Episode 019 of Garage to Goliath | Leaders Building Legacies Podcast, host Dan Quiggle, tells a story of how John Wooden invested in people as a way to remind leaders they too should invest in others around them. One of his greatest teaching tools can be seen as you walk into the Wooden Center at UCLA, a 20-foot tall, gold-inlaid version of his famous Wooden Pyramid. The individual building blocks that comprise the Wooden Pyramid read: Industriousness, Friendship, Loyalty, Cooperation, Enthusiasm, Self-Control, Alertness, Initiative, Intentness, Condition, Skill, Team Spirit, Poise, Confidence, and Competitive Greatness. Not a single block in that pyramid reads ‘Winning.’ Coach Wooden believed that if players built their lives, their game, and their team on these fundamental building blocks, that winning would follow, both on the hardwood and in life. He used these fundamental principles to build a winning culture at UCLA and to change the trajectory of lives far beyond his basketball team. Are our companies any different? Can’t we use our companies and our influential leadership platforms to create long-term value for people in our sphere of influence?

Episode 016 of Garage to Goliath | Leaders Building Legacies Podcast, host Dan Quiggle, talks with Mike Barbata. The CEO of Jet Delivery, talks about how legacy leaders create value for people and communities. Mike understands, practices, and lives out the truism that people are the most important part of business; profits are a byproduct of treating people well and creating value for people. He was humble and candid to share about a time when he wasn’t leading well. He said when he first started out in business leadership he didn’t really care about the people that much and realized that wasn’t leadership, that was just having a hierarchical title. He reiterated to me that true leadership is being on a team and told me that he never says that people work under him or work for him, rather that people work with him. From his experience of not leading well, he was able to course correct and now talks about the 5 gifts he wants to give his employees.

Episode 015 of Garage to Goliath | Leaders Building Legacies Podcast, host Dan Quiggle, shares a story from his own business that highlights the importance of why legacy leaders need kitchen cabinets. As leaders, we are only as good as the people we surround ourselves with—and not just during the good times. It’s easy to think we have good people around us when the sailing is smooth. We need to be extra judicious with the type of people we place in our kitchen cabinet and prioritize building healthy relationships with leaders of integrity, optimism, and humility. Navigating rough waters is inevitable in life and when these rough seas come our way, we need to already have people in place to speak into our leadership journey during those trials.

Episode 009 of Garage to Goliath | Leaders Building Legacies Podcast, host Dan Quiggle, talks on a valuable lesson he learned early on in his career and how this lesson applies directly to business and directly to business leadership. The role of business is to create value in society. Money and profits, those are a result of creating a lot of value, for a lot of people, over a sustained period of time. If you focus solely on profits, I think your success will be limited. Rather, as a business leader, if you focus on value creation, you will have success beyond your wildest imagination.

We can succeed in this life by helping others. We can do incredibly well, just by doing good.
