I don't know how long I've known Michael, but every time we talk, he challenges the way I think about growth.
In this episode of Tom's World of Marketing, Michael and I sit down as he shares how he's helped a law firm go from a 50% close rate to 84% in just 90 days.
His message is simple:
You don't always need more leads. Sometimes you need a better process.
We talked about sales, leadership, scaling a firm, and why the best business owners learn to stop doing everything themselves.
If you're looking for practical growth advice, this is an episode worth witnessing.
"The legal funding industry has been predatory for decades."
So what happens when someone from inside the system decides to fix it?
On this episode of The World of Marketing, Tom Foster sits down with Jeremy Alters, former top trial lawyer turned founder of Claim Angel. He's on a mission to bring transparency to a broken industry.
The problem: A $5,000 advance turning into $30,000 owed
The solution: A marketplace model that forces competition, lowers rates, and protects clients
The result:
Jeremy is all about accountability, reinvention, and building something better after failure.
His approach?
"Time in lawsuits is power."
If you're interested in disrupting broken industries, turning setbacks into opportunities, building a product that actually solves a real problem, this one's for you.
The World of Marketing
Featuring Jeremy Alters
"For 30 years… I was guessing what a case was worth."
That's how Dirk Derrick describes his experience before he had data.
On this episode of The World of Marketing, Tom Foster sits down with Dirk Derrick, founder of Derrick Law Firm - who went from a one room practice to a 35 attorney powerhouse. But the real story? How he flipped the legal system on its head.
After decades of relying on "what insurance companies might pay", Dirk built something radically different:
The result?
"We use truth to flip leverage."
If you're still making decisions based on assumptions…
this one will challenge how you think about value, positioning, and leverage.

In the latest episode of Tom's World of Marketing, I sat down with Dawn Apuan, founder of Copy Queens, who went from ministry work and nonprofit leadership to becoming a powerhouse copywriter helping businesses generate sales—sometimes within 24 hours.
Her journey started with one powerful moment.
After being told she had to put her daughter in daycare and questioning her future, Dawn made a decision: "I will figure this out." That decision led her into digital marketing… and eventually to mastering the psychology behind persuasive copy.
Insights she shared:
Great marketing triggers five key neurochemicals in the brain:
When your message follows that sequence, your audience naturally moves toward action. We also talk about:
And one wild example:
A client changed just two elements on a sales page and increased revenue from $45K to $450K.
Listen to the full episode of Tom's World of Marketing to discover how better messaging can transform your marketing results.
And for thousands of patients, that simple truth changes everything. On this episode of Tom's World of Marketing, Tom Foster sits down with Dr. Eric Williams, a board-certified plastic & reconstructive surgeon specializing in peripheral nerve surgery—one of the most complex and misunderstood areas of medicine.
Dr. Williams shares powerful stories of patients who spent years—sometimes decades—living with chronic pain, told repeatedly that "nothing could be done"… until the right specialist looked at the problem through a different lens.
This episode is more than just medicine—it's about education, mindset, and marketing: ✔ Why many patients fall through the cracks ✔ How specialized expertise changes outcomes ✔ Why great medicine needs great marketing to reach the people who need it most
If you or someone you know has been told to "just live with the pain," this conversation might change how you think about what's possible.

What happens when a top-tier attorney thinks like a marketer?
On the latest episode of Tom's World of Marketing, I sat down with Peter Hoppenfeld — the "marketer who happens to be a lawyer" behind some of the biggest names in direct response and info marketing.
Peter has spent 40+ years helping entrepreneurs, health professionals, and thought leaders grow without crossing legal lines — and in this conversation, he breaks down what actually works.
In this episode, we cover:
Why strategy comes before lawyering
"There's no shortcut to smart. The most effective marketing has always been the trusted advisor."
If you're a lawyer, doctor, consultant, or expert trying to grow your practice without risking your license or reputation, then this episode is a must-watch.

