Ginny Tonic and Charlie are passionate about exploring the unexpected and delightful world of alcohol. They want to take you with them on their journey to understand, create, mix, and drink everything this world has to offer. Every episode of The Charlie Tonic Hour will bring you closer to the people, places, history, culture, and science that created the drinks we all know and love. Through their discussion, interviews, recipes, and reviews the podcast will never fail to educate and inspire.
The Charlie Tonic Hour podcast started almost seven years ago, in January 2012. Since then we have recorded 349 episodes with countless guests. We have grown and evolved from an “alcohol-infused culture podcast” to an all alcohol focused show. But now the time has come for Ginny Tonic and Charlie to evolve in a different direction. This episode, number 350 of Charlie Tonic Hour, will be the last. We invite you to join us and enjoy one last Ginny and Charlie cheers. It has been a beautiful ride and now you can hear how it all draws to a close.

After the chat, Ginny and Charlie share a couple event recommendations and call it a show of shows once again!

For the drinks segment Ginny makes two cocktails using the Botany Bay Smoked Sea Salt that they picked up in Charleston.

We talk about a tiki night, Foxy Shazam, Dashbar, a new cocktail forum, the Adventure Zone, tequilafest and cabin life before we even jump into the heart of the episode this week. From there we look at cocktail conventions and ponder if they are accessible to non-industry individuals. We wrap it up with a new bar tool review and recommendations for the events in the area you will not want to miss. We even include a new podcast recommendation just to add to the fun. As always, another Charlie Tonic Hour is hear for you to enjoy!
Ginny Tonic and Charlie open this one with a look back on the wild run of events that made up the last two weeks criss-crossing the city and sampling everything from HyRyDer to the Reds to a party at Casa De Tonic. After that, they settle in for a new feature within the show focusing on influential bartenders in the area. For their first choice, they sit down for an extended interview with Mike Stankovich, the owner and main man behind the bar at Longfellow located at 1233 Clay Street here in Cincinnati. After that chat is wrapped, they serve up four recommendations of things happening for the area and send you on your way for another two weeks.

Sharing an audio reminder regarding the recent broadcast schedule updates for the show.
Ginny Tonic and Charlie started this podcast just talking to each other each week back in January of 2012. For almost six and a half years, they managed to never miss a Wednesday producing at least one podcast every week. No matter what life tossed our way, the show ALWAYS went on. Today, for the first time in 334 episodes, they've made the choice to break that trend and not air a new episode. Of course, the show will go on but it will shift to a bi-weekly format as it goes forward. That means half as much Ginny and Charlie but they promise to make the shows twice as good to make up for it.
To help further ease our load, Bottoms Up will fold back into the main show and cease its life as a secondary podcast following last week's episode #100. Also, sadly, Ginny Tonic has made the decision to let the Remeasured Life podcast end after one season so that she can focus all her effort into the main Charlie Tonic Hour podcast.
Why the change? Ginny and Charlie have both taken on significant, new careers over the last few months and they always promised ourselves that the show should be fun above all else. They've said since day one that if it became something they had to push to achieve, they would make adjustments to make it work. Life has forced their hand a bit so they're slowing the pace and keeping themselves centered in the fun.
The next episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour will air on May 30th, 2018 with a new episode arriving every 14 days thereafter.
Over on the main show, Ginny Tonic and Charlie discuss the new book Texas Cocktails by Nico Martini. Texas Cocktails covers recipes, history, interviews and personal thoughts on everything to do with cocktails in Texas. Here on Bottoms Up, they make a cocktail called “The Only Word,” a Texas take the Last Word cocktail. A fitting final drink as the Bottoms Up podcast folds back into the main show after this week's installment and 100th episode!
On this week's Charlie Tonic Hour, Ginny and Charlie announce that they will being going to a bi-weekly format for the show going forward. That means half as much Ginny and Charlie but we promise to make the shows twice as good to make up for it.

Texas Cocktails covers recipes, history, interviews and personal thoughts on everything to do with cocktails in Texas. Once the book is covered, they make a cocktail called "The Only Word," a Texas take the Last Word cocktail. All this and more as a new Charlie Tonic Hour is unveiled!

In an all new show this week Ginny and Charlie recap the last two weeks in their crazy mixed-up life, including a Cinco de Mayo tequila tasting with Cantera Negra, a quick stop by Service Bar at Middle West Spirits, and finally getting to see Avengers Infinity War, but even more exciting, Geostorm. Then they discuss the recent Punch article, Why Can't Hollywood Get Drinking Right? Did movies really depict drinking better back in the good old days? Finally they end by trying two spirits from Graton Distilling Company, Redwood Empire Whiskey and D George Benhem's Gin. These two products are new to Ohio and you need to try them soon!
This week for Bottoms Up you can sit in on a cocktail class lead by Ginny Tonic. The audio was recorded at Artichoke cook ware store in Cincinnati Ohio. The theme of the class was Cinco de Derby and this is the section of the class where she makes a classic margarita.
Back in January of 2014 during episode #108 we took you on location for and interview with Columbus, Ohio’s very own Middle West Spirits. During that interview we chat with co-founder Brady Konya. We're thrilled to share it once again this week. Here, what starts as a basic tasting grows into a knowledge lesson in spirits and what makes OYO not just regionally loved but artisanal at it’s core. This is a company putting out some amazing product, the earliest hint of Ginny’s own career to come and by the end this conversation you’ll understand why we love Middle West.

You will learn all this and more as Ginny and Charlie walk down the path of Grappa madness and have too much fun tasting their way through it all with Peter.
It's a story Charlie has told previously on the show, but we've resurrected the tale of the Prairie Fire as we find ourself led to build it with moonshine. To say the least, this is a shot that didn't go well.
This week we catch you up on life, spend some time in Columbus, tell a few stories and start with a discussion on manly drinks. That ultimately evolves into a consideration of how your want to see yourself when drinking at a bar. From there we revisit the prairie fire shot (this time with moonshine) and find out what an utter disaster that can be (and audio you will enjoy). Recommendations and we're out once again with a new Charlie Tonic Hour ready for you to enjoy.
This week on Bottoms Up we flash back to 2017 and a LIVE recording at the Overlook Lodge! We were joined by Bret Kollmann Baker and Joshua Elliott of Urban Artifact as we discussed their beer, their philosophy and uncovered the story of this unique Cincinnati brewery and taproom. It’s quite a tale with some great beer knowledge shared as we go.
Ever wanted a career in the alcohol industry? This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie share with you the panel they presented at the San Antonio Cocktail Conference which targets this very topic.
Here's the original writeup for their presentation:
Above the Bar: Careers for Booze Hounds that Don't Involve Bartending
Bartending is a great and fairly easy way to start a career in the alcohol industry, but what if you don't want to work until 3:00 am the rest of your life? Ginny and Charlie will share their non-traditional path to careers in the bar and booze world and explore other roads. They will offer advice and strategies for starting you down the path that will get you out from behind the stick, while still having a great time and growing your career in an industry you love.
Enjoy and we'll be back again next week!

Ginny Tonic and Charlie are fans and this Bottoms Up in two acts takes you through the history and initial products produced by the distillery.
Last week Ginny Tonic shared some detail on the Bourbon Classic and hinted at a MASSIVE podcast gathering which took place there. This week, we're bringing you that discussion start to finish! The conversation this year featured representatives of ModernThirst, StraightUp615, Bourbon & Banter, Sips Suds & Smokes, Four Roses and, of course, the Charlie Tonic Hour. Taking place on location at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts before Saturday’s events got underway, this amazing lineup discussed their adventures exploring a cooperage and several distilleries, sampled a 45 year old bourbon, then discussed the Bourbon Classic and the broader bourbon industry as it stands in 2018.
For this week's Bottoms Up, we try two single barrel bottles of bourbon hailing from two different distilleries (New Riff and Belle Meade), but both started life as sourced bourbon from MGP.

