We recently chatted with I/O Psychology professional and UMBC alum, Twisha Thakore '19, M.P.S. I/O Psychology. We spoke about the critical elements, qualities, and skills needed to be effective as an I/O Psychologist. Accordingly, she highlighted the importance of safeguarding the delicate balance between business and the human element.
The art and science of I/O Psychology operates on the notion that people are more than data on a screen. Generally, it's often the responsibility of the I/O Psychologist to interpret data points. Basically, they create a story to explain the data to stakeholders in terms that will create meaning and context. Through telling the story, an I/O Psychologist equips stakeholders at all levels with helpful information. Consequently, this info helps them to make sound decisions and plan of actions for their learning and development initiatives. Notwithstanding, data is worthless without meaning, context, and understanding behind it.
Twisha stated that I/O Psychology is about having a balanced act between corporate strategies and people. We need to use psychological principles to ensure that the human element is protected at all costs.

About Darren Dasburg:
Bringing over 39 years of technical operations experience in a variety of small and large molecule settings, Darren Dasburg recently departed AstraZeneca as Vice President Global PMO & Strategy in 2017 after his role as Site GM for the Boulder Manufacturing Center beginning in September 2015 when AstraZeneca/MedImmune acquired the former Amgen biologics production facility, retrofitted and started up through 2017. He is currently in advancing discussions for cell and gene therapy start-ups.
Previously, Darren held the position of Vice President MedI BioVentures building partnerships in Korea, Japan and China for biosimilar development. Before then, VP of Capacity Utilization with where he led the first of its kind capacity sharing arrangement to support bio-manufacturing production. Prior to that, he was a Founding Partner in a consulting venture where he provided executive management team leadership in the areas of technical operations, manufacturing operations, project management, and business strategy. Darren did his formative years and ultimately served as Vice President of Corporate Engineering with GlaxoSmithKline.
Darren holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University and a MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and advanced certificates in biotechnology from MIT. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina and has worked on the ISPE Bio Mfg Conference since its inception.
Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field, especially in the state of Maryland. In fact, according to Mark Schenerman, Ph.D., Graduate Program Director, UMBC Biotechnology Graduate program, "Maryland is one of the leading centers in the country for cell and gene therapy. Companies in Maryland are trying to hire people as quickly as they can. They just can't find enough talent. They can't find enough trained people who are knowledgeable in the skills that they need. And that's what our program tries to give to our students, those skills that those companies really want."
Recent graduates in the Master's of Professional Studies Biotechnology Program can fit into a number of different career paths in industry. For example, helping to work on process development for cell culture process, process development for purification process, for formulation development, analytical development, quality control, quality assurance, project manager, and Regulatory Affairs. These are all very important areas that are growing very rapidly in the state of Maryland. There's lots of opportunity.

About Dr. Antonio Moreira
Dr. Antonio Moreira is Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He has previously been Chair of the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. He joined UMBC after 10 years in industry where he held senior positions with International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. and Merck & Co. (then Schering-Plough Corp.). He led the biotechnology development group at Merck that brought alpha interferon to the market.
Dr. Moreira obtained a BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal and MS and PhD in chemical and biochemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He was honored by the President of Portugal with the National Order of Public Education and awarded the title of Comendador. He is an Honorary International Member of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and is currently Chair of the Board of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering Foundation.

Sandra Pinto Vera ’21, M.P.S. Data Science searched for an opportunity to do just that. "What I expected to get out of the UMBC Data Science Master’s Professional Studies program was a hands on experience and the opportunity to expand my data science skills while working on applicable projects.”
While at UMBC, Sandra took part in a fellowship data science residency program with Women in Data where she completed a full cycle data science project. The project was on analyzing COVID-19 data sets looking at racial disparities in the COVID vaccine rollout. The data told the true story of disparities present.

At UMBC, we love to hear the journey of how someone ends up in our programs. For Kiaron Bailey '21, M.P.S. Community Leadership, the reason she decided to study community leadership at UMBC was very clear. "I love volunteering. No matter what community I live in, I always try to give back to that community. I decided to do some research on how I can turn my passion of volunteerism into something I can do to help communities. And that's how I landed in the Community Leadership program."
In her current role with the state of Maryland, she is able to put her degree to great use with an agency that constructs schools. She takes the skills she learned in the program and applies them directly to the work she does.

The Learning and Performance Technology Graduate Program (LAPT) at UMBC is specifically designed to help Instructional Designers learn and grow. The program is portfolio-based. We sat down and chatted with Sally J. Scott, Program Director of UMBC’s Graduate Program in Community Leadership. We spoke about her recent contribution in a report she co-authored with Seema Iyer of the Jacob France Institute at the University of Baltimore titled Overcoming Barriers to Home Ownership in Baltimore City.
Summary of the Report
The report initially came out of a question that we were asked by the Abell Foundation, which was, “Could we help more people become homeowners in Baltimore if they had access to more flexible loans and better incentives, such as closing cost assistance?” And that seems like a straightforward question. But as we dug into it and we looked at the local data and the national data, we realized that those proposed solutions would not be enough. There are much deeper issues at work limiting people’s homeownership opportunities in Baltimore. And that’s particularly true in the black community.
We learned that decades of systemic racism, as well as the Great Recession in 2008 and 2009, have created barriers to homeownership in the black community in Baltimore. To address those would require much more systemic and far-reaching solutions than simply better loans and better incentives.
