Our first broadcast of the 2018 High School football season brings us to Milford for a big matchup between the Titans of Sheehan and the Lawmen of Johnny Law!
This was a battle from the opening puck drop. Hamden brought their gritty, physical style of play to the Milford Ice Pavilion to take on the Lancers of ND. After an early 2nd period powerplay goal by Mason Boyhen, it remained a one goal game until early in the 3rd period. Hamden, off a beautiful shot by Routh, scored their 2nd goal of the game which went down as an insurance marker. Boyhen's great work throughout the game and on the powerplay to score the first and game-winning goal earned Mason the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game honors as Hamden takes the W 2-0 over ND Fairfield!
Guilford Indians took on a short handed Trinity Catholic team but that didn't cause "Gang Green" stop playing their game. They only took 1 penalty all game long in a matchup that was blown open early. Trinity Catholic kept it a 1 goal game for most of the period until Guilford broke it open to make it a 3-0 lead heading into the 1st period intermission. Guilford vamped up their pressure in the 2nd period and never looked back. Led by Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, John DeLucia who netted a hatrick along with 2 assists, Guilford went on to win 10-1!
In a game that had it all... rivalry, defense, scoring, the unscripted moments, and of course a perfect ending for the home fans. Foran and Jonathan Law clashed in a battle that more than lived up to its hype. In the end, Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game was too clutch and made the right shots at the right time as the Lawmen of Jonathan Law beat Foran 62-57. With the win, Law has punched their ticket to the Conference and State postseason play!
This game started and ended physical. NFI jumped out to a an early 1-0 lead but it was quickly answered by ND with a goal coming on the powerplay. Jameson Brown had an answer for the answer as he scored a beautiful goal putting his team up 2-1. Matt Carlucci was able to sneak one past the ND netminder for an insurance tally but it was the overall play and timely goal by the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Jameson Brown, that pushed NFI over the top. The Mustangs continue their successful season with the 3-1 over ND-Fairfield!
After Guilford won the first matchup between these two teams in Cheshire, the Indians are looking to complete the season sweep of the Rams. However, Cheshire would not easily hand the game over as they are out looking for revenge. In the end, the pressure from the fans at the Wigwam and the performance by Ian Slattery, especially his 13 points in the 3rd quarter where drained a few 3's, was too much for the Rams to handle. Backed by 17 second half points from Ian Slattery, who was named the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Guilford finished off Cheshire 65-55 for the season series sweep!
65-55
It was Senior Night for the Foran Lions and the crowd was roaring from the very beginning. This game was a thriller as the lead went back and forth. Shelton had a monster 3rd quarter scoring 21 points and claiming a lead heading into the 4th. Foran would not be phased or denied from pleasing their fans on Senior Night. Fighting back, the Lions only needed to make 2 field goals in the 4th to earn a win. Shelton went cold in the 4th and Foran's Senior Guard, Matt Cruz, stepped up in a big way. He fought hard down low and earned a number of trips to the line as well as the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game honors. Foran, with only 2 two point field goals, overcame a 4th quarter deficit to capture a 63-57 win at home on Senior Night!
It's Senior Night in North Haven as the Indians hosted the Daniel Hand Tigers. North Haven lost 4 straight games entering this game with the Tigers, who took the first contest between these two.
The hype for Senior Night carried over as the North Haven Indians played through a grind 'em out kind of game. It was a low scoring affair but the Indians played smart basketball down the stretch and Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Jake Lafond, nailed a number of clutch buckets to deliver his a team a 43-36 win over Hand and ending the 4-game skid!
It was a battle of two great coaches as much as it was a battle of two great teams! Amity traveled to the House of Pain to take on the East Haven Coop team. This game was a great as we expected it to be. In our second overtime hockey broadcast of the season, Amity pulls out a big victory. Jason Csejka, the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, was huge in this game scoring both of Amity's goals including a quick game winner in the overtime period to give the Spartans a 2-1 OT win over the Yellowjackets!
In our first trip to Shelton, the Gaels had a monster night on Senior Night. Shelton's record does not reflect the kind of talent they have on the team and it show in this one. Hosting a talented East Haven team that is still searching for the magic number 8 wins so they were hungry but they could not keep up with the incredible shooting percentage that the Gaels posted. After jumping out to a very fast start, Shelton never looked back. Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Kyle Davis, who is a Senior PG for the Gaels finished with 23 points in the win!
This game was simply sensational. In a game that featured two teams that practice out of the same rink, the North Haven Indians played host to the North Branford T-Birds. T-Birds netminder, John Lovelace stole the show stopping 37 out of 39 shots to keep his team in the lead by the time the final buzzer rang. For his impressive performance in net, Lovelace was named the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game as North Branford wins 3-2 over their same-rink rival!
