Why We Travel - Ash Bhardwaj

Ash Bhardwaj is an author, journalist, film-maker and former british army who amongst his many expeditions has ventured the likes of journeying 8500km along the Russian European border. Retraced secret missions of WW2 through Albania. Walked 800km through India and The Himalayas, meeting the Dalai Lama on the way. Walked 1100km through Uganda and Sudan with Levison Wood which included the first summer crossing of the Bayuda Desert. Trekked the Mt Everest Base Camp with wounded soldiers. Worked on earthquake recovery in the Philippines. Trekked through the Jebel of Dhofar in the footsteps of the SAS, and really he’s done a hell of a lot more as well.

He recently published his first book titled Why We Travel, and in discussion of his life and worldview I was privileged to have gotten to sit down with him in his home in London to record this very episode - there is a video available on youtube if you are keen.

Ash really is my dream style of guest. He is a wonderful speaker, incredibly open and curious and has achieved many of the types of things, I wish to one day emulate. I am very grateful to have gotten to spend this time with him.

Micheal Hilliard is a geopolitical analyst host and creator of 'The Red Line Podcast'… and! a fellow Aussie coming to us today from Australia’s glorious West coast capital, Perth.

Micheal and his team with the 'Red Line' take a deep fortnightly dive into a eclectic mix of narrow geopolitical topics … everything from the second hand market for nuclear weapons to the growth of Chinese private military groups...

And so therefore, and needless to say, the 'Red Line' is brilliant and if you have anything geopolitical populating your new episodes feed you'd be smart to too add the red line to your subscriptions.

This is michael’s second appearance on the pod… in his first appearance he hinted a time in his life when he was living in Kazakstan ghostwriting geopolitical analysis and this tidbit has been on my mind ever since.

Curious Worldview Podcast - #170 w/ Ernest Scheyder On Apple
Curious Worldview Podcast - #170 w/ Ernest Scheyder On Spotify

https://atlasgeographica.com/ernest-scheyder/

Ernest Scheyder runs directly towards the impossible trade-offs of mining in the ‘War Below’...

The electrification of the economy is on the one hand very good. It means we can move away from consuming the carbon rich oil into our atmosphere… but it also means that we are going to need way more other stuff from the under the ground than we currently even know about. It will require mining 100’s of more sacred sites and 100’s of more beautiful vistas.

Copper, lithium, cobalt and literally 100’s of other rare earths are all necessary components of batteries, electric cars, trucks, boats, even leaf-blowers… and this for a scale for 8 billion, soon to be 9 billion people…

If a sacred religious sight is built atop enough copper to secure your domestic supply… should you mine it?

If thousands of tonnes of lithium is built under a unique flower, almost certain to go extinct if you extract… should you do it?

And if you decide to play by environmental rules while everyone doesn’t… are you doing what’s right in the short term at the cost of whats best in the long?

These questions consume the book, and as well, this conversation.

So here is a veteran energy journalist for Rueters, and author of the War Below… Ernest Scheyder.

Curious Worldview Podcast - #169 w/ Jon Lee Anderson On Spotify

https://atlasgeographica.com/jon-lee-anderson/

I once responded to a question in a grant application that the people I admired most were great adventurers, great writers and great journalists… the kicker naturally being, that the best was a combination of all three!

Well, in Jon Lee Anderson we have an exemplar for all three of those labels.

Listens past 10 minutes and you will see the adventurer, listen to the details of how he put together Che’s biography and you will understand the journalist but then to top it all off, read anything Jon Lee’s written and you will understand the great writer.

This was a mighty moment for the podcast. I managed to hide my nerves behind a facade of professionalism… but Jon and I ended up spending more than 4 hours together as we inhabited a closed, cold, empty drinkers club on a January London morning.

Curious Worldview Podcast - #167 w/ Bill Browder On Spotify

✍︎: https://curiousworldview.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Bill Browder is back for his #2 appearance on the pod!

This was recorded in his London offices, and builds upon the themes from our first conversation.

Bill discusses the very real threat of assassination by both Putin and China. He lays out his Rouges Gallery of both nations and individuals and offers what is a rather desolate and grim picture of the Russian culture and economy.

Bill Browder is the author of Red Notice & Freezing Order.

