POOLcast: Recent Episodes

The POOL Berlin

The POOL Berlin is an open collective of Berliners active in the minimal and experimental techno scene in Berlin.

The group has its origin in private meetings at Dr.Nojoke´s kitchen, which were started in 2014 as a platform for like-minded Berliner producers, DJs, supporter, VJs, fans and for getting in touch with international artists, who were visiting Berlin - such as David Last, Ingemar Stalholm, Pachyderme, The Automatic Messages, Elysée, Attentat, Dugong, Yes Ma´am, Matt and Mark Thibideau, Dinelka et cetera.. //

THE KITCHEN / quasi private, intimate events in small venues as a lab-space for performances, works in progress, jam-sessions, workshops, for communication, knowledge transfer, for talking, drinking, having fun, getting to know each other, building up a network and for our friends from Berlin and from all over the world, who visit Berlin. /

POOLcast 099 - J-M-SThe second POOLcast of 2024 joins the line-up of fully improvised works from previous months. This time, however, it's not one person alone who has sat down at his modular system and pressed record, but J-M-S have once again recorded one of their jam sessions for you.J-M-S plays live music with all kinds of electronic devices, which are completely improvised without any guidelines. Devices and instruments vary from session to session and allow you to experience the creativity of the artists unfiltered. There are no instructions, no metronome, no scales or other guidelines. Lose yourself in atmospheric spaces, dreamy echoes, woozy reverbs and rushing drones. POOLcast 098 - Lumia SylkoOur first POOLcast in 2024 comes from Switzerland and, like our last edition, is a live modular synth recording. Lumia Sylko is essentially an audiovisual project that uses the technical means and media of today to offer a platform for creative development.Musically, there are almost no limits. Ambient, minimal, jazz, drone, electroacoustic and musique concrète are all components that find their way into Lumia Sylko's works. For POOLcast 098, Lumia Sylko has sat down at his modular system and provided us with a recording that wonderfully demonstrates what can be musically extracted from such systems. From hypnotic to groovy to dreamy, Lumia Sylko has created a thoroughly entertaining recording for POOLcast that we can recommend to everyone for the dark days.Happy New Year.Enjoy.https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-098-lumiasylkohttps://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-098-lumia-sylko https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-098-lumia-sylko/ //Lumia Sylkohttps://www.lumiasylko.art/https://www.instagram.com/lumia_sylko https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnHJLbCeLHJTAqkvMYppBYg //The POOL Berlinhttps://www.thepoolberlin.de/ https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUzhttps://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcasthttps://pca.st/tC92https://bit.ly/2LwuUBEhttps://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 097 - DemiurgeOur last edition of POOLcast for 2023 brings us back a familiar face. Demiurge aka Demas von Klangscheiben, founding member of POOL and co-initiator of the idea of a monthly podcast series under the POOL banner, has sat down at his modular system again after a "life stuff" break and provided us a recording for you.The end of this creative break is more than a return to what was. This is not an attempt to simply make the past tangible again. Rather, something new is being created here from a cognitive narrative. A reinterpretation of past creations is inevitable, but a return to a deterministic archetype of artistic existence is not to be anticipated. There is therefore nothing better than a POOLcast to provide a platform for this new artistic phase in Demiurge's work.Enjoyhttps://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-097-demiurge https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-097-demiurge https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-097-demiurge //Demiurgewww.facebook.com/DemiurgeBerlin www.youtube.com/channel/UCPYSSF6hYoeYdNvHEGHrvQQ //The POOL Berlinhttps://www.thepoolberlin.de/ https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUzhttps://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcasthttps://pca.st/tC92https://bit.ly/2LwuUBEhttps://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 096 - GNILYFWe start our new POOLcast season with a mixtape by Gnilyf, co-founder and POOLcast curator from the very beginning. For the start of our tenth POOLcast season, gnilyf presents a mixtape that ranges between the genres of jazz, experimental, ambient, drone and techno. The mixture of styles has accompanied POOLcast since the first editions and is thus the cornerstone for the development of POOLcast from a pure genre playground to a space for unfiltered creativity. Without limitations and audience-driven expectations in curation, we try to be a platform for the unexpected, inspiring and challenging with our own productions and curated contributions. A platform for works of art that come as directly as possible from the creative level to the listener without external influences and thus evoke a reaction that can be both harmony and dissonance. Between these two ends of the spectrum is the space in which art is created and consumed.Join us for the tenth season.Enjoyhttps://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-096-gnilyfhttps://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-096-gnilyfhttps://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-096-gnilyf/ //GNILYFhttps://www.facebook.com/gnilyfhttps://soundcloud.com/gnilyf//The POOL Berlinhttps://www.thepoolberlin.de/ https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUzhttps://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcasthttps://pca.st/tC92https://bit.ly/2LwuUBEhttps://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 094 - ANNFor our September issue we have another Founderscast, so a POOLcast directly from the heart of The POOL Berlin and the POOLcast department. ANN's ongoing journey through the spheres of electronic music currently finds a new peak in the interplay of Ambient and Drone. The first thought that comes to mind with the terms Ambient and Drone is the idea of a wall of standing vibrations building up in front of you. However, what sounds like sonic brutalism here is actually much more than walls that seem to stretch endlessly in all directions. Rather, ambient and drone are amorphous spheres that exist in countless variations. These spheres of electronic music, with their oscillating and undefined edges, can merge, orbit, overlap, sublimate, or phase out. The resulting complex musical spaces are much more than vibrating walls.Enjoy.https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-094-ann https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-094-annhttps://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-094-ann//ANNhttps://soundcloud.com/ann-otherhttps://annother.bandcamp.com/https://www.facebook.com/ANN.mistakeshttps://www.instagram.com/ann_related/ //The POOL Berlinhttps://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/ https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/ https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/ https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/ https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUz https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000 https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcast https://pca.st/tC92 https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-pool-berlin/poolcast https://bit.ly/2LwuUBE https://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 093 - PLO

Our August issue brings you another live improvised recording from our very own project PLO. For this recording ANN, Dr.Nojoke, Waldboot and The Artist Formerly Known as From Karaoke to Stardom came together with a whole truckload of music hardware.

Samplers, grooveboxes, keyboards, guitar pedals, synthesizers and more create a unique vibe at the PLO sessions right from the set up and sound check. The unpredictable combination of all the instruments, effects and ideas, which are completely recombined from session to session, create a breeding ground of creativity for the artists attending the session. With the goal of allowing as few mental filters as possible to come between artistic intuition and the piece. To create an environment in which the participating artists allow the purest form of art. It is therefore also unnecessary to use typical musical phrases to classify the resulting work. The consumption of such artworks should also be enjoyed with as little bias as possible.

Enjoy

POOLcast 091 - Dr.Nojoke

For our first summer POOLcast in 2023 we have a collector set from our beloved Dr.Nojoke. Classical, dub, techno, ambient, jazz and electronic are carefree mixed together here, creating a marvel over and over again that fits perfectly into the POOLcast concept.

"Life During Wartime" - Part 2, is what Dr.Nojoke calls his collage. Part 1 was a little over a year ago ( https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-077-drnojoke ). Time has not stopped and continues to pass ceaselessly. Plans of that time have occurred, have been forgotten, have changed or have been postponed. If you try to recall this point in time, it will bear more or less fruit. Predictable, you might think, our existence, chained by the absolute determinism of time. The moment, a quantum of time. The moment as the purpose of life, no consideration, no foresight, nothing that makes our actions tangible and useful beyond the "self in the moment". Are causes and effects even comprehensible for us beyond the moment or is the timeless self just an unattainable fantasy? What does time do to us?

Listen and find out. Enjoy.

POOLcast 090 - IMTNinety releases in our POOLcast series is over seven years of monthly releases and for our current milestone ANN and GNILYF aka IMT, our main POOLcast organizers, sat down at their instruments and recorded one of their fully improvised sessions.Such sessions are always an exploration of two constantly, independently, changing musical spheres. Spheres that constantly orbit each other, collide, repel and drift apart again until the musical entity of the two spheres has re-enriched itself with musical mass and energy that there is once again an attraction of the two worlds. These collisions lead to oscillations which can excite each other or lead to extinction. Parts of the two spheres are absorbed and recombined by the other. This transfer of musical mass and energy creates IMT.Enjoy.https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-090-imthttps://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-090-imthttps://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-090-imt///IMThttps://threeapes.de/ //The POOL Berlinhttps://www.thepoolberlin.de/ https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUzhttps://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcasthttps://pca.st/tC92https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-pool-berlin/poolcasthttps://bit.ly/2LwuUBEhttps://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 088 - GNILYF x WaldbootFor our March issue this year we have a kind of creative face-off. The two alter egos of our POOLcast host Sebastian lets the different musical worlds of his creation compete against each other. The two sides of his musical being draw their creativity from self-created sounds, with all kinds of synthesizers and effects, programmed and arranged by himself. However, two hearts beat in his creation, which significantly influence the creation in each creation against each other and with each other. The love for rhythmic sequences and groovy bassline competes against the desire for acoustic and emotional synthesizer. Experimental soundscapes that want to nestle with classic dub and minimal lines. The meshing of these two hearts is a perpetual conflict that yearns for reconciliation. This POOLcast is a renewed attempt at convergence.Enjoy.https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-088-gnilyf-x-waldboot/ https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-088-gnilyf-x-waldboot https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-088-gnilyf-x-waldboot/ //GNILYF / Waldboothttps://soundcloud.com/gnilyf https://soundcloud.com/waldboot https://www.facebook.com/gnilyf https://www.facebook.com/waldboot //The POOL Berlinhttps://www.thepoolberlin.de/ https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUzhttps://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcasthttps://pca.st/tC92https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-pool-berlin/poolcasthttps://bit.ly/2LwuUBEhttps://amzn.to/2K3elN4

POOLcast 086 - .subdWe kick off the year with a POOLcast edition of .subd from Brazil. POOLcast 086 is a refreshingly energetic piece of work, the perfect start to a new year with our POOLcast series.Every year around new year, some reflect on the past one, and others wonder what the new one has in store for them. Sometimes we look back on the past and let our thoughts wander into the future. But it is quite usual for these two behaviors to be very much separated from each other in a person's life. To make the same decisions for the future on the basis of experiences is often not possible. Times, people and oneself are subject to constant change, so it seems deceptive that future decisions can be made purely on the basis of the past. But here art can serve as an anchor between the past and the future, letting us experience nostalgia and an atmosphere of departure simultaneously. Art can unite past, future, chaos, order, nature and technology, helping us to have truly timeless experiences.Happy New Year.Enjoy.https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-086-subdhttps://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-086-subdhttps://www.mixcloud.com/upload/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-086-subd/ //.subdFrom the outskirts of Osasco/São Paulo west zone, he is the only one in his region to produce this style. POOLcast 084 - GNILYF

For the conclusion of our seventh season, here's one of GNILYF's Melange Mixtapes. Whether it's ambient, jazz, techno, electronic, musique contrete, classic or virtuosic instrumental music, anything can end up in these multitrack mixtapes. The goal is a journey through many emotional states, creating new perspectives with every playthrough and ever changing mindsets.

