There’s a lot of overlap between hackers and sex workers. The two demographics share obstacles regarding constant misrepresentation and the threat of reactionary government and prosecutorial overreach. Deviant Ollam, a renowned lock-pick in both the digital and physical realms, noticing these areas of shared threat and interest, began freely offering his expertise in physical and digital security basics training for sex workers.

In today's episode, Deviant and I talk about assessing one's personal "threat model", managing the delicate balances between freedom, safety and security, what kinds of crazy gadgets are out there to both compromise and assure your safety, and the perfect way to construct an impenetrable password.

Every year, tales of the great and fabled Super Bowl sex trafficking upswing make their rounds online. These rumors instill fear in the upstanding public, and infuse law enforcement and anti-trafficking organization with cash for intervention measures. But this myth has been long-debunked, so why does it remain in such heavy rotation? Join me in talking with Reason.com Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown about the origin of this moral panic, and check out the Super Bowl Sunday Sex Worker Bail Out Fund, coordinated by SWOP-Behind Bars' Alex Andrews, in partnership with LIPS Tampa.

This week I’m joined by Vanity Fair reporter May Jeong. May has an impressive, award-draped body of work that is soon to include a book about sex work. She came into my life due to her incredible loongform reporting on the Robert Kraft Case. Our conversation in this episode centers around her evolution as a writer, how she came to be on the sex work beat, and how her own experiences, many relevant to her identity as a woman of Korean descent have shaped her conception of journalistic ethics and tone in covering sensitive topics.

Part Nine of our December 17th - International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers series.

In August 2018 Donna Dalton-Castleberry was shot to death by a man pretending to be heading a prostitution sting. In an ironic twist, her killer was in fact a 30-year veteran of the Columbus, OH police department - one under investigation at the time for this exact scam.

Part Eight of our December 17th - International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers series.

On September 27th, 2015 a 42 year old working mother went out on a call to see a client. Maxine Showers of Liverpool, England left for work and never came home. Her murder alleged he'd punched her when she tried to rob him, and that she left of her own accord. But the coroner's report would tell a very different story.

Part Six of our December 17th - International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers series. Donna Marie Gentile (August 22, 1962- June 23,1985) was a street-based sex worker recruited as a police corruption informant. After she delivered testimony against several officers with the San Diego Police Department, she was found murdered. Her killer or killers have never been identified. Today Anita DeFrancesco, Donna's cousin and the author of The Donna Gentile Story: The Life and Murder of an Innocent Runaway, joins me to tell her story.

Kebreyana was a sex worker who served 7 years in federal prison for conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking. As a condition of her release she must report for probation for the next 25 years and will register as a sex offender for the rest of her life. We talk about how she ended up in prison, the unique obstacles that sex offenders (especially female sex offenders) face when trying to reintegrate into society and why the criminal justice system needs to approach sexually-classified offenses with less of a broad, punitive brush.

John is a man in his mid-30's who has only ever been with sex workers, and he has complicated feelings about it: on the one hand, keeping sexual intimacy transactional is much simpler for him - it takes a lot of the work out of people-ing, something that is especially draining for him because he has Aspberger Syndrome. On the other hand, the illegality of being a John has led him to some pretty dark and dangerous places. We talk about his first time, the mental health and trauma struggles that keep him from trying to establish more traditional relationships, and how criminalization makes getting one's needs met more dangerous and damaging for all parties involved.

Mistress Ashley Paige is a self-described Black Alpha Female, smut maker and Femme Daddy, and is described by me as a titilatingly terrifying Dominatrix, outstanding speaker and activist, and stone cold fox. I really enjoyed getting to know Paige better over the course of this conversation; she has an incredible story as a queer kid who started out doing street-based survival sex work, and who has dedicated her life and success to lifting up and bringing resources and opportunities to the people around her. Paige and I spoke from our respective quarantines about family dynamics, forgiveness, coming out and coming up, and why she's turning into the Robin Hood of women's wellness.  All In A Day's (Sex) Work is produced by Blair Hopkins and brought to you in part by SWOP-Behind Bars. The arc of Amy Taylor’s journey in the adult industry is wild: She started out as a broke student, achieved incredible success as an independent escort, fell victim to a high-profile industry predator who outed and stalked her before going to prison for attempting to hire someone to kill her, bravely returned to work and has since settled into what she considers to be a pre-retirement routine with some favorite regulars, with whom she’s weathering the world’s current obstacles. Amy’s clientele tends toward the upper crust. She has spent much of her 20 year career jet-setting with captains of industry. It was fascinating to talk with her about the nuances of her target demographics’ needs, as well as how she reconciles her sense of social responsibility with her professional responsibility to “keep sweet”.

Pandora's Box: Nicole Gilliland filed a Title IX lawsuit against Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) when it became clear she was being run out of the nursing program due to her previous career in porn. Since filing, SWOCC has fought back with the full force of their regional influence in Coos Bay, Oregon to discourage and discredit her. Gilliland was humiliated, exiled, driven to a suicide attempt, her children were taken from her and placed with abusive extended family members. She became homeless, was harassed by law enforcement and eventually had to flee for her life. Today Gilliland joins me to talk about her ongoing case against the school, how she and her family are recovering from their journey to hell-and-back these last two years and why she refuses to quit fighting.
