I’ve talked about cancel culture here in the past. For those unfamiliar with the term, cancel culture refers to the practice of withdrawing support for public figures or companies after they have done something with which the general public takes issue. Not only do they boycott or “cancel” the person or entity, they weaponize shame and condemnation for the wrong thing that was done. Now, let me say, boycotting isn’t wrong, and I’m sure you have heard the phrase, you vote with your dollar. I’m not opposed to that. I practice that in my own life, and I think we all do. Everyone has somewhere they won’t shop, for whatever reason. But, cancel culture doesn’t allow for change. Cancel culture doesn’t offer redemption or second chances, and sadly, the cancel culture reflex is strong in some Christian circles.

You’ve heard about the viral hashtag, save the children, and the allegations that Wayfair was participating in human trafficking. But are those things true? What is trafficking, and how can we protect our children and community from it?
These are big questions, and I have seen a lot of misinformation and fear circulating on the topic of trafficking, specifically of children. So I reached out to Jocelyn, a local leader who’s dealing with this problem head on.
Jocelyn Hamsher and her husband founded Toward the Goal ministries, a faith-based non-profit based right here in Sugarcreek, Ohio. Toward the Goal aims to love God by loving people, walking with them toward growth, health and discovering life purpose. They do this by offering coaching, mentoring, and servant leadership training, as well as by partnering with the community to educate around the issue of human trafficking that’s occurring even right here in our community.
This conversation is important, and I want every parent, aunt, uncle, mentor, discipler, community leader to listen to it and understand what’s going on. Let’s get the conversation rolling, our communities children and teens are far too important to let our discomfort with the subject prevent us from speaking up.

The show is officially moving to a bi-weekly format. Do I love making a podcast? Yep. Love sharing it with you? You bet! But finding the space and time to record these conversations around our kids schedules, plus the time that goes into editing and research is not easy to do while working and raising a family. I love doing this, and making the show bi-weekly makes it much more sustainable for us!
Today, I’m excited to share a three way conversation with you. Friends of the show may remember Tyler from episode 2, and should certainly remember my husband Eli! Tyler has been wanting to talk about how we think about heaven and earth, so he’s back, and we spend a lot of time on that topic today!
As if that wasn’t enough, we’re also going to talk about how our relationship with God has changed after having kids. What does it mean to think about God as a father, and about how our theology impacts our parenting.
I have to admit that the last topic we explored got me a little bit fired up. I actually raised my voice a little bit, ha! While I care deeply about all the topics we explore and stories we share on this podcast, this issue of women’s roles and what the Bible says women are and aren’t allowed to do is one that I’m particularly passionate about. A friend of the show wrote into us asking us to consider, is it possible that Paul was somewhat sexist? And we really get into it.

He’s kind, thoughtful, and he’s always pushing me to learn and grow. Today, we’re sitting down and talking about embodied spirituality - what is it? Why does it matter, and what does our baby have to say about it? Well, not really, but Judith does interject into our conversation a few times. Eli and I spend our time exploring the concept of embodied spirituality. We take the time to define what that means and why we consider it so important. We talk about agreeing with Jesus vs. doing what Jesus did and ask, 'what does love do?'

I'm so excited to share this conversation with my friend Allie Mast!
But first I want to let you know this conversation may not be appropriate for all listeners. Content includes conversation about mental illness and depression, postpartum depression, self harm, and other topics of that nature. If you usually listen with your children around I’d encourage you wear earbuds for this episode.
Allie and I talk about the nature of mental illness. Is it chemical imbalances, is it spiritual attack, is it lack of faith, and so on. I don’t think there are quick fixes for anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. Treatments are as complex and variant as the patients those treatments are crafted for. I make a statement later on referring to brain chemistry imbalances - and while I do recognize that is a part of the puzzle of mental health, medicine alone cannot bring healing and health. Bessel Can Der Kolk, a world renowned expert on the way trauma effects the brain has this to say:
“The brain disease model (that is, the model which reduces mental illness to merely chemical imbalance) overlooks four fundamental truths:
Our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well being. Language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning; We have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching and We can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive.”
All of that being said, healing does not happen in a vacuum. If you’re currently experiencing mental health unwellness, consider this your invitation to bring that to the light. Healing is possible, and you are worthy of being healthy.

I’m so privileged to be able to release this special episode with my friend Inga Miller. Inga is a first generation Kenyan-American, a black woman married to a white man in Ohio’s Amish country (well known for it’s highly conservative culture) and a powerful voice within our community as she shares her experiences. I felt very strongly that Inga’s perspective on the current moment within the Black Lives Matter movement was one that was important to share. As a sister in the family of Christ, I particularly encourage my church-attending, or Christian identifying friends and family to listen to this conversation. Jocelyn came onto the podcast because we wanted to equip and empower our community to understand the real dangers around human trafficking. Over the past weeks and months we’ve seen the conversation explode, from the viral hashtag #save our children, to the accusations that wayfair, an online home decor store, was trafficking young women and children, but is that really true, or helpful? I hope that this conversation challenges the way that you think about trafficking, and helps you realize, this is an issue, right. here. On this episode, we discuss: What is Human Trafficking? Is it happening here? (Yes, the answer is yes.) What can we do about it? And pornography addiction.

I loved getting to sit down with my friend Megan from the band Wreck Like Me. We shared about her experience being the front woman in a band and how that’s different than leading worship, and we have an honest conversation about our experiences as women in the church. I’m so privileged to be able to release this special episode with my friend Inga Miller. Inga is a first generation Kenyan-American, a black woman married to a white man in Ohio’s Amish country (well known for it’s highly conservative culture) and a powerful voice within our community as she shares her experiences.
I felt very strongly that Inga’s perspective on the current moment within the Black Lives Matter movement was one that was important to share. As a sister in the family of Christ, I particularly encourage my church-attending, or Christian identifying friends and family to listen to this conversation. What Inga shares in precious, and raw, and we need to receive it as the gift that it is.

Atonement Stories Part 1 Sorry for the poor audio quality! I’m still figuring this whole thing out - it’ll sound better soon! In this episode Tyler Miller & I lay the foundation for our conversation on atonement theories. We talk about what atonement and sin are, and the language of stories versus theories.