Of course there are spirits sampled, stories told and so much more as another Charlie Tonic Hour rumbles your way.
We jump back to a special moment in our Charlie Tonic / Bottoms Up history. In episode #14 of this very show, we sat down with a brewery that was just beginning to make a real name for itself in the city; MadTree Brewing. They were 18 months into their life as a company back in 2013 and this interview provided an amazing glimpse at three guys who stood just on the verge of something incredible. As we wrote in the show notes at the time...
"A local brewery that makes some great beer is one thing. A local brewery that makes some great beer AND has a taproom that feels like an extension of your backyard, where you can hang out, play corn hole, and get some great food from the food truck parked outside is another. MadTree Brewing has been selling beer for less than 18 months and they have managed to achieve both of these things. This week Ginny and Charlie sit down with the three owners of MadTree to talk beer, business, and how to win over investors. You won’t want to miss it!"
As they recently celebrate their five year anniversary, we thought it was a perfect time to invite you to the bar for a re-listen of this conversation!
Have you ever wanted to sit in a room and listen while a bourbon expert asks ten different master distillers questions about everything to do with the bourbon industry? What if those distillers included Harlen Wheatley (Buffalo Trace), Tom Bulleit (Bulleit Bourbon), Fred Noe (Jim Beam), Daniel Preston (Cacao Prieto Artisan Distillery), Colin Spoelman (King’s County Distillery), Willie Pratt (Michter’s), Dave Schmier (Redemption Bourbon), Drew Kulsveen (Willett) and Jimmy Russell (Wild Turkey) on that panel of 10?
Four years ago, Ginny Tonic and Charlie were lucky enough to have that chance at that year’s Louisville Bourbon Classic and this week we flash back to that presentation, hosted by Fred Minnick, giving it another listen. We re-share this in celebration of the Bourbon Classic taking place in Louisville, February 28th – March 3rd, 2018!
What actually makes a rum & coke into a Cuba Libra? What is the history behind this drink? How does it play into Charlie's own history? Listen and learn as your short shot of alcohol comes served with lime this week!
As much as we here at the Charlie Tonic Hour are advocates of drinking and drinking culture, there comes a time when you simply have to reflect on what's fun, what's healthy and what deserves a bit of moderation. This is where "drinking deliberately" comes into play. Catch our thoughts on this topic, storytelling from the week that was, how craft beer may be healthier than red wine, what actually makes a rum & coke into a Cuba Libra, what not to order while traveling abroad and so much more. Of course there are recommendation at the end (something like five in total) and more audio goodness to be had. It's all in this week's Charlie Tonic Hour!

You know, those alcoholic beverages made from distilled spirits that are often flavored with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers or nuts and sweetened when bottled. In this week's Bottoms Up they jump into two cocktails (one of which was NOT featured in the main show) and enjoy an episode of tasting liqueurs!

In the full podcast episode (#318 of the Charlie Tonic Hour available at CharlieTonic.com), Charlie interviews their distiller. Here, in this week's Bottom's Up, he and Ginny Tonic retry their gin and experience their bourbon. How does it all hold up? What do they think? How will this story continue? Listen and learn!

Nico Martini comes from a theatre background, as an actor/director. He was a member of the 2005 Lincoln Center Director’s Lab and is the proud owner of an Excellence in Directing award from the Kennedy Center. During the interview they mixed Ginny and Charlie up a drink and told them all about it.

Then in the drinks segment they review two affordably priced bottles, Old Forester and Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond.

Ginny Tonic and Charlie had a busy week full of Halloween, the second anniversary of The Overlook Lodge, Around the Kitchen, Good Spirits, and lots of fun with friends. But after all that fun with friends, they decided to take a break by discussing how to drink at a bar alone. What to order, where to sit, and who to talk to in order to get through an evening out by yourself. Then they explore Old Tom Gin and make the classic cocktail, The Martinez.
Ginny Tonic talks with PJ Neumann. PJ is the proprietor of Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey in Cincinnati Ohio and he talks frankly about his big life changes. His journey took him from opioid addiction, to recovery and college, working in the financial industry, and finally back into the restaurant and bar industry he loves, this time as an owner.
Mike Bowling is back for Bottoms Up this week as we try a series of bartender handshakes live on the show. Handshakes sampled include Ferrari (half Fernet Branca and half Campari), Jameson, Miller High Life and Ten Cane Rum. If you want to know more about the nature and origins of bartender handshakes, check out episode #306 of the Charlie Tonic Hour.
Mike Bowling takes center stage for our first BONUS as he shares a rebuttal to our recent discussion of craft beer taxation. Our conversation happened on episode #305 while he was with us as a guest on episode #306. We cover the issue and so much more!
This is our first ever Charlie Tonic Hour BONUS EPISODE! The idea here is to share a bit of extra conversation as it happens. It tends to take shape when a guest covers a topic that may not fit the show they were part of, but turns out to be incredibly interesting none the less.
This week we kick things off with SO MANY stories. From salsa dancing to yuletide nightmares, there's a lot to cover. After that Mike Bowling joins us once again. You may remember him from episode #302 where we covered arcade bars. This time he provides a bit of industry perspective as we discuss bartender handshakes. These are those little insider drinks that bartenders share when they meet. First we delve into the concept then we line up a mix of them and work our way through a tasting. All this plus a couple event recommendations round out the week!
Do you know why spirits (as in ghosts) and spirits (as in alcohol) share the same word in common? Interested in upping your Halloween cocktail game a bit this year? Ginny and Charlie are here with some history, some etymology and some cocktail evolution. Featuring one found cocktail and one original, we're here to kick off your weekend with another short shot of alcohol.
Ginny and Charlie may have had a quiet weekend but that doesn’t stop them from having a jam packed show. They talk about a proposed tax reduction for craft breweries and if the booming craft beer industry really needs a tax break. Then they get in the spirit of Halloween by mixing up a classy and entertaining color changing cocktail AND looking at the very nature of spirits and how we came to use that term. All this plus some recommendations for the week before they're done.

After working through over 50 gins in two days, they went over to The Nashville Whiskey Festival. The show inspired them to talk about the benefits and surprises of blind tasting. For Bottoms up they take a closer look at Woody Creek’s Colorado Gin.
As we do a week of sustainability inspired podcasts (see Charlie Tonic #303 for more), we search through our own kitchen to see what we can find for a cocktail. From there, the Plum Dang It takes shape.
The Plum Dang It
2 oz. rum
half oz. brown sugar syrup
2 slices plum
2 slices lime
Muddle the plum and lime in a mixing glass with the syrup.
Add the rum and ice and stir until chilled.
Strain into a coupe and garnish.
Full credit to Imbibe for this cocktail!

We may not have all the answers, but we do have a few ideas and even look into the financial side of things before we're done. Next, trying our best to practice what we're sharing, we look around our own home to make a sustainable cocktail (which turns out to be staggeringly good). Along the way we have a lot of announcements and recommendations, not the least of which being that we are now a syndicated radio show!

All in a days Tonic so join us!
We kick off the show with stories from hocking hills, hot tubs, a bit of gambling and a cocktail contest. From there we are joined by two friends, Greg and Cindy, who have been show regulars over the years and discuss restarting lives (with a bit of rum on the side). Next, we sit down with a very interesting beer and ramble on in many conversational directions. It only gets more far reaching as we turn to a bit of music from Jidenna that's been on Charlie's mind this week. It's a longer episode, but when a conversation with friends gets interesting, you really don't want to turn off the mics do you?

Trust us, it's true.
Sure, we catch up on all the latest events (and a few films we're very late discussing), but the centerpiece of the show is our reaction to the very sad news that Blank Slate Brewing has closed its doors. It is a shorter show this week but we think you will enjoy it all the same. Cheers!

Some of the best beer you can try is beer a given by a friend and that is the case for this week’s brew. Decapitated Dan of the Monsters and Metal podcast shared booth duties with Ginny Tonic and I at C2E2 (the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) and brought us a the beer we’re trying on the show this week… Lagunitas Brewing Company’s Hop Stoopid!
It's an annual tradition here at the Charlie Tonic Hour! Each year, Ginny and Charlie travel to Chicago for C2E2, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, and bring you back three creator interviews. Traditionally one individual creates webcomics, one is a sequential storyteller and one is focused on art. Join us this week as those three interviews take center stage, the hosts discuss the show and sample a beer that anchored the event. All this and more as the Charlie Tonic Hour returns!
We’re excited to return to a discussion of the Ohio based Watershed Distillery. We love their gin and this week we’re curling up with their bourbon for a tasting and a cocktail. Join us for all the details!
There are a few topics that Ginny and Charlie have promised to discuss for some time. One of those was a frank and honest discussion of male lingerie. As soon as the subject came up on a previous episode the ever amazing blogger and podcaster The Uncommon Geek (aka Troy) wanted to be on the show. He and Ms Uncommon Geek (aka Alisha) are live for the over 30 minute discussion that followed. Add to that tales of a great weekend, a very solid spring cocktail and some unexpectedly solid new music and you have a podcast. Cheers!
The Uncommon Geek’s (Mr. and Ms. … www.uncommongeek.com) join us for this week’s Bottoms Up as we sample a little Firefly Amber. You can have the sky, but your not taking this beer from me. Catch some beer discussion, a bit of Jackie O’s storytelling and more. Your short shot of alcohol is ready!

