Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Brian McLaughlin earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University. He was also an Army major who commanded a paratrooper unit, served in Afghanistan in special operations, and later returned as the media production advisor to General Petraeus and produced documentary short films with an Afghan crew around Afghanistan.

Today, he is a producer and co-president of Emerald Elephant Entertainment where he’s produced four feature films – all acquired for distribution – and have eight in development. Two of his films are also on Amazon Prime Video. Brian is also on the PGA’s Education, Mentoring, and One Guild committees and recently completed a role for The Walt Disney Company as a program manager for health and safety. In this role, he oversaw the COVID compliance department on various TV series, including American Horror Stories and The Other Black Girl.

As a writer, Brian has written two feature film screenplays, one of which was a PAGE Awards quarter-finalist and selected for the Producers Guild’s Diversity Workshop. He was subsequently invited to be a mentor in that phenomenal program as well. As a member of Imagine Entertainment’s invitation-only Impact Community, he’s one of 500 writers accepted from 20,000 applicants who applied to join this exclusive community. Brian is an alumnus of the Writers Guild Foundation’s Veterans Writing Project and has continued as a volunteer in that training. He’s also been published in The Hollywood Reporter and Produced By magazine.

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Nicholas Sapp grew up in the city’s Cascade neighborhood. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a major in Comparative Human Development. While on a leave of absence from his undergraduate studies, Nicholas’ interest in Student Affairs was sparked by the programming offered by Georgia State University’s Office of Black Student Achievement.

Currently, he spends his 4th year working at Emory University with the goal of providing similar programming opportunities to its student population. Outside of work, Nicholas is passionate about Black American street dances and is eagerly learning, competing, and teaching.

Doing so ensures the career you choose will support the lifestyle you want to have. At the same time, however, pay shouldn't be the only factor you consider when deciding on a career.

Born in Portland, Oregon, Travis Opocensky graduated from Portland State University with a degree in psychology after dabbling in mathematics, journalism, and jazz drumset for many years. After graduation, he moved to Shanghai to work as a music education consultant teaching Chinese teachers how to teach American style marching band. Then, he moved to Sydney Australia to pursue Peace and Conflict Studies in graduate school. He also holds a certificate in Health and Humanitarian Supply Chain Management from Georgia Tech.

Ryan Scott earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 2005 with a major in political science and completed his Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in finance and macro economics at Columbia University in 2014 all the while working full-time at Morgan Stanley. Crystal Martinez currently serves as the Director of Federal Education Policy for the University of California (UC) System. She is responsible for providing legislative and regulatory guidance for the Office of the President which supports all ten University of California campuses. During her tenure, Crystal has secured $1.3 billion in federal pandemic assistance for UC’s students and campuses as well as launched a national Double the Pell advocacy campaign.

Prior to joining UC, she served in the Office of Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) as a legislative assistant for a range of issues, including education, housing, child nutrition, arts and humanities, disabilities and social safety net programs. Before joining Sen. Feinstein’s office, Crystal worked at the U.S. Department of Education in the Office of English Language Acquisition, the Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs and the Office of the Secretary. Darren Morgan serves as the Executive Director of Arkansas Commitment – a Little Rock-based nonprofit that works to identify, develop, and assist high-achieving students in reaching their goal of enrolling in college. Under his guidance, 120+ students a year are provided with supplemental college counseling, intensive ACT preparation courses, and exposure to colleges through various college visits and fairs.

Prior to joining Arkansas Commitment, Darren served as an Assistant Dean of Admissions at his alma mater Davidson College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Religion. In addition to recruiting and analyzing applications, Darren implemented outreach programs targeting underrepresented students and high schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District. Can you believe we’re in the last month of the year?! And what a year it’s been.

Today, I share four thoughts/observations/reflections as we approach the last month of the year.

• A movie recommendation for anyone who has a strained relationship with their family. It reiterates the point I made in episode 22 that people are people and the relationships we have are based on the meaning we give them rather than being based on a shared bloodline.

