In this episode, Dr. Bryan Gill contemplates what it means to “consider the lilies” in his latest essay. From fly fishing the Cahaba River and standing in awe of how the beautiful Cahaba Lilies thrive through adversity to reminiscing on days of his childhood walking through flower gardens with his Grandaddy, lilies are a constant theme in this essay. What does it mean to “consider the lilies?” Bryan explores parenting, worry, fear, and enjoying life despite the craziness happening around us all when we stop to consider the lilies. We hope you will enjoy this essay and, whether it’s visiting the Cahaba River to gaze upon the Cahaba Lilies or strolling through your own backyard, take a moment to consider the lilies for yourself.

“‘Consider the Lilies’ is the only Commandment I ever obeyed.”

J. Wayne Fears grew up in the Cumberland Mountains roaming around on a mountain named Tater Knob. His dad was a trapper and an expert woodsman, and his mom was a country schoolteacher. From his dad, he learned to live in the wilds, and from his mom, he obtained a love of the written word. When other kids were playing team sports, J. Wayne was spending days, often alone, trapping, hunting, and fishing.

J Wayne served in the U.S. Army. After his time in the Army, he graduated from Auburn University and went to work as a wildlife specialist with the University of Georgia to develop wildlife resources in a rural test county in South Georgia. The resulting program was published as a feature article in the March 1966 issue of Outdoor Life magazine. This article gave J. Wayne and his work national attention and introduced him to the world of outdoor writing.

Wayne is a prolific writer, having written thousands of articles in nearly every major outdoor publication and 40 books. He is also an explorer, photographer, survivalist, hunter, and storyteller. If we listed all he has accomplished, it would be an entire podcast.

In this episode, we delve into the art of storytelling and survival skills and hear gripping tales of adventure, including one harrowing experience in the wilds of Canada where our guest, J. Wayne Fears, faced the ultimate test of survival. Joining us is Craig Haney, a long-time best friend of J Wayne, adding his unique perspective to our conversation. Settle in for a captivating discussion among friends, old and new, as we explore the depths of the great outdoors and the stories that define us.

In this episode, we had the opportunity to sit on the tranquil front porch of Robin Taylor. Robin is a staple in the outdoor community of Alabama and creates some of the most striking photography and paintings. Birds were chirping and woodpeckers were rattling as we rocked in our rocking chairs overlooking a quiet pond in front of Robin's house. It was a fantastic conversation and we covered a variety of topics.

We discussed everything from milky way photography to landscape and wildlife painting, exotic travel, his award-winning fishing lure collection, and synchronized fireflies. Robin's love for the outdoors and his quiet faith is so evident in how he treats people as well as how he cares for God's creation. We hope this episode encourages you to get outside and find your own adventures and write your own stories in the Storied Outdoors.

In this episode we talk to Andre Davis. Andre is an avid outdoorsman who finds peace and restoration in the demonstrative power of God's nature. He is a proud big brother, uncle, son and husband. Andre' has spent a lifetime outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, building, playing music and teaching. Married to a sixth grade teacher, his household is full of the desire to teach and lead our youth well, with the joyful expectation of watching them become better than ourselves. Andre' has a non-profit called Skillz and Gills where kids are taught the basics of fly fishing, how to set up a rig, fly casting, all about waterways, ecosystems, conservation, and fish handling. He’s a staple in the Alabama fly fishing community, a mentor of the Mayfly Project, an avid fly tier, and friend of the show.

Many of you may be surprised to know that Andre is also an excellent writer and storyteller. We’ve had the privilege of reading several of his personal essays and we talk about those on the show. We had Andre on once before at the international fly fishing film festival at Cahaba Brewery last year, but we wanted to extend our conversation with him this year. We know you will enjoy hearing from our friend, Andre Davis.