In the latest episode of The World of Marketing, Tom Foster sits down with Eiman Bassam, Founder & CEO of ESB Advertising, to break down how streaming TV advertising has evolved—and why lawyers and doctors can no longer afford to treat TV as a "branding-only" channel.
This conversation challenges one of the biggest assumptions in marketing: that TV can't be measured.
In this episode, you'll learn:
If you've ever questioned whether streaming TV advertising really works - or struggled to connect ad spend to real revenue - this is a conversation worth your time.

No law firm or podiatrist is the same. Each business requires a different approach to marketing and a unique marketing mix. If a marketer tells you a strategy is one-size-fits-all, then it’s time to find another marketer. What works for one practice utilizing its own resources in its specific market is surely different than what works for your mix of reputation, resources, and market size. Your practice’s growth is its own, and it’s time to handle it that way! Absorb how you can approach your marketing by watching or listening to Alexander’s presentation during this episode.

Dr. Nathan Ivey comes from the Pacific Northwest and is from a family of 10. He got his podiatry degree from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1999. Eventually, the lack of sun got to him and his wife, so they uprooted and moved down to New Mexico, where he has been in practice ever since. His specialty is in rearfoot and ankle reconstruction, but he is also adept at using orthotics to correct issues that would otherwise require surgery. He is a business owner who is familiar with the stresses and obstacles involved in running a practice and taking over a practice. Over the years, he has built a sense of resiliency into his entrepreneurial style—something we can all learn from.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a podiatrist, or any entrepreneur for that matter, that has a story quite like Dr. Nathan Ivey’s. His practice has been forged out of the trials and tribulations of moving several states away, taking over a practice, holding his own against hospitals, and actually having to fly across New Mexico to commute between two practices. His story is one of legend—and, like many legends, we can learn a lesson or two from it. This episode will explore the concepts of the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship, marketing, and life in general.

Kenneth Berger (Kenny to friends) started The Law Offices of Kenneth Berger in Columbia, South Carolina, when he was just 29 years old. Most people said he was too young, and they doubted his future success. Many years later, though, he has proven all those naysayers wrong.
Single-handedly, Kenny has built a personal injury firm that commands the respect of PI lawyers nationwide. Just this year, Kenny faced down a major corporation and won a settlement of $26 million for his client. The victim’s family found The Berger Law Firm online through a specific, long-tail keyword search while hunting for a local burn injury lawyer. Kenny and Tom go into detail as to why crafting web content that focuses on long-tail keywords outperforms content written for short-tail keywords. The difference is shocking. With the Olympics coming up, we took this week to re-release one of our favorite episodes featuring Attorney Matt Kaiser of Global Sports Advocates!
Matthew D. Kaiser is an international sports attorney who works with athletes and sports groups. He handles matters related to doping, misconduct, ineligibility, governance issues, and generally represents athletes at the highest level. He is an influential member of the Global Sports Advocates (GSA) team in Portland, Maine, and has been a full-time sports attorney since 2017. Before working at GSA, he was a student in the International Sports Law Master’s program at the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) based in Madrid, Spain.
Here’s a Glimpse of What You’ll Learn * Standards of Evaluation for Performance Enhancing Drugs * Nuances in Advocating for Athletes Following Positive Drug Test Results * GSA's Biggest Victories in the Sports Law Space * A Sports Law Attorney's Take on a High-Profile Doping Case * Staying Up to Date With Changes in the World Anti-Doping Code * What It's Like Working With Global Sports Advocates * The Elements of Advising Athletes in the Digital Space
Understanding all elements of a successful doping case takes patience, research, unrelenting determination, and a strong moral compass. Matt's mentor, Paul Greene, says, "Even if there's a 0.001% chance of winning the case, there's still a chance and you can find that one slim corridor to run through and save the client. It's never over until it's actually over." Matt holds this principle as a guiding light in even his toughest cases, showing the world that GSA is the team any athlete would want when unfairly facing a potentially career-ending situation.

