THANDANI NTSHUMAYELO RETIRES
Former SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates midfield workhorse Thandani
Ntshumayelo announced his retirement from football on Thursday morning.
He is only 33 years old.
The Free State-born player has been struggling to get a club after he was
released by Swallows FC last season. Ntshumayelo, who was touted to
become one of the best players in SA never fulfilled his potential and he has
had to end his career prematurely while his peers are at the peak.
His career was dealt a major blow when in 2015, he tested positive for
banned substance, cocaine.
He was slapped with a four-year ban from football by the South African
Institute for Drug Free Sport and that was the beginning of the end for the
talented player.
CELEBRATING YOUTH EXCELLENCE
There are not many young girls at 12 who can say they have beaten President
Cyril Ramaphosa at anything. But Tokollo Dlamini – a budding golf star – is
one.
During the 2019 State of the Nation proceedings in Cape Town in February,
Dlamini showed off her golf skills as she took on Ramaphosa in a
demonstration mini-game.
And even for a man who famously takes a long view of life, Ramaphosa was
no match for Dlamini’s long game … her drive went way further than his.
Linah, her mom, works as a waitress at the Kempton Park Golf Club – and
that is how Dlamini got into the sport.
Wanting a way to keep her daughter off the streets, Linah introduced the girl
to golf when she was just eight.
GRANT KEKANA FOUNDATION INITIATIVE
Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana is using his
off-season time wisely and giving back to the community with a youth charity

Kekana is set to partner with Sizwe Radebe of Impilo Foundation and former
Orlando Pirates stars Oupa Manyisa and goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo’s
foundation, to empower aspiring young athletes to engage with their
favourite local role models around Pretoria on Saturday.
Mentioning Kekana, Mhlongo and Manyisa in one sentence, one would
automatically think football, however, the 30-year-old defender said the
foundation wants to offer the youth something different by hosting a tennis
tournament.
The tournament will start off with the young participants engaging in a 5km
walk before partaking in the day’s activities.

CHAD LE CLOS BORN RACER DOCCIE
The story of champion swimmer Chad Le Clos is thus perfect for SuperSport’s
ongoing passion for storytelling, adding to a vibrant and varied documentary
content slate that goes to the heart of many of our heroes.
“Born Racer” will premiere on June 30 (SS Variety 1, 8pm).
The documentary takes viewers inside the world of elite swimming, the ups
and downs that come with it, as well as redemption. It’s about the challenges,
triumphs and extraordinary sacrifices that come with dedicating one’s self to
sport.
The big appeal of this film is its rawness. We often see Le Clos at his most
vulnerable, and he freely gives expression to his self-doubt and
disappointment. These aren’t behaviours normally on show with champion
athletes, but Le Clos, to his credit, doesn’t shy away from his failures or his
inability to cope.
Despite being able to lay claim to being the continent’s greatest swimmer of
all time, his journey hasn’t been smooth. His rivalry with the great Michael
Phelps, his famous defeat of the GOAT and his life in the fast lane are all
examined under the director’s eye.
Awande Malinga (grade 12) over the past few years has dominated her fellow competitors on the squash court, recently she bagged her eighth consecutive National Junior SA Closed Championship title.

