Features the Dorado's. Father and son podcast about growing up through the path of music and life stories. The early episodes focus on stories from Johnny Dorado Sr. and his introduction to music, playing music, seeing music, and run-ins with musicians from local favorites to international superstars from the 1950's to present. True adventures of a mad man, my dad.
We're back and hope you all have been doing well! We had this one in the can, and we have one more to post until the new one that we recently recorded. So, be on the look out. We're planning on getting guests so we will keep you all posted as well... now on with the show. In the 12th episode, we start with a thank you to the Vetrans. Then we go into the time after the Airforce and moving from Vegas to LA (early 70's), getting back to work during those times, and the music scene. How my parents know Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, and getting back stage to see their live shows; a missed opportunity to jam with Jerry Garcia, the hippy invasion, peace and love, and jamming in Griffith Park...Enjoy! The 8th episode is part one of the Las Vegas experience from 68 to early 70s—but first we bring awareness to the Chicano Moratorium 50th Anniversary that was held on August 29th, which is a tribute to the death of Ruben Salazar. An activist, one of the first (of few) well known Mexican-American reporters, and who worked for the LA Times, was killed in 1970 by while covering the National Chicano Moratorium Against the Vietnam War—a protest for the disproportionate number of Mexican-Americans that were wounded or killed in the Vietnam War. So, it’s great to hear that the tribute continues and not to forget, especially during these times. With an important message to use your voice and power of opinion, and remember to VOTE…Thank you. Back to stories from Nellis Air Force Base and the Las Vegas experience; it just so happened that my Dad’s room at the barracks was the jam room, and working musicians would stop by. Then, telling like it is, and how the Mob treated their workers, which was better than you think…and my mom worked for one of the biggest mobsters around, Mr. Howard Hughes, at the Sand Hotel and Casino. Working at the Las Vegas Convention Center to see the Mohammad Ali fights. Going to the other side of town to see the best R&B, soul, and funk at Rubens. Segregation at the times, where the African-American musicians and performers were not allowed to stay at the main hotels. Hanging at the Silver Dollar to hear some Country music; and eventually playing there. The north side experience, and burlesque bar musicians. The gambling hustle. Scotch and water. The International Hotel (Current Westgate; former Las Vegas Hilton), where Elvis frequented, and many others. The opportunity to tour and play with the Checkmates—but family called. Catching the Ike and Turner show at the International, almost every night. Run-in with Red Foxx (yes the legendary comedian). The Pussy Cat A-GoGo. Fats Domino playing at my parents wedding—just listen. And how Fats Domino groomed Elvis to play in Las Vegas. I really enjoyed this one and I hope you do to...Enjoy! Cheers!

In the 7th episode, we start off with answering a question from a listener, cousin Shirley V, she asked, "Where is Johnny Otis from?". Then, we continue talking about my dad’s time serving in the Air Force, in Waco, Texas. Music at the time. Reminiscing about listening to the greats, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf—sometimes through the side door. Latin side of town. Lone star beers. Gar fishing and gigging. The benefit of working on the admin side of the Air Force; working for with the Commander and General. The Cellar…famous for rock, country, R&B, and blues...frequented by Jack Ruby…light bulbs that meant something (white, blue, and red)…and not letting my Dad and his African American buddy in…but their unit has their backs. Crossing the border and getting back, barely. The party before my dad’s unit got shipped out…the reason why I’m here. Closing with the wise words about the team effort and to get out vote...Enjoy!