This week, we are releasing a cleaned-up cut for one of our favorite episodes, which came out around this time last year. Enjoy Tom's conversation with Jason Abraham, the Owner and VP of the largest personal injury law firm in the Midwest!
Jason Abraham is the Owner and Vice President of Hupy and Abraham, S.C., an award-winning personal injury law firm. As a personal injury attorney, Jason has 30 years of experience in the legal field, earning numerous awards for his work. Jason earned a Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School in 1992 and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1989.
Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn * Jason Abraham talks about his law firm’s marketing strategies through the years * The benefits of using different marketing channels * Jason shares his recipe for long-term success * Finding an efficient philosophy for maintaining a perfect work ethic * Jason discusses marketing strategies in a team dynamic
When considering your marketing approach, it’s important to have a clear goal in mind. Even though the path may not always be clear, success can still be achieved by understanding the key components of leading marketing strategies.
Some people might arrange these components in a list and call it a recipe, but to Jason Abraham, long-term success is much more than that. Developing mental fortitude is a crucial step toward planning for your business growth. As you are set on the “big picture,” it’s important to understand the challenges that come before and after success, and how to overcome them.
In this episode of The World of Marketing Podcast, Tom Foster Jr. is joined by Jason Abraham, personal injury lawyer, Owner, and Vice President of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. They talk about the evolution of marketing strategies, how utilizing marketing channels can present different opportunities, realistic approaches for long-term success, and how to be creative in a marketing team environment.

How do you find the true value of potential cases right off the bat? This was a question unanswered until Dirk Derrick came to the field. He changed the landscape by answering that and other questions that long went unanswered in the ecosystem of personal injury law. For example, just look at what Dirk’s firm claims:
“The DLF focuses on personal injury law exclusively. Everything we do for our clients is to obtain the true value of the case faster. This involves working at night with focus groups to determine the community’s thoughts on facts, issues, and laws concerning specific cases and then using those findings to obtain the real value of the case, often without the need for litigation.”
Marketing like this, and resolving an age-old debate within his clientbase, brought Dirk to the success he sees today. Check out the episode to hear how it happened. And, if you’re looking for ways you can transform your marketing, try this.

One thing that’s clearly true to life is that we learn as we go. Twenty years ago, both Tom and Chris were coding websites in Dreamweaver. Now, in this era of web marketing, they both weave dreams in new ways. What they’ve learned for sure is that web marketing isn’t as simple as building a website and calling it a day. There is an art and a science to it, and it requires continuous effort that should not be ignored.
The key to your success is making things easy for you. That’s a goal Tom and Chris share, and it’s something they’ve learned over years of experience.
That’s also why DSS was built by Tom’s own hands, but has been extensively refined to adapt to the internet today. Learn more about what DSS can do for you here.

There are people out there who have millions of followers on social media. They're also making millions of dollars, all while doing nearly the same things you're doing—well, almost. They're flying first class and never looking back. If you want to achieve that level of success, you have to step back and recognize some important truths.
Newsflash—IT'S ACTUALLY NOT DIFFICULT. It begins with an inward look toward what is important. It starts with you, your family, and getting your priorities straight. Only then can you look outward and determine the steps you need to take to become the successful self you know you can be.
Kim Walsh Phillips has walked that path, and she's honored us this week with her story on how she made it—and she's telling you how you can too.
It's not every day a business owner and self-marketer ends up influencing a million followers, but Kim has earned it. I'm not one to overstate the facts, and as a marketer myself with similar goals, her message speaks to me. I think it will speak to you, too. After all, we're in this together as we strive toward success and true inner meaning in what we do.

My best buddy and mentor, Ben Glass, texted me one Saturday morning with a link to a podcast called Built to Sell Radio. They were interviewing the owner of a marketing company and compared his firm to FWM. I was intrigued and immediately tuned in and headed out on my 3-miler walk. As I listened, I was blown away by the similarities between us.
So, am I seeing double or what? Wesley Mathews is another entrepreneur who grew his company, High Level Marketing, out of nothing and made it big. Wesley changed the game when he decided to create websites using his own proprietary CMS—and he built an entire business that he eventually sold.
That's smart business, so I invited him to be a guest on my podcast to tell us how he did it. It’s a fascinating story, and it will provide insight into how you might do the same thing with your business. We can all learn a lot from Wesley.
I also feel like I made a friend for life!

