you may know Mike+The Mechanics are currently on their Refuelled tour in the UK and Gary and I were able to bag tickets to the Nottingham show on May 8th 2023.
So presented here are our post-gig thoughts on the show. It was recorded in my car afterwards, so apologies for the sometimes dodgy sound quality.
We’ll be back soon with another episode, and I hope to have another short review for you in a week or so.

BBC Broadcasts: a special episode
by SIMON HELDREICH
Genesis have had a long and fruitful
relationship with the BBC, having
recorded numerous sessions both live
and in the studio, and their music has
been featured on many BBC radio and
television programs. Some of the band's
most notable BBC broadcasts include
their 1972 performance at the Paris Studios,
their 1980 performance at the Lyceum Theatre
and their 1987 performance at Wembley Stadium.
Genesis' BBC broadcasts have been a valuable source of material for fans of the band. They
provide a unique insight into the band's early
years and their live performances. They are
also a testament to the band's enduring popularity.
Now some of those iconic performances have
been released in a 5 CD, or 3 Vinyl LP, boxset.
Join Simon in this special episode, as he gives
his verdict on the release. Is it worth getting
hold of? Or should you stick to bootlegs? And
just where exactly is Knebworth anyway?

The Poison Entrapment!

by GARY STARR

In 1985 Phil Collins was everywhere! Literally, everywhere. Fresh off the success of Against All Odds he released his third stu-stu-studio album in late January to a relatively positive response. It wouldn’t last, and the press and public would soon grow tired of Phil’s constant presence. However, for a short time Phil was on top. No Jacket Required became his biggest selling album and spawned three USA no.1 hits.

Meanwhile, Simon and Gary, with their guide Juan, find themselves exploring a mysterious cave below a volcano when an accident befalls one of the party. Who will survive the encounter and what will be left of them afterwards? Find out in this thrilling episode!

Greetings Stationeers and welcome to this special episode of The Revelation Station podcast.

Have you ever wanted to know what happened after Peter left Genesis in 1975, but before he released his first solo album in 1977? Well, you are in luck my friend because as a delightful bonus I’ve recorded this episode exploring exactly that period of time! What a coinkydink!

From Robert Fripp to Charlie Drake via Rolling Stones pastiche and Beatles covers, this special dives into the demos and unreleased tracks from that period. If you want to know what could have been this episode is for you!

Please note: Because the music audio comes from various sources the quality varies.

Hello listeners and thank you for your patience. This week we present our review of The Wicked Lady soundtrack by Tony Banks.

Released on 22nd July 1983, this film was directed by veteran British director Michael Winner, fresh off the success of Deathwish 2. In subject matter it’s something of a departure from that movie but it maintains the low class sleaze of the action shooter. Something of a remake of the 1945 film of the same name, it features some typical early 80’s nudity and sex, tied to a story that seems to be too long for it’s roughly 90 minute run time.

And who better to score a bawdy period drama than everyone’s favourite Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks? Technically, this is Tony’s second solo album, coming out in April 1983 (a full two months before The Fugitive). The original release featured his synthesiser demos on side a, with orchestral score versions on side b. The last of Tony’s albums to be released on CD, it wouldn’t get issued until 2013 (and then again in 2019 as part of the Banks Vault box set).

Anyway, we watched some of the film and then we reviewed the album. What did we think? What do I look like? An encyclopedia? Why not listen to the episode and then you’ll know. Sorry, sorry, I don’t mean to be tetchy. Watching a bad movie does that.

NEXT EPISODE: ??? This is the last episode of season 2. We’ll be back soon with more.

Thanks for listening. If you’ve enjoyed this podcast you can donate the price of a coffee to help run the website by clicking this link. All donations are gratefully received and give you access to 10 exclusive minisodes only available to people who donate.

And until May 24th 2021 listeners to the Revelation Station can get 3 months of Amazon Music Unlimited for free when they sign up using this link. For everyone who signs up Amazon will donate to the podcast. There are no losers here!

We apologise for the interruption to your scheduled programme…

Real life…uh…finds a way, as a famous man once said. In this case it finds a way to delay our planned review of Tony Banks The Wicked Lady soundtrack.

Instead we present this minisode, featuring some unused extracts from our interview with Adam Galloway conducted in February 2021. In the original episode we discussed Adam’s “Covering All Stations” project and we had a fun chat which I had to cut for timing reasons. Now Adam has released “We Can’t Cover” so I thought it would be a good time to put those edited parts to good use.

You can pre-save “We Can’t Cover” by clicking the picture (if you can see it) or this link.

So, Please Enjoy this minisode and come back soon for our review of The Wicked Lady.

Welcome back to The Revelation Station podcast, and we’re certainly grateful for this magnificent washout. Uh, turnout. And now I’d like to say a few words…

Hello, I Must Be Going was Phil Collins’ second solo album released on 5th November 1982. It featured the worldwide smash hit single You Can’t Hurry Love. Recorded during the 8 month break following Genesis’ hugely successful Abacab tour and released almost 2 years after Face Value, this album ditched the melancholy air of Phils’ debut to cover a whole gamut of other emotions. Phil once again bares his soul.