LIV GOLF & PGA GOLF MERGER
The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and their rival Saudi-backed LIV Golf have announced
they will combine operations to create a new worldwide golf entity, marking one of
the most consequential moments in the sport’s history.
In a stunning statement that took golf by surprise on Tuesday, the US-based PGA
Tour and Europe’s DP World Tour said they would end a two-year litigation with LIV’s
Saudi backers and form “a new collectively owned, for-profit entity”.
The organisations said in a joint news release that they will work together to
allow a process for LIV Golf players to reapply for membership on the PGA
Tour and DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, following the
2023 season.
The name of the newly merged entity and the precise structure of the tours
have yet to be announced.
The rival circuit launched in 2022 and has lured a number of big-name players
from the PGA Tour, including Hall of Fame golfer Phil Mickelson, former world
number one Dustin Johnson, reigning PGA Championship winner Brooks
Koepka and Australian Cameron Smith.
Players including Tiger Woods, Hideki Matsuyama, and Rory McIlroy – who
fiercely criticised LIV – turned down eye-watering sums from LIV Golf to
remain loyal to the PGA Tour.
The rift had led to a series of lawsuits and caused acrimony between players
who turned to LIV and others. The PGA Tour suspended members who
competed in LIV tournaments without permission, while the DP World Tour
fined players.
CAPE TOWN SPURS THE RETURN
Morne Nel scored the lone goal seven minutes after Spurs were brought
down to 10-men when Ashley Cupido was shown a dubious red card by
referee Michael Mosemeng. The win solidifies Spurs' first-place position on
the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs log standings.
The Mother City outfit have now played three playoff matches, winning each
fixture with a 1-0 scoreline, putting Shaun Bartlett's side on 9 points ahead of
Maritzburg (3 points) and Casric (0 points).
The defeat for Casric ends their quest for promotion to the DStv Premiership
as they now have one fixture against Maritzburg remaining on Saturday. A
draw or loss for Maritzburg will see Spurs secure their promotion to South
Africa's top flight.
Fadlu Davids's Team of Choice will have to beat Casric to ensure their fight for
promotion can go to the final match against Spurs next Wednesday at the
Harry Gwala Stadium.
Maritzburg will have to win all their remaining matches against Casric and
Spurs to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the Premiership on goal
difference ahead of Bartlett & charges.
VOLLEYBALL SA
The South African nationally qualified volleyball coaches are being taken
through their paces at the FIVB Coaches Course, Level 1 course taking place
from 6 to 10 June 2023 at the Tempe Military Base Sports Hall in
Bloemfontein.
The 30 member participants eager to upgrade their national qualification to
the internationally accredited FIVB Coaches Course Level 1 comprised 26
from across South Africa and 4 from neighbouring Zimbabwe.
According to the VSA President the response augurs well for the provinces
and for the National Federation as only FIVB accredited coaches will be
considered for coaching positions in all the National teams.
Not even the chilly Bloemfontein weather could put a damper on the spirits
of eager participants on DAY 1 to end the 4 -day gruelling session clutching a FIVB Coaches’ certificate in their icy hands.
COMRADES MARATHON 2023
After a successful 2022 race, following two cancelled years due to the Covid-
19 pandemic, Comrades Marathon organisers have confirmed that the 2023 event will return to a more traditional June date.
Sunday, 11 June has been confirmed as the date for what will be the 96th
edition of the 89km ultra-marathon.
Despite this year’s race being a ‘down’ run finishing in Durban, the 2023 race
will follow the same route according to the race organisers.
Maiden Comrades Marathon winner Tete Dijana battled to hide his joy after
winning the 95th edition of the ultra-marathon from only his second start in
the race.
Dijana, who hails from the North-West province, crossed the finishing line in a
time of 05:30:38, just over three minutes ahead of the second-placed Edward
Mothibi, who was the defending champion.
KYALAMI GRAND PRIX
South Africa has reportedly lost its bid to host a Formula One race in the near
future, supposedly due to its political alignment with Russia.
Plans to return the Kyalami circuit to the F1 fold for the first time in 30 years
gained momentum recently after seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton said he would like to race in South Africa. Africa is the only
continent not to have a race on the F1 schedule.
It was reported late last year that the country had lost the bid to host a race
in 2023 when talks between F1 and promoter Warren Scheckter broke down
over financial details. The focus shifted to staging a South African Grand Prix
in 2024 with 777, a sports investment company based in Miami, taking over
promotion of the event.
PSL PLAYERS MOVEMENT
SABC Sport reports that midfielder Surprise Ralani is set to leave champions
Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the month.
The veteran playmaker was a surprise signing in January 2022, but was used
effectively by the Downs technical team in helping them win the league.
But after 18 months his contract is up and sources have informed the public
broadcaster, the club will not trigger the option on the initial agreement,
meaning he will become a free agent on 30 June.
FRENCH OPEN
Ukraine's Elina Svitolina accused Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka of encouraging
French Open fans to boo her by waiting at the net for a handshake following
their tense quarter-final. Svitolina has not shaken hands with Russian
opponents since Ukraine was invaded with support from Belarus. Before her
loss to Sabalenka, Svitolina made clear she would again avoid it.
On the first day at Roland Garros, Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk was booed for
refusing to shake hands with Belarusian opponent Aryna Sabalenka in protest
over the ongoing war in her country.

