In this week's episode I share my chat with Edel who talks me though her three birth stories. Edel gave birth to her first little girl in a hospital as planned. She then gave birth unexpectedly at home with her second girl. Although this wasn't the plan, Edel was so calm as she created the perfect environment to lean into labour and enjoy the experience as much has she could. She was supported by her husband as the ambulance made its way to her home. She then decided to opt for a planned homebirth on her third pregnancy. Another gorgeous story shared.

Thanks Edel

In this week's episode I share my chat with Sarah who talks me through her two birth stories. Sarah gave birth to her first little girl at 31 weeks gestation. Despite the worry and stress the birth of her daughter was really positive with the support of a medical team that continued to communicate with her. She then shares her second experience which again she loved but unfortunately she felt the support wasn't there with her midwife. Sarah also shares life in the early days of motherhood.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with @kate.canavan who talks me through her three pregnancies and two births. Kate opted for private care with her first pregnancy. She shares her experience which wasn’t one she expected in terms of support from her HCP and those around her during the birth of her son.

Kate made the decision to give birth to her second baby in the comfort of her own home. She laboured with the support of her midwife and husband but the decision was made to transfer to hospital.

She gave birth in hospital to another healthy little boy, this time her experience was thankfully much more positive.

In this next episode I share my chat with Claire who talks me through her two birth experiences. She was induced at 42 weeks with her first little boy and underwent and emergency c-section to bring her second baby into the world safely. At the latter stages of her second pregnancy it was discovery her baby was surrounded by a significant amount of fluid which led doctors to make the decision to bring her little boy into the world at 32 weeks.

Thankfully the diagnosis wasn’t as severe as originally suspected but her little boy did spend some time in NICU.

Claire also talks about her experience with fertility treatment, multiple early pregnancy losses and so much more that I know many of you will relate to.

In this next episode I share my chat with Emma who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son. I vividly remember received Emmas email last year, she told me she suffered with PNA & PND but was ok the road to recovery. Although Emma was in a good place at the time she wasn’t aware of how tough the following months would be.

Emma was diagnosed with gestational diabetes but managed this with both diet and exercise. She then talks me through her induction and the birth of her son. She admits she didn’t feel the rush of love that is spoken about so much but in reality not always felt.

I truly appreciate how far Emma brought us into the depts of her depression. I think this honesty is so powerful as I know she isn’t alone in her experience. I do want to highlight she shares feeling suicidal thoughts at the height of her depression.

As Emma said ‘if anyone is listening, you are worth trying to get better for, always!’

In this episode I share my chat with Aideen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Aideen is a nurse, midwife and most recently and IBCLC so it's really nice to hear her perspective. She gave birth to her first son in hospital quiet quickly after an induction. Both she and those supporting her were surprised at how quickly she progress from 4cm to baby arriving into the world. We then chat through her second pregnancy after overcoming a tough postpartum period through early Covid with very little supports and the isolation that so many of us felt with new borns in our arms. Aideen decided to go down the homebirth route second time around supported by the Domino midwives. Similar to her first birth Aideen little man came quickly out into the world with one expulsive push.

In this episode I share my chat with Shauna who talks me through her four pregnancies and three births. The birth of her first son was incredibly tough resulting in a due to the lack of support and communication within the hospital. Her son was birthed with the assistance of a forceps which hugely impacted her postpartum healing process for a number of reasons. Although the care within the hospital was poor, she was supported by a midwife for a number of days when she returned home. This is where she received the TLC she needed to help her establish breastfeeding and start the road to recovery. Shauna also suffered two early pregnancy losses which she shared previously in depth when we chatted on the "Between Us" episode linked.

Shauna' second experience was just so beautiful and poles apart from her first, right down to her very first interaction in labour.....the taxi driver!

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Ruth who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter. Ruth discovered she was pregnant while living in Japan, moved to the UK and later back home to Ireland when she was 22 weeks pregnant. A busy time!

She invested lots of time preparing for birth from attending pregnancy yoga, antenatal classes and also hypnobirthing which played a huge roll on the day of her daughters birth.

She also shares more on her experience with breastfeeding at the end of the podcast which I think is important to hear.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Julie who talks me through her one pregnancy and there birth of her son. Julie's experience is tough to hear in parts as both her recovery from a physical and emotional perspective wasn't an easy road. She was admitted to hospital twice in the early postpartum days, shares her experience with breastfeeding and importantly, chats openly about suffering with PND. Thankfully Julie sought the help she needed but I think the action she took to ensure she got the care that suited her specifically is an important part of out conversation.

In this next episode I share my chat with Sarah Louise who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her little girl. Sarah Louise talks openly about her 10 year relationship coming to an end in the early weeks of her pregnancy. She shares how she not only navigated pregnancy during Covid but also coping with the unexpected end to such a huge chapter of her life.

She had a really positive induction and was supported by some incredible midwives and doctors throughout labour and birth. Sarah Louise also speaks so highly of a midwife in particular who gave her the time she needed while learning how to feed her baby.

Later in the episode she shares aspects of her life which I know will be valuable to others who have experienced the grief of a relationship breakdown.

In this weeks episode I share Erin’s story who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son Jorge. Erin completely opened up sharing so much of her life throughout her pregnancy. She chats about the reality of an unplanned pregnancy, how she felt sharing her news with her family and how she was supported by the mental health services in the maternity hospital to help her through anxiety.

Throughout Erin’s story she speaks so fondly of specific people from midwives that supported her at antenatal appointments. A taxi driver that didn’t charge her fare and walked her to the door of the hospital. A midwife that stayed with her throughout Jorges birth and another who came to Erin’s bedside every two hours to help her feed and just check-in.

Erin also shares her breastfeeding experience which only recently came to and end after nearly two years.

Thanks Erin x

Delighted to be back in action after a few weeks off. I have so many birth stories to share with you and grateful to each and everyone of you who support the pod here, it’s honestly keeps the podcast afloat.

In this episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Kathleen welcomed her first baby, little Charlie, nearly three years ago with the support of some incredible midwives who she speaks so fondly of. She gave birth to Charlie vaginally after being induced at full term.

She then goes on to share her twin pregnancy which was thankfully uneventful and the plan was to give birth vaginally. After labouring for some time Kathleen was brought to theatre to bring her babies into the world by C-section . Parts of her story are quite distressing from complications throughout surgery to their care in those early hours.

I also really want to highlight that Kathleen did avail of the services of the hospital to help resolve her birth trauma. Thanks to the decision she made to do this she is in a place to revisit these memories. She also lodged a complaint with the hospital wasn’t happy with the response so took her complaint further which Is important to highlight.

Thanks Kathleen x

In this episode I share my two postpartum experiences, each very different. I chat about entering the unknown, motherhood! I share my very first experience from those very early days which were just shocked the shit out of me (no preparation!), being diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 4 months postpartum to pregnancy after loss when Oliver was 12 months old. I then share my second story which was amazing in parts but also blighted with crippling anxiety which was later diagnosed as PNA. I reckon I suffered from PNA with Oliver too but just wasn't aware. I sought help and can honesty say it was one of the kindest things I did for myself, I put myself first and as a result I have gained so much.

I then share my constant struggle with deciding to stay as a family of four. I'm super honest here as it's still very raw and hard to process although not as hard as it was. I know many of you are currently at the same phase of life deciding whether or not to close the chapter on pregnancy and adding to your family for a number of reasons, for me it has been the most challenging season yet.

I'm so so grateful for my beautiful family!

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Gina who talks me through her four pregnancies and three very different births. At 9 weeks gestation Gina suffered early pregnancy loss with her first pregnancy. Soon after Gina conceived again, shares the details surrounding the birth of her first child. Her experience wasn't one that she envisioned which impacted those early postpartum days as a first time mother. Gina then shares two further vaginal births both unmedicated but each very different.

Gina put so much time into preparing for her most recent birth attending various classes and availing of supports from hypnobirthing, using @gentlebirthofficial and @pamjdpilates was she remarked was ‘life changing’. At 34 weeks Gina started to bleed so was admitted to hospital until baby arrived at 37 weeks.

Thankfully all was well and got to feel that oxytocin rush!

