Still quarantined, but making the best of it! Cera, Jamie, and Kevin discuss the merits and difficulty of exercise in quarantine, and the ladies try to convince Kevin to try yoga instead of his preferred practice of punching bags. We also open up about our frustrations with the NM Governor's Covid-19 decisions and how they've been communicated. Finally, we unpack the rich insights from the recent sermon on the motherly love of our Heavenly Father.

We'd love to hear from you via our Facebook and Instagram pages. Have a great week!

Hello friends! Jamie, Cera, and Kevin talk through the challenge of holding on to hope when we're facing times of genuine fear. We talk about how we tend to pray busy and stay busy for the things of God instead of being still and being with God. Finally, we discuss the tragic death of Ahmed Aubrey and how real hope allows for both lamenting loss and the promise of restoration. It's a powerful conversation you don't want to miss.

We're back!

We would love to hear from you and know how you all are doing! You can still email us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or you can reach out to us on Facebook or Instagram as well.

We hope you all are staying safe and doing well. We look forward to getting back to recording and interacting with all of you!

Necessary Risk Pt. 2 - Be Prepared by CBC Las Cruces

View Details

Today’s episode is brought to you by Missing Mike Productions.

Mike is out today, but Jamie, Cera, and Kevin dive into the new sermon series in the book of Nehemiah.

Nehemiah’s story is about so much more than just rebuilding a wall. In his opening message of the series, Kevin highlighted the risks Nehemiah would take as he responded to the critical needs of people he’d never met, in a place he’d never visited, and whose suffering was due to circumstances he didn’t cause. And yet, Nehemiah felt a profound sense of compassion, concern, and personal responsibility to help.

Jamie, Cera, and Kevin break down the qualities present in Nehemiah, and why those qualities are needed at a time when virtue-signaling and comfortable compartmentalization are valued over faithful risk and personal responsibility.

Remember to send us your comments or recordings to help us celebrate episode 100!

We’d love to hear from you! Send us questions /comments at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or on our Instagram or Facebook pages.

Have an awesome week!

Necessary Risk Pt. 1 - First Followers by CBC Las Cruces

Cera, Jamie, Kevin, and Mike are back again to discuss a whole bunch of stuff this week!

We do stay more on track this week, probably due to Cera being a part of the crew again. We get into Dennis's message from Sunday and discuss how we go about actually being aware of God's presence in our daily lives and how we aren't meant to compartmentalize our lives.

We discuss ideas like gratitude and how that plays into our daily efforts to live every part of our lives for Christ. Mike also struggles to remember a passage in the Bible that helps him make his point (It's Matthew 11, I looked it up afterward) and Kevin lets people in on one of the biggest secrets of the Afterparty - that Mike writes the descriptions for each episode!

We hope you'll join us in the fun stuff we have planned for Episode 100 coming up in a few weeks. We would love to hear from you either through recording or just a written message as to why you listen and what you've enjoyed over the last 100 episodes, or even what you're hoping to hear us talk about in the next hundred. You can email us your entries at podcast@cbclascruces.org or just write to us if you have any other sort of questions or comments on topics we've discussed lately.

We hope you all have a great week!

It is a sad day, listeners. Cera is not in this episode. Apparently, she had "work" to do or something like that. It all sounds very suspicious, but she should be back on the podcast next week!

Jamie, Kevin, and Mike make up for Cera's absence by talking about...everything. We talk about Aggie Basketball, the book of Ruth, the last sermon in the series, redemption, and the seeming contradiction between faith and works.

That is just the starting point as we get into plenty of other topics on this episode and we hope you'll join us and enjoy the ride!

If you have any questions or thoughts on the topics we covered today you can always reach us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or by reaching out to us on Facebook or Instagram.

We hope you all have a great week!

Moving Forward Pt. 6 - Redemptive Love by CBC Las Cruces

View Details

It's the season of love! That's what we're told anyway.

As we weren't able to record a podcast last week, Jamie, Cera, Kevin, and Mike discuss the message about relationships from two weeks ago.

The conversation quickly goes into our thoughts on friendship, love, over-spiritualizing relationships, and making marriage, spouses, or even children, an idol. We have a lot of great insight from varying perspectives and we hope you can find parts you agree with and even some comments that you don't agree with. We'd love to hear your thoughts on all of it!