• A few things to keep in mind as we take stock on what we’ve achieved this year. With the pandemic, killings of unarmed Black people and the racial reckoning that followed as well as the recent U.S. election, there has been a lot we’ve dealt with this year. It’s important to keep our achievements in perspective.

• Some pointers for college students who’ll be finishing their last weeks of classes at home after Thanksgiving break.

With all that’s going on in the world, it’s easy to lose perspective about the significant transitions we encounter in various life stages. I received a message on Instagram from a high school classmate about her daughter who started college this year. She’d been having a difficult time making the transition and started considering dropping out.

I talk in this episode about being mindful of the stress associated with life transitions - even in normal times - and encourage our extending grace to ourselves and others as we navigate these rites of passage during abnormal times.

In this first episode of 2020, I start with a recap of the three assignments from the last three episodes of 2019. Now is still a great time to complete these tasks if you haven’t already!

2. Episode 36: follow up with everyone you met (and networked with) during the holidays to schedule career conversations

3. Episode 37: take some time to self-reflect on what worked well and not-so-well in 2019 to determine what you want to continue or do differently in 2020

Then, I share the main reason why people fail to keep their New Year's resolutions year after year. I share the concept of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals and identify the step that is most often missed in this process – which then puts people on a downward spiral to not keeping their resolutions for the new year.

She got her start in perfumery from Fred Cohen, a renowned French chemist and fragrance nose who taught her the art of perfume making according to the age-old French tradition. Her brand MAIR has an unconventional start. A former coworker saw her signature and told her it could one day be on a perfume bottle. Three years later, she turned that dream into her reality.

After experiencing a series of lay-offs after the 2010 economic downturn, Mair committed to turning her interest in perfume into a full-time career. Since launching in 2015, Mair has grown her brand to include a silk scarf and a hand cream to accompany the scent. She is now working on her second sent.

On episode 24, we chat with Sedrick Lakpa, a product of two immigrant parents – his mom is from Sierra Leone and dad is from Ivory Coast in West Africa – who was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia.

Having been interested in film ever since high school, he majored in Film Studies while attending college at Emory University. During his time at Emory, he participated in the student film festival Campus Movie Fest, created his own student television sketch comedy show, and launched a chapter of Sustained Dialogue among many other activities.

After graduating from college, Sedrick began familiarizing himself with the rising film and commercial industry in Atlanta by working various jobs as a production assistant to set dresser to even freelance videographer for projects with Teach for America.

In his 11 years working in the film industry, Sedrick has quite an extensive resume including working on Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity Wars, On the Day Productions’ Life of the Party, and Bonanza Productions’ The Originals and Vampire Dairies to name a few. Having been a set dresser, he is now working to become a writer and director that tells stories about Atlanta through his venture @unitedstorytellers.

A few points he shares:

1. Working for free can pay off. Showing great work ethic while working as an unpaid production assistant helped Sedrick prove himself and build relationships with people who ultimately helped him join the union and recommended him for paid gigs.

2. Most of the opportunities in the film industry are based on relationships. Networking and having a good reputation are critical.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t know. Faking it until you make it doesn’t always work; sometimes you need to ask for clarification to understand what others expect of you.

4. Storytelling is important. Tell stories that you really care about. Your passion and expertise will build an audience.

5. Don’t get stuck doing something that you’re really good at that you really don’t like. It may be easy, but it won’t make you happy.

Born in Germany, Dion “Rocko” Williams attended Lakeside High School in Atlanta, GA before attending Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC on a full football scholarship. After suffering several concussions at the inside linebacker position, he decided to forego his future plans of pursuing a career in the NFL – a decision that would create the opportunity for his next adventure that would make him a trailblazer.

After being contacted by a friend in his university’s career center about opportunities for former college and professional athletes in the sport of NASCAR, Williams spent 13 years as a pit crew member, carrying tires and being a jackman for drivers like Jeff Gordon and Chase Elliott. In 2005, when he first went over the wall, he was one of a few African-Americans at the racetrack. In fact, there had actually never been an African-American to pit a car at Hendrick Motorsports' nor had there been an African-American to win in the top series of NASCAR at that point.