Sometimes after sixty minutes, the same feeling can arise as if you were looking back on an entire year. Isn't it strange how experiencing moments and remembering them can not seldom lead to completely contrary feelings. Even knowing this fact does not change its outcome. Experience changes us in such a way that we do not look at past things with the same ego as we look at future things. Repeated experience also changes our view of things again. The constant changes of our self are unstoppable and thus, with the necessary awareness and open-mindedness, enable us to experience ever new adventures, even in the most trivial moments.

On to the ninth season of POOLcast. Enjoy.

We are happy to present something very new and unique for our october issue. rand, the duo for urban sensitive music for piano and electronics by Dr.Nojoke and Jan Gerdes, have provided us with an exclusive recording of an improvisation. rand have just released their first album "Peripherie", which they distribute themselves. A project that took over two years of work and is now available as download, CD and limited vinyl edition. This time they demonstrate that they are not only able to record excellent music in the studio, furthermore they are also presenting their vision of the fusion of piano and electronics in an improvised way.

rand merges the pure, acoustic nature of the piano with the twisted world of electronics, often breaking with expectations of normal listening habits. Unpredictably, the two seemingly so different musical and falsely pre-determined spheres can abruptly switch positions. Piano and electronics coexist on an equal level in all areas of the musical process. Rhythm, tonality and dynamics are not reserved for one of the two realms. The apparent boundaries between electronics and piano blur for moments now and then, only to appear tangible again a few moments later. This creates a constant tension that surrounds the recording from beginning to end. So it's worth taking the time to listen actively several times, preferably in different environments and states of mind, alone or together, to feel firsthand what the apparent tension between piano and electronics can trigger.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 082 - ANN

Our September edition of the POOLcast this year comes from one of our co-founders, ANN. He rolled out his music carpet and provided us with a digitized tape recording for you.

"THE LOST RECORDINGS ARE LEADING US TO ALL THE ANSWERS WE'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR IN THE BEGINNING" - ANN

Searching and finding is an integral part of life and especially the creative life. Sometimes you search without knowing what and sometimes you find without having searched. Nevertheless, both are neither the beginning nor the end of a definable or easily navigable path. Finding and searching are like gates in the maze of being and thinking. If we push open the gates in search of something specific, we can find something unexpected and immediately when we find what we are looking for, curiosity arises as to what is hidden behind the next gate.

Be seekers and you will find. Enjoy.

POOLcast 080 - PLO

Our 80th POOLcast issue comes directly from the original POOL forge. PLO the heart of the matter, the driving force behind POOL and everything that surrounds POOL, so it is a logical causality to celebrate our current anniversary edition with PLO.

POOLcast 080 is a recording. which was created between the holidays in December 2021 as part of the rC3 - remote Chaos Experience - of the Chaos Computer Club. The virtual event had a diverse program of talks, panels and shows. PLO was invited to play the "Abchillgleis". As usual the result was a completely improvised recording with the help of electric piano, modular system, grooveboxes and synthesizers. Fluctuations between experimental, minimal, jazz, ambient, soundscapes, noise and electronica create two hours of escapism, which could hardly be better suited to switch into the well-deserved weekend mode.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 079 - Waldboot

Our latest edition of the POOLcast comes this month from Waldboot. A fictional, artificial construct from the world of Three Apes.

POOLcast 079 is a weave of the musical aspects of this construct. Synthetic, acoustic and emotional sounds, which have their origin in the coincidence of the moment, document a timeless journey through sheer endless worlds. Waldboot's musical form manifests itself in almost exclusively self-synthesized sounds, using various generative algorithms to create a fabric of organic textures and artificial atmospheres. This seemingly tangled web serves as a breeding ground for all sorts of emotional moments and unpredictable ramifications. A kind of a musical maze, which knows neither entrance nor exit. You get the feeling as if you were, are and will irrevocably always have been a part of this mesh.

Coincidence with meaning generates emotions. Enjoy.

POOLcast 078 - Collab Special - Infinite Monkey Theorem + The Artist Formerly known as From Karaoke to Stardom

Issue 078 of our POOLcast series brings you another collaboration special. This time we have an excerpt of the session of the Infinite Monkey Theorem Duo, consisting of Marcus Block and Sebastian Mehl, and The Artist Formerly Known as From Karaoke to Stardom. The session is completely improvised and played and recorded live with all kinds of electronic devices and software.

Such sessions have become an integral part of the POOL universe and vary greatly in their outcome depending on the field of participants. The combination of the fragile ambient and drone, which IMT have written themselves on the flag and the melodic and effect-rich playfulness of From Karaoke to Stardom creates a lively, filigree in-between world. A kind of musical bubble that seems to be coated by a thin membrane. At first you seem to recognize something inside or perceive reflections on the surface. But piece by piece, elements diffuse in and out quite inconspicuously, until over time a homogeneous, isotropic whole emerges, which no longer reveals any real boundaries. After a while, you ask yourself, are you looking at a world from the outside or are you part of it? Like the cosmological principle, a new world is created through the mixing of two realities, which could most simply be described as romantic surrealism. Unreal and yet familiar, luminously bright, but with perceivable shades. Somehow shadowy and twisted, yet detailed and inviting in an unexplainable way.

Where else can you hear romantic surrealism? Enjoy.

POOLcast 077 - Dr.Nojoke

For our first POOLcast spring edition of the year we have a collector set from our POOL founder Frank Bogdanowitz aka Dr.Nojoke for you. The foundation of this set consisting of Dub-Techno, Ambient, Jazz and Experimental creates a mixture of reflection and hope, which almost magically pulls the listener out of the moment.

A welcome break, as the moment is only a small fraction of our existence. Yet only the moment seems to make our existence truly tangible. Constantly we make plans and explore our memories, reflect on decisions and rehearse the future, assemble ourselves from the past and shape ourselves for the future. However, it is the moment that seems to determine everything and can distort everything we have experienced and planned beyond any recognition. This results in a dichotomy between the Acting Self and the Thinking Self that raises the question, what defines us more, what we think or what we do? Is our existence more than the sum of our actions? Isn't there also a Timeless Self that emerges from past and future moments and thus creates the momentary or is the moment the actual 'being' ?

Create your own timeless self. Enjoy.

POOLcast 075 - Collab Special - Storlon + Dollar Mambo

Our second POOLcast of the year is a collaboration between Storlon and Dollar Mambo from Switzerland. In their POOLcast the worlds of a modular enthusiast and a piano player are colliding. Both use all kinds of electric and acoustic sound generators to create a musical hybrid.

Acoustic-analog and synthetic-digital with influences from jazz, classical, drone, ambient, minimal, experimental and musique concrete form a heterogeneous body of art, which surprises over and over again with soulful details, mysterious sounds and rhythms. Dynamic, melodic and hypnotic. All stops of sound blending are pulled out, creating a maelstrom that is hard to escape from.

POOLcast 074 - Demiurge

Our first POOLcast of the year comes from Thomas Bäz alter ego Demiurge. Demiurge is a persona that materializes out of the tensions and flows of a modular system and takes us on his musical expeditions every now and then.

To play such a modular system live is already an art in itself, to patch it live and let it expand acoustically in all directions without a fixed obvious origin requires a feeling that cannot do without an inner source. This driving force is what Thomas calls 'Demiurge'. Fittingly, in modular music you are craftsman, creator and artist all in one. You create the tools and assemble them into your own creation, which becomes more than the sum of its parts. This emergence is the fountain of art. If you extend this essence by another dimension, like time, a complexity arises, which is hard to grasp. Therefore, it is always a pleasure for us to be able to present temporal cross-sections of Demiurge's manifestation. Since the fascination of such recordings lies in their momentary revelation, it only remains for us to say...

Enjoy.

POOLcast 072 - GNILYF

Our seventh season, like the last one, is opened by GNILYF. As every year, his mixtape is a dialogue with himself, his imagination and its manifestations in the form of creativity. What connects idea, work, artist and audience, and how can fantasy be made most immediately tangible ?

In order to get to the core of the question, it is advisable not only to judge the work of an artist by her/his work, but also to place her/him and her/his work in the given context. At the beginning of her/his work, the artist herself/himself is often surprised by what she/he creates. Everything is new and unexplored, the possibilities of imagination and creativity seem endless. But soon she/he has to realize soberingly that fantasy and creativity are not one and the same. Between imagination and creativity lie many layers and filters which have a great effect on the creation. Sociality, adolescence, experiences and time have a strong influence on how unfiltered fantasy becomes creativity. By the way, this is also true for the viewer of the work and that is exactly why artists and consumers can learn a lot from each other. This is not about bringing each other into harmony or necessarily pleasing the other. Rather, it is about challenging each other and generating and sharing a new experience. Art should not just please, art should surprise.

Enjoy. . https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-072-gnilyf https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-072-gnilyf https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-072-gnilyf/

POOLcast 071 - SUFER

We close our 6th season with SUFER, originally from Colombia and now living in Montreal. Besides his DJ and graphic design career, SUFER deals with the ethereal, dystopian and artificial nature of sound. POOLcast is the perfect playground for that.

We here at POOLcast have been obsessed from the beginning with the idea that every artist explores new areas of creative development in the course of their career and we want to provide a platform for these experiments or explorations. Therefore, we are always delighted when submissions reach us that take advantage of just that. SUFER explores the connection between nature and the human spirit in his POOLcast. Nature-like sounds paired with shamanic, tribal-like chants make for an almost ritualistic listening experience and create seemingly ancient embedded images in the mind's eye that can make the primordial origins of nature and humanity tangible. The perfect mixture for the current time between the seasons.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 070 - IMT

Our September issue for this year is from IMT - Infinite Monkey Theorem. The live improvisation duo consisting of Marcus Block aka ANN and Sebastian Mehl aka GNILYF / Waldboot.

