Now often we make the mistake of seeing the Christmas story starting in Luke 2 with the travel to Bethlehem, but the amazing thing is that God did not invade this world in the form of a baby, but in the form of a fetus, a zygote, a single cell within a teenage girl. The incarnation actually happened about 9 months before the birth in Bethlehem… in the little town of Nazareth.
Luke often pairs male and female characters together, giving a symmetrical view of many stories. Opening the book with Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and Joseph and Anna and Simeon. Then there are parables – the men in the fields and the women kneading bread. The shepherd leaving going after the lost sheep then the woman sweeping her house for the lost coin. Men and women as traveling disciples in acts 8, men and women in the upper room in Acts 1, Ananias and Sappira, Priscilla and Aquilla. But the first is Elizabeth and Zechariah.
You can’t blame her. How could you? After all she never asked to be put into the situation she found herself in. Young, pregnant from another woman’s husband, abused by that same woman, and ignored by the father of the baby she was carrying.
"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
Then I saw "a new heaven and a new earth," for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown.
Revelation chapters 17 and 18, and the Fall of Babylon, an event that happens during the 2nd half of the tribulation.
The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.
All of heaven sits in amazement, along with the author of Revelation, John, to see what will unfold after Jesus opened the seals on the scroll.
In the book of John, he saw Jesus and pointed him out. "Behold, the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world."

Let’s not give because we feel guilty or think we can save the world, but because we are partnering with Jesus, and partnering with good, people and we are shining like stars in the universe as we hold out the world of life.

In times of uncertainty, people always want to predict the future. Especially when stocks are down, jobs are lost, health could be in a crisis.
Many people feel imprisoned by the quarantine. It really is a kind of a house arrest. You are not able to see the grandkids. You can’t hang out with your buds from school. Movie theaters and church and sport events are cancelled. It is a kind of a prison.
When God interrupts, he interrupts your selfishness, your self sufficiency, your self aggrandizement. He interrupts your petty dreams and your past abuses and your old dysfunctions. He interrupts your bad ways of thinking and your unhealthy relationships. He interrupts to put you on a new path… a path of joy, of relationships, of supernatural connection with him.
You can’t do it. No morality is strong enough to break the back of death. Only Jesus is. Only Jesus takes the broken pieces of our dead bodies and our dead morality and breathes his life into us – giving us a new body and a new soul.
This world is not the way it was meant to be. God did not design us for wars. He did not design us for sneaking around and telling lies. He didn’t design us for abuse. For betrayal. For selling little girls into slavery to do unspeakable things. He didn’t design us for disease either.

In order to understand how the story unfolds from here, you need to know that in Acts 8:1, a great persecution breaks out. The church was all pretty much in Jerusalem at that time. Likely 10,000 people were following Jesus and the authorities did not like it. So they began killing Christians like Stephen and throwing them in jail.

Being a consumer is natural, being a contributor goes against the grain. Our nature is not inherently altruistic, our nature is inherently selfish.
There is a strong correlation between generosity and sharing your faith. This is true in culture because in a very real way, sharing your faith is spiritual generosity.

In 1926, physicist Theodor Kaluza proposed a very strange thing: the idea that there might be more than three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. In other words, what we experience as back and forth, left and right, and up and down. And this theory, while crazy in 1926, has gained great popularity in this century because of the smallest things in existence.
God created some things to be irresistible. Jesus is irresistible—only guy to raise from the dead, compassionate, breaks social convention, brings good news and loves people… irresistible.

Knowing that His time had come, Jesus spent His last few hours with His disciples. Scripture tells he knew everything that was going to happen to him. His dread was so palpable that even as an angel came and ministered to Him, His horror at enduring the full fury of God was such that he sweated drops of blood. This condition, known as hematidrosis, is the effusion of blood from veins. Under extreme distress, capillaries just under the skin dilate and burst, mingling blood with sweat. When He said, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," it was literal.
He never invited neutrality. His followers called Him the Christ. His contenders called Him a blasphemer. Some were drawn to Him, while others could muster nothing in His presence but contempt. His teachings were revolutionary and His miracles undeniable. He claimed nothing less than equality with God and proclaimed Himself as the long expected Messiah.
If God’s prophets were meant to be peculiar, John the Baptist did not disappoint. Eccentric is too mild a description for this wilderness dwelling preacher who wore odd clothes and lacked both a sense of tact and a balanced diet. His message, though, was right in step with a long line of prophetic predecessors. He called for Israel’s repentance and baptized the penitent in the Jordan River.

It’s no surprise that the Hebrew people were homesick after 70 years of foreign captivity. At this point, it had been 80 years since King Cyrus first gave the green light for the exiles to return to their beloved Jerusalem.
King Xerxes of Persia had reason to party. His vast empire was powerful and prosperous. His queen was lovely. His palace was ideal for a celebration befitting such a monarch. His merrymaking continued for six months when Xerxes summoned Queen Vashti so he could put her on display for the inebriated revelers. She refused. With his advisers’ support, he stripped Vashti of her crown and banished her from his presence.
After generations of idolatry, God’s people had been defeated by the empires that controlled the ancient world. The Assyrians had conquered the Northern kingdom, deported the people, and re-populated the land with exiles from other countries. Their practice was to redistribute people from conquered nations throughout their vast empire. The foreigners who were resettled in northern Israel intermarried with the few remaining Jews and became the half-breed Samaritans.
Judah’s best and brightest were deported to Babylon when Jerusalem was conquered by Nebuchadnezzar’s armies. Daniel and his trio of friends were among their ranks. King Nebuchadnezzar introduced them to their new homeland by enrolling the four young men in his exclusive three-year "How to Live Like a Babylonian" Training Academy.
This Christmas Eve as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we want to slow down from the busyness surrounding this season, unplug from the distractions that are constantly competing for attention, and gather for Simply Christmas.

Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to his people, a new covenant paradigm in which the presence of God would now reside in the lives of believers and empower them for the gospel mission. Acts 2:41-47 is a snapshot what this Holy Spirit indwelled and empowered people looked like. A people whose lives were so radically changed by the message of salvation through Jesus and the promise of his Spirit that they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship. When people saw this gospel-centered community in action, they saw Jesus. "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."
God isn’t simply calling us to "a new, improved and better" life. He’s calling us to a radically "different" life. Christianity is really not about doing life better, it’s about doing life different. When Christians live different, the world experiences hope!
Women have always been on the forefront of Spiritual Progress. I want to introduce you to the greatest evangelist in all four gospels. You might think she is a superstar. If she was, that would hardly be helpful for most of us who master in average. She is not a heroin. She is actually a person who has lived full throttle in the pain of life.
What did Jesus actually accomplish on the cross? Yes, he paid for our sins and reconciled us to God, but there’s another dimension to the cross that we often overlook. In this message we’ll explore how Jesus’ death transforms our relationships with one another, and why the cross—and not a shared vision, leader, or culture—is what ought to unite the church.
Like many of you I get a bit overwhelmed with the talk/focus on sexuality in our media these days. The pain and carnage is palatable and I don’t think it is going away. God took an incredible risk in creating.us sexual beings. Sexuality has great power, Power to wound and destroy, but also power to bring joy and even life. Sexuality is a good gift, it is about desire, it is what motivates us to move toward others and build relationships. It gives a sense of wonder, of mystery; it stimulates a longing for transcendence, and has the power to give us a glimpse of the goodness of God.
Names have a deep emotional connection for us, don’t they. Good, bad, controversial. Today we take a look at the one name that is above every name—Jesus.
90% of people seek counseling because they’re lonely. What is community? A place I have relationship? What does deep community look like?
Jesus walks on water (Matthew 14:22–32, Genesis 1:1-2, Exodus 3:13-14)
Water is often a symbol of chaos and godlessness. For Jesus to walk on water makes a statement that He is GOD, and that He is not subject to the physical laws of this world as you and I are. So on the one hand, He is transcendent over nature and evil.
On the other hand, He is within an arm’s length of Peter when he falls. He is here and within reach. Peter takes the audacious step of faith to come to Jesus and walk on the water himself! It isn’t until his eyes are taken off the Lord’s eyes does he succumb to the reality of the wind and water. "Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him." What a great illustration of how God has reached out His divine hand to humanity to pull us out of the grip of chaos which sin has created.
Can Jesus really heal? Scripture teaches us that He has and that healing continues to be an active role in the ministry of the Holy Spirit to this day. In the case of the bleeding woman, she had suffered this ailment for twelve years. It cost her everything she had, and in spite of all the wisdom of the doctors of the age, she still suffered and did not get well. It wasn’t until this woman made a courageous, faith-filled step to reach out and touch the hem of Jesus’ garment that she experienced the healing power of Jesus firsthand. Why does God heal some and not others? What about modern-day medicine? Are there any commonalities found within examples in Scripture where people are healed (laying on of hands, anointing with oil, prayer…)?
What is it like to experience hopelessness? People who are without hope rarely press into God or make progress in life. But real hope drives a different kind of life momentum and leads to faith-filled behaviors that, in turn, drive us toward God. People need hope that they can endure a trial, find a job, beat an addiction, or heal a marriage. True hope "the hope of Jesus "never disappoints, because it is founded in the truth of Him.

John 8:31-32 and Matthew 25 Discipleship is not just about knowing and being, it is also about doing. Jesus said "You are my disciples if you hold to my teachings." Pretty simple to understand. Pretty hard to do. For example, just flip to the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25. Did you visit in prison? Did you feed? Clothe? Water? Care for hurting? Jesus asks you to do these things. Are you? Do you even read his teachings to remember what they are? Bible reading will be emphasized, but even more so… Bible obedience.

Jonathan has just told David that it is not safe to come home. David is alone and on the run. He goes to the priests at Nob and lies about his situation. He negotiates for the holy bread and takes Goliath’s sword as his own. (Note, this implies he has no food and no weapons). He then has to go to Philistine territory (Gath) to get away from Saul and act like a madman to avoid being killed by the Philistine king. This must be the lowest of the low for David. It is before his band of followers gathers around him. He is alone, lying, and pretending just to survive. What are your points of pain? What are you doing just to survive? What do you need to surrender?

Whether we're bound up with the sin of a prodigal or the pride of an older brother, God's plan and purpose is to forgive us, set us free, and throw a party for His children.
Racial division is just one of the many outcomes of the enemy's work in our communities. Love can break those walls, enabling us to honor, dialogue, and connect with one another.
God's love is a love that comes down without condition. His love can come in us, and flow through us to trance end the normal barriers of human love. When you give yourself to the giver of love he will begin to do a good work inside of you, and even redefine who you are.
Death - who was our mortal enemy, death - who was public enemy number one can be defeated by the love of the universe. This is the central idea of Jesus' life, and the central idea of the resurrection.