In this episode, we talk to David Parham about all of the amazing places in Alabama to find adventure. David grew up in Birmingham, attended college in Tuscaloosa, and currently lives in Huntsville working as an engineer. He grew up climbing and was driven outdoors by finding anywhere he could go climb. Climbing quickly turned him into a camper and as he would go climbing for a weekend and would need a place to sleep. Through camping and climbing he then turned into a waterfall hunter. Waterfalls served as a spectacular place to cool down while camping and climbing during summer. Waterfall hunting led to hiking and thus the process of finding waterfalls. When he’s not at home, at work, or at Jiu Jitsu, he loves exploring the outdoors with his 2 daughters and wife. They love spending time exploring North Alabama and seeing all the different views, caves, and waterfalls that it has to offer. David is an advocate for wild places and backyard adventures in the state of Alabama. We discuss being intentional about getting our children in the outdoors at an early age. As well as how sometimes the most beautiful places are the most unexpected places. Be sure to tune in to this episode with David, a.k.a. In this episode, we hear about two fishing trips to the same area with wildly different weather conditions. Brad explores the juxtaposition of real life and what's portrayed in social media, as well as how fishermen are generally at odds with the weather. Either way, it was exciting; fish were caught, and memories were undoubtedly made.

An undisturbed river is as perfect as we will ever know, every refractive slide of cold water a glimpse of eternity.”— Thomas McGuane

Fishing in rainy conditions may make fishermen seem crazy to the great mass of unimaginative people, but then few fishermen care what they think.”— John Gierach

In this episode, we had an opportunity to sit down with Mr. Craig Haney. If you’ve been around Alabama fly fishing for any length of time you’ve heard of Mr. Haney. This episode covers a lot of ground from lessons learned on the water to lessons, learned in life and everything in between. We had the opportunity to sit down in Craig’s man cave surrounded by fly fishing memorabilia, books, and fly tying materials as he graciously offered a little bit of his day to us. She has illustrated the likes of Audrey Bunny, A Little More Beautiful, and most recently, she illustrated a book in collaboration with our friends, Ken and Shay at Wolfbane Books entitled, The King of All Things. We cover the creative process, how the outdoors inspired so many of her works, and her complicated relationship with grief and inspiration. Dr. Brian Toone, assistant professor of computer science at Samford University joins us on the show this week. You may be wondering what a professor in computer science is doing on an outdoor podcast? Well, Brian is not only a brilliant professor, he is also an avid cyclist. And when I say avid, he’s at a different level than 99% of cyclists in America. Recently, Brian competed in the 2023 Paris-Brest-Paris cycling event, a 761-mile ride through France where he finished the endurance race in under 59 hours.

We’re going to get into that more during this conversation, as well as his performance in the Race Across America where he was the first American to finish that year and third overall. We also talk about one thanksgiving where he decided to ride his bike from Alabama to Michigan to be with his family for the holiday. You’ll enjoy this episode with Brian Toone even if you’re not a cyclist. We are so excited to share this conversation and the incredible things Dr. Toone is doing with the research he’s conducting as he rides.

Chis Hanson is the founder of 3GEngagement, a digital marketing company, bourbon connoisseur, sled dog Racer, and Fly fisherman extraordinaire. Chris grew up spending much of his time in Northern Minnesota, moving all over and living in more than one place without electricity and running water. He quit school in the 8th grade and pursued a life in the woods. During that time he fell in love with the world of training and racing sled dogs, which took him on a one-year journey of racing all over the Midwest, Canada, and Alaska.

Chris traveled a long road with many twists and turns through college, car sales, internet manager for a dealership, and eventually the E-commerce Director and digital Strategist.

A significant part of Chris’ story is highlighted in a short film called “The Day I Dis-remembered.” This film outlines a scary but redemptive chapter of his story, and How Fly Fishing played an integral role in his recovery. Ep 91: Sgt Amos Benjamin: Mental Health Advocate And Avid Outdoorsman Part 2

Sgt. Amos Benjamin

Sgt. Amos Benjamin is a former Marine, motivational speaker, and advocate for traumatic brain injury treatment and mental health. He recently told his story in an international bestseller book authored by Joey Jones, entitled Unbroken Bonds of Battle. Amos is a war hero, a father, husband, and a friend to many and in these two episodes, you’re going to hear an amazing story of heartbreak, survival and faith.

We were able to sit down with Amos in his home and hear this amazing story. We laughed together, we cried together, and some of what you were about to hear is almost unbelievable. This story was too long and too good to be just one episode, so we hope that you will stay tuned for both. You will be inspired, but we hope that you will leave with an appreciation for what so many men and women in uniform have done for our country. Also, there’s a pretty hilarious elk hunt story at the end, so stay tuned for both episodes as we hear from Amos Benjamin.