They create images, moods and feelings that take you completely out of the world in just a few minutes. Acoustically induced escapism. From simple tone sequences and short musical communication between the two can abruptly dreamlike romantic to completely surreal worlds, in the head of the listener, arise. Rotating, acoustic universes that seem to come into being as if by chance, only to collapse as if predetermined in order to create space for the next inflation of the work. Expansion and collapse are an integral part of the project here, the apparent coincidence seems to be at once the predetermined fate of the piece. Nothing comes into being in order to remain, so the opportunity should be seized.

POOLcast 069 - PLO

This month we present you again one of our favorite projects - PLO. ANN, Demas, Dr.Nojoke and GNILYf got together again in the POOL Studio for an improvised computer groovebox modular sampler jazz session thingy.

The constantly changing composition of musicians, instruments and technology makes each session a musical event in its own way. The individual participating musicians do not know what instruments and what technology the others will bring to the actual session, which leads to an unpredictable musical experience that often exists only in that moment. Therefore, it is always a pleasure for us when the participants share their experience with our POOLcast listeners. As always, it's hard to describe in just a few words what the recording holds for the listener. Therefore, we decided not to give you a preview of what you can expect when listening to the POOLcast. This way it comes closest to the actual experience of the musicians. Musical communication in real time, improvised and unfiltered.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 068 - Salvador Hören

Our next summer edition of the year comes once again from Colombia, to be exact from Medellin. Suitable for balmy summer nights, 'Salvador Hören' has provided us with a live set that unfolds and deforms as hypnotically as clouds announcing a thunderstorm.

Listening creates the sensation of looking up at a sky peppered with clouds that stretch nuanced across the horizon. Also when listening, the phenomenon arises as when looking at clouds, the smallest change lets the imagination do its work and new images arise. If you let your thoughts wander for just a moment, levels shift and new images emerge. Exactly this phenomenon occurs when Salvador steers his combination of ambient, dub techno, minimal grooves and experimental with sublime coziness towards the furious finale.

POOLcast 067 - 0l0m

Our June edition for the year 2021 comes from Ilya aka 0l0m from Moscow. He has set up some CDJ and provided us with a wonderfully diverse mixtape, varied and stirring, just the right thing for the starting summer.

We are very happy that we see more and more new DJs who try to unite diverse music to a complete work and thus create something uniquely new. The aim is not to serve genres or to make only one mood consumable over sixty minutes. Rather, they try to bring the multifaceted richness that music offers into resonance with the complexity of the human emotional and mental world, or to use it as a communication channel. Such works can be viewed from a different angle every day. The current state of the listener contributes significantly to the experience of multiple genre mixtapes, creating a feedback loop. The work has an active influence on the listener's current condition and the listener's condition on the active influence of listening.

Repeated listening is required.

POOLcast 066 - Massud Matin

For our sixty-sixth edition of POOLcast we have a submission from Massud Matin for you. Matin has sent us a mix with which he leaves his comfort zone and ventures into new realms of electronic music for the first time.

As we have discussed many times before, POOLcast is a platform to expand the prevailing comfort zones. This is true for all three parties involved, the artists who are given a stage without any genre classifications and are free to experiment or share another facet of their work with others. Furthermore, it is also always an incentive for our listeners to engage with each episode of our podcast series in a new way, loosening up perhaps entrenched listening habits a bit. The third and perhaps most trivial comfort zone to break open again and again is our own, that of the curators of POOLcast. This is where visions of what POOLcast is and should be fed from many different minds. This results in a zone that seems to be pinned down by compromises. Recognizing and admitting this is an important part of everyone's creative life. That's why we are glad to receive submissions that encourage us to leave our one comfort zone. What we want from others, we should always look for in ourselves.

Therefore, we are happy to present you this month with Massud Matin, a POOLcast that fits wonderfully into the current season, is refreshingly lightheartedly curated and brings a flow of optimism that we all surely appreciate.

Enjoy.

Massud Matin Massud Matin is a minimal producer and performer based in the city of Bremen, Germany. His first release came out in 2014 and he made waves with his vinyl only EPs at prominent labels such as Tupiar Records (Romania, 2017), LumièresLaNuit (France, 2018) and Norse Project (UK, 2019). Bold, forward organic rhythms as well as experimental sampling and warm frequencies are part of his signature sounds. For the Year 2021 Massud got together with label chief and artist known as Muninn aka Sugheh Apul to create the Damavand Project which will feature vinyl EPs and digital singles dedicated to the Dub and Roots culture in combination with minimal music production and art form. Damavand is a loving and playful translation of a musical approach dedicated to the pioneer Ruddock Osbourne better known as King Tubby and brings this legacy in music history to another conclusion. The first limited vinyl only release of the Damavand Series will feature 4 original tracks by Massud Matin and is set to hit stores in a few months.

POOLcast 065 - Collab Special - Demas + The Artist Formerly Known As From Karaoke To Stardom

For our 65th issue we have another collaboration. Demas and The Artist Formerly Known As From Karaoke To Stardom have once again put their modular synthesizers together and provided us with their recording for you.

It's always amazing what the combination of two artists and their instruments can produce in terms of creative expression. Thomas and Jeremy have already shared their modular sessions with us several times. But although artist and instrument are identical each time, each recording is unique. A kind of multidimensional interaction takes place here. The senses communicate with the artist, the artist with the body and the body with the instrument, but that's not all. The fact multiplies here, the instruments and senses of the artists also interact with each other, just like the artists themselves. Interactions that take place on several levels. Electronic, chemical-physical and interpersonal influences turn the individual parts into something uncontrollable. This is reason enough for us to give this form of creative work a stage again and again with great enthusiasm.

POOLcast 065 finds itself somewhere between IDM, Techno, Experimental and Ambient. It is not possible to say exactly with this edition. Thomas and Jeremy have created a multidimensional construct from the interplay between two artists and their instruments that leaves out almost no twists and turns. From almost complete stasis to all-out chaos, everything can be experienced here.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 064 - ANN

The March edition of our POOLcast series is provided by ANN. One of the founders and integral part of The POOL Berlin, as well as curator of POOLcast. ANN has been exploring the different layers of electronic music for about 20 years now. A period of time in which you constantly search, find and comprehend yourself anew between different genres, styles, media and times.

POOLcast 064 could be titled "Between". Not only did his connection with electronic music originate between two formative decades in Berlin. ANN also witnessed many electronic music styles, media and developments that shaped the zeitgeist of the time. Never simply doing what was in the manual or what the past demanded, he always tried to look between the shell and the core. In the space between experiencing music and making music, an area is created which makes room for something new. ANN creates and experiences his music simultaneously. This is not limited to the temporal moment, but also to the use of media and instruments used for listening and making music. When the boundaries between generating and reproducing sounds become blurred, a cycle between experiencing music and generating music is formed. The space between action and reaction leads to the fact that it is not clear where the beginning and end of this creative cycle. It is often impossible to tell whether ANN is listening to music or making music. A disadvantage for outsiders, because if they are not there live, they do not often get to enjoy his work.

Therefore, we are of course even more pleased that ANN again provides us with one of his works. This time a mixtape that was created from his constantly growing vinyl collection. Somewhere between Jazz, Ambient and Musique Concrete.

POOLcast 063 - Syntax Erika

Our second POOLcast of the year comes from Syntax Erika, who lives between Mexico and Barcelona. For over 7 years she has been studying and working on projects in the contemporary electronic music and media landscape.

Syntax Erika belongs to the latest generation of artists who do not limit their creative work to the boundaries of one medium. Those who understand art as a hybridization of all senses and demands just that from the audience. Programming is done here, moving images are generated, synthesizers are recorded and music is played as well as created live. Everything that is technically allowed and possible nowadays is explored, studied, exploited and presented for creative expression. Musically that means Dark Ambient, industrial drones, Art-Techno, noise and synthesizer experiments. For her POOLcast she has arranged an interesting mixture of contemporary experimental music to an always emotional mixtape. Natural sounds are mixed with synthetic noises, ambient is permeated by ethereal vocals and Musique Concrete experiments come in all colors and temperatures.

POOLcast 063, for those who didn't have Erika on their list yet, gives a very good picture of her musical world, which you can discover either on her own label Ambient Flux or with the released Syntax Network EP on the Japanese female label GARDIANNN.

POOLcast 062 - Demiurge

For our first POOLcast in 2021 we have another highlight from our own POOL Roster for you. POOLcast 062 by Demiurge is a modular exploration that goes from ambient to drone to techno. Demiurge is a project by Thomas Bäz, dedicated to the worlds of controllable voltages and modular sound design. Worlds that are often hard to put into words or images, but only become tangible through experience.

The magic that modular sound generation and processing has on the operator is often difficult to convey to the listener or viewer. It is very easy to fall back on simple theories, figurative ramblings about electrical engineering and textbook psychomotoric phrases in order to make something tangible that draws its fascination from the unpredictability of life and nature. Therefore, it is always a challenge to make this well consumable and intuitive for the listener and still maintain the allure of the uncontrollable in the end. Demiurge is fully committed to this mission and has provided us with his latest achievement as POOLcast.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 061 - PLO

For our last POOLcast episode in 2020 we have another very special piece for you. We have spared no expense and effort to present you an improvised and live session of PLO.

Our new POOL studio allowed us to have a meeting of four PLO musicians in late summer under strict hygienic measures and since it is difficult especially for PLO to appear in the given times, we are even more pleased to end the year with one of their lively and unpredictable recordings. This time Demas, ANN, Walboot aka gnilyf and The Artist Formerly Known As From Karaoke To Stardom got together with their electronic keyboards, modular synthesizers and laptops. The result is a mix of jazz, dub, ambient, drone and musique concrete. Just the right thing to give your mind some headspace before the holidays.

We wish everyone the best, health and strength, and a happy, hopeful new year to all.

See you next year. The POOL Berlin

POOLcast 060 - gnilyf

This monthly issue of POOLcast marks our 5th anniversary. Five years ago we started to present you music from us, our musician friends and musical discoveries every month. With this episode we end our 5th season and half a decade of POOLcast.

For this occasion gnilyf has provided us again with one of his self-made mixtapes, which, fitting to the expiring decade, seems to serve as a stirring and stirring metaphor for the year or decade that is running out. Wavering rhythms are carried through shimmering layers, disharmonic drones are stacked on top of each other until they create an echo of confidence. Jazzy and electronic phrases vie for your attention as they seem to be played from the stage by bold experimental soundscapes. An everlasting struggle between truth and clarity. The last decade and especially the last months have shown us that truth does not mean clarity and that you can get into a fly glass faster than you thought possible. True clarity is hidden behind a veil of unpredictability that is formed by multiple futures. Moments of clarity grant us only a brief glimpse of one of these possible future events, only to be veiled again a few moments later, and we blindly try to take the right path.