caretaker coach, has also decided to leave despite president Sandile Zungu
having indicated he might have another role at the club.
Usuthu had an underwhelming campaign, finishing in 12th place in the
Premiership, four points above the automatic relegation spot, though they
did reach the MTN8 final where they lost to Orlando Pirates.
Dlamini took over as caretaker coach, but won one game in Usuthu’s last six.
Since Zungu took ownership of the club from Patrick Sokhela in 2020, there
have been four coaching changes, including Benni McCarthy, Brandon Truter,
Romain Folz and Ayanda Dlamini.
PITSO MOSIMANE, AMAKHOSI SAVIOUR?
Mosimane’s international success saw him coach the biggest club in Africa,
Cairo’s Al Ahly, to five trophies including back-to-back Caf Champions League
and Caf Super Cup titles. In his first foray outside Africa, he has ensured Al-
Ahli Saudi's promotion from the Yelo League back to the Saudi Pro League
(SPL).
Chiefs have gone eight years without a trophy. Making such a pairing seem
more unlikely is Amakhosi have increasingly skimped on spending — on the cost of coaches appointed and the squads they’ve given to the men in charge.
THE HEALTH CORNER
What should players do off season to ensure optimal health and fitness?
SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Red Bull's Max Verstappen cruised to a third consecutive victory, his fifth in
seven races, to win the Spanish Grand Prix and take control of the season.
The Dutchman's 40th career victory extended his championship lead over
team-mate Sergio Perez to 53 points.
Verstappen was followed home by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on an
encouraging day for Mercedes.
Carlos Sainz slipped from second on the grid to fifth at the finish in the
upgraded Ferrari, losing fourth to Perez in the closing stages.
Red Bull chose the medium tyre for both cars for the start unlike the soft on
most of the other cars. That gave them the option of either a one-stop or a
two-stop strategy.
They fitted the hard at his first stop and Verstappen could have gone to the
end on that, but he decided he did not like it and swapped to the soft for a
short final stint.

Pochettino as their new manager. The Argentine, 51, begins his new role on 1 July
2023 on a two-year contract, with an option of a further year.
Pochettino is Chelsea's sixth permanent manager in five years following the
sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter earlier this season, which led to
Lampard taking charge on a temporary basis.
He is also the fourth boss of new owner Todd Boehly's reign after the
American took over at Stamford Bridge last July.
Since Boehly took over, Chelsea have spent more than £550m on players with
their Premier League record of £288m in January totalling more than all the
clubs in the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 combined.
NEDBANK CUP WRAP
Orlando Pirates beat Sekhukhune United 2-1 and lifted the Nedbank Cup thus
bringing the business end of the 16th edition of the Nedbank Cup.
The Nedbank Cup campaign is built on the sentiment that the small, everyday
choices can have the biggest impact on our lives.
This season, Nedbank partnered with renowned coach and football legend
Pitso Mosimane and former players Stanton Fredericks, Teko Modise and
Daine Klate as well as footballer Siphiwe Tshabalala to share their stories to
inspire South Africans to make decisions that will benefit their futures.
Nedbank first took sponsorship of the Nedbank Cup in 2008 at a value of
R400 million over five years. The bank renewed its sponsorship in 2013.
2018 marked a new chapter for Nedbank and the Premier Soccer League after
the two parties extended their partnership for another five years.
AFRICAN ARTISTIC GYMNASTIC CHAMPS
The 17th African Artistic Gymnastics Championships has wrapped up at
Heartfelt Arena in Tshwane and continental powerhouses Egypt, who
annexed 23 of the 28 gold medals on offer at last year’s championships in
their home country, came to compete.
Caitlin Rooskrantz, South Africa’s main medal hope and defending champion
from Egypt last year, had an excellent clean competition, ending second
overall, but the star of the evening was Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour, who trains in
France and was not available to compete last year in Egypt.
But it was team South Africa who were the big winners on the evening,
maintaining their early lead throughout a virtually faultless competition to
take the team gold.
It was a historic night for South African gymnastics, the first team victory in