In this guest essay, entitled “Second Chances & the One that got Away,” Chase Bowers recalls a fishing trip he took as a young boy with his grandfather and father. This fishing trip proved to be the catalyst that drove a wedge between he and his dad. But, like many complicated relationships, the worst doesn’t have to be the end. And in this story, the best was yet to come, even with the one that got away. This second chance essay is a beautiful story of grace and family. We hope you enjoy it.

Jimbo Meador: A naturalist, Sailor, Storyteller, and Fly Fisherman

Jimbo Meador is one of the most iconic figures in the sport of fly fishing. As a lifelong Alabamian, living along the gulf coast, Jimbo has arguably influenced the sport of fly fishing as much as anyone else in the last century. From kayak fishing, paddleboard fishing, retail Orvis stores, and a host of other areas, Jimbo’s hand is evident in the history and future of the sport. Not to mention that his life heavily influenced the character of Forrest Gump, written by his good friend and author Winston Groom. We hope you will enjoy this episode where we sat down with Jimbo in his home office and soaked up all the stories and wisdom he shared with us.

“ Whenever I find myself growing grim...I quietly take to the ship. Almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.”— Herman Melville

“A Free Boat And A Magical Experience” explores what riding a bike, a drift boat, and a flats skiff all have in common. From Monroeville, Ala. to two iron man triathlons, Brad has spent many miles on this magical machine called the bicycle, and from the Tallapoosa with Craig Godwin of East Alabama Fly Fishing to the Flathead in Montana, he’s experienced the enchanting feeling of fishing from a drift boat. But on one magical night in December and from the kindness of a group of Christian men, he received the thrill of owning his own skiff boat. A magical experience indeed.

Brad reflects on each of these experiences and how they connect him to place. However, the ultimate goal for Brad was to do his best to communicate the incredible experience and feelings of being given the most unforeseen gift he could have imagined and the gratitude he feels for those who went in together to give this unreal gift. We hope you enjoy this essay from Brad.

Born and raised in North Alabama, just minutes away from the foothills of Tennessee, Brandon Bailes can still call this beautiful rural setting home alongside his wife, two sons, and two adventurous dogs. Growing up he spent countless hours hunting, fishing, trapping, and exploring the woods and streams around his house and he hasn’t stopped even to this day.... He says, “I’m convinced that the woods and water make you a student for life.”Brandon works full-time for NASA but on the side he is a pure artist when it comes to tying flies. He is a commercial fly designer for Fulling Mills, he sits on tyer boards for several companies like Ahrex hooks, HMH Vises, and Dr Slick tools to name a few. His flies have been featured in several books “Smallmouth Flies- Top to Bottom” by Jake Villwock and Aaron Reed’s “Flyfishing Austin and Central Texas”We talked on a previous episode about our time catching our first smallmouth bass on the fly with our pal Wade Blevins; on that same trip we had the pleasure of meeting Brandon and he gave us a couple of his incredible flies. We are honored for him to join us on the podcast. We hope you will enjoy this episode.

You don’t fully understand fatherhood until you’re a father. And even then, you’re just doing the best you can with what you have. In this essay, Dr. Gill reflects on lessons his dad taught him about fishing, fatherhood, and sacrifice. He also laments his failure to having yet landed an Alabama trout—a feat his two young children have both accomplished. Bryan has understood varying levels of sacrifice over the years, but two nights in Arkansas, a Great Lion, and a fishing trip helped him to truly grasp this peculiar concept. We hope you’ll enjoy this essay entitled, “Alabama Trout and the Deeper Magic,” written by Dr. Bryan Gill and read by Brad Hill.

Ep Stephen Rockarts: Fly Fishing Alabama

Stephen Rockarts is the owner and lead guide with Fly Fishing Alabama guide service. With his unceasing passion for fly fishing, he primarily targets several native species of fish such as Alabama Bass and the Storied Redeye Bass. Pound for pound these fish are some of the strongest fighting fish you will encounter. They live in the most beautiful untouched waters that Alabama has to offer. His trips lead people on an adventure to encounter these tremendous native species. Not only is he a gifted guide but he is also passionate about hospitality, offering an incredible creekside burger that turns the best days fishing and some of the worst days fishing into a good time on the water. Funny how a good burger will do that. Although I have never had the pleasure of enjoying one of those burgers, I salivate everytime one pops up on my instagram feed. One day we will have to remedy that.

