Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought. When we read it in the bible it sounds good. Sounds right. But I can almost guarantee you that is not the message you are telling yourself. Its not something that parents tell their children. Our messages are pretty much the opposite. "Be proud." "Take pride in your work!" The only one who warns us about pride is God and trust me, he doesn't stutter. Take a moment to learn the freedom of smallness.
Develop the strength of gentleness. Gentleness may not be high on your list of life goals, but gentleness may be the best way to reach your most important life goals. Gentleness is a means to success in the areas of your life that are most important to you. Take a moment to get 10 steps closer to gentleness today
The counterintuitive key to getting more. It’s better to give than to receive, but the reality is sometimes we’d rather receive. Even if mentally, we agree with the statement, most of the time our credit card statement says otherwise. Sure, most of us would agree that “It’s better to give than to receive” but 99% of those Amazon boxes are for you.
Love everyone always. If we all want to be loved and we all want to be known as people who love, why is it so many people feel lonely and overlooked and hurt? Take a moment today to learn not only how to love, but how to feel loved.
A surgeon’s view of life and death. What will people say about you at your funeral? If they lead with topics such as leader of industry, an excellent surgeon, he or she grew company’s bottom line by 40%, this is a missed opportunity to have a profound life where we leave a legacy.
The problem of evil. When we go to the movies we want to see the good guy win and the bad guy lose. Unfortunately the script in life is not as predictable. The bad guys demise is not so sure. Too many times in life the bad guys win and the good guys lose and we are left sitting in the bleachers wondering why there is such evil. Ultimately that question ends up at the feet of God.
Quiet my life. I believe God wants to speak to us. I believe he wants to nudge us in the right direction. I believe he wants to push us toward more. But our life is too loud. There are too many voices, too many noises, too many distractions. Take a moment to quiet your life today.
In the 60's there was a sexual revolution in America. With the advent of the internet, Netflix, HBO and a thousand other avenues to view sexuality, we are trying to swim in a sexual tsunami. Are you drowning? Take a moment to see how you and your family can navigate through the sex-centric society we live in on the next episode of 10 Steps Further.
We think we know our kids, but do we really know them? Not according to our research. We asked kids what they wished their parents knew about them and the answers were eye opening.
Love is not a Hallmark card. Love is not a mylar balloon. Love is not a teddy bear holding a heart. Love is action and sometimes that action is hard to do.

“How The Best Leaders Insure A Healthy Staff Culture
So you’re a leader. It’s no accident. It’s just natural. Well, for most people
S. I. McMillen, in his book None of These Diseases. He tells a story of a young woman who wanted to go to college, but her heart sank when she read the question on the application blank that asked, “Are you a leader?” Being both honest and conscientious, she wrote, “No,” and returned the application, expecting the worst. To her surprise, she received this letter from the college: “Dear Applicant: A study of the application forms reveals that this year our college will have 1,452 new leaders. We are accepting you because we feel it is imperative that they have at least one follower.”

Here’s my favorite one. For a time, this was Nike’s vision statement. Crush Reebok.
John Wooden coached hundreds of great players, many of which became all Americans and went on to play in the NBA. He taught them how to shoot and play defense and rebound. He poured thousands of hours into these talented young men. But he always started with one simple lesson. Every year when he gathered his troops for the first time, he started with this lesson. He taught his players how to put on their socks.
John Wooden wasn’t known for his fiery half time speeches. He wasn’t known for his last second play calling. He didn’t pace the sidelines and yell and scream at his players to get them motivated. Most of the time he just sat there with a rolled up program in his hand. He wasn’t known for any of those things, but he was legendary in his preparation.
They are under the influence of The Holy Spirit. You cannot wring enough life or meaning out of secular accomplishment to satisfy your soul. The hole you are trying to fill has an eternal and spiritual dimension that only matters of eternity and spirituality can satisfy. This is why it is imperative that you discover and participate in God’s multifaceted vision for your life. It is what you were made for. Andy Stanley.
They make others feel valued. By recognizing the unique contribution of each person privately (and publicly) they fuel morale and a spirit of appreciation. Hint: Be specific with your compliments rather than a passing “good job” comment.
As I was writing this message I pulled out a book written by a friend of mine. Liberating Ministry from The Success Syndrome. His name is Kent Hughes and he has written over 20 books. He just recently retired. This book is about his biggest failure. He planted a church over 30 years ago it just beat him up. That little church that he considered a failure was the church I was going to when God got a hold of my life. Kent was a huge encouragement to me. I’ll always remember one moment in particular. I was with my parents and Kent put his hand on my shoulder and said, “This kids going to grow up and be a pastor someday.” I’ll never forgive him for that.
My elder board and I read a book this last year that I highly recommend. It’s called The Dream Manager, Matthew Kelly. Charlie wanted to climb Half Dome at Yosemite. We all called him from church
I spent my life trying to get people to notice me on the stage. Now I’m trying to be the stage.
The definitive leadership diagnostic tool is finally available. Its elegant simplicity is characteristic of pure science at its finest. To put it in lay terms, this theory maintains that all human beings fit into one of three basic leadership types as represented by this photo. There are three types of leader: the Moe personality type, the Larry personality type, or the Curly personality type. The Moe type is the person with a high need to be in charge. General Patton and Napoleon were Moes. All books with the words vision or leadership in the title are written by Moes. All popes are Moes.
The Larry type is a person who more or less hangs around waiting for Moe to disappear so he can take over. A “rising Moe.” as it were. Larrys often suffer from “delusion of Moe-ness.” All TV or radio talk show second bananas are Larrys. This is why they are so agreeable.
The Curly type doesn’t have a clue. True Curly types will never be anything but Curly types, and could not even tell you the difference between Moe and Larry perhaps due to repeated eye gouges and head slaps and blows from the occasional falling anvil.
The only really confusing part of this test is that the Stooge with curly hair is called Larry, while the Stooge called Curly had a crew cut with no curls at all. Don’t let this minor flaw deter you or influence your own personal hair style.
Of course, some of you have been in abusive situations where your stooge has not been valued. You may be interested in a book coming out this fall: Releasing Your Inner Stooge. And if you’re not happy with your particular stooge, just remember: It could be worse. You could have been born a Shemp. John Ortberg