MENTAL HEALTH IN SPORT
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has apologised for suggesting Vinicius Junior was being
"manipulated" when the Real Madrid winger called out racism he has suffered in
Spain. The Brazil international took to social media to speak out after being abused in
Sunday's game at Valencia, saying it was a problem he had endured throughout the
league.
Real Madrid players stepped out at the Bernabeu in No. 20 shirts ahead of
their La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano on Thursday - the same squad
number worn by forward Vinicius Junior who was racially abused in a match
against Valencia at the weekend. The players donned the shirt to show their
support to the Brazilian, who was sent off for reacting to the abuse.
Vinicius was present in the stands at the Bernabeu and received a standing
ovation in the 20th minute of the game against Vallecano, which he gratefully
welcomed with a wave of thanks.
Spain’s football federation has ordered a five-game partial stadium ban at
Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium following racist abuse suffered by Real Madrid
star Vinícius Jr. during the teams’ La Liga match there on Sunday.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also announced a fine of
€45,000 (around $48,489) for the incident and rescinded the red card shown
to Vinícius Jr. on the basis that the referee and video assistant officials did not
take into account the actions of two Valencia players, Hugo Duro and Giorgi
Mamardashvili.
Banyana Banyana international Noko Matlou has received a boost, as she is
now part of the PUMA family.
Matlou joins fellow national team players, Andile Dlamini, Bambanani Mbane,
Rhoda Mulaudzi and Thalea Smidt who were recently recruited by the brand.
Matlou has returned to the starting lineup for SD Eibar in the Spanish second
division after recovering from injury.
The 37-year-old missed her club’s three matches and also withdrew from the
Banyana Banyana squad that played against Serbia earlier this month due to a
muscle injury.
Matlou will be hoping to secure a spot in Desiree Ellis’ final squad of 23

Coast already, with Morocco winning their two opening games vs Liberia and

early next month when Broos announces his final list.

the Telkom Netball League. They will meet again in July for the final stretch of
the World Cup preparations.

Phumza Maweni who might be playing in their last World Cup tournaments
‘The biggest robbery’: Lomachenko vs Haney
Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney retained his titles Saturday
night at the MGM Grand Garden, but not without a controversial decision
that former three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko’s camp plans on
appealing.
Lomachenko dominated the latter rounds and outpunched Haney, 124-110.
But much to the dismay of the 14,436 fans in attendance, all three judges had
Haney winning. Tim Cheatham and David Sutherland scored the fight 115-
113, while Dave Moretti had it 116-112.
Manchester City celebrated their third consecutive Premier League title on
Sunday as a much-changed side was still good enough to beat Chelsea 1-0 at
the Etihad.
The strength of City's squad was exemplified by Julian Alvarez, who has spent
most of the season as Erling Haaland's understudy, scoring his 17th goal of
the campaign to extend the English champions' unbeaten run in all
competitions to 24 games.
Guardiola's treble chasers face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at
Wembley on June 3, then take on Inter Milan in Istanbul seven days later as
they look to win the Champions League for the first time.
Arsenal led the table for large swathes of the season as a first title since 2004
looked possible, but ultimately buckled under the pressure of a relentless
City.
At the other end of the table, struggling Leeds lost 3-1 at West Ham as
Rodrigo's opener was erased by goals from Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and
Manuel Lanzini.
Sam Allardyce's side remain third bottom and are two points adrift of fourth
bottom Everton, with both teams having just one game left.
Even if Leeds beat Tottenham at home on the final day of the season, the
Yorkshire club would still be relegated if Everton win their last game against
Bournemouth at Goodison Park.
Faf du Plessis's excellent form in this year's Indian Premier League for Royal

this year's cricket World Cup in India.