Red Notice is one of my favourite autobiographies. It is an incredible story from how Bill went from the descendent of one of America’s most famous communists to becoming one of the most famous capitalists in Russia. At Hermitage Capital’s peak (Bill’s investment firm) he was the largest source of Western Capital in Post-Soviet Russia… his experiences around the voucher system alone make the book a must read. Or podcast a must listen ;)

Anna Sundberg co-authored a book of memoirs titled ‘My Beloved Terrorist’.

This book is an incredible and rare story of how a young woman from Halmstad, who is otherwise your ABBA stereotype of a blonde swede with blue eyes, became radicalised in Islam and ultimately married the jihadist terrorist leader, Said Arif, who was captured by the Syrian secret police and had included in his network, the likes of Osama Bin Laden.

This is the first time she’s ever told this story in english and following the central timeline of her experiences she answers questions about why Islam was even compelling at all the first place, secular Sweden, how steeply and quickly one can become radicalised, a day in the life of a jihadist wife, living in Chechnya, Syria, Berlin, being an extremist muslim in all these places and Sweden, re-entry into Sweden, De-Radicalisation, culture and more.

Tim Butcher returns to the podcast with another incredible journey through an African nation.

The first time Tim appeared he spoke about his adventures through the Congo, weaving a story of an incredibly rich and beautiful country that is nonetheless un-developing.

It remains easily one of my favourite episodes I’ve ever had the privilege to record.

Tim, this time around takes us through his month long journey through Liberia and Sierre Leone. He wrote a book about it called Chasing The Devil, and as the title alludes, a big part of the journey was trying to come to terms with the voodoo, black magic and devil worship that he encounters along the way.

Much like his Congo trip, Tim again is journeying in the footsteps of a great writer who had gone before him. In the case of Liberia it is the famous author and journalists, Graham Greene.

The following is with Ed Conway, who has written one of the most intensely curious books, it is called Material World and looks at some of these raw ingredients that have shaped the world we live in.

Namely, these materials are sand, salt, copper, oil, iron and lithium.

Nothing will give you a greater appreciation for globalisation and the wondrous efficiency of global trade than this book will. It is kind of a miracle that things cost as cheaply as they do, and are as ubiquitous as they are.

A Curious Worldview Podcast - MY MAIN PROJECT!! https://curiousworldview.buzzsprout.com/1485736

🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/bill-browder/

🍻☕: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ryanhogg

The following is a conversation with the CEO and Founder of the Hermitage Fund, Bill Browder. The Hermitage Fund was at one time, the largest source of western capital in Russia and in 1997 the best performing fund in the world.

Bill is also one of the sharpest thorns in the Russian oligarch's side. He lobbied for a law that authorises the U.S. government to sanction foreign government officials worldwide who are deemed to be human rights offenders and freeze their assets, this was named the Magntizky Act after his former lawyer Sergei Magnitzky who was tortured and murdered in a Russian prison.

Bill Browder is the author of both Red Notice, and Freezing Order... which are the catalyst for this chat.

The following is a conversation with John Perkins, the author behind Confessions Of An Economic Hitman.

As the former chief economist of the consultancy firm, Chas. T. Maine, John had an incredible career flying into and then out of a myriad of developing countries facilitating huge debt trap projects in the likes of Indonesia, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and more.

Therefore, in the vein of kleptocracy, capital flight and corrupt institutions, this podcast is a slice of the worldview of the author of Confessions Of An Economic Hitman, John Perkins.

I think Treasure Islands is so significant because for me it explained the foundational knowledge of everything that informs Jim Henry’s Blood Bankers, Bradley Hopes Billion Dollar Whale, Oliver Bullough’s Moneyland and as well, upcoming guests, John Perkins and Bill Browder.

Article Attached To This Podcast Here 🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/justin-scheck-blood-and-oil/

The narrative of MBS is relatively straightforward – a monarch who has seen his country thrive of oil wealth, looks into the future and see a world where both fossil fuels and social inequality are a thing of the past. MBS being the visionary with the deep pockets exacts his wealth and influence to make a change transitioning Saudi Arabia from a state that relies on oil to one that relies on solar and other renewables.

So the narrative is simple, but it is the details that are complex. With the monarchy growing at an exponential rate – yes, exponential family growth – the limitations of Saudi geography, the complexity of international influence, the role of social media and the pressures of trying to maintain balance and order, the easily understood vision of MBS is met by hundreds of divergent paths he can barely hang on to.

