When it comes to workplace equity and diversity, a lot of focus is given to hiring โthe best person for the jobโ or hiring โtop talentโ or โthe best fitโ and so on. Researchers and equity advocates have shown that these frameworks are based on fallacious assumptions and are riddled with biases. In this article, I explain how colorism is a significant part of discrimination and inequality in recruiting and hiring.

A common and longstanding attitude among many prominent and historic anti-racist leaders, activists, scholars, and practitioners is that colorism is a trivial distraction compared to racism. Many believe that focusing on race alone is necessary and sufficient to dismantle white-supremacist systems of oppression. In this live stream, I challenge that assumption.

After my analysis of mothers and colorism last week and my earlier discussions of fathers and families, I want to step beyond analysis and commentary and speak more directly to strategies for breaking generational cycles of colorism.
This week I'm discussing the 5 important environments parents and guardians must curate and maintain in order to help stop the cycle of colorism within their families and among the larger society. Not only do parents care for these environments themselves, they also teach their children how to create and care for these environments too.

I'm calling this blog post "Mothers and Colorism: Expanded Edition" because this is an update and expansion on the original post written a decade ago. My objective this time around is still to explain some of the more common ways that mothers perpetuate colorism within their families. I also had a more recent discussion on colorist fathers, but there I focused specifically on their impact on daughters. Today I want to speak more broadly to the mother's influence on children across the gender spectrum.

It's one thing to argue that skin color preference is socially conditioned. It's another thing to clarify why that matters. I wrote a post years ago called "Preference or Prejudice" that I want to cite and expound on this week. But I want to put greater focus on what's next once we understand the roots of those preferences.

I'm continuing the conversation I started last week (but that's really been a lifetime coming). I talked about being a single dark-skinned Black girl, reflecting mainly on my childhood and young adulthood context. Today I want to reflect more on my adult life, being a single dark skinned Black woman. Where we at now??

I've been wanting to talk about being a single, dark-skinned girl for awhile now, but I struggled to organize my thoughts on the topic and pinpoint what exactly I had to say about it. It's also a vulnerable topic for me, and I wasn't sure I was ready to publicly engage this subject, even though I've skimmed the surface a bit in my recent content. So this week, I'm simply going to start. I'm not putting any pressure on myself to have some kind of manifesto or profound takeaways. I'll simply start the conversation. And where I want to start is by reflecting on my girlhood and young adulthood.

This week's conversation was partly inspired by a Thursday Thoughts newsletter I wrote awhile back. Someone asked me during a live stream: "How are you so confident?" Or something along those lines. I pondered it for a bit, and came to an interesting conclusion. I'm probably not the first person to think of it this way, but I'm sharing it here based on my personal experience as a potential pathway to greater confidence for dark skin folks. It can really apply to anyone, but I'm speaking specifically and directly to my dark-skinned siblings.

Healing from colorism doesn't just happen and it doesn't just happen over night. Think of colorism healing less as a destination that you get to or a task you complete, and think of it more as change in your everyday habits or a change in your lifestyle.

Continuing from last week's conversation about the impact of colorism on self-esteem for dark-skinned girls and women, I'm spending the next few weeks, all of February, to elaborate on cultivating self love for dark-skinned women and girls. The past two weeks, I've discussed colorism as explicit prejudice and colorism as implicit bias. This week, I want to talk about the impact of colorism on self esteem for dark skin girls.
We most often talk about bias and prejudice as it pertains to our feelings about other people. But what happens when we internalize colorism and direct those prejudices and biases against ourselves?
I'll also touch a bit on self-image, which has a lot to do with how you see yourself and your beliefs about how other people see you.
Some of what I share here will be a review of a previous post on internalized colorism.

Are you colorist and don't even know it? Last week we discussed the explicit prejudice of colorism. Building on that conversation, let's consider colorism as implicit bias.

Sometimes, colorism is very subtle. Other times, it's glaring us in the face. That's when colorism is expressed as an explicit prejudice. I want to start with identifying and understanding the explicit prejudice of colorism because 1) it's easy for people just learning about this issue, and 2) we must remember that many people consciously choose colorism.

Hey Podcast Fam! Due to the nature of this week's live, I could not use my microphone to record me and the guest, so for the most consistent audio quality between both of us, I'm using the audio pulled from the video file. My apologies for a less polished audio this week. It's still very much worth your time!!!
Bio: Viva (Satirella) is a fourth year student at Cornell University who has a keen interest in social inequalities with a focus on colorism and the rise of skin bleaching products. Growing up in Ghana, West Africa, she noticed the differential treatment between dark skinned individuals like herself and their lighter skinned counterparts. Her tiktok platform seeks to bring awareness to this issue which many Africans deny or overlook, and has received some backlash as a result. Nonetheless, as she likes to say โ I have a mouth on me, and I am not afraid to use it!โ She comes for anyone who comes at her sideways, and does not allow anyone to stop her from speaking her truth!

