Celebrating Black Joy: A Vibrant Tapestry of Arts, Culture, and Community at BOPSers’ 19th Annual Black History Month EventOn February 29th, it was the Black OPSers’ Network’s (BOPSers’) 19th annual Black History Month Event, this year with the theme Black Joy: A Celebration of the Arts & Cultures of Africa and the Diaspora. Held at the Ontario Government’s 315 Front Street West building in Toronto, Ontario, it’s BOPSers’ last big event of the government fiscal year before we start the process again on April 1st.
Unlike BOPSers’ other two major events—the Anti-Black Racism discussion in the summer and the Annual Town Hall in the fall, where we discuss so many of the experiences and issues that’ve negatively shaped our experiences both personally and professionally, this event was an observance full of movement, storytelling and spirit, bringing hundreds of public servants together and more than a thousand more online to spend 2½ hours enjoying everything the program had to offer!
Co-hosted by Patricia Wilson and me—the co-chairs of BOPSers’ Black Managers’ and Team Leads’ group (BBMTL)—and Melanie Kisirye and Garth Edwards, who lead BOPSers’ Outreach Committee, the event offered numerous expressions of Black joy that asked everybody to get involved:
The Mosaic of Performances Celebrating Black Excellence and Cultural Unity A rousing land acknowledgement by BOPSers member Marleine Toussaint, who used the French language and a passionate soul to get the audience ready for what was to come, * A talk by 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women 2024 Honouree Assistant Deputy Minister Cordelia Clarke Julien, who encouraged us to get up out of our seats, be Black and be proud, and recognise the importance we hold in the world around us, * Performances by vocalist Faith Amour, who did a wonderful rendition of the Black National Anthem and several pieces with her band, * Messages from BOPSers’ Interim Chair, Sarah Alcindor, and Co-Chair, Arlene Doyle, including an international roll call for representation (that conveniently didn’t call Jamaica out by name, though we were all on the edge of our seats, ready to represent!), and one from Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont by video, wishing us well as we all joined in revelry, * Drumming from African Drums & Art Crafts, getting everyone on their feet, eventually bringing dozens of us together to move with the rhythms in the centre of the room, * Dancing from Dance Caribe Performing Company, who did two elaborate dances (in two elaborate outfits*), inspiring everyone to clap along for encouragement, * Poetry from Nadine Williams, who shared perspectives from her Jamaican upbringing and how they shaped the woman she is today, * And closing songs from Trey Dehaney, worship leader and gospel artist, who closed the event off with a couple of songs!
The BOPSers 19th Annual Black History Month Event: We Celebrated Black History with Unity, Music, and Dance! This is what happens when people start to feel the rhythm in their souls…What made the event so special is that while we do a lot to celebrate Black culture through February with all sorts of talks, events and presentations, we rarely get to do it in person, much less while putting our whole selves into it through music and dance! For some, it helped release some weight from a long winter month filled with dreary skies, heavy workloads and cold. For others, it was a glimpse into us at our freest, showing what it looks like when joy’s running through our souls. But for me, it was amazing to just be with my people, feeling so many of my feelings while at work.
So, while my February was intense as I juggled leading my branch of more than 400 people with all the things I needed to do for Black History Month (emceeing two events, facilitating a talk, being a panellist and organizing a whole church service), this was the perfect way to end it. There are a lot of people across BOPSers to thank for coming together to even make this happen, but ultimately, just like the Mr. Vegas song, I know I am blessed to have the opportunity to help bring something like this to fruition!
I hope you all had an excellent Black History Month, and until the next, I remain,

I stepped away from creating content for a while, feeling like I didn’t have the time to be creative and express what was on my mind with everything happening in every other part of my life.
A sudden influx of Treasury Board submissions without the right amount of staff to support them. Growing kids who needed us to help them with the struggles going on in their lives. No matter how I looked, it felt like something was fighting for my attention, and I had no idea how I would get out from under it all.