Lesley Hyatt joins us for this episode on marriage. Between the three of us we have over 60 years of marriage experience. This is what we've learned.
Jesus was born in a stable. Jesus was raised to a city with no more than 50 houses on it on a four acre plot of land. Jesus never traveled more than 30 miles from his hometown. If there was an award for most likely to not succeed after his death it would have been given to Jesus. But that’s not what happened.
Every year since Jesus death his impact gets larger. Every year since his death more people follow him. Every year since his death his words and his stories and his ideals are told and retold to billions of people. He never held a title. Never made any money. Never owned a home. Didn’t live very long. We have no idea what he looked like.
It is in Jesus name than desperate people pray, grateful people worship and angry people swear. John Ortberg.
This podcast sounds like a Dr. Seuss book doesn’t it. It’s actually based on one of the most famous things that Jesus said, but let’s go with the Dr. Seuss theme for a second. I feel like Jack finally found some books that Jonathan may have read.
There is joy in generosity. What is the most generous thing that anyone has done for you or someone close to you?
Jackie is a wedding coordinator but she is a fashion designer as well. When Jackie found out about our adoption she suggested that we do a fashion show fundraiser to raise money for our adoption. I had no idea what that would look like but I said “sounds great. Let’s do it.” This is what it looked like. Jackie catered the whole event. She brought in a video game truck for the kids. She organized a fashion show with our high school kids. She should her designs and gave the proceeds to the adoption. Our friend party asked if she could run a silent auction and we said yes to that. At the end of the day, this wedding coordinator that I barely knew had raised $13000 for our adoption.
Years ago my daughter and I went to a golf tournament. Before we left we had to see Tiger Woods just once. This was pre-scandal Tiger Woods. She didn’t know anything about golf but she did know Tiger Woods. So we waited with the crowds behind the ropes that separated the green and the next fairway. After Tiger drained his put he handed his ball to his caddy Steve Williams. Then Steve handed the ball to my daughter. She was so stunned she didn’t know what to do. I tried to take it for her and Tigers caddy gave the greatest stink face of all time. Finally Paige took it and we went home. We were both thrilled. It was a prized possession. The next Christmas when our family was around the Christmas tree opening gifts, my daughter handed my son a small box. You can probably guess what was in the box, right? It was the Tiger Woods ball. It was a thrill to have my daughter get that ball. It was more of a thrill watch her generously give one of her prized possessions to my son.
The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. Proverbs 22:9
The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing. Psalm 37:21,22,25,26
I love these stories of generosity. I think we all would like to have more of these things happen in our lives. I think most of us would like to be able to be generous to the people around them.
If generosity is so great, why isn’t it more a part of our lives?
I think most people want to be generous. They want to give to others. They want to be involved in what God is doing in the world. But the reality is, they just don’t have the money.
I believe that generosity is not just a money issue. It’s an attitude issue. Generosity needs to be practiced. There needs to be a heart change.
Alfred D. Souza once said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
A friend of mine sent me this recently… “Stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday¬ night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you’ve had a drink, until you’ve sobered up, until you die to decide that there is no better time than right now to be content. Contentment is a journey, not a destination.”
A recent census study confirms that a little bit more is the goal of most Americans. When polled, Americans with household incomes under $25,000, it would take $54,000 a year to fulfill the American dream. Those who make $100,000 crave an average of $192,000. In other words, the American Dream usually lies nearly twice the distance away.
John Cheever writes “The main emotion of the average adult American who has all the advantages of wealth, education and culture is disappointment”
Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. Ecclesiastes 5:10
Luke 12:15″A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Where does contentment fit in this discussion of generosity?
Definition of contentment
: the quality or state of being contented
All day long we are bombarded with messages that seek to persuade us of two things: that we are (or ought to be) discontented and that contentment is only one step away:“use me, buy me, eat me, wear me, try me, drive me, put me in your hair.”The things you can buy for hair contentment alone are staggering: You can wash it, condition it, mousse it, dye it, curl it, straighten it, wax it if it’s growing where it shouldn’t, and Rogaine it if it’s not growing where it should. People are healthier, cleaner, richer, and better informed than ever. We live longer, eat better, dress warmer, work less, and play more than ever in the history of the human race. But are we happier? Or are we just cleaner, healthier, better-coifed discontents? The desperate chase after whatever Happy Meal we were pursuing turns out to have been a trivial pursuit. — Love Beyond Reason (John Ortberg)
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice… They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor. Psalm 112:5,9
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25