Stephen serves as a Cahaba River ambassador, and as a Calico fly rods Pro guide. We cover in the episode how much of an impact our pal Wade Blevins has had on Stephen as he serves as a Sam’s one bug pro angler. Fun fact it is because of Stephen that I learned about the Sam’s one bug. He is also the Vice Chair on the board of Native fish coalition. He is a newly inducted member of the River rat rafts pro guide team and also a Cortland line pro angler. The thing I love about Stephen is his love for his family and desire to be present with them. He takes being a Dad seriously.

We cover so much in this episode and we laughed a great deal. If anyone has spent anytime around Stephen he will make you feel good about yourself and have a good time. I have no doubt that translates to his guide service. We discuss his gifting in hospitality and what role that plays in guiding along with his philosophy of what are components of a great trip. Obviously we had to spend some time in discussion about the shore burger and Stephen gives out some secret tips on what makes it so special. I promise you won’t want to miss this episode.

Grab a cup of hot chocolate and cozy up by the fire for this episode of The Storied Outdoors as Brad Hill reads “Hidden Wonders,” a short story written by Dr. Bryan Gill. “Hidden Wonders” follows the Heatherford’s, a family whose plans were thwarted by an unexpected blizzard that grounded all southbound flights out of New York—including theirs. With limited options, they decide to drop in on their eccentric Uncle Doc for the holidays. While this was not their original plan for Christmas, it might just be the one they needed to restore their children’s fading Christmas spirit. We hope you enjoy this story and have a Merry Christmas!

“One Horse Open Sleigh” by Dr. Bryan Gill is inspired by the original lyrics of “Jingle Bells,” that read, “A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side…” Bryan wrote this story about two little girls and a mahogany Clydesdale that loved nothing more than pulling a shiny red sleigh in the snow. The horse changes the lives of the little girls, but that’s not the only transformation that takes place. Enjoy this story that takes a peek into the fictional life of the iconic Christmas card image of a horse-drawn sleigh.

When he’s not painting or designing, he enjoys watching the woods wake up, and long canoe rides on southern piedmont streams. We hope you enjoy this episode where we talk about one of the most horrifying encounters with a bear we’ve ever heard. And we also talk about art and the Alabama fly fishing community. Ep: 62 Tacos and The Gathering of Wild Dogs

"The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal." C.S. Lewis The Weight of Glory

In this essay, Dr. Gill recalls a time when he heard a pack of coyotes howling in the woods while hunting. That haunting memory caused him to reflect on the reason behind the call of the wild dogs at night and how they’re drawn to community. This need for community is present in all of our lives and for Bryan, it has been found around the dinner table, in a river, and with likeminded creatives. We hope you enjoy this reflection and are encouraged to reflect on your own communities.

Ep 59: Tom Rosenbauer: Host of Orvis Fly fishing Guide Podcast & Author joins us on this episode. What an honor it was to sit down with this fly fishing icon and discuss fishing local waters as well as the allure of the exotic trip. Bryan and Brad have been sitting on this episode for a while and were able to tell Tom about the great work Matt Lewis (and many others) in Alabama are doing to bring awareness to the feisty Alabama-native Redeye Bass. Also, Tom recalls an epic trip where risking frostbite was worth “just one more cast.” And we get to ask him about the possibility of ever writing a memoir on his storied life. The answer may surprise you! Join us for this episode and be sure to share it with a friend you think would enjoy it.

We have often discussed the joy of sitting around the campfire and inviting it is for telling stories. After looking around, we found an article discussing the health benefits of looking in the flames of a fire.  In this episode, we meet Dr. Christopher Lynn, professor of anthropology at the University of Alabama, and hear about his research on the benefits of fire gazing. We also discover that the name "Caveman TV" actually has scientific facts to back it up as accurate. Through this discussion about the science of looking at a fire, we find out why we feel the way we do when we sit around a fire and why we are more inclined to tell stories with those gathered around. In this episode, we travel with Brad and his family from Alabama to Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park. While driving home from this family adventure, Brad and his wife Paige are in a bit of disbelief that they actually did it.

The long road trip provided valuable time to reflect on all that had passed and perhaps bask in the glow of having accomplished what they thought was out of reach. This reflection rendered some valuable lessons that will propel the Hill clan toward more adventures and stories. You won't want to miss this one!