After that we visit a bourbon whiskey that resonates in unexpected ways and get you back to your life with a smile on your face and a spring in your step all in under an hour.
This week we flash back and visit Alpha Brewing Company. Alpha hit St. Louis in the spring last year in what appeared to be a thriving St. Louis craft beer scene. They have a few standard brews but heavily rotate their tap list experimenting with some solid tastes. Ginny and Charlie were NOT disappointed by their brews in the least. Quite tasty as these two try all but one that was bottled rather than on tap. Your short shot of alcohol to kick off your weekend even includes an interview this week!
Rarely does a brew take center stage on the Charlie Tonic Hour, but this week that is the case. That said, the brew in question, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew. is not the entire story. In fact it leads to a chat about the reality television series Brew Masters, the nature of reality television and a bit of a side walk into Miles Davis' album Bitches Brew (for which the beer was crafted to celebrate). It's all related, it's all Tonic and it's all here for you to enjoy!
Ginny and Charlie love it when friends bring them beer and this week it’s a homebrew that stands out as a winner. Matt and Nancy share a Triple Belgium mixed with an IPA that went over well. Even better, Ginny sits down with these two over at the Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar so they can share even more of the story!
Charlie and Ginny are back with a new show this week as they discussed the finale of the long running How I Met Your Mother television series. Charlie adds a recommendation for a new show he's been watching then the conversation turns on a dime to porn. Specially, Vivid's porn parodies of pop culture and comic book movies. He's been getting some interesting press releases lately and he wants to share a few stories. The two close with a solid drinks segment and some unexpected music. Another Charlie Tonic Hour awaits your approval!

Charlie and Ginny have been logging a lot of miles these last few weeks but that doesn't slow the show. Sure, they may be recording from a car at 70+ MPH, but a podcast is still the result. The tiki theme continues with a drink segment (that happens off the road) and this week's music choice start Giny thinking. All this and more as we check in from the highways to our north!

Both brews were not tried before the show was recorded, but both come out winners this week!
Storytelling is something Ginny and Charlie love and when it’s done well it should be considered a classic. Such was the case in the panel we’re presenting this week from the Louisville Bourbon Classic. Titled "Bourbon Recollections...A Trip Through Time”, host Jeff McKenzie and moderator Charles K. Cowdery lead Fred Noe (Jim Beam), Fred Johnson (Buffalo Trace) and Jimmy Russell (Wild Turkey) as they look back a mix of stories from their long history as distillers. Whether your are a bourbon fan or not, this is a very fun hour filled with interesting history. Grab a glass of your favoriate drink and join us for the trip.

Next they discuss a list of 6 Party Hacks and along the way reveal some of their own memorable party experiences, including the time Charlie defeated a gang of skinheads with nothing more than a frozen chicken. Finally the show ends with a video game-inspired cocktail and a Pac-Man hit from the 80's. Sit back and listen, this one won't even cost you a quarter.
Ginny Tonic will freely admit that she knows bourbon, is above average on American whiskeys and has a passing knowledge of scotch. That said, her experience of Irish whiskey almost entirely consists of shots of Jameson done at the bars. Join them as they explore a 12 year, a 14 year and a 16 year!

After a quick intro, you will get to share that same experience before we close with a quick follow-up drink of Ranger Creek's .44 Rye Whiskey.

