This episode was a live podcast recording in honour of the 2023 Women's History Month. This episode delves into the subject of women's digital rights and the obstacles encountered by them in the digital realm. In it, we break down what causes the majority of online violence directed at women, what kind of women are most frequently targeted, and the best ways for women to succeed in digital environments without facing discrimination. The Media Challenge Initiative's CEO, Abaas Mpindi, and Pollicy researcher Bobina Zulfa were among the panel of experts.

Bobina highlighted the necessity of a systemic shift, urging governments to enact rules and regulations that safeguard women's rights online and guarantee them equitable access to the digital realm, while Abaas urges us to assess the weight of what it is we intend to communicate before we publish it. "...For me, it's just the humanity that we need..." he stated.
"How DigitALLy Fit Are You?" was, is, and always will be a time for us to pause and consider if we are the ones abusing others, the abuse victims, or just well-meaning people who want to make digital environments safe for everyone.

We had to explain what Postpartum Depression is before we could just go on to the next episode. In the previous episode, Oby, painted for us a picture of what it is like for motherhood to come along with postpartum depression, and while her experience highlights a quiet maternal health issue, I felt it was crucial that we discuss the subject in further detail with our resident Psychiatrist.

So in this Episode, here are the Answered Questions:

  1. What is Postpartum Depression?
  2. Why does it happen?
  3. Who is at the risk of suffering from it?
  4. Can it be prevented?

This specific episode had a live audience whose questions were answered by Dr. Denis Agaba. For a while now, love or relationships have not been given enough attention on the podcast but now that Valentine's Day fell on a day new episodes get published, there is no way I was going to avoid it.

While prepping for this episode, though, I had to ask around for what questions people wished to ask the psychiatrist (in regards to love and mental health) and I think the question that struck me the most was "Does love have to always be painful?"

There are more questions you may have that the doctor answered and you can catch them on this episode.

This right here has, for many months, stood to be the most listened-to episode on the podcast.

Our guest star is none other than Mercy Geno Apachi - a journalist by profession and a poet by passion. From this episode, we learn that Poetry for Geno made it easier for her to set her emotions in motion, right from childhood to date. Mercy is one of those people who held onto their dream for over a decade only for societal standards to snatch it from them. In this conversation, she and I went over how and why her journey to pursue her love for journalism came to a still.

Listen in and find out why this episode ranks number 1. Also don't hesitate to let us know why you think it does.

I had my face in my palm when I heard my voice in this episode. I was very fresh in this and still walked around with the worst self-doubt there is. This is the 11th episode on the podcast and the 3rd most listed-to episode.

I have published it as it was, in 2020 and the only thing that has changed is the amplification of the audio.

The relevance of the conversation on "men and mental health" still stands and will forever be evergreen content until we appreciate the pertinence of mental health and even so, recognise men as wholesome human beings whose mental health should be recognised.

Biyinzika trailblazed the men's presence on the podcast and I am forever grateful for his willingness to show up in my toddling stage.

Gratitude is a noun. It is a warm feeling of thankfulness towards the world, or towards specific individuals. In such a turbulent world that constantly challenges our ability to stay on our feet, the smidgens of gratefulness are like droplets of water on a dry leaf. They repair our brokenness. They refill our cups.

In this solo episode, I pointed out some of the moments that inspire gratitude and went on to answer the common questions related to Hash Time with Nabuguzi Kiwanuka. Why the podcast? Why Mental Health? What took me so long to start? (Touching a bit on Imposter Syndrome and how to thrive beyond it).

I hope that as a result of listening to this episode, you manage to create moments that allow you to be the starter and a willing participant in difficult conversations. Whether with yourself or the people you keep experiencing in life.

Define Yourself is the episode that captures what it is like to belong to two countries yet neither of them recognise you. The first time we chatted about it, I compared her situation to that of the mixed race - not white enough, not black enough.

After sharing this episode, a listener related to Joyce's story. His Tooro family doesn't recognise him because he was raised by a Muganda mom. While this seemed to be an episode about nations, I realised that there is so much more that affects our identity.