So stay tuned and be with us for the next 5 years. Enjoy.

POOLcast 059 - Collab Special - rand ( Jan Gerdes & Dr.Nojoke )

For October we have another Collaboration Special for you. This time we present 'rand', the project of the duo Jan Gerdes and Frank Bogdanowitz aka Dr.Nojoke. During the lockdown Jan and Bogdan met for improvisational sessions, Jan on piano, electronics and effects and Dr.Nojoke on electronics and effects. Together they are exploring new ways to fuse and transform their unique visions through a remarkable interplay.

rand is a crossover project at the interface of classical and electronic music with references to minimal, romantic and contemporary music as well as to jazz, ambient, drone, glitch, clicks & cuts and club music. Jan Gerdes, who as a pianist has mastered both the classical-romantic and contemporary repertoire, has collaborated with some of the leading composers of our time, such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and Wolfgang Rihm, and teaches at the University of Potsdam as well as at the Hanns Eisler Music Colleges in Berlin and Mannheim. Frank Bogdanowitz alias Dr.Nojoke has been performing successfully for many years at selected electronic music festivals such as Club Transmediale (Berlin), Boom Festival (Portugal), Piknic Electronik (Montreal), ARMA 17 (Moscow) and has made a name for himself with his own experimental style, which he also represents on his own label Cllkno. What both artists have in common is a fascination for the frontiers of contemporary piano music and experimental club electronics and the acoustic and performative interweaving of individualized, poetic and lyrical piano sound with the overwhelming, orchestral and bizarre soundscapes of electronic music.

In this field of tension between analog and digital sounds, lonely piano lines meet threatening dronic sound walls, repetitive piano patterns exist next to crystalline electronic impulses and create fantastic atmospheres and sound scenarios as well as spaces of manifold beauty, poetry and silence.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 058 - Collab Special - Infinite Monkey Theorem

For our September issue we have another Collaboration Special. Infinite Monkey Theorem is the collaboration of the two POOLcast curators and POOL founding members Marcus Block and Sebastian Mehl, aka ANN and Waldboot aka gnilyf.

Both have been musically connected for more than 10 years, but just at the beginning of 2019 they decided to make music together as Infinite Monkey Theorem and shortly after that they released one of their recordings as POOLcast. Since ever they share their thoughts and ideas, even if these have a different origin, it serves as a foundation for their creative work. The exchange acts as a kind of spiritual liberation and creates a unity of experience, knowledge and curiosity. Differently ripened inspiration, continuous impulses and musical conversations create a creative sphere that allows them to merge the vehemently filigree, inexplicably familiar and truly foreign in audible forms. Like thoughts that arise and immediately vanish again. Ideas that become memories. Searching and finding as a singularity. IMT.

POOLcast 057 - Demas

The POOLcast in August comes from Demas, founder of Klangscheiben and POOL co-founder. Known for his error funk techno and dub love, he has turned the record boxes upside down for POOLcast and made us a set that fits into the POOLcast series without any effort and gives clear hints about his musical background.

This raises the following question: Is there such a thing as a fixed, predetermined musical origin or in other words, a definite musical taste at all? There has been research on the origin of musical taste since music has been reproduced. First of all, your parents or your circle of friends are often the first people to be referred to, as they will cement the cornerstones of your taste in music in your education or adolescence. This also coincides wonderfully with the realization that musical taste and personality interfere. Without question, no doubt, extroverted listening to pop and introverted to jazz. Which is confirmed by the next study, namely the one that exposes the jazz lovers among you as emotionally cold rationalists who prefer to analyze music rather than melt away with heartbreaking soft rock ballads. Well, for every moment there is the right music, taste or not. Besides, you get older, more experienced, more open and tolerant. Wrong. Because another study shows that at 30 years old the case is closed. We always listen to the same thing, because job and family don't give us time for discovering. So question answered, the musical origin or personal musical taste is clearly definable and inevitable. Maybe we should make a study of our POOLcast series to verify the results. Could go wrong, first indication "POOLcast 057 - Demas".

Do you feel challenged now ? :) Stay safe and healthy.

POOLcast 056 - Franco Bellavita

For the start into the second half of the year we invited Franco Bellavita to record a POOLcast for you. Franco has dedicated himself to the world of creativity for years and moves between visual and sonorous media.

Looking at Franco's work, be it his early musical works under the moniker Pachyderme on 31337 records or sleep is commercial, or the works he created with his analog camera, you will notice his commitment to pure, free and unbiased art. This is underlined even more by his further career. Ambient, jazz, drone, analog photography and handmade collages speak for his dedication to art, which, when you look at it, raises the question of what came first, the work or the inspiration? Does devotion create art or is devotion a product of art ? This mental dilemma regarding causality is also reflected in Franco's POOLcast. The construct of ambient, drone and jazz creates a musical palindrome, where the listener has to face the question of causality. What is beginning, what is end, what is the notion, what is the work. Everything interlocks organically and meaningfully, so that it seems difficult to determine whether the idea has become a work of art or whether the work creates an idea.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 055 - Fønø

With this episode of our POOLcast series we present you another facet of our longtime companion Fønø. As a platform dedicated to artistic freedom, we believe that it is important to support and accompany artists in their artistic development.

With this certainty Fønø has sent us one of his latest works. A piece with his own live compositions, collaborations and songs by other artists. The result is a fabric of dark textures, beautiful mystical atmospheres, classical acoustics and almost physical presence. This fabric, which seems to envelop you like a veil of vibrations. A fabric that allows you to descend into an ancient abyss. An abyss that seems to become bigger and more challenging with each further exploration. A dive in which the constantly driving feeling of certainty that surrounds us in everyday life is more and more replaced by the hunger for venture, the primal longing for the unfathomable. A desire that is often covered with material or ideological things in our modern society. Only rarely are there times when human beings and society leave certainty behind and courageously descend into an abyss to fathom it.

A deep journey into a beautiful abyss.

POOLcast 054 - Viktor Udvari

For our POOLcast in May we have a contribution from Viktor Udvari for you. Viktor comes from Hungary and has been making music since 2012, like many at that time, in his bedroom, inspired by live music, avant-garde jazz, tribal, minimalistic and organic vibes of various Berlin, Russian, Japanese and North and South American artists.

A spectrum that testifies to his impartiality and urge for discovery. Qualities that are able to keep the artistic spirit alive. That part of the consciousness that always demands more and the new, the unexplored. A desire that can only be satisfied by discarding fear and consciously confronting the unknown. It requires a permanent dialogue between the different phenomena of ourselves. The inner dialogue that takes place unconsciously and demands attention. Only by actively conducting this dialogue is it possible to open your mind and discard your fear of the new, the unknown, the alien, the uncontrollable. But this is often easier said than done. Frequently we stand in our own way, cloud our perception or lack the right perspective. Art enables us to carry this continuous discourse forward, to see it as an outsider, to share it, to enrich it with new insights and to continue it with new horizons. In the case of Viktor without words, without images, only through music. Music as conversation, for the opening of the inside, for the dialogue with the outside.

Become part of this conversation, listen to yourself.

POOLcast 053 - Cadih

For this issue of POOLcast we invited Cadih, who provides us with a set of her musical discoveries that could hardly be more appropriate for the time between winter and spring.

The time when winter is behind us and spring is just around the corner. A time that leads us into a kind of in-between world. A world between the end and the beginning, a world that makes us reflect on the past months and at the same time gives us a tentative glimpse of the future. Be it plans that we make, or memories that we rearrange. To look at and classify past or future events is a perpetual process that does not follow any particular rules or structures. It is more like an amorphous maze in which one never knows whether unknown paths will lead to new destinations or explored routes will reveal the unexpected. Inside, entrance and exit are only mental constructs that manifest themselves as memories and expectations, which can take on a different form after every junction or twist. A phenomenon that can often be observed when listening to the POOLcast of Cadih. Each chosen piece leads to an unconscious prediction of future musical expectations. Expectations that, a few minutes later, awaken completely new expectations about the course of the entire work, and in doing so make you think of the past pieces in a different way than just a few moments before. A work like an amorphous labyrinth, which is capable of creating new moments with each run.

A musical maze.

POOLcast 052 - Yu Kawabata

Our third edition this year gives us once again the opportunity to introduce you to our extended circle of friends. Yu Kawabata is a DJ with Japanese roots, she started her career in the clubs of Osaka, and then, as her career progressed, she played all the famous locations and events in Russia with her driving techno sets.

POOLcast listeners know that our podcast series also aims to be a platform for artists to present themselves outside their usual or publicly perceived areas. With her set for this POOLcast edition Yu Kawabata takes advantage of this opportunity as well. The mixture of ambient, IDM, drone and jazz creates a mood of departure, awakens the desire to discover and continually transports the listener to new worlds. Worlds that seem to be connected by something. Something that seems neither tangible nor explainable. Yet there is always the feeling that the sequence of worlds you are thrown into serves a purpose, from beginning to end. The purpose of encrypting a secret through each station, of sending a message to the listener and of creating a mood that the solving of a mystery always seems to be imminent.

Stay curious.

POOLcast 051 - Video Special - From Berlin with Love - Alicia Hush, Flori b2b Ana+one

More than 5 years ago we organized one of our first big events together with "Mischwerktanzen" and "Licht Aus!" under the name "The POOL Berlin". "From Berlin with Love" was the result of the effort to finally present our vision to the public. Back then POOLcast was just an idea for the far future and now we look back on 51 episodes. Made possible by artists from all parts of the world, using a wide variety of genres to entertain our audience, which is also at home all over the planet. Once again, we can only thank the artists who inspire and drive us with their creativity, as well as the listeners who share their enthusiasm with us.

The artists who participated at that event were Alicia Hush, Marlene Magnoli, Demas, ANN, Dr.Nojoke, Ana+one, Florist and akustooptik. This episode shows a 5 hour cut of the live stream and the recording of the performances of Alicia Hush and Flori b2b Ana+one.

POOLcast 049 - GNILYF

The year is coming to an end and the first big milestone is just around the corner, a good time to give you a little insight and outlook on POOLcast and POOLtracks.

In the last four years, in which we have brought the two POOL projects step by step to the public, we have got to know artists from all five inhabited continents, accompanied them and offered a platform for their works. This also applies to our audience. In more than 50 countries around the globe, various platforms are used to listen - and share - the artists' POOLcasts and POOLtracks. This makes us proud and motivates us. But that doesn't stop us from finding more platforms and ways next year to give the artists the attention they deserve. Our journey with The POOL Berlin has just begun, the whole team has many ideas and a clear vision for next year and the years to come.

