Welcome to Episode 93 of the Adventures with Grammy Podcast. Today's guest, Tom Long, began performing as the Singing Santa in 1985 when he was 21 years old. He knew that first Christmas he had chosen the right avocation when a curly headed lad with big brown eyes said he wanted to hear Santa say, "Ho. Ho. Ho."
Throughout the years the Magic of Christmas and watching parents light up when their children sit in Santa's lap have fueled Tom's passion for performing as The Singing Santa. An invitation to work with Marie Osmond and an appearance on America's Got Talent added a bit of spice to his role. When he retires from his day job as the general manager of the largest restaurant chain in Virginia, Tom intends to up his Singing Santa productions and hopes to perform with The Rockettes and during the Macy's Parade.
Tom says his career as The Singing Santa would not be possible without the support of his wife. Even his three children help out making the Christmas season truly a family affair for the Long household.
I began our interview by asking Tom to talk about his children and how he incorporates them into his performances.

For most of his adult life, Paul’s feet have been off the ground and in the air flying from one destination to another -- sometimes upside down -- sometimes at warp speed.
A retired US Marine, naval aviator and Delta Airline captain, Paul primarily is known today as an acrobatic pilot who owns and flies a Russian MIG 15 fighter jet in airshows across North America.
The role he cherishes is grandpa. Today we will discuss his first children’s book, Jasper and the Christmas Faeries, a book co-written with his wife, Lisa, but inspired by his youngest grandchild and only grandson.

Focusing on early childhood development is vital for children and for our society. Research has demonstrated facilitating low-stress/high-engagement environments at the earliest ages builds strong, confident learners, who as adults, make up the backbone of a successful society. America's failure to make early childhood development one of our highest priorities is the reason our nation has shown a steady decline in numerous important areas relative to other countries. Today's guest, Dr. Rick Allen, has written Great by Eight, a bold call-to-action that demands intense emphasis on the development of young children, in particular from birth to age three, and continuing through age eight. By investing in early childhood development now, and over the long-term, we can become a far stronger and more unified nation. Great by Eight provides experienced insights on how we can get there. Drawing on nearly thirty years in public administration, extensive work in early childhood program design, and an abundance of emerging research, Dr. Allen sheds light on the remarkable power of early childhood development. He was president and CEO of United Way of Pierce County, Washington, a community approaching one million, for more than twenty years. Before that he served eight years as director of the Pierce County Community Action Agency, working predominantly with families in distress. Dr. Allen holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Eastern Washington University, a master's degree in interpersonal communication from Ohio University, and both a master's and a doctorate in public administration from the University of Southern California.

What I didn't mention is that you also have life experiences that the average person can relate to such as bailing hay on an Eastern Washington farm, working as a dishwasher and night janitor in a large restaurant, laying railroad track in central Oregon, working construction jobs in Pullman, Washington and Lewiston, Idaho, and serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam era. What led to your focus on the importance of early childhood years?

Michelle Booth is the founder and CEO of Make Momentos, LLC, a tech startup whose mission is to offer adults an easy-to-use platform to create keepsake e-books for the children in their lives.
Booth has been helping people tell their stories for more than 25 years. She has experience ghostwriting nonfiction manuscripts for a variety of clients including a former White House staffer in the Nixon and Ford administrations, prominent businesspeople and retirees wanting to preserve their stories for future generations.
Booth was selected to edit the memoir of a former NBA basketball player. She has written profiles on a state senator and a winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” for Oklahoma Sports & Fitness Magazine and was a regular contributor to the publication.
Prior to her work in the publishing industry, she worked with companies in a variety of industries on their strategic marketing efforts.

Russ Wrightson is a homeschooling dad of two boys ages 12 and 14. He says his boys are excited to learn from anything that crosses their paths, including videos, board games and a math book or two.

Our guest today is Eddy Smits, a former professional clown, who hails from Belgium. He says authentic communication with children would heal society's woes and enable children to grow into adults who could face any challenge and be effective world leaders. That statement reminded me of advice I received when my oldest child, Craig, was a toddler. A very wise person told me the qualities we admire in adults are not qualities we admire when children exhibit those same behaviors. That statement stopped me cold and helped shape my philosophy of raising children. Carl Landau, the co-author of Pickleball for Dummies, says the sport has a world-wide, multigenerational following, with more than 5 million players and counting.

