There are three types of known “telehealth players” and only two will prevail in the future. The first type are credible known entities like Cleveland Clinic, UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health, or Amazon Care, which would be their online arm. The second type will be telehealth solutions that broker availability of different services between brands. The third type – and the one that won’t work – is the standalone solution. From a patient standpoint, more credibility is needed to use these services. Smart market players in the telehealth industry anticipate future trends and make sure business focuses on several consumer problems, not one.
Further, there are concerns about equitable access to telehealth services, particularly for video telehealth – something HCPs and telehealth companies should think about as telehealth becomes a long-term/permanent solution. Basic technological barriers like lack of broadband access, digital literacy, social isolation, disparities in technology/device ownership prevent patients from engaging with their providers via telehealth. These barriers have disproportionate impacts across different populations. Additionally, social data gaps – low technology for certain sub-populations indicates minimal data availability.

These tests include saccade tests, anti-saccade tests, and smooth pursuit tasks. Saccades are rapid eye movements that shift the center of gaze from one part of the visual field to another.Examining saccades gauges the patient’s ability to perform this function in a single, rapid movement, while anti-saccade tests measure a patient’s ability to suppress those reflexive movements. Smooth pursuit tasks test a patient’s ability to follow an object smoothly while keeping that object in full view. It is considered voluntary, and a patient’s inability to perform well in them may point to deeper issues inside the brain.In addition, pupillary responses can point to issues with emotional response or a brain’s cognitive load. Stephen Konya joined the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as the Senior Innovation Strategist for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). In addition to developing the Agency’s external and internal innovation strategy, he also serves as a key liaison for innovation related projects and challenges, specifically targeting engagement opportunities with the healthcare startup and investor communities. In this role, Mr. Konya has led several key ONC projects, including the national Health IT Playbook, the ONC Patient Engagement Playbook for Providers, the SMART App Gallery, the FHIR at Scale Taskforce (FAST) Initiative, and is a founding Co-Chair of the Together.Health Collaborative.
Prior to his position with the Federal Government, he served concurrently as Chief of Staff, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Results Officer for the Illinois Department of Public Health. Where, in addition to many other responsibilities, he was tasked with leading the agency's Innovation and Open Data strategy, and was appointed Chair of the Open Data sub-committee under the IL Alliance for Health, a CMMI State Innovation Model (SIM) planning grant. Other assignments included being appointed to the IL Commission on the Elimination of Poverty, and Co-Chair of the Illinois Workforce Investment Board’s (IWIB) Healthcare Taskforce.

There are three types of known “telehealth players” and only two will prevail in the future. The first type are credible known entities like Cleveland Clinic, UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health, or Amazon Care, which would be their online arm. The second type will be telehealth solutions that broker availability of different services between brands. The third type – and the one that won’t work – is the standalone solution. From a patient standpoint, more credibility is needed to use these services. Smart market players in the telehealth industry anticipate future trends and make sure business focuses on several consumer problems, not one.
Further, there are concerns about equitable access to telehealth services, particularly for video telehealth – something HCPs and telehealth companies should think about as telehealth becomes a long-term/permanent solution. Basic technological barriers like lack of broadband access, digital literacy, social isolation, disparities in technology/device ownership prevent patients from engaging with their providers via telehealth. These barriers have disproportionate impacts across different populations. Additionally, social data gaps – low technology for certain sub-populations indicates minimal data availability.

Dr. Halamka completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University, where he received a degree in medical microbiology and a degree in public policy with a focus on technology issues. He entered medical school at the University of California, San Francisco and simultaneously pursued graduate work in bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley focusing on technology issues in medicine. He completed his residency at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
In his role at BIDMC, Dr. Halamka is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative, and academic information technology, serving 3,000 doctors, 12,000 employees, and 1,000,000 patients. As chairman of NEHEN, Dr. Halamka oversees clinical and administrative data exchange among the payers, providers, and patients in Massachusetts. As a Harvard professor, he has served the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration, and national governments throughout the world planning their healthcare IT strategy.
Dr. Halamka has authored five books on technology-related issues, hundreds of articles and thousands of posts on the popular Geekdoctor blog. He runs Unity Farm in Sherborn, MA and serves as caretaker for 150 animals, 30 acres of agricultural production and a cidery/winery.

