Sample the sonic connections that exist throughout all cultures as you cross six continents and six centuries of musical history.

With a World Passport, you may never know where your next port of call may be, but you can be sure you'll like it.

In This Episode: Arabic music (1, 2) strongly influenced the neighboring Persian empire. As the armies of the Persia invaded parts of India, Arabic influence was further spread, affecting both modern (3) and folk (4) Indian musical traditions. As large numbers of Indian labor were brought into the British Caribbean during the 19th century, Jamaican Reggae (5, 6) was strongly influenced. As West Indian music spread throughout the Caribbean and into the Southern United States, it mingled with what would become Soul (7) and Gospel (8). The earliest forms of American Gospel included the Spiritual (9) and something called the “Gospel Blues” or a hybrid of early Gospel, Blues (11), and Jazz (10). As the first global music movement, Early Jazz also saw important developments in Europe (12). Early European Jazz drew heavily on an the classical European vocal tradition found in High Opera (13). As a result of colonialism, South African Gospel (14) shares a great deal with both Western vocalism and liturgy, . Culturally, Southern African pre- and post-colonial ties extend along the East African coast into Kenya (15). Kenya was also part of the wide band of Equatorial Africa that began a musical dialogue with Cuba (16) and the larger Afro-Caribbean world (17, 18).

Kompa is a musical genre as well as a dance that originated in Haïti. The name is derived from compas, the Spanish word meaning rhythm or tone. Sung in Haïtian Creole/Patois, Kompa is a uniquely Haïtian musical form, however it does closely share musical attributes in common with it's neighbors; Dominican Merengue, Cuban Son, Puerto Rican Bomba, and West African/Caribbean Highlife/Calypso. Typically Kompa can be recognized by it's fast paced rhythm driven by a trap set (heavy use of symbols and snares), congas, tambourine and guiro.

The music is commonly arranged around a verse and chorus pattern which alternates between major and minor keys for each section. Swift staccato or arpeggiated double guitar backing is another trademark of the genre with the solo instrument of choice being some sort of single reeded soundsource; usually saxophone, harmonica, accordion/concertina or electronically synthesized versions fo these instruments. Big up Haiti!

FELA KUTI & BROKEN ENGLISH

As the first truly Pan-African musical movement, Afrobeat was often sung in the most widely understood language in Africa at the time, known as Broken or Pidgin English. The Language’s invention was necessitated by local African and colonial commercial interests of the 19th century and developed as a means for many ethnic groups to communicate amongst each other as well as with Europeans.

Like other forms of colloquial pidgins such as American Ebonics and Creole, Broken is a highly inflected language. Specific tenses, prepositions and entire words are often left out. While fewer, the words that are actually spoken belie the multiple and complex meanings that can be derived from the context and tone of a given phrase.

Here's a link to an English translation of Fela Kuti’s “ODOO”, a musical masterpiece and epic poem about the state of African politics. This is a subjective and approximate translation because Broken English only truly exists through speech. It is also important to remember that broken is a language which, through irony and sarcasm, forces you speak about the most serious of issues in the most un-serious of ways.

  1. Fela - Overtake don Overtake Overtake

  2. Bola Johnson - Lagos Sisi

  3. Geydu Blay Abolley - This Hustling World

  4. Ikenga Super Sats - Soffry Soffry Catch Monkey

  5. Fela - Swegbe and Pako

You May also visit the "Comments" link to see a version of the translation.

Most easily discernible to Western ears, the roots of both Blues and Reggae can be found in the music of Francophone West Africa. The indigenous musical traditions of the greater Manding and Wolof cultures provided the basis into which was incorporated the stylistic imports of Islam and the later colonial Portuguese and French. The music presented in "Vive l'Afrijazz" represents the result of electrification and amplification on this piece of musical history, as well as the cross-pollination that occurred as African musical forms on both sides of the Atlantic became more readily accessible to each other.

During the 1980's, Rumba Congolaise evolved a new sound as a result of growing Pan-African and international markets as well as changing musical technologies and aesthetics. This series, as a follow up to the "Kinshasa Nairobi Express" series, can be seen as a link between the more lyrical Cuban influenced Rumbas of the preceding decade, and the high energy, electronically profuse Soukous of decades to come.

As the largest Pan-Latin musical phenomenon in history, Salsa has served to unite much of the Spanish speaking world through song and dance. This series, as a follow up to the African inspired "Soy Afro-Salsero" collection, aims to offer the alternate end of the Salsa dialog emanating from the other side of the Atlantic, offering samples that demonstrate the roots and evolution of the artform from the 1950's to the early 1980's.

Across the Atlantic in the British West Indies a close cousin of Highlife was created, starting in the small coastal islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso music dates back to the earliest decades of the 20th centuryt, and has long been synonymous with the yearly Carnival celebrations held in the islands. J'Ouvert (pronounced 'joovey' in the West Indies) is a contraction of the French 'jour ouvert' meaning 'opening day', the first day of Carnival. This series presents gems from Calypso's golden era with highlites from its evolution into the Soca music of the 1970's

This Series covers Afrobeat and its direct musical descendants, Afrorock and Afrofunk .One of the single most influential musical movements of the 20th century, Afrobeat reflects the disillusionment and fervent angst of an Africa awakening from independence to the struggles of an all too modern world. Although wrought from hard political struggle and filled with social commentary, the music’s lyrics never fail to play on the African penchant for wit, satire and irony. Matched with an insistently funky rhythmic backbone, this mixture created a musical sensation that set all of Africa on fire during the 1970's and 1980's.

Created in the countries laying across equatorial Central Africa, the Rumba-Congolaise is the most influential musical form within the continent of Africa itself. While other genres such as Afrobeat , Juju or Mbalax may be more well know in other parts of the world, Rumba-Congolaise and it's direct descendant Soukouse, continue to dominate the African musical landscape to this day. Although the roots of Rumba-Congolaise, and it's ties to the Afro-Cuban son, extend far back into the 19th Century, this series explores the monumental genesis that electrified instrumentation brought to this artform during the late 1960's and 1970's. .

Ejeka jo from the Yoruba, meaning 'let us dance'. Nigerian Juju and it's musical antecedent, Appala, exist as a distincly Yoruba musical genre. Hypnotic percussion and intricate vocal poetry combine to tell a story of heavenly worship and earthly praise; Whether touting the virtues of the Gods, lineages of great kings, noble deeds of national heroes or simply praising the local deputy or minister. Spurred on by verse after verse and infectious, gently accelerating tempos, parties where Juju is played last from day into night and back into day.

By the mid 1950's, in West Africa, a distinct genre of popular music began to emerge from the Anglophone regions centered around Ghana and Nigeria. Heavily influenced by Calypso and Son from the New World, its infectious melding of rhythms and lilting melodies soon ruled the West African musical landscape. As the climate of political independence and optimism spread into the next decade, this post-colonial era spawned the evolution of a new, urban working class. This music was created for a new generation of social dancers who were ready to enjoy the "High-Life".