Written at the tail end of the divorce, Phil had met his second wife during this period, which lends a touch of optimism to some of the tracks. Phil also made a concious effort to distance this release from Face Value, by ditching the drum machine sound he pioneered and going for a more organic feel. Although most of the musicians on this album played on the previous release, the sound is often radically different.

BUT! What do our intrepid reviewers think of the album? Will it be a load of animal crackers or duck soup? Which track do Simon and Gary utterly utterly disagree on? Who does Simon describe as “just a drummer”? Which other prog rock legend has Simon been copying this week? Why are all these questions about Simon and not Gary? Find out in this weeks thrilling episode!

Welcome back Stationeers to the latest episode of The Revelation Podcast season 2! In our quest to listen to all of the solo albums by the “big 5” Genesis members we get to 1983. And that means Tony Banks’ second album The Fugitive.

Released in “late June” 1983, this hit the shops only a month after Genesis reconvened to work on their self-titled album. As such Tony engaged in very little promotion, with only one of the two single releases getting a promo video. Like Mike, Tony decided to handle the singing himself, was that a good decision? Find out by listening to the episode.

Back with the boys, what do Simon and Gary think of this one? Is this love at first listen? Will the wheels keep turning? Or is it a case of sometime never? And why, exactly did Tony end up naming the album after a popular TV series? Well, you can find out the answers to all these questions, and more, by listening to this episode.

Welcome back to The Revelation Station!
After some technical difficulties we have finally managed to record a new episode, you can hear all about that this week.

This time we are turning our attention to Mike Rutherford’s second, and final, solo album “Acting Very Strange” released on 7th September 1982. On this one Mike elected to do all the vocals himself, find out if that was a good call by listening to this episode.

Featuring no less than 4 singles, half the tracks on the actual album, it didn’t exactly set the charts alight. However, one particular track sowed the seeds for Mike and The Mechanics, listen in to find out which one.

Back to the boys, what do Gary and Simon think of the album? Will they get arrested? Is it an album to remember? Or will they be forced to hideaway? How did Mike meet up with Stewart Copeland? Find out the answers to all this and more by clicking play.

NEXT EPISODE: The Fugitive by Tony Banks.

Merry Christmas listeners!

In this festive episode we travel back to Christmas Eve 2019 for an untold story of The Revelation Station. As the snow falls, two weary travellers chance upon a mysterious house in the middle of nowhere, where they are forced to spend the night. Unlike any other Christmas tale, ghostly goings-on ensue in a story that is most definitely NOT ripped off from anything else you might have seen or read. No music review in this one dear listener, this is a bit of fun to keep you amused (hopefully).

Greetings Stationeers! Welcome to our final review podcast of 2020!

In this episode we will be having a listen to Peter Gabriel’s second solo album, released on 3rd June 1978. This marked a radical change of sound for Peter, who embraced the ethos of Punk and New Wave. He roped in prog rock legend Robert Fripp to produce the album and it was completed in record (geddit) time. This album sees Peter moving away from the proggy sounds of his previous release and closer to the global influences of albums to come. It also formed the first of a loose trilogy of Robert Fripp albums, along with Exposure, released in 1979 and Daryl Halls’ Sacred Songs, released in 1980.

But what do the boys from the Station think of it? Did Gary enjoy the final track on the album? Which song is Simon’s favourite? Did Robert Fripp do a good job of the production? Why did Peter play a punk cover of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” on his 1978 tour? Just exactly what does “Frippertronics” entail? FInd out the answers to these questions and more by clicking play.

NEXT EPISODE: We will return with more reviews in the New Year.

I hope you enjoyed Robert Fripp’s solo album…I mean Peter Gabriel’s second album. As a special thank you for listening here’s an offer. From one guitarist to another, in this week’s episode we are listening to the second album from Steve Hackett.

Please Don’t Touch (how many times have I heard that before?) was released in April 1978 on the Charisma label. It followed a period of time spent recording in America, and features some well known voices from across the pond. Without the restrictions placed on him by a band setting, Steve fully flexed his creative muscles to produce an album that is unlike his debut. Gone are the Genesis influences, with only Chester Thompson on drums, and in are the Rock sounds of Steve Walsh (of Kansas fame). It’s an eclectic mix, but does it work as an album?

That, dear listener, is the question facing our intrepid duo this week. Does the album suffer from sophomore slump? Whose vocal performance does Gary describe as “a tour de force”? Which song does Simon skip? You can find the answers to all these questions, and more, by clicking play and having a listen.