But first things first let's finish 2019 with a last POOLcast and leave past and future out. GNILYF provided us again with one of his rare mixtape collages.

Have fun and a good start into the new year.

POOLcast 048 - Dr.Nojoke versus Anomali Live at Waha Festival 2019

It's November, which means it's been four years since we started releasing new mixtapes, live-sets, dj-sets, collages and everything in between every month. With this POOLcast edition we're finishing our current season and, like every year, we're getting a fresh look. Musically we stay in familiar spheres. For this year's anniversary we have again something very special from our own party for you. A live set from someone who started everything with us and who was already a fixed part of our fellowship before The POOL Berlin, PLO and POOLcast, of course we're talking about Frank Bogdanowitz, Dr.Nojoke alias Anomali.

Dr.Nojoke has been a musician for decades and experienced several musical, historical and personal revolutions. One of the last ones took place with Frank himself, after he had made his producer and live act Alter Ego Dr.Nojoke famous in Berlin and beyond, it was time to tear down old borders and explore new territories. It's not an easy step to take a new path, to leave behind something that has been with you for years, that has become part of yourself, and to go into the unknown. What at the first moment can have the unpleasant taste of a farewell to old values is in reality the acceptance of your own freedom and this is exactly what we are using in this issue of POOLcast. Our concept of following artists through the years of their work tears down a new barrier with this episode. Dr.Nojoke versus Anomali is the union of two worlds that have shaped Frank's life since the last historical revolution.

The Live-set was played in the morning on Sunday, July 14th, 2019, on the Chill in Space stage, Waha Festival, Romania. A blend of field recordings, productions and loops from my projects anomali, rand and dr.nojoke performed live with my typical instrumentarium, my voice and dub-effects. ( Singing bowl, marbles, jew's harp, metal plate, sticks, children's accordion, kazoo, radio, stylophone, monotron and more percussive stuff. )

Behind barriers, opportunities emerge.

POOLcast 047 - Tomash GHz

The first autumn POOLcast of the year comes from our good friend Tomash GHz, who has been with us for several years. As a technician, DJ and modular enthusiast he has no choice but to run into us or maybe it was the other way around. Nevertheless, the question arises why he is only now appearing on POOLcast.

For his pieces Tomash used field recordings, contact microphones, electromagnetic pickups, guitar pedals, bows, found objects and modular synthesizers. Most of this collection of experimental ambient drone music was recorded late at night in a state of self-hypnosis. This period of time in which the mind loses its routines, the comprehensible is replaced by uncontrolled fantasy, and we realize that there exists a realm that offers seemingly limitless possibilities if we only engage in it. Tomash's POOLcast is, so to speak, a travelogue of his tours of the last five years through this sphere. Probably one of the reasons why we can only enjoy Tomash's contribution now.

Inspiration is everywhere.

POOLcast 046 – Sven Laux

After having presented mostly new faces in the last issues, it's time again to use POOLcast as a platform for our local community of musicians. We love to accompany the development of artists and their visions. That's why we've invited Sven Laux again for the September issue of POOLcast. He has undergone a remarkable transformation in his work in recent years. As an artist you are, like every human being, subject to constant change, this concerns your own work, your sense of self, your own personality and your social environment. If we look at the artist's pieces anachronistically and detached from the person itself, we could accuse the artists of indecision, but if we are able to place the works in the right temporal context, completely new perspectives open up for the viewer.

Sven, who was about to set up his own label Seasides on Postcards when he last appeared on POOLcast, now has three wonderful CD releases in his catalogue and the fourth one is about to happen. Sven Laux is continuously working on his vision of the fusion of melodic ambient, emotional drones, fragmented acoustics and modern classical music. The mixtape that Sven made available to us was created a little more than two years ago and shows impressively that apparent indecisiveness often turns out to be exactly the opposite. At that time Sven was still well known from his Minimal Techno releases on relevant labels like 31337, UNOIKI and Sleep is Commercial, but already in this recording his future change seems to manifest itself in a magical way. Melodic fragments, emotional soundscapes, granular textures and a clear vision, which at that time might have been called indecision, but today is quite the contrary.

Art is more than pure work.

POOLcast 045 - Larbjo

August brings us to our 45th episode of POOLcast, where Lars Björk aka Larbjo present his work to you. When we heard his combination of fearless minimalism, open, unpredictable arrangements and dense intimate atmospheres we just had to invite him.

Lars collects sounds using condenser and contact mics as well as radio transmissions and bits & pieces picked up in the continuous digital flow. Sound fragments and field recordings are mashed up and reconfigured with the help of various software applications and hardware devices. The outcome, released under the moniker Larbjo, takes the listener on audiological expeditions into uncharted territories. Territories where the line between noises and music blurs. Where spaces suddenly expand and collapse again, where time rushes by and unexpectedly seems to freeze for a moment.

Challenge your senses and explore his novel domain.

POOLcast 044 - ormr

Our approach with POOLcast is to provide a platform for us, our friends and fellow musician, but we also crawl the web for people which connects with us through their work. The POOLcast of July is another one of these discoveries. This time we invited Gareth Ormerod from London with this solo project ormr.

Gareth was involved with Skam records for a number of years from the late 90s, Dj'ing, some remixing and theatre work. He was then in a creative collaboration zK for a long time. His work experiments with new working methods, a focus on limiting time spent on tracks, quick jams recorded and listened back to some time after and stitched together as themes emerge. All pretty hazy and ambient, themes of noise both natural and electronic and the spaces in between.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 043 - Collab Special - Infinite Monkey Theorem ( ANN + Waldboot )

We end the first half of 2019 with another Collaboration Special. The Infinite Monkey Theorem is a very special one for us as it represents the longest overdue musical collaboration between Marcus Block and Sebastian Mehl, the driving forces behind POOLcast production.

The musical identities of Marcus and Sebastian have now been firmly connected for almost a decade. The foundation for this was laid by the jam sessions in the studio of the trio 'Three Apes', where they discovered their shared enthusiasm for live electronic music with Ray Dansky. After joining forces with Dr.Nojoke and Demas, who shared the same passion, The POOL Berlin, POOLcast and PLO were born. But until the beginning of this year, there was no project of the two that had its own name or that they shared with the public. Infinite Monkey Theorem is the platform they needed to take the next step in their musical development. Long story short, two guys with synths and keys pushing buttons and turning knobs with leads to drone, ambient, jazz and experimental.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 042 - dRealms

For the 42th installment of POOLcast we found another gem in our surrounding music cosm. Flavia alias dRealms has put an exciting musical story together for us.

Her set is dedicated to the oldest and purest of all art forms, telling stories. The art of storytelling is as old as mankind itself. Everyone has the tools for the elemental essence of artistic expression. The crucial step is to choose and master the medium for your stories you want to tell. Noises, gestures, words, language, symbols, sounds, dance, sculptures, paintings, music, poetry, theatre, photography, film and games. Over the history of humanity the medium has changed, expanded and evolved. Music has come a long way as medium for narrations and we are happy that this enables more and more people to become artistically active. Like Flavia, she carefully selected tracks, put them together into a context and created a unique story for us. A Tale of steaming noises and swaying deeps, with memorable lines and timbres.

Unfold yourself.

POOLcast 041 - Meow the Seventh

Spring is around the corner, time for a new face. For our 41th POOLcast we invited Meow the Seventh. She provides us with a selfcrafted live project that perfectly bridges the last cold days.

The time of the year to finally banish scarves and gloves to the depths of the wardrobes, when the trees fill their old veins with life again, the first brave sprouts push their offspring through the soil and the air fills up again with sounds beyond mechanical origins. A feeling arises that everyone describes differently, sometimes it is the feeling of wanting to tackle something new, sometimes it is the thought of having overcome something or simply the inexplicable feeling that comes with looking at green foliage against a blue sky. No matter what images and feelings go through your mind when you think of the upcoming spring, you will find them in Meow's work. A piece characterized by resolute synth lines, promising soundscapes, dynamic grooves and vibrant tonal structures.

Grab your headphones and enjoy.

POOLcast 040 - Video Special - Demiurge & Licht Pfad

Forty, time for a new special series. After our collaboration special series we venture into new territory. For our fortieth edition we have a video special for you. 'Audiovisual Control' is an audio-visual performance by Demiurge and Licht Pfad and was filmed at Greenhouse Berlin in January 2018 as part of the CTM festival prelude.

The project consists of the improvised modular synthesizer sounds of Demiurge and the visuals of Licht Pfad, who is a master in visualization and who has worked with a lot of renowned artists. The result is saturated with the characteristic offbeats by Demiurge, the glitches from the interplay of visuals and control voltage and outworld-ish grooves and synthlines. A total unpredictable performance with uplifting turns and twists.

Time to watch and listen, enjoy.

POOLcast 039 - ANN

This time we dare a reflexive look back at the time before ANN uploaded the first POOLcast and The POOL Berlin was formed. Remember the moment that led you to art. The pictures that amazed you, the stories that inspired you and the music that gave you sleepless nights. Nobody became an artist by accident or pure destiny. Passion and persistence are necessary. But even after years of making art there doesn't seem to be boundaries in the development as an artist. This is the reason why we always like to take a look at the current output of the artists who work with us. ANN started DJing around the turn of the millenium in Berlin, picked up skills for live performance with the computer, explored sound design and transferred the skills to play live with hardware. All this led him to experimental ambient created with tapes and synths. Learning, growing or ageing, whatever you like to call it. As time goes by human beings are changing and so is the art. Think of POOLcast 039 like a time capsule and maybe in the future we find some more.

Your turn now.

POOLcast 038 - Hainbach

Happy new year to everybody. The POOL Berlin wishes every single one of you health, safety, joy and love. No matter where the journey will take you, you have the power to make the most of it. Like Theodore Roosevelt once said: "Believe you can and you're halfway there."

The next chapter in our journey takes us deep into the realm of analog noises and magnetic fields. We invited Hainbach to create the first episode of POOLcast in 2019. Hainbach is known as musician, music technologist and YouTuber and provides us with a selection of unreleased material. In his pieces he mangles aggregators, transforms vivid rhythms to shaking grooves and mutates playful melodies to mesmerizing scapes. Good foundation for a proper winter couch voyage.

Get a cup of bliss and enjoy.

POOLcast 037 - Collab Special - Second Dream ( Benjamin Fehr & Sloxxx )

The last POOLcast in 2018 brings us a new special episode. With the collaboration between Benjamin Fehr & Sloxxx we say goodbye to 2018 and look forward to the coming year. There are still plenty of ideas for our POOLcast, some are straight on the way and many more are in our minds.

