Mike Smith welcomes Julia Tai, Music Director of Missoula Symphony to The Lunchbox . The new season for Missoula Symphony kicks off with "Struggle & Triumph" September 23rd & 24th at the Dennison Theatre in Missoula.
This will be an evening of power, emotion, and triumph, featuring Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Hiawatha Overture, which draws inspiration from the 1855 poem The Song of Hiawatha by American Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Hiawatha Overture also draws inspiration from the soundtrack to Rachmaninoff’s journey out of depression and darkness, and ascension into true joy, performed by rising star pianist, Charlie Albright. The evening concludes with Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3 in C minor, which was commissioned and composed at the height of the Great Depression and expresses stylistic themes at times reminiscent of Wagner, and at other times, Shostakovich.

Michael Legg, Artistic Director of the Montana Repertory Theatre and Rep actor Stephen Blotzke stop by the Trail lunchbox for a visit with host Mike Smith. Established in 1967 and currently celebrating its 57th season, The Rep serves as the resident professional theatre for the University of Montana.
Performances of the season opener The Odyssey will take place at The Zootown Community Arts Center (ZACC) in Missoula September 1 at 7:00pm and September 2 at 2:00pm. The Odyssey follows the journey of Odysseus as he encounters Cyclops, sirens, and more on his 10-year voyage home after the Trojan War. Oglesby’s adaptation condenses this sprawling tale into a fast- paced, slapstick comedy performed by a small ensemble of three actors playing dozens of characters. Through imaginative storytelling and physical comedy, the play captures the poetry and tragedy of the original work while making it accessible to modern audiences.

Mike Smith is joined in the Trail1033 studio with Jason Mandala of Garden City Harvest. The annual garden party is freshest party of the summer, happening Thursday August 17th. Mike Smith chats with Deborah Stapley Graham about the 2023 International Choral Festival happening in Missoula July 19-22. Choirs from around the world are hand selected to participate in this event based on their musical excellence and variety. The international choir visitors stay with welcoming hosts across Missoula throughout the Festival, sharing friendship, food, stories, and song. The 2023 festival includes choirs from Catalonia, Taiwan, Cost Rica, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Uganda and more.

Randy Katen, legendary Montana skateboarder and founding member of N-Men and Jeff Ament, bassist of the Pearl Jam stop by the Trail1033 morning show with an update on the new Clinton Skate Park Project, expected to break ground in 2023.
The goal of the project is to create a positive gathering space for local kids. The skate park will bring renewed energy to Missoula County’s Clinton Community Park. Phase 1 of this project focuses on construction of a basic skate park facility. So far $125,000 has been raised through business, private, foundation and public funding. An extra $50,000 of local donations will secure Clinton’s spot on the construction schedule for Fall 2023.

One of the primary objectives for The Missoula Midtown Association is interacting with business, community and government to help guide redevelopment, growth, and positive improvements to Missoula‘s Midtown. Early in the planning process, community members provided input on their future vision for Midtown. The plan is now complete and ready for public viewing.
A FREE event is planned for the public to view the Midtown Master Plan, Sunday June 11th at the Southgate Mall 12pm to 2pm in the Dillard's Parking lot. Food trucks will be on hand as well as Big Dipper ice cream, a bouncy house, family activities and more

Join the Missoula Symphony November 4th & 6th as they honor a legendary composer from our own community—the former distinguished professor of composition at the UM, Donald Johnston. His Symphony No. 4 “Lewis and Clark Symphony” exemplifies the brave spirits of the first explorers and the soundscape of the openness of the West.
The concert begins with a powerful piece Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, written by Joan Tower, who was lauded by The New Yorker as “one of the most successful woman composers of all time.” Rounding out the program are Jean Sibelius’ atmospheric Lemminkäinen Suite—a symphonic poem about the Finnish mythological hero—and John Williams’ Superman March. MTFF film "The Unknown Country" has been hailed by Indiewire as “a stunning spiritual companion to Terrence Malick and ‘Nomadland’”. The film directed by Maltz features Montana native Lily Gladstone, screens Friday, 10/14 7:00 pm (Q& A with Morissa & Lily) and Sunday, 10/16 7:30 pm (Q&A with Lily).
About the Montana Film Festival (MTFF): This year’s lineup features 7 feature-length and 21 short films curated by MTFF. Genres run the gamut from experimental animation to heartwarming comedy, with eight countries represented. As well as parties, a trivia competition, and numerous Q&A sessions.

Mike Smith visits with John Samuel Brown, Festival Director of the Montana Book Festival taking place in Missoula September 15-19. After a 2 year hiatus, this celebration of the written word is once again an in-person event.
This year, the Montana Book Festival has partnered with the Missoula Public Library, along with MCAT and the ZACC, to bring over 50 authors from around the region and around the world to our special literary community. The festival is a mix of free and ticketed events, including dozens of panels and readings, an exhibitor fair, workshops and more.

The 2022 BHA Rendezvous is happening May 12-14 at Historic Fort Missoula. In the final BBD Company concert of the season, Window Dressing, we take a moment to look from the outside in. Inspired by glimpses of home life seen only through windows, this season-closer will be a screen dance film, videoed on-location in a Missoula home. It depicts the story of 6 women weaving through the domestic moments of life after suffering a loss. Filmed by Mike Steinberg and Kelly Bouma, directed/choreographed by Joy French, the film honors women’s ability to lean on one another and heal.

Back to the Mother Microbrewed Kombucha is hosting a regional scavenger hunt/litter pick up initiative. Starting on April 22nd and lasting 3 whole weeks, we will have hidden over 1250 hand made art objects across our city parks and our regional trail heads. GnomeFesters are invited to go and enjoy our public lands in search of these collectable art objects. As they hunt, they are encouraged to pick up litter along the way. This is our way of giving back to our community and to encourage others to pay it forwards. Together we can keep our public lands looking pristine and encourage others to do the same! In the mountains of northern Kenya, a Samburu community is doing something that has never been done before, building a sanctuary for orphaned elephants to rehabilitate them back to the wild. The project is not just changing attitudes about elephants, it's changing attitudes about women too; the secret to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary’s success is the special bond between a group of women keepers and one special elephant named Shaba.

After 80 years, people can now witness the autumn spectacle of these powerful swimmers fighting to reach the streams they hatched in. Missoula Food Bank & Community Center Executive Director Aaron Brock comes by The Trail to talk about Can the Cats Food Drive. It is the kind of rivalry that boosts the community, and after the Cats donated more in 2018, this year's goal is to donate 406,000 pounds of food this year.

Chris, Calvin, Fat Pack & Ghuan are the urban cowboys of South Central, a concept many are unfamiliar with in the congested area of Southern California. Fire on the Hill shows the life and struggles they must walk between the gang-filled streets of LA and life as a cowboy.