It’s a classic Charlie Tonic Bottoms Up this week as we flash back to the start of 2013 and our afternoon sampling beer in the private tap room located in the heart of the Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. in Lexington, KY. This the home of the wonderful Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. Join us as we discuss the beers of Alltech with their brewing craftsmen (and a few marketing reps). It’s a side of Alltech the public doesn’t usually get to see and we bring it to you in a short shot of audio once again this week.
Have you ever wanted to sit down with Ginny and Charlie for an hour while you ask them questions about how they got started, where the names came from, and what they geek out on the most? Well you are in luck because Troy Copes of the Uncommon Geek has done it for you. On this week's show we are running the audio interview Troy did with Ginny and Charlie that answers all of those questions and more.
Rye whiskey is a classic American whiskey that is making a big comeback lately. Ginny and Charlie talk about this trend and why it is making a comeback. Then they taste one of the leading brands of rye, Bulleit Rye Whiskey and use it to make an outstanding manhattan.
It is a bourbon-heavy show this week but we are guessing our listeners will be ok with that. After a weekend wrap-up Ginny and Charlie sit down with Molly Wellmann at the Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar to talk about the bar, her new cocktail book, and of course, bourbon. After that we have a review of the bourbon Molly recommended and a song by a stand out new group, Typhoon. Trust us, they will blow you away.
This week on Bottoms Up, Ginny and Charlie learn that BJ’s and beer are a great combination. A visit to BJ’s Brewhouse brings us some tasty beer and a discussion on how this national chain is trying to keep their brew-pub roots alive while fitting into Cincinnati’s beer scene.
During a weekend of cocktails, bachelorettes, and parties Ginny gets obsessed with a new music service and an old way of eating while Charlie celebrates the sale of his farm with a vintage bottle of wine. Listen today for all the fun.
Sometimes girls just want to have fun and drink some sugary cocktails. This week Ginny makes two shots and a cocktail using Buttershots, Bailey’s and Kahlua in preparation for an upcoming bachelorette party. With sexy names and a sweet taste, these drinks will go down well with your whole hen party.
This week we're visiting the prison system with the new Netflix original series Orange is the New Black. It's a remarkably good new series that has Ginny Tonic and Charlie tuning back in nightly. After that they take a look at the current state of pop music and discuss the thinning line between mainstream and alternative music. After that, it's a bit of the old Dragon's Milk for Bottoms Up and a quick close. All this plus a week's worth of stories and you have the latest installment of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
Ginny Tonic and Charlie return! For this week’s Bottoms Up we flash back to episode #49 of the Charlie Tonic Hour for a classic episode as Charlie dons a blindfold and takes on a four martini challenge to determine his gin of choice. Where else are you going to see that kind of entertainment? Answer… nowhere but Bottoms Up!
Charlie and Ginny are back with a new episode as they feature two very different but equally interesting guest interviews this week. One guest puts on historic tours and discusses an almost wild west history of Cincinnati while the other lives a very Uncommon Geek life these days. Join our hosts as they interview, are interviewed, live through a very fast paced week, sample some vodka and talk about a band that's already broken up. It's a new episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
Egg whites are a common ingredient in many classic cocktails but can be intimidating for the casual home mixologist. This week Ginny and Charlie make two classic egg white cocktails, The Ramos Gin Fizz and the Bourbon Flip, and help you realize why you shouldn’t fear the egg. With a little basic safety precautions and a lot of shaking, you can be mixing your own gin fizz up at home in no time.
It's a "parental discretion is advised" kind of episode this week (which means it's going to be a LOT of fun)! From the earliest days of the show, we always wanted to be able to talk about any topic that came up and treat sex especially in a normal, conversational way during those times it takes center stage. This week a listener reminds us of one such topic we mentioned a few months back and we take the request for an extended conversation. Yes, this week we share a very interesting discussion of male versus female sex toys and look at the way in which male sexuality is viewed in our culture. We also share our thoughts on the recent Russian vodka boycott and swing by a local tavern to try a very celebrated local beer. All this plus a beekeeper before it's done? This week it gets interesting!
A law office high above Cincinnati is an unusual setting for a tequila tasting but sometimes you just have to follow where the alcohol leads. This week Ginny and Charlie meet with two of the owners of el Arco premium tequila to taste their wears and learn what makes el Arco stand apart from the other top shelf tequila brands. Along they way they also get a nice lesson in the nature and history of tequila.
It was a quite, contemplative week for Ginny and Charlie since they spent most of it at Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting getting their Quake on, but that only means they came back ready to rock and roll all the harder. On this week’s show Ginny and Charlie explore the changing face of YouTube while discussing the documentary Please Subscribe as well as finding out just how Cincinnati came to be ranked the 6th most sinful city in America by a recent article. A review of Larceny Bourbon and a sexy song close out the show. Hope you enjoy!
Have you heard of the Bluegrass Sundown? It is a dark roasted coffee infused with Kentucky Bourbon and sugar which makes a wonderful little cocktail that’s really quite original. How does it taste in other mixes? Ginny Tonic and Charlie explore this Irish Coffee with a decidedly Kentucky spin and share all the details in this week’s episode!
After a busy week filled with stories, we're feeling the pull to talk tech as both of our main discussion segments play around with the concept of tech in our lives. First, we look at the emotional impact of things like Facebook and Instagram then turn our attention to a Twitter assault in the news. How does Jane Austin and a July Christmas come into the discussion? Where does Lucinda Williams and Molly Wellman fit into this equation? You'll just have to listen and learn.
While tearing through Over-The-Rhine (OTR) here in Cincinnati on a fun night, a slightly inebriated Ginny Tonic and Charlie share a very classic Manhattan with Zachary Yingling at the ever amazing Japps Since 1879. Join us for the conversation, the atmosphere and the cocktail!
It's a beautiful summer day here at the Charlie Tonic studios and we have a fun episode lined up for you. After a short Discourse Intercourse segment, Ginny Tonic and Charlie begin with a discussion of the documentary Prohibition but end up covering a lot of political and philosophical ground before they're done. What exactly does Charlie wish he could say on a show but hasn't? Listen and find out!
From there Calamity Dawn and Dorian of Calamity Labs stop by for a Bottoms Up visit. While they are here, they share an update on all their mixology projects and serve our hosts a wonderful surprise cocktail of their own creation. From there, we end the show with a band that framed Charlie's college days and helped introduce him to alternative music; the Butthole Surfers. Strap yourselves in kiddies, there's a colorful ride ahead this week.
It is a beer kind of day. Ginny and Charlie taste and discuss the Dundee Beer Spring/Summer Variety pack that includes a Kolsch-style ale, a Pale Bock Lager, a Stout and an India Pale Ale. Four beers for the price of one podcast? That’s a deal you can’t miss.
Ginny and Charlie and bringing the fun back hard this week. After making a major podcasting revelation, Ginny and Charlie discuss their recent trip to Kings Island and share tips for making your amusement park experience a good one. Then they answer a listener question about what makes a good bar, try a local beer, and come back after the break with a second discourse intercourse. That’s right, it’s a two-intercourse show this week so you know you won’t want to miss that.
Way back when Ginny and Charlie were first starting the Charlie Tonic Hour, a friend named Calamity Dawn made them an official Charlie Tonic cocktail. Now, over a year and half later Ginny and Charlie have added a second podcast and that friend has graduated bartending school and is on her way to becoming a professional mixologist. Yes, times have changed but we have not. In today’s show you can hear how Calamity Dawn got started in creating her custom drinks that she is now famous for in Steampunk circles and the inspiration behind the Charlie Tonic. Cheers!
Life returns to normal following Derby City Comic Con, or at least as close to normal as and Ginny and Charlie are capable of getting. First they discuss an article by a recovering Manic Pixie Dream Girl and how fiction creates our reality. A quick discussion of two compelling apps is followed by a Trappist beer and a British band with a French name and an Italian song. So yeah, that sounds about normal.
After 21 episodes, Ginny and Charlie finally get around to reviewing a basic vodka. This week they try Tito’s Handmade Vodka from the Mockingbird Distillery in Austin, Texas. Tito’s has a great story and luckily it has a great vodka to back it up. We try the vodka and then make ourselves a Godmother cocktail to with it just to make sure we still liked it. Download and listen to hear all the details.
Ginny and Charlie are back to at least half steam for Episode #80. After recording their thoughts about Derby City Comic Con they head out for some shore leave that includes a massage and an excellent steak dinner. Then they come back with a bottle of homebrewed mead they got from a friend at Derby City. If you want to hear the inside scoop about Derby City, discover the proper way to recover from a convention, or just discover the secret to great mead, you won’t want to miss this show.
Ginny and Charlie are doing double duty this week. They are working on setting up Derby City Comic Con, the comic convention Charlie owns in Louisville, but they also have a podcast to record. So of course this week’s show will have to be the unveiling of the official cocktail of Derby City Comic Con, The Constantine. Named after Charlie’s favorite comic character, John Constantine, this easy to make cocktail features a Johnny Walker Double Black to honor the characteristic smoking of the character, with a bit of Tuaca for balance. Add a dash of bitters and a splash of club soda and you’ve got yourself a great drink.
We are three days away from Derby City Comic Con, the biggest day of the year for Charlie and an event he's been working toward for over a year. This annual comic convention is looming as Ginny Tonic and Charlie catch you up on all the fun they've been having, share some behind the scenes info on the show preparations and same a wonderfully smokey blended scotch whiskey. It may be a short show, but it still packs a punch!
This week Ginny and Charlie bring you a treat from the Charlie Tonic archives. From her pin-up fabulous hair to her classic tattoo’s, Molly Wellmann is clearly a woman who takes the best of what the past has to offer and gives it her own modern touch. Back in April 2012 when Charlie and I sat down with Cincinnati’s most famous mixologist at her bar Japp’s in Over the Rhine for Episode 15‘s Bottoms Up segment I knew I was in for a treat and I was not disappointed. So sit back and relax as Molly mixes up a martinez, a classic early cocktail that is considered a forerunner of the martini.
After a very unexpected episode last week due to the death of Charlie's step-father, we're back with the episode that was originally set to run on that Wednesday. It's filled with animated series, cartoons, stories, music and even a Batman themed cocktail. Join us as we begin the quest to catch back up with ourselves for next week's show!
