Hi! my name is Kami Rowan and I am Associate Professor of Music at Guilford College. I'm also lucky enough to be the faculty advisor for WQFS, our college's radio station ranked #6 in the nation by the Princeton Review. His most recent administrative role was as vice president of university advancement at California State University East Bay and concurrently as president of the Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation. He created a robust and multi-faceted five-year plan for the Division of University Advancement, launched the first comprehensive annual fund program, and revitalized a stalled $40 million campaign.
“Guilford College has a sterling reputation and is destined to reach new heights with the leadership and vision provided by President Fernandes,” Ara said. “I am thrilled to join the Guilford College family and Greensboro community.
“It is going to be very exciting and rewarding to work with my colleagues, alumni, students, board leadership, and benefactors of the College to increase philanthropic investments in our outstanding students, faculty, and programs; and elevate Guilford’s profile regionally and nationally.”
In seven years as senior vice president of development for the Clark College Foundation in Vancouver, Washington, Ara enhanced the fundraising department through a reorganization that received national recognition from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He led the institution’s first comprehensive campaign, which generated about $27 million in support of facilities, programs and scholarships.
His other professional roles have included serving as the director of development and alumnae relations for the Girl Scouts of Utah, director of organizational advancement for the Utah Diabetes Center at the University of Utah and development director for the College of Applied Science and Technology at Weber State University, where he was part of a team that raised over $90 million.
Ara has served as a member of the board of directors for the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington, a member of the Vancouver Symphony and Opera Friends Board, a member of the board of directors for the Pride Center of Utah, and a gubernatorial appointment to the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission in Utah.
Currently, he is a member of the faculty for the College of Professional Studies at Creighton University, having conceptualized and created the nonprofit leadership track, which is one of the three areas of specialization for the integrated leadership studies degree program at Creighton.
A native of Iran, Ara lived in Tehran, West Berlin and London before immigrating to the United States to pursue post-secondary education. He earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and studies from Utah State University and a master’s in public administration from the University of Utah with an emphasis in nonprofit leadership. He is a Ph.D. candidate in higher education leadership at Colorado State University. He holds the CFRE (certified fundraising executive) designation.
Multicultural Education, Director of Multicultural Education
changsh@guilford.edu Stephanie has a wealth of experience in teaching, research and programming around diversity and inclusion on campus. Stephanie started her work in higher education as the first coordinator of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Office at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then worked as a program coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center at the University of California, Irvine.
“I am extremely excited to immerse myself in the Guilford College community! As someone who is committed to the work of higher education as it relates to power, privilege and oppression, I look for campus communities that value and embody diversity, equity and inclusion on many levels,” Stephanie said.
“During my on-campus interview at Guilford, I felt, saw and learned that Guilford is ready to engage in challenging dialogues around inclusion. A campus prepared to engage in complex and difficult diversity work is where I want to be.”
After doing focused work on sexuality and gender identity/expression on two campuses, Stephanie went to the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to obtain her Masters in Education in College Student Administration. While at Penn State, she worked with student activities and leadership development programs, and delved into campus climate and student-athlete research.
Following her time at Penn State, Stephanie transitioned to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). While at UMD, Stephanie studied and researched intergroup dialogue programs and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on diversity, privilege, oppression, facilitating intergroup dialogues and leadership development in multiple contexts.
Currently, Stephanie is working on completing her Ph.D. from UMD’s College Student Personnel and Administration program. Most recently, she has served as an adjunct faculty member for New England College’s Master of Science in Higher Education Administration program teaching a course titled Multicultural Competency.
Stephanie earned a Bachelor’s degree in African and Afro-American studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002, a Masters in Education in College Student Affairs at Pennsylvania State University in 2009, and anticipates finishing her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, by the end of 2016.
“I am eager to work with students and the campus in social identity related experiences, sense of belonging, and the celebration of cultural histories and backgrounds,” Stephanie said. “I look forward to learning more about the needs of the campus and doing my best in my upcoming role in MED to address and attend to the important diversity, equity and inclusion needs of students, faculty and staff.”