NEXT EPISODE: Peter Gabriel - 2 (or Scratch if you prefer)

I hope you enjoyed that trip into the mind of Steve Hackett, as a special thank you for listening here’s an offer. For a limited time you can get 3 months of Amazon Music Unlimited for absolutely FREE! (Terms and Conditions apply, £7.99 per month after free period for Prime members). Greetings listeners and welcome to our review of Anthony Phillips’ The Geese & the Ghost. This first solo album, by everyone’s second favourite Genesis guitarist, was released in March 1977 after a nearly 7 year gestation. Like Steve’s first solo effort, it features both Phil and Mike, as well as John Hackett on the flute.

This album shows Ant’s sensitive side, with pastoral songs about beautiful ladies, Henry V (or maybe VIII, who knows?), Geese flying west and err…(checks notes) chinese mushroom clouds. This album was not well received by the record company, but many fans see it as a continuation of the Genesis sound laid out on Trespass.

Cowering under the battlements as protection against the wind, Simon & Gary pick over the album that Allmusic would describe as “gorgeous, luscious, languid and utterly pointless” and “very arty in an early 70’s manner” in their review. Is that fair? You either already know what you think, or are eager to find out. Either way click play and discover what two tracks Simon thinks are great, what chart position it got to and what surprising track Gary says is the best on the album. This episode also features a rare abandoned BBC radion documentary on the making of the album. Presented here in three parts for the first time since, I don’t know, 1978 probably.

NEXT EPISODE: Please Don’t Touch by Steve Hackett

I hope you enjoyed that trip into the sensual world, as a special thank you for listening here’s an offer for you. For a limited time you can get 3 months of Amazon Music Unlimited for absolutely FREE! (Terms and Conditions apply, £7.99 per month after free period for Prime members). Hello, and welcome to Jazz Club. Nice. Tonight we feature Season Two of The Revelation Station Podcast, in which we explore the solo works of Genesis members past and present. Great.

In this episode we’re taking a long drag on the jazz-fusion doobie that is Brand X’s debut Unorthodox Behaviour, featuring cheeky chappie Phil Collins on drums. Wonderful.
Released in 1976, after a few years of tumult, this debut is technically Phil’s first venture into music outside of Genesis. He had been a busy session musician up to now, but this marks the first time he joined another band to write and record. It’s an interesting look at where his career could have gone. Marvelous.

Back in the present day, still separated by Lockdown restrictions, Simon & Gary discuss the merits of this sidestep away from Prog Rock. They ask some hard-hitting questions such as “Was jazz-fusion really that popular?”, “Are Brand X the Spinal Tap of jazz-fusion?”, “Is the title track aptly named?” and “What was Phil thinking?”. We also hear from our sponsors in the first episode to feature advert breaks. Really nice.

Next Episode: The Geese & The Ghost by Anthony Phillips

I hope you enjoyed that trip into the world of jazz-fusion, as a special thank you for listening here’s a special offer for all listeners of The Revelation Station. Once upon a time…

Two grown men, who really should know better, decided to start a podcast. They used to write together and hadn’t for a long time, and one of the men thought it would be a fun thing to do. The other went along with it for an easy life.

They started a podcast reviewing Genesis albums, at first they pretended to be in a pub (Oh, sorry SPOILERS) but gradually they started to flex their creative muscles and created more and more elaborate scenarios to put their “characters” through. After 30 episodes, and 2 years, they ended the story on an epic cliffhanger. They promised to continue the story.

Then a worldwide pandemic hit so they started doing weekly podcasts. Which brings us, eventually, to Episode 50. In this landmark episode we revisit the best of Genesis by selecting our 10 favourite tracks and saying why we like them. That’s it. As simple as that.

Oh, and we bring you the untold origin of our exclusive archive recordings in an all new adventure that we call “Deep Throat” (much to Simon’s discomfort). So sit back, relax with a delicious beverage and Please Enjoy!

Greetings listeners and welcome to the last, for now, weekly episode of The Revelation Station! This week we take a dive into the troubled waters of divorce in the company of Phil Collins. Here we have an album NOT based on a concept for a change, but that doesn’t mean that the songs contained here aren’t all of a similar theme.

Released in February 1981, almost exactly a year after Mike Rutherford’s debut solo effort, this shows a more reflective side to Phil who was writing the songs in the aftermath of his first divorce. Returning to the UK in mid 1979, Phil found Mike & Tony both in the middle of making their debuts, which meant he had plenty of free time to write and reflect. Roping in such world class musicians as Eric Clapton, L.Shankar and the Phenix Horns, Phil weaves an album of love and loss lead by the number 2 hit single “In The Air Tonight”.

But all of that doesn’t matter if it’s not very good does it? So what do Simon and Gary think of it? Well, SPOILER ALERT, they have almost directly opposing views on the album. Which song reflects Simon’s current real life? Which song stopped Gary from driving his car into a bollard? And what shocking bombshell do we end the episode on? Find out all this and more by clicking play on the episode below.

NEXT EPISODE: Will be our 50th episode. Join us soon for that one.