Now retired from the pit crew, Dion is helping others follow in his tracks as he’s now the national recruiter for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program and broadcast host for the Motor Racing Network’s show “Crew Call.”

Interviews are a two-way street: be sure to ask the interviewer about training and development opportunities including leadership development programs and/or additional training once hired as an intern or employee. Training and development opportunities should be considered along with compensation when reviewing job offers.

3. Rather than worrying or complaining about your job not being ideal, focus on learning what you can where you are until you can move on to the next job.

4. Being able to multi-task and master time management is critical to having a successful career in the banking industry yet alone finding some balance in your professional and personal life altogether.

Born in Ghana and immigrated to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 15, Nana received both his Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architectural and Design Urbanism degrees from the University of Notre Dame, where he currently also sits on a Diversity Advisory Task Force.

Before going on to academia, Nana worked in private practice where he gained industry experience as a designer for several well-respected firms in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and NYC on a variety of high-profile international projects.

After teaching at SUNY Delhi where he developed the first Study Abroad Program based on the History and Architecture of the Italian Renaissance, Nana joined Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2015 as an Assistant Professor in the Master of Architecture program in the Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS). 1. Your conservative family may support you in ways you couldn’t imagine. Yes, that can even apply if you are a pastor’s kid and find yourself in an unplanned pregnancy.

2. No matter where you are on your journey, don’t be discouraged because you’re moving forward. Small beginnings can take you somewhere that you could never imagine. Karrah was on food stamps when she was a single mom in law school and kept her food stamp card to remind her how far God has brought her.

3. Even as an introvert, you can still be successful in a career that requires you to interact with the public as long as you manage your time and energy to ensure you have an opportunity to recharge yourself.

4. Self-care is extremely important and essential in helping you to manage stressful environments. Karrah shares some challenges she’s encountered while working at a predominately white institution (PWI) and how having a mentor has also helped her navigate complex situations.

5. Once you reach certain heights in your career, it’s always important to help bring up others as well.

Sylvester Chisom is a serial entrepreneur from St. Louis, Missouri (University City to be exact). The first generation in his family to attend college, Sylvester graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Biology.

While completing the coursework needed to pursue a career in dentistry, he saw immediate promise in his entrepreneurial ventures - including throwing massive parties with famous DJs and starting a car wash business with his best friend. At their college graduation, he and his business partner made a deal that they would commit to their business for a year to see if they would be successful. 1. Try to find an entry point into any career you're interested in as early as possible. Research careers online, seek volunteer opportunities, conduct informational interviews over the phone or invite people to coffee to learn more about their careers.

2. Every success or failure that you have creates another opportunity. You must take a step back to identify how you can leverage the opportunity you have into another one. If an opportunity doesn't go well, take the time to identify the lesson in the experience.

3. Never let anyone outwork you. As you work, be sure to do focused work as the compound effect works in your favor.

4. Always add value. Always leave any space you enter better than how you found it.

5. Learn how to appreciate delayed gratification. Because greatness takes some time to achieve, people oftentimes quit too early.

1. There's a big difference between learning in high school vs. in college. In high school, you are taught to regurgitate information; in college, you must take various pieces of information, refine it, and make it your own. Learning to learn like an adult can be challenging and takes some getting used to.

2. Even though a university may be prestigious, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be the best fit for your interests. However, though you may be able to get a much better education in your particular area of interest elsewhere, you also have to take into account the overall college experience you want to have as well.

3. Understanding how to be disciplined and manage your academics and social life while in college is critical, especially if you're planning to attend graduate or professional school afterward.

4. Having mentors is critical. Be sure to seek out mentors even if the mentoring relationship isn't established through an official mentoring program. Unofficial mentors can be just as helpful as mentors you meet through official mentoring programs.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a major in sociology, Napoleon shares his winding journey from moving back home with his mom after graduating from college for a few months before starting his career working various sales jobs. His sales jobs led him to a newly discovered career in search engine optimization (SEO) before an annoying and costly mishap with a package ordered from Amazon during a Black Friday sale encouraged him to create a solution to ensure packages would arrive safely to their rightful owners in the Philly area.

