This week I met Moving On Music's Brian Carson for a preview of their Brilliant Corners festival. The festival runs Tuesday 7th until Saturday 11th March with a string of great gigs in the realm of jazz, bop, experimental and free improvisation.
The festival hosts both international and local players and groups at gigs in Sonic Arts Research Centre, Black Box and Crescent Arts Centre; with an accompanying film programme with three great music documentaries at the Bean Bag Cinema.
Brian opens up about getting turned on to live music and particularly jazz by seeing some legendary players during his student days in Newcastle. He tells the story of Moving on Music from its inception to its current emerging artists programme, and shares his views on the importance of arts in Northern Ireland.

Robert Martin chats to textile art Heather Burgess about her solo exhibition 'Emerging Reality - a rogue butterfly' at R-Space Gallery in Lisburn.
During the interview Burgess provides in-depth descriptions about the inspiration behind the works and their production. You can use this audio as a guide around the exhibition whilst visiting the gallery.
In this textile-based work Heather Burgess explores her experience of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 32, and expresses her feelings about the diagnosis, her treatment and recovery. This cancer affects the thyroid gland that sits in the front of the neck. On the surface, all seemed well before the diagnosis in 2012, as everything that was happening was hidden deep inside the body.
The work uses sewing pattern pieces for collars, in reference to the location of the disease. Making the work has been a way for Heather to catalogue medical information and gain personal control over the situation, using techniques that she developed and that give her comfort: patchwork, machine embroidery, hand stitching and using small pieces of various materials.
At first glance, the work is delicately aesthetic, but closer inspection reveals a dark undertone of what was to come as the cancer diagnosis was received and the tumour removed. The fragility of the materials references the relative vulnerability of the neck and throat, as well was the precarious nature of the treatment journey.
Textile-based work that both informs and expresses feelings about the experience of being diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer at the age of 32. The making has been both therapeutic and a way for Burgess to catalogue information and gain control over the situation.
The work is presented in 3 volumes: Diagnosis, Treatment and Recovery.

In the last episode we started the THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS SONG SHOWDOWN – a knock-out bracket to decide the best christmas song ever. We worked our way through the first round match-ups and now we’re ready to decide the finals. My panel of guest judges return – Cheylene Murphy, Ryan McGroarty, Bee Mick See, and Megan-Cáitlín Dallat. And they’re even merrier than last time!
One year on from the first ever episode of The Jewel Case I decided to re-festive-ise my playlist and get some Christmas songs on the stereo. This time last year I picked some of my favourite winter warmers for an intimate seasonal set. But for this year's yuletide show I thought I'd get some friends in to help me decide the best holiday tune ever in THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS SONG SHOWDOWN.
So I got together four of my favourite guests from the first year of the podcast - Cheylene Murphy, Ryan McGroarty, Bee Mick See, and Megan-Cáitlín Dallat. The plan: to pit 36 of the best holiday songs head-to-head in the knock-out tournament to end all knockout tournaments.

For this week’s podcast I took a trip to Edenderry Village to visit the home studio of illustrator Stephen Maurice Graham. A few years ago Stephen decided to give it a bash as a full-time self-employed illustrator and since then he’s made big waves getting his work featured in publications including The Washington Post, The Sunday Times, GQ and TIME. Phew!
Stephen launches his new comic publication ‘Michael’ on Wednesday 30th November at UsFolk, Belfast. I caught up with him to hear about the origins of his cartoon protagonist and ended up accidentally inviting him to co-host of The Jewel Case. See you next week Steve!

Last Thursday Outburst Queer Arts Festival hosted the Northern Irish premiere of KIKI – a documentary film about an LGBTQ youth-of-color subculture of New York City’s Ballroom scene, made famous in the early 1990s by Madonna’s music video “Vogue” and the documentary “Paris Is Burning.” The screening was followed by a great Q&A with the film’s co-writer and gatekeeper of the Kiki community, Twiggy Pucci Garçon.
We heard about the NYC House and Ballroom scene on Episode 19 of The Jewel Case when I chatted to Claire Hall – the Belfast-based DJ and events producer who last year brought three members of the Kiki community to The MAC for the performance event ‘House‘.
After seeing KIKI at Queen’s Film Theatre, I caught up with Twiggy and Claire to chat about the film – its powerful personal stories, their documentarian approach, and its sensitive portrayal of gender transitioning. We also talk about Twiggy’s activism and community service initiatives for LGBTQ youth, and I ask Claire about the significance of this film’s showing in Northern Ireland.

This week's guest on the podcast is David Holmes - one of Northern Ireland's most interesting musical minds. He's the auteur of critically acclaimed solo albums Let’s Get Killed and The Holy Pictures. He's the curator of seminal tapes Essential Mix and The Free Asssociation. He's the soundtrack composer for Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy, Hunger, Good Vibrations and '71. He produces Primal Scream and Noel Gallagher. Oh, and let's not forgot he's a decent club DJ - his legendary nights at Belfast's art college made him one of the key figures in the city's Acid House scene.
Holmes is just about to release a new mix for the Late Night Tales series - God's Waiting Room and he invited me to his home studio to talk about the creation of the album.
During the conversation we go in-depth on David's inspiration and process in the making of God's Waiting Room. He describes some touching moments in the studio with BP Fallon in the album's homage to Northern Irish guitar legend Henry McCullough; and his collaboration with Jon Hopkins and Stephen Rea on the album's closer - and extract from Seamus Heaney’s Aeneid Book VI.
You'll hear a taste of some of the mix's choice picks from Buddy Holly and Jeff Bridges, as well as one of its many exclusive tracks - the Holmes-produced version of 10cc's I’m Not In Love performed by Song Sung.
Along the way we take a wider look at Holmer's musical journey - how his many siblings shaped his early absorption of music, how he listens to music, and how his crate-digging habits are changing as both he and technology evolve.