Steve Davis knows first hand what it's like to grow up as a kid who experienced trauma. So, it was no surprise to many when he started a nonprofit, On River Time, in 2012, that helps kids who have survived abuse and neglect find clarity about their past and see the future God has for them. Coupled with his love of fly fishing, Steve and the incredible volunteers and staff at On River Time use fly fishing as "a means of connecting with each child." The Nine Mile Ride

“It’s been true in my life that when I’ve needed a mentor, the right one shows up.” –Ken Blanchard

In this essay episode, Dr. Gill reflects on the impact cycling and mentors have had in his life over the years. This essay covers a lot of territory from learning to ride a bike for a cub scout bike-a-thon in the 80s, to a hilarious encounter with Bo Jackson at Bo Bikes Bama in 2016, to riding the New York City Five-Boros ride in 2022. Over the years, cycling has been a way for Bryan to gain clarity through the outdoors. This was never more true than when Bryan had a transformative nine-mile-ride that rocked his world in 2018.

Andy Blanks is the Co-Founder and Publisher for Iron Hill Press. He is an author, speaker, former marine, avid outdoorsman, woodworker, and podcast host. He lives in Birmingham, AL with his wife, Brendt, and their four children. The best way to describe Andy is that he’s the most published author you’ve never heard of. He’s authored dozens of books and sold hundreds of thousands, but my favorite way to describe him is that he’s been a mentor and friend of mine for nearly 24 years. When Bryan was a junior in high school in Eufaula, Alabama, Andy was a college student and his disciple now leader at First Baptist Eufaula. They reconnected when Bryan was in grad school in Birmingham and have been writing books together since then.

Andy Blanks dons many a moniker : Father. Husband, Author. Speaker. Podcast host. Co-founder of YM360 & Iron Hill Press. Co-host of The Big, Full, Fun Podcast. Marine. Self described Sub-par but impassioned runner. We hope you enjoy this conversation we were blessed to have with Andy.

In this essay, Bryan recalls a frightening night where he was lost in a swamp as a teenager. Reflection and journaling helped him to more fully understand this event and others. Reflection and journaling have been a big part of Bryan’s adulthood and in this essay, he offers insights into the practice of both. We hope you will enjoy this episode entitled, “Alone in the Dead Marshes,” written by Dr. Bryan Gill and read to you by Brad Hill.   “No Man is an Island.”  No man is an island entire of itself;  every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;  if a clod be washed away by the sea,  Europe is the less,  as well as if a promontory were,  as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were;  any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.  And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;  it tolls for thee.  John Donne,

Ed Litton is the 63rdt President of the Southern Baptist Convention; more importantly, since 1994, he has Pastored Redemption Church in Saraland, Alabama, faithfully shepherding many, including my in-laws, for many years. Although there is much more we could include in this bio, He is also an avid fly fisherman, photographer, and all-around outdoor adventurer.

We cover lots of topics in our conversation with Ed, from such a busy schedule, and how you find rest and sabbath—to navigating the death of his wife of 25 years.

As an all-around outdoorsman and lover of adventure, Ed shared with us some photography stories about an incredible picture he was fortunate to capture from the bottom of the Grand Canyon and seeing a white Buffalo. Both Bryan and I love photography, so we geeked out a little on the technical side of how you capture the night sky with your camera and whether you prefer landscape or wildlife.

One of our favorite topics on the podcast, if you have listened for any time, is fly fishing. Ed joins us in our love for fly fishing and shares some of his favorite places where he can fish. Idaho continues to come up in our conversations, and Bryan and I feel the call to Idaho to fish, so if you know anyone out there, put us in contact with them.

We had such a splendid time getting to know Pastor Ed Litton. Ed shared a photo album filled with photos we talked about, along with some of his favorites, including a few of the beautiful fish he has caught over the years.

