PERMANENT DEACON TALKING with Deacon Tom Simms ~ is a compilation spirituality, prayer and worship kind of Podcast.I have no original ideas or new thoughts but I act as a 'Good News Salvage Hunter'. I scour old books and the world wide web for items to restore, refurbish and retell through these homily pods. It started with inspiration from Fr Dan Crosby OFM.Cap ,Fr Dan Goergen O.P.,Ph.D and music created by Mike Anderson. The Homily Pods are based on the Sunday Mass readings. Their purpose is to provide an opportunity for reflection in order to invite the Holy Spirit once more into our busy lives.There is no pressure here. Relax, you are in charge. Allow the words and music and the peace of creation to speak to your heart.The Centering prayer introduced during Advent Week Three and Blessed Solanus's Spiritual Communion I have found to be invaluable in my own situation.Adapt these as you wish.It might be helpful to spend a minute or two with the Sunday readings before listening in order to let anything there touch your heart and speak to you personally, deep in your soul.The wonderful music are the Hymns of Mike Anderson, who along with everyone involved has given full permission for personal works to be included for the benefit of all. St Luke’s Gospel has formed the basis of our readings this year and in it we have been given a number of tips about prayer and the relationship Jesus had with the broken, suffering and downtrodden. He takes care to describe Christ’s welcome of those ignored by society and those who were readily excluded by the elders and ignored by others. They included women, children, the poor, tax collectors, prostitutes, the sick, broken and the weak. To all of these Jesus offers salvation, strength and spiritual recovery.

There is a great pre- Raphaelite painting by Holman Hunt called The Light of The World, showing the Lord Jesus knocking at a door, holding a lantern, hoping for someone, no restrictions , no conditions to open the door just a little and all the light would enter into their life. Jesus embraced all and spoke about his Kingdom of Love that allowed all the different birds of the air to shelter in its branches.

We are still in the first chapter of Mark and he can’t stop telling us how different Jesus is concerning all this. Jesus is proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is near, He brings good news that God brings compassion and love, mercy and forgiveness. Jesus responds to suffering by healing, touching and forgiving. He becomes close and present to anyone who is hurtIng. He helps the put down and accused to stand up again and shows them their dignity and worth.

Sunday 4 - Year B
In the first Century the most common political power system in operation was the idea of a monarchy. When the Hebrew nation wanted to ascribe power to God it was an obvious mechanism to copy the image of a king. Jesus began his teaching with a purpose to proclaim that the Kingdom of God was on it’s way. Jesus made it clear that his kingdom was for the poor and would establish justice. Mark wanted everyone to know that, from the very beginning ,Jesus brought this about by his words, actions and very presence. Jesus was ready and able to confront evil and win the spiritual battle for the human heart.

Sunday 3 - Year B
At the Second Vatican Council the church defined itself as the mystery of the Kingdom of God present today. It was stated then that the Kingdom first shone out before men “in the words, in the works and in the presence of Christ.” The small group of men on the hill in Galilee can be seen, therefore, as the first community of Church because they were committed to Jesus who stood at the centre of their lives.

Andrew and Peter in today’s gospel had been keen to meet the Messiah for years. They didn’t know what he looked like but if the opportunity arose they were not going to miss out. In fact Andrew had become a disciple of John the Baptist and would have learned a great deal from him about “the lamb of God”. When Jesus was pointed out as such, he knew it was time to follow his new “Rabbi” and rushed to tell his brother as soon as he could.

William Barclay, who produced a DailyStudy Bible on the Gospel of Matthew, makes a point about the place of material possessions from an earlier saying of Jesus about no person being able to be the slave to two masters. Is this behind the seemingly innocent question , asked in all politeness? “Tell us, is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor , or not?”There are a couple of principles at stake here.

Isaiah like Jesus liked to use popular songs and stories from his past and then re-tell them with a twist or a punchline for his current audience. This helped to make a point on an important topic that could be remembered easily. Isaiah wanted to explain God's ultimate saving purpose in history and used the banquet to explain the special day of joy when all will be put right.