It’s a blast from the past for Bourbon Day today. In honor of the invention of bourbon by Elijah Craig in 1789 we present you with a review of our favorite “everyday” bourbon, Ancient Age 10 Star. This more modest bottle out of the Buffalo Trace distillery is a lovely, rye-heavy, bourbon that is surprisingly smooth for the price point. Although the 10 Star hasn’t been as available lately you should snap up a bottle if you find one. If your local liquor store doesn’t have it, go ahead and splurge on the 10 year. You won’t regret it.
Charlie refuses to miss a week of the show and records a very heartfelt mini-episode live without edits after receiving some sad news and starting a drive north to be with family.
Many people who drink shy away from tequila having sampled rougher versions of this fine beverage in their youth. Join Ginny Tonic and Charlie as they demystify the aging process a bit and share some pointers on how to find the good stuff. Along the way they share a great summer cocktail and sample a very nice 1800 Reposado Tequila. Your short shot of alcohol just before the weekend is ready to enjoy!
This week sees the return of a few classics things that Ginny and Charlie loved in their youth, but before we get to the main segments, Ginny shares her experiences leading bourbon tasting at a party. After that they discuss the new season of Arrested Development and discuss the implications of the coming “Starbucks of Pot.” Finally Ginny makes up an Afternoon Delight and we end with some classic rock. It is a groovy fun show this week that you won’t want to miss.
While Ginny Tonic and Charlie were down in Memphis, they took time out to look for local craft beers and learned just how great they have it in Cincinnati. That said, they came back with two local favorites, Lazy Magnolia Brewing’s Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale and Ghost River Brewing’s Golden Ale. Listen as they discuss Memphis beer culture, sample a bottle each of these beers and share tales from the road.
It's the Charlie Tonic "Magic Mystery Trip" Year 1 as Charlie hits the highway with Ginny Tonic taking her to an undisclosed location within the US. As you can guess from the episode title, it was Memphis. Ride along for a "road show" episode as Ginny and Charlie share audio from the trip, tell a ton of stories, visit a very amazing bar and share what has been described as the very first song of rock and roll. It's the beginning of an annual travel tradition for these two and the show. Be here from the start!
This week on Bottoms Up we take a closer look at a single barrel bourbon named after a living legend. Elmer T. Lee. Named after Master Distiller Emeritus Elmer T. Lee, this 90 proof bourbon put out by the Buffalo Trace Distillery is a balanced, rich bourbon good for sipping or in a cocktail. And use it in a cocktail we did, as Ginny gives her muddler a workout and makes a Blackberry Bourbon Fizz. This one is guaranteed to make you thirsty.
This week Ginny and Charlie enjoy a night of great beer, an unexpected Killer’s Concert, and meet up with friends at a Gatsby-worthy house for a few drinks. And that was just Thursday. You will have to listen to get the rest of the weekend. And if you do you will also learn about an impressive new bourbon review website, get an earful of innuendos (if you know what I mean,) and learn the secret to a great cup of coffee. So sit back, relax, and enjoy. Another episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour is about to hit your ears.
A local brewery that makes some great beer is one thing. You won’t want to miss it!
This week's episode runs a bit shorter as Charlie has had a rough week and was hitting the bottom of the barrel just as we sat down to record. Hear all about the highs and lows of the past few days as Ginny Tonic and Charlie step back up to the mic. Along the way, we share a couple new board games you might just enjoy, revisit and serve up an improved hot toddy and bring out the "Switchblade" to cut the show short. It's another episode of the Charlie Tonic hour served up for your enjoyment.
This week Ginny and Charlie combine the domestic and the foreign to make a summer cocktail that is sure to please. First we taste and discuss St. Germain, a French elderflower liqueur that also happens to be one of the most beautiful and romantic bottles we’ve seen. And on top of all that, it tastes great and proves this is one bottle you need to have on your bar shelf. The cocktail that Ginny creates for the show using St. Germain, dubbed the “Elder Whimsy” by Charlie, is made with a strawberry infused vodka that Ginny made a few weeks ago. The result was a lovely summertime drink that would be perfect for Mother’s Day. Tune in as we taste, mix, and try this wonderful concoction.
This week we’re joined by special guest Holden Fury (of Hellapalooza fame) for an extended drinks segment. During that "Bottoms Up", Ginny Tonic unveils her creations which will be featured at this upcoming show. Also, Charlie celebrates his inner fanboy as he discusses why he likes the books and shows of Anthony Bourdain. All this plus a few songs to end things on a decidedly underworldly note. Yes, this time the deadly sins have the Charlie Tonic Hour to thank and have never tasted so good!
Ginny Tonic received an invite she couldn’t turn down. Chipotle Mexican Grill (a regular favorite stop for both she and Charlie when grabbing food on the quick) invited her to a private tasting as the company reached out to the media inviting them to try their new hand-crafted margaritas made with fresh ingredients and quality tequila (Patron), rather than the mix-in ingredients the chain used before. Craft cocktails at a fast food restaurant? Ginny samples a few margaritas, gathers some audio with a company rep (and a few local food bloggers) and returns to discuss her experience with Charlie for this week’s episode!
Ginny Tonic and Charlie are back from the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) and they're loaded up with comic topics to discuss. A couple of those even make it onto the show this week!
Upholding their C2E2 tradition for the second consecutive year, they select three creators to interview during the show and share those conversations. Also this week Ginny and Charlie discuss how to ask for money and cover the nature and sustainability of Kickstarter. Next, they feature a couple beers in the Bottoms Up segment that come direct from the show and include a twist they didn't see coming. They end (after almost forgetting to record the close) a little tipsy with music made by the man who inspired Charlie to podcast!
Ginny Tonic and Charlie are off on a traveling adventure as they visit the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (aka C2E2). For this week episode we present our first ever flashback Bottoms Up episode. After a brief into by this podcasting duo, we jump back to Episode #8 of the Charlie Tonic Hour and share the story of how these two tried an amazing Sazerac with the classic cocktail maestro Rommel Wells over at the Rookwood.
There are two distinct parts to Episode 70. In one part of the show we find the (relatively) sober and thoughtful Ginny Tonic and Charlie that you’ve come to know and love. They share stories from a fun weekend with pin ups and beer, recommend a book about online dating and flip things by discussing the finer points of online recommendations eventually bringing you a nice song to close out the show. Sandwiched between these segments of the show is a boozy Bottoms Up segment like you've never heard before. They do a drinks segment in four parts with the notorious CJ Biro but the trick is that each segment comes after a gap of about one hour and several drinks. You will have to listen and tell Ginny how it sounded because she doesn't remember the end of the night all that well.
With the warmth of spring finally being felt in Cincinnati, Ginny Tonic and Charlie are in the mood for some fresh and fruity drinks. What better way to do this than with some homemade syrup using fresh ingredients? Making your own syrups at home is easy and it is a great way to personalize your cocktails with any flavor combination you can dream up. Ginny has been making quite a few different flavors lately and brings two different ones to this week’s show. With her Rosemary Mint syrup they make a Gin Mojito and with her Mandarin Orange syrup they make a drink they eventually call Ginny’s Crush. Different, refreshing and perfect for the change in seasons, join us for the latest episode!
The past 68 episodes have included innuendo, hints, discussions and even a few confessions. But for episode 69 we are going all the way. You wanted it badly, you asked for it and we are going to give it to you. An all sexy episode is here for your aural pleasure. First, we catch you up on our weekend including the naughty comics of S.P.A.C.E. Next, we give into peer pressure and share the Victorian Erotica panel from last year’s Steampunk Empire Symposium. Finally, we end with a kinky-creamy drink and a sexy song from Max Raabe. So lie back, close your eyes, and just give in to the pleasure.
Ginny and Charlie get hot this week. Stoli makes some very good flavored vodkas but their jalapeno vodka is really unique. While other vodkas seem to be in an arms race to see who can convert junk food into drinkable form the fastest, Stoli went the other direction by creating the only pepper vodka with real heat. Listen to the show and hear Ginny and Charlie sampling it for the first time and then they try four different cocktails made with the Stoli Hot. Things get steamy fast!
On this week’s episode Ginny and Charlie head separate directions, with Charlie exploring all Tricon has to offer and Ginny getting up close and personal with some hot monkey loving. Their review of the film Looper somehow ends in discussion about feminism and Wonder Woman and then Ginny shares her love of Annette Funicello tells you why you need to go Back to the Beach. Finally we end with an off putting canned beverage and a song from Japanese girl-group Shonen Knife.
The spirit of exploration and discovery calls to many of us who love libations. The thrill of discovering a new flavor, method, or winery is rivaled only by the pleasure in recommending your new treasure to friends. Seeker Wine brand seems to understand this experience and tries to communicate this excitement in their wine with their Steampunk-themed labels and thoughtful selection.
“The Seeker is a global brand brought to market by a family company with 65 years of experience and relationships with family wineries spanning the globe, seeking out top-quality wines from the regions that grow them best.
The Seeker crosses time zones and continents in a relentless quest for the world’s best wines, bringing the thrill of adventure and discovery with each sip.”
Ginny and Charlie stared the week trying Seeker’s Red Wines and today on Bottom’s up they try the white varieties: A creamy un-oaked Chardonnay from California and a bright and fruity Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.
This week Ginny and Charlie take a break from the comic convention circuit to enjoy a very fun weekend in Lexington. First they stopped by Cosmic Charlie’s for a rare Doctor Bombay/Ford Theater Reunion double-header. Then Ginny lead the way on the inaugural event of Tonic Tours. This means a full day of good food, good drinks, and great friends. All this alcohol leads to a discussion of the past, present and future of craft cocktails and then Charlie leads a discussion about two of the most important things in life: Death and Facebook. From there they seek out some wine. The Seeker Wines have five wines in their collection and Ginny and Charlie are trying the reds this week. Finally they close out with a song from the King himself and bid farewell to Episode 67.
Charlie and Ginny were separated by several states this week but that didn’t stop them from bringing you a new episode. Like a true boozehound, Ginny is able to track down quality whiskey in the most unlikely locations. In between taffy shops, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and airbrush t-shirt shops in downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee you can find Davy Crockett’s Tennessee Whiskey. Come along as Ginny tastes all six of their offerings and brings a bottle back home for Charlie. And as for the cocktail…the less said about that the better.