since 2019, is the leading run-scorer in the IPL with 702 runs at a strike rate

DSTV PREM RELEGATION BATTLE
Maritzburg United chairperson Farouk Kadodia is fearful of sinister forces in
the final matches of the DStv Premiership especially in the relegation fight
when Chippa United host Golden Arrows at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on
Saturday.
The Team of Choice concluded their season on Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld,
Pretoria, with a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns. The result saw them
move from the bottom to 14th on the log table with 30 points, one better
than Chippa and Marumo Gallants, who will play their last matches on
Saturday.
After bombing out of the Confed Cup, Marumo will not shift their focus to the
Premier Soccer League where they have all to fight for as far as the top-flight
status is concerned. Gallants are currently in the playoff spot (15th) and they
take on top-eight hopefuls Swallows FC on the final day of the season.
To avoid any complicated permutations, Gallants will need to win against the
Dube Birds, leaving Maritzburg United and Chippa United in the red zone as
one of these three teams must be relegated, and another must go to the
playoffs. Teams from the National First Division who are waiting with bated
breath are Casric Stars and Cape Town Spurs.

HOLLYWOOD BETS SUPER LEAGUE
Former Wits University FC coach, Nthabeleng Modiko, last year joined
Hollywoodbets Super League side team UJ Ladies, where she reveals she
wants to be able to help the team improve and meet this year’s season
targets.
Formerly coach of the Wits University FC team, Nthabeleng Modiko, is from Maokeng in Kroonstad, Free State, and is currently based in Johannesburg.
Modiko made her coaching debut with Wits in the 2019 Sasol League season,
going on to guide her team to a top-five finish, and ended her most recent
season earning a top three place with Wits to finish the year.
The coach id styled in honour of the Brazilian midfielder ‘Dunga’.
Kaizer Chiefs communications manager Vina Maphosa has responded to
rumours that the club could look to sack head coach Arthur Zwane, insisting
the Amakhosi leadership are “not even contemplating” a change of coaches.
Zwane is experiencing a bumpy debut season as head coach of the club, with
results turning sour of late after the club lost four out of their last five games.
As a consequence, last hopes of silverware were dashed, meaning the club’s
trophy drought will continue to over eight years.
Chiefs fans around SA are sick to their teeth due to another rank-poor season
which, after 11 league defeats, ranks as the club's worst campaign in the PSL
era.
With Khanyisa Mayo having joined Peter Shalulile on the top of the goal-
scoring charts, Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has said his striker has an
opportunity to go and win the golden boot when City take on Kaizer Chiefs in
their final DStv Premiership fixture this weekend.
Mayo scored a brace in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Richards Bay to join
Shalulile on 12 goals.
SPRINGBOKS WORLD CUP DEFENSE CRISIS
Siya Kolisi damaged his cruciate ligament and is in a race against time to be fit
in time for the RWC in France.
Francois Steyn and Duane Vermeulen are well past their prime with both at
36 years old. Both have lost pace and the Boks now have stronger players
available.
Elton Jantjies was dropped due to the drama surrounding his rumoured affair
with Bok dietician Zeenat Simjee but now Manie Libbok is likely to keep him
out of the Bok squad.
Jaden Hendrikse and Cobus Reinach’s spots are in jeopardy due to one man –
Grant Williams (named in the URC Team of the Season dangerous on attack
with every pacey snipe).
The return of RG Snyman could spell trouble for Marvin Orie.
Marcel Coetzee is likely to miss out if Kolisi is fit with Kwagga Smith and Deon
Fourie both in top form.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that in its
audited financial report for 2022 it has incurred a loss of R2.2 million.
The loss was confirmed by then SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe after the
Ordinary Congress.
The congress did not take place in 2022 and so the books of SAFA were not
declared in public, according to Motlanthe.
With Castle having cut ties with the association after two decades, a deal that
brought in a reported R10-million in their 2022 financial report.
SAFA was paid R25m a year in its four-year broadcast deal for national teams
and junior competitions with the SABC from October 2019. The deal ends in
September. The association is unhappy that, under pressure to ensure free-to-air coverage, Safa accepted that the cash-strapped public broadcaster
negotiated down from the R110m a year in its previous deal.
THE HEALTH CORNER
Muscle strength and muscle mass tend to weaken over time due to loss in our
muscle fibers. Visits to the hip or knee doctor are common as areas of our
body that experience constant use can wear out. Exercise and weight lifting
can help slow down this process of aging.
In addition to loss of muscle strength and mass, older athletes can also lose
their flexibility over time. This makes them more susceptible to injury than
younger athletes who are doing the exact same activities. No matter what
age you are, stretching and warming up before an exercise is key to
preventing injury, especially as you age.
Most running related injuries have one thing in common — too much
running. Over-exercise becomes even more dangerous as we age. Common
symptoms include back pain, bursitis, stress fracture, hamstring injury,
kneecap pain, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, heel pain, Morton’s Neuroma
and more.
Polokwane City have been promoted to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after
