Christianity is not magic, whilst miracles happen, it's through our journey with Christ, his transforming Word and the power of the Spirit that we are renewed. Today we look at the role of giving thanks in gaining peace. For more about Christ Central Church Portsmouth visit: https://christcentral.churchOr via socials:www.facebook.com/christcentral.chwww.instagram.com/christcentralchurchportsmouthTo connect with us email: hello@christcentral.church or give us your details at www.christcentral.church/connect

There is a cost to discipleship, a price for following Jesus. But we must be those that accept that, we must walk with him and (like Paul) “cast off all that would hinder” in our pursuit of Jesus. He is the centre of our lives, the ‘pearl of great price’ and one who has become more valuable and wonderful than anything else. There is a cost, but as we look to him, we see that he is worth it all.

This inspiring message reminds us that we can trust Him with our own messy lives, finding healing, restoration, and hope through His presence. Perfect for the Christmas season, this message offers timeless encouragement for all.

It is a daunting task. The promise they had, and the one we share is that there will be trouble, suffering, pain and rejection for those that share the gospel. Here, Jesus says that they are like “sheep among wolves”. But there is a wonderful promise to those who endure; and inheritance that awaits for the faithful and a reward to those who accept the call and go boldly. We are weak, but he is strong.

We have been given a serious call. We have been sent out, but more than that, we have been ‘commissioned’. Sent out and empowered by Jesus to the work he has laid out before us. Jesus sends the 12, in turn the church is sent, as the people of God, commissioned with the same call. “Freely you received, freely give”.For more about Christ Central Church Portsmouth visit: https://christcentral.churchOr via socials:www.facebook.com/christcentral.chwww.instagram.com/christcentralchurchportsmouthTo connect with us email: hello@christcentral.church or give us your details at www.christcentral.church/connect

Jesus has compassion on the crowds; He sees them. Matthew calls them distressed and dejected, like lost sheep without a shepherd. Then He tells his disciples that there is a harvest out there, people who needto be reached with the gospel. We now share in that calling, to go out into the harvest fields and share the good news of what Jesus has done with similar grace and compassion for those unreached. Jesus had been preaching and healing, now He gives that authority to the twelve to go and do the same.

As a blind man and a demon possessed, mute man are brought to Jesus we see Him heal once again. Here, the faith of the blind man is commended. But is it the amount of faith that is important or the object of that faith? Remember, “faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains” (Matthew 17: 20). Where is our faith? What are wetrusting in as the thing that will bring us hope, joy and fulfilment? Is it Jesus?

An amazing sign of the coming Kingdom is that as Jesus moves and touches people they are healed. Here, even death is not too much for Jesus. Both a girl who has died before He reaches her and a woman bleeding for 12 years need only encounter Him, and feel the touch of His hand to be restored and healed. Do we expect to see that today? No one is too far gone, or too sick for Jesus to make them well; but He does a deeper work, a healing of the soul and restoring to the Father.

Jesus’ disciples are questioned about fasting, and why at the moment they don’t fast. Jesus tells them of the new wine and the new wine skin. God is bringing about change, the new Kingdom is coming! God is moving, restoring, and creating. There is a new wine skin coming, that will fulfil the old and new wine that will fill it.

Jesus comes back to the other side of the shore, and a paralysed man is brought to Him. Seeing his immediate need is easy, he’s paralysed; but Jesus sees deeper. Jesus sees that what he needs is to have his sins forgiven. We are all like that, in need of Jesus; some needs more obvious than others, but what we really need is to know the forgiveness of God and the grace of Jesus. The gospel is good news, that we can come to Jesus as we are, be changed by Him and know the presence of God.For more about Christ Central Church Portsmouth visit: https://christcentral.churchOr via socials:www.facebook.com/christcentral.chwww.instagram.com/christcentralchurchportsmouthTo connect with us email: hello@christcentral.church or give us your details at www.christcentral.church/connect

Jesus calms a raging storm, then he goes and drives out demons from two men on the shore. Both instances show the control that he has over what cannot be controlled by human hands. No matter how hard we try, we cannot effect the weather, we can’t make the sun shine, the rain stop or the wind relent, but he can. We can’t bring freedom for a possessed mind, but he can. He calms the storm and drives out the demons, the natural and the supernatural are under his control.

This week we took a “gift day” during our morning together. God calls us to be ‘joyful givers’ and to steward our money wisely, in a God honouring, Jesus centred way. If you would like to respond to what you have heard today please visit www.christcentral.church/response We do not give to receive an “extra blessing”, more grace, or for God to reward us; we are saved by grace- there is nothing you can do to make Him love you more or less, BUT we worship him with everything we have. Here we see Matthew describe three encounters with Jesus straight after the Sermon on the Mount. The first with a leper, the second a Roman Centurion, and finally Peter’s mother-in-law. Jesus demonstrates his authority with each encounter. He shows his graceand compassion for people by meeting them where they are, in their desperate situations, and shows them mercy. Today he is the same; he meets us where we are, wherever that is and draws close.