To say that Ginny Tonic and Charlie have been racing through the last few weeks attending conventions and celebrating life would be an understatement. As these two come off their third consecutive weekend on the road, they take time out to record the show (well, most of it anyway) and reflect on what’s been happening. With that reflection comes a discussion of travel, “con life” and the families you make on the road. From there they take you to an extended Bottoms Up segment as they attend the opening party for Yard House at the Banks in Cincinnati, OH. Charlie then closes out the show with a bit of music and it’s a wrap for episode #66. Won’t you join us for the Hour?
This week, Ginny Tonic and Charlie dodge the basketball action and instead offer you Slate Magazine’s Official Martini Madness Bracket where 64 different versions of the classic martini go head-to-head in a winner takes all the olives (or none of the olives as the case may be) tournament. For the show, podcast hosts grab four entries from round #1 and drink up. It’s the Nick and Norah vs. the Montgomery vs. the FDR vs. the Traditional Sweet Martini… Let’s get ready to rumble!
Go to a comic convention and bump it a rock star. Not a bad way to spend the weekend as we check in with Jared Champion from Cage the Elephant who joins us for part of this week’s show. From there the discussion turns to charting music in today’s world, we break open that Henry McKenna Single Barrel 10 Year we’ve mentioned then return to Jared’s band for the close. It’s a week worth celebrating on this installment of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
Ginny Tonic loves her ginger. Charlie, not so much. What happens when these two mix it up trying Domaine De Canton, a French ginger liqueur? Can Ginny win Charlie over with her mixology? She tries and succeeds with two classic coctails and one of her own creation on this week’s episode. Join us, won’t you?
Our weekend found us in Louisville, KY for the Louisville Arcade Expo as we enjoyed three days of retro gaming goodness featuring 100's of arcade, pinball and console games. Along the way Ginny Tonic slipped off for a regional bourbon and wine tour, which she discusses. Ginny and Charlie shared dinners with friends old and new as stories emerged we’re excited to share. As for the convention itself, we cover it in a "road show" segment recorded at 70+ mph. Before the end, we stop off to tell you about an amazing film, sample three bourbons by a well known, family owner company and unveil a musical recommendation that actually kicked off our weekend unexpectedly. There's lots to listen to so let's get started!
What if there were a taproom and beer garden where the beer list is never the same but is always local to the city in which it lives? What if there were a brewery that measured its success not only by making great craft beer but also by how it helps their community? What if there was a brewery that strived to protect the environment even if it costs them more to do so? What if their desire was simply to create the best beer possible and to be an integral part of building a great beer culture in their city? That place is the West Sixth Brewing Company, it exists in Lexington, KY and on this week’s show Ginny Tonic and Charlie stop by to sample six beers for the episode. Bottoms Up!
After a weekend filled with great food and amazing beer, we return to tell the tales and share the adventure with you. Join us as we visit two breweries, interview one of the owners of Country Bow Brewing and enjoy an utterly amazing meal at Azur. If that were not enough, Ginny Tonic shares more info on her plans for Tonic Tours. Join us for a pint, a growler or even a howler and we'll introduce you to some new music before we're done. Episode #63 is ready for you listening pleasure!
On our third episode of Bottoms Up, we decided to grab a theme for this week’s show. That theme is chocolate! It starts with a four-treat sample of some fine Valentine’s Day alcohol infused chocolates and ends with an interesting little chocolate martini. Join us for the fun as, in the end, this segment had us vowing to drink our desert much more often!
In this week's episode Ginny Tonic and Charlie look back on a weekend that included some very fun Victorian parlor games. They also enjoy a lively discussion about the term hipster and modern culture, talk about the Oscars without seeing any movies, sample a wonderful bourbon gift and close with some New Orleans music. We're trying a few new things this week and invite you to come along for the ride.
Has it been a week already? The brand new Bottoms Up podcast is back for episode #2 as your hosts Ginny Tonic and Charlie hit five bars for craft cocktails in under 90 minutes!
For this week’s show we took part in Yelp Drinks Cincinnati. This is their citywide, week-long (February 18th – February 24th, 2013) happy hour. Cincinnatians know how to have fun. As it happens, so does Yelp and so does the Bottoms Up podcast. For seven straight days, Yelp has coordinated a mix of 50% drink specials at bars and restaurants all around Cincy. These participating businesses have each chosen three of their best bevies to show off and with that in mind, how could Ginny and Charlie not join the fun?
Listen in as this duo of alcohol creativity races around to town squeezing as much as they can into an hour and a half.
Ginny Tonic and Charlie return from the Cincy Winter Beerfest full of stories and a few of them can even be shared on this week’s show. After a quick catch up on all the fun, these two cover the new Netflix original series House of Cards and discuss what this show (and shows like it) might mean for television’s future. From there they dip a toe into the hot water of the recent DC Comics controversy. The company invited controversial (and quite homophobic) Orson Scott Card to write the first few issues of a new Superman series and reactions have been all over the news. Our Bottoms Up segment comes directly from the floor of Beerfest as Tom Aguero from Queen City Drinks joins us for a great beer review. From there we close with some music and serve up a very full show this week.
We are thrilled to unveil the new Bottoms Up podcast with your hosts Ginny Tonic and Charlie. What you have here is an alcohol infused show with a side of sexy brought to you by the hosts of the Charlie Tonic Hour. We’ll be sharing new shows every Friday and this podcast will be short format with shows lasting from 10 – 15 minutes in length.
This week, we explore exactly what is so wonderfully sinful about Envy? Angel’s Envy that is. This coveted bourbon whiskey is aged up to 6 years in charred white oak barrels and finished in ruby port wine casks and has been described by Wine and Spirits Magazine as a “Living Legend”. We decided to launch our new podcast with it as it has factored heavily into year one of our sister podcast, the Charlie Tonic Hour.
Sit back, grab a drink, listen and enjoy!
The Voodoo Carnival is a much-celebrated annual event here in Cincinnati. This week we're featuring an attendee interview/report from Lord Spencington, an individual who not only took part in the show but also took his clothes off for on stage for the very first time. Hear how this act of bravery grew out of his listening to an episode of the show. Also this week, Ginny Tonic and Charlie catch up with the Grammys, share some more stories from their lives and sample some flavorful Moonshine.
Did someone request a side order of sexy? It’s been a while since they’ve gone there, but Ginny Tonic and Charlie are tackling sex advice this week as they get playful and a bit introspective. Also in episode #59, Charlie shares some of his favorite recent board game discoveries and then he and Ginny Tonic close out the audio from their Lexington, KY trip with a fact packed visit to Barrel House Distilling Company. All this and a band called the Jealous Sound make for a fun show that leaves Charlie wondering what he admitted to this time out.
This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie have a few surprises in store for you. Interested in hearing about Ginny’s new business, Tonic Tours? Curious to hear about the new podcast these two are launching? All this and more will be revealed before the show is done. Along the way though they return to Alltech's Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company to sample their full line of beer, explore the nature of life as they review the Life of Pi, share some interesting alcohol themed phone apps and end things with some upbeat music. These two have the itch for a niche this week and they find it during episode #58!
Once again, life is good! Ginny Tonic and Charlie ventured to Lexington, KY visiting bars, breweries and distilleries for the show and a secret future project. They share tales of those adventures then serve up the first of three audio segments from the weekend. This week they take you to Alltech's Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company for a round of spirits. Also this time out, the podcasting duo looks ahead speculating on some films that have them excited and offer up some music to snuggle up to on a cold winter night. Episode #57 begins with a cocktail and you should too!
This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie have some great stories to share as they explore Cincinnati and stumble at least once along the way. Rap enters the discussion in small ways during three out of the four segments (Ludachris and Lil Wayne chiefly). We also talk tech and sample some fine cognac before this one is done. Also, we unveil an upcoming distillery visit you'll hear about in great detail next week.
Welcome back dear listeners! This week Ginny Tonic leads a discussion on equal pay for women while Charlie returns to world of comic books for a look at the current state of DC and Marvel storytelling. They walk you through the week that was, sample a bit of port and close with an artist’s music that they both love. Episode #55 is ready to be tasted.
It's hard to believe that a full year has already passed since the Charlie Tonic Hour took to the podcast airwaves. This week, for their one-year anniversary, Charlie and Ginny Tonic are LOADED UP with stories as they both had quite the time leading up to New Years. From the holidays to soul massaging music events to a sense that they're ready for 2013 to begin, it's an extended Discourse Intercourse segment that still had these two rushing to cover everything. Also this week, Ginny and Charlie speculate about time and calendars and share some resolutions (not just for themselves but for the show itself). They also try a cocktail to quell that nagging hangover that sees the return of their old friend Tabasco. From there they even end with a bit of music that has many looking for the notes that aren't there just as much as those that are. Yes, we're running a bit longer this week but there was just so much to say. Grab a drink, join us and enjoy!
Charlie grabs a very excited yet rushed Ginny Tonic and pulls her over to the mic as these two share a slightly shorter episode this week. All the holiday planning and prep is in full swing for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day as they record just after the Absolute End Of Everything celebration in Lexington. Hear the stories and enjoy a candy coated drink segment that warms Charlie in a slightly unexpected way. After that, they share a bit of music geared toward surviving a Yuletide zombie apocalypse and say farewell. It may be half the time this week, but it's doubly packed with Charlie Tonic holiday cheer.
This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie are in the Christmas spirit as they dedicate the entire episode to the holiday. What do they have in store this week? How about stories, drinks and music? Here, the duo catches you up on the latest holiday events, takes you on a tour of their ten favorite holiday songs and they share an extended Bottoms Up segment featuring not one, but three holiday themed drinks. It’s a festive episode bringing you Christmas as only the Charlie Tonic Hour can.
Ginny Tonic and Charlie are settling into the Christmas season as they partake in a discussion of Christmas parties sharing a few stories, recent and past. Ginny also discusses the surprising redesign of the traditional hoodie. Charlie discovers a new band during a night out on the town. All this and the playful innuendo is back in full swing this week. The Charlie Tonic hour finds its holiday groove as we begin the countdown to our one-year anniversary and share details!