a thumping 4-0 win over Pretoria Callies in Limpopo during a dramatic final
day of the Motsepe Foundation League on Sunday.
City won the Motsepe Foundation Championship to clinch automatic
promotion by the narrowest of margins in goal difference as they ended
equal on 57 points with Cape Town Spurs, who played a 1-1 draw with
University of Pretoria (Tuks).
City make a return to the big time after they were relegated on the last day of
the 2019-20 season
For their championship efforts, City will walk away with R5m that will possibly
go towards helping them prepare for the PSL, where they will be trying to wrestle the title from a dominant Mamelodi Sundowns..
CARVO CARDO perceives himself as an artistic person because of his love for anything
that takes up the form of art; be it a painting, poetry, music or acting. When asked
why be a rapper? He simply replied, “People have admired poets for centuries and
glorified musicians for even longer.
Rap is a fusion of both, so why not choose rap?” These are the two passions that stole
his heart and brought him to the City of Dreams.
After years of development and dedication in the studio tirelessly working to perfect
his art, CARVO CARDO released a track called “Up in this ft Jimmy Jagga" as a way to
get a feel of the then current hip hop scene in 2014. The reception was positive.
Having identified his lane in the industry he then proceeded to release a number of
singles in 2015, notably “Excuse U ft Dizzmental” and following the success of “Excuse
U”, he subsequently dropped the overwhelming fan favourite “Squad”, where the
lyricist revels upon the experiences of rolling with his... well...
“Squad”; complimented by a knocker of a trap-like beat that has proven to keep ears
and mouths ringing long after the curtain closes. As a result of the humbling success
seen by CARDO, he has secured a public stamp of approval from the likes of Sizwe
Dhlomo, DJ Milkshake, YFM’s DJ Speedsta and Ricky Rick amongst many other
industry stakeholders.
CARVO CARDO released his debut E.P entitled THE FOREVER COMBO on the 6th of
October 2016 which reached 20 000 streams on Spotify.
A year later, CARVO CARDO released NATURES SAUCE. A mixtape that has been rated
one of the best independent compositions in SA Hip Hop. With features from MARAZA, JAY CLAUDE and TSHEGO. In 2017, CARVO CARDO released a monstrous
single titled Orange, which features MARAZA.
The Limpopo outfit are engaged in differing domestic and continental battles,
which will require them to be strong mentally if they are to succeed.
Defeated 2-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match Saturday, Marumo
Gallants are still stuck in the throes of relegation – positioned 14th with 29
points and one match to go.
That is just three points more than bottom dwellers Maritzburg United and
the same as 15th-placed Chippa United, who both still have two matches to
play.
They have to beat Swallows FC in their final match if they are to survive
Coach Raymond Mdaka's immediate concern is to ensure that his players are
not weighed down by the threat of relegation as they prepare to take on
Tanzania's Young Africans in their own backyard for the first leg semi-final of
the Confederation Cup.
Marumo technical advisor Dylan Kerr slammed the naivety of his team after a
2-0 loss to Young Africans match watched by a 40 000-plus crowd at the
Benjamin Mpaka Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
PROTEAS “JUST” MAKE WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION
South Africa have sealed the final automatic qualification spot for the World Cup
after Ireland's hopes of pipping them were dashed on Tuesday when their first one-
day international against Bangladesh was washed out.
South Africa played their last ODI series in the qualification period that ends this
week against the Netherlands and had beaten them 2-0 to move up to eighth in the
World Cup Super League.
Their hopes of playing in the tournament in India this year hinged on Ireland not
beating Bangladesh 3-0 in the ODI series in Chelmsford, with net run rate also coming
into play.
Had the Proteas fallen below Ireland in the standings, they would have faced a 10-
team World Cup Qualifier series – including the West Indies and Sri Lanka – in
Zimbabwe in June and July.
The biggest positive of qualifying directly for the World Cup is that Proteas players
not involved in The Hundred in England or Major League Cricket in the US will be able
to take a proper break before Australia’s white-ball tour of South Africa in late
August and September.
The SASKO Siyasizana community initiative has launched the ‘Play Better’ campaign
which aims to build, restore and upgrade 1000 playgrounds throughout Mzansi in
2023.
Through the power of positive play, the campaign is targeting early childhood
development (ECD) and foundation phase age group children with a strong anti-
bullying message by promoting active and positive play.
SASKO has been at the centre of communities since 1930, and the SASKO Siyasizana
initiative has always focused on building a solid foundation for our nation’s children.
Siyasizana, which means ‘we are helping each other’ previously provided pre-primary
and primary school children with reading books and educational material. This latest
project aims to build on this legacy by promoting social skills development.
The Play Better campaign forms part of SASKO’s “people who care make things
better” brand repositioning which launched last year. The initiative is on a mission to
rollout 100 playgrounds in phase 1 through a consumer call to action of nominating a
school of their choice that they believe deserves a playground upgrade.
The winning schools will be provided playground upgrades to the value of R10 000