You can reach out to us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram. While our conversation gets a bit heavy at some points, we actually do like relationships and marriages, in case you couldn't tell as three of our members are married! But we also discuss how you are complete and can fulfill who you are in Christ if you remain single. We cover a lot of ground today!

We hope you all have a good time celebrating Valentine's Day, and if that's not really for you, then we still hope you have a great weekend!

Talk to you all again soon!

We hope you're buckled in for this one dear listeners because we go just about everywhere in this episode!

Jamie, Cera, Kevin, and Mike dive into Sunday's sermon and explore the paradox of coincidence and God's plan. We also talk discernment, prayer, God's redemption through all of our decisions and life situations, how the Bible works as literature, and why it wasn't meant to be read or studied verse-by-verse.

It's a fun discussion that goes beyond just Sunday's message, so we hope you'll get some good thoughts and discussions from it as well. If you want to reach out to us to talk about anything we said or about any questions you have, you can always reach us at podcast@cbclascruces.org or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram.

We hope you have a great weekend! And go, Niners!

Cera is back! And we are marching closer and closer to episode 100 everyone!

We hope you'll join Jamie, Cera, Kevin, and Mike as we continue our discussion about the current sermon series going through the book of Ruth. We go a little deeper on many of the points brought up by Kevin on Sunday including faith v. trust, being emptied not meaning we're abandoned, and even how discipleship plays a part in Ruth and Naomi's story.

As always, you can reach us with questions or comments at podcast@cbclascruces.org or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram. We'd love to hear your feedback on what we discuss, questions you have on sermon material, or even if you find something interesting in the news and want to know our thoughts. We'd love to interact with you all more!

We hope you all have a great week and we look forward to talking to you all again soon!

Listeners, we have a very important topic to discuss in today's episode. Granted, every podcast we do is important, but today Jamie, Kevin, and Mike discuss whether or not to allow Cera to join the Afterparty crew.

Cera is in Orlando, which allows us to have an honest discussion about what she could bring to the team, and why Kevin and Mike are scared of her. We hope you'll bear with us as we talk about our faux hesitations about letting Cera join permanently.

Actually, our main topic of discussion is the new sermon series Kevin began last Sunday and different issues like grief, despair, God's presence in everyday life, how small decisions lead to big changes, and why men should be reading and learning from books like Ruth and Esther.

If you have any questions or concerns you can email us at podcast@cbclascruces.org or reach us on Facebook or Instagram.

We hope you all have a great weekend!

Greetings one and all! In the final episode of 2019, Jamie, Mike, and Kevin begin by addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding holiday greetings; is saying "Happy Holidays" really an attempt to take Christ out of Christmas? Is boldly saying "Merry Christmas" an effective way to spread the love of Christ? Kevin explains why "X-mas" is more Christian than you might think.

The conversation then turns to Mike's recent sermon on peace, in which he pointed out that Jesus doesn't necessarily bring the peace we might have expected, but instead he brings the kind of peace we need, even if we don't understand how or why.

Enjoy and remember to connect with us on Facebook and Instagram. You can also email us - podcast@cbclascruces.org.

Finally, the Afterparty crew wishes you and yours the happiest of holidays, the merriest Christmas, and the most bomdiggity New Year!

Jamie and her voice are back with Mike and Kevin this week as they discuss the lessons and takeaways from Calvary's recent series on disability. The conversation then turns to the next sermon series entitled, "Christmas Socks," which explores why the season of happy carols, twinkling lights, and holiday cheer is such a time of grief and loneliness for many. Finally, the crew celebrates Jamie's completion of the Harry Potter book series by geeking out in a spoiler-laden magical conversation!

We're back! Sort of.

After taking a week off for Thanksgiving, we jump back into the podcast but in a different fashion. Unfortunately, Jamie wasn't able to join Kevin and Mike today, but we are joined by Cera and Christine to talk more about the conversation they had last week as part of our Extraordinary series!

