We must understand love; we must be able to teach it, to create it, to predict it, or else the world is lost to hostility and to suspicion.

The hostile multitudes are vast as space –
What chance is there that all should be subdued?
Let but this angry mind be overthrown
And every foe is then and there destroyed.

On the other hand, a person sitting quiet and contemplating, with no purpose or aim except that of experiencing themselves and their oneness with the world, is considered to be “passive,” because they are not “doing” anything. In reality, this attitude of concentrated meditation is the highest activity there is, an activity of the soul, which is possible only under the condition of inner freedom and independence

Humanity is an onion made up of a hundred integuments, a texture made up of many threads. The ancient Asiatics knew this well enough, and in the Buddhist Yoga an exact technique was devised for unmasking the illusion of the personality. The human merry-go-round sees many changes: the illusion that cost India the efforts of thousands of years to unmask is the same illusion that the West has labored just as hard to maintain and strengthen.
Hermann Hesse, Steppenwolf
"They are calm and uninvolved, yet take action in just the way that is best for any given situation. With their hands on the pulse of nature, they are compassionate and understanding, compliant and gentle, helpful and upright. They seem to do the most outstanding feats with ease and no particular effort, fully in control of themselves, yet charming in their compliance with others."

I open this season on the topic of Zen. The essence of Buddhism is the connection between the liberation of individuals and the liberation of a society. Human society is reflected by the psychological freedom it has.
I will read excerpts from Thomas Cleary's afterward of Zen Essence; The Science of Freedom where he shares his contemplation on the mind, zen, and the welfare of the public.

On this episode I will read one of my favourite chapters from a translation of the Secret of the Golden Flower by Thomas Cleary. This powerful meditation was written down over 200 years ago during a time of political upheaval to provide the common person a path to inner peace and liberation. This meditation has been brought back during times of crisis because of how quickly this meditation can unearth the hidden powers of the mind.

Narrating the ancient Chinese classic, The Fisherman and the Woodcutter. Translated by a favourite of mine, Thomas Cleary.
A fisherman said to a woodcutter, “When the world is on the verge of order, people invariably value conduct; when the world is on the verge of chaos, people invariably value talk. When people value conduct, then the trend of the times is to sincerity and genuineness; when people value talk, then the trend of the times is to falsehood and deception. When the world is on the verge of chaos, people value profit. When they value justice, the trend of the times is to be deferential; when they value profit, the trend of the times is to be predatory."