What is so bad about home that you cannot go back there and settle? Meshack answers this question in his debut novel, Once There Was a Star, and in this episode.

Once There Was A Star, made me realize what privilege looks like and to appreciate how we indeed experience life differently. While there were real victims of war, I only experienced the tragedy of war in a book.

When I read the book, I found myself so fully immersed in it that I almost failed to draw the line between my real-life experience and what was in the book. I found myself leaving home while looking over my shoulder so that anything looking suspicious of another war would find me alert. It required me to keep reminding myself that the war was just in the book I was reading.

Weeks ago, I sat down with the author, Meshack Yobby, to talk about the relevance of this book, why he chose war for his debut novel, and how heavy the creation process was.

If you have read this book or are a lover of a good story, this is the episode for you.

Clare Asiimwe is one of Uganda's celebrated fashion designers and her story had always been a mystery until I sat with her. Her official journey into the fashion industry is one about a girl who felt livened when she landed on an opportunity to join fashion school even when she did not know where she would get the tuition.

In this conversation, Clare and I discuss topics such as:

  1. Her background
  2. Her influences and inspiration
  3. Her Breakthrough
  4. The people who held out their hands to get her to where she is as a designer
  5. Challenges in the fashion industry
  6. Imposter Syndrome
  7. Setting boundaries as an entrepreneur

This episode is a show of honor to all the people who said YES to her when she was starting out and if you hear any name of the person that you know, please do give them a shout out. They say it is always better to give people their flowers while they are alive.

We are still chasing the goal of tranquillity, before we launch ourselves into Part 2 of season 4. After the last two weeks' explorations, today we delve into the deeply calming brown noise.

Brown Noise mimics nature sounds such as strong winds and low thunder; and for the purposes of this month's goal, Brown Noise comes in to help you quieten your internal thoughts that make it hard for you to relax, meditate or sleep.

This month is for us to take a pause and what that means is that I will be releasing different kinds of noise to help you find your needs for tranquillity. We started with white noise last week and today we go in with a more balanced and more soothing sound to your ear.

Pink Noise. It mimics nature sounds such as the ocean waves and steady rain. For the purposes of this month's goal, Pink Noise comes in to help you find peace, calm, focus and even help you sleep better. You may also use it as a perfect ally for meditation and study.

If you're working on something but are struggling to focus, this is it for you and if it gets to the end before you finish what you are working on, re-plug your headsets. If you play it for yourself to sleep, it won't take 5 minutes for you to fall into a deep and peaceful slumber.

Today I start with white noise and if you have no idea of what white noise is, it is that perfect blend of soothing sounds that can bring you peace, and calm, and even help you sleep better. But white noise goes beyond that – it's also your ally for meditation and study, creating the ideal environment for focus and mindfulness.

If you're working on something but are struggling to focus, this is it for you and if it gets to the end before you finish what you are working on, re-plug your headsets. For sleep, it's a faster remedy, you may not need a replug.

A therapist's perspective on Online Violence as one of the causes of the digital gender divide. In today's episode, Lorna Nakabuye and I, discuss the impact of online violence on one's mental health. The problem of online violence is widespread and its adverse effects on the mental health of users of online platforms are not taken seriously, causing them to struggle with its unbearable burden. The episode is more like a side B of the "How DigitALLy Fit Are You?" episode with a significant exploration of Online Violence's impact on mental health and well-being.

"How DigitALLy Fit Are You?" was, still is and forever will be, a moment of reflection for all of us to gauge whether we are the victims of abuse or the abusers or just healthy users keen on making digital spaces safe for anyone and everyone.

The episode was a podcast live recording in commemoration of women's day. In this episode, we explore the topic of women's digital rights and the challenges that women face in the digital world. We discuss issues like the root cause of online violence targeted towards women, who the most targeted type of woman is, and how best women can thrive in digital spaces without being silenced. The expert panel included Abaas Mpindi, the CEO of the Media Challenge Initiative and Bobina Zulfa, a Researcher from Pollicy.

