When you were growing up did you feel like you were more encouraged and rewarded when you were polite or authentic?

Sam and I explore the impact of the way we raise our children on our ability to use our voice and speak up for ourselves.

My mind is on rites of passage, initiation, and communities.

As I slowly come out of my youthful fantasy of being an island and start acknowledging the enormous power the community around me while growing up has shaped me and how my current community continues to shape me I'm starting to look at what was lost through the fragmentation of our communities (the breaking of close inter-familial and inter-generational interactions) after the industrial revolution.

We have rapidly lost or left behind millennia of rituals and mentorship practices which not appeared to help the transition girls and boys into adulthood, it also helped them to experience how they fit into a community and how they can contribute and thus improved their confidence and sense of belonging.

It seems like there is a lot of confusion now around how men and women fit into a fragmented social society and a loss of that deeps sense of belonging and being part of a tribe.

Jake Clapson and I recorded a conversation we had about this.

How do you feel out community has changed and what do you feel is missing?

With the amazing Nick Maier, CEO of The Youth Academy, P.S. We’re both super grateful for COVID-19

*You’re going to have to listen to get it :P

#Audio Cut#

At just before the 14 minute mark we had a brief reception cut, for those who love closure Nick is asking himself “how many years have I shown up in a way which hasn’t best served myself or my partner because I’ve been too serious”

More and more of us seem to be losing faith in the idea of marriage and commitment seems to be becoming a thing of the past.

Are relationships heading the way of jobs? 40 years ago you'd expect to have 1 or 2 in your life, and now you're expected to have a new one every 4.4 years?

What is the modern version of commitment, does it still have a place?

Japan was awesome.

The world ended.

No biggie, somehow I'm more socially connected than I was before the apocalypse.

Go figure!

Got some awesome episodes coming and suddenly have a hell of a lot of free time to record some more :D

Would love to hear who you guys know who I should interview!

I'd love people talking on: relationships, coming of age rituals, intimacy, sexuality.

I want to come out the other side of this having recorded some amazing talks with some amazing people!

Eating the shit I sell!

This chapter has me and my partner Jamie going through an exercise given to us by Gabrielle Lawrie, Sex & Relationships Counsellor on the healthy and unhealthy conflict resolution styles we use with each other and we see each other use.

Definitely the weirdest Christmas present I've ever given a partner, but probably the most healthy!

Let me know what you think, did you do it with your partner too?

Honesty is hard, dishonesty is harder.

This was a really hard podcast for me to record.

Being honest is a strong value of mine but this year I found myself doing very dishonest behaviours.

They weren't overtly dishonest. I wasn't blatantly lying.

It was a far more insidious and easy to miss kind of dishonesty.

Covert dishonesty. The dishonesty of omission, of carefuly crafting the way of saying something so you can control how another person will perceive it.

Struggling to resolve conflicts, or disagree in a relationship without having it become personal?

Then this episode covers a heap of useful techniques for you! The 3 unhealthy conflict resolution styles and the healthy conflict resolution style. We also dabble in the 5 love languages, demand/withdraw relating styles, fear centered relating and the dangers of 10/10 chemistry. Fascinating stuff and I’m definitely having Gabrielle back to get into each topic more in depth!

God we had some fun in this podcast, towards then end we really got rolling with a lot of laughs and a lot of cool takeaways.

Let me know what you think, have some fun and listen to it with your partner!

Have I had my desires conversation or am I gambling in my relationship?

While recording this podcast I realised I was gambling, not eating the shit I sell.

I made that change immediately last night and took action so my partner and I could be working towards our desires in life together, rather than guessing at what eachother wants.

This episode is me reflecting and applying what I learned from my amazing conversation with Jess and Andrew a few weeks ago.

For this chapter I have two people I really appreciate and from whom I’ve learned a lot about myself. The essence of what we discuss is how you can fuck up and how you can improve your relationships.

Andrew is the founder of core magnetism, he specialises in coaching around sex and relationships. He’s been a mentor figure for me in this area of my life for a few years now and I find his insights and perspectives typically very considered and valuable.

Jess, or Mad Dame as she’s professionally known, has done a lot of work exploring her comfort in herself and her sexual expression. Her raw honesty has helped me understand and empathise with women so much more and that has significantly improved my ability to build a deep and honest connection with them.

In this chapter we go into the mistakes we’ve made in relationships over the years, forcing ourselves to fit our partners, the cost of compromising. I re-listen to these podcasts before I do these intros and we get onto some raw gold towards the end. It’s great. I’m sure you’ll love this chapter. And I look forward to hearing what you learn from it.

This episode explores why I've started the Wild at Heart men's movement and what to expect from the podcast which in its core is about helping to support men and bring them together in a world where there seems to be more challenges and isolation facing us than ever before.

Season 1 is going to be me interviewing men and women I really look up to for their enormous maturity in how they deal with relationships and intimacy, letting their walls come down, not being ruled by fear, but also remaining powerful and true to themselves in these relationships. Traits I hugely admire and am working on bringing into myself!
