Every Whit Way
Every Whit Way is a news podcast produced by Rowan University's newspaper The Whit. Each week news writers take a look at the news happening throughout the week, as well as focusing on certain topics that would affect both Rowan students and large swaths of people as a whole. Come join the Every Whit Way crew on Thursday or Friday, as they dive into the news in both a deep and meaningful way.
In this episode we sit down and interview the new dean of Rowan's new school of the Earth and Environment Dr. Kenneth Lacovara. We spoke to him about his accomplishments in paleontology, his Ted Talk, climate change and his plans of sustainability and climate action for the new school.
In our first show of the new season, Greg and Chad sit down with two guests to talk about journalism as a whole. In the first part of the episode, the guys talk to journalism professor and The Whit's advisor, Nicholas DiUlio. The guys talk to DiUlio about his start in journalism and what he thinks for the future of journalism. Later, The Whit's news editor, Chris Conners, joins the show as the third host discussing the world of journalism for all of us after finishing our studies here at Rowan.
In this episode, we say goodbye to Alex. The crew talks to Alex about his experience at Rowan and his future as a journalist. Later we lay out how the podcast will operate moving forward without Alex, a new beginning.
News broke on Thursday, December 5, of a Rowan student's alleged fall from the parking garage on Rowan Boulevard. The news sent shockwaves across Rowan University, in a community already reeling from three suicide deaths throughout the semester. During the week, Rowan students expressed their frustration with both the Wellness Center and the administration online; as many believed Rowan isn't doing enough in tackling the growing mental health crisis within its student body. Realizing this, the Every Whit Way crew sat down with the director of the Wellness Center, Scott Woodside, and discussed with him what the university is doing in addressing the issue of the mental health at Rowan. Later on, the guys examine the state of mental health in the country and the context surrounding the crisis itself.
In our second and final part of our climate change series, we sit down with associate professor and chair of the journalism department at Rowan University, Mark Berkey-Gerard. As one of the founders of South Jersey Climate News, Berkey-Gerard discusses the website, how it started and what climate change means for South Jersey. Later, we talk about the effects of climate change in New Jersey and what it means for the state's future with the help of our special weather guest, Peter Planamente!
Thanksgiving is this week so it's only appropriate that the Every Whit Way crew dive into the history of the holiday and its place in the American mindset. From the famous Pilgrim-Native American celebration to being the controversial catalyst of the Holiday Season, Thanksgiving is certainly a holiday that everyone pays attention to. Later, the guys discuss some of their Thanksgiving traditions, as well as some of their fondest memories surrounding the holiday.
In part one of a two-part series, the Every Whit Way crew tackles the hot button topic of Climate Change, as well as highlighting the recent protests and strikes young people around the world are holding as a result of the crisis. Later, the guys examine some of the policies governments around the are hoping to implement when addressing Climate Change and energy sustainability.
This week Chad sits down with the man behind Every Whit Way's music, Jayce Williams. A member of the band Sweet Pill, Jayce has been at the forefront of Glassboro's music scene since first attending Rowan University, and is a co-founder of the wildly successful art collective known as 4333. Later, the guys discuss what got them into music, what they're currently listening to and some of their guilty pleasures in music.
This week Alex sits down with the current Mayor of Gloucester Township, David Mayer, to discuss the state of local politics across the country. Later, the guys examine the current state of politics on a national level, as well as talk about their favorite Democratic nominee for President of the United States.
To commemorate this spooky time of year, Chad, Greg and Alex dive into some of New Jersey's haunting folklore and legends. From the Jersey Devil to Dancing Jesus, these are but some of the stories that make New Jersey uniquely weird. With one legend that will surely make your skin crawl. Later, the guys reminisce on their fondest Halloween memories, some of the traditions that came with the holiday, as well as saying their favorite horror films of all time.
This week Alex had the chance to sit down with Rowan Student Government Association President, Arielle Gedeon. Elected as the first black female student to hold the office, Alex spoke to her about the things that directly affect Rowan students and why they matter. Later, Chad, Greg and Alex discuss the legalization of marijuana in New Jersey, and what it's impact could mean for the nearly 9 million people that call the state their home.
This week we introduce ourselves and what our overall goal is for the podcast. We also discuss what our lives will be like once college ends, and if college is really worth it?