Back when I had braces on my teeth and gel in my hair I played my first ever gig in Belfast at the Front Page bar. One of the other bands on the stage that night were a couple of years older and a tonne of riffs wiser. They were called Remains of Youth. Or was it '(the) Remains of Youth'?
Remains of Youth were one of my local favourites and I was consistently left starry-eyed by their jagged rhythms and the heartfelt vocals of frontman duo of Adam Shirlow and Andy Melville. Somewhere along the way The Front Page ceased to exist, and so did Remains of Youth.
Now, after a hiatus of almost a decade, Remains of Youth have reformed and are about to drop a new EP - There Is Hope Without Progress.
On this week's podcast I met up with Andy, Adam, Hendy and Chris at their rehearsal room to chat about the journey they've been on, together and apart in bands like Before Machines, Coda and Burn the Canvas. We hear some of their musical influences (At The Drive In, The Appleseed Cast, Jimmy Eat World, Sleater-Kinney), delve into their own back catalogue, and get an early listen to some of the tracks from the new EP.

This month PS2 Gallery in Belfast has been hosting a group exhibition co-ordinated by the Go Girl collective – a group of young, female creatives based in Northern Ireland who organise eye-catching projects that realise feminist agendas in a very practical way. At PS2, fifteen Go Girls have filled the gallery with paintings, drawings, photography and objects.
This week on The Jewel Case I’m joined by participating artists and Go Girls Cheylene Murphy (Beauty Sleep), Abbie Madden (Pony Dance), and the exhibition curator Catherine McLaughlin.

We're joined by one of the performers, Tristan Clutterbuck, to discuss some recent movements in sound art in Northern Ireland and to preview the upcoming events of the series.
'Tuning the White Walls features an interactive performance with Min's alter-ego Una Lee; chaotic synthesis from Tristan; guitar improvisation from Aongus McEvoy; a wall-shaking installation from Pablo Sanz; co-operative music-making with Miguel Ortiz and Steph Horak; and the long-awaited return of Belfast City Choir.

Summer festival season is upon us! With loads of events coming up across Northern Ireland and Ireland in coming months, I thought I'd do a mega-round-up of local festivals you'll want to get to.
There are a bunch of nice things happening close to Lisburn (Sunflower Fest, Hilden Beer Festival and Music Festival, Moira Calling, Rose Week); in Bangor and Ards (Open House, Ulster Fleadh, Summer music in the Park, Creative Peninsula) and in South Down (Soma Festival, Serendipitous Music, Fiddler's Green International Festival).
I also highlight some festivals happening in Belfast (Féile, Belfast Pride, East Side Arts Festival, Belfast Mela, Tennents Vital, Belfast Guitar Festival); the Northwest (Music City Derry, Stendhal Festival, Maiden City Tattoo Convention); and elsewhere in the province (Dalriada Festival, 7 Hills Blues Festival).

I knew my old buddy Jack Hughes was a nerd for things like photography and films - but I just recently found out he was a keen board game enthusiast. This week I caught up with Jack to find out more about his favourite pastime and the current 'Golden Age' of board games.

Robert Martin chats to Liz Cooper, curator of the 'What Do I Need To Do To Make It Better'.
The touring exhibition launched at the Pumphouse Gallery, London in 2015, and has since been seen at the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham and the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Tracey, with new works continuing to be added as the tour unfolds.
Featuring specially commissioned pieces, the exhibition principally explores damage and repair through the processes and gestures of textile mending. Using stitch and other media in a range of scales and materials, the artists examine themes of disease and medicine, healing and restoration as applied to landscapes, bodies, minds and objects.
Artists featured at the show are Dorothy Caldwell, Saidhbhín Gibson, Celia Pym, Freddie Robins and Karina Thompson.
'What Do I Need To Do To Make It Better' runs at R-Space Gallery in Lisburn 28 May to 8 July 2016.

This month's Lisburn's Art Space features interviews with two artists showing work at the upcoming exhibition 'Tattoo Me'. Belfast-based Helen McDonnell (Skullduggery Tatu) works from found objects and experiments with different mediums to explore the art of tattooing as a wider form of inscription. Her piece here references the sailors’ art of scrimshaw.
With a past career in car body repairs, local artist Andrew Cooke now uses ceramics to fuse his lifelong love of biker culture and classic vehicles (like his 50’s Chevy) with his appreciation of older tattoo styles and his self-confessed escapist fantasies.

Robert is joined by Gail Mahon and Sandra Robinson from the CAAKE Project to talk about their show 'Readings in Passage' that is running in R-Space Gallery Lisburn until April 15th.
Readings in Passage sees the CAAKE artists group embark on a month-long research project with R-Space gallery as its base. Using visual art, making and performance the group will first spend residential time in the austere landscape of the Glenshane Pass in the Sperrin mountains. The second strand of the project is a “think tank” of public discussions and interactive workshops, and thirdly a live one-night event will distil the resulting body of research into a concluding performance and installation event.
CAAKE is a collaborative group of six visual artists and performers from Northern Ireland and England brought together during the City of Culture in Derry/ Londonderry 2013. Their connection was led by discussion and playful explorations of common ground through materials, movement and meaning. On-going conversations have developed a dialogue around how the body reads and responds to materials through skin knowledge, mapped memories and the exchange of mutable traced effects.
As a work-in-progress conversation Readings in Passage doesn’t expect specific conclusions but aims to explore the collaborative role of art practices in research; making knowledge tangible through visual and embodied communication. It hopes to partner with relevant organisations and to raise public interest around the project, especially in relation to Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