There were about 3.7 million homeschool students in 2020-2021 in grades K-12 in the United States (roughly 6% to 7% of school-age children). There were about 2.5 million homeschool students in spring 2019 (or 3% to 4% of school-age children) [note 1]. The homeschool population had been growing at an estimated 2% to 8% per annum over the past several years, but it grew drastically from 2019-2020 to 2020-2021. The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests. (The public school average is the 50th percentile; scores range from 1 to 99.) A 2015 study found Black homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above Black public school students (Ray, 2015). 78% of peer-reviewed studies on academic achievement show homeschool students perform statistically significantly better than those in institutional schools (Ray, 2017). Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income. Whether homeschool parents were ever certified teachers is not related to their children’s academic achievement. Degree of state control and regulation of homeschooling is not related to academic achievement. Home-educated students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions. Homeschool students are increasingly being actively recruited by colleges 69% of peer-reviewed studies on success into adulthood (including college) show adults who were home educated succeed and perform statistically significantly better than those who attended institutional schools (Ray, 2017).

Today's episode is all about breastfeeding. Our guest is Dr. Amaka Nnamani, a pediatrician and the author of the children's picture book titled Ziora's Quest: Mommy's Milk Rocks about breastfeeding written from the perspective of a 6-year-old little girl.
Dr. Nnamani practices medicine in Hershey, PA. She is a passionate breastfeeding advocate. She is the Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinator for the PA American Academy of Pediatrics and the moderator for the DR. MILK Facebook group -- an exclusive online community for female physicians that breastfeed and/or are interested in learning about lactation. She was one of the AAP’s Section on Breastfeeding abstract reviewers this year for the AAP’s National Conference and Exhibition (NCE) which will be held in October. In addition, she received two grants aimed at improving breastfeeding rates especially in the young and black community. She also is a member of the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition and recently completed a Breastfeeding Policy course organized by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO).
My children’s book will be released August 27 to coincide with National Breastfeeding Month.

To learn more about today's guest, visit https://www.shirleyshowalter.com/ Born into a plain-dressing, plain-speaking Mennonite farm family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, today’s guest, Shirley Showalter, grew up to become a college president, a foundation executive, the author of two books, and the grandmother of three. The values her family and church instilled in her as a young girl are ones Shirley still holds dear: generosity, kindness, and empathy. In the Mennonite community, she says, “a child in need was everyone’s problem to solve, not only the parents. If I saw a ‘plain person’ in a long dress or wearing a bonnet or a plain suit on the street, I would never have hesitated to ask for a ride, for information or even for money. All through my childhood I was being trained to be that same kind of beacon of kindness for others.” That beacon of kindness shines brightly in the recently released book, The Mindful Grandparent: The Art of Loving Our Children’s Children, which Shirley co-wrote with Marilyn McEntyre. Today’s podcast is a different format from the usual guest interview. I, alone, will be speaking, and the topic is my views about gun control, specifically the guns used during school shootings.
If you are a hard-right, gun-toting person who believes high-velocity guns and ammunition designed to inflict mass carnage on people should continue to be legal, this episode is not for you. Sadly, if the riddled bodies of little children don’t change your mind, I know nothing I say will do so either, so don’t listen.
My audience for today’s episode are those grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and the public at-large who are tired of politicians extending their thoughts and prayers to the victims and the families of those killed at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Uvalde, Buffalo, Boulder, Atlanta, Dayton, El Paso, Virginia Beach, Virginia Tech, Thousand Oaks, Pittsburgh, Parkland, Sutherland Springs, Las Vegas, Orlando, Roseburg, Oak Creek, Tulsa and elsewhere.
Thoughts and prayers mean nothing without action.
I know the power of people who join to make things happen. Think soccer moms. Think parents of children with autism.
If you are as enraged as I am that day after day the news is filled with reports of the slaughter of innocent people who should have been safe learning in their schools, praying at their houses of worship, shopping at their neighborhood grocery stores, and performing their duties in their work environments, then you can make a difference.
If you are as irate as I am that Congress has not passed legislation to minimize these killing fields, then you can make a difference.
If you are as furious as I am when you hear politicians say, “Guns are not the problem. Mental health problems are,” then you can make a difference.
Please continue to listen and I will show you how.
There is no doubt the lack of mental health services in the United States is a huge problem, but Guns ARE the issue I am addressing today. In particular, the AR-15, which is designed as a semiautomatic version of the military-grade M16. In fact, the AR-15 first was marketed to the military as a lighter weight version of the M16. It is the AR-15 … gunmen used in the most recent attacks in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa.
During the next few minutes, I will give you nine facts, I will ask you to think about five things, I will ask you to do five things to protect our children and grandchildren, and I will give you four resources. Don’t worry about taking notes. Links to the resources and support of the facts I cite are in the show notes.

