Welcome to Living A Life Through Books. This podcast is about a life-changing journey. The journey of starting, sustaining, and learning from the habit of reading.
SPOILER ALERT:
Today we are discussing an Oprah Book Club pick. The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese was recommended by a friend. He had done it for his book club. His thoughts are recorded towards the end when he joined us briefly.
This book is long and so is our discussion. It was good to hear everyone's point of view.

Wellness by Nathan Hill is a book that explores all elements of relationships. This book was very interesting to discuss because there was a lot to dissect and not everyone in the book club had the same opinions. That's what makes book club interesting. Hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did.

Longer episode I hr 30mins ish. One of our best book club episodes and unfortunately the audio quality wasn't up to par. We did it in-person and I'm still tweaking knobs etc. There's a constant static hum in the background but other than that, I think it turned out alright.

An alternate history anthology was put together (in a very short time) to benefit Ukraine. Sales from this project go towards a good cause and the editor David Flin, a couple of authors Alex Wallace and Mathew Kresal and Lena who helped in the organizational aspects, join me to discuss this project. Here are their brief bios and also please note this link to purchase this anthology. Your purchase goes towards a fabulous cause and you get a great alternate history book to read so win-win.
David Flin: Officially described by Mills & Boon as "unrealistic". After a lifetime of gathering stories the hard way, he’s turned his attention to story telling. It’s safer. He’s the owner of Sergeant Frosty Publications, which produces books for children and young adults.
Lena Worwood: Lena writes about British politics and horror with Sealion Press and can occasionally tell the two apart. She tweets at @sidewaysing
Matthew Kresal is an author, critic, and podcaster with many & varying interests. He is the winner of a 2020 Sidewise Award for his short story Moonshot. He tweets @KresalWrites
Alexander Wallace is a nerd on the internet best known for running Alternate History Online, the largest alternate history group on Facebook. He also helps run the Alternate Timelines forum and posts regularly on alternate history sites under the name SpanishSpy. When not being an alternate historian he is interested in various forms of science fiction, particularly late 19th-early 20th century science fiction (with a soft spot for H. G. Wells). He is a member of the Washington Science Fiction Society and has written articles for their Journal.

Today I'm talking with author Jayanthi Sankar. Shas been in several international literary festivals, including the APWT 2018 at Gold coast. She loves reading fiction as much as experimenting with writing fiction. Her previous novel, Misplaced Heads, was the Eyelands Book Awards 2020 final-list in Greece. It made its mark–as an outstanding postmodern historical fiction of the decade. Her highly acclaimed work ‘Dangling Gandhi’ was the winner in fiction: short story in 2020 International Book Award American book fest. The Literary Titan award was another international award it also bagged apart from shortlists and nominations. She lives in Singapore.

Just an FYI, I will be switching to in-person soon and my book club members who are out of town, I will still figure out a way to get them through Zoom or some other medium.

SPOILER ALERT FOR EPISODE
With book club, we discuss all aspects of the book, including the ending and plot twists. While this episode does not have a recorded audio spoiler alert, at the time of posting, please accept my apologies. Due to family issues and my health, I have been behind on this episode. This is our February book club and while I worked hard to edit, I was so focused on getting the episode out, I forgot to add the audio spoiler alert. I may go back and change the audio to add the spoiler alert, but for now, please accept my apologies.

This episode has the 10 books I finished this month. I'm having the episode come out on the 31st because I do not anticipate I will finish another book by the end of the month. It was a great month in general for my reading. I had varied genres: memoirs, dystopian sci-fi/fantasy, self-help, literary fiction, women's fiction, crime drama, psychological thriller. I'm hopeful that I can continue to vary my reading in the upcoming months.

The Fields by Erin Young (comes out Jan 25th, 2022) is a breakneckpolice procedural set in the Iowa Corn Belt and centers around a murder of a woman found in a cornfield, one whose implications extend far beyond the Midwest. But perhaps the most surprising twist of this story is off the page. Erin Young, the author isn't an Iowan or a tried and true Midwesterner, as one would expect, but rather an accomplished British historical novelist from Brighton, who under another pen name is a perennial Sunday Times bestselling author. She's been published in 9 languages and 22 countries, selling two million books worldwide.

The author joins us later in this episode. I do not tell my book club members when an author joins. I figure I would like to reward the members who do commit and come regularly. Although, getting an author on the book club can be tricky. And it's next to impossible to get the "famous" ones. Today's book is a YA, WWII, historic fiction set in Ukraine. Listen to our discussion and to the author's point of view.

I personally learned a lot from the book and of course from chatting with Mark. If you want to know more about the book or to order a copy, go to www.thecareertoolkitbook.com. There's even a free app that you can download. If you would like to reach Mark, just hit the contact tab on the site, and leave a message.