We were talking about fairness and the Kingdom of Heaven last week and here we have our old friend Ezekial speaking for the lord on exactly the same subject. The House of Israel is complaining , just like the workers in the vineyard, that God's ways are unfair. We are also given more information about the ways of the world being different to 'spirit -led thinking' and, as if in answer to the calls for 'fair play', we are given a get out clause by Jesus. He explains how we can always be given a clean slate if we change our minds after finding ourselves impulsively on the wrong path. Some really 'good news' today then.

The idea is that when looking for mercy, don't be sidetracked into thinking you can bargain, or have to do something special first, or that it is too late anyway, “ for he will abundantly pardon”, says Isaiah, so call upon the Lord, shout out and turn around and face the Lord who will always forgive. Isaiah is advocating 'Spirit - led thinking' when it comes to the Lord because these are “ not your thoughts...not your ways”. The abundant mercy and goodness freely administered by the Lord is not open to what we do, or what the world might see as fair play. The same mercy is give to anyone who asks, whenever they ask.

Gospel JOHN 17:1-11
The two excerpts chosen from todays scripture are very important in understanding the Ascension and how we could react to it with love, truth and joy like the Apostles and Mary. This is a time of ending and a time of new beginning and both can be stressful even traumatic. Luke chose the Ascension to be the last event in his Gospel and the first point in his account of the Acts of the Apostles, showing how significant this time after the Resurrection is to Mary and the 11 Apostles who are all named here. Mary makes the Apostles into a whole group again their number being 12 once more. In many ways we look at Mary during May, particularly with pilgrimages to Lourdes being planned and completed. She is the one who completes our journey to Jesus. She has been with him every step of the way and beyond. Today we still see her as one who can support us in times of stress or family struggles, in sickness and in health providing a means of prayer and intercession. Lets not forget Our Blessed Lady was present with Jesus in all of this.

I like to think that Thomas was a very practical Apostle. If he had to learn a computer programme he would probably need someone to show him how to do it rather than rely on just being told. He was probably a kinaesthetic type of learner who would also benefit from some extra visual stimulus when trying to grasp something new.

There is a beautiful hymn written by Martin Nystrom that begins, “As the deer pants for water so my soul longs after you”. It is a haunting melody that suits a flute and acoustic guitar in particular. The hymn tells of the thirst for the love of God that haunts every soul and when not thought to be satisfied creates a longing and pain worse than any thirst.

Martha and Mary are like these words of the motto. How different would the situation be if they had first planned how they could co-operate in both showing hospitality and both paying full attention to Jesus. Their efforts together could have afforded time for both to serve the food and drink and both to sit and listen to their guest. What stops this ideal is the surfacing of what has come to be called a vice.Any good thing can be twisted into a temptation which if followed can damage us a little. A vice constantly followed can damage us viciously.

The parable of the Good Samaritan can be looked at in all sorts of ways .
Advice on kindness and social concern or how not to be a hypocrite or too caught up in our self importance to be delayed from our more worthwhile plans.
One interpretation I found to be useful is to see the story as an encounter with Jesus himself who wants everyone to be like him. To imitate his compassion and works of mercy. Could the Good Samaritan be Jesus himself.?
The spiritual life of undulations . The difficult thing to understand is that sometimes it is on the lowest point that an encounter with Jesus can occur with an offer to enter into the love shared in the Trinity.
What if we looked at the parable this way as if we were on a path searching for holiness but being tempted on all sides and distracted by the attractions along the way.

Imagine being a Jewish citizen 2000 years ago, in the presence of Jesus every day. Imagine eating with him, walking with him, watching him, talking with him, listening to him. Yes, it would be incredible and surely we would know exactly what he was about and come to realise, with certainty who he was? If he looked you the eye and said ‘Follow me”, surely we would give up everything in order to follow him. Or are we deluding ourselves? Wouldn’t we be just like the crowds and disciples who were quite unsure about his identity. We might want a little more assurance before making the full life commitment and be happy to go along with the theories being portrayed as to his nature for now? In any case wouldn’t we want to put our houses in order before leaving everything behind?