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul. -John Muir In this episode, Brad reflects on beauty and where we find it—looking back at his trip to Wyoming and his weekly experience in Mobile, on Bolton Branch near his office. This essay is chocked full of fishing stories, including a personal best brown trout in an epic place, discovering a gem of a place to fish right in his back yard, and reflections on the idea of beauty. This sparked some questions for lots of self reflection about looking harder for what perhaps is hidden beauty all around us that we could be missing. The trip out to Wyoming cultivated a healthy reflection on evaluating my schedule and creating more margin for conversation and enough time to be known. “ There is no place on earth without the potential for unearthing holiness. This season begins with an incredible guest and author, the lovely Patti Callahan Henry. What an honor to have Patti with us to kick off this season on The Storied Outdoors. Patti is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of sixteen novels and podcast host. She is the recipient of The Christy Award — A 2019 Winner “Book of the Year”; The Harper Lee Distinguished Writer of the Year for 2020 and the Alabama Library Association Book of the Year for 2019. She is the co-host and co-creator of the popular weekly online Friends and Fiction live web show and podcast. Patti is also a contributor to the weekly life lesson essay column for Parade Magazine. A full-time author and mother of three children, she now resides in both Mountain Brook, Alabama, and Bluffton, South Carolina with her husband. Along with all of Patti's accolades, she brings a wealth of knowledge about one of our favorite authors, C.S. Lewis. Having written two Lewis-adjacent books, Patti has an extensive knowledge of the more intricate details of Lewis' life. It was so fun to pick her brain about a shared literary hero of ours. We also dive into her other writings and discuss how place is such an important part of every story. She writes, “Landscape holds our collective memories in the curve of its hand. Offering them to us whenever we pay attention and at the same time we hold landscapes in the hidden places of our individual memories and stories.” We know you will enjoy this episode with Patti Callahan Henry as much as we did. We are fired up to start a fresh season of stories and interviews for the fourth season of The Storied Outdoors. We are joined today by one of our previous guests, Dr. Hugh Cheek who graciously and courageously shared his story of suffering and life with us. Our other special guest has been a huge encouragement to Brad in this venture and one of his dearest friends in life, pastor of Temple Bible Church in Temple, TX., Chase Bowers. We're certain you'll enjoy getting to know these fellas a little better.

Both Hugh and Chase joined Bryan and Brad along with a couple of other fishermen in north Georgia in the fall of 2021 for a fishing trip and some time of rich fellowship and adventure. This episode serves as an intro for season four, but also recounts their trip to North Georgia and some of their more memorable highs and lows along the way.

We recorded this episode on the February 2nd, and in honor of Black History Month, the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kick us off. He said, “The major problem of life is learning how to handle the costly interruptions. The door that slams shut, the plan that got sidetracked, the marriage that failed. Or that lovely poem that didn't get written because someone knocked on the door.”

We hope you'll enjoy this episode as we laugh and lament the misadventures of our north Georgia fishing trip.

Kyle Beshears is campus pastor of Mars Hill Church in Mobile, Alabama. He holds a PhD from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, teaches courses on religion at the University of Mobile, and is author of the recently published "Apatheism: How We Share When They Don't Care." Kyle’s favorite spaces for sabbath are in the cockpit of a kayak and among the peace of woodland trails.

We cover a lot of ground in our conversation with Kyle! We talk about his time living in Europe and one particular adventure during a pilgrimage in Spain called “The Camino de Santiago,” where he encountered all manner of Characters and we hear his reflections on this journey. We also spend some time hearing from Kyle about his experiences getting into kayaking in the vast waterways of Mobile, AL and the gulf coast.

We end our conversation hearing about Kyles latest book from B&H Publishing entitled “Apatheism.”

How can you share the gospel with someone who doesn’t care? As Western culture becomes increasingly indifferent to questions of faith, diverted by secularism, comfort, and distraction, believers encounter many people who don’t so much doubt God as they are apathetic toward him. In Apatheism, Kyle Beshears urges us to recapture the joy of our salvation and demonstrates how to faithfully display the love of Christ to apatheist friends and neighbors.

When most Alabamians think about Lake Martin as a place to vacation, Emily Johnson thinks of it as home. Growing up on the water and being an artist, Emily naturally gravitated to painting fish. While this was not always her focus, 2020 presented an opportunity to move away from the medical field and pursue a full time career as an artist, an artist who paints fish… and the occasional waterfowl.

This episode gives listeners an insight into the process of painting and what inspired her to make this shift. With the help of her husband, an avid fly fisherman, and three young children who are almost old enough for more adventures, Emily hopes to paint all, or at least most, of the fish found in the waterways of Alabama.

Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” In this essay, Dr. Gill recalls the story of a photography trip he took with his first camera, a Pentax K1000. While this story didn't end the way he had hoped, it was redeemed 25 years later when he had a second chance at photographing a beautiful red fox. Now, when he looks at that fox, he sees much more than the photo, he sees the heartache and joy that that image evokes.