But this is future, now it is the time of the year where we should focus on ourselves and the people close to us. Let the past behind and don't care about what may will come. The collaborative project “Second Dream” of Benjamin Fehr and Sloxxx has all the ingredients for a perfect ending of 2018. Playful nostalgia, subtle humor, hidden melancholy, eccentric exciters and a lot of beautiful motifs.

The POOL Berlin wishes all of you a lovely time for the remaining days in 2018 and we will see you in the next year.

POOLcast 036 - PLO

We starting off season four of POOLcast. A good moment to bring an all time favorite back, PLO. Recorded at a session with Demas, ANN, Dr.Nojoke, GNILYF and the artist formerly known as from karaoke to stardom. For the third appearance of PLO in our POOLcast serie, they need no further introducing - a unspecified number of artists playing an full improvised set with computers, samplers, drum machines, modulars, pedals, springs, tape machines etc. But before we lapse into nerd talk or similar, we just leave you with a quote by Stanley Kubrick this time.

“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent, but if we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”

POOLcast 035 - GNILYF

We are closing our third season of POOLcast with a mixtape by GNILYF. What we use to send a lovey message out to all our fans, listers and of cause the POOLcast artist for their incredible art starting from POOLcast 001 to 035 and beyond.

Keep up to a vision for almost three years now is most unlikely nowadays. When arts, if it’s pictures, videos or music, are goods everybody can consum anytime in the most parts of the world. Beside all the benefits creators and consumers could have from social media, software developments and access to tools they need for their craftsmanship, there are trade offs. if it’s the silly amount accessible art or the perceived need or paternalism by companies how we create or share art. All of us know and experience these issues. But the biggest problem we have nowadays with enjoying artworks is that we think we don't have enough time for it. All the masses of art, the free access and the entertainment creates a feeling of missing something. But considering that every day has 24 hours, you realize that it's not the lack of time that's the problem, but how we use it. Instead of chasing after all we could see, hear, show or have, we should simply devote ourselves fully to the possibilities that lie right in front of us..

All the Best The POOL Berlin

POOLcast 034 - FØNØ

In this year's September issue of our monthly POOLcast series we present you a work by the Spanish artist FØNØ. We are happy to see that the goals we set ourselves with POOLcast are bearing fruit. Be it for artists who looking for a platform for experimental music or as inspiration for musicians who want to explore the versatility of art beyond their usual routines.

This is also the case with FØNØ. He reached out to us with an experimental composition of environmental recordings and acoustic instruments, supported by a surface of tapes and noises. He transforms musical and non-musical chords, raising sounds of piano, cello, guitar or violin into textures and atmospheres. It feels like receiving mysterious transmissions from a vanished isle via an old radio. Searching, hoping, redeeming, loving messages. With his work FØNØ creates a constant stream of alternating and merging emotions. Everytime you listen to it you will discover a new layers, transitions between feelings or musical notation.

Twice is duty.

POOLcast 033 - Schloss Mirabell

It's still summer here in Berlin. But that doesn't stop us from offering a platform for our vision of unconditional creativity. For POOLcast 033 we have invited Schloss Mirabell to share their work with you.

Florina's creative career began at an early age with training on the cello. Followed by her curiosity for contemporary music, and since contemporary art today often goes hand in hand with technology, it is not surprising that she chose to study the cognitive science of music and language. Florina's further development shows that creativity is a driving force in art as well as in science. She combined sound and neurorehabilitation and received her doctorate on the role of sound in robot-assisted therapy procedures. She is currently working as a futurologist in a think tank. She passionately pursues the unknown and models ideas that cannot yet be grasped linguistically in musical worlds.

POOLcast 032 - Ditch

Summer POOLcast number two. For 032 we have invited Ditch from Japan, who currently lives in Berlin. Ditch is a long time member of the electronic music scene, with release on label as minibar, microcosm, kalimari to mention a few. His music currently employs modular experiments and jazz progressions embedded in minimalist ambiences.

For POOLcast Ditch provided us a recording in tribute to jazz. Fieldtextures and soundscapes serving as a foundation which he paired with brushed percussions and plucked synth sounds. Enjoy.

POOLcast 031 - Jamie Woods

Its 15th of june, time for the new POOLcast. The Summer has landed and many of maybe already in summer vacation or short before to leave. No matter if you are the beach type or prefer to go to the mountains. No matter if city or countryside, chilling or partying, have fun and a good rest.

Who know a place where you can do both is Jamie Woods, creator of this month’s POOLcast. Jamie lived in Ibiza and now Berlin and “take inspiration from the magic of both these places”. Regular he is producing and playing minimal house and techno. Over the recent years Jamie developed even more of an interest in sound and the design of it. Which he thinks made him “appreciate drones, ambient weirdness/fun and sparse drums / percussion more, and the way it can affect the way you feel”. Perfect timing for us that he discovered POOLcast and contacted us.

Jamie put a colourful and expressive selection together, with melodic, rhythmic and experimental pieces, moving through the fields of ambient, drone and electronic.

See you next month.

POOLcast 030 - Collab Special - Übü ( Thoreau + Khmgnff )

Thirty is a special number, for this reason we have a special for today's POOLcast. We asked Thoreau and KHMGNFF to give us a glimpse of their collaboration project ‘Übü’. KHMGNFF, as we know from our 3rd episode of POOLcast, is managing the Micromod / Microrama Label, is into jazz, minimal and ambient. Thoreau back in the days, the time she made the 4th episode of POOLcast, was also into drone, ambient and minimal. Over the years Thoreau reconnected with her techno spirit, which always was on the brink of breaking through. Both gained experience, skills and dreams over the last years they made music. Which makes Übü the perfects example that the result of a collaboration of two artist is more than the sum of its parts. Thoreau and KHMGNFF sharing a friendship, a common taste in music and complement each other seamlessly when making music. When you put it all together it’s seems like any other art collaboration. But in this case the outcome of one plus one is more than two. When the other one let you get access to your inner voice and something new vibrate within you, you creating something more than just art.

For POOLcast Übü gave us a dark, minimalistic episode that descends into a deep techno journey.

POOLcast 029 - Dr.Nojoke

This month’s issue of POOLcast was recorded by Dr.Nojoke. He was the one who gave our journey a name. By opening his kitchen for us and many others he provided a melting pot for inspiration, ideas, visions and friendships. The POOL Berlin, POOLcasts and PLO are all products of this. Almost a tradition at this kitchen parties are Dr.Nojoke’s rare Vinyl sets. So we are very happy to present you one of his vinyl collage as POOLcast 029. For those who know Dr.Nojoke for his "Clikno"-branded Minimal Techno with dancing basslines, now you can experience his passion for music collection. Putting a vinyl on the turntable always come with a little briefing about the artist and the work, a story about the recording or just a passionate speak about a peculiar element in the piece. Of cause we can’t provide you this experience though his POOLcast, but with this point in mind it’s up to your imagination to find the stories behind the pieces he has chosen.

POOLcast 028 - L/N/A

For episode 028 we invited L/N/A. She is a Berlin based artist who “loves to collect and assemble all kinds of experimental, psychedelic sounds, found ones and homemade instant compositions. Presenting them to people and inspiring spontaneous contemporary dance - sessions on the dancefloor gives her great pleasure”. Perfect conditions for a POOLcast submission. Challenging the listeners with something new and usage of distinctive material is one of the top priorities on the POOLcast agenda. Her work is fulfilling, impulsive, versatile and has an almost divining core. The mixture of instrumental pieces, mesmerizing voices, vivid objects and jazz excursions sounds like stories from the past and the corresponding demand of a new departure. Spring.

POOLcast 027 - Nitz

For this month's episode of the POOLcast we invited Nitz from Slovenia. He is part of the scene since ages. If is because of his performances in Europe or his work with labels like Bleepsequence or Pluie/Noir. For POOLcast 027 Nitz has compiled a set with tracks of himself, records of his backmost corner of his collection and recently snatched gems.

The outcome is emotional. A key point for POOLcasts and maybe also an overused catch phrase. But “emotional” isn’t just a lazy description than more like a theme. For example - you listen this the day after Valentine's Day, Nitz’s work could sounds hopeful, electrifying or maybe it’s sound more melancholic and afar. You decide. Listen today, in a week, in a year and learn about yourself.

POOLcast 025 - Fake Electronics

It's time for the POOLcast in December and thus the last POOLcast of the year. We had a short review of 2017 in our anniversary issue in November. The focus is now on the next year. The announced changes will be continued over the next few months and as it is only just over one week until Christmas, we have decided to give you a little present. From now on you can download our POOLcasts in all usual formats via Bandcamp. ( https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/ )

We also gave something to ourselves. POOLcast 025 is provided by Fake Electronics, one of the artists on our list from the very beginning. He sat down and gave us a work that was created entirely on his modular system. One take recordings with his live rig. Which has already been used in several shows like Mutek and Outline Festival. In addition, Fake Electronics provides us with early insights into works that will be on his upcoming album in 2018. His issue of POOLcast offers everything you would expect from a live modular set. Emotional drones, charming strange textures, vivid grooves and mesmerizing scapes.

We wish you all happy holidays and a good start into the new year.

POOLcast 024 - unaporte

In november 2015 we publish the first POOLcast, two years with many different pieces by all kinds of artists. From young to old, with new and well-known faces as well as people from the city or far away. We have always tried to create POOLcast with the credo 'artistic work first' and no worry this will not chance. But we will see chances in the near future. The first and most obvious is the new look, as usual for our anniversary. In the next months we will continue to introduce changes and improvements. One thing that will not change is that we will publish a POOLcast every 15th of the month.

For POOLcast 024 we invited unaporte from Colombia. A young artist from the other side of the world. He knows better than anyone else how to create an almost tangible atmosphere with sounds. He probably owes this to the fact that, in addition to his musical abilities, he also promotes his pictorial skills. For his POOLcast entry he found inspiration in various areas. Lecture about the interplay between geography and art, interludes on his brother's guitar and recording things around him. The small tape machine and a microphone are daily companion for Jonathan. To capture inspiration where he encounters them provides a very special touch to his work.

Profound, emotional and thrilling. Enjoy.

POOLcast 023 - Benjamin Fehr

The final episode in the second year of our POOLcast series. Its the time of the year again, when the days become dark earlier and some of us already getting new vision for the next year. “Dark” and “Clear” is also a credo of Benjamin Fehr, creator of the POOLcast 023.