Find the book here.

In this podcast, you can expect to learn…

  • A brief history of Saudi Arabia.
  • How MBS spends his billions.
  • A bit about the implications of Kashoggi.
  • What MBS true skills and qualities are.
  • The role of McKinsey, BCG and the rest in Saudi Arabia.
    • much, much more.

Listen To This Interview As A Podcast Instead🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/interview-special-economic-zones/

Both Preston & Aleksa work for the Special Economic Zone consultancy firm, The Adrianople Group, of which Preston is a co-founder. We covered so much in this chat – most notably, what are special economic zones? I wrote an article explaining, in brief, an introduction to these phenomena of globalisation and multinational trade, but it is in this conversation I had with Preston & Aleksa that the true depth of Special Economic Zones starts to be realised.

Over 60% of the world's trade runs through a Special Economic Zone and these are spaces whose regulations fall outside of the state's regulations within the country they are housed. So you can immediately see a story of tax evasion and exploitation. But this is to quick and un-nuanced a look at things, it turns out Special Economic Zones (like many things) are subject to both the good and the bad, and things of such complexity are worth thinking about.

My favourite part of the chart was all of it! But that doesn’t help you point out highlights. So in short I would say the following three subjects make up the best parts of the conversation.

  • The Philosophy Of Special Economic Zones
  • China & It’s History With Special Economic Zones
  • Defining Special Economic Zones Through Real-Life Examples

Listen To This Interview As A Podcast Instead🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/tim-marshall-power-of-geography/

Tim Marshall returns to the podcast!

To continue along with the international theme and enormous popularity of ‘Prisoners Of Geography‘, Tim Marshall recently published the natural follow-on to this wonderfully geopolitical lens through which to measure the world… ‘The Power Of Geography‘.

It is the themes within this freshly minted book those which Tim and I discuss in this interview. Tim comments on everything from Australia to China to the UK to MBS to Saudi Arabia and even to space. Tim even comments on an accusation often made against him that he is taking a geographical determinist’s view of the world – making for a very interesting consideration for what are the actual building blocks of the world we currently inhabit.

Tim doesn’t disappoint with his broad geopolitical erudition.

James Robinson is a British economist and political scientist. He studies what makes countries different by focusing on the underlying economic and political institutions that lead some to prosperity and others to conflict. He most famously co-authored the international best selling book, Why Nations Fail.

He has conducted research in many countries around the world including Botswana, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Colombia and I am sure many more as well.

The coolest and most insightful takeaway from 'Why Nations Fail' is the long explanation that distinguishes between inclusive and extractive institutions. This dynamic explains ultimately 'Why Nations Fail' and Why Nations Succeed. The book is strongly endorsed by Jared Diamond - which was the initial reason why I picked it up, but once you get into it it is the historical anecdotes that keep you around.

I could have spoken to James for hours, for me the most fascinating topic is how and why nations differ - so you can imagine, this chat meant specifically a lot to me.

Dr. Hetou guides the development and oversees the operational efficiency of iStrategic. She is a consultant and advisor on Middle East and North Africa affairs, specializing in political risk analysis, foreign policy, political economy, geopolitics, and business strategies. Dr. Hetou also writes a weekly Op-Ed in Forbes Middle East.

I was fascinated by the depth of her insights and could have spoken with her for hours on this topic. For me the most exciting moment of the podcast comes towards the end with the discussion of China's Belt & Road Initiative.

Article For This Episode - https://atlasgeographica.com/vince-beiser/

Vince Beiser joined me on the podcast recently. He is the author of The World In A Grain: The Story Of Sand.

Sand is the most important solid substance on Earth. It is not an exaggeration to assert that without it we don't have our modern civilisation.

Sand is the building block of modernity. It is the foundational input for cement, glass and even silicon, the stuff that builds our computer chips. Without sand, we cannot construct the awesome buildings that we do. We would not have the wonderful aesthetics and functionality of glass that we have. And we would, one could argue most importantly, not even be able to produce the semi-conductors which are so integral to our computers and therefore modern civilisation.

"Sand is to cities, what flour is to bread" Vince Beiser, author of the book - The World In A Grain: The Story Of Sand.