I’m a fan of the fantastic clients that Great Legal Marketing has referred to FWM over the many years I’ve known Ben Glass & Charley Mann. Ben and I started our respective companies together and have grown them like partners over the years. We have created, by accident, a great community of lawyers that are both GLM & FWM clients. Those of you who are part of that know what I mean. GLM provides lawyers that own a law firm with an enormous amount of fundamental, foundational, essential knowledge—logistics, operations, processes, marketing, and coaching. FWM is the “toolbox” and digital marketing aspect of the relationship.
So I was happy to have Charley Mann as my guest on the World of Marketing! He’s my buddy— we always have a good time, and this was no different. Watch or listen to Charley and I discuss GLM’s new “Hero & Icon” program that coaches lawyers out of the trench they are in now to the success model they can be in, like many others in the GLM Hero & Icon program.

Marketing is a mix of art and science, and you have to learn how to balance both to be successful. Data is very helpful in determining what’s working and what isn’t, but the client relationships you develop are critical to maintaining a sustainable practice.
The world of marketing is constantly changing, so you need to test and measure the effectiveness of your strategy on a regular basis. Mischelle Davis, the wife of Seattle Attorney Chris Davis, has been managing her husband’s marketing for 13 years. Mischelle and Tom discussed how “you have to be willing to invest in failure” if you want to take your business to the next level.
Mischelle believes a written marketing plan and those you partner with are essential factors for long-term success. Are you willing to try new things and always ask questions? Find out how Mischelle’s partnership with FWM has energized Davis Law Group’s marketing and how they avoid complacency.
Lawyers who focus on niche practice areas know that building relationships with other attorneys is critical to their success. Referrals connect lawyers and result in putting cases in the right hands.
If you let others know the types of cases you specialize in and keep reminding them of that through your marketing, you set yourself up for potential success. Virginia Attorney Kevin Mottley recently settled a seven-figure traumatic brain injury case, which came to him through a referral from a law school classmate. Kevin and Tom talked about his love of these challenging cases, and how he keeps his referral sources in the loop throughout the process.
Kevin is currently developing systems for brain injury litigation and writing a book about the mistakes lawyers make when they refer cases. How do you make sure other lawyers know your name and the types of cases you handle? Find out how Kevin nurtures his referral relationships to keep growing his business.
Just like doctors and lawyers, other small businesses need to find ways to differentiate themselves and stand out in their field. An excellent way to achieve this is by finding a niche market to specialize in and target with your marketing.
Back in 2008, there wasn’t a live chat option specifically for lawyers, and Ngage Live Chat started specializing in the field. Vice President Alex Hambrick says chat is a way for potential clients to speak with a live person and find validation for the problem they are seeking help for. Alex and Tom discussed the stigma many lawyers still have about using live chat, and why he believes more of them should be willing to use chat as a conversion tool for their firms.
Ngage is continuously analyzing the data they gather from chats and identifying ways to improve this process for their clients. How do you make sure you’re giving your clients the best experience possible? Find out why Alex believes that constantly evaluating their processes keeps Ngage on the cutting edge in their market.
No matter what type of business you run, relationships matter. If you want clients to keep returning to your business and referring you to others, you need to focus on what makes them happy.
Passion and enthusiasm play a significant role in attracting and retaining clients. Todd Baldwin, owner of WT Clothiers, uses his lifelong love of clothing to help others look and feel better about themselves. Todd and Tom talked about how he doesn’t have to chase business anymore because of the success of his studio and his website.
Todd likes to say, “Come for the clothes, stay for the entertainment” because he knows his success lies in making the customer happy. What do you do to make your clients feel valued? Find out how Todd has found success in focusing on the people, not the clothes.
As you start your career, you pack in all the experiences you can to make yourself a more valuable employee. You might switch firms along the way, but you’re always learning and becoming more confident in your skills.