In this weeks episode I share my chat ith Maria who talks me through her two pregnancies and birth. Maria discovered she was pregnant in her early 20's after a short relationship. She shares how she navigated life from keeping her pregnancy hidden for nearly 18 weeks to adapting to such a huge change in her life during those early months of motherhood. She suffered birth trauma in her first experience with little or no support from both her partner at the time and also the medical team she was surrounded by.

Marias second birth experience was such a positive one for many reason. She was supported by her husband Paddy, midwives who wanted her to have a positive birth and most importantly she prepared in so many ways which I will let you hear for yourself.

In this episode I share my chat with Gráinne who talks me through her three pregnancies and two births. Both of Gráinnes boy were brought into the world by Caesarean birth (one emergency and under general anaesthetic) but each very different. Gráinne suffered an early pregnancy loss with her second pregnancy. It was later discovered after she underwent a DNC that she had a partial molar pregnancy which she shares more detail about.

As Gráinne shared her second birth story I could see this huge smile growing on her face, you can actually hear it in her voice. I love seeing that emotion and how powerful revisiting a story can be.

Enjoy and thank you @river_skincare for sharing your story

In this next episode I chat to Rachael who shares her two pregnancies and births. Rachael who is a maternity care advocate amongst other things shares her experience in detail from suffering with HG throughout the early stages of both pregnancies, attending appointments alone and navigating the restrictions as she was in the height of labour with her second daughter.

So much in this episode! I know Rachael is happy for you to reach out if you have any Q’s relating to any of the topics brought up within our chat.

In this next episode I share my chat with Michelle who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son. Michelle suffered from anxiety very early on in her pregnancy that crippled her everyday, impacting her sleep and general ability to function. She was completely consumed with worry, fear and guilt to mention just a few emotions. She talks me through the birth of her son which wasn't what she hoped for leaving her in a very vulnerable place. Michelles son was admitted to hospital at 12 days, another hugely traumatic experience.

She then talks me through her experience with PND which is such an honest account of how tough life can be for those who suffer on a daily basis.

This episode might not be suitable for everyone but I know it will also help many who are in the depths of anxiety, recovering from birth trauma and or are living with PND.

Before I share details of Celine’s story I want to mention that parts of our conversation surround stillbirth. I know lots of you won’t be in a position to listen to an incredibly difficult story but from speaking to you, I also know many of you need to hear Celine’s story.

In this next episode I share my chat with Stephanie who talks me through the birth of her little girl Morgan. I previously spoke to Steph in EP37, she had a planned homebirth and welcomed her first girl Ada with the support of @midwife_aine who was also present for her most recent birth.

Stephs pregnancy was pretty uneventful until the 30 week mark. She caught Covid. She was admitted to hospital for one week due to an unstable lie. She was blighted with severe pelvic girdle pain and she was diagnosed with polyhdramnios (waters measured fine in last scan).

Thankfully all worked out in the end and she birth her little girl at home as planned. She was supported once again by her husband, her midwives and @globebabydoula who she speaks so highly of.

This week I share my chat with Jess who talks me through the birth of her three girls. I have to say, Jess bared all and shared so much of her journey over the past 8 years. At the age of 20 she discovered she was pregnant with her first little girl who was born via caesarean birth and later diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder. She talks me through those first few weeks of Georgias life who is now a happy, healthy 8 year old. In the podcast show notes I have linked a Facebook page Jess created to shared Georgias story, again a very honest account of their life and some gorgeous pictures too.

Jess shares so much more, two birth stories, both vaginal and one unmedicated. She chats about early pregnancy loss, her struggle with accepting an unplanned pregnancy and also gender disappointment.

There is no new episode but I’m re-releasing EP92 as a nod to Pride month. This conversation is so important, it highlights what’s possible, a family for same sex couples. I just sat back and enjoyed watching Katie & Jo reminisce over the birth over their son, Sonny.

They were supported by their doula @pamjdpilates and really invested in birth preparation. They share some truly beautiful moments. Our conversation didn’t end there but in time Jo and I will continue our chat which we will no doubt share with you all.

I listen to so many different podcasts, I always listen to each episode more than once as I hear something new each time. I think you should do just that with EP92 @joga.yoga_ @katieverbo

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jennifer who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son Jimmy. Jen was induced at 37 weeks  as they suspected her son was measuring small. Jena water were artificially broken by a midwife, it was then discovered she has chord prolapses. Within moments Jen was on all fours being whisked to theatre for an emergency caesarean birth. Jen woke up soon after feeling her stomach and realising quickly her boy was born. It all happened so quickly, far too quick to process.

Jen and her son spent some time in hospital recovering but thankfully both made a full recovery. Jen shares so much more in her story from leaving the hospital without her baby for the first time to processing her experience.

Jen recently qualified as a hypnobirthing instructor and is about to embark on her teaching journey. Thanks @dublin_does_hypnobirthing for sharing your story

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Aisling (@mellow_mindfulness) who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Olivia. Within this episode you will hear such amazing examples of midwife care. One midwife in particular stood out, she ensured Aisling was cared for when she wasn’t receiving the attention she needed.

Olivia’s birth was such a positive experience and as a someone who meditates Aisling definitely tapped into hypnobirthing tools to help her through labour.

Something this amazing midwife did has stayed with me. She knew Aisling is close to her mother who lives in Ireland and couldn’t be present due to Covid. The midwife lifted up her mask momentarily, hugged Aisling and said “This is from your mother!” Goosebumps even writing this.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. After Kathleen underwent cancer treatment she feared her fertility would be impacted but thankfully she concieved her little boy quite quickly. An uneventful pregnancy took a drastic turn of events as she was diagnosed with Pre-eclampsia. Her little boy was born via Caesarean birth at just 30 weeks weighing under 2kg.

Kathleen went on to conceive again and spent a lot of time researching the possibility of pre-eclampsia second time round. She decided the best decision for her and baby was to opt for a Caesarean birth as she noticed returning symptoms such as a severe headache in the very late stages of her pregnancy. She wanted her baby in her arms and she got just that, her little girl!

A story many of our premie parents will relate to. Kathleen later mentioned the @irish_neonatal_health_alliance were a huge support to her as a mother to a premie baby.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jennifer who talks me through her two pregnancies and three births. Jennifers experiences were so different, she felt fearful and a complete lack of control throughout her first labour. In her words she felt  defeated after birthing her little girl which is a feeling she carried throughout her transition into early motherhood. Jennifer then shares the moment she discovered she was expecting twins, the shock but also her decision to educate herself as much as possible. She truly gave everything to ensuring she was ready for whatever outcome lay ahead. She birthed her boys vaginally and unmedicated, an incredible birth story!

I love Jennifer honesty in this episode.

This week I’m sharing my chat with Tjarda who talks me through her journey to motherhood from discovering she was pregnant at 19 to having the most incredible support bringing each of her babes into the world. Tjardas experience in the hospital gave me goosebumps. She was surrounded by women who showed her respect, compassion and love. Her experience with birth the second time around was similar, nothing by support from everyone she was surrounded by.

On both occasions she stayed in her postpartum room as much as possible for those 40 days allowing her body to heal and deepen that connection with baby. Again she was supported by her family and community to enable this.

A really beautiful episode, I said very little just listened intently. No doubt you will too!

In this next episode I share my chat with Brenda who talks me through her two birth experiences and one early pregnancy loss. Brenda’s perspective as someone who is hard of hearing is an important listen. She talks me through suffering from what she calls “deaf anxiety” worrying that she will miss her name being called at appointments, can she lip read or can she understand everything she has been told. For this reason along with others she opted for homebirths with both of her babes. She received incredible support from her homebirth midwife when she was transferred to hospital on her first baby but unfortunately due to restrictions the same midwife couldn’t be present when she was transferred with her second. Her husband was by her side through each labour and birth. She shares so much more in this episode too including her breastfeeding journey and suffering early pregnancy loss.

Months ago I tried to transcribe all past episodes to ensure the deaf community could enjoy each of your stories, this episode has lit a fire under me. Brenda’s story will also be available in text on the website as will every future episode.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Sinead, this is a long episode but I found it hard to edit any of our chat as I felt each stage of her journey to motherhood was so important to hear. She was diagnosed with endometriosis after years of excruciating periods and uncomfortable situations. When the time felt right, Sinead along with the support of her fertility doctor discovered she was pregnant. Many highs and lows were to follow!