The gunman who massacred 19 young children and two teachers and wounded 17 others in Uvalde took more ammunitioninto Robb Elementary School than a US soldier takes into a wartime battle. Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said the gunman fired 142 rounds at the children and around the school.
He legally bought two AR-15 rifles and more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition in the days after his 18th birthday at a cost of about $4,000. Some reports say he saved money working at Wendy’s. Other reports say he bought the guns and ammunition on credit

Since the massacre in Uvalde May 24, 2022, there have been 21 mass shootings throughout the U.S. as if June 3, 2022.

Episode 70 of the Adventures with Grammy Podcast is a rebroadcast of Episode 1, which features my sister discussing the skip-gen cross-country trip she and her husband and two grandchildren took in their RV. The first stop on their adventures was the life-size replica of Noah's Ark in Northern Kentucky not too far from Cincinnati, home of The Ark's sister museum, the Creation Museum.
Exciting for 2022 is children 10 and under enjoy free admission to the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, and as long as one adult is in the group, there’s no limit to how many children you can bring for free.
My mother just returned from a bus trip to both museums her Senior Citizens Group sponsored. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her visit. I, too, am looking forward to visiting the Ark.

Today's guest is Denise Gruzensky, the author of Not Like the Others: Harley's Story, the first book in her series "Life Lessons from Fur Friends."
Harley's story is one of unconditional love ... the story of rescue and adoption ... and the story of living with diabetes. A family nurse practitioner, Densie, who has a passion for rescues, also is a mom to four little humans. Her forever family through adoption started when she rescued Harley.
Before I welcome Denise to the podcast, I need to update you about my family. I mentioned a few episodes ago my mother has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. I had realized she was becoming more forgetful, but I shrugged it off because she is 89 years old, and I figured her forgetfulness was part of the aging process. Unfortunately, it is much more serious. I am devastated for my mother. Within the past year her primary care doctor had declared Mom the picture of health. He had predicted she would live past 100 years old. I never ever suspected my mother might one day receive this diagnosis.
I recently drove to South Carolina to spend time with my mother and help her put a few things into place, and I plan to spend more time with her. I love my mother very much and want her to live the happiest and most stress-free life possible. I have decided to pause my podcast for a short while. My plan is to remix earlier episodes with new introductions and to continue to interview guests. I just cannot commit right now to new episodes for the next several weeks.

Two hundred years ago Harriet Tubman was born enslaved on a farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the United States. The exact date of her birth is unknown, but consensus is sometime between 1820 and 1822. She died March 10, 1913, at about age 90, in Auburn, New York. Kicking off today and throughout 2022 events in Maryland will trace Harriet Tubman's footsteps and highlight her fight for freedom. Today we are talking with Sarah Jackson, the mom behind the Instagram site 4DMVKids, and Ranger Cierra, a park ranger at the Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Church Creek, Maryland. It is run by the National Park Service and commemorates the life of former enslaved Harriet Tubman. The park has a visitors’ center, a history museum, and, according to Sarah, an awesome, price-friendly gift shop. There is a statue of Harriet Tubman sitting on a bench in the visitor center, and as Sarah’s son discovered, the perfect location for a picture to remember your day at the park. The artifacts are on display for the first time at the Visitor Center for the entire month of March. 12 p.m. – “Foraging Freedom: Experiencing the Natural World of the Underground Railroad” Join an interactive walking tour with historian Anthony Cohen through the Legacy Garden and adjacent Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Participants should expect to be on their feet and are encouraged to wear comfortable all-weather shoes. 1 p.m. – “Jubilee Voices at Harriet’s House” Hear the Washington Revels Jubilee Voices during the Tubman 200th festivities. Ivy Butler loves to snap photographs. He's done so since his children were little, and he is continuing that tradition with his grandchildren. He and his wife were foster parents to numerous children and adopted the last five, which makes him and his wife the parents of seven children and the grandparents of 13.
The Butler Family is of mixed race and experiences challenges many grandparents face: lack of contact with children and grandchildren, long-distance grandparenting, and grandchildren living with grandparents.
Ivy cherishes his family and enjoys the times with them life affords. Part of his handling life's challenges so graciously comes through being a certified life coach. She has published two picture books in that series: "Little Cat Needs Space" and "Little Cat Feels Left Out." She will release her third book, a chapter book titled, "Little Cat & Dog's Birthday Bake: A Recipe in Caring,” February 2, 2022.
The former teacher and fitness instructor lives in Michigan with her husband, son, daughter, three pampered indoor cats, and her old Great Dane.