Importance: This three-part study characterizes the widespread implementation of telehealth during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, giving us insight into the role of telehealth as we enter a stage of “new normal” healthcare delivery in the U.S.
Objective: The COVID-19 Telehealth Impact Study was designed to describe the natural experiment of telehealth adoption during the pandemic. Using a large claims data stream and surveys of providers and patients, we studied telehealth in all 50 states to inform healthcare leaders.
Design, Setting, Participants: In March 2020, the MITRE Corporation and Mayo Clinic founded the COVID-19 Healthcare Coalition (C19HCC), to respond to the pandemic. We report trends using a dataset of over 2 billion healthcare claims covering over 50% of private insurance activity in the U.S. (January 2019-December 2020), along with key elements from our provider survey (July-August 2020) and patient survey (November 2020 - February 2021).

His teaching and research over the past 25 years includes educating graduate level and executive students on 4 continents and conducting extensive studies on the efficacy and diffusion of digital health, including electronic data capture, ePRO, wearables, and predictive algorithms.
Professor Kachnowski has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers and presentations for national and international journals and societies in digital health development, management, and diffusion. He was selected as a Fellow to CHIME in 1998. In 2003 he received a letter of commendation for teaching excellence from the Dean of the School of Public Health at Columbia University. Professor Kachnowski was named a Fellow to England’s Royal Society of Medicine for his research demonstrating the outcomes effectiveness of using the Palm Pilot in managing haemophilia patients in 2005. Professor Kachnowski has received grant funding from a wide ranging groups of sponsors, including over a dozen nations, AARP, WHO, USAID, Gates and Dell Foundations, and most of the top 20 global life science companies. Over the past 25 years he has also served as interim CTO for life science organizations, including Eyetech and Oncology.com. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Oursmedicina, The Hudson Center for Health Equity, and Aptus Health.

Session Description: Mississippi understands the challenges and costs of a patient population with chronic diseases. The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) Center for Telehealth has a mission to bridge the gaps in the healthcare delivery system in order to improve the health of all Mississippians. Telehealth is able to connect rural residents to the specialists at the larger tertiary centers in the state, thus increasing access. In August 2014, the UMMC Center for Telehealth launched The Mississippi Diabetes Telehealth Network to pilot an advanced healthcare model on patients with uncontrolled diabetes living in the Mississippi Delta. The model employs evidenced based practice, multidisciplinary teams, and individualized nursing interaction in an effort to empower patients to better manage their diabetes. Our program focuses on decreasing health disparities; managing chronic diseases; reducing emergency room visits, hospital admissions and readmissions; and improving health quality while reducing the overall cost of care.

In fiscal 2019, over 909,000 VA patients received a portion of their VA care through telehealth, and over 60% of VA’s primary and mental health care providers participated in one or more Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT) appointments to a patient’s home.
The VA Office of Connected Care Quality and Training (QT) Division’s pandemic 2020 response resulted in over 80,000 new course completions in the first month and over 20% more primary care and mental health providers conducting CVT visits in the first five months. During this period, the number of CVT appointments increased by over 1,000%.
Learn how the VA’s telehealth training infrastructure enabled the VA to enter the COVID-19 public health emergency fully prepared for the rapid growth in telehealth care. As CVT became increasingly important during the COVID-19 response, the QT Division made necessary curriculum adjustments, meeting provider and patient needs.

