We're back! Sorry for yet another long break, but I had a lot of work to do to prepare for my PhD Preliminary exams. In this episode we'll explain what those are and why they deserved all of my attention.
We're back with tragic news! The government has decided to remove the American Burying Beetle from the endangered species list, thus revoking its protection! The American Burying Beetle has reportedly made a comeback, but is still projected for extinction. Does one species of beetle lost matter? Should we fight for it? How many other have shared this fate? Listen to gain insight on these questions and more!
This week we're talking about Fatal Invention by Dorothy Roberts. It's a book all about how science has been perpetuating race as a biological construct when it is actually a social construct. This book is one Caitlin and I picked up to help educate ourselves on the struggle that Black people in America face every single day. But this book also talks a bit about Latinx and Indigenous people as well. In case you haven't guess already (by the numerous hints in our other episodes and quite a few tweets), I'm going back to school for my PhD! This was a decision I've been struggling with for about 2 years, but ultimately I could not get a job teaching college students with only a Masters. It stinks, but I know I have the passion and drive to pursue this new degree and get my dream job. Shout out to Caitlin for listening to me going back and forth on this decision for the past 2 years. I can't wait to share this journey with you all! Let us know if you're a fellow grad students or someone interested in grad school so we know how much of this new path we should share on the podcast. It certainly will not replace our buggy fun, but we have shared things about our Master's in the past and it might be helpful to some if I do so for the PhD as well!
Side note: In the few days after recording this episode (because we actually recorded early for once!), I read some blogs and watched a few videos from people who had a terribly pessimistic view on PhD's and academia. I understand that the job market is over saturated with PhD's, that it's really hard to get a job in academia, and that many argue the high education system is broken right now. This is something I've taken into account when making my decision to return to school. However, for me I have a passion for teaching college students and knowing that they're not always being treated the best makes me want to teach them more. Regardless of how "broken" the system may be, if those of us who see that immediately back off and change their careers/dreams, then no one is left to fix the situation. Our students are the future and they deserve the education they're paying so much for. I'm optimistic about my ability to help make my future courses, at the very least, a worth while opportunity for my students. I'm looking forward to my next four years learning more and working towards my goal!

As you know we love pollinators and beneficial insects and we wanted to talk with an expert on the topic. Jessica is a lecturer at the University of Texas San Antonio and she has also studied bumble bees both in rural and urban areas. She has looked as spatial distribution of bumble bees throughout Texas and done some taxonomic work on the bees. Before getting her PhD, Jessica got her masters in teaching and taught high school students, so naturally we were excited to hear about her journey to bumble bee research. She has also spent a lot of time doing public outreach through reaching out to local groups. Have you made your New Year’s resolution yet? We switched it up a little this week and decided to tell you all a little about our New Year’s resolutions. This year we have decided to protect our environment by making simple changes to our lives.
In particular, we talk about switching up our habits of using plastic straws because of their impact on sea turtles. You can find many reusable straws on amazon. Recently, Caitlin bought these straws from Amazon. You cannot taste the metal and they are easy to clean.
We also talk about meat consumption throughout this podcast. We want to eat less meat during the New Year. Most conventional meat is not only bad for the environment, but it also is dangerous for us. As we talk about in this podcast, conventionally raised meat is given an abundance of antibiotics which leads to mutations within the bacteria. These bacteria then become resistant and antibiotics and can lead to infections that are unable to be cured using antibiotics. Finally, we talk about ways to make your home more eco-friendly and save you money on your heating bills by closing up your windows with window kits. if your windows are as drafty as mine you should cover them easily with plastic window kits. Usually, you can find these in the home improvement section of your Walmart and in hardware stores.
We hope that our listeners take the time to try and be a little more eco-friendly this year. By no means are we saying that you have to do everything, but even making a small change could help out the planet and make your life better.

Today we have a surprise episode for you all. We went to Bill Nye this past weekend and it was amazing so we thought we would share our time. He was at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo, Ohio promoting his new book, Unstoppable. He also spent most of the time speaking about the importance of understanding climate change and innovation. It was truly inspiring!