Mr. Fehr is a well known part of the electronic music scene in Berlin since decades. With his productions on Grow, Nervmusic, his own imprint Catenaccio and appearances as a DJ, he is also known beyond the national borders. “Groove Noir” is title of his events series and even the best term to describe this musical works. Minimalistic, dark but always with a special emotional timbre such as unagitated grooves that animate to move.

For POOLcast, Benjamin dug deep into the dark corners of his record collection and made his selection with a clear vision. The result is an intensive ride between ambient, vintage and a little flavor of punk. Nothing more to say, listen and to say it with the words of Benjamin …

“Stay dark and clear.”

POOLcast 022 - PLO

We have published twenty-two POOLcasts in a row, now. Music by 20 different artists. Unique pieces from all over the world. Canada, USA, Colombia, France, England, Switzerland, Australia, Sri Lanka, etc. and many more to come. But there is one in our line up which has a special meaning and also delivers the core spirit of the POOLcast the most - PLO.

POOL Lab Orchestra is the core of everything that THE POOL BERLIN and POOLcast define. Bringing people, knowledge and art on all levels together, especially while PLO meetings with its basic idea of live jams and visuals. During PLO's sessions, countless artists were involved and new ones get invited again and again. Each session is a unique and independent experience. Musicians and their instruments, whether on a laptop, synthesizer, drum computer or modular system, perform music together without any rules or genre restrictions. Loud, quiet, fast, slow, straight, broken, warm, cold, bright, dark. All sorts of conditions a session can adopt. Sometimes coherently in a marathon lasting several hours or sometimes quickly fluctuating in a few minutes.

The recording, which is now released as POOLcast 022, was created at a meeting of 7 artists. Namely Matt & Mark Thibideau, Dr. Nojoke, Demas, ANN, frOm KaraOkE tO StardOm and Waldboot. Played on 2 laptops, Elektron Digitakt & Octatrack, iPad, Korg Monologue and 2 modular systems.

POOLcast 021 - Sasha Kaline

Its august, the month when summer ends. Last chance for vacation if you were not already. We had our break from the urban landscape towards nature and everyone brought stories back. Also Sasha Kaline, responsible for this episode of our POOLcast series, had this time in nature and probably made his own experiences which are worth telling.

Unfortunately stories about nature, in its pure form, aren't ordinary anymore. Nature became a product and has to serve us - keep us alive, healthy and entertained. In the early history of mankind the world was a mystery. People told themselves tales about creation, ancient gods, elder creatures and wisdoms about life. Nature was all-embracing and people were aware that they were part of the environment. But over thousands of years we demystify and subdued nature. The storytelling got lost. Nowadays people mainly talk about human things. We talking about politics, religions, money, technology, gossip, etc - all this gives us the feeling that we have everything under control. Maybe this is the reason we separate ourselves more and more from nature. Although it has been shown, that nature is much more than we could imagine. Now we know nature isn’t just green forests, blue oceans and white mountains. Radioactivity, solar winds and quantum entanglement are also a piece of it. The flora, fauna and infrastructure on Earth playing just a tiny role. Perhaps we need new types of stories to open our mind for the true nature again.

Sasha’s submission is called “Concrete Tales” and could be such new kind of narrative. The world is not static, everything always changes. Also at Mr. Kaline’s soundwork. He crafted pieces with his modular, took field recordings and mixed it with some vintage vinyls. The results in a melange, which is constantly in motion, and never takes firm forms even in the case of repeated hearing.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 020 - Mod303

Twenty. In years, the time when you realize, you are between childhood and the rest of your life. Your are not a kid anymore! The structure of your family is changing. Your mom is already planning to rebuild your old room to have a vinyl listening space, after she found her old jazz record collection in the basement. Your sister(s)/brother(s) become a friend after years of conflict. The meaning of the word ‘family’ begins to change and you learning that you can have more than one.

This or maybe the complete opposite applies to our next POOLcast artist, Mod303. The reason we are talking about family is obviously, Mod303 is a duo of brothers, living in/by Paris. But the second and most imported reason why we talking about family is that Mod2 and Nino ( Mod303 ) are part of a global, our global, family. This begins with releases on Klangscheiben and Wondermachine Musique, goes on with starting the own imprints ‘micromod’ and ‘microrama’ and ends with an ‘album residency’ on Archipel. Special mention deserve the work for mircomod and the sublabel microrama. They are working on the frontier of experimental and ambient music. Not suprising that POOLcast and mircomod/mircorama crossed their streams several times. Also this time, for the new POOLcast.

Mod303’s POOLcast edition delivers the right mixture of signature sounds and label showcase. Soundscapes and synth lines shaping proper, modern ambient music. Drums and layers of textures and field recordings ensure a sense of coherence.

Enjoy.

POOLcast 019 - Ray Dansky

The second half of the second year for POOLcast. Every month a new piece of art by a different artist, from all over world. A challenging task in every aspect, from the artwork, over the mastering to this text. But that's how it is. Art should be challenging, right?

This time it’s Ray Dansky’s turn. Member of the inner circle and part of PLO. Seems like decades as he started making music and he is a perfect example to show which challenges exist in art. There are two types of challenges and both are part of a causal chain. Type one prompts the beholder. In the simplest case by just to listen, read or view the piece of art. Ideally to think about the art and in the most desirable case to act caused by the work of art. All three points have in common that they are results of decisions. Decisions - the second link in the causal chain. Decisions are also the foundation for making art. To make decisions is the other kind of challenges - the challenge for the artist. All starts with the decisions made by the artist, this leads to the challenge of the artist, to the challenge of the beholder and finally to a decision made by the beholder. A causal chain. Don’t mix up cause and effect, don’t try to be artist and beholder simultaneously. If you as artists try to master both challenges at the same time, it becomes more difficult to see yourself as an artist.

Easy said, right. As many others also Ray faces both types of challenges. On the one hand his style is what i describe as two-sided emotionally experimental music with excerpts of minimal beats or how i like to call it ‘anti-grooves’ - challenging. On the other hand he also facing the challenge with himself. “What is possible, how far can i go, what is my work of art and can I dare to challenge the listeners”. No doubt he can - he should.

Challenge accepted.

POOLcast 018 - The Marx Trukker

The first half of may is over and that means it’s time for this month’s POOLcast. As we planned POOLcast a few years ago, we had a precise vision of that we want to do. A platform where music stands for itself. A place where an artist can present the purest outcome of her/his creative work. Right or wrong should not exist here. The audience have to adjust, not the artist.

Without doubt, we had some artists in mind from the beginning and one name on the list was The Marx Trukker. He found home on different imprints like Noorden, Pluir/Noir, Grow and Untold Stories. His productions have some sort of an “emotional dialect” of familiar styles, no matter if it's drone, ambient, techno or minimal. A try-out-guy without genre borders. So it's not surprising that we catch him at the moment when he got part of a new project. Together with Cindy Denner he runs a radio show called ”Movements and Aural Spaces”.

Their goal is to experiment with physical and audible movement. Exploring the variability in relation to space. Via field recordings, they focus on the audible perception of body, space and movement and try to make visual experiences, such as exhibition visits, performances and dance performances, audible for the radio. The Marx Trukker's POOLcast episode is an exclusive piece of this approach.

Take this opportunity and experience something different.

POOLcast 017 - Sven Laux

We are in the middle of our second season and the year of 2017 is starting to transform. The days are getting longer and the shadows shorter. Grey becomes blue, brown turns into green and stiff becomes vivid, a change that cycles every year. But there are also transformations that aren’t frequently and obvious: The alterations, which happen in life - uncontrollable without a definable start or end.

Sven Laux is going through one of these transformations. In his early years he was known for his minimal techno. His remarkable way of microsampling, his use of textures of glitches and cuts paired with rolling grooves became a trademark for him. With time passing by he increasingly made use of synth sounds, pads, chords and atmospheres. Then he reduced the beats, the first downtempo track was released. Sven played more and more with keys and synths. The first ambient and drone tracks appeared in his discography. He studied the structure of orchestral compositions and became obsessed with soundtracks. This led to the first sound work for trailers and even award winning films like Courage.

It’s about time to take a closer look at his ongoing change. A year ago we invited Sven for an episode of POOLcast. And even in this past year you can clearly hear how his music changed. Back then there were drones and scapes, ambient music with clusters of experimental textures. Nowadays the transformation into a composer of soundtracks is nearly finished. The second POOLcast episode of Sven is full of soundscapes, pianos and strings, beautifully arranged.

You are invited to witness this audible transformation.

POOLcast 016 - Hepamine

For POOLcast 016 we have another brand new face. Back from the east coast of the United States we made a stop in London, where we found Hepamine. Student of fine arts at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Whether painting, making music, discovering sound and video - Hepa is exploring the intersections of the arts caused by modern technologies.

Technologies invented decades ago make it possible to expand the range of tools. These technologies were discovered and used by artists, through synthesizers, tapes for audio and video, 3D graphics and programming. In the last generations these gadgets were further developed and the access became easier. We spend years to figure out what is possible and how to do it. Always struggling with the curse of technologies, a missing link that divide our vision from the result. But today all that technologies are so advanced and deeply integrated in our lives, that it’s possible to anyone to make art with it. That what hold us back and stood between our vision and the result begins to disappear. All we need is a boundless mind.

We all can benefit from these times. Technologies can make any thought visible, audible and make it come alive. Nowadays it is possible to create and experience art at the same time. In that way Hepamine approached this POOLcast episode. A live recording in which the composition became an instrument in itself. Driven by the moment, inspired and experienced while making.

Pass mental boundaries, enjoy and make art.

POOLcast 015 - Overshift

After grazing in our own garden the last months with POOLcasts from Akatana over Dinelka and Wiklow to Anomali we had the feeling that it is time again for fresh faces. We move over the atlantic ocean: US east coast, New Jersey, and order some west coast music from Overshift.

In the case of Overshift, fresh face does not mean newcomer. He is active for years and released tons of music on various minimal and techno labels. Lately he explored more and more experimental spheres and released his “Contemplate EP” on Micromod music, whereon you can hear his techno background in forms of sequenced synth lines and percussion grooves. All this he spiced up with ambiences, vivid textures and driving drones.

For his POOLcast issue he pushed himself a big step towards experimental music. Overshift starts with music concrete inspired west coast freestyle and heads more and more to east coast sound where big drones and epic pads preach good old ambient.

Take a cup of tape hiss and listen.

POOLcast 014 - Anomali

We hope anyone of you enjoyed the holidays and had a good start in the new year. It is time to begin 2017. The second episode of POOLcasts year two brings a work of ‘Anomali’. A solo side project of Dr.Nojoke. The right one for these days with long shadows.

