Well, it's been a while but we are finally back! After a long hiatus, we thought it would be helpful to provide a quick update, but also take the time to explain the different theological disciplines. Essentially, we want to explain Biblical Theology, Systematic Theology, Historical Theology, and Practical Theology and how they relate.

We are back with another Critical Issues episode. Today, we have a very special guest, our good friend Dom, here to help us think through a Christian’s relationship to firearms. Owning a gun is a serious matter because it is a weapon of deadly force. Here in the States, the 2nd Amendment recognizes the rights of its citizens to own firearms. So, should Christians own and carry guns? What does the Bible say about self-defense and our relationship with the State?
There are Christians on both sides of the aisle who will fiercely defend their position. Some say it's our God-given right to have guns, while others say that owning such a deadly weapon is not in the spirit of a Christian ethic. Believe it or not, the Bible does give insight into this discussion and we want to provide those resources for you so that you can engage thoughtfully, as a Christian should. This is a bit of a longer episode so grab a snack or make some coffee.

- Q. Why must he be a true and righteous man?
A. He must be a true man
because the justice of God requires
that the same human nature which has sinned
should pay for sin.
He must be a righteous man
because one who himself is a sinner
cannot pay for others.
- Q. Why must he at the same time be true God?
A. He must be true God
so that by the power of his divine nature
he might bear in his human nature
the burden of God’s wrath,
and might obtain for us
and restore to us
righteousness and life.

who at the same time is true God

A. God demands that his justice be satisfied.
Therefore we must make full payment,
either by ourselves or through another.

A. Certainly not.
On the contrary, we daily increase our debt.
- Q. Can any mere creature pay for us?
A. No. In the first place,
God will not punish another creature
for the sin which man has committed.
Furthermore, no mere creature can sustain
the burden of God’s eternal wrath against sin
and deliver others from it.
- Q. What kind of mediator and deliverer
must we seek?
A. One who is a true and righteous man,
and yet more powerful than all creatures;
that is, one who is at the same time true God.

We've talked about how to disagree several times on this podcast. We have discussed it in terms of theology and we have talked about when we disagree personally with Scripture. This is not a podcast providing answers to those social issues, but rather one that looks at what the Bible has to say about unity, what undermines that unity and what are some principles we can employ to preserve it.

In today's episode we discuss questions 9, 10 and 11 of the Heidelberg Catechism.
- Q. But does not God do man an injustice
by requiring in his law what man cannot do?
A. No, for God so created man
that he was able to do it.
But man, at the instigation of the devil,
in deliberate disobedience,
robbed himself and all his descendants
of these gifts.
- Q. Will God allow such disobedience and apostasy to go unpunished?
A. Certainly not.
He is terribly displeased with our original sin
as well as our actual sins.
Therefore he will punish them
by a just judgment
both now and eternally, as he has declared:
Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law (Gal 3:10).
- Q. But is God not also merciful?
A. God is indeed merciful,
but he is also just.
His justice requires that sin committed
against the most high majesty of God
also be punished with the most severe,
that is, with everlasting, punishment of body and soul.

A. No, on the contrary, God created man good1 and in his image, that is, in true righteousness and holiness, so that he might rightly know God his Creator, heartily love him, and live with him in eternal blessedness to praise and glorify him.
- Q. From where, then, did man’s depraved nature come?
A. From the fall and disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, in Paradise, for there, our nature became so corrupt that we are all conceived and born in sin.
- Q. But are we so corrupt that we are totally unable to do any good and inclined to all evil?
A. Yes,1 unless we are regenerated by the Spirit of God.

In today's episode, we want to talk through what we should do when we read a passage of Scripture with which we disagree. Are we left to ourselves to figure it out or can we rely on people from the past who have wrestled through these issues themselves? We want argue that God has given the Church gifted theologians who can help us wrestle with those passages we are tempted to ignore or reinterpret because we don't like what they say. We are not on our own. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

A. From the law of God.
- Q. What does God’s law require of us?
A. Christ teaches us this in a summary in Matthew 22:
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart
and with all your soul
and with all your mind.1
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:
Love your neighbor as yourself.
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these
two commandments.
- Q. Can you keep all this perfectly?
A. No,1 I am inclined by nature
to hate God and my neighbor.