But, life doesn’t always go the way you planned, and you may find yourself forced to make a life-changing career decision. Virginia Attorney Kevin Mottley used that turning point to open his own firm specializing in brain injury cases. Kevin and Tom talked about how he started his firm from scratch, and why he recommends other lawyers do the same if they have that urge.
Kevin still has a fire in his belly for trying cases, and his clients know how passionate he is about their stories. What tactics do you use to juggle everything in your firm, and still make your clients feel important? Find out how Kevin manages his firm while still staying calm as he prepares for very consuming trials.
Where you come from and how you grew up often influence your path in life. You either embrace it and let it guide you or go in a completely different direction.
Being exposed to two different cultures gives you a unique perspective, as well as the opportunity to serve a niche market. California attorney Antonio Gastélum and his wife, María Elia, have built a firm that focuses on helping Latin Americans with all of their international estate planning and business needs. Antonio and Tom talked about how each family is different, and how his firm takes a personal approach to learn the best ways to protect his clients.
Antonio’s tagline is “We speak your culture,” and his primary website and both of his books are written in Spanish. What extra things do you do to help your clients trust you and feel comfortable? Find out how Antonio’s personal approach strengthens his relationships and leads to more referrals.
In the game of life, the experiences you have early on can shape how you see the world. It is up to you to decide how you use what you have learned moving forward.
It doesn’t matter where you start out, if you put in the hard work and dedication, you can do anything you want. Washington Redskins legend Brian Mitchell grew up in Louisiana, and was the youngest of seven children. He learned the value of working hard from the example set by his father. Brian and Tom talked about how he grew up feeling like the richest person in the world because he was loved and he never wanted for anything.
Brian uses the lessons he learned throughout his life to inspire others by speaking to them about the power of dedication, consistency, and believing in yourself. What life lessons could you use to help others? Find out how Brian bases his life off of heart, and how he continues to find success in whatever he does.
Throughout your professional life, you have certain experiences that shape how you approach situations and what direction you take with your career. It also helps if you have a clear idea of what’s most important to you, and how to go after it.
For some, it’s pretty simple to choose what their end goal is, but the path isn’t always clearly defined. Kansas City Attorney Kevin McManus has always liked the idea of helping people, whether it be through practicing law or in his political career. Kevin and Tom talked about how developing the right mindset can lead to designing the life you really want to live.
Kevin uses community marketing, including handwritten notes, to connect with people and let them know he truly cares. What personal things do you do to connect with your community and clients? Find out how Kevin’s public service and community involvement have strengthened his brand.
When you’re planning for your future, reality and what you envisioned it to be are sometimes quite different. You might have all these great ideas, but when it comes down to it, luck and opportunity are what really work.
It’s really about planning ahead and taking what life hands you, and then adapting to make your practice what you want it to be. Florida Attorney Adam Rossen took advantage of criminal defense opportunities in law school to get a leg up on his classmates. Adam and Tom talked about how he secured speaking opportunities at traffic court and counselor conferences to help educate others, but to also bring business into his firm.
Adam believes in giving his clients a Ritz Carlton experience, and making sure they know they are cared about and valued. What do you do differently to make sure your past clients are referring others to your firm? Find out how Adam’s marketing efforts have led to an increase in referrals and reviews.
As your career progresses, you get a feel for what you like to do and don’t like to do. You also learn what you would do differently if you went out on your own.
So, you take the leap and start your own firm, but then you realize you really aren’t sure how you’re going to make money. Florida Attorney AJ Yolofsky knew litigation wasn’t at the top of his favorites list, so he decided to go into estate planning and corporate law. AJ and Tom talked about how he has developed his marketing and runs his business based on principles he learned in the Marines.
AJ stresses education at every level and demands excellence at every level. Have you been providing your team with everything they need to succeed? Find out how AJ and his team are constantly working to be better than they were yesterday.