This past weekend we traveled to Madison, WI for TelsaCon 3: A Trip To The Moon. This immersive steampunk convention was a blast and the room parties were even more fun. Join us this week for your celebratory 50th episode as we look back on the show and take you inside two of the gatherings for an almost all drink segment show. For one party we had people lining up to give us drinks and the closed door of our room spawned rumors thoughtout the show. In our second drink segment a bit of bubbly celebrates our 50th. Join us for all the fun.
Ginny Tonic and Charlie return! This week, after catching up on current events, the dynamic duo kick off the segments asking each other what they wanted to be when they grew up. After a few stories, they end up on a discussion covering no less than the meaning of life. From there they find a comfy seat in the library and offer you a mix of book recommendations for the holidays. For this week's Bottoms Up segment, Charlie dons a blindfold as he takes on a four martini challenge. Where else are you going to see that kind of combination other than the Charlie Tonic Hour? Answer... nowhere. A nice cover song closes out the show as we look ahead to next week's 50th episode!
It's Thanksgiving and the holiday season is raging toward us with a flaming debit card in hand. This has Charlie and Ginny Tonic thinking about consumerism, tradition and how much a person really needs in life. From Fight Club to Brussels sprouts, there are lots of stories framing the segments this week. After these two tackle the holiday, Charlie shares his thoughts on the Showtime series Shameless. The two discuss the more clean cut elements of what should be a gritty story as this one goes beyond the show itself. After that it's a drink that should have stayed a Wedding Cake and we close with some beautiful Southern music uncovered by Ginny. We're counting down to episode #50 and there's much to be thankful for as a new episode is delivered for your feast.
This week we see the return of Aloysius Fox to the show as our favorite movie reviewer takes a look at a movie franchise he loves. The James Bond film Skyfall is the focus as he digs in with Ginny and Charlie. Aloysius also sticks around for a Ginny Tonic libation creation in the Bottoms Up segment. Think that's enough? Not even close. This week Ginny and Charlie also catch you up on the events of the last couple weeks, share a classic music selection and get into an interesting discussion of art and personal creativity. The Charlie Tonic Hour returns!
Sometimes you just get lucky in life and a really great afternoon comes together. You know the kind. You make plans, they fun and you have your hopes up as you arrive. Often things don’t live up to those hopes but every rare once in a while they turn out so much better than expected. Such was the case a few weeks ago when Ginny Tonic and Charlie joined Ford Theatre Reunion at the Beer Trappe in Lexington, KY. They planned to try a few beers and deepen their understanding but what followed was a legendary afternoon, which was caught on audio, edited and served up for your enjoyment this week. The day was a bit educational, utterly fun, humor filled and in the end no less than a celebration of beer. Cheers!
As this episode is going live on Halloween, Charlie and Ginny Tonic have decided to dedicate the entire show to the holiday. After they catch you up on the Halloween mischief they've been up to it's history, sexy costumes, favorite films that go bump in the night and a cocktail that fits with the season. Add to that some appropriate music with a sense of history and you have a new episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie are settling in for a bit of food and a longer discussion of alcohol. What makes a good restaurant? What are some of their favorite food stories? What does it mean to drink too much? Where do Ginny and Charlie rate themselves on the CDC guidelines for alcohol consumption? What do Calamity Dawn, Gintia and Peter Beerslayer have to do with this week's show? All these questions and more are answered in just over an hour. Join us as episode #44 of the Charlie Tonic Hour is unveiled!
Charlie and Ginny Tonic are telling stories throughout this episode and having lot of fun as they let themselves go a bit longer this week. There was just too much interesting stuff to cut any of it out as these two talk about what's been going on in their lives, dip into a discussion of Joss Whedon, circle around for a pre-apocalyptic film review, go a little loco over a beverage neither want to try again and share some of their first experiences with alcohol. All this plus an extra sprinkling of musical Joss at the end and you have a very fun episode.
We had some amazing segments planned out for episode #42, but you're going to have to wait a short seven days to see those audio plans come together. This week, we're racing to the finish with a "short" episode. What's a short? Well, basically we catch you up on life, sample two drinks for the bottoms up segment and call it a fun little episode. This one won't take you long to enjoy, but we will be back next week with a full hour. Cheers!
This week we kick things off with a discussion of some interesting upcoming events, the success that was Pandoracon and a look at some of Charlie's birthday fun. From there the show turns to more of our favorite podcasts for a quick "round two" on this topic as Ginny Tonic and Charlie serve up six more shows that fill their iPod on a regular basis. Next, Star Trek replicators, 3D printers and the future of design is discussed as an emerging new creative culture takes center stage. We're speculating about society changing once again. We close out the show with a solid budget bourbon recommendation and our first returning music recommendation. We’ve found our groove once again here at the Charlie Tonic Hour!
This week we're back as we share our stories from the weekend's Cincinnati Comics Expo, talk a little about what we can learn about trust from robots, share a drink that didn't knock our socks off and find our Motown-esque vide for a musical closer. Charlie Tonic Hour #40, ready for your listening pleasure!
Ginny Tonic takes the lead plotting out this week's topics for the Charlie Tonic Hour and a very interesting show followed. We start with some body modification as a new trend emerges within cosplay and it has an anime focus. From there Ginny found a very interesting angle to discuss yesterdays Mitt Romney's leaked fundraiser video as she and Charlie do their best to be non-political. In the last segments, a Cincinnati beer takes center stage and the music of Morphine chimes in from the past. It's time everyone! Join us for a new episode.
We're back! This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie catch you up on life and settle into a longer discussion of community and what it means to build friendships in the modern age. After coming together, they deconstruct the world a bit with a return to the ever-popular post-apocalyptic discussion. This time the podcasting duo looks at how to pimp your ride for the day after it all falls apart. In the third segment they discuss Ginny's recent visit to Vinoklet Winery and Restaurant and try some local wine. Music comes in three parts this week as the two close out the show. Grab a drink, settle in and enjoy. The Charlie Tonic Hour is here for you.
Well folks, it had to happen. This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie simply ran out of time to build a full episode. That said, we have a "short" to share with you and it's a drink segment. Kristen, Emma and Dan join Ginny at a local favorite restaurant, Nada, for the recording. Drinks were already flowing long before the recorder launched but Oyster Shooters and Tequila were the focus of this fun, inebriated little segment. We'll be back with a new full episode next week.
This week the Discourse Intercourse stories from the past week grows into a full segment on how make the most of a great beer. From there the discussion moves to Pinterest but along the way that chat takes a decidedly "Charlie Tonic" turn for the sexy as a copycat site with a very familiar name spices up the discussion. In the end we'll try to get you to mix ice cream and beer for your taste buds then pitch a British superstar for your listening pleasure. This episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour may leave you hungry in more ways than one but we hope it satisfies.
This week two things are a little different about the show. First, we keep it under an hour, which rarely seems possible these days. Second, the sound of nature infuses our podcast as we record with the windows open for a change. What hasn't shifted is the constant conversation, which was particularly solid this week. Charlie and Ginny Tonic go from the big bang to the possible final pop for paper in two short segments. The Mars rover begins a discussion of science then Charlie throws down the gauntlet with a prediction few agree with regarding the future of print media. After that, these two share a shot and accept a creative challenge in the drink segment. In the close, the musical recommendation almost goes unnamed but they get it together in the end. Join us for some tech, science, and geeky fun this week as episode #35 has arrived!
This week we have a road show for you. We're not necessarily returning from a show, but we were traveling for five days and the drive back turned into the only chance we had to record so we made a theme of it. Learn what happened on the road, who we ran into and more in the Discourse Intercourse segment. After that we tell some of our favorite travel stories as Charlie shares more of his past. Next up we share six podcasts we love to listen to while we're driving and serve up a musical recommendation in the close that was even a surprise to us. A fun show involving tollbooths, police speculation and much more. Do not miss it!
The word this week is clearly "fun". We kick off the show discussing steampunk gatherings then turn our focus to some of our most embarrassing celebrity crushes, past and present. Our listeners jump into this segment with a mix of recommendations. From there we shift to some tech talk that is decidedly non-tech. Facebook is concerned about double identities and that leads to a discussion of our own double lives. The music recommendation this week is ultra-cool retro and Charlie turns on the tease at the end once again.
It's interesting that one of the more difficult topics Ginny Tonic and Charlie have ever covered on the show would be the question of spirituality. This week, they both discuss a side of their life that hasn't been public and are brutally honest about their quest to a broader understanding of a side of life that is tough to explain. From there, we share movie reviews of both Abraham Lincoln and the Amazing Spider-Man films then settle into a Bottoms Up segment, music and the close. This week we promise a very interesting episode.
In this week's episode, we're taking a bit more serious tone as we discuss the Colorado shooting. Charlie comes from the world of comics, so we thought this was a topic we shouldn't shy away from as we consider it from a couple angles. Have no fear though, we eventually make it on to a listener suggested topic as we detail how we would survive (or fail) a zombie apocalypse. Along the way we cover the Midsummer Masquerade, Ford Theatre Reunion, MOTR and Japps. There's also a drunk drink segment recorded at a bar called Habits. It's a full show this week.
This week Ginny and Charlie report back from the red carpet as they attend the 48 Hour Film Project Awards here in Cincinnati. From there, the discussion turns to San Diego Comic Con as Charlie gives his impressions of the show and where he sees it fitting into the current state of comic culture. He's back to his roots in this discussion. For the close we present what may be one of the best drink segments in the history of the Charlie Tonic Hour. Maybe? Well, at the very least it comes with a really fun story and an edge of your seat taste test moment. From there we dip back to the 70's for a musical recommendation you'll have to hear to believe then close out the show.
We're back in the Charlie Tonic studios this week as we share a bit of advice on what you could wear (or not wear) to a masquerade. We go from thrifting to riffing to avoiding the heat in three easy steps. From there, we return with our second segment of app recommendations. It's news, tools and games as Ginny and Charlie both share three apps they love. How does this turn into a chat centered on sex? You'll have to listen and learn. In the end we close with some chocolate wine, a spot of obscure music and a little innuendo.