1. Even the least glamorous jobs help you develop valuable skillsets that can take you far in your career.

2. Persistence pays off. It can make the difference between getting the job or not getting the job.

3. Sometimes, you have to humble yourself and start over from the bottom. This is particularly common when transitioning to a new industry.

4. Having a different path is okay. We all get to where we want to go as long as we stay persistent. Honor your own journey.

In June 2018, Marli founded Crowe Career Services, a company with expertise in resume and cover letter writing, LinkedIn optimization, interview preparation, and career coaching.

1. Networking is extremely important and can make the difference between getting a job even if the other candidate’s skills aren’t as strong as yours.

2. It’s imperative to make sure that your resume is up-to-date and is filled with keywords pertaining to the job for which you’re applying.

3. Having an active and up-to-date LinkedIn page is a must. Not having one signals to employers that you aren’t serious about your job search.

4. Even if you don’t think you have all of the experience requested for the job, shoot your shot! Some jobs receive very few resumes; you might be keeping yourself from a job for which you would be a good candidate.

5. When you’re just starting your career, you will likely have to start from the bottom. Fret not, because you will get to your ideal job - even if it's in a different field than your college major - once you gain more job-related experience.

Today, we are joined by Jennifer Morgan. Jennifer was born and raised in a rural town just south of Atlanta, Georgia in Butts County. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 2005 with a degree in Advertising, she moved to Atlanta to begin her marketing career.

Following time at Yellowpages.com and a small start-up agency, she landed at Digitas where she worked on campaigns for IHG Hotels, SunTrust, Dunkin' Donuts, and Delta Air Lines. She's currently the Manager of Marketing at the High Museum of Art.

1. Most people don't like their first job, so don't worry if you don't like your first one either. Use it as a stepping stone to learn what you like and don't like in work environments, so you can move on to something that's a better fit.

2. Work internships or shadow people in the careers you're considering to get a sense of what the job truly is before you commit to a career path that you might not like.

3. Networking is critical! Most people are offered jobs by people they know. Jennifer learned about her current job before it was even posted while attending an AMA (American Marketing Association) networking event.

We are joined on this episode by Nancy Palmer. A double major in religion and philosophy from the University of Georgia, Nancy has certainly taken the road less traveled to a career making history. Like many college graduates, she was unsure exactly what she wanted to do after college, however, unbeknownst to her, string of jobs as a sommelier, restaurant consultant, and food and beverage writer paved the way to her current role as the Executive Director for the Georgia Craft Brewers’ Guild.

In her role, Nancy oversees fundraising and development initiatives that call upon her previous experience in the beverage industry and expertise in marketing, legal, regulatory, and legislative areas. She recently spearheaded a major legislative initiative to modernize tasting room laws for Georgia breweries allowing brewers to remain competitive in the Southeast. In 2018, she also became the first woman to win the Brewer’s Association’s Defense of the Industry Award.

What I love most about this episode is hearing how Nancy took a very indirect, adventurous path and made it her own. It’s my hope that this episode reaches recent college graduates who are unclear or uncertain about their future career paths and that, after listening to Nancy’s journey, they have some reassurance that their own journey will come together – and quite possibly even more beautiful than they can imagine.

Within the first generation in his family to grow up in America from Pakistan and with little knowledge about college or careers, he decided to major in an area where he thought he could immediately find a job after graduating college. After coming to the realization that the banking industry was not the right fit for his outgoing, fun-loving personality, he transitioned into the small and medium business (SMB) space where he worked with companies in various cities including Toronto, Buenos Aries, Los Angeles, and Boston.

Abid shares how important becoming self-aware has been for him as it led him to discover that he has ADHD. Developing self-awareness also made it easier for him to determine which jobs are better suited for his personality and play to his strengths as well as how to advocate for new opportunities that further highlight his unique skillsets.
