Do you want your children to have a normal life with friends but still don't become addicted to technology? We do too! In today's episode, we share our experiences and struggles around digital media and screens with our kids (and not least with ourselves, it's not only the kids that are in a risky situation).

Interesting enough big tech CEO:s are imposing severe restrictions on screen time and tech use for their own children. What do they know that we don't?

We all know the benefits and conveniences of using tech today, from keeping in touch with friends and family to never getting lost by using Google maps. You don't like paying good money for a crappy meal – just look up reviews online, or you got an important e-mail from a client but you are far away from the office – no problem just open your phone and read it. Things like this we have all learned to appreciate and take for granted.

How about the downsides of excessive screen time and tech use? We all know people that can't keep their hands off their phones, people that seem distant and consumed with another world - just take a trip on a subway and look around and you'll find tons of people consumed by their phones.

Can there be a middle ground, is their such a thing as a middle ground? Listen and find out our thoughts! Use them as a starting point to create an intentional screen approach for you and your children.

Bonus fact (promised in the episode):

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that children ages eight to 10 spend an average of six hours per day in front of a screen, kids ages 11 to 14 spend an average of nine hours per day in front of a screen, and youth ages 15 to 18 spend an average of seven-and-a-half hours per day in front of a screen. What to do with allowance! Ever wondered how to teach your child to have a healthy relationship with money. In today's episode, we share our experience with allowance and different approaches to it. We use a system partly inspired by Dave Ramsey, don't miss his books for inspiration to better handle money (see links below). Teach your kid to earn, spend, save, and give now and spare them from big unnecessary backsets in the future that will make you cry. By giving small responsibilities and decisions about money you invite your kids to grow and develop a perspective on their wants and wishes and how to handle themselves better once they are on their own. We teach the envelope system to help your children in practice stick to the budget and discuss how to make the child understand that he or she needs to save for bigger purchases and set aside money for giving to charity needs. However, equally important is to learn how to spend money in a healthy manner, learning to enjoy what they are actually buying.

We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts about how you have done it!

Struggling with sulky or grumpy kids? Do you instead want a family culture of inclusion and heartfelt appreciation? In today's episode, John and Hanna from The Art of Familing share their experiences with teaching kids, and themself, how to smile and how to give and receive sincere appreciation without feeling fake. Listen to learn more.

Doesn't a smiling come naturally for you or you have never learned how to give appreciation? Well, that was at least the case for me, before. And as you know kids do as you do, not what you say them to do, the irritating part is that they will imitate your bad behaviors but the god thing is that you can change yourself and the children will follow. Always remember to implement and practice if you want to change something, an idea must be crystallized in the real world to make a change. When you read or hear about some great advice implement it! Otherwise, it is only a loose idea.

A smile and a heartfelt appreciation can turn around a day, it boosts self-confidence as well as compassion for others. That's something I want to teach my kids. I say I because it has been an upward hill for me, my wife is more of a natural in the area. However, we did some simple exercises for all of us and the results have been great so far – one step closer to a HAPPY family. Listen and get inspired on what you can change in your family to have more smiles and to give and receive sincere appreciation. Get rid of the sulkiness, sarcasm, and borderline mean stuff, it's better to enjoy and be happy.

Happy Familing,

/John & Hanna

In today's episode, John and Hanna from The Art of Familing share their experiences with The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. For about 6 months they have actively tried to implement a routine that the world's most successful people are already doing, but having kids around creates challenges. Listen to learn more.

Hal's mantra is – If you win the morning you win the day, something we totally agree upon. Wouldn't you like to start the day at your best, appreciating the moment and inspire others? However, having kids you might need to tweak things a little to fit your particular situation. The important thing to remember is that the system and habits you put in place are supposed to support you and lift you up, not make you feel like a failure and never succeeding what you set out to do. Do not start your day like that, you will feel miserable in the end. In today's episode, we share how we have implemented the miracle morning ourselves, what has worked and what has not for us. Listen and learn how you can set up your own Miracle Morning while having kids in the house. Win the day for yourself, securing a better and deeper relationship with yourself and your loved ones. Be an inspiration!

Today John & Hanna from The Art Of Familing Podcast discuss the rule "Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them" from Jordan B Peterson's book 12 Rules For Life – an antidote for chaos. They touched on this topic in episode #4 about the most stupid question to ask a misbehaving child, here you will get a quick and relevant introduction to Jordan B Peterson's perspective on raising a child. As always John & Hanna relates personal experiences such as how they almost failed to bring up their first child using Non-Violent-Communication. Do not do that! If you instead adopt some common sense rules and attitudes you can create a more stable family making your children better fit for the world to come as well as create a deeper relationship with them.