Genesis tells us about Melchizedeck, the priest and king of old, who points to the kingly function of Jesus.. Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire explains the sacrificial aspect of how and why this ancient priest brought bread and wine and singled the priesthood of Melchizadeck was thought to be king of Salem. In John’s revelation today we have the wonderful vision of the Holy City –the New Jerusalem –the place of peace. When all the saved are joined together on the bedrock of the Apostles. In this ‘Jerusalem of lights’, there is no need of any Temple. The presence of the Lord God and the Lamb make the whole city a sacred area with the Holy Spirit shining like diamonds from the hearts of all the residents.

A retreat given by a Jesuit priest made the point that the words found in Isaiah mentioned earlier are like love letters sent from God who keeps on saying “ I give myself to you”. The retreat master Fr Greg also provided exercises for ways in which we can listen for God in everyday situations where he pours out gifts of love throughout our lives if we are prepared to look for them. It could be our parents , or a sunny trip abroad, the smell of a BBQ, a grandmother and her grandchild, an ocean liner, a blue sky. One aim of the retreat was to then be thankful for these gifts every day once you had recognised them for what they are. This is how God love us and is the way we fulfil the commandment of Jesus to love one another. As I have loved you. That is with great generosity and gratitude.

“John saw a large number, impossible to count, of people from every nation”. These people had suffered but were promised to be led to springs of living water. There are two unusual images presented in this selection of John’s Revelation story. The first image is of a group of people from every race who have been persecuted and a second image of the same people being told they will never be plagued by anything again.

Why did Thomas, the faithful servant and disciple of Christ cry out from the depth of his love:
“ You are my Lord and my God!”. Where does this faith come from?
Jesus said to him :’You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’ Fr Nick King says that at this point we find ourselves purring with self satisfaction, because this clearly refers to us who read the Good News from John. In the Nicene Creed we also say; “ I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ…….suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures”.
Some people say that Faith is a gift. Some have it and others, for some reason have not been given this gift. I think we need to be wary of thinking that because it can lead to elitism. I am better than , or I am specially selected or they don’t deserve this gift. Wouldn’t it be like forcing someone to love? It cannot be done. Love has to be given and received freely to be true love.Doesn’t faith have to be given and received freely in order to be true faith.?

There is an old definition of Charity that includes thinking the best of others and maybe giving the ‘benefit of the doubt’ in their favour. It has a special link with mercy and trying to be less judgemental or swift to condemn. It’s about slowing down, cooling our self-righteousness and not throwing the first stone. The Gospel for today presents us with the events surrounding the woman taken before Jesus to test him and shame her. When St Augustine of Canterbury wrote about this he made the comparison that Jesus is the perfect example of Mercy, compared to the accusers lack of compassion.These self- righteous officials are more concerned with trapping Jesus and their indignation seems contrived to make Jesus slip up so that they can charge him with some major error.Jesus responds in silence and then by writing on the ground asks them to spend a moment of self reflection. Did he write the words reported as spoken to them. “Let the sinless one among you be the first to throw a stone at her” . No one knows but it did result in the accusers performing an examination of conscience.

The ‘Prodigal Son’ in the Gospel today has been the main point of this parable for many interpretations. I would like to use the method “Just as…. So….”, to emphasise the other brother. Just as the elder brother is bitter, so are some Christians today. Sometimes our sense of injustice and bitterness can prevent us from joining the party.

What is Lent really all about? The knot of a tree gives us a clue.
Luke 13:1-9
Luke is the main Gospel writer who stands up for the lowly in society. He is delicate towards women, the poor and the outcast and has earned the title, ‘the evangelist of God’s tenderness’. He tells us how Jesus was often criticised for mixing with sinners and how he responded with phrases such as, “It is not those who are in health who are in need of the physician, it is those who are sick”. Perhaps Luke is implying that there is another group in need of help; those who are very well in the eyes of the world but are urgently in need of repentance.Is the parable of the Fig Tree a comparison of this.?

" Luke gives us a glimpse of the Risen Christ in the middle of his account of the humanity of Jesus going about his daily life on earth. Seeing the Divine in Jesus is known as ‘ Transcendence’ and Luke has a wonderful phrase “brilliant as lightening”. Seeing this is unnerving for the Apostles, particularly bringing out the sense of majesty as the light is reflected in Moses and Elijah. The last time Moses bathed in such light he was in the presence of God, and this is what Luke is implying for his readers".