Her labour and birth story is certainly not linear. She met some incredibly support people who she remembers fondly and most definitely aided in helping her through a particularly difficult experience. Unfortunately she encountered others that are etched in her memory for the wrong reasons.

This episode is hard to listen to in places but there is also lots of laughter in there too.

In this next episode I share my chat with Yasmine who talks me through her two very different birth experiences. Yasmines experience in hospital birthing her little girl wasn’t one where she felt very supported for various reasons. Her little girl arrived into the world making her presence known with her cry but Yasmine didn’t feel that immediate rush of love. She was exhausted, unsure as to what just happened and needed some tlc which she received when they returned to the comfort of their own bed.

18 months later Yasmine felt she was ready to add to their family once again. She talks me through her decision to have a homebirth and the reason they rented an Airbnb to ensure this was a possibility. For Yasmine, this birth was a healing experience and she shares moments such as feeling her cervix open which I will never tire of hearing.

In this next episode I chat to Mairead who talks me through her two pregnancies and homebirths. She chats about sickness in early pregnancy, diagnosis of a haematoma and thankfully the ok for her homebirth at 32 weeks.

She shares the moments her daughter was born after a short labour and her fierce first latch that she remembers vividly.

We then chat about her second pregnancy which was similar to her first in terms on sickness in the early months. Mairead once again decided to have her baby at home and talks me through her sons birth.

She suffered a prolapse after her first baby which caused her distress. Mairead said something which I think is so true “Prolapse isn’t just of the body, it’s prolapse of the mind too”!

You previously asked for episodes that focus on the postpartum period of a woman’s life and this episode is just that. Sinead previously shared her five pregnancies, four births, early pregnancy loss and her experience with sepsis in EP68 Listen here!.

This time we chat about life after each baby especially the expectation we have before our first born comes into the world. Sinead shares how she coped each day, accepting that some days (most) you just do what you need whatever is necessary in order to get through the haze. She also shares how she felt retuning to work in the early days versus her decision to utilise childcare after her fourth baby to really lean into that fourth trimester.

If you would like to hear more episodes like this bonus chat please get in touch and let me know. Our Monday birth stories are a permanent fixture but I would love to hear your feedback on this one.

In this next episode I share my chat with @fairy.quad.mother who talks me through the loss of her first son Dylan, coping with grief, the overwhelming need to get pregnant once again and the spontaneous conception of her quadruplet’s. The first 20 mins of our chat is incredibly tough to hear as Lorraine shares the loss of her son Dylan. Within the episode intro I will give you the exact moment to tune in if you aren’t in a place to listen to such heartbreaking story. In saying this, I know Lorraine opening up will bring comfort to others who have suffered such profound grief.

We then chat about the spontaneous conception of her four babes. Lorraine discovered she was growing two boys and two girls who were perfectly happy inside their mums tummy until the end of the second trimester. They arrived into the world via Caesarean birth welcomed by a room of 32 very excited medical professionals all wanting to be present for such an amazing moment.

To think Lorraine’s body grew four babies simultaneously, four hearts, four beautiful minds and obviously I have to mention four gorgeous placentas. Just wow!!

In this next episode I share my chat with Brana who talks me through the birth of her little girl Evie and her very recent pregnancy loss.

After undergoing testing due to concerns following a routine 12 week scan, Brana and Ross received the news that their little girl had Trisomy 21 also known as Down Syndrome. She shares much more surrounding Evie’s diagnosis which I know many other parents can relate too. Brana then chats through her induction and the decision to bring Evie into the world via emergency caesarean birth. We chat about the early weeks of Evie’s life and how as partners and parents Brana and Ross support one another.

We then chat about pregnancy loss at 10 weeks gestation. Brana mentions this pregnancy “kept us warm” throughout an incredibly tough period of Evie’s life. She also shares some special moments after losing their Bear which I will let you hear for yourself (last picture 🌹)

Honoured to share Branas story as a nod to World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March. Thanks Brana

In this next episode I share my chat with Pam, Phil and of course the star of the show Teddy. Pam shares many aspects of her pregnancy from coping with pregnancy after loss (EP40 Pam shared her previous birth experiences) gestational diabetes, extensive preparation 🙌and the birth of her little boy Teddy at home.

I was joined by Phil her love, her husband and an incredible support. I adore chatting with couples, I love watching them reminisce over such an intimate experience. It’s an honour to be invited into such a sacred space as they open up and chat.

Although Pam is incredibly well informed and constantly researching evidence based material to ensure she is upto speed, she still invested the time in herself to prepare for Teddy’s birth. I really love that, below I have shared a list of resources Pam shared with me which might be useful to you, including the Anne Summer Vinyl sheets

In this next episode I share my chat with Amy who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son Cooper. Amy read books, attended classes, watched YouTube videos and listened to podcasts as part of her preparation for birth and motherhood. She spent time educating herself to ensure she knew the risks and benefits of various interventions.

Amy shares her positive induction story and the moment her son Cooper came into the world. Twelve days later everything changed Amy and her husband rushed Cooper to hospital after reacting to a gut feeling. Cooper was diagnosed with Meningitis, thankfully he made a full recovery after two weeks in hospital.

From her level of preparation, ability to adapt to change and confidence in her decisions as mother to her son at such an early stage, I just think Amy’s story is amazing!

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jill who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Charlotte. Jill really had to focus on tracking her ovulation, the ovulation sticks (as with many of you) weren’t helping her much so she focused on natural indicators too.

She put a lot of time into preparation and stayed active throughout her pregnancy including teaching yoga. I think an important part of Jill’s story is where she chats about passing her estimated due date and just wanting to meet her baby. Although this is the case for all of us, some of us find those last few weeks incredibly hard. Getting to the stage where you wonder if you will ever meet your baby is a real thing, I felt it!!

Of course, little Charlotte was born Jill finally got to meet her daughter

Enjoy & thanks Jill ❤️

In this episode I share my chat with Aisling who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. I recently asked if you wanted me to keep conversations surrounding early motherhood in the podcast and there was a resounding yes! I have done just that with this episode, I know so many of you will relate to some if not all of what Aisling speaks about.

She chats about the initial overwhelm when discovering she was pregnant, her preparation for birth, her experiences (so similar but different in many ways), early motherhood, breastfeeding and much more. Honestly, I just sat back drinking a cup of and listened to her speak. So relatable, as I say in the podcast there will be heads nodding away on Monday morning as you hear Aisling’s episode.

In this next episode I share my chat with Jane who talks me through her two pregnancy’s and births. Jane’s first baby was brought into the world via emergency c-section as she went into labour at 32 weeks. She thought she could feel a cord prolapse but infact it was her little boys foot!

Her second baby also came into the world early at 36 weeks but thankfully she had an experience much closer to what she hoped for, a vaginal birth.

She shares her struggles with breastfeeding which led to her recently qualifying as an IBCLC which I personally think is amazing.

Thank you for sharing your story @bainne.mama and congratulations on passing those exams!

In this next episode I chat to Nicola who talks me through her spontaneous triplet pregnancy. Nicola and her husband attended an early scan when they discovered they were expecting twins, they left that appointment shocked as many of us would. They later attended their hospital scan around the 3 month mark when they saw a third little one on the monitor. So much changed from that moment on!

Nicola was monitored closely in hospital from the latter stages of her second trimester. Thankfully her three babes arrived safely into the world via Caesarean birth after an uncomplicated pregnancy that was initially uncertain.

This episode is the first of many I will be asking my guest to chat further about their postpartum experience. Everything Nicola shares will relate to each of you from sleep deprivation, the fog lifting and much more

EP92 - Jo & Katie, IVF, Doula Support, Induction, Unmedicated Positive Birth

In this next episode I share my chat with Jo and her wife Katie. I love chatting with couples, watching their faces as they speak about one of the most significant milestones in their lives is pretty special.

I wanted to speak to a same sex couple for so long, the wait was so worth it. This is such an important conversation and demonstrates becoming parents as an LGBT couple is possible. They chat about making the decision to become parents, their IVF journey, pregnancy and Sonny’s incredible birth.