So thank you for reading this far. We appreciate your support. If you want to demonstrate that support in a monetary way you can do so by clicking on this link and contributing the price of a coffee to the running of the podcast. All donations will go towards the running cost of the website and recording equipment, not saving up in case I want to get a divorce one day.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends (“please God will it ever end”, I hear you cry. The answer is “No”). In this week’s fun filled episode we return from furlough and spend some time with Mike Rutherford as he experiences Smallcreep’s Day. Here’s the second solo to be based on a Science Fiction book, although this one only has a single sided concept.

Released in February 1980, only a month or so before Duke, this album finds Mike reunited with his Genesis compadre Ant Phillips to craft not only the story of Pinquean Smallcreep, but several stand alone tracks. Side One (or Two if you have the American release) tells Smallcreep’s tale acros 7 tracks, crucially changing the ending of the book to a more upbeat conclusion. Side Two features 5 tracks unrelated to each other and the story, which see Mike flexing his songwriting muscles.

On the factory floor, the grand parade of lifeless packaging (Gary) experiences this album for the very first time! Will he like it more or less than A Curious Feeling? Well, you know how to find out? That’s right, click the link and experience a rare archive recording of Mike and Ant in the studio, find out which 1980s artist stole Mike’s whole sound and gasp in wonder as an argument is averted before it even begins! Will wonders never cease?

NEXT EPISODE: Face Value by Phil Collins

So thank you for reading this far. We appreciate your support, even if you didn’t enjoy this album, by listening you’ve shown that you love us. If you want to prove how much, you can support us by clicking on this link and contributing the price of a coffee to the running of the podcast. All donations will go towards the running cost of the website and recording equipment. Mostly it goes on the website fees, it would be nice to have enough to stop Gary moaning, but every little helps (as Tesco say).

It’s the third week of our weekly Solo Genesis album reviews. Up this week is the first album by the man called “the only indispensible member of Genesis” (by none other than their manager) Tony Banks! The first of two solo albums based on Science Fiction novels (the other being Mike Rutherford’s Smallcreep’s Day), A Curious Feeling, has Tony exploring themes of self awareness and loss.

Released in October 1979, this album features Tony playing all the intruments bar drums, which are played by Genesis live man Chester Thompson, with vocals from Kim Beacon of String Driven Thing. Across 11 tracks, Tony weaves the story of a man who gains intelligence and love, only to lose everything. Like you do. Many Genesis fans consider this the peak of solo output, but was the critical mauling it got on release justified? You already know what you think, you’re only here to find out what we think. And that’s easy to fix, just click play.

Regaining their memories for the first time, Simon and Gary explore the soundscapes contained on this keyboard heavy debut. Sit back with a beer and listen with us as Gary experiences the album for the very first time. What impression will it make? Is this lost Genesis album as so many fans assert? What was it like at the very first public playback of the album? And how exactly did Tony come to record the album almost single handedly? All these questions and more will be answered in this thrilling episode. This episode is so thrilling you shouldn’t listen if you have a heart condition! Consider yourself warned.

NEXT EPISODE: Smallcreep’s Day by Mike Rutherford

In the second of our weekly look at the solo Genesis catalogue we turn our attentions to Peter Gabriel’s first solo album entitled…er…Peter Gabriel. Or Car if you prefer. Or even Peter Gabriel 1. Listen you need to decide for yourself because it’s only going to get more confusing when he releases more albums.

Anyway, released in 1977 this is the first of 4 self titled albums by the former Genesis frontman. It followed a period of activity which involved, amongst other things, a collaboration with comedian Charlie Drake. This is an album of varied sounds and styles recorded with a band of musicians who had never met Peter before. Some of them would go on to work with him for many years to come. It also features collaborations with Robert Fripp of King Crimson and uber-producer Bob Ezrin. And there are surprises! I mean, how many other prog rock stars would do a barbershop quartet on an album. Apart from Robert Fripp, yes. Name one more!

Back in the room, Simon and Gary discuss the album and it’s many twists and turns. What does Gary think Moribund The Burgermeister is about? What interpretation of Solsbury Hill does Simon reject completely? Is it possible that Gary could be wrong about one particular track on the album and how boring it is? Where will this album come on the “Solo Leaderboard”? And for the first time anywhere we present archive recordings of actual events that happened at the time. Don’t delay, listen now and find out.

NEXT EPISODE: A Curious Feeling by Tony Banks.

So thank you for reading this far. We appreciate your commitment. If you want to return that appreciation, you can support us by clicking on this link and contributing the price of a coffee to the running of the podcast. Welcome back to The Revelation Station! For the second season of the show we have decided to have a listen to some of the solo albums released by the band members. We’re going to do them in order of release, rather than each artist individually. That means the honour of the first episode goes to Mr Steve Hackett.