There must have been a thriving fishing industry on the shores of Lake Gennesaret. The partnership of Andrew, Peter, James and John had been successful enough to buy two large fishing vessels and employ a number of men to help them. The work was hard and involved night shifts to have the catch ready for the early morning market. Fish was a staple diet and preferred fresh. With no ice or fridges the demand for new fish every day would be high. On this particular morning the fishing partners had caught nothing. I wonder how they felt? Perhaps Peter in particular was very tired and beat and afraid of what tis failure might mean. Perhaps the best thing to do was to clean up the nets and listen to the new teacher called Jesus.
Look at how the synagogue atmosphere changed.One moment they were astonished by the gracious words that came fromJesus and the next time he spoke they were enraged? The people seemed to want some kind off proof as the murmmurings began. Questions of doubt and opposition were whispered.”Isn’t this Joseph’s son?. Jesus could always read the mood of a crowd and knew he was expected to perform, “to dance” as Richard Rohr puts it. In fact he suggests opposition was forming even as Jesus was reading, “Bring good news to the destitute…oh oh where is he going with this?” Liberty to those in prison” ‘Is he against capital punishment.?
Do you recall a time when you have done this even as someone is speaking. It does happen frequently for most of us. We can have a contrary opinion ready within within seconds and are ready to defend it, particularly if we can downgrade the other with some quick judgement. Mmm she looks shifty. He has mad eyes, etc. Richard Rohr calls this dualistic thinking and we are programmed to react this way by most of what we see on TV and the Internet. It takes a real effort to stop judging and look for some 10 per cent of truth in the other’s viewpoint.
Fr Richard Rohr says that after disecting scripture texts to try and understand them more deeply, (Good News Heralds), should then put the story back together again"and use it to communicate the Word of God".
This is especially true with scripture signs like the Wedding at Cana, where we have to move away from, 'How did this happen?', towards, 'What can we discover spiritually from this episode?'
I think it is worth the effort to let some things go , we don't need to know everything. Some answers are just not available, this is the fun of mystery. Sometimes we need to "allow God to be mystery".

Bl. Solanus Casey was born Bernard Francis Casey on Nov. 25, 1870 on a farm near Oak Grove, Wisconsin along the Mississippi River. He was the sixth child in a family of ten boys and six girls born to Irish immigrant parents.
Barney invited his mother and his sister Ellen to join him in praying a novena for the nine days leading up to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. After Holy Communion on the last day, Barney distinctly heard the Blessed Mother telling him, “Go to Detroit” where the Capuchins were situated.
After his ordination, Bl. Solanus spent 20 years in New York, Harlem, and Yonkers. He was assigned to St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit where he worked for 20 years, August 1, 1924-July 23, 1945.
One of the keynotes of Bl. Solanus’ spirituality might be an Attitude of Gratitude which he called “the first sign of a thinking, rational creature.” The prayer of “Thanks be to God” poured continually from his lips. “Love for God and neighbor” is another recurring theme of his writings along with obedience, trust, humility, and patience.
It was at the monastery door, though, where Bl. Solanus became a much-loved and sought-after counselor. Eventually, visitors came and asked for Bl. Solanus. Sick people sought his blessing and remarkable cures began to take place.

London, 6 August, 1941. C. S. Lewis sits in a broadcast booth of the BBC and delivers his first radio broadcast to a nation fighting for its life. The subject: Right and Wrong, A Clue To The Meaning Of The Universe. Lewis explains the BBC broadcasts: “Ever since I became a Christian I have thought that the best, perhaps the only, service I could do for my unbelieving neighbours was to explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times.”
Lewis thought it better for his audience top focus on the natural law since he felt there was a lack in knowledge of the Bible and many didn’t believe in the assumptions the Bible made about morality. Therefore, Lewis decided he must make sure there was an understanding that right and wrong existed universally. Once this truth was established he could then deal with the issue of not living up to that standard and from where such a standard originated.
