Nehemiah’s story is about so much more than just rebuilding a wall. In his opening message of the series, Kevin highlighted the risks Nehemiah would take as he responded to the critical needs of people he’d never met, in a place he’d never visited, and whose suffering was due to circumstances he didn’t cause. And yet, Nehemiah felt a profound sense of compassion, concern, and personal responsibility to help.
Jamie, Cera, and Kevin break down the qualities present in Nehemiah, and why those qualities are needed at a time when virtue-signaling and comfortable compartmentalization are valued over faithful risk and personal responsibility.

We do stay more on track this week, probably due to Cera being a part of the crew again. We get into Dennis's message from Sunday and discuss how we go about actually being aware of God's presence in our daily lives and how we aren't meant to compartmentalize our lives.
We discuss ideas like gratitude and how that plays into our daily efforts to live every part of our lives for Christ. Mike also struggles to remember a passage in the Bible that helps him make his point (It's Matthew 11, I looked it up afterward) and Kevin lets people in on one of the biggest secrets of the Afterparty - that Mike writes the descriptions for each episode!

It's the season of love! That's what we're told anyway.
As we weren't able to record a podcast last week, Jamie, Cera, Kevin, and Mike discuss the message about relationships from two weeks ago.
The conversation quickly goes into our thoughts on friendship, love, over-spiritualizing relationships, and making marriage, spouses, or even children, an idol. Is boldly saying "Merry Christmas" an effective way to spread the love of Christ? Kevin explains why "X-mas" is more Christian than you might think.
The conversation then turns to Mike's recent sermon on peace, in which he pointed out that Jesus doesn't necessarily bring the peace we might have expected, but instead he brings the kind of peace we need, even if we don't understand how or why.

We have a great conversation about inclusion and belonging in the church in general, but also how that specifically looks for people with disabilities, and how that also affects their family as a whole. Join Jamie, Kevin, and Mike as we recap some of the things we heard and ideas that we brought home with us from the Q Conference last week. Attending the Q Conference is like trying to drink out of a fire hose, and we bring a little bit of that home as we touch on a little bit of everything.
We discuss church discipline, sexuality & gender dysphoria, loneliness, and we even get to one of the hottest topics at Q, sex robots and the impact they'll have on marriages and people in general.

This week we have a special guest! Pastor Bill Eastwood joins Jamie, Kevin, and Mike to discuss Sunday's sermon and fasting in general. We discuss the practical ways to fast, why Calvary has decided to do this, and the way we interpret Jesus being tempted after fasting.
We also talk about El Paso Comic Con, Star Wars, and other nerdy topics.

Parents have an enormous influence on how kids conceptualize God and faith. How are they supposed to handle this responsibility? Some parents adopt a “do as I say, not as I do” posture, while others leave this job to “professionals” like pastors, priests, or other vocational ministers. Neither of these approaches is healthy because they do contain what kids really need for developing a faith that sticks. In reality, kids don’t need parents to be perfect, or to be professionals. They need parents to be practitioners. In this episode, Jamie, Mike, and Kevin discuss what practicing faith can look like, how to think through our role as parents and influencers, and how parents can find the resources and support necessary to engage in “faithing” with our kids.

It’s party time!! Kevin begins the episode with an update on the concerns he shared with a Southern Baptist Executive Committee member.
Then the team addresses some great questions from the current series on parenting. What do we do if we feel like we’ve already messed up? Should we force our kids to go to church if they don’t want to? If the family/home is supposed to be the main source of spiritual formation, then why do we even need children’s ministry or youth groups? Don’t they take kids out of the larger church family setting?
We also try to get Jamie to spill the beans about all the crazy things she did as a kid that her mom doesn’t know about, why we believe our friend, Seth is actually Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec, and why kids these days can’t play classic video games. All this and more in episode 59!