Hi folks,
It was brought to my attention that when I originally uploaded this episode, I mistakenly used the audio for the top 20 of 2020, episode. I went back to that episode, deleted the audio and re-uploaded this one. While Apple podcasts and Spotify has self-corrected for my original error, some other apps have not. So, I decided that I would just upload it again as a new episode. I want to thank everyone who brought it to my attention that the same episode was uploaded twice. THANK YOU and I sincerely apologize for my mistake and any inconvenience. I'm hopeful this fixes the issue and you should have all your episodes now, whether your app corrects for it or not.

This is the final part of the bookish comparison series. I discuss comparing the number of books we've read with others. I hope you don't fall into that trap.
It does take a lot of effort to produce these episodes. Your support would mean the world to me. How about Buy Me A Coffee, I would greatly appreciate it. I can use all the caffeine I can get. LOL. And THANK YOU.

Last book club of 2020. I would count this as a successful year. And a great book to end 2020 book club with. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig can wear several hats and can be filed in several genres, but most importantly, it's a feel good book about working through your regrets. At least, that's one thought. Listen in and let me know what you thought.
As I mentioned in the beginning, if you'd like to Buy Me A Coffee, I would greatly appreciate it. I can use all the caffeine I can get. LOL.

Mild spoiler alert. If you haven't studied history, this new history lesson will be eye opening. It will help you understand the racial divide better and help you confront the truth that you were not taught in schools about racism. We talk about the book, but we also talk about the current situation and what needs to be done. I know this book may be a tedious read, but I do believe it is should be required reading. As always when an episode gets too long, I have split it in two parts. This is part two.

Katie and I did a book bingo giveaway on Instagram that helped stretch our book reading and helped us grow through different genres. The bingo took us almost half a year to complete and I thought we could talk about our reading that we have accomplished already and what we want to get to for the rest of the year. It's always good to stop and re-evaluate and re-check your reading habits and what books you are working on. Try to be intentional. Katie can be reached on instagram at _katie.reads. Given our climate today, I hope we all are taking steps to grow past our racist tendencies and grow to accepting all colors of human beings. I created this list of black authors that I have read. I've read 13/15 books that I am mentioning. Also, before I posted this list, I consulted with @shellys_book_corner_ on instagram. She has her own list of diverse authors on her saved stories. Check it that out also. It is time we got more proactive and got "woke" about this issue. Books are a great way to get us there.

Phuc Tran's memoir Sigh, Gone was published April 21st by Flatiron Publishing (an imprint of MacMillan). I had the opportunity to talk to Phuc about his journey. He is a fascinating, down to earth individual that you can just chill and talk for hours with. I would highly recommend his memoir because of its message of growth and acceptance through the eyes of an immigrant. Brilliant!
Phuc Tran can be reached on Instagram by the tag @phucskywalker. As always, I can be reached through email at livingalifethroughbooks@gmail.com. Would love to hear your thoughts about this or any of my other episodes.

SPOILER ALERT: Welcome to our 4th book club of the year. Due to the novel Corona virus, we were doing this meeting through Zoom. We discussed Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. In attendance were Erin, Lindsay, Nicole, Sweta and myself. Sweta was off audio and video and she would send messages through Skype. I didn't turn the record on for the first 30 minutes and so we'll pick up directly in the middle of the conversation where Erin talks about a similar chain in St. Louis with the adoption of children.

Today we are talking with YA mystery author Farah Zaman. I found her first book Moon of Masarrah a very fun and charming read. If you have young adults in your family, I would recommend this book. I would think her books would be perfect for the 10-12 age group. This particular book is a 4 book series. The third book, The hour of the Oryx comes out next week on April 15. It was fun chatting with her and discussing issues such as #ownvoices because she's Muslim and I found her journey very interesting.

Tracking my ARC journey is tricky and is not extensive either but I've talked about what is going on with me. I would still recommend you listen to the other episodes on this podcast, namely S2E17. That's the gold standard for ARCs. Monique and I talked openly about ARCs and I learned a lot from her. Start with that one and then do the episode with Erica. That was the last 2 episodes and then you'll be ready for this one.

SPOILER ALERT. This is our book club episode were we discuss the controversial book American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. We had 4 people (including myself) in attendance. Erin, Lindsay, Monique from Canada and of course, myself. Monique was a guest in a previous episode and has a fabulous bookstagram account. Check her out at monique_reads. Erin has been on several episodes and she was recently on my episode discussing The Giver Quartet and I've spoken about Lindsay in previous episodes as my groupie. And I say that fondly! We had quite a sprightly discussion and this book is great to talk about our current immigrant crisis.
We discuss the #ownvoices issues and we mention names of #ownvoices books. I hope you enjoy this episode.