Together they invested so much time preparing for this huge life event that was ahead of them, the birth of their baby. From hypnobirthing, breastfeeding classes, inviting @pamjdpilatesdoula to support them, acupuncture, books and YouTube videos, they left no stone unturned.

In this next episode I share my chat with Laura who talks me through her two experiences with birth. Laura not only shares her two birth stories but she also chats about other aspects of early motherhood and pregnancy too. The birth of her first little girl definitely wasn’t what Laura expected which she feels contributed to some tough moments as a first time mother.

Laura was diagnosed with pregnancy depression while expecting her second baby. She chats about her symptoms, support and how “the lights were turned back on” as a result of receiving the right treatment. Laura was also supported by Jen Crawford Co-founder of @doulacareireland who was at the end of the phone anytime she needed. She changed her mindset, used the BRAIN acronym and told herself she would enjoy this

Laura’s daughter was admitted to NICU after a diagnosis of sepsis and a urinary infection. She talks us through those first few days, her stay in NICU and when they eventually took her home.

Thank you Laura for sharing as much as you did ❤️

In this next episode I share my chat with Katie who talks me through her journey to motherhood. Katie suffered loss, experienced trauma due to an emergency caesarean birth, underwent two positive elective caesarean births and received a PCOS diagnosis.

There is so much more in Katie's story but I will let her tell you everything in between from being admitted to hospital for 6 weeks whilst pregnant with her first boy, each of her breastfeeding journeys and constant issues with her blood pressure. Katie also shares that although her first baby is aged 7, she is only now recognising how traumatic his birth was and has sought the help of a councllor who helped her realised this. Another message within this weeks episode for those of you that might need to hear it.

Thank you Katie!

I just adored listening to Fiona’s three births. Her first homebirth was 10 years ago when we knew very little about the service and her most recent homebirth was in 2018.

Her first babe arrived at home by the fire in the birth pool, her second on the landing as her little girl listened to her mama from her bed and her third beneath a tree with the sun on her skin in the arms of her husband.

Fiona also shared her experience with early pregnancy loss during the pandemic. As a family they took the time to honour their baby that didn’t make it earthside and I really feel there is such an important message within her story. Very often families who experience early pregnancy loss don’t feel they can fully grieve or that such a loss even justifies grief in the eyes of certain people. Fiona’s family grieved, buried their baby under an Evergreen tree and wrote letters to their little one. So so important to allow yourself to feel how you need to feel!

Thank you Fiona!

Feb 21 - Georgina, One Pregnancy & Birth I love this episode and I’m so fond of Georgina.

In this episode I share my chat with Georgina who talks me through her experience with pregnancy and the birth of her little girl Rua. She had such a group of supportive women surrounding her which is so beautiful. They guided her through her preparation into motherhood and in those weeks following Rua's arrival.

George wasn't opposed to having an epidural but in the end she brought her little girl into the world with the aid of her 900 song playlist, a husband who she recalls reminded her of a gym coach "breathe in, out, in, out" and the presence of two midwives who were the perfect pairing.

A gorgeous light hearted chat about an experience described as "wild but good"

EP 16 - Two Pregnancies, Hospital Births, Triplet Pregnancy, Caesarean Birth

In this episode I chat to Ali @alidee_g_plus3 who talks me through the births of her four kids, Georgia, Ted, Lenny & Bruce. Ali's first experience with birth was tough with a difficult few weeks recovery. She discusses the importance of being honest with women about what to expect in the pregnancy and also what our bodies go through in those few weeks after baby arrives. She then talks us through the shock of discovering they were pregnancy with triplet boys after suffering a miscarriage just months prior. She was prepared so thoroughly by the hospital teams and highlights how available so many services are if you simply ask. Ali then talks us through the birth of her boys in detail which again was tough but she felt so prepared in comparison to her first birth. In this episode I chat to Catherine (Play at Home Mammy)ho talks me through her three very different births. On her first pregnancy, second stage of labour was so quick with her little man entering the world swiftly. She talks us through a rough few weeks of breastfeeding and the support she availed of to help her alleviate the constant discomfort.

She had a C-section with her second pregnancy due to the presence of meconium in her waters and also inconsistencies inconsistencies on the monitor readings with baby.

Throughout her third pregnancy she was crippled with SPD and unfortunately needed the support of crutches in the latter stages of her final trimester. She was determined to avoid another section and wanted her VBAC but her little lady was a bit of a trapeze artist and presented breech. Her section date was set but Molly gave her mum what she wanted in the end.

Despite restrictions in the hospital Catherine said her experience was "just perfect!" An episode heaving with useful info for expecting women.

This week from Monday - Friday I will re-release episodes from the early days which I think will be a nice distraction from life at the minute.

Emma & Mikey - Two Pregnancies & Births, Hospital Birth, Induction, Homebirth

In my first couples interview, way back in August 2020 I spoke to Emma & Mikey about the birth of their two boys. Emma’s first experience with birth wasn’t necessarily what she hoped for. She initially wished for a homebirth but the timing just wasn’t right, they were in the middle of building their forever home. Emma chats me through her induction and the birth of her first son.

We then chat about her second birth experience at home with the support of her husband Mikey and midwife @midwife_aine. I just adore hearing the perspective of a birth partner or someone who has supported a women throughout her pregnancy.

So many of you have already enjoyed listening to this episode and I hope many more of you do.

Paula then brings me through her third experience with labour and birth and why the decision was made to bring her little boy into the world via emergency caesarean birth. She chats about the level of preparation she did throughout her third pregnancy both reading and using @gentlebirthofficial tracks to focus on what lay ahead. In this next episode I share my chat with Caroline who talks me through her journey to conceiving twins. We chat about infertility, IVF, discovering she was pregnant and also early pregnancy.

Although Caroline truly wanted a vaginal birth, at 32 weeks she surrendered to the fact she would likely birth her babies via Caesarean section due to breech presentation. Her pregnancy took a dramatic turn 5 weeks from the twins birth date leading to an emergency section.

Caroline was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome which is a life-threatening pregnancy complication usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia. Thankfully, mother & baby recovered well as delivery of baby is ultimately the treatment for this syndrome.

Caroline was surrounded by such a supportive team of midwives, consultants & anaesthesiologists. They made an incredibly tough situation a little easier by the overall TLC she received.

ps The second picture is their first nap together while a midwife looked on. So so special!

I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling fully invested in Sinead’s pregnancy. I have followed her journey from the very beginning feeling so incredibly sad each time she suffered loss and joy with trepidation when she conceived once again.

To see her bump grow was just amazing and hearing the excitement in her voice at the end of our chat was gorgeous. In our chat Sinead said “It’s a boy if I go early and a girl if I make it to my section date”……

Sinead welcomed her beautiful, blonde, bouncing little boy on Monday. To be continued…..

In this next episode I share my chat with Luca who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Luca was frequently scanned and checked for GD throughout her pregnancy with some concerns that baby was measuring big. Thankfully her little girl was born at a very healthy 7+ pounds via an unmedicated vaginal birth.

At 11 months postpartum, Luca discovered she was pregnant with baby number two. Her little girl was brought into the world via emergency Caesarean birth due to facial presentation. In this next episode I share my chat with Doris who birthed her first baby in New Zealand. She talks us through the care system there, being induced and her boy being brought into the world via Caesarean birth.

We then chat about her second pregnancy which although was planned still came as a surprise. Doris really wanted her VBAC (Vaginal birth after Caesarean) and that’s exactly how her little girl came into the world. She needed assistance during the final stages and later further assistance to ensure her uterus was contracting after baby was born. This part of her story is difficult to hear. Thankfully she recovered well and returned home to cocoon with her little family.

I will let her fill in the gaps….. her amazing midwife @midwife_aine arrived to the new addition and showered her with the care and attention every mum needs for two weeks.

I reached out to Aoife, founder of @womenshealthdublin to share her knowledge and fill us all in on the importance of going for even one assessment. We chat about the assessment itself, antenatal and postnatal pelvic floor awareness, correctly returning to fitness and using pelvic floor trainers.

Below I have linked a website which you can use to find a women’s health physio in your area. If you can, please take the time to go for an assessment. Various health insurance providers cover part of the cost so make sure to check. Aoife made such a valid point, we need to sort these things now to stop us from suffering even more so in later years.