Released in 1975, Voyage of the Acolyte is the first of 25 albums by everyone’s favourite Genesis guitarist (sorry Ant but you know it’s true). Written across several years and recorded in the immediate aftermath of Peter quitting the band, this is often regarded as a lost Genesis record and with good reason. It features tracks that were rehearsed by the band for such classic albums as Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound. Which ones? Hey, I’m not telling you everything here! I need you to listen to the podcast, what am I? A transcript?

Gasp as Simon tells you which track was the first Steve Hackett song he heard! Chuckle as Gary gets things wrong! Shout as they inevitably dislike one of the tracks you really love! And as a bonus, this episode features a very rare, never heard before archive recording of Steve pitching the album to Tony Stratton Smith for the very first time. What will his reaction be? Listen to find out.

NEXT EPISODE: Peter Gabriel

Find out what Gary has been drinking this week! Gasp as Simon continually says “Brass and Wind Instruments” instead of “Brass and String” (and neither of them notice pfft). Marvel as Gary has to take Simon’s insults about his age because he can’t get to him!

Work, Lovelife, Miscellaneous is the name of the album and it’s a bit of a favourite around these here parts. Released in 1997, you probably haven’t heard it before and that’s your loss. Smoke me a kipper, if it isn’t another episode of Keep Talking from those chaps at The Revelation Station. In this week’s episode we take a trip three million years into the future and join the boys from the Dwarf in their latest adventure. Of course I’m talking about the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, and specifically the special “The Promised Land” recently broadcast on Dave.
Along the way we give you some background on the show in the first of our “pocket guides” and there may be one or two clips to keep you entertained. Find out how we first discovered the show, what our favourite episodes are AND Gary talks about meeting Grant Nayor (the shows creators) waaaaaaaay back in 1992.

But what if I don’t like Red Dwarf, you ask? Well, in that case I suggest that a) you’re wrong and should give it another chance OR b) just skip this episode, listening isn’t mandatory.

We aren’t covering albums in the same way as we have done in the past. Instead we’re going to discuss our week, what we’ve been listening too and watching. We’re going to make some recommendations and generally try to give you something to listen to if you’re stuck at home.

Surprise!

Genesis announced today (March 4th 2020 for those of you in the future) that they would be reforming for a tour in November and December.
Naturally, at least one of the boys was VERY excited. The other is mildly indifferent but, nevertheless, was pursuaded (with Beer) to record a short-ish episode discussing the news.
And here it is for you to enjoy.

So…if you’ve read this far you probably enjoy listening. If you do please consider supporting us by clicking on this link and contributing the price of a coffee to the running of the podcast. And so it ends…not with a bang. But a podcast…

Okay so I lied, we’ve got one more episode to spoil you with. 2 years ago we started this podcast with a listen to From Genesis To Revelations. 24 months and 31 episodes later we come to an end.

In this very special episode, find out what it’s meant to us to produce this show. We answer listener questions and discuss the future & past. Which songs are our least and most favourite? Why did Gary agree to get involved when he didn’t really know Genesis or listen to podcasts? Which band would Simon like to cover next? What’s Gary’s dog called? What’s Simon's favourite colour?

Find out the answers to these and many more questions today. And if you’re some sort of masochist, you could watch an unedited version of the conversation on the You Tubes right here.

To everyone who has listened to the show to this point, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We will be back soon with more fun and music.

In the space year 2000, Genesis were a spent force. With the relative disappointment of the Calling All Stations tour 2 years behind them, there seemed to be only re-issues and greatest hits packages in the future. Enter Archive #2, a three disc collection of B’sides and live tracks culled from the period 1976-1992 (ignoring the Ray Wilson years completely), presented as a follow up to the Gabriel-era Archive of 2 years before.

There are some real gems included on this compilation, from unreleased Hackett-era live tracks to 1980’s B’sides, there is something for all fans and it brings together rare tracks in one place for the first time. I mean…really there’s not much else I can say about it. You should listen to the podcast.

BUT! Gary has been lost forever, seemingly into Hell, and Simon is trying to move on with his life. Enter a mysterious professor and his newest invention. Can Simon continue the podcast alone? Will he find a willing victim…er…co-host, to help him spread the word? Or will he bring about the end of all things in an insane attempt to rescue his friend…er…acquaintance.

In 1996 after a whopping 25 years with the band, Phil Collins decided to call it quits and leave. And that was the end of Genesis…

Not really! Undeterred, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford pressed on. They wrote an albums worth of material at The Farm in January 1996 and in the meantime began a lenghty audition process. Many popular names were thrown into the ring such as Fish, Francis Dunnery and Mick Strickland. Finally, in a tense, X-Factor-like finish, the field was narrowed to two. Dave Longdon and Ray Wilson. And if you don’t know already who won the gig well…this will be a lovely surprise for you.

Sadly, this incarnation of the band was not to last. A cancelled North American tour and poor record sales meant that Tony and Mike elected not to carry on, and in 1998, after just one album Genesis was no more. Until the 2007 reunion tour that is! But that’s a whole other story.