We see them throughout the journey of scripture, with this one we see God give and confirm the law. If they can follow His commands, He will be their God and be with them.

Sometimes we can be full of zeal for the things of God, and then, there are times where things are hard and our enthusiasm and zeal wavers. Laodicea has wavered in its zeal. They are neither hot nor cold, they have no use! Harsh words, and then Jesus tells them that they will be ‘vomited out of His mouth’. How do we stay resolute in our commitment to the gospel and to what we are called to do for Jesus?

The Christian message is one filled with grace. The Bible recounts many stories where God shows grace to His people. Over the Summer, we will take a look at some of these stories of grace - and how they can encourage us today.

We love Old and New Testament; histories, Law, poetic writing, and the Prophets. That’s where we find the book of Micah, the Prophets. Those who were charged with bringing God’s message to God’s people. This term we will journey through the message of Micah’s prophesy to the people of God, and hear what God was saying to them at that time. The books of the Prophets speak to the nation and the people to whom they were shared, but they also point ahead, to the coming of Jesus, to the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets.

So how does Micah reveal Jesus to us? What does he point to and how does he reveal the Son of God to the church today? We want to be taught, challenged, corrected and equipped by the whole of God’s Word. We want to see the context of how God has spoken to his people in the past, and how he speaks to us today.

Our Companion Guide, with some further reading and details about the coming term at Christ Central is available at: https://christcentral.church/cg_micah We also have supporting study materials - with Bible readings, study questions, and prayer points - at: https://christcentral.church/lg_micah Our kidswork team work together with the teaching plan to provide resources and materials for the under-18s to engage with the same topics and message. https://christcentral.church/kg_micah

He is an incredibly gifted Bible teacher, pastor, author, and God has used him significantly in the Newfrontiers network through his prophetic gift. In these closing chapters of John’s gospel we are going to look at the final days of the life of Jesus. How does he respond to being betrayed by those closest to him? How does he handle himself in moments of pain, mockery, and torture? How does he approach the cross? And what do his disciples do in response to seeing his resurrected and eating with them again before he ascends to heaven? There is so much drama in the last hours of Jesus’ life; and so much that we can learn about how Jesus treats others in these moments. John’s gospel continues to reveal the heart of God for his people, right to the end.To accompany our Sermon Series, we have produced weekly guides to help you, and provide further study resources. What does your Christian walk look like on a Sunday morning? Do you lose yourself in worship, sit and enjoy the Word of God and respond in prayer, adoration, and the building up of others? What does your Monday morning look like? ...or your Tuesday? ...or your Saturday night? So often there is a disconnect between what is seen of us on a Sunday and what the world sees during the rest of the week.Or, is your Sunday morning spent listening to the Word, but struggling to fully believe it? To fully live it out. Do you hear the songs sung in worship, but is there something stopping you from giving everything to God in prayer and praise? We need wisdom. But not just any wisdom, heavenly wisdom. The wisdom that comes from our Heavenly Father; given to us so we would fully know the truth of who He is, and equip us to live lives transformed by the Gospel.James writes so that we would have wisdom to live.To accompany our Sermon Series, we have produced weekly guides to help you, and provide further study resources. How Jesus comes to us and wants us to come to Him.

We enjoyed supporting the Great South Run, cheering on 2,500 runners as they raced past the John Pounds Centre. We had some conversations with people gathered, and walking past Queen Street, providing tea and coffee, and music - what a fun time!

Sunday Evening we gathered at the Forge, our Sunday Evening gathering at Treadgolds on Bishops Street. Adam encouraged us, looking at John 6, to come to Jesus - the True Bread of Heaven.

Luke’s Gospel repeatedly mentions meals Jesus had with all kinds of people in different circumstances - more than the other gospels, but none of these meals were incidental. In Luke's Gospel, he’s either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal. These meals with tax collectors or with Pharisees were visible demonstrations of what his Kingdom is like.

All of this is a foretaste of the future meal we’re made for (Isaiah 25:6-8), and every meal Jesus ate with people was him acting out his invitation to this great feast to come. We can’t cover every meal in five weeks, but we’re picking up five to get a flavour!

Christ Central Church gathers in person at the John Pounds Centre, PO1 3HN every week at 10:30AM and live streams here. All are welcome!

Where does the struggle begin, if not in the human heart? There is a desire in all of us to be the master of our own destinies, captains of our own ships, holders of our own remote controls. It is the human condition to try to seize and grasp control in a belief that we hold the key to our own flourishing.

The Bible is a unified story that reveals the origin of our restless condition and tells us of the answer that brings true peace - not only to the world, but to the human heart. This is the good news - that there is one Kingdom to rule them all.