It's a slightly different Charlie Tonic Hour this week filled with big announcements, live-without-edits recordings, drunken moments, 70+ mph action and alcohol in unexpected places. All that and more as we "road show" Derby City, take a suggestion from the listeners for a show topic and bring you into a drinking circle live from happy hour. Classic show in the making? You decide.
This week there's a bit of parental discretion advised as Ginny Tonic and Charlie walk you through the week that was, sum up all the unexpected parties and visit a really outstanding bourbon bar. From there these two begin a discussion of kilts and end in a broader discussion of male sexuality. Charlie is put on the spot and answers honestly. Ginny also shares a couple interesting things that get her excited. After that Calamity Dawn stops off and makes a great Fluffer then we bring it home with a bit of music.
We're back from Florida and back behind the microphone filling the airwaves with conversation, opinions and the occasional innuendo. This week, Ginny Tonic shares her thoughts on buying a bikini and challenging yourself, she and Charlie chat about the first two episodes of the new Avatar animated series and sample a very interesting (and cheap) rum. Along the way there are stories from Florida, a bit of unexpected music and more as we settle back into life, once again, in Cincinnati.
We may be in Florida on vacation this week, but we still have a brand new episode for you! This week we cover the recent Radiohead concert, dip into a mix of listener suggested road music, talk about Ginny's quest to get healthy and sample a bit of home spun sangria. Join us pool side or over in the hot tub as we share a new mix of audio festivity!
This week it's human sexualty, great music and, for the first time ever, Ginny Tonic unveils a cocktail of her own creation. We kick things off with a Discourse Intercourse segment that's loaded with fun stories. From there, Charlie reports back on a panel hosted by some very brave individuals discussing what it's like to be transgendered. Next up, we share an interview recorded live at World Steam Expo with Frenchy and the Punk. As if that were not enough, Ginny unveils the Snow White... an original cocktail creation. It's a full week and a very exciting show which we're proud to share. Cheers!
We're back with a brand new Road Show podcast as Charlie, Ginny Tonic and Aloysius Fox are joined for the first time by Halcyon Hazzard. What is a Road Show? Road Show podcasts are recorded at, typically, 70 MPH in a moving automobile and they're done live without breaks or edits. It's a stream of consiuosness take on the convention done shortly after leaving the show. In these episodes, you hear the stories, the excitement and this week we're covering the World Steam Expo. We go from discussing the con to the music of the show to the parties in just over an hour. Pop this episode in the car stereo and ride along with us as we look back on a very fun show.
For this BONUS episode, we share over two hours of audio as we flash back to World Steam Expo 2011! Just a year ago, Charlie was hosting a podcast called the Related Recap over at Comic Related. World Steam 2011 was his first steampunk convention. It is also the show where Charlie first met Ginny Tonic and Aloysius Fox. On the way home, he recorded a "road show" podcast (a tradition we've carried over here to the Charlie Tonic Hour). In that audio he describes his experiences and his excitement is infectious. If you enjoy this episode, don't miss next Wednesday as we present our own road show discussing this year's Expo!
This week Charlie and Ginny Tonic are joined by Aloysius Fox for a segment where Ginny asks them both about what it was like to walk away from traditional employment. All three dive in for a conversation about the changing nature of work in our culture. Add to that a discussion of a couple great apps and a home brewed masterwork and you have the heart of episode #21. Oh, don't forget the Muppets. Yes, this week we also have Muppets!
For our episode #20, we're cleaning out the vault for some very exciting recent audio. After catching you up on everything that's been going on with a little Discourse Intercourse, we share the full "Victorian Drinking and Drunkenness" panel from the recent Steampunk Empire Symposium. Hosted by Ginny Tonic and frequent show guest Calamity Dawn, this panel was actually sharing samples as it took shape. From there the tables are turned as Shane DeFreest from Cyclopean Ventures interviews Ginny and Charlie for a change. Cap things off with a music segment that asks if "You're Drunk Enough To Sleep With Me Tonight" and you have a very enjoyable episode. Sit back, pour yourself a glass of Fish House Punch and join us once again!
We're back in our element this week and we touch briefly on some new tech that understands you better than you might expect. We also dip back into the 60's and 70's for some classic discussions of some very sexy topics, theorize the existence of the coregasm and settle in for a pineapple upside down cake cocktail that will leave you wanting more. This week we're feeling frisky and you just might thank us by the end. We start by saying "you're welcome" and end with a fond remembrance or two. It's the Charlie Tonic Hour and this week is a very fun show!
Ginny Tonic and Charlie sit down with a live studio audience for an episode recorded during a their panel Sunday at the Steampunk Empire Symposium. The crowd really joins the show this week as stories are told, things are admitted and you get a taste of the celebration which was this past weekend's fun. Many voices you've heard and a few you've only heard discussed make it onto the show and we are VERY pleased to share this one with you. All this and Calamity Dawn even joins of for a drink presentation. More fun than we can into words here so sit back, listen and enjoy.
The Steampunk Empire Symposium may be under two days away, but Charlie and Ginny Tonic are back with a brand new full episode. This podcasting duo gets a bit literary this week as they discuss the film and book Into the Wild then follow that up with the book everyone is talking about 50 Shades of Grey. Things go from philosophical to saucy and back again in this episode. Cap that off with fine rum and a symposium inspired song recommendation and you have a show. Pour yourself a glass and join us for the hour!
Welcome back friends because we have a slam packed show for you today. Charlie and Ginny are off to a comic convention as they report in live from C2E2 (the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo). While they are there, they chat briefly with a publisher, an artist and a webcomic creator. After that, we do a quick roundtable discussion looking back on the last season of Doctor Who. As for our "Bottoms Up" segment, the amazing Molly Wellman returns for a look at her personal history, her incredible bar Japps and drinking culture in Cincinnati. A very fun episode awaits!
We're back and this week there was simply too much audio goodness for a single show. What do we mean? In episode #15, we are joined by the legendary Molly Wellman for a "bottoms up" drink segment to remember. While we had her with us, we also recorded an utterly hip interview which will be part of episode #16 next week. Molly is amazing, but the episode doesn't end there. Along the way, we catch you up on all the fun of the last week, share a discussion about healthy obsessions, unveil our new Charlie Tonic hotline, look ahead to next week's massive comic convention and enjoy a little fruit bat invasion. A solid episode lies ahead. Dive in!
Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I'm very pleased to welcome you to the amazing episode #14 of the Charlie Tonic Hour. What makes it so amazing? We've gone "road show" this week. Listen along as Ginny Tonic and Charlie record while driving 69+ mph down the highway. Restarting a running tradition for Charlie, the road show continues as the two look back on Gem City Comic Con. That conversation leads to them hunting down a friend for an invertiew about women in comics and they wrap it all up with a very, very fine bourbon. All this plus the Pixies featured this week. What more could you want from a show?
This week Ginny Tonic and Charlie dip back into the weekend that was, take a look at zombie culture, discuss a few sexy facts about life and unravel the cocktail known as the Lady Killer. If this were not enough Aloysius Fox joins us with a drink related musical recomendation and the playful inuendo is in full swing. Episode #13 is served up for your enjoyment.
This week we share all the fun stories from last weekend’s Leprechaun’s Wake and tell you about an upcoming legendary gathering that may result in wonton destruction and unbridled inebriation. After that we get serious discussing a court case that has Ginny Tonic considering our legal system. From there we lighten the tone with a discussion of past television series. In the end, we foster our own recovery with Ginny’s remarkable Bloody Mary and close with a spot of music hand delivered from England. For the second week in a row, we bring the episode in right at the 1 hour mark. All this an more in episode #12 of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
This week we're going green. Not so much in the environmental way but more in the Irish way. From one of our primary segments looking at the culture of holidays to our drinks this week, we're looking at the heritage and mistaken beverages of this classicly Americanized holiday (and others). See how the discussions go in totally unexpected directions and how Twitter is actually defending the world once again. All this and more in a brand new (right at an hour) episode of the Charlie Tonic Hour!
We're back with another new episode and this week we feature an in depth look at the band Ford Theatre Reunion. We join them on location at Common Grounds in Lexington, KY for an extended conversation about their history, where they are as a group and what it's like to perform. What evolved was a funny, sometimes quirky, sometimes fascinating and often personal look at the their view from the stage to the audience that you do not want to miss. Along the way, we cover a book, an animated film and a new cocktail, the Delicious Aloysius. All this and a full discussion of what Ginny and Charlie have been up is just click away. Really, who knew that sex drive could be found in a can? Listen and learn.
Hello to you, our wonderful listeners. We return once again with Episode #9 and this week we're serving up a nice little orgasm for your personal pleasure. Well, a discussion of orgasms anyway. Ginny Tonic and Charlie dive directly into the topic after they cover all the events from an amazing (and dare we say quite sexy) little music focused weekend. Think that's enough for one episode? No, we didn't either. In the second half of the show, we're joined by Jimmy and Lola Neilson for our Bottoms Up drink segment. For those of you who may not immediately place the names, Jimmy is lead singer for Doctor Bombay and The Atomic Bachelor Pad and Lola is a founding member of the Cocktail Kittens along with the Charlie Tonic Hour's own Ginny Tonic! We share a Singapore Sling with this far too cool couple then retire to their parlor for a discusion of the band, Cincinnati's music scene and much more. Charlie here...
For a little over a decade, I ran a comic book news website called Comic Related. That site first debuted on October 1st, 2004 at 12:01 AM. It would formally cease daily operations on June 29th, 2015, but during those years there was also a podcast. That show was my first podcast, The Related Recap, and it ran for over 300 episodes.
Primarily focused on interviewing young up and coming comic book creators there were also a lot of stories, some cool news reporting, convention coverage, road show podcasts and no shortage of fun. Ever since the Comic Related site faded from the internet, I’ve wanted those early recordings and interviews to still have a home on the web. With that goal in mind, I started putting the seeds in place for a preservation project here at Charlie Tonic and today we began adding these episodes, one-by-one, to an archive where they will live on within our site. These WILL NOT be released through the standard Charlie Tonic RSS feed, but WILL be available for download through our site.