Back in the present day, Gary has roped Simon into a shopping trip. But something isn’t right, and their refusal to accept the events of the last episode may have dire consequences. It may be the end of Genesis but it might also be the end of the world! Find out the secret history of Dave the zombie, meet our local Conservative candidate, gasp at the poor accents on display, scream at the unworldy beings dragged from another world, and I’m not talking about Gary OR Simon!

Who lives? Who dies? Who tells your story? Find out in this super-sized episode, all about the 15th and final Genesis album.

So…if you’ve read this far you probably enjoy listening. If you do please consider supporting us by clicking on this link and contributing the price of a coffee to the running of the podcast. Invisible Touch was 5 years before, so the casual observer would be forgiven for thinking that Genesis were no more. But in October/November 1991 they unleashed the 70-minute epic We Can’t Dance, their first album geared to the increasingly popular CD format. Featuring a chart busting 6 singles, the album went on to be thier 5th UK number 1 and sold 4 million copies in the USA alone, it also led to a highly succesful world tour which took in the sunny climes of Texas, Paris, Belin and Wolverhampton,

Phil was responsible for a lot of the lyrics on the album, which is why it is very much in the vein of his 1989 album “But Seriously…” covering such topics as domestic violence, televangelism, the plight of the Kurdish people and drink driving, it sets a much more serious tone for the most part (Jesus He Knows Me not included obvs). It was written at the Farm studio and came from jam sessions, as the last 2 albums had been. Sadly (or not depending on if you think Phil ruiend Genesis), it was the end for Phil, who departed in 1996 to focus on his solo career.

But forget all that nonsense, what you really need to know is that something is amiss at The Revelation Station pub, something that Simon and Gary need to sort out before business goes down the pan. What’s the prob Bob? How will they solve it? Just how many tracks will Simon and Gary agree on this time? Is Gary really a heartless, emotionless shell of a man?

In an alternative reality, Genesis split up in 1985. Their biggest hit, Mama, defined the memory of them for 12 years until they reformed in 2007 with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett to tour “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” in a cross-promotion with the big budget Hollywood movie.
If only…
Luckily for us, Genesis didn’t split in 1985, despite the BBC announcing it. No, instead they reformed back at The Farm and recorded what is both their most successful album and their least popular, depending on who you ask. Released in June 1986, it saw the group finally achieving the pop success that they had been craving since their formation all those years ago (18) at Charterhouse. Bolstered by 5 top 5 US singles, it remained in the charts for a staggering 85 weeks and has achieved sales of 6 million so far to date. That, as they say, is a spicy meatball.
The album features some very diverse topics, from protest songs to break up songs to songs about drugs and double-glazing (I guess, I didn’t really pay much attention). It divided fans and critics, with some deriding the electronic instrumentation and pop sensibilities, and others thinking that maybe some people should just chill out and enjoy it for what it is, I mean it’s only music there’s no need to get so uptight. Amiright?

In this episode Simon hopes to get home, but Gary has other plans. He’s got one last errand to run before they can finally head back to the pub. Does Gary like the slow songs? Which song does Simon admit to not liking? Will they ever get back home? Can you spot the error Simon makes in the album overview segment (he corrects himself later, it’s ok)?

Is it called “Shapes”? Is it called “Mama”? No, it’s called “Genesis” and it was released on October 3rd 1983, a mere 10 years after “Selling England By The Pound” if you can believe it!
The album marked a distinct change in sound for the band, which many fans loved (and equally as many hated) but despite that it proved to be a huge success, selling over 4 million copies to hit no.1 in the UK and no.9 in the USA. But it was the single “Mama” that proved to really break the album, with the single reaching no.4 in the UK to be their most successful single to date.
Written and recorded at The Farm, it was the first to be entirely created from jam sessions, hence the collective title for the album “Genesis”. It was an attempt to get back to the pop sound that had been the original intention of those Carthusians all those years before…actually only 15 years before. Crikey! They certainly worked hard didn’t they? 12 albums in 15 years? WHAT HAPPENED PETER?

But in the 21st Century, fresh off the massive success of their live set at Wembley, Gary and Simon are attempting to raise the profile of the pub. Gary has some sort of scheme going on which involves a well-known BBC TV show. What do the boys think of the album? How many different vegetables can Gary name? Does anyone want to buy a Llama? And, perhaps most importantly, is “Illegal Alien” racist?

Find out the answers to all of these questions and so, so much more in this all new episode.

Simon and Gary try their hands at something a bit different.

1982 was a quiet year for the boys in the band. Not. Although there was no studio album released, they put out the 3x3 EP and embarked on an extensive tour culminating in a reunion in Milton Keynes. Phil released an album which built on the success of Face Value. Mike released an album which is largely best forgotten. Tony recorded an album which wasn’t released until 1983.