Bobina emphasizes the need for a system change - governments to create laws and policies that protect women's rights online and ensure that they have equal access to the digital world; and Abaas calls for us to be more mindful in the way we communicate. To assess the weight of what it is we intend to communicate before we publish it. "...For me it's just the humanity that we need..." he said.

For this 97th episode, our guest is none other than Nandala Mathew. Mathew is one of the first Ugandan professional dancers, I got to know. Forget the side gigs that you do with your talent. Nandala, as you will hear in our conversation, knew from the get-go that being a dancer is the dream to chase and like any dedicated achiever, he pursued nothing else other than that.

Today’s episode is almost a replica, if not a sequel of the first episode. So in the same spirit, I invited Marjorine Nantambi to help us understand how vision boards work. In the spirit of reflection and assessment, I ran polls on three social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), asking people what 2022 was like for them. Thoughts were shared and "smooth" ranked at 7%, "a balance of both" at 42% then "one hell of a bumpy ride" took the highest percentage at 51%.

In this publication, Kaggwa breaks down for us his 2022 experience, specifically, the period between when his episode was released to the day I talked to him. He shares with us what he believes should be locked up in 2022 and what should be carried forward to 2023.

For a couple of weeks, Nabuguzi has been reading the Woman Beneath Her Feet anthology (authored by Kenyan Writers). The stories and their relatability with what's happening in society are what got her glued to the end. The stories also made her feel like she's quite the kind who enjoys gossip and she's here to share the gossip and hearty laughter with you. It is a perfect way to start the week so missing out on it may be just one way to say you do not deserve good things, yet we know YOU DO.

When we ask people to reach out to us, in their moments of pain, do we do it, well aware that we are equipped with the right tools to be the ones they should reach out to? I believe one of the most grueling forms of regret is the usage of wrong words on other people, worse on the people struggling with unimaginable depths of emotional pain; and this is very possible when we are caught unaware with so much information, we would not know how to deal with, even on a personal level. This is where Nabuguzi is coming from, in this week's journal.

One of the wonders I would swear was impossible to find was someone doubling as a doctor and a comedian. On set with me today, is Dr. Hilary Okello. He is the only medical personnel in Uganda making a living from comedy. The first time I saw his profile on social media, I was sure Dr is just a title he picked on to stand out amongst his fellow stand-up comedians but to my shock he was indeed a doctor and since then I have been very curious about how he found himself at the intersection of science and art.

Our conversation explores;

  4. and so much more you will get to hear.

While Pink Noise is said to be deeper than White Noise, in tone and intensity, Brown Noise is a bit deeper than pink. Brown Noise a.k.a Red Noise amplifies its lower frequencies more than Pink Noise does and by doing so, it produces a deep comforting sound that blocks disruptive noises.

CNN Health connects Brown Noise to “the rumble of strong winds, a rushing river or pounding surf.” Some suggest it is best used for concentration but you can also use it for:

  • Relaxation
  • Sleep aid, and
  • Noise-Blocking

Religion on the internet, is defined as a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices. However, many a times we are caught in arguments over whose God or personal system of belief is more superior. Such sense of superiority cost Sokoto a 200 level student, Deborah Samuels, when her fellow students stoned her to death and subsequently burnt her body.

Bura Bari Nwilo, a writer, poet and entrepreneur from Nigeria and in the conversation he shared how the events that rendered the deceased blasphemous unfolded. In this episode of Hash Time with Nabuguzi Kiwanuka, we've got a little bit of a twist. Instead of me doing the interviewing, I'm the one being interviewed by one of last year's guests, Jennifer Nyakwera T. Who I am, how and why I get to choose the topics on the podcast, are questions I've been asked more often than not; and this episode, I get to answer them, among others.

This is the third and final episode on the conversation I had with Jennifer. In it she cautions mother's not to let their children disrespect maids because these children end up carrying the disrespect into their homes.