The Adventures with Grammy Podcast is pleased to welcome Storyteller Debra Weller, a creative performance artist using oral tradition storytelling, puppets and music to engage her audiences and students.
Debra began her career as a Storyteller more than forty years ago in New Jersey as part of the Annie Lynn Storytellers. They performed in schools, libraries, festivals and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. After a move to California, she helped to form the non-profit, South Coast Storytellers Guild. In California, she led storytelling camps, after school storytelling clubs, performed at schools, libraries and festivals as well as teaching kindergarten for thirty years.
She was the Storyteller in Residence at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles for six months. Her favorite character is Mrs. Santa Storyteller. Three years ago, she moved to Florida and has served as the president of the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine and on the Board of Directors of the Florida Storytelling Association. Debra has taught workshops from docent training to teacher professional development. Storytelling has taken her to China, Vietnam, and Scotland.
During the past two years, Debra has been presenting at international, virtual conferences and storytelling concerts. Her presentations deliver quality professional development and entertainment. In June 2021, she presented a workshop, Storytelling the Heart of the Curriculum for Early Childhood Development Forum and was a speaker at the Sphere of Influence Forum.
She provides voice overs for the Magic Polygon Storytelling App and is a frequent guest teller on Basket of Talez podcast. Episode 47. Amazing Ways to Research Your Family Tree and Write Your Personal History
In honor of Thanksgiving Day, Sharlene Habermeyer and I chat about genealogy and the importance of knowing your ancestors. She tells us how she and her husband began their research and how much easier discovering the leaves of your family tree is today with information posted online.
Sharlene and her husband of 44 years, Mark, were blessed with five sons and 13 grandchildren. They know the joys of parenting and grandparenting and the gut-wrenching emotions of losing their fourth son to a brain disorder.
She wrote the book, Good Music Brighter Children that has been translated into five languages. She taught college for 10 years and founded the Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra in Southern California that is still going strong.

I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Philip Ovadia, a heart surgeon who has lost more than 100 pounds and has kept those pounds off for many years. He has written a fascinating book: STAY OFF MY OPERATING TABLE: A HEART SURGEON’S METABOLIC HEALTH GUIDE TO LOSE WEIGHT, PREVENT DISEASE, AND FEEL YOUR BEST EVERY DAY.
As with many Americans, I need to lose weight. I look at pictures from 10 years ago and wonder how did these pounds creep up on me? I find it harder and harder to lose weight. I used to be able to walk a little faster, exercise a bit longer or lay off the ice cream for a few weeks and the pounds would come off. That’s not working for me now.
After reading an advance copy of his book and interviewing Dr. Ovadia, I know metabolic health is more important than the number on the scale. Dr. Ovadia gives us five measures to determine our metabolic health, and I am pleased only one of my numbers is off, but there’s a thin Carolyn inside me and I want her back.