We have a great conversation about inclusion and belonging in the church in general, but also how that specifically looks for people with disabilities, and how that also affects their family as a whole. Christine shares more about her experiences in church and ways her family manages day-to-day life as well. Our discussion then turns to why we think a sermon series on this topic is necessary to share with the whole church.

We hope you enjoy our conversation and are learning and enjoying the current sermon series. If you have any questions or comments you can always reach us at podcast@cbclascruces.org or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram. We're glad to be back and look forward to finishing up 2019 with you all!

This newest edition of the podcast is brought to you by Disney+ and Star Wars (Not really, but you'd believe it with how much we talk about it in this episode!)

Join Jamie, Kevin, and Mike this week as we discuss the first part of Kevin's new sermon series "Extraordinary."

We spend a lot of time talking about why it's not enough to just be friendly to our brothers and sisters with disabilities and what it looks like to aim to go beyond being friendly.

We are excited about the responses that we've already heard from people about the first message in this series and realize that this is a topic that isn't normally touched on in churches. But Calvary isn't your "normal" kind of church. We'd love to hear what you thought about the first message and what you think of the upcoming series. You can email us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or you can reach us on Facebook or Instagram.

And yes, we spend time talking about Disney+, The Mandalorian, several sports stories (Like the Aggies winning a football game!) and even check in on Jamie's progress through the Harry Potter books.

We will be taking next week off for Thanksgiving but we'll be back with you when December rolls around. We hope you have a great week and get to spend some good time with family for Thanksgiving next week!

It's time to talk about Experiences and Harry Potter!

Jamie, Kevin, and Mike jump into the final message in the SHAPE series, Experience. We spend some time talking about the sermon series as a whole and pick some of our favorite parts of the past few weeks.

We actually don't spend a whole lot of time talking about Harry Potter (although, we may have to do a special episode when Jamie finishes the books!) but we somehow tie it in to what we're talking about.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the SHAPE series and what you enjoyed about it. You can reach us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram.

In this week's episode of the Calvary Afterparty Podcast Jamie, Kevin, and Mike have some fun talking about why our personalities are just plain better than everyone else's. Well, maybe that's just Mike (Because fives will rule the world!)

On a serious note, we discuss why we think it's important that people, especially in the church, spend time figuring out and examining their own personalities. How knowing what makes you tick can better prepare you to fit the role that God has made you for in the body of Christ.

We also talk a little bit about sports and talk about one of the most important personality tests out there, which house you belong to at Hogwarts!

Join us in this episode that goes just about everywhere from Scripture to Ray Stevens. And as always if you have any questions or comments you can always email us at podcast@cbclascruces.org or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram.

Pardon the interruption, but Jamie, Kevin, and Mike are here to talk about a wide range of topics for the next hour or so!

In today's episode, we talk about everything from Beth Moore to Kanye West. We even delve into sports for a few minutes.

We also spend time talking about the latest sermon in the S.H.A.P.E. series, Attitude. The message was titled, "Do what you can with what you have" and touched on how we must strive to have an attitude of preparedness. We must be connected to be prepared to handle the situations that God presents to us, whether planned or, more likely if the opportunity arises as an interruption.

We also bring back a segment that has been missing lately: What we are doing, reading, and listening to! We should probably think of a more catchy title for the segment, but we hope you enjoy it all the same.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns you can always reach us at podcast@cbclascruces.org or by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram.

We hope you have a spooky Halloween week. And don't forget to join us on Thursday the 31st from 5:30-7:30 for our Fall Family Festival!

Shape Pt. 4: Do what you can with what you've got by CBC Las Cruces

View Details

This week Jamie, Kevin, and Mike discuss a little bit of everything. We talk about the State of the Church message that Kevin gave a couple of weeks ago before discussing the most recent sermon in the S.H.A.P.E. series.

That is all a prelude to the fun we have discussing the personality tests that we took. We get into our own personalities, both pros, and cons, as well as getting into some of our spiritual gifts and enneagram numbers. We all feel strongly that understanding your personality helps you understand how to react with people around you, helps you understand your own needs, and helps bring some context to why you do the things you do.

We hope you find value in our discussion about personalities, the state of Calvary, and why the church should be on board in doing things with enthusiasm and excellence. Jamie, Kevin, and Mike are back! It feels good to be recording together again and we have a lot to discuss this week so we hope you're ready!