When you start your own business, sometimes you dabble in a little bit of everything to make ends meet. Then, something happens in your personal life, and you decide to switch directions.
It takes dedication and the willingness to learn something new. Massachusetts Attorney Mike Monteforte immersed himself in learning all about estate planning and elder care. He originally changed his focus to help his grandparents, but then realized there was a real need for this niche in his area. Mike and Tom talked about how difficult it is to market estate planning to people and the creative ideas that have helped him find success.
Mike believes people really relate to personal stories and that’s what they want to hear. What unique ideas can you use to take your marketing to the next level? Find out what worked for Mike and how those strategies can work for you.
No matter what your goals are, discipline is required to achieve them. For some, that training starts at a young age and is practiced by the whole family.
Taking those skills and applying them in another field is what sets people up for success. Ohio Attorney Ed Littlejohn started out writing marketing copy for his dad’s martial arts gym. He has adapted those skills, along with the coaching of Dan Kennedy and Ben Glass, to create a thriving estate planning business. Ed and Tom talked about how his direct mail campaigns have led to a boom in business.
Ed lives by the philosophy of his dad, “givers gain.” Find out how sharing your knowledge and focusing on education based marketing can work for you.
You might start down one professional path, thinking you know what you’ll be doing for the rest of your life. But, sometimes you decide to take a detour and really follow your passion.
The courage to go in a different direction can bring new success and make life more fulfilling. Nancy Erickson went from the high-tech corporate world to running a book coaching and publishing business. Tom and Nancy talked about how everyone has a story to tell, but it just may take a little coaching to tell it.
Nancy uses her passion for writing to help other professionals turn their stories into books. Find out how she can help you attract a following, establish you as an expert, and increase your credibility.
When you’re running a business, no matter what size, there is one key element you should focus on. In everything you do, whether it’s marketing or content, put your client first.
You have to be able to put yourself in your client’s shoes. If you care, and do right by your customer, everything else will work out. Texas Attorney Bill Voss owns and runs a variety of businesses, from a property insurance claim law firm to a marketplace that sells guns and ammo. Bill and Tom talked about how Bill runs all of his businesses with this community-driven and client focus.
Bill uses his drive and passion to help people to shape how he does business. Find out how adopting his approach and mindset can benefit you.
Running a business is full of tough choices, which can ultimately lead to success or failure. Making sure you hire the right people to meet your goals is a critical piece of the puzzle.
You have to establish goals for your business, and make sure all of your team members buy into those goals. Jay Henderson has developed a test employers can use to measure how people think and make decisions. Tom talked with Jay about how his test helps leaders learn more about their potential employees, and how to focus their teams to be more efficient and productive.
Jay helps Tom evaluate all of his potential employees. Find out how you can use Jay’s test to motivate your team and get them more involved in reaching your goals.

Attorney Dave Frees believes real wealth comes from retaining relationships and valuing them. Tom and Dave discuss how direct mail, videos, and nurturing your list can lead to your success.
Just because you start small, doesn’t mean you have to stay that way. If you adapt a growth plan, consistently follow it, and stay on course, the possibilities are endless. South Dakota Attorney Scott Swier started with an office in a town with 600 people, a secretary, and some shag carpet. After he established his practice, he searched the Internet for marketing help. He found Great Legal Marketing, which led him to us.
After years of surging success, Tom talked with Scott and his office manager, Sara, about how following the principles of GLM, writing readable content, and using community marketing and social media have become their “pillars of success.” Instead of just one office, Scott now has five locations with nine lawyers and multiple practice areas, and he won Marketer of the Year at GLM’s 2017 Summit. Learn how you can use these tools and principles to grow your practice.
If you own your own business, you know that relationship marketing is one of the most important things you should be doing. It's all about shared interests and connecting with people on a personal level, not just on a professional one.
Life is a roller coaster, and no one knows that better than Dr. Marybeth Crane. She is a small-town girl from Rhode Island, who worked hard to combine her interests with the podiatry business she now runs in Texas. She started running competitively in 1979, and she uses those experiences to connect with her patients and other professionals in her community. Tom talked with Marybeth about her strategies and her road to success.
Marybeth was the keynote speaker at the Top Practices Summit in San Antonio this year. She has been through it all, and she knows what it takes to overcome obstacles and run a thriving business.