Platt Tech comes into Whitney Tech missing Tyler Dowdy but the Owls did not feel sorry in the least bit. Whitney Tech battled all night long in a game they needed to win. Both teams got into foul trouble but Jadakys Ward was one of the only constants. Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Jadakys Ward, finished the game strong and ended up with 11 points to seal the must win game for Whitney Tech!
In our first appearance at Sheehan HS this season, the Cheshire Rams seek a needed win against a very good Titans team. The Lady Titans would not have any of Cheshire's push for the playoffs as Olivia Robles had a monster night! Liv finished the game with 23 points, taking home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game award as well as leading her team to a 67-53 win!
At the Milford Ice Pavilion, the Milford Coop Indians hosted the Hand Tigers. In a wild game, the Indians found themselves trailing 2-0 after the 1st period. Milford regrouped the intermission and jumped out in the second period to score 3 unanswered and a total of 5 goals in the 2nd period. They weren't done as they finished off the job in the 3rd period to put Hand away with an 8-4 win!
Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Freshman Ryan Ahern, registered his first High School hatrick to lead Milford Coop to a much needed victory!
It's the Green Bowl on the hard court as the Green Dragons host the Green Knights! In a great game, Hamden trailed ND after the 3rd quarter but they would not be denied from getting their 11th win on the year. Jaylen Ricks was cold blooded from the foul line when the game was on the line. The Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Ricks, was 6/6 from the foul line in the 4th. His clutch performance pushed Hamden to a 67-62 victory!
Although the final score of 62-46. does not reflect it, Thursday Guilford got all it could handle with visiting Amistad. Both teams exhausted themselves on defense, with Amistad dominating the first half and into the 3rd quarter. At one point Amistad was leading by a slim margin!
That's when Guilford's Colin Kellaher hit 2 three pointers almost in succession in the middle of the 3rd to put Guilford up by 6 and give them a lead that they would not relinquish.
Noah Rubino led Guilford with 19, "Hummel HotDog Player of the Game" Colin Kellaher added 11 points and Josh Krause had 10. For Amistad Cyprien Joseph had 15 points and AJ added 11.
Wednesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion saw the top 2 teams in Division 3 based on the WELI “Great 8” Poll in a playoff like atmosphere. Fans of both teams came in droves to to make their presence and their passion felt.
The night however would belong to Lyman Hall. Making a strong claim to the top spot in Division 3, the Trojans defeated Staples 4-1 in convincing fashion. After falling behind early 1-0 Lyman Hall would use 4 unanswered goals to pull ahead and never look back. “Hummel HotDog Player of the Game” Kyle Roberts would have a hand in every goal as he scored two of the four goals and assisted on the other two scored by “Glenwood Drive-in Top Dog” winner Matt Petit.
The Cheshire Rams traveled to Woodbridge Monday night to take on the Amity Spartans in a rematch of their game from earlier this month. This game would not be the nail biter of the previous game, but it would be a close affair nonetheless.
Cheshire would take control of the game in the 2nd quarter where “Hummel HotDog Player of the Game” Will Graikowski would score 7 of his 10 1st half points as the Rams would take a 29-20 lead into halftime. Their lead would get a high as 16 before Amity would make a late run and bring the game to single digits, but Cheshire weathered the run and finished with a 61-57 win to notch their 8th win of the season qualifyig for post season play!
In a game where the final score does not indicate how close the contest was, the NFI Mustangs clobbered Amity at the Bennett Rink! After giving up the first goal of the game, NFI fought back and received a lot of help from a Sophomore, Joe Robinson, to score 7 unanswered goals. Joe Robinson, the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, chipped in a goal and tallied an assist as well as his two points came at the point of the game that the outcome was uncertain.
After Robinson pushed the Mustangs out in front, they never looked back as they cruised to a 7-1 win!
These all-tech school battles are always good games and this one did not disappoint. Hosting the Indians of Wilcox Tech, the Panthers delivered a strong performance on their home court to send the Platt Tech fans home happy! Tyquell Cadle stayed aggressive on both ends of the court and was as clutch as can be from the charity strike down the stretch.
Cadle, who played well enough to take home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game honors, finished with 13 points including a plethora of 4th quarter free throws to seal the 67-62 win for Platt Tech!
In a big match-up at the FLAC (Floyd Little Athletic Center), the Govenors of Wilbur Cross hosted the Panthers of Career. Kwane Taylor paced his Wilbur Cross offense and played some strong defense to lead his team to victory.
Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Kwane Taylor racked up 20 points in route to a 57-50 win over Career!
Jonathan Law played host to the Trojans of Lyman Hall and the Lady Lawmen had to play with a depleted bench due to a couple girls being out sick. The lack of depth on the bench did not seem to matter as Jonathan Law got a clutch performance from Cali Jolley and eked out a 56-54 win.
Jolley, who finished with 19 points, took home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game award!