He was selected as a Fellow to CHIME in 1998. In 2003 he received a letter of commendation for teaching excellence from the Dean of the School of Public Health at Columbia University. Professor Kachnowski was named a Fellow to England’s Royal Society of Medicine for his research demonstrating the outcomes effectiveness of using the Palm Pilot in managing haemophilia patients in 2005. Professor Kachnowski has received grant funding from a wide ranging groups of sponsors, including over a dozen nations, AARP, WHO, USAID, Gates and Dell Foundations, and most of the top 20 global life science companies. Over the past 25 years he has also served as interim CTO for life science organizations, including Eyetech and Oncology.com. Session Description: Mississippi understands the challenges and costs of a patient population with chronic diseases. The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) Center for Telehealth has a mission to bridge the gaps in the healthcare delivery system in order to improve the health of all Mississippians. Telehealth is able to connect rural residents to the specialists at the larger tertiary centers in the state, thus increasing access. In August 2014, the UMMC Center for Telehealth launched The Mississippi Diabetes Telehealth Network to pilot an advanced healthcare model on patients with uncontrolled diabetes living in the Mississippi Delta. The model employs evidenced based practice, multidisciplinary teams, and individualized nursing interaction in an effort to empower patients to better manage their diabetes. Our program focuses on decreasing health disparities; managing chronic diseases; reducing emergency room visits, hospital admissions and readmissions; and improving health quality while reducing the overall cost of care.
The session will address what and who the stakeholders are in healthcare, and how smart contracts can be deployed in decentralized payment system in healthcare, types of platforms that can be deployed, the structure of private blockchains, what the best public platforms for smart contracts with payments are, and if scalable, technological limitations. Iris Berman, RN, MSN, CCRN-K, is the VP of telehealth services at Northwell Health. Having been a nurse for more than 30 years, she has experience in a variety of care settings that has given her a unique understanding of the needs of at-risk patient populations and the critical nature of patient access. She started her career as a per diem nurse, which gave her the opportunity to work in a variety of environments, but it was Critical Care that called to her. After moving into a position in critical care, she became interested in at risk populations and volunteered to work on joint programs with her hospital and the American Heart Association. The health system supported her interest and the program continued to grow. She and her team developed a support program for patients with a variety of cardiac diseases. While attending school for her MSN in nursing administration, she became the critical care educator for Glen Cove hospital, now a part of Northwell Health.

Dr. Erik Viirre is Adjunct Professor in the UCSD Departments of Neurosciences, Surgery and Cognitive Science. His clinical specialties are vertigo, balance problems and tinnitus. He treats people with disorders such as Migraine, Menieres Disease, Labyrinthitis and Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV). His interests include vision, hearing and the vestibular system and higher cognitive function. Dr. Viirre has done research for the National Institutes of Health, the United States Navy’s Office of Naval Research, DARPA and NASA. He is a consultant for groups such as the National Academy of Science and a variety of Virtual Reality technology companies. He has participated in a variety of start-up companies, including Zero G Corporation, and Otosound LLC, which is bringing to market technology for treatment of tinnitus that he developed and patented at UCSD. Dr. Viirre received his Ph.D. in Neurophysiology in 1987 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada and his M.D. in 1988. He completed a Rotating Internship at St. Josephs's Medical Center in London, Canada in 1989. After his internship in London, he was a fellow at the Robarts Research Institute in functional imaging and had an eye care practice. In 1994, Dr. Viirre was a Visiting Professor in Neurology and Ophthalmology at UCLA where he did a fellowship in Medical Neurotology, the management of inner ear disorders. In 1995-99 he was a Scientist at the Human Interface Technology Lab at the University of Washington. He was a Senior Scientist in the Human Performance Department of the US Navy’s Naval Health Research Center from 2001 to 2012 and is a member of the Clinical Investigation Department at Naval Medical Center San Diego as of 2012.

The affirmative team provides a defense of the topic wording that can include parts or its entirety. They will offer an initial “case” in their opening presentation, rebuild it in their response by refuting the negative attacks and offer key final comparisons in their rebuttals.
The negative team’s job is to disprove the affirmative thesis. Their initial presentation should poke holes in the initial affirmative presentation and outline any of their own proofs for their side. The negative response will point out the key points unanswered by the affirmative response and refute attacks on their proofs. Their rebuttal will offer key final comparisons.