about a positive aura around the province as the increase of clubs hailing from KZN

joint most teams in the league, tied with Gauteng with five.
The beginning of the season saw Richards Bay surging toward the top of the league
standings alongside AmaZulu.
With two games of the season remaining, Arrows, AmaZulu, Richards Bay and
Maritzburg are in the bottom eight.

MEASUREMENT MONTH
The one month in the year where South Africans can get a FREE blood pressure check
at participating pharmacies nationwide. And it’s the month that marks World
Hypertension Day on 17.05.
These are the facts and why this campaign is so important – especially in South
Africa:
Worldwide, more than 11-million people die from this chronic illness every
year
Worldwide 28 000 people die every day from the consequences of
hypertension - that’s the equivalent of 70 jumbo jets crashing and killing
everyone on board
In South Africa the picture is equally concerning: an estimated 53 men and 78
women over 30 die from the impact of hypertension every day
Hypertension is known as a ‘silent killer’ because it’s just that. There are no
symptoms and you don’t feel ill until you have a cardiac event like a heart
attack
BOXING AWARDS
The annual Boxing SA awards to be held at the Durban International Convention
Centre on June 30 should be welcomed by the fighting fraternity and stakeholders as
therapy to numb the pain of the families who lost their loved ones through Covid-19.
The last ceremony took place at Sandton Convention Centre in 2019 and the
country went on hard lockdown in March 2020.
Prior to those awards, the fight fraternity had gathered in Gqeberha, Eastern
Cape.

immediate effect, the South African Football Association moved with great haste and
appointed Lydia Monyepao to fill the vacancy. Monyepao is well-known in national
football circles after her appointment in 2021 as SAFA's Chief Operations Officer.

In view of this appointment, Monyepao will be handily placed to spearhead South
Africa's attempt to win the bid to host the 2027 Fifa Women's World Cup.
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez beat Britain's John Ryder in front of 50,000 raucous Mexican
fans on a historic night in Guadalajara. The Mexican champion defended his
undisputed super-middleweight crown on points despite a spirited display by Ryder
at Estadio Akron. Alvarez, 32, dominated the fight and dropped Ryder in round five,
but the Londoner fought back well.
Two judges scored the bout 118-109 and the other 120-107 to Alvarez.
The four-weight world champion won his 59th fight since turning professional, with
two losses and two draws. The fight was Ryder's sixth loss in 38 bouts and he has
now twice failed at world title level, after being defeated by Briton Callum Smith for
the WBA 'Super' title in 2019.
Boxing fans are calling for a mouth-watering clash against former world champion
David Benavidez. The undefeated American has 23 knockout wins in 27 fights.