This week I share my chat with Niamh who talks me through her pregnancy and the birth of her little boy Jack. Niamh and her husband Barry discovered they had unexplained infertility after a long period of trying to conceive naturally. After attending a clinic and undergoing IVF treatment they were so thrilled to receive the news they were expecting their first baby.

Niamh immediately went into birth prep mode, reading books, watching birth videos, looking at birth images online and they attended a hypnobirthing class very early on in her pregnancy. She also maintained her fitness and continued exercising just days before her sons birth.

Niamh was induced at 40+11 which wasn’t what she wanted but her preparation paid off in such a huge way. Her husband Barry also put the prep in which showed as he entered the delivery suite eager to create the atmosphere Niamh needed. She talks me through her birth preferences list along with so much more. We chatted for hours so I did my best to give you the best of our conversation.

Enjoy and thanks Niamh ❤️

In this next episode I share my conversation with Dairíona who talks me through her experience of pregnancy and labouring alone thoughout COVID restrictions. Listening to Dairíonas story in many parts is difficult and for this reason I would consider her episode to be of a sensitive nature.

She talks me through conception, her various hospital visits due to concerns of baby’s movement, a bleed and also erratic blood pressure. Her experience was very mixed with some medical staff being nothing but supportive but she also encountered others whom she thought could have shown her more compassion.

She was induced and later, her little girl arrived into the world via Cesarean birth due to the presence of meconium in her waters. They shared some time together soaking in their little girl before her partner was asked to leave. Being alone once again with limited support took so much away from what should have been a very special time.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Anita who is both a birth & postpartum doula. I love hearing the perspective of someone who works in the world of maternity care. She chats me through early pregnancy, preparation for birth and how she felt in anticipation of giving birth considering she supported women for years prior to her own pregnancy.

Anita was respected and supported during labour and birth with the midwives reading her birth preferences thoroughly ensuring she got the birth she wanted. Although her labour was long and intense she birth her little boy unmedicated which was her wish. She also speaks of her breastfeeding experience and how initially she wanted to feed him for 12 months but she is now breastfeeding a toddler.

If you are expecting your little one I would definitely take a few notes, birth preferences are invaluable. Thanks @anitapetry ❤️

In this week’s episode I share my chat with Nicole who spoke to me about her pregnancy & the birth of her little boy Brody. We chat about how she felt at various stages throughout her pregnancy and her early signs of labour.

After hours of labour the decision was made to birth little Brody via emergency C-section due to meconium in her waters and other indications baby needed help. After her surgery Nicole felt intense pain across her shoulders that she just couldn’t ignore. It was later discovered that she has a huge internal bleed which led her to once again have surgery and a stay in ICU. I will let you hear all of the details of Nicole’s story but I do want to mention one person who made her feel amazing throughout a really dark, traumatic time. The lactation consultant in the hospital made her feel like the superwoman she was. She looked and spoke to her not necessarily like the sick person she was but as a woman who just became a mother for the first time. The time, care and attention she gave Nicole helped her on her way to a breastfeeding experience that lasted 3 years.

This next episode I chat to Aoife who created her page last year @down_with_croia and I'm so glad she did.  Aoife shares how she felt when she saw that positive test and the early weeks of pregnancy. During a routine 12 week scan the stenographer noticed some markers which indicated the possibility her baby had Down Syndrome. After further tests Aoife & Craig were told they were expecting a baby girl and these tests also confirmed the diagnosis of Down Syndrome. They were beside themselves with the fact they were having a little girl, their girl!

Aoife then chats about Croía's birth at 34 weeks and the fact she was nearly delivered vaginally despite her baby being breech. She was brought into the world via Cesarean birth and immediately transferred to NICU. Aoife then chats about the days following her daughters birth and the weeks after Croía underwent necessary surgery.

In this next episode I share my chat with Nessa who is a wellness coach aswell as hypnobirthing birthing coach and so much more. At the time of our conversation Nessa was living in Australia but was in the process of returning home to Tipperary where she now lives with her family. Nessa planned on birthing her boy at home with the support of her partner, midwife and doula. She prepared mentally aswell as physically staying active throughout.

At 38 weeks after an unsuccessful ECV due to baby presenting breech, Nessa was told that her HB was no longer an option. She was devastated and really had to dig deep to visualise her hospital birth.

After 17 hours of labour, she once again found herself having to surrender as she was prepped for a Cesarean section to bring her boy into the world.

Nessa said something that stuck with me "Luke taught me so many parenting lessons before he was even born". I love our chat and I know you will too.

In this week's episode I share my chat with @chelseahudson_1 who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. Chelsea didn't plan on birthing her boy without pain relief but he came so quickly it simply wasn't any other option. She comments on how amazing she felt after his birth and couldn't quiet believe she had experienced birth without pain relief.

She was pregnant with her little girl throughout Covid so didn't have the support of her partner while in labour in hospital but once again everything happened so quickly so it wasn't long before he could join her. In this next episode I chat to Lorraine, the founder of Globebaby Doula. Lorraine is a full spectrum doula and has created various workshops to support her clients on their journey into motherhood.

Due to her own experiences, Lorraine realised there was a very obvious need to support those about to embark on childbirth! She can help her clients with prepariton for labour, birth, breastfeeding and also help out at home with the seemingly simply tasks like light house work.

We chat about a 3-Step-Rewind process that Lorraine offers, which can help lift heavy symptoms or thoughts linked with a difficult birth experience. So interesting and a tool so necessary at the moment.

In this week's episode I share my chat with @amandarussellryan who talks me through her two experiences with birth. Amanda suffered an early pregnancy loss with her first pregnancy and later a chemical pregnancy on her third pregnancy.

Amanda chats about the birth of son which was aided by forceps as he was a stargazer. She also lost a significant volume of blood which impacted her immediate recovery and those first few hours with baby. She recalls how she felt so supported by her medical team and speaks of them so fondly. She then dives into the details surrounding her induction and the birth of her little girl during the Covid restrictions. Amanda comments on how much support the general staff at the hospital showed her. As she paced the floors ,each person she passed, greeted her, had a little chat and just let her know they saw her.

Although she didn't feel as supported by her medical team throughout her second birth experience, she still has such fond memories despite Covid threatening to get in the way.

In this week's episode I chat to Clare who at the time was expecting her second baby and in the throws of labour/birth preparation. We also touch on her first birth experience in 2018 bringing her little boy Sean into the world.

We then chat about how she was feeling in comparison to her pregnancy with her first boy. She talks me through her level of preparation from attending @pamjdpilates weekly pilates class (and falling asleep each time!), attending a hypnobirthing class with @midwife_aine and using her @gentlebirthofficial app to help calm her mind in the evenings.

Although her experience was very different to what she hoped for, the tools she learned in her preparation helped her throughout. Her little boy Rían was brought into the world via an emergency C-section after she suffered a placental abruption.

In this week's episode I share my chat with Tanja who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. Tanja came to Ireland as a student 18 years ago and fell pregnant with her little girl in her first year of college. Although she was supported by her friend she had a tough birthing experience. She was completely unaware of the birthing process and how her body would feel, she was petrified. Unfortunately, despite being so scared and alone, the hospital didn't support her as much as she felt she needed.

Her second experience was poles apart. She chats to me about her recent homebirth and her level of preparation. She reads books, watched films and spent time connecting with baby in her tummy. Tanja was supported by midwife Caroline who made her feel comfortable, safe and capable. She was exactly what Tanja needed.

In this week's episode I chat to Sinead who talks me through her five pregnancies & four births. She chats about pregnancy for the first time, feeling guilt for her first child whilst pregnant with her second baby and we then chat about her third pregnancy.

Sinead suffered early pregnancy loss on her fourth pregnancy. She talks us through how devasting it was but also the physical aspect. Her symptoms became increasingly severe and she spiked a temperature which was later associated with a sepsis diagnosis. A strong message from Sineads's story is that of realising you're not the only person who can run the fort. It wasn't until Sinead surrendered to the signals her body was sending her to heal, that she fully recovered.

We then chat about her fourth experience with birth at the height of Covid. She arrived at the hospital waving hello to the midwives and her babe was in her arms 30 minutes later.