Zen Pig teaches young readers the importance of gratitude, justice, empathy, compassion, and other soft skills that are important for people of all ages to embrace. Episode 38. This Bronx Girl Knew She Could
Life was not easy for the little girl growing up in the Bronx. Alcoholic parents, domestic violence, a learning difference, wrong decisions, infidelity, and depression left Kimberly Yvette Griffin longing for a lifestyle for her and her three children that seemed beyond her reach.
Writing in her journal helped her cope with feeling isolated. It helped when her parents died and again after her son Joey committed suicide.
A harsh reality forged a resolve and transformed this mother of three and grandmother of two into an award-winning publisher, editor, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, podcast host, public health advocate, author of seven children’s books, and founder of a non-profit organization.

Episode 37. Grandson strives to honor his Grandfather and the 746th Far East Army Air Force Band and secure a Best Historical Album Grammy award in 2022
Hark back to the era of the big band, jazz and swing music and the names Glenn Miller, Vaughan Monroe, Dizzie Gillespie, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong come to mind.
Lost among those sounds are the World War II bands that went to war. Many of those 500 military bands accompanied combat units and performed concerts close to the front lines.
The 746th Far East Army Air Force Band performed in the Philippines. After Japan surrendered and the soldiers were preparing to head home, they had the opportunity to record in their tent, in the jungles outside Manila, an afternoon performance of original arrangements of popular jazz tunes, thus creating the only known album by a frontline band unit.
Our guest today is historian Jason Burt, grandson of Corporal Richard Burt, the band’s lead trumpeter. The younger Burt has worked with Grammy-winning sound engineers to remaster and digitize the band’s 1945 performance. His goal is to honor all who served in World War II as he strives to secure a Best Historical Album Grammy in 2022.

Episode 36. A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill

A Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter in the folk-polka tradition, Johnny Prill has received numerous accolades for both his music and his volunteerism, which began when he was 12 years old performing with his accordion at local nursing homes.
Except for the impact of COVID-19, Johnny Prill and his family have performed monthly at the Cortney Manor Nursing Home since 1986. Each year they host an annual Christmas Eve show that features four generations of the Prill family and a special Grandparents Day Celebration for the community.
In addition to the Health Care Association of Michigan’s presentation of its “Volunteer of The Year Award,” he has received shout-outs from former Jeopardy Host, the late Alex Trebek; U.S. Olympian Misty May-Treanor; American actresses and comedians Betty White and the late Phyllis Diller; American folk singer the late Pete Seeger; country singers the late Charlie Daniels and Barbara Mandrell; and Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell.
Elected officials on the local, state, and federal levels also have honored Johnny Prill for his volunteer work to honor senior citizens and veterans.
In 1982, he wrote “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” to honor his grandparents. It has become the official song for National Grandparents Day, which is celebrated in the United States the first Sunday after Labor Day.
I extend a heart-felt welcome to this incredible musician.
I had hoped to present my interview with Johnny Prill as a bonus episode on Grandparents Day along with announcing the winners of the Adventures with Grammy Essay Contest to celebrate both Gorgeous Grandma Day, which we celebrate every July 23, and National Grandparents Day, which will celebrate this year September 12. However, a bit of a snafu prevented the contest from happening this year. Watch for it in 2022.
Because Johnny Prill gave us permission to play “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” on the podcast, I present it now to honor and celebrate grandparents near and far.

Tracy Johnson, the author of How to Feed Your Ninjas, is today’s guest. Her journey began 40 years ago when she was diagnosed with Chron’s Disease. She discovered exercise and a healthy diet eased her symptoms, and for 20 years she has been symptom-free without medication.
Her brother’s diagnosis with a cancer that would not respond to conventional treatment inspired Tracy to research immunotherapy. Grief-stricken with her brother’s refusal to consider changing his diet and his subsequent death, Tracy turned her attention to sharing her message with children.
In addition, she created a nonprofit organization, the by KARRI Project, to create a solid foundation for the physical and emotional health of our future…starting with the very young.

Travel approximately 5 miles due east from where I live and you will discover the Chesapeake Bay with its many inlets and tributaries – just the sort of waterway pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries navigated with the intent of discovering (pilfering) and burying treasures.
Fast forward to today. Those of us who live near the Bay no longer fear pirates, but we still navigate the area discovering and burying treasures legally. We're playing a game today's guest describes as "hunting for Tupperware in the woods." It's geocaching.