To accompany our Sermon Series, we have produced weekly guides to help you, and provide further study resources. You can find this week's guide, along with previous weeks on our website: https://christcentral.church/cg_kk.

Today we continue our sermon series in 1 Corinthians. This term, as we start our new journey together, we want to focus on what Paul says to the church in the book of 1 Corinthians. This letter covers a lot of ground on what it means to live worshipful lives that honour Christ and it’s going to be a challenge to cover it all in 12 weeks.

We have produced a Companion Guide to accompany our sermon series. You can access this at https://christcentral.church/cg_1cor. If you would like to receive a copy of the guide, please contact the Church Office (info@christcentral.church)

Join us as we pray for peace in Ukraine and stand together with our sister churches in both Russia and Ukraine. With a break in our 1 Corinthians series we'll be looking at the loving kindness of God. Is that a paradox? Come along to find out.

We start our new year together today. Rather than setting resolutions, plans and promises, today we look at the posture needed for all that 2022 may bring. We need to take a posture of standing firm in the truth, committing to follow the way of Christ as an act of beautiful resistance against the world, the flesh and the devil. John 8:32 - 'You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.'

Unfortunately our recording has missed the introduction and the reading of todays main passage (Mark 8:22-30). Here is a brief summary of what is missed.

H.G. Wells, a self-confessed atheist, said ‘Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history'. Christmas, Easter, even 2016AD is based around this man, but why is He so important?

Tim looks at Mark's record, and asks 3 questions…

1) Do you see anything? 2) Who do people say that I am? 3) Who do you say that I am?

Tim introduces the Romans Series. Considered the 'Greatest Letter Ever Written' this book has so much to offer.

View Details

Dan takes a look at the Grace of God. Discussing the common ways that we can treat grace and misunderstand it, Dan highlights what the Bible says about grace and it's transforming powering our lives.

View Details

The news that Jesus is Lord and not just our Saviour is good news of great joy for all.

View Details

Steve looks at Matthew 2:1-12 and our response to the message the Magi heard.

View Details

Adam looks at what love really looks like in the church. Main text Romans 12:9-13

View Details

A church that prays recognises both her dependency upon God and His ability to break into any and every situation. We are committed to praying for those who suffer in body and spirit, for those who are persecuted and for a nation to turn to King Jesus.

View Details

Jesus has called us to go into the world and make disciples through teaching His word and calling all to follow and obey Him. We do not want to be a church that simply aims to gather a crowd, rather we hope to call people to Christ-like living which will include risk taking, sin killing and character forming.

View Details

Paul taught the church is the body of Christ, where each Christian is a member and has a vital and unique contribution to make. We aspire to be a church that is made up of many different people whose backgrounds, gifts, and character all contribute to the building up of the church community, thus reflecting the very nature of our God to the world around us. Our sense of unity and oneness is a core manifestation of the inner-work of the gospel compelling those outside the church to sense God’s real presence among us.

View Details

Jesus modelled servant leadership to His disciples, preferring the interests of others above His own, and we seek to emulate His example. How we use our time and money as Christians and as a church reveals more than any other aspect the condition of our hearts and what we treasure most.

View Details

We are called on an apostolic adventure, sent by Jesus into all nations of the world. Working closely but not exclusively with other churches in Commission and Newfrontiers we desire to be a ‘sent’ church – sharing the gifts God has given us with regions beyond our locality.

View Details

We are called as a church to be a blessing to the places where we live, learn and work. We are called to ‘love Portsmouth’ and see her prosper. We cannot turn a blind eye to the poor, lonely, abused and marginalised of our society. Through the means that God has provided us with, we aim to serve our city and love those who live here.

View Details

Aaron looks at the Israelites response to the Word of God and considers what our response should be to what God has said to us. Aaron shared this message at our Evening Service.

View Details

The life of every Christian and church must be empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been sent by Jesus to help us grow in fruitfulness (Galatians 5) and flourish in giftedness (1 Corinthians 12) for the edification of the church and sanctification of every saint. He has made it possible for all who believe in Him to be baptised with His Holy Spirit not simply as a one off event but as a constant on-going reality.

View Details

Understanding the Bible to be God’s inerrant (without error), authoritative and inspired word protects us from being ‘carried about by every wind of doctrine’. We are committed to allowing God’s word to shape our lives, teaching and ministry.

View Details

The critical message we have to bring is the Good News of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. A church that is gospel-centred will call sinners to faith in Jesus Christ, resulting in repentance from sin and baptism into Christ in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

View Details

There is none more worthy, more beautiful, more able to satisfy the longings of our hearts than our God – there can be no room for false idols when adoring Him consumes us.

Steve Petch (from Grace church, Chicester) joins us to talk about Christian Stewardship and how this affects our giving.