The title, "There and Back Again: Chapter 80," is taken from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. There and Back Again is the title of Bilbo Baggins' memoir that Frodo is tasked to finish. However, Chapter 80 of this red leather covered manuscript is unwritten and that is where one story ends and another begins.

Be sure to listen as Brad Hill artfully reads this essay written by Dr. Bryan Gill entitled, "There and Back Again: Chapter 80."

In this episode we meet Todd Henrikson the Pro cycling director for Athletes In Action. Todd raced competitively for twelve years in the sport that brought him to the World Championships, U.S. U-23 National Team, and two years at the professional level. Yet, during his career there wasn’t a sports chaplain or ministry pouring into pro cyclists. Todd and Tabitha desired to change the tide by launching AIA Pro Cycling in 2012 after seeing a desperate need for there to be emotional and spiritual support for athletes across the sport of cycling.

In this conversation we hear about Todd's journey into the world of cycling, and the tail of one of his most spectacular crashes. As we unpack this story we hear just how he has been shaped by his time in the saddle and how he is now moving to Spain to share life with pro cyclist racing on the European circuit.

A story of three different experiences woven together by three rivers, this episode Brad shares about how his time on these rivers serve as a reminder to the goodness he has experienced. We all need to practice remembrance for when tough times set in, these experiences of goodness serve as monument to help us remember “It won’t always be this hard.” The story tells  a small portion of his experience attending Hutchmoot , a conference hosted by the good folks of the Rabbit Room, where he sat next to the Harpeth River in fellowship with new and old friends.  The story then journeys  to Montana where he officiated a wedding for a young couple from his church, and then how he was fortunate to fly fish on the Flathead river the next day. An incredible string of events all close together and next to rivers.

We wanted to start this season out with a bang and boy did we! In this episode, we sit down with New York Times Bestselling Author, Charles Martin and discuss writing, bow hunting, and how growing up in the outdoors has helped shape Charles' writing into some of the most vivid and compelling stories in bookstores today. Some of the books Charles has written include: The Mountain Between Us, The Water Keeper, The Letter Keeper, and When Crickets Cry, just to name a few. We dive into a conversation with Charles about the writing process, how it changes you, how difficult it is, and how we are meant for a garden--we are meant to be outside. We also talk about archery and the great organization of Mission Bows by Mathews. Learn more about Mission by Mathews on their website.

Here's a little more about Charles from his website- Christy and I married in 1993. If you include dating, I’ve known and loved her for more than half my life. She is and always will be the home for my heart. We have three boys. Charlie, John T. and Rives. Folks often ask me, which of my books do I like the best. You might as well line up my sons and ask me who I love the most. My hobbies are bow hunting, working out (a blend of old school stuff and martial arts, called Fight Fit) and Tae Kwon Do. In October 2012 I earned my black belt but I’m still the least flexible person you’ve ever met. The guy that trains me, laughs every time I start warming up. My boys are far better at Tae Kwon Do than I but I doubt they have as much fun.

Welcome to season three of The Storied Outdoors! This episode is a little bit of a hybrid, and not the type of hybrid bass Brad and Bryan caught on the fishing trip down the Tallapoosa River either. This episode is an introduction to season three, a recap of season two, and the retelling of a fishing trip that Brad and Bryan had over the summer with Craig Godwin at East Alabama Fly Fishing. We also talk about the Release of Bryan's first novel, The Devils in Alabama.

As for Craig Godwin and the boys at East Alabama Fly Fishing, you can't beat their hospitality and ability to put you on aggressive bass that will explode on a top water bugs. Heck, these bass even exploded on streamers! If you're looking for a fun trip on pristine waters in the state of Alabama, give these guys a call. They'll treat you right.

Not only is Craig a great fishing guide, he is one of the best photographers I've seen. His work is incredible. Check him out here at Craig Godwin Photography.

Bryan's novel, The Devils in Alabama is a southern suspense novel set in Alabama. Main character, Drake Tatum is in desperate need of money to pay off a debt he owes, but his measly income as a newspaper intern in Birmingham, Alabama isn't enough. With resignation letter in hand and every intention to seek a job with better pay, his fiery female boss drags him on an assignment to investigate the sudden rise of sports betting halls in the state—a world he knows well from his gambling habit. Fueled by the guilt of a childhood accident and obligated to fund his father’s opioid addiction, Drake's thirst for money sinks him deeper into the sinister underbelly of Alabama. Will he be consumed by the tangled web of illegal gaming, drug trafficking, corrupt politicians, football, and religion? Or will he reconcile the guilt of his past and escape the grip of these devils? The Devils in Alabama is available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle. To read more of the first pages of this novel, visit Bryan's website.