Eric Ross Peterson is the CEO and founder of Seniors4Seniors, a nonprofit non-profit organization based in Colorado that connects high school and senior citizens with the goal of helping each party learn from and mentor each other.
His biography says, “As a caregiver in a senior community, I was made aware of the challenges which the senior residents I cared for were facing daily. In doing so I also became aware that our youth, especially those in their high school years, were also having these same challenges which are isolation, loneliness, and depression. I decided to [act], which brought me to the development of Seniors4Seniors, a program which brings together the older adults and youth in our communities, enabling enriching, real human connections. This program establishes connections between these individuals with shared interests, with a focus on career aspirations of the youth that correspond to career backgrounds of the older adults. This is a unique approach has truly enabled relationships that are truly touching the human heart and mind.

“We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Suzette Perez Tate is a modern-day grandmother from Southern California. She and her husband have a blended family and share five children, 5 grandchildren and a black Labrador named Bentley Boo.
Suzette and her granddaughter Charlotte share a special bond. One of the activities they enjoy together is reading. Suzette noticed right away that none of the books she was reading reflected their relationship. For starters, the grandmothers in the stories did not look like her, act like her and many times they were sick or dying, so after working in the telecommunications industry for almost 30 years, she decided to add the title children’s book author to her credentials and create a series of books that reflect modern day grandparents.
Her co-author is Anisa Delaluz, a post-production manager in the film and television industry. The mother of two sons, she hopes if she becomes a grandmother, she will live up to the standards set by her own super-hero grandmothers.

Adolescents begin to use marijuana, alcohol or other drugs for many reasons. Some use it to fit in with friends; others seek the drug out of curiosity or submit to peer pressure. Many, like the majority of our guest’s former patients, use it to relieve anxiety or some other intolerable feeling. Most adolescents are unaware of how marijuana adversely impacts their developing brain.
How do parents know if their children are using marijuana?
The National Institute on Drug Abuse recommends parents keep aware of changes in their children’s behavior. Declining grades, missing classes, loss of interest in things they once enjoyed or their favorite activities, changes in sleeping or eating habits, or getting into trouble in school or law enforcement could all be related to drug use or may indicate other problems.
If your children are using marijuana, the National Institute on Drug Abuse believes they might:
- seem unusually giggly and/or uncoordinated
- have very red, bloodshot eyes or use eye drops often
- have a hard time remembering things that just happened
- have drugs or drug paraphernalia – possibly claiming they belong to a friend
- have strangely smelling clothes or bedroom
- use incense and other deodorizers
- wear clothing or jewelry or have posters that promote drug use
- have unexplained lack of money or extra cash on hand.

Richard Capriola spent 11 years working as an addictions counselor for Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas, before retiring in 2019. Menninger Clinic is one of the top ten psychiatric hospitals in the United States and specializes in the assessment, stabilization and treatment of adults and adolescents with substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. During his tenure there he worked in the Adolescent Treatment program and the adult Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment and Stabilization program. Working closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses, he was responsible for comprehensive assessments and individual and group counseling with patients diagnosed with substance use disorders. Prior to working at Menninger Clinic, Capriola worked as a mental health crisis counselor in central Illinois.
Now retired, he lives with his wife in a suburb of Houston. He enjoys reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with his family. He has one son, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.

One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference by Katie Smith Milway Inspired by true events, One Hen tells the story of Kojo, a boy from Ghana who turns a small loan into a thriving farm and a livelihood for many.
After his father died, Kojo had to quit school to help his mother collect firewood to sell at the market. When his mother receives a loan from some village families, she gives a little money to her son. With this tiny loan, Kojo buys a hen.
A year later, Kojo has built up a flock of 25 hens. With his earnings Kojo is able to return to school. Soon Kojo's farm grows to become the largest in the region.
Kojo's story is inspired by the life of Kwabena Darko, who as a boy started a tiny poultry farm just like Kojo's, which later grew to be the largest in Ghana, and one of the largest in west Africa. Kwabena also started a trust that gives out small loans to people who cannot get a loan from a bank.
One Hen shows what happens when a little help makes a big difference. The final pages of One Hen explain the microloan system and include a list of relevant organizations for children to explore.

