The Apostle Thomas is often called “Doubting Thomas,” due to his trouble believing the resurrection and his demand to see the risen Lord Jesus for himself. Perhaps “Honest Thomas” would be a better nickname. As Jesus speaks to His disciples about His upcoming departure and the preparations He will be making for them in the Father’s house, Thomas asks an honest question: “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” This honest question gets a straightforward answer that becomes the message we disciples share with all the world!

When the disciples see their risen Lord, they are overjoyed. He stands among them. He speaks to them. He sends them. Filled with His Spirit, they go out to bring forgiveness to all the world. There’s only one problem: Thomas, one of the Twelve, wasn’t with the others when they first saw the risen Jesus. Thomas demands to see and touch Jesus for himself before he will believe. Jesus graciously accommodates Thomas’ demands and appears again, on the Sunday after Easter. “Stop doubting and believe,” He says. Thomas sees. Thomas touches. Thomas believes. And he confesses, “My Lord and my God!” As Jesus blesses us with His presence in Word and Sacrament, may we do the same.

Everything that the Apostle John has heard and seen throughout this Revelation is trustworthy and true. We receive God’s Word in the same way. And what is the fitting response to the glorious vision of Jesus that we’ve been given? It’s twofold. First, we fall at His feet and worship Him. Secondly, we “open the scroll” and witness to others of what Christ has done, is doing, and will bring to completion on the Day He comes again. Not once, not twice, but three times, Jesus says in Revelation 22, “I am coming soon!” And to that glorious promise we join with the Church of every time and every place in saying, “Amen! The angels pictured in Revelation 14:6-13 reveal the mission of the church. Following the lead of the heavenly messenger who bears the "eternal gospel," Christ-followers are called to extend Jesus' personal invitation for all to repent of sin and believe the good news. Through the good news of Christ's life, death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit is working to change people's hearts and lives. What a gift it is to be part of Christ's own mission to share His "eternal gospel" with the world.