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

— C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

The Virginia born pro cyclist and wildlife photographer Ben King joins us for a conversation to talk all things outdoors and their impact in his life. When Ben isn’t ascending the mountains on the European cycling tours he lives in Italy with his wife and newborn child. He is what Bryan and I call “our people.” Ben loves to hunt and fish, an admitted birder, and gifted photographer. In this episode we cover his experiences in cycling and how the outdoors has been a space for him to slow down from a profession that is always at full speed. Ben reflects on how birding has genuinely driven him to worship. He recognized that the joys of the outdoors are a gift and joy from God but also a foretaste of the feast that is to come.

A Beautiful Interruption: Essay By Dr. Bryan Gill Read by Brad Hill.

Sometimes life forces you to slow down. That’s not always a bad thing. In the fall of 2020, Bryan was forced to slow down. But, after a fishing trip, a bald eagle, and a plane ride, he learned a valuable lesson about taking care of himself. Self-care, soul-care, me time; call it what you want, it’s important. In this essay, Bryan reflects on these events and the beauty of the mundane that he encountered on a kayaking trip with his family.

About a year ago, Brad and Bryan went on a fishing trip to Blue Ridge, Ga. On that trip, the idea of The Storied Outdoors podcast was born. Inspired by an audio book by John Gierach that they’d listened to on the trip, Bryan sat down and wrote his reflections about the trip in the form of an essay. Thus was born, “Persistence on the Toccoa,” the first essay written for The Storied Outdoors. Tune in Monday for this reflection of a great trip, a great fish, and a frightening ending.

In this episode of TSO we are privileged to hear from Petty Officer Bart Valle and his experience flying in the middle of Hurricane Harvey. When Hurricane Harvey a Category 4 hurricane made landfall on Texas and Louisiana in August 2017, Bart Valle and the USCG were called into action. Harvey released more precipitation than any other tropical cyclone in U.S. History. Making landfall on three separate occasions, Harvey dumped as much as 52 inches of rain on Texas and Louisiana. Bart and his crew deployed ahead of Harvey’s landfall to make ready for the task at hand. They  took off flying into Hurricane Harvey at its peak, battling 45 knot winds, visibilities of less than 1/4 mile, low ceilings, and torrential rains. To make matters more difficult they were flying in an unfamiliar, challenging urban landscape, dodging power lines and tall tress.  Bart along with his crew were instrumental in the rescue of 102 souls. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Bart on this episode. Essay- Proper Motivation

In this episode of TSO, we hear Brad's story about competing in a 70.3 Ironman Triathlon. Usually, that alone would be an action-packed story, but it doesn't end there. On the same day of the race, Brad boards a plane to New Delhi, India, to take part in mission work through his church hours after crossing the finish line. Reflecting on this series of unusual events, Brad explores a question about what motivates people to do what they do.

Courtney is an ultra-runner and two-time 100-mile finisher. She lives in Memphis, Tenn., but can usually be found anywhere between the Colorado Rockies and the foothills of the Appalachians burning up the trails with her sweet puppy, Lucy. Give her a follow on Twitter and Instagram @cmmunson.

In this episode of TSO, we interview ultra-marathoner, Courtney Munson about her experience running two 100-milers and the three letters every competitor fears-DNF. Courtney helps explain the sense of accomplishment that comes from never quitting and offers insights into the mental aspect of these grueling races.

One fun fact about Courtney is that in 2013, she helped Bryan’s wife, Sarah run her fastest marathon to date in Louisville, Kentucky. With Courtney’s help as a pacer, Sarah crushed her previous PR by an hour, finishing at 4:01:04. And when I tell you she laid it all on the course that day, she laid it all on the course that day…literally. Bryan took a photo of the two of them crossing the finish line and Sarah had her hand over her mouth with a cheek full of that morning’s breakfast. Courtney’s face was priceless. I imagine her thinking, “Oh no. She’s going to vomit. She’s going to vomit. Please don’t vomit on me. Please don’t vomit on me.” Sarah did vomit, but not on Courtney…thankfully.