It's the Easties and company taking on the Westies at the Shrine of High School Hockey, aka the Edward L. Bennett Rink. What a game this was as it led to our first overtime broadcast of the season. Zach Paquin found some space in the OT period and received a pass from Spiers to set himself up on a breakaway with a chance to win the game on his stick. Paquin did not disappoint as he let go a beautiful wrister and it sizzled past WH's Logan Cole to find the top shelf to conclude this thriller and give the Yellow Jackets their 4th straight win of the year!
Amity plays the part of the visitors as they take on West Haven in a Battle for the Bennett. Before the game, there was a touching tribute to celebrate the life of the late Rob Fumiatti, who had ties to both teams but played for West Haven. The Blue Devils honored Fumiatti and his family and retired the number 8, which was Rob's number when he played. Once the game started, both teams made Rob Fumiatti proud by leaving everything they had on the ice. The difference maker in the game was the Spartans' goalie, Tyler Cole, who stopped 34 of 35 shots to take home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game award and, more importantly, give his team the win!
The Platt Tech Panthers welcomed the 960 WELI team with open arms, posting signs all over the school. On top of that, they came to play on the court. The Panthers forced the Owls of Whitney Tech to commit far too many turnovers and Tyler Dowdy, our Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, had a great night scoring a number of points inside and also displayed a soft touch and range on a couple 3's. Platt Tech rolls through Whitney Tech in our first all-tech school broadcast of the year!
The East Haven Lady Yellow Jackets were looking to keep their roll going against the Green Dragons of Hamden. Dominant is not a strong enough word to describe the game McKenzie Helms had for EH. She was simply incredible play solid defense and even better offense, which helped East Haven jump on top of Hamden and cruise to their 8th victory of the year!
Amity welcomed the North Haven Indians to the Bennett Rink and Amity's goalie, Michael Holloway, was amazing as he made every save the Spartans needed him to make in order to win the game!
East Haven gets their first victory of the season in their home opener! Hosting a talented Staples team, EH Coop was led offensively by newcomer Matt Henderson while goaltender Matt Twarowski shut down the Wreckers offensive to give the Yellow Jackets a win and put an end to their 3 game winless streak.
The Guilford Indians played amazing defense and dominated the boards both defensively and offensively which led to a lot of points in the paint. The Indians cruised to their 8th win of the season which guarantees them a spot in postseason play!
Hamden hosted the West Haven Blue Devils to open up 2018 and the Green Dragons showed that this year is the Year of the TEAM! With an impressive display of passing and court vision, Hamden gelled as a team to defeat the sharpshooting Blue Devils. West Haven kept the game close the entire time but Hamden never let the boys in Blue fully make the comeback. Hamden got out to an early lead and it fluctuated as the game progressed but never returned to a tie game or a West Haven lead. The Green Dragons dominated the play in the paint and had half the amount of turnovers that West Haven committed (18) finishing with 9 on the game. On top of that, Ryan Ellis, the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, was unstoppable from mid-range. Superior elevation and a sweet stroke gives Ellis a jumper that will make the greatest basketball teachers smile. At the end of the day, the ball security along with an sensational team performance and you have a 17 point win for Hamden as they move to 4-0.
Milford ended 2017 on a high note beating Shepaug Valley Coop 5-2. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead, Shepaug answered the bell and then some. Not only did the visitors tie the score at 1 but they jumped out to the early lead in the 2nd period. Milford answered with a goal of their own less than 2 minutes later and they never looked back. After tying the game and regaining their 1st period form, the Indians continued to tack on 3 more goals to put the well traveled coop team away for good!
The Guilford girls had to grind to their 58-48 win over Coginchaug. The first half saw them all out of sorts. Their team Captain Julia Hyman was in early foul trouble, their trademark execution not their and their defense uncharacteristically allowing easy baskets. Add in Guilford missing free throws and wide open layups, and you get a 29-17 halftime deficit.
The second half was a different story. The Lady Indians strapped in and turned up the defensive intensity and fought their way back into the game. To hear player of the game Molly Linell (13 points, 11 in the 2nd half)tell it, "We knew that we didn't play well and we knew that we could come back."
She wasn't kidding. Her 3 pointer with less than 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter sparked a run to a lead that they would never relinquish. The victory kept Guilford undefeated on the season and handed Coginchaug their first loss of the season.
From the opening tip-off, the Guilford Indians dominated the out-matched Owls from Whitney Tech. Whitney Tech certainly gave a great effort but the size advantage was clearly evident as Noah Rubino had himself a day. The future Siena College product came to play as he dropped 17 points and collected well over 10 rebounds in the game as well. One of just many double-doubles in Noah's high school career as he took home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game for his outstanding performance!
