When you're coming in to get fitted for your hearing aid the first time it is always best to bring someone close to you. It could be a family member, spouse or even a friend. The reason why is when you are getting fitted there is going to be a lot of information thrown at you that you might not remember initially. We are always here to answer any questions you may have after the fitting but we recommend a second person at the appointment that also can help you remember some crucial information. You're going to learn how to operate your device, how to put it on, etc. Not only that, but you're going to start to hear soft sounds that you might not be used to initially and this might overwhelm you at first. The big question I get asked is can I inherit hearing loss from my family? In other words, is hearing loss Genetic? The short answer is YES. The National Institute of Health says that 1 out of every 1,000 babies inherits their parents hearing loss. But not all is lost, the best thing to do is to try and catch the hearing loss early. In today's episode of The Hearing Breakdown, hearing specialist Christopher Medina gives us an inside look at a hearing aid fitting appointment from start to finish.
Watch how hearing aids are molded to its user and follow along as Chris programs his clients hearing aids according to their audiogram. Once the hearing devices are on, the next step is to adjust the hearing levels to the patient's comfortability level. This process could take up to 2 more visits to get it just right, but this is normal and also a reason why we like to offer 7-day trials to factor in that adjustment period.

An audiogram is a graph of information of someone's hearing abilities.
When you see the graph, on the y-axis (left-hand side), you'll see your hearing levels in decibels. On the x-axis (right side) you'll see the frequencies in hertz.
When you get to a hearing aid dispensers office and take your hearing test you'll see a blue and red line. The red line represents your red line and the blue line represents your left ear.
In terms of the hearing levels:
0-20 is considered normal hearing
20-40 you have a mild hearing loss
40-70 you have a moderate hearing loss
70-90 is severe hearing loss
90 and above is considered a profound hearing loss.

Before we share with you guys our new episode later this week we wanted to inform you once more what the initial hearing loss signs are so you can be aware if you or anyone around you is experiencing these symptoms you can catch it early! It is always better to handle it sooner rather than later. With that said, here are the 3 main signs that you (or someone you know) is losing their hearing.
Tinnitus: This is a ringing sound in your ear. You hear this mostly when things are quite. 25 million Americans experience this in one form or another and 90% of those cases have a degree of hearing loss!
How we hear others: This can come up with you're asking people to repeat themselves. If you're also in a noisy environment and cannot follow along in the majority of the conversation.
Device volume: Do you turn up your devices too loud? Maybe your loved ones keep telling you to turn down the TV. This can also happen when you find yourself putting your headphones to max capacity.

Is the Livio Edge AI Custom Rechargeable worth it? We break it down for you in this video. These hearing aids have a really unique feature called "Edge Mode" which uses artificial intelligence to optimize noise management and reduce background noise in challenging listening environments. You also don't need batteries for them- just put them on the base (which holds up to 3 days worth of charges) and they'll charge up. Today, we're giving you a 2021 mid-year update on what's going on with hearing aids and the mask. (1) We're seeing increased demand in custom hearing aids that only go inside the ear. That's because it can be uncomfortable and frustrating to wear hearing aids with your mask. An audiogram is a graph of information of someone's hearing abilities.
When you see the graph, on the y-axis (left-hand side), you'll see your hearing levels in decibels. On the x-axis (right side) you'll see the frequencies in hertz.
When you get to a hearing aid dispensers office and take your hearing test you'll see a blue and red line. The red line represents your red line and the blue line represents your left ear.
In terms of the hearing levels:
0-20 is considered normal hearing
20-40 you have a mild hearing loss
40-70 you have a moderate hearing loss
70-90 is severe hearing loss
90 and above is considered a profound hearing loss.

Here is how to insert different hearing aids into your ear. I'm going to show you the following styles: BTE (Behind the ear): This device comes with a custom earmold and that is what you put in first. Also, make sure to not pull on the tubbing. Receiver in the canal: Instead of a custom earmold (like the BTE) this model comes with an ear dome and that is what you insert in first. Custom ITE (In the ear); This one you put in the canal part first then the helix part second. ITC (In the canal model): This model is one of the easiest because they are custom and can slide right into your ear. CIC (Completely in the canal): These come with a removal string to pull out easier. You can also use that string to insert the device. Open your ear and simply add inside. IIC (Invisible in the canal): This one can also slide right into place and is the most discrete hearing aid!

Starkey Halo 2: This can connect with Apple devices and could stream to both sides! This does have a rechargeable option as well.

Hearing aids can be an investment and here at Virtue Haering, we want to educate you on how to properly care for your devices so you can get the most out of them! Custom styles: These styles can be cleaned with a brush that comes with most of these styles. You can also get a hearing aid spray, grab a cloth, and wipe down your hearing aid to disinfect it. Receiver in the canal style: These styles don't need too much maintenance. All you'll need to do is get the dome and get soap and water. Rechargeable hearing aids usually need to be charged every day, however once they are fully charged can get up to 24 hours of usage.
Hearing aids with batteries usually last one week which means you will have to change them out every week.
One of the benefits of using rechargeable hearing aids is that you will never have to buy batters. Which in our case, we have a set of 60 batteries for $30 at the time of this recording.
Another benefit of rechargeable hearing aids is avoiding dexterity issues due to replacing the battering in the device every time. As opposed to rechargeable sets that only need to be placed on the charging dock.
Also if you travel often you won't have to worry about bringing batteries with you. Even if you are in an area where there are no wall adapters such as camping you can use a battery pack to charge them.
Lastly, rechargeable batteries are eco-friendly to the environment as well.

Some people might buy them from Craigslist, Offer up, Facebook Marketplace and many other places.
If you are thinking about buying USED hearing aids here are some things you need to look out for:
1) Do your research: Know the difference between a hearing aid and hearing amplifier.
Did you know, you could only buy a new hearing aid at a licensed hearing aid dispenser. Don't get tricked into buying
2) Make sure the device is from a well known brand such as: Unitron, Starkey, Signia etc.
3) Don't buy custom hearing aids: These are molded to the original owners ear and not yours. They might not fit you and you might spend a good amount of money to remold the device. It might be best to buy a new one.
4)Check to see if the hearing aid device actually functions before you complete your purchase. This will help you avoid potential repair costs.
Check to see if the batteries are chargeable or not.
5) Even when you buy used hearing aids you STILL need to see a hearing aid specialist to customize the settings to your hearing needs.

In this episode Christopher Medina goes through the steps on what the process is in terms of getting your hearing aid fitted once you come into a hearing aid dispenser such as Virtue Hearing.
What will you expect when you get your hearing aids fitted?
Christopher will walk you through the fitting by fitting himself with a receiver in the ear canal using the Widex Evoke hearing aid device.
Step 1: Conduct a hearing test.
Step 2: Those results will go into our software and into the hearing aid to adjust those levels into your custom hearing aid.
Step 3: We add the hearing aid onto the patient.
Step 4: We connect the hearing aid to the computer and adjust the settings based on the patients hearing levels and comfortability. This is called a "First Fit".
The software will then ask a series of questions based on your lifestyle and experience with hearing aids.
Step 5: Run the feedback manager. This is meant to reduce any feedback you are experiencing.
Step 6: We keep adjusting until the patient lets us know it is now comfortable for them.
Step 7: We schedule a follow up appointment to double check all is going well with your hearing aid.

1) Do they constantly ask you to repeat yourself?
Many times when people are first experiencing hearing loss they can hear but are starting to not understand!
