Is mindfulness really the solution to better leadership? In this episode, we challenge the popular formula of “Mindfulness = Empathy + Psychological Safety” and explain why it often leads to fragile, ineffective leadership. Instead of stopping at self-awareness or emotional connection, we introduce a more complete framework: impact equals right action plus right motive. You’ll learn how overvaluing your personal leadership strengths—or undervaluing what others on your team bring to the table—can lead to blind spots that hold your organization back.
We also explore the critical difference between reading the room and leading the room, and how insecure leadership often keeps us stuck in cycles of validation rather than transformation. Whether you’re leading a small team or an entire organization, this episode will help you move beyond surface-level solutions and step into leadership that creates real, lasting impact. Listen now and discover how to lead with both clarity and courage.

We’re excited to kick off a brand-new podcast series that dives deep into the principles from our book Lead for Impact.
In our first episode, Mark Stanifer and I set the stage for a journey that will challenge and inspire you to rethink your approach to leadership.
The heart of the episode revolves around a crucial question: “Are you leading for impact or validation?”
This is the question every leader needs to ask themselves. Your motives matter, and understanding whether you’re driven by a genuine desire to make a difference or by the need for personal validation is key to becoming a more effective leader.
We dive into practical examples that show how the same action - like checking in on a team member or building a legacy - can be motivated by either impact or validation. It’s all about self-awareness and making sure your leadership is aligned with the right intentions.
Join us in this series as we explore how you can lead with purpose and make a real difference.

In today's episode, we’re diving deep into something that’s been absolutely revolutionary for me in over two decades of leadership development, and I think it could be for you too.
If you’ve ever hired someone and later thought, “What was I thinking?”—you’re not alone. The truth is, most leaders pick people based on temperament—how charismatic or extroverted they are—and hope that’ll translate into great leadership. But here’s the thing: that approach is flawed, and it can lead to some serious misses.
Mark and I sit down to talk about why building your team around temperament can cause inconsistency, bias, and missed opportunities. Instead, we introduce a shift—a template-based model that’s all about aligning your team with your vision and scaling leadership development across your entire organization.
I’m really excited about this conversation because we’re not just talking theory here. We’re giving you practical insights and a tool we’ve developed called the Identity Fear Quotient (IFQ) that can help you put this approach into action.
So, if you’re ready to rethink how you develop leaders and build a team that’s secure, clear, and ready to move your mission forward, this episode is for you.

Today, we're delving into three critical problems that leaders often encounter on their journey to harmonize leadership with their vision.
Recognizing When You're Losing Heart Losing heart means our minds become consumed with questions like, "Am I doing a good job?" and "Do they like me?" When we're in this state, our focus shifts away from the vision and toward self-doubt.
Avoiding a Busted Leadership Capacity Leadership isn't just about charisma and vision; it's about developing the necessary capacity to lead effectively. Your talent can exceed your character if you're not careful.
Preventing a Breakup of Relationships No leader sets out with the intention of damaging relationships, whether in their personal life or within their team. However, many leaders inadvertently undermine relationships due to insecurity, frustration, or a lack of understanding.
Remember, leadership transcends mere vision; it encompasses creating robust systems to achieve that vision while nurturing a culture that cherishes relationships. Always bear in mind that the people ARE the vision. When you internalize this profound truth, your leadership will radiate impact, authenticity, and purpose.

Although the journey starts internally, we grow to externalize it in the context of our community, and we spark true transformation and new learning. And, because our internal world is endlessly explorable, the transformation we can bring to our communities is never-ending.
We explore these concepts and teachings in the recording from “REVOLUTIONIZE", part 9 of the 9-part navigate Series for the leaders who want to lead themselves.
The Navigate Series is a live video broadcast, going until September 2020. It takes participants on a journey from self-discovery to community transformation. Throughout the year, they’ll be unpacking the "how-to" of leadership development, starting with internal dimensions of identity (how do I understand who I am), to how that works out in the real world (what do I do, and why), to how to shift into more authentic and powerful expressions (how do I get better), to how we work out those new expressions with those around us (how do I transform my community/city).
In this session you’ll experience:
A deep exploration of a concept with Chris McAlister of SightShift.
An interview with an expert to dive further into the idea.
Prompts & exercises to complete with your fellow leaders.
Tools to integrate the new concept for the long haul.

We pay attention to our thoughts because they shape our realities - showing up too big or too small is a symptom of a malformed mindset.

Identity - it is about you, and it's not about you at all. This is the both/and starting point for a journey of exploration and growth.
This is a recording from "CENTER", part 1 of the 9-part navigate Series for the leaders who want to lead themselves.