In this next episode I chat to Amy who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Amy's first experience wasn't what any women should be subjected too. She was unsupported not only through the birth of her little boy but also breastfeeding.

Amy & her husband decided the time was right to start trying for another when their son Nikolai was 18 months old. Four months into her second pregnancy, Amy was flooded with anxiety as a result of her previous experience. Thankfully, she was supported by everyone she came in contact with from that point (bar one!). Her little girl moved into breech position at 38 weeks gestation.

In this week's episode I chat to Nicola who shares her story through fertility struggles, grief, positive cesarean section and the loss of her daughter Anna at 23 weeks gestation.

Nicola suffered an early pregnancy loss after her first round of IVF but later welcomed her son Ted after a second IVF attempt. She shares how she coped with the depths of grief after the sudden death of her sister just weeks before her baby was due. Thankfully, she had a really positive birth experience bringing her little boy Ted into the world.

7 months later Nicola discovered she was pregnant for the third time, a surprise they welcomed very much. She talks me through those first few months of pregnancy when everything seemed fine and the moment it all changed.

Nicola opens her heart to us and shares so much of her life through the last few years. Part two of her story will be shared next week when she speaks about pregnancy after loss and the birth of her little girl just last year.

In this week's episode I chat to Sinead who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. Sinead was induced at 37 weeks as baby was measuring small. She made the decision to keep her circle small and told very few people she was going to have baby soon. She was supported by a great team of midwives who encouraged her to keep moving while in labour. She then shares her experience in the days following.

Sinead decided she wanted a homebirth on her second pregnancy so contacted @homebirthmidwife_mullingar Angela in her third trimester who happened to be available. She chats about gravitating towards the bathroom to labour despite having a really beautiful setup in her sitting room. Sinead gave birth days after the HSE pulled birthing in the water. She had to leave the pool moments before baby arrived but at the time didn't mind. I love how she talks about the intensity of those moments baby is just about to come into the world.

Lots of honesty shared by Sinead and laughter too

Judith was diagnosed with PCOS which she knew could contribute to difficulties conceiving. She fell pregnant with her little boy weeks before her wedding and chats us through her pregnancy which thankfully was uneventful. She opted to have an epidural and speaks of some funny moments in the delivery room.

Unfortunately she suffered multiple pregnancy losses after the birth of her first boy. She was given pregnancy supporting medication and also made some lifestyle changes. She then fell pregnant with her second little boy and speaks of her anxiety in those early weeks.

Judith then speaks about her son Noah who was born at 16 weeks gestation. She shares her experience with loss in detail and how as a family they came together to say goodbye to their little boy.

I also share an update on Judith's journey to try and conceive once again.

I spoke to Eibhlín in January when she was in her final trimester with her third pregnancy. We chatted about her two previous experiences with labour and birth, one being a homebirth on a barge she shared with her husband and the other was a hospital birth after she was diagnosed with polyhydramnios.

Eibhlín then talks us through how she felt throughout her third pregnancy and we catch up after her little girl arrived safely into the world. She birthed three gorgeous healthy babies weighing 9'13, 10+ and 11+ pounds, all vaginally with no intervention. She mentions several occasions where she read her body by going into quiet spaces, protected the flow of oxytocin and she spoke up to ensure she gave her body the chance to just do it's thing.

In the episode I chat to Carolina who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Carolina conceived four months after she and her husband made the decision was made to start a family. She felt fine throughout her first pregnancy but at 36 weeks she felt a sharp pain in her stomach. This pain was followed by vomiting and a very noticeable feeling of the babys head dropping after a visit to the toilet. Her baby was born hours later. From that initial pain to birth it was a mere three hours.

Her second experience delivering her daughter was similar but even quicker at 1.5 hours. She talks me through her postpartum journey with both babies which was definitely impacted by the trauma her body experienced due to such quick births.

She says she didn't feel that immediate surge of love for both babies but she remembers the very time she fell in love with her daughter at 11 weeks. She said a image of that moment with us, picture 4.

So much in this episode and I know Carolinas story will resonate with so many of you

In the next episode I chat to Triona who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. Triona had two very different experiences, both in a hospital environment. She opted for an epidural with the birth of her little girl and thankfully she was up and walking quiet soon afterwards.

It took her 7 months to conceive her little boy. Triona second experience was so animalistic. She was completely unaware that her body and mind were guiding her to prepare for labour and the birth of her baby. She went inwards, wanted quiet, comfort and warmth, everything you need to allow the love hormone to flow through your body.

Triona wasn't examined in the hospital so it came as a huge surprise to everyone when it was discovered her little baby's head was crowning while she was on the labour ward. She was rushed down to delivery where she welcomed her little bit peacefully. He came into the world into quietly to soft hands and low voices. A gorgeous environment for a new baby.

𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩 In this next episode I chat to Kirtsy who talks me through her pregnancy and the birth of her little girl Mia in a UK hospital. Kirsty conceived quickly and had an smooth pregnancy. On one occasion it appeared her placenta was low lying but thankfully this resolved itself with no intervention.

At 38 weeks, Kirsty lost a severe amount of blood but was sent home from the hospital after all appeared ok. She then lost a considerable amount of blood on a second occasion, immediately went to the hospital and refused to leave until it was fully examined.

In a very short space of time her situation changed dramatically. She experienced a severe placental abruption which resulted in an emergency cesarean section, an 11 hour surgery, 28 units of blood and also a hysterectomy to save her life. What Kirsty went through is extremely rare but thankfully the right person stepped in at the right time to save her life.

We also chat about her recovery throughout the months and years following her daughters birth. Many changes have since been implemented in the hospital as a result of what Kirsty's story. On the website, I will detail all of the changes and how Kirsty has been so active in supporting others with similar traumatic births.

Thank you Kirsty

In the next episode I chat to @sarah_tobin who talks me through her three experiences with pregnancy & birth. Before we go into her birth stories I ask Sarah to give us an insight into Tapping (EFT). I've spoken to several women throughout the past year who have gained so much from their sessions with Sarah. . We then go into Sarah's birth story. Her little girl Alice passed away days after birth which Sarah says was the result of negligence at the maternity hospital in the UK. She then talks us through the weeks and months following Alice's passing and how she coped with grief. . Sarah fell pregnant a couple of months later and sought guidance to help her deal with anxiety throughout those early months. This is where her therapist Kate and EFT came into her life. Sarah opted for an elective Cesarean section to bring her little boy into the world . We then chat about her third pregnancy which she says "felt just like the first". She settled into pregnancy and enjoyed growing her baby. Her little boy was delivered via VBAC with the support of her partner. She shares a gorgeous moment when the midwives helped her catch her little boy. The birth experience she hoped for and needed. . Enjoy!

In this next episode Claire talks me through her two pregnancies and one birth. Claire suffered a missed miscarriage which was discovered at 13 weeks. It wasn't until her subsequent pregnancy that she realised there was unresolved feelings attached to her previous experience. She worked with @sarah_tobin early on which enabled her to really settle in and enjoy her pregnancy. Infact, she mentions that despite being in lockdown her second trimester was one of the most enjoyable periods of her life. . Claire went into spontaneous labour but did need an induction due to the presence of meconium in her waters. She then talks us through the events that followed which include various interventions and later a postpartum hemorrhage. She had nothing but support from her medical team and also family who came together to help her heal throughout the weeks that followed. . Thank you for sharing Claire.

Orla chats to me about Liam's birth and those immediate decisions you have to make after the loss of a baby. . Throughout her fourth pregnancy she was expectedly nervous but was supported with regular scans by the medical team. She was scheduled for a section and welcomed her little boy into the wod during the pandemic. Despite Covid she speaks of the last few months so fondly. . Enjoy!

In this episode I chat to Mairead who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. She planned for a homebirth with her first boy but was transferred as her waters had broken past the 24 hour time frame. She opted for an epidural which she mentions was the best decision at the time. It allowed her body to rest and recharge for her boys birth.

We then speak about her second pregnancy, again she opted for a homebirth. I love how Mairead speaks of the day she went into labour and she mentions her "labour project" which is a fantastic idea. Her little boy arrived quickly into the world leaving everyone in shock but Mairead, she felt powerful and elated. This was the birth he wanted!