And they released their third live album “Three Sides Live”, featuring live recordings from the Duke and Abacab tours for the most part. The international release was an unusual hybrid of live tracks and studio tracks, including the unreleased in the US 3x3 EP. The UK version was an unusual hybrid of live track and...some more live tracks.

Back in London, Gary and Simon have made it to Wembley for their live gig. Will they get in? What happens when Gary decides to crowdsurf? Who has the weirdest rider request and will the boys learn a new fact about fireworks? Find out the answers to all these questions and more in this exciting episode.

In May 1982 Genesis released their second EP, 3x3, onto an unsuspecting world. Made up of leftovers from the Abacab sessions it proved to be a modest hit in the UK charts, just like their first EP.
Lead track “Paperlate“ managed to be an homage to both 70’s and 80’s Genesis whilst the other two tracks were also on the EP.

But meanwhile, with the future of the Pub assured, Gary and Simon continue their London adventure with a nice relaxing trip on a bus to their next appointment. It seems Simon has meticulously planned the journey BUT what will happen when things go awry? Get ready for rush hour…

Down on The Farm, something is afoot! It’s Genesis and they’re working on their 11th studio album “Abacab”, named after a random sequence of musical bits and pieces. Recorded in May and June, before being released on 18th September 1981, Abacab marks a huge change of sound for the band. No longer truly “prog”, and featuring predominantly tracks jammed in the studio, the album utterly divided fans and even led to the band being boo-ed on tour.
Undoubtedly influenced by the runaway success of Phils’ “Face Value”, it also in a way saw the band returning to their roots, with shorter, poppier tracks and outside musicians used for the first time since their debut. It sets out the blueprint that Genesis will pursue for the rest of their Phill Collins era, and ultimately lead to their most successful phase.

Back in the future, Gary and Simon have arrived in London and have a very important date to keep. It’s a race across the city with the fate of the podcast at stake! Will they make it? Which track is Gary’s favourite? Will Simon surprise Gary with a shocking revelation? Do they (ahem) like it or not? Will the pub be saved? All these questions will be answered.

1979 was not a great year for Phil Collins. However, the breakdown of his marriage lead to a huge burst of creativity and ultimately brought us his classic first solo album “Face Value”. Similarly, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded and released their first solo efforts.
This podcast is not, however, about those albums. Instead we have a listen to the tenth studio album, and the second recorded by the most famous and successful line up. Duke was released on 24th March 1980 and was their very first number 1 album in the UK!
The album saw a return to longer songs following And Then There Were Three’s dalliance with shorter tracks. It also contains what could be considered the first proper Genesis “Pop” song, which went on to become the 7th biggest single of 1980 in Canada!

In this bumper edition of The Revelation Station, the boys get embroiled in a mystery on their way to an important date and decide to while away the time by turning an ear to Gary’s first experience of Genesis’ music. Does it hold up after so long? Is it a royal success or a big pile of dookie? Can Simon accurately predict which songs Gary will hate? Just whodunnit? The answers to all these questions will be revealed…

Featuring guest stars:
Tea Lady: Kay MrsGary
Hercule Poirot: Richmond Leishi
And a cast of thousands!

Released on 31st March 1978, Genesis’ ninth studio album featured a streamlined sound and line up. Steve Hackett had departed the group in mid 1977, dissatisfied with the band dynamic, leaving the core trio of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford that would exist for a good 15 years and go on to huge international success.

It all starts here folks. Hated by some, loved by others the album featured their biggest hit to date in Follow You, Follow Me, a sign of things to come. Also notable for the inclusion of shorter songs, in an attempt to cram in more ideas. This is only one of three albums they ever released that has no long songs.

Returning back from winter break with an appropriately themed album, Gary and Simon find themselves caught between a rock and a dart place as they try to bring more business to the pub. Despite this they find time to discuss the merits of …And Then There Were Three… and spend an inordinate amount of time singing in this episode.

What do they think of the album? Is it a bullseye or a double one? Which of the two single releases do they prefer? Which one of the pair clearly misses Steve but refuses to admit it? And what cover version should you definitely definitely avoid at all costs? The answers to all this and more can be found right here in a bumper length episode of The Revelation Station podcast.

For their second (geddit?) release of 1977, Genesis unleashed their second (geddit) live album, Seconds Out. Recorded mostly at the Palais de Sport in Paris between 11th and 14th June 1977 (with The Cinema Show recorded at the same venue on 23rd June 1976), this double live set is widely regarded as one of “the best live albums ever, by Genesis fans at least, and was released to critical acclaim.

The album would be released in October 1977, by which time Steve Hackett had already departed the group for solo pastures, and in fact the remaining trio would have recorded their next release, more of that next time. Another chapter of the book of Genesis closed and a new era would begin in 1978.

Right here, right now, Gary and Simon discuss the album in a most appropriate setting. Do they agree with the fan consensus about the album’s greatness? Does Gary learn to love Suppers Ready? What do they think of Phil covering Peter? All this and more can be found in this episode.