To tell you anything what Dr.Nojoke aka Anomali aka Frank Bogdanowitz has did in this long active period as musician is another epic story and it's a different quest. Anomali is a project that search for the layers beyond matter. Essence & Emptiness. What remains if light vanished, darkness is no term. Time isn't a value - eternity becomes finite. Nothingness? If that's the truth, must we fear it or may we find beautyness as its purest form?

Frank describes Anomali as a research and therapeutic project about essence & emptiness. A reaction on the abundance of information and the distending speed of time’. For POOLcast 014 Anomali creates constantly expanding and contracting structures of drone, experimental and ambient.

Nothing more to say - listen.

POOLcast 013 - Wiklow

We here at ‘The POOL Berlin’ constantly thinking about and working on our projects. We have many new ideas for POOLcast as well as for The POOL Berlin in general. With our last issue for 2016 we announce upcoming changes for 2017 and how we share the POOLcast in the future.

But for now were looking at the cozy time that lies ahead and invited Wiklow from canada for POOLcast 013. Wiklow aka Myke Dean is a producer and live act from Montreal, Canada. He’s linked to the Hushlamb crew and host of the Free Range show on Lo Signal CKUT 90.3FM. Playing music from more club orientated music imprints over to all the small diamants of the post techno independence scene. He tries to search and spotlight the diversity of our electronic music scene.

Personally Wiklow found his glowing sanctuary in ambient music. For POOLcast 013 he choose a picturesquely sequenced version of ambient. Not afraid of using beats and grooves Creating a cosm where deep synth tracks interfere with dense ambiences.

Turn 2016 off. See you next year.

POOLcast 012 - GNILYF

The first edition in the second year of our POOLcast series we deliver an exclusive mix from Gnilyf, me. Part of the POOL Berlin and the POOLcast team. Member of the open collaboration project PLO, graphic designer at Klangscheiben and mastering engineer for mircomod music. And because it seems weird to me to write the same kind of text, like I did for the wonderful artists before, i will leave a personal note here.

Over more than a decade I became a self-educated graphic and sound designer. Enjoyed music, books, movies and games. Years in which I discover more and more what is possible by the interplay of the arts. Words, images and sound can shape new worlds. Not only the world that the creativity of the artist itself creates rather than the creativity that every person shapes in it own mind. A painting, a piece of music or a story can create million of imaginary worlds, based on the mind set and even by the daily mood of the beholder. The paint on canvas, the fibration of a string or the letters on a sheet of paper don't contain creativity on its own. These things are physical spells and mathematical wisdom. Mechanisms, the contrary of creativity. Art emerges from the dissonance of the pieces the artist create and the perspective of the beholder. And every attempt to reduce this dissonance will reduce your creativity and makes art more a mechanism.

With this personal guideline I arrange my POOLcast. Tracks from movie and game soundtracks combine with expressive instrumental pieces, the power of words and of cause synths. Sixty minutes creativity of different kind of artists with very different approaches. A challenging mixture of dynamics ranges in volume, frequencies and time.

Thank you for the first and enjoy the second year.

POOLcast 011 - Akatana

The first year of POOLcast comes to an end. After we had artists from many different places on earth, it is time for an inner rest and to prepare for the second year. Talented Akatana from france supports that plan and uses his POOLcast also for a mental preparation of his upcoming Japan tour.

And there could be no better way to do so than with the multi ethnic inspired music of Akatana. The mixture of foreign atmospheres, dreamy recordings and an intelligent use of mesmerizing grooves makes his sound work like a pathfinder through the vast mist of experimental, ambient and minimal music. An area where all kind of shapes and shades sometimes veils the truth behind the music - feelings.

Akatana’s POOLcast issue shows that those missing emotions probably exist in all forms of sound but it's not easy to find the right spot when you rove through this enormous blurry haze. But don't worry, sometimes searching and finding point in the same direction. All you need is patience or just the right person who shows you those pieces.

Let go on an intimate and vivid ramble.

POOLcast 010 - Dinelka

For this edition we have a remarkable story to tell. Almost 8000 km behind several seas, vast deserts and frozen mountain ranges a young man discovered electronic music, found a label called micromod music, came in contact with an initiative of Border Movement, Ableton, the Goethe Institut and got the chance to spend the summer in Berlin. This young man is from Colombo, Sri Lanka and is named Dinelka.

Unexplainable, how an ocean of possibilities leads to a new brother in spirit. So it seems ironic that an ‘ocean’, which he had to overcome and now tears us apart, is the best metaphor to describe his musical work. Like the sea you will explore more than the surface reveals. Under shimmering shades and noisy billows unfolds vivid life. You find familiar and exoctic sounds, sometimes glitchy distorted and sometimes with soothing harmonies. And if you go for ground dive where deep grooves of unique pattern emerge, you will find the full weirdness and beauty of his extraneous sound worlds.

Dinelka’s POOLcast 010 is the perfect example for this comparison. After your first step into it, bubbly sounds flowing around you, everyday noise merge with piling waves, every minute drag you further outside. And before you realize what is happening, you has entered an unusual and extraordinary world where you can't predict what you discover next.

Hold your breath, it’s a long and exciting trip.

POOLcast 009 - ANN

ANN is based in Berlin - an often written phrase these days. But in this case its existential truth. Born in Berlin, witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, survived the Techno dawn in the 90’s and accompanied the development of the city into a cultural melting pot.

Not many beings had experience high frequently switching systems between order, No Man's Land and post-national society. A mind shaped by ideals and dispersed in time. So it isn’t surprising that ANN’s musical work is an always transforming haze of polyrhythmic grooves, hypnotic synth sequences and amorphic textures. A unworried approach in crafting sounds and an enlightened mixture of the analog and digital domains leads to constantly changing but distinctive pieces.

Giving the formless a shape and shaping the formless. This seems to be the purpose of this POOLcast episode. ANN bends spinning black structures nearly to the infinity and reshaping them one after another into a vast new one.

Reimagining the black twelve.

POOLcast 008 - A Ocio

Jonathan Ariza aka A Ocio is an illustrator and electronic musician resident in Bogota Colombia. Finding inspiration in Colombia’s nature, Bogota’s urban life, an imaginary mind and the present past. Deeply influenced by his father’s spirit for music, playing instruments and art.

‘Influences’ is one of the keywords to discribe A Ocio’s work. Wandering around in a surrealistic tinged surrounding with tranquility and a psychedelic eye. Keeping ears and mind open for this ‘influences’ that will create a new piece of music. Taking sounds from this world, sounds from manufacturers, abandoned environments and television combining it with played instruments like piano or violin to creating a new world. Another world. Like a surreal dream, a familiarity accompanied with the odd feeling that something is different.

For the 8th edition of the POOLcast Jonathan pack ‘influances” from cheerful, energetic, sad, thoughtful days into a melange of time, air and ‘sentimental things’. Complex texture, twisted sounds and abstract arrangments leading into dreamy soundscapes with catchy, melody sequences.

Time is liquid - you can hear it.

POOLcast 007 - Storlon

Storlon, born in Switzerland and grown up between mountains. Turned 18 he left his home and gained experience in California and Geneva. Filled with moments of life he decides to return to his beloved mountains of the swiss alps.

This journey, a grounded lifetime and a network of fellow musicians reflects in his sound which always balance between wanderlust and a cosy nostalgia. Sometimes weirdly melancholic and sometimes jazzy, dubby and dancy but never cheesy. So it isn't a surprise that he is involved in many different projects. Starting with the Berlin based collective of UNOIKI, to a jazz combo called Cash System Industry up to Klubmed a moniker together with Wondermachine’s Andres Marcos.

And wondermachine is also the right word to discribe this POOLcast. No matter what you put in or which program you choose the result is unexpected. Colored, dark, cotton, starfish, elephant - doesn’t even makes any sense but the outcome is always deeply wonderful.

Press start and just wait what’s happening.

Her Father was a talented drummer and piano player and she wanted to emulate him but didn’t possess the talent to do so.At the age of 25 this chance arrived in the form of an impromptu dj set at her birthday party. This sparked a movement in her that would create some of the best feelings ever experienced.

Wanting to create music instead of just playing her favorite producers was the goal from the start. When she creates music all aspects are enjoyed and the goal is to be as original as possible. Her favorite toy for creating music is the Ableton push. She loves the weird mixed in with the beautiful; contrast of the epic and storytelling with musical  scenes. Loves fantasy and science fiction and it appears in her music in spades. Drag—in is also a co-founder of Future Montreal; a net label that has showcased homegrown Montreal talent as a collective of artists. With more projects on the way we are excited to see what is in store. She is a talented producer and a very unorthodox methodologist.

Her POOLcast is no exception to that with a melodic space voyage into other dimensions.

Event horizon - no way back.

POOLcast 005 - Sven Laux

Sven Laux is part of a modest faction of producers that have been faithfully progressing the evolution of micro composition. Born in Neubrandenburg, Germany, Laux started writing electronic music in 1998 after discovering a talent for meticulously sampling and looping audio.

His unique take on music making has him sharing the company of artisans like Pheek, Ezekiel Honig and Marc Neyen. Laux has become notorious for manipulating foundsounds and employing layers of field recordings in his work. In a discography that stretches back to 2006, there remains a prevalent underlying passion for the obscure. His signature sound has earned a wealth of international support on innovative imprints like Microcosm Music, 31337 Records, Archipel, Dewtone Recordings, Sleep Is Commercial and Unfoundsound.

In the last years Laux dived deeper into cinematic sounds, ambient, experimental sound desgin and soundtracks. So it happened that he starts his own label ‘Seasides On Postcards”. Therefore we are very proud that he gives us a glimpse of his future vision in music. His POOLcast is an exciting journey throught movie scores and experimental ‘Maschinen’ - music.

Lay back.

POOLcast 004 - Thoreau

Thoreau aka Bec Tate is a DJ from Sydney Australia, having recently moved to Berlin.

Her music is inspired by her new surroundings. This mix is particularly contextual, with it’s tonality and direction acting as a response to conversations and interactions with the PLO crew. Great conversationalists and open minded thinkers, these gents have ignited a deepened appreciation and perspective about the history of music in Berlin, techno and how one articulates their own unique truth through sound.

The root of her POOLcast is experimental techno and tribal rhythms. A darker exploration, it is a reflection of the feelings evoked within her from the dark, grey and sometimes depressive Berlin winter, which she finds beautiful and transformative, yet incredibly challenging.

Have a listen.