Departments and Positions: Office of Communications & Marketing, Vice President of Marketing Administration, Vice President of Marketing Phones: School Extension 316.2123 degermanre@guilford.edu Biography: Roger is responsible for creating a consistent and compelling brand presence that gives Guilford competitive distinction in the marketplace. His marketing team collaborates College-wide to conceive and execute effective strategies for growing and sustaining success in student recruitment and retention, as well as donor support.
For 14 years, Roger served at the cabinet level at Concordia College (Minnesota), as senior director of communications and marketing. He was communications director and news bureau director in his first three years at the college, 1998-2001, and worked under four presidents.
At Concordia, Roger championed major repositioning initiatives to elevate the college’s brand and developed marketing communication strategies that contributed to 4 percent gains in the freshmen academic profile and first- to second-year student retention. His leadership also included brand development for Concordia’s Offutt School of Business and co-founding a new employee brand orientation program.
In addition to his work in higher education, Roger was sports director and anchor at KXJB-TV in Fargo, N.D., 1991-98.
A 1984 graduate of Concordia with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Roger earned his master’s degree in organizational leadership from the University of Denver in 2013. His master’s thesis focused on the urgent need for private higher education institutions to re-imagine and retool their marketing strategies based on research.

Jennifer Boyd Johnson, M.Ed, CI, CT, NIC
Jennifer first joined the field of interpreting in 2002 upon receiving her B.S. in English/ASL Interpreting from Bloomsburg University. After holding several staff interpreter positions, including five years as the designated interpreter for the Director of the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (DSDHH), she returned to school to earn her Master of Education in Interpreting Pedagogy from Northeastern University. During her studies at Northeastern, Jennifer connected with her passion for teaching and working alongside colleagues to assist them in assessing their work and developing their skills. Her favorite areas of discussion and development relate to ethics, decision-making and language.
Jennifer held the position of Communication Access Manger with DSDHH for two years. In this role, she created professional development trainings for working interpreters and served as a mentor and lead interpreter. She currently works as the designated interpreter for the Guilford College President in Greensboro, North Carolina. Originally from outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Jennifer is happy to now call North Carolina home.

Friends Center, William R. Rogers Director of Friends Center & Quaker Studies Religious Studies, Adjunct Professor
Wess has been a full-time Quaker minister, educator, researcher and public theologian, and has been working toward cultivating renewal among all branches of the Religious Society of Friends. For five and a half years, until mid-2015, he served as “released minister” at Camas (Wash.) Friends church, a programmed meeting in the Northwest Yearly Meeting.
As a doctoral student at Fuller Theological Seminary in California, his area of research was renewal of the Quaker tradition within contemporary context. He created a model of renewal for use by Quakers and all faith traditions and, in July 2014, earned his Ph.D. from Fuller’s School of Intercultural Studies. Upon graduation he received the School’s Dean’s Award for academic excellence. His dissertation focused on contextual theology, participatory culture and the renewal of the Quaker tradition within Western culture.
Wess has diverse teaching experience, including graduate-level classes for three years at George Fox Evangelical Seminary (Oregon) and Earlham School of Religion. He is the author of five books, including A Convergent Model of Renewal: Remixing the Quaker Tradition in a Participatory Culture, which was published in 2015.

Prior to joining Guilford, Beth served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. At St. Mary’s, she led the development of transparent budget processes, strengthened and expanded support for research and sponsored programs and expanded student opportunities for community engaged learning.
Beth served as vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Washington Tacoma from 2007-11, overseeing significant growth of students and academic programs. As dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Georgia College from 2001-07, she led increases in both students and faculty by more than 50 percent. She was department chair at the University of Tennessee at Martin and began her academic career on the faculty of the Department of Sociology at Kent State University.
Beth’s scholarly work has focused on the sociology of work, gender and health. She has published 25 articles and chapters, and received numerous federal, state, and local grants to support her research. She served as president of Sociologists for Women in Society, on the editorial board of Health: an Interdisciplinary Journal of Health, Illness, and Medicine, vice president of the Southern Sociological Society and as chair of the Jessie Bernard Award Committee of the American Sociological Association.
Beth is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Leadership Award from the University of Washington Tacoma, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Professor at Georgia College, University Teaching Council Award from Kent State University and Outstanding Faculty Member from Kent State’s Mortar Board.
Beth earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Carson-Newman College (Tennessee) and master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology from Duke University.

I am Assocaite Professor of Music at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. Part of my amazing job description is being the Faculty Adbisor for our radio station, WQFS, 90.9. WQFS was ranked 6th in the nation of college radio stations in 2014. I also have the privelage of being a DJ at the station. Every week during the school year, I host an hour long show called WQFS Faculty/Staff hour. I interview folks from our community about their lives, their connection to music and their work. This is a wonderful opporunity for me, and others to get to know our friends and colleagues at a deeper level. The show has been a real success becasue I work with amzing humans.