We also chat about motherhood, especially first time round. Filling that role of mother can be daunting, especially when each experience is a first.

In last week's episode we ended our conversation just after this little man's arrival into the world. How peaceful and gorgeous does he look in this photo!

In part two of Alice's story she speaks of the postpartum hemorrhage she suffered soon after she was settled into the ward. Alice was hemorraging for a long period before it was finally recognised and action was taken. She deteriorated quickly and spent sometime in the high dependency unit. So much happened in such a short space of time.

Awareness of postpartum blood loss, what's considered normal and what's not is so so important.

Please let someone know if you experience any of the below 24 hours after birth. Secondary PPH can occur up to 12 weeks afterbirth although less common.

📍You are soaking a pad every 1-2 hours 📍Blood loss suddenly increases 📍Blood loss suddenly changes to bright red 📍You feel dizzy or weak 📍You simply feel you are losing too much blood

Alice also makes a really valid point surrounding PTSD and PND which I know lots of you can relate to.

Thank you Alice for sharing & bringing this conversation to the forefront

With Alice's support I have decided to share her story across two episodes. In part 1 of her story she talks me through her pregnancy during Covid-19, her long labour and the birth of her son.

Alice shares so much detail of her experience and I know it will be of such value to many of you. After a long labour it was discovered there was meconium in her waters. She decided to opt for an epidural to give her body time to rest before birthing her baby vaginally.

We touch on the first few hours postpartum but I will share her experience with PPH in part 2 as I feel it really needs it own episode.

She chats to me in detail about why she created various aspects of Gentlebirth with a particular focus on brain science.

I know so many of you have utilised the Gentlebirth app not only for birth preparation but also through loss and postnatally. Tracy's voice very often puts me to sleep or dilutes the stress of my day while I listen to the Wellness track on repeat.

In the next episode I chat to Jessica. We spoke when Jessica was 36 weeks pregnant about how she felt, the prep in the lead up to Bonnie's arrival and what her birth preferences were. There was so much excitement in her house with her two little ladies waiting on their sisters arrival.

We then spoke a few days after Bonnie came into the world, Jessica was still on such a high. Her waters broke on her due date as per her daughters predictions. She got the epidural she wanted, they decided induction was best and she was also administered antibiotics for GBS. She had such a gorgeous calm birth surrounded by a team of midwives who read her so well.

  • Story surrounding Infant Loss shared -

In this episode Yvonne shares her story of experiencing the loss of her son, Noah at 34 weeks gestation. She received the devastating news that Noah had Edwards Syndrome which is considered a life limiting genetic condition. Yvonne shares details of his birth along with so much more which I'm very grateful for.

We then chat about her little girl Ayla who recently celebrated her 2nd birthday. Ayla was diagnosed with both Edwards Syndrome & Down Syndrome after birth. I have followed Yvonne's story for some time and have seen Ayla grow from strength to strength. The early days were incredibly tough but now, she is oozing with personality, sits up unaided, giggles away at her mammy and is very much loved, adored and cherished.

On this episode of AMW I chat to Sue who talks me through the role of a lactation consultant. Being completely honest I initially thought an IBCLC helped you with a poor latch or could help with tongue tie, little did I know.

We discuss how a IBCLC can support you both antenatally and also in the days following babies arrival. The continuity of care and follow-up is what makes this service so special. It's amazing to see many other health professionals qualify as lactation consultants to support their patients. It's most certainly no easy task gaining that qualification.

Our chat is from the perspective of a private practitioner but I intend on diving into the services of an IBCLC in a hospital environment in the future. There is such a strong community of passionate people providing support for many of us who run bumps in our feeding journeys.

In this next episode I chat to Rosie and Adam, creators of the @the_irish_mummy podcast. We chat about Rosie's four experiences with pregnancy & birth. Together they share not only intimate details of each birth but we also discuss how mindset can have such a profound impact on your experience.

Rosie made a conscious effort to educate herself after her first birth and as a result was so in tune with her body. She understood the environment she needed to help that oxytocin flow and always trusted her instincts. Adam also shares his perspective as a birth partner discussing how and when he could support his wife. It seems the universe created opportunities for them to have a really lovely experience bringing their little boy Ezra into the world.

"The midwives tied his chord with a piece of string and they asked us to gather round and share our intentions for Ezra. We each shared our intentions including the midwives. It was such a nice moment"

In this episode I chat to Rosie who talks me through her two pregnancies & births. Rosie utilised the birthing pool in the Coombe and delivered her little boy safely with the support of her midwives and husband. She suffered a hemorrhage so immediately had to leave the pool to be treated. She also had difficulty with her placenta which she goes into.

Throughout her second pregnancy she suffered anxiety and had various visits to the maternity hospital to investigate a number of bleeds. Rosie also hoped for a waterbirth second time round but this wasn't signed off due to her previous hemorrhage.

She is so open about her journey with motherhood and I truly appreciate her honesty and how much detail she shared.

In our first episode I chat to a homebirth midwife. Áine tells me why she chose to be a midwife and later why she felt being out in the community was where she needed to be. We chat about why the service needs to be considered from early pregnancy when your care options are being discussed.

She shares everything you need to know from initial contact if you are considering homebirth, antenatal appointments, the birth itself and those two weeks of postnatal care.

The 2020 stats speak for themselves 94% of service users rated the service as excellent, 99% felt their postnatal care was adequate and supportive and 93% of service users were exclusively breastfeeding within 14 days on discharge.

Leanne planned a homebirth, built a relationship with her midwife and prepared her home but later for reasons which she will go through, it was decided she should birth her baby in hospital.

She talks me through her long labour which finally ended with a C-section to bring her boy into the world. It wasn't what she ever envisaged the outcome would be but she had such a positive experience. She was surrounded by a team that enabled her to feel comfortable and most importantly heard.

I have to say, her outlook has stayed with me. So calm, positive and an absolute pleasure to chat to

In this next episode I chat to Tia who talks me through her pregnancy & the birth of her little girl, Sofia. She left an appointment at 5 weeks feeling as though "This is it, this will be the end of this pregnancy". She was prescribed bed rest for the first three months of her pregnancy and thankfully baby Sofia was just fine.

Tia shares such a positive C-section story. She nurtured both her body and mind in preparation for whatever lay ahead in order to avoid disappointment. She has an incredibly positive outlook on life and her story is so uplifting. She pretty much smiles throughout the whole interview, you will hear it.

George wasn't opposed to having an epidural but in the end she brought her little girl into the world with the aid of her 900 song playlist, a husband who she recalls reminded her of a gym coach "breathe in, out, in, out" and the presence of two midwives who were the perfect pairing.

In our next episode I chat to Sinead who talks me through her two experiences with birth. Sinead gave birth to her little girl Lily 9 years ago shortly after the sudden loss of her husband, Geoff. . Sinead talks us through giving birth with the support of her family and the days following Lily's arrival. Although her medical team were aware she suffered a 4th degree tear it wasn't until later, after a scope that they found the rectovaginal fistula. Essentially, there was a small tear between the rectum and the vagina which caused passing of stool through the vagina. She talks us through her treatment and recovery, which was slow. . Sinead is so open in our conversation, again, purely to let others who have suffered through the same diagnosis know they are not alone. . We then touch on Dylan's arrival which although was an emergency C-section, Sinead considered a "walk in the park" in comparison.I have linked Sinead's Instagram account below if you would like to reachout.

In the next episode I chat to Julie who talks me through her pregnancy & the birth of her son, Ricky. Julie has cerebral palsy as does her husband David and together embarked on the journey into parenthood with a solid plan in place.

She discusses how she commenced her preparation for pregnancy two years prior to concieveing. She focused on being physically strong, creating a strong team around her and also has an exceptional family unit to support them.

Julie built a trusting relationship with her obstetrician and with her support, decided to opt for an C-section to bring Ricky into the world. Overall her experience was positive but throughout her story it's starkly obvious there are gaps with regard to women in Ireland giving birth with physical disability.