In the session, we’ll employ a 3-part learning model to: 1. explore: an unfolding journey of content that builds on itself 2. experience: honest & vulnerable dialogues with local leaders 3. engage: engrossing exercises with fellow participants

This audio is from the online academy that has 6 courses at www.thesightshiftacademy.com
This is the first lesson in the course on relationships.
This isn't a part of the 12 skills of a leader series happening right now.
I talk about the 3 top moments while I also tackle a list of ever growing questions I have received from you on everything from what to do when someone steals your idea in a meeting to what action to take when you've been humiliated.
“I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

10,000 steps concludes with this episode!
The focus of the podcast in 2016 was 48 episodes marked by (# ) to designate the number.
It's part of a coaching program to help you live out a clear mission and build an awesome community.
10,000 steps continues. Now we're in part 2 focused on building culture/community you want.
10,000 steps continues.
Learn the difference between general wisdom and customized wisdom. Then you can move forward every day.
FALL (pay attention to let go or force what isn't working) KEY ?: what (isn't working?)
WINTER (lean in or try everything) KEY ?: why (is this happening OR why isn't it working?
SPRING (move bold or get your ducks in a row) KEY ?: What (is to be done?)
SUMMER (enjoy/rest/play and get lazy or with eyes on foundation) KEY ?: What (is to be enjoyed?)
10,000 step journey continues.
The template I mentioned that I use for putting together a talk/pitch/etc: 1. common ground 2. deconstruct 3. viewpoint 4. apply
The 6 keys that will help you develop your ability: PREPARATION: 1. what's at stake? 2. plan the pace 3. start with tension DELIVERY 4. self-aware humor 5. speak for action 6. time to play
10,000 step journey. 1 simple idea. 6 feelings you'll experience as you keep going:
Quick break from the 10,000 steps podcast series. This audio supplements the people that have been through the one on one Figure That Shift Out coaching program. It's a recap of the 14 solutions or tools from FTSO:
Feeling defeated for how the start of 2016 didn't match your intentions? 1. Find the next small step to re-engage and take it.2. Focus on building an ideal day not an ideal week.
The last episode of the series as Eric completes the Figure That Shift Out program. And we find out he's a real human at the end.
Eric's back! The format of the podcast is changing but this and the the remaining conversation needed to be shared.
In this series I'll be posting a VERY short episode each day of the week where I read a succinct paragraph that focuses my mind for that specific day.
A little break from the live and on air coaching series due to travel schedule. In this series I'll be posting a VERY short episode each day of the week where I read a succinct paragraph that focuses my mind for that specific day.
There's a special announcement at the beginning. 2 new books released ?!?! figurethatshiftout.com theriderbook.com
Don't be fooled. It's a 10x from very small beginnings. But I wanted to commemorate the moment.
I created a little free mini course at chrismcalister.com/toughconversations This is just a short part of the advanced module.
Questions reveal hunger:* How did that feel? See if they want more. (Did you feel misjudged or misunderstood by anything I said?) * Notice their questions and avoid getting hooked to share. * Tell a story and see if they ask a followup question. * What did you hear me say?
I put a call out in the podcast to see if someone would like to go through our initial 12 week coaching program live and on air. I was looking for someone new to SightShift and hungry to grow. Props to Eric for jumping in. I loved how he voiced his skepticism that we could do this in 12 weeks. These aren't pre-recorded. I have no idea if it will work but I'll load each week's episode as it gets recorded.
Write yourself a permission slip to enjoy that ice cream. links that were mentioned: 1. Help me have awesome meetings! 2. What 5 actions unleash an engaged team?
Adam does a fun interview with Chris as they discuss critical components of leading well and one action all leaders need to force. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FREE GUIDE FROM THIS EPISODE!
I heard those painful words, "You got the job done but you burned me out doing it."
Whether you’re building a family or a team or an organization….
I’ve watched leaders make 1 blunder that blocks their ability to build the people around them:
They judge when they need to UNDERSTAND OR ADJUST.
When you are stuck or blocked and out of creativity make sure you don't miss this clue. (short epsd)
Mistake #7 : I repeat self sabotaging choices. Learn how to replace distractions with desires that are true to who you are. You can relax your way into transforming your life.
Mistake #6 : I insecurely try to be accepted by others and as a result I push them away.
Mistake #5 : I make myself responsible for the choices of other people. You can only attract and grow your most important relationships when you give up control. You're not responsible for the choices and behavior of others.
Mistake #4 - When you're blindly focused on the goal you won't enjoy the process. When you learn to be centered and focused you can regain lost motivation.
Sometime last night we broke 20K feed hits. Thank you! Special short episode to commemorate.
Mistake #3 - I am internally distracted. You can be here. now. You can notice the important signals.
Mistake #2 : I am unknowingly driven by fear. This episode is part of the 7 piece series, "Mistakes everybody makes but few learn from"
Starting a 7 part series on mistakes everybody makes but few learn from. Mistake #1 : I don't live from a secure identity.
Let's jam. Want a secure core (identity)? In just a few minutes I break down how we can work together.
When you're insecure you fall prey to the 4 part process of manipulation. Stunned -> Influenced -> Mass Hysterics -> Numb
Enjoy hearing Blaine's perspective as an actor, artist, leader on being human. (Excuse a few tech difficulties.)
Am I too late? Have I failed too much? Is anybody noticing? And one more lie that drives the rest.