This week's topic was inspired by the most current movie being called out for colorism, The Harder They Fall, because the light-skinned, mixed-race actress Zazie Beetz was cast to play Stagecoach Mary (Mary Fields), a very dark-skinned woman who was the first woman to deliver U.S. mail. The more I learn about Mary Fields, the more obvious it becomes that the colorism in The Harder They Fall is blatant disrespect of this woman's legacy. This portrayal is betrayal.ย

How can we do this in a formalized manner? and Q2: Hi, your thoughts on skin bleaching in regards to colorism? . And is there a difference between skin lightening and skin bleaching

This week I went Q&A Style. I try to give my honest answers to audience questions about colorism with minimal prep beforehand. So the answers are not only honest, they're also raw. This week's questions about colorism include:ย
โ--What advice do you have for dark-skinned mothers raising biracial children?ย
โ--How can I address discrimination against dark-skinned people without it seeming like I'm against light-skinned people?ย
โ--Colorism or racism--which is more harmful to Black people?ย
โ--How can I identify colorist practices in a company that I'm applying to work for?

This Live Wednesday Writing Workshop was inspired by my upcoming 35th birthday. We look back, look forward, and look within.
--- I launched Colorism Healing to raise critical awareness about #colorism by providing a hub of information and resources and to facilitate solutions and healing through creative and critical work.
--- This initiative is unique because it has always focused on healing, self-care, and reconciliation, especially for black girls, black women, and other girls and women of color.
--- My unpopular opinion, though, is that colorism affects all people regardless of their complexion, race, ethnicity, gender, or class. Therefore, everyone is responsible for helping to address the problem. However, I explain how it effects people quite differently based on those varying factors. Some people disproportionately benefit from this system and others are systemically marginalized. Some are zealous perpetrators while others are obliviously complicit.

In this recording of the Live Wednesday Writing Workshop, we explore the power of metaphors in shaping our views of reality and, of course, for healing.
--- As part of this mission, Iโve launched several initiatives, such as the Colorism Healing Writing Contest, and I invite you to explore more via the links below.

I thought it'd be a great time to reflect on self-care practices that go beyond prevention and that allow us to express joy and love for our bodies. My original idea was to share practical ways to "love the skin you're in." Since LOVE is a noun and a verb, we can have feelings and acts of love toward our skin, hair, face, and body overall. Here are 5 of my favorite acts of love toward my body.

I started Colorism Healing in 2013 with a blog, and since then it's grown into an international initiative which includes: writing contests, anthologies and books, workbooks, workshops, training, professional development, video interview series, live panel discussions and more. Colorism Healing inspired me to get my doctorate, and I recently taught my first university course on colorism called #Melanin: International Perspectives on Skin Tone. But how did I get here. And why? What drives me to do this work?
In this video, I delve into my origin story, the reason I finally broke my silence about colorism and chose to speak publicly about it for the first time. I talk about my multicolored family, bullying in school, and the fear that kept me in silence for years.

--- In a world saturated by antiblackness, racism, and white supremacy we are conditioned to dislike a natural black aesthetic. We are conditioned to prefer a more white, European, or simply nonblack aesthetic. This episode is all about analyzing the antiblackness that drives much of our contemporary aesthetic "preferences."

--- In this episode I discuss how important it is to improve the language we use to talk about and to ourselves. Positive affirmations have been a major part of my mental health, self-care, and healing journey. African American women are often exposed to negative feedback, so it's especially important for us to learn to affirm ourselves when our broader culture does not, and often disparages us. #PositiveAffirmations

We all have those iconic role models whose words, art, and revolutionary lives shape who we are and what we do today. This is a (slightly chronological) list of 8 historic figures who deeply influenced my colorism healing journey during my adolescence and as I was coming into young adulthood. It features the likes of Malcolm X, Alice Walker, Gwendolyn Brooks, and more. A great video for Black History Month or just for any random day of the year! The list is by no means meant to be comprehensive, so let me know in the comments who inspired or informed you about colorism.

--- In this episode I discuss the benefits of journaling and practicing introspection. Journaling is not just great for introspection, it's also a great way to collect ideas, problem solve, make plans, set goals, and more. This practice has been an important part of my self-care routine. As African Americans, we are still working to overcome stigmas about mental health, therapy, and counseling, so starting a journaling practice can be a great place to start.

Men on Colorism is A Video Series that focuses on the stories and perspectives of men on the subject of #colorism and healing. Featured in this clip: Quentin, a college student who talks about colorism's roots in slavery, the black diaspora, and how men must acknowledge the issue. J'Ara (Jeremiah), 22- talks about his mother's comments, his dark-skinned father's light-skinned green-eyed brown-haired twin, why men talk about colorism less often than women, growing to feel comfortable in his own skin, being too brown to be light-skinned and too brown to be dark-skinned. JC, 31. He talks about perceiving his own skin tone as lighter than it actually was; how "red bone" was a term used in his high school and that light skinned girls were preferred in dating; the need to talk about colorism and learn about it, especially for leaders. John, 20- explains his understanding about colorism, his personal experiences of it, how he has been complicit, teasing in school, maturing past skin tone stereotypes. Anthony, age 37, who talks about being happy with his complexion.

Therefore, everyone is responsible for helping to address the problem. However, I explain how it effects people quite differently based on those varying factors. Some people disproportionately benefit from this system and others are systemically marginalized. Some are zealous perpetrators while others are unwillingly complicit.
--- As part of this mission, Iโve launched several initiatives, such as the Colorism Healing Writing Contest, and I invite you to explore more via the links below.

In this special episode I interview my mother Janice Ledet. Since I started this work many years ago, she has told me a story about myself as a little girl that I have no recollection of. But that story reveals so much about me and why I do the work I do. I made this episode for all the mothers out there who want to help their children respond in healthy ways to colorism.