In this episode I chat to Megan who talks me through her three pregnancies & two births. Unfortunately Megan had a miscarriage early on with her first pregnancy. She conceived quickly with her little girl Aylla and she goes into all the details surrounding her pregnancy and birth. She speaks of her experience with PND which I know will resonate with many of you. I asked Megan to share her story on the podcast due to how honest and forthcoming she has been in sharing such a private time of her life. It's imperative to our health and the health of our families that we speak up and ask for help if we don't feel ourselves.

Megan then talks me through her third pregnancy and the birth of her son CJ. She discusses her anxieties at the prospect of giving birth during the pandemic and the possibility of being alone throughout labour. During her pregnancy she attended the Coombe for an appointment with a mental health specialist and together they created a plan which would ensure Megan did not suffer as she did after her first birth.

Thankfully, her postnatal experience has been very different second time round. Along with Megan's episode, I will link supports on the website which might be of use to you should you need help. Once again, please do not suffer in silence. You will never regret getting help and it's never too late to avail of it.

Trigger warning : In this episode we chat about the loss of Pam's little girl Rosie at 18 weeks gestation. Pam goes into details surrounding Rosie's birth which some may find difficult to listen too. I am so grateful to Pam for sharing her story, as loss is still very much unspoken. Thank you Pam ❤️

In this episode Pam chats about her 4 pregnancies & 3 Births. During her first experience with birth Pam required an episiotomy to aid with her little man's arrival as he had shoulder dystocia and she was also tearing into her back passage. Thankfully, he entered the world safe, happy & healthy and mum made a smooth physical recovery. She then talks us through her breastfeeding journey and also speaks honestly about her experience with PND.

In the last EP of 2021 I chat to Jen (@irishmamabuys ) about her pregnancy & the birth of her son Ben. Jen welcomed her niece into her life when she was 18 months old so Ben was very lucky to have his sister waiting for him when he arrived home.

Jen discovered she was pregnant at nearly 3 months, although it was a shock they welcomed the lovely surprise. She was living in Spain at the time but decided to move home during her third trimester.

Jens estimated due date came and went and she was later induced. Little Ben was showing signs of distress after a very long labour with little dilation so the decision was made to opt for a C-section. Jen was completely comfortable with this decision, all she wanted was her baby to be safe.

She then very open and honestly talks us through her recovery and breastfeeding post op.

We then chat about Nicole's second pregnancy where she continued to feel great, if anything just a little slower. She requested a full blood check in her third trimester with the results leading to an emergency section. Her medical team suspected HELLP syndrome hence the reason they acted so promptly.

I will let her tell you all the details of her story aswell as her experience of bringing a newborn into the world during the height of lockdown.

In this week's episode I chat to Lisa about her three pregnancies and births. Lisa's first little boy was born in hospital and she chose to opt for an epidural, followed by a very quick birth. She talks us through postpartum life first time round and the changes she made with her two subsequent pregnancies. She referred to the grove in her couch where she sat and fed her second little boy without any interruptions or feeling obliged to fulfill any other needs bar those of her babies. A contrast to her first experience.

She then talks us through her second pregnancy and birth. She opted for an epidural with her second little boy but describes how she was much further along than anyone was aware of and baby arrived swiftly.

Lisa decided to go down the homebirth route with her third pregnancy. She chose @laura_todeliveryandbeyond as her midwife through @privatemidwivesireland and they shared a beautiful experience. Lisa admits she was nervous approaching her consultant about her choice to have her baby at home. In this weeksepisode I chat to Ariana who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Ariana is the founder of @wellfedphotography and is in the process of creating a book surrounding breastfeeding. We agreed that we feel very privileged to not only listen to so many stories but also see very special pictures that were taken at such an intimate time in someone's life.

Although Ariana had two C-sections to bring her babies into the world, they were starkly different. Her first experience was not what she had hoped for which was definitely the catalyst for how she prepared and dealt with her subsequent pregnancy and birth. She worked hard both physically and mentally to enable her body to not only remain strong throughout her second pregnancy but also recover after her labour and birth. Putting in the work paid dividends, she felt completely different and she was back on her feet, enjoying her passion for photography at 8 weeks postpartum.

She originally from Australia, as you will hear from her gorgeous accent and married an Irish man making the permanent move to Ireland in 2017.    She attended hypnobirthing with @brenda_communitymidwife and found it to be so beneficial, arming her with the knowledge to make decisions she was comfortable with.  She had a back to back labour which was tough and she opted for an epidural which gave her the relief she was looking for allowing her to settle into birth after a really long and intense labour.    She then chats to me about her breastfeeding journey and how vital support to help and encourage you throughout tough times.   Loved chatting to Jessica and I'm looking forward to our coffee date which may be in a field at a distance but so be it. In this episode I chat to Jen about her three pregnancies & births. Jen decided to employ a doula on her first pregnancy and she proved to be an amazing support. She helped prepare them for the birth and held their space within the hospital allowing Jen to have that much needed quiet time to really tap into her final stages of labour. She was such an anchor throughout and importantly helped Jen & Mark process the birth which wasn't what they had expected or hoped for.   She then chats to us about Juno's birth which was a swift to say the least. Juno was born on the M50 but I will say no more and let Jen tell you all the gorgeous details    Her third birth was a homebirth, something, Jen has desired from the start of her pregnancy journey with her first baby. A few bumps in the road in her final weeks may have made it difficult to settle into a HB state of mind but the day of Bills birth was a gorgeous affair. I played it back multiple times.   As with all of the stories I hear, I had goosebumps and a smile on my face listening back to Jen's story. I know you will too!   Enjoy!

Her first three babies were born in the US.  She was pregnant at 16 with her first baby and very much felt unsupported in the hospital environment. In the next episode I chat to Rana who talks me through her 3 pregnancies & births   Rana gave birth to her first son in Turkey where the culture is C-section strong which wasn't necessarily her preference.  Men aren't allowed into the hospital so she laboured and birthed alone after chosing to go with an epidural which failed to take. Unfortunately, this was the case on her second labour too.  . Rana felt her level of knowledge and preparation wasn't where it needed to be in order to achieve the natural, medication free birth she desired on her third birth. So, as a team, Rana and her husband prepared with military prescision, ensuring he could be her voice when she needed. He was fully informed of her preferences, what Q's to ask if intervention was needed and he felt confident to say no if needed. Preparation as a couple is key and she discusses this further in the episode.   Enjoy

In this episode I chat to Clare about her pregnancy and the birth of  her little boy, Teddy. As a midwife, Clare understood the importance of preparing for her birth so took various classes to ensure she was ready for what lay ahead. Unfortunately her labour was tough and a difficult birth followed. Clare also talks about her breastfeeding journey and struggles and how she decided to re-lactate with success.

Although Clare's story is tough to listen to at times, it's still so evident that her passion lies with mum & baby. She remains dedicated to her calling as a midwife but maybe now on more acute level as a lactation consultant, infant massage instructor and various other roles of support.

Thank you for sharing your story Clare!

During Steph's pregnancy she practiced hypnobirthing which contributed to her strong yet calm mindset through labour & birth.   There is something special with how she tells her story, you'll agree with me I'm sure of it    Enjoy!

Gill talks us through her pregnancy & the birth of her little man Oisin. She had regular appointments throughout her pregnancy as she also attended a private OBGYN therefore had checkups bi-monthly. She was full term in the middle of the horrendous snow in 2018 which stopped most of us in our tracks. Gill opted for an epidural after being induced due to her waters breaking over 24 hours prior. She recalls her labour but also the moments following Oisins arrival which gave me goosebumps to hear. Thankfully all was ok in the end and within the hour he was back in her arms. Gill & her husband actually wrote to the Coombe to highlight how well they were looked after during her stay which is so lovely to hear. We hear the negative reports but so many positives despite a difficult time just after birth.   Enjoy!

This week I intereviewed Becca who is a NZ native, lives in Autralia and married to an Irishman. She suffered with nausea and vomiting until the half way mark and was diagnosed with Strep B at 36 weeks. She felt there was a noticable divided beteween the midwives and doctors, especially as she went into labour. The midwives in particluar were here voice and their encouragement helped prevent intervention. Her hypnobirthing helped her push through the final phase of her labour after being induced.

Great insight in the maternity service in Australia. Also an example of using certain aspects of hypnobirthing to suit your preferences if you don't feel you are interested in the music, visualisations etc