We briefly revisit the conversation we had last time we recorded together right after the El Paso shooting. We realize that conversation was heavy and there was a lot said, so we felt it was worth checking back in and seeing where we all are now that we're about two months removed from that conversation.

We, then, jump into talking all about Pastor Kevin's last sermon series on Forgiveness. Since we didn't record during that entire series we do a bit of a recap of the entire thing. Thanks to Jamie's note-taking skills we have plenty to talk about and dissect from the last two months of sermons!

We're glad to be back and want to thank you all for your support these last 70-ish episodes. We'll hit episode 100 early in 2020 and we will definitely have something planned for that so stay tuned.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at podcast@cbclascruces.org, or message us on Facebook or Instagram. We'd love to talk to you all about different things we discuss so feel free to send us your questions, comments, or just random thoughts on things we're talking about, or just subjects you all are thinking about. We'd love to hear them and discuss them!

Thank you all again! We hope you have a great week!

After a much-needed break, the Afterparty is back! Climate change is an important and somewhat controversial topic. 16-year old activist Greta Thunberg's passionate speech to the United Nations has placed the issue in the headlines once again. What are we to make of climate change? To what extent is our planet changing? To what extent is natural, and to what extent is it caused by humans? How should Christian think theologically about this issue? Kevin sits down with Meteorologist, Anthony Brown to talk about it all!

Jamie and Mike will be back with Kevin in our next episode.

The crew also talks about Kevin’s recent message on sin. How do we navigate the countless ways we’re tempted to sin? Why is sin more than just breaking a rule? Is it possible for kindness, generosity, and self-sacrifice to be sinful?

Parents have an enormous influence on how kids conceptualize God and faith. How are they supposed to handle this responsibility? Some parents adopt a “do as I say, not as I do” posture, while others leave this job to “professionals” like pastors, priests, or other vocational ministers. Neither of these approaches is healthy because they do contain what kids really need for developing a faith that sticks. In reality, kids don’t need parents to be perfect, or to be professionals. They need parents to be practitioners. In this episode, Jamie, Mike, and Kevin discuss what practicing faith can look like, how to think through our role as parents and influencers, and how parents can find the resources and support necessary to engage in “faithing” with our kids.

It’s party time!! Kevin begins the episode with an update on the concerns he shared with a Southern Baptist Executive Committee member.

Then the team addresses some great questions from the current series on parenting. What do we do if we feel like we’ve already messed up? Should we force our kids to go to church if they don’t want to? If the family/home is supposed to be the main source of spiritual formation, then why do we even need children’s ministry or youth groups? Don’t they take kids out of the larger church family setting?

We also try to get Jamie to spill the beans about all the crazy things she did as a kid that her mom doesn’t know about, why we believe our friend, Seth is actually Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec, and why kids these days can’t play classic video games. All this and more in episode 59!

Welcome to the Afterparty! In this episode, Jamie, Mike, and Kevin talk about the importance of honesty in evaluating our motives for serving God and others. Why do some of us hide our selfish motives behind our faith and rather than dealing with them effectively, we just call them “struggles?” What are the results of not assessing unhealthy motives, unresolved personal issues, and unrealistic expectations? And why is it wrong to serve with a need to be needed?

Also, the gang discusses how important it is to honestly evaluate our skills and deficiencies in serving. Has God really called you to something you’re not good at? Why is mediocrity so often practiced and even defended by Christians, churches, and other organizations? How do you help someone improve?

But first, Jamie, Mike, and Kevin lament the painful parts of getting older, how the recent supermoon is causing insomnia, and why Mike dislikes female superheroes.

Does a concern for social justice compromise the Gospel? Does a Christian have to overlook or minimize systemic injustices in order to be committed to spreading the message of Jesus? The relationship between the Gospel and Social Justice is often a source of misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict, as evidenced by John MacArthur’s recent Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel. Jamie, Mike, and Kevin discuss the statement, and why a Biblical vision of justice and righteousness are actually one in the same.

These and other great questions, as well as some teaser info on the next sermon series on the book of Revelation!