1977 was an important year for Genesis. They had released their first two albums with Phil Collins the year before and were rapidly becoming one of the biggest live acts on the planet.

No new album was released this year, but instead an EP of unused tracks from the Wind & Wuthering sessions was released on 20th May, and the double live album Seconds Out would emerge in October. Sadly, Steve Hackett wouldn’t see out the year as guitarist with the band, leaving this EP of three songs as his parting shot.

In the right now, Gary and Simon muse over the merits of the EP whilst completing a favour for a friend. What do they think of the songs herein? Is it a worthy final tribute to Steve? Should any of these been on Wind & Wuthering? Or should 50 tonnes of it be dumped on the Foreign Office Roof? Find out the answers to all these questions and more in this special episode.

In 1976 Phil Collins is the singer in Genesis and they release their brand new album, A Trick of the…hang on, wait a minute! They released another album in 1976? Does Peter Gabriel know about this?

So….released as an early Christmas present, their second album of 1976 arrived on December 17th. Their 8th overall, it firmly cemented Phil Collins as the lead singer and featured classics that would become staples of the live set for many years to come.

However, as was not happy in the Genesis camp, and Steve Hackett was counting out time before he left, frustrated that his songwriting efforts were being side-lined cough AllInAMouse’sNight cough, he made the decision to leave the band in mid-1977.

In this episode! Gary and Simon find themselves in a salty situation, but use the time to discuss the second chapter in the “Phil Ruins Genesis” story (Spoiler: Phil doesn’t ruin Genesis, don’t be ridiculous). Do they enjoy the album? Which song makes it into Simon’s “Top 500” tracks list? How exactly does one eat a juicy raw rat? All these answers and more can be found in this episode!

On October 1st 2018, Steve Hackett began his Genesis Revisited with Band and Orchestra tour in Nottingham.

Here are the thoughts of two fools who went to see that show. Recorded live, respectively, on a Tram; in a branch of Starbucks and in Simon's car. The sound quality is variable in places and topics of discussion include: Coffee, Trams, Vodka and what Steve might get up to on his visit to Nottingham.

In 1975 Peter Gabriel quit Genesis just as they were about to hit the big time! Or, pay off some debts at least. He retired to his vegetable patch and, eventually, on to a successful solo career. But his involvement in the Genesis story was over for the most part. Which leaves the group without a singer...

Enter Phil, reluctantly at first, but with increasing confidence he takes on the mantle of front man and wins over literally everybody ever (note: maybe not everybody). After sifting through hundreds of demo tapes, the band finally settle on Phil and get down to recording their breakthrough album, A Trick Of The Tail. Released on 13th February 1976 to critical and commercial success, the album and subsequent tour raised the band's profile in the USA which ultimately led to the sell out tours of later years.

Back in the present day, Simon is taking Gary to get his casts removed and they decide to fill the hours waiting with a discussion about this seminal album. Do the boys take to Phil as lead vocalist? Is everything the band do from now on rubbish? What is the connection to Russ Abbot? Which classic does Gary hate this time? All this, and maybe more, is answered in this episode, featuring a surprise appearance from a popular comedian.

In 1998, barely a year after the band released their last studio album, the classic 5 man line up reunited to compile 4CDs of largely unreleased tracks. Covering the years 1967-1975 (although the tracks are placed in roughly reverse order) this gem contains the only official live recording of the whole of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (bar "IT" due to a lazy tape op), and demos of the band from before they were even tied to a record deal.

Returning to the pub a broken man, literally, Gary does his best to find some joy within these tracks. Will he agree that Supper's Ready is a masterpiece? Will Simon be able to convince him it's worth the purchase? Will either of them get beaten up by the barman? Find out the answer to all these questions and more in this special episode.

Got anything you want to share with us? Stories about upcoming albums? How you got into Genesis in the first place? Even feedback about the episodes, anything is welcome. Send it to revelationstationpodcast@gmail.com.

In 1970 the BBC commissioned a documentary on the artist Michael Jackson, no not that one, and asked everyone's favourite, teenage, unknown, prog band to come up with the music. Lost until 2007, where they were part of that years 1970-1975 box set, these 4 tracks are an interesting look at a developing sound.

SO! What does Gary think to having his holiday interrupted by Simon to talk about the history of these 4 tracks? Will he tell him to beat it? Does he think the tracks are bad, enough to make him scream? Or does he like the way they make him feel? Will Simon be able to live with himself everytime he looks at the man in the mirror? Errrm...some sort of pun involving Earth Song. You get the picture.

This is the second of two minisodes, look out for a full length episode coming soon. In the meantime you can send us feedback to revelationstationpodcast@gmail.com

Released on 13th October 1973, just days after Simon’s first birthday, Selling England By The Pound is the 5th Album by Genesis. It becomes their best seller to date, reaching number 3 in the UK charts on the back of hit single “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”.