Rovers while TTM lost 2-1 to Hungry Lions.
The two sides will now play amateur football in the ABC Motsepe League.

Canada forward Janine Beckie has joined the growing chorus calling for better research into the prevalence of injuries in women's soccer, saying that alarm bells would ring if their male counterparts were suffering the same fate. The 28-year-old, who helped Canada capture gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is among a group of players who will miss the Women's World Cup that kicks off on July 20 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. This is apparently the same injury that could keep Springbok captain Siya Kolisi out of the World Cup later this year.
The Springbok Women's Sevens team were crowned champions of the first world rugby sevens challenger series tournament in a cold and wet Stellenbosch on saturday when they beat Belgium by 17-10 in a pulsating Final.

The balance of risk and reward often keeps young, undefeated and extremely

Fat Cats Cricket club has been in existence from about 2007. Around that time we
enlisted in the Last Man Standing (LMS) league, but we didn’t even complete the
season due to a myriad of problems including finance and player availability.
It was not until 2018 when it was formalised and accepted by the BOG. That year an
interim structure was put in place and by January 2019, the club had a first executive
structure, which has been in charge since.
Fat Cats cricket was brought about mainly by people with keen interest in the club. In
2007 when we started, we used to play two games per year, mainly in
November/December.
These were termed Blacks v Whites, given that our members were playing against the
school mates who happened to be white, from the same schools they attended.
We then decided to get more serious and arranged more fixtures in a year. These
took place on public holidays. March 21, April 27, May 2 and September 24 gave us
an opportunity to confirm fixtures.
We used to play against each other (split the team into two, and have fun). Famously,
the September 24 date became known as Fat Cats cricket day and everyone was
welcome, even those who had never held a cricket bat before. They first played
cricket on this occasion.

GTH (Global Team Horse Racing) is the re-imagined format of traditional horse
racing; It’s fast-paced, team-based, easy to understand and fun. This isn’t your
normal day at the races and it’s taken South Africa by storm.
Angus Campbell, marketing director of GTH, explains: “While there are still successful
international signature horse racing events like the Melbourne Cup, The Kentucky
Derby, The Dubai World Cup, and the Durban July, the truth is that horse racing, like
all sporting entertainment businesses, needs rejuvenation to appeal to modern
audiences. GTH is a racing revolution, it’s a new and improved product changing the
perception of what a day at the races is. We offer a faster, easier to understand and
entertaining version of traditional racing.”
This new approach is certainly appealing to a local market with GTH winning the
prestigious Event of the Year award last year at the Hollard Sports Industry awards
ceremony, beating events like the Rugby World Cup Sevens final.

Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the 2022-23 DStv Premiership title without even
kicking a ball after SuperSport United dropped points.
SuperSport drew 1-1 with Chippa United in Gqeberha on Saturday and as a result,
Sundowns clinched a record-extending sixth successive league championship.
Furthermore, SuperSport slipped down to the third spot on the league standings with Orlando Pirates leapfrogging the Tshwane giants.
Pirates' Soweto rivals, Kaizer Chiefs boosted their ambitions of finishing second and
qualifying for the CAF Champions League by defeating Stellenbosch FC 2-1 in
Johannesburg.
Along with the 2020 Tuscan and 2021 Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, we can now add
Australia 2023 to the list of Formula 1 races with three standing starts. As a relatively
straightforward win for Max Verstappen drew ever closer, the race exploded into life
with four laps of the 58 to run when Kevin Magnussen tagged the Turn 2 wall, ripping
the right rear Pirelli tyre straight off the hub. Owing to tyre and wheel debris, such as
metal fragments, the race was red-flagged for a second time following Alexander
Albon's early shunt.
The two-lap shootout proved costly for Alpine with both cars wrecked, and then
there was subsequent confusion about what the order would be behind Verstappen
and Lewis Hamilton. Eventually, the order was taken as it was under the Magnussen
red flag, as this was the last time the FIA could categorically create a running order -
akin to Great Britain 2022 and the first lap pile-up there.