West Haven opened up the game on a mission and were flying all over the ice. The Blue Devils created a lot of offensive pressure in the first five minutes of the game only to have that momentum pull a 180. It was the Mustangs of Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe who struck first off the stick of their dynamic defenseman, Will Von Braushtich. He led the team in scoring as he racked up 2 goals and 3 assists in a 7-4 win.
The final score of this game doesn't reflect how dominant the Mustangs were. After the initial flurry of pressure from West Haven to start the game, the only other times they got things going were on the man advantage and the beginning of the 3rd period. Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe's goalie, Will Capalbo, was simply sensational. He was peppered with 34 shots stopping 30 of them but he made every single big-time save that he needed to make. There were a number a chances during the attempted comeback that could have resulted in a goal for the Blue Devils, which could've changed the outcome of the game. Instead, Capalbo stood on his head to take home the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game award and effectively robbed West Haven at the chance for a win.
Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe starts their season off 1-0 after the 7-4 win over West Haven!

Guilford traveled on the road to play the up and coming Lawmen of Jonathan Law as the rejuvenated program with their new head coach, Jamie Anderson, looks to build a solid basketball season riding the wave of school pride coming from the successful football season.
The Indians, however, were not phased. They came out and sustained a great shooting percentage all game long. The stars that were wearing Guilford green came to play as Rubino, Slattery, and Dombroski all had fantastic games. The latter of that list having the best game of the night claiming the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game award. Sam Dombroski was simply unstoppable in the paint collecting a ridiculous number of rebounds and had himself a large chuck of the Guilford point total as well.
Check out all of the video highlights below and listen to Coach DeMaio talk to Dombroski and Guilford's Head Coach, Jeff DeMaio (Yes, they are related which always makes for an entertaining conversation!).
The Foran Lions host Tyler Thomas and the Amity Spartans in this Tuesday night affair. Foran's Gentley had his way on the glass which helped give the Lions a big lead early but the Spartans would not be phased. Led by superstar Tyler Thomas, Amity not only fought back but claimed a 36-22 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Foran Lions faced a steady dose of "Mr. Lethal" aka Tyler Thomas, who not only made an impact for his team with his 3-point shooting but also set a 960 WELI Broadcast Record for the Most 3's Made By A Single Player with 9.
Once Amity built up their lead, they never looked back as the Spartans went on to win 61-42 over Foran to move to 1-0 on the year!
Be sure to check out all the highlights of the game below. You can also check out the interview with the Hummel Hotdog Player of the Game, Tyler Thomas.
West Haven had the 3 going early and often running out to a 42-27 halftime lead. With contributions from Marquel Bookert (15pts, 12 in the 1st half), and Toma Brown (13pts, all in the 1st half), the Westies 10 of 17 from 3 point range that powered a 26-14 2nd qtr en route to what most believed would be a blowout first game.
However, the Cheshire Rams led by Matt Rosadino and Aidan Godfrey(13 pts each) , were able to weather the storm and stay together to execute team basketball. The plan worked, as Cheshire took advantage of West Haven's cold spell and grind back into cutting the a deficit that was many as 16 down to a singe point.
Looking to stem the tide, West Haven turned to "Hummel Hot Dog Player of the Game" Josiah Steinman to carry them home. Steinman (15 pts), held to one point in the first half due to foul trouble, put the team on his back and scored 14 of his 15 points in the 2nd half, including 12 in the 4th qtr! His clutch scoring late in the game help West Haven secure 70-64 victory for their 1st win of the season!

The 2017-18 High School Hockey season began with a very entertaining game between the boys of Amity vs BBD (Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury). Amity came out fast with a goals from Colin Hughes(goal, ast), and Jason Csejka(goal, ast) in the 1st period and would never look back as they early momentum to their 1st win of the hockey season.
BBD goalie Steven Fanning would do all that he could to keep BBD in the game. He would be faced with several fast break from Amity and he managed to come up with some excellent saves that even Amity acknowledged were unbelieveable! But in the end it was too much, as he fought bravely against Amity team that was attacking the zone for most of the night!

It may not have been the way they drew it up, but the Guilford girls Basketball team will take it any way they can get it. Despite both teams committing more than 20 turnovers each, it was Guilford that found a way to gut out a 46-31 win over Lyman Hall for their first win of he season.
Lyman Hall, led by Kailey Lipka (13pts), did try to make a game of it. However, they were just not willing to go inside and try to get points in the paint. Rather, they settled for moving the ball around the perimeter, hoping they would be able to find and open outside shot. That, coupled with the massive amount of turnovers, and Lyman Hall dug themselves a hole that would bury them in the end.
Guilford did not fare much better. Although the point guard play of Julia Hyman(13 pts) steadied Guilford as they themselves were looking for some consistent offense. Hyman's tough defense, forcing turnovers, and her leadership on the floor was the guiding force in Guilford starting the season in a positive direction.