When putting together this episode of the podcast, I reflected on what my late husband and I had said we wanted for our children when they became adults.
We wanted them to be happy, healthy, and able to afford the toys they would want to buy. We wanted our sons and our daughter to be confident and kind, and we wanted them to know how to cook, to do their laundry, and to change a flat tire. We were not perfect parents, but as I watch my now adult children, I know we gave them a firm foundation and the skills they needed to become contributing members of society. In short, we raised emotionally competent people.
Emotional Competence is the focus of part one of today’s podcast. Positive discipline is the focus of part two. Each guest is an author, and each guest will give us tips on how to raise well-adjusted human beings.
Our first guest is Doug Noll, the author of the book De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less (Simon & Schuster, September 2017), which was the winner of the Book Excellence Award for 2017.
I invited him to be a guest because of his passion for teaching parents, grandparents and educators why understanding child development and using appropriate discipline strategies lead to children becoming resilient, emotionally competent adults.
For his innovative work, Doug Noll has been voted as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2005, by US News & World Report and has been recognized since 2006 as a Northern California Super Lawyer. He is listed in the Who’s Who of International Commercial Mediators. He has been honored as Lawyer of the Year in 2014 by Best Lawyers in America. In 2014, Doug was honored as a Purpose Prize Fellow by Encore.org. In 2018, Doug was named the Distinguished Neutral of the Year by The National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. Along with his colleague Laurel Kaufer, Doug Noll was named California Attorney of the Year in 2012 for their pro bono Prison of Peace project.

The Adventures with Grammy podcast is for grandparents who are on-the-go with their grandchildren. This podcast is for grandparents who want to hold special places in their grandchildren’s hearts and for parents who want to ensure loving relationships across the generations. I have six reasons for this project: Those reasons are my six grandchildren … Gavin, Cain, Channing, Hunter, Scarlett and Juliet. I want them to dream big! I am an advocate for travel adventures because I believe these experiences provide children opportunities for “stealth” learning and early career exploration ... key components of big dreams. What do I mean my stealth learning? Learning that takes places when children least expect it! They learn about fractions when baking cookies. They learn about science when baking sourdough bread. They learn about history when visiting a park. The children don’t realize they are learning because they are not sitting at a desk! They are having fun … and the learning sticks. When our children were young, my late husband and I took them on adventures. History came alive for them … they visited the White House and the Capitol; they saw the grist mill at Mount Vernon and money being printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They learned history, geography and science. I want to give my grandchildren those same experiences … and I want to help other grandparents do likewise. How can we expect our grandchildren to dream big if we don’t help them know what is possible for their adult lives? I am a retired high school teacher. I know first hand the importance of children having a vision for their future. Talking with children as young as five or six years old about their interests and showing them the real world will have a big impact on their education and career goals. Research shows a direct correlation between high school graduation rates and students who begin to explore career options in earnest during middle school. One of the adventures my grandchildren and I enjoyed was a visit to a chocolate factory. As we were leaving, one of my grandsons announced he planned to be a chocolatier when he grows up. Until that day he didn’t even know the word chocolatier, or that it was a career! Another grandson told his brother as they were leaving Dave & Busters that he wanted to work there when he grew up. His brother retorted, “You don’t want to work there, you want to OWN it!” Adventures definitely give children opportunities to DREAM BIG! In addition to stealth learning and career exploration, the Adventures with Grammy podcast aims to help grandparents answer three important questions: 1. How do I ensure a special place in my grandchild’s heart? 2. Where can I take my grandchildren that is budget-friendly, fun and educational for all of us? 3. How can I ensure the good times we share will become long-lasting memories my grandchildren will cherish forever? I have structured the podcasts as seasons. Each episode will feature guest interviews and three segments: 1. Children’s book reviews and/or interviews with children’s authors; 2. Fun activities to do at home with grandchildren and/or road trip adventures (day, weekend, or week-long) by geographic region; and 3. Memories of Our Grandparents We also will look at the grandparent experience. What is it like to be a grandparent in 2021? How has grandparenting changed since you were a child? How have grandparents changed? What are the expectations for today’s grandparents? We will discuss the importance of the grandparent-grandchild relationship. What does the research say? How has COVID-19 impacted grandparenting? How can grandparents influence a child’s education? Why is early career exploration important?