But after coming into 2023, determined to learn from what made my 2022 so difficult, I started seeing things changing for the better. My new work attitude helped me get things done, trusting my staff to handle their portfolios instead of getting involved in every little decision. And it didn’t hurt that I finally started using OneNote to keep everything organised, using the sections for each portfolio to track updates on the work and request more info from the leads whenever I needed it. Taming my full-time job played a significant role in dealing with part of my 2022 that I hadn’t beaten yet—the problems with my health.
Table of contents* Who Knew How Much of a Difference Water Could Make??? + The human body is 60% water. Maybe you should keep that water fresh! * But Sometimes You’ve Gotta Go Low to Go High. * Change Before You Have To. + What gets measured gets FIXED. * A New Me for 2023! + 1) I’m starting to find more time to work out. + 2) I prioritize getting outside and getting FIT. + 3) I’ll find ways to enjoy the foods I like without endangering myself. * The First Step of a Long Fitness Journey!
Who Knew How Much of a Difference Water Could Make???I got the news a couple of days before Christmas—that with a blood pressure of 136/89, I was getting dangerously close to hypertension and needed to start watching how much sodium I was taking in with my diet. And with my blood glucose starting to veer into the pre-diabetes range, I needed to watch what sugar I was taking in, too.
Funny enough, I’d already been making some strides by this point—in November, I’d switched to drinking water from the soft drinks and beer I’d frequently consumed before, trying to hit three litres a day to build healthier habits into my life.
The human body is 60% water. Maybe you should keep that water fresh! As of November 2022, I started drinking three litres of water a day, pretty much every day, and putting most other liquids behind me. And then in December, when I cut most refined sugar and salty foods out of my diet as well, it’s been taking me down an entirely new path in my life 😊And some of the effects were pretty immediate! I shaved twelve pounds off my peak pandemic weight, and some of my older clothes were starting to fit again. I wouldn’t cramp up after vigorous physical activity, which I’d been attributing to age instead of hydration. Grogginess seemed to be a thing of the past when I woke up and didn’t miss my other drinks after a while. In fact, I tried having a beer the other day in a moment of frustration, and despite it being on the lighter side at 4.8% alcohol, my head started feeling a little light after only a few sips, so it didn’t quite feel like it’s currently the thing for me.
But despite those efforts, that doctor’s visit showed that hydration was just the start of my journey. There was much more I still needed to do!
But Sometimes You’ve Gotta Go Low to Go High.Buying 1000 Chupa Chups in the throes of the COVID-19 lockdowns may not have been my brightest moment, but they brought us some joy for a while!Like many of us, I spent a good chunk of the pandemic being the worst to my body, doing whatever I needed to survive.
I’d have a beer or two a night after long days of trapping ourselves inside with our kids, getting more jaded at the situation after those first three weeks passed further and further behind us. I’d order little snacks and treats to keep my spirits up—you may remember when I ordered a thousand Chupa Chups lollipops and spent the next 18 months trying to find good ways to get rid of them.
Soon enough, only a fraction of my wardrobe fit anymore—I was so dejected by everything that I didn’t care about what I did to myself. And that’s why, while I was surprised when I got this news about my health, I wasn’t in disbelief. We so often spend our first decades convinced that we’re invincible, but this was a good wake-up call to remind me of that. I’d soon be entering my mid-life years, and if I wanted to age gracefully instead of painfully, it was high past time that I started making better changes for myself.
Change Before You Have To.One of the big changes I’ve made in 2023 is how much more I’ve been eating at home instead of grabbing a quick lunch from some of my favourite fast food joints. It takes a little more intentionality to see what we have and taking time to put it together, but with all the water I’ve been drinking, I find the cravings have gone down thanks to a fuller stomach.
“It’s time for us as a people to start makin’ some changes”
— 2Pac, “Changes”, Greatest Hits (1998)
I wasn’t messing around—I finished my last box of Oatmeal Crisp and switched to Corn Flakes since its sugar content was so much less. (But then I discovered that Corn Flakes actually aren’t good for diabetics, and I’ll now soon finish them off so I can move over to Cheerios.) And as much as I love soft drinks, many of them have been sitting in my basement fridge since Christmastime, opening them only on special occasions or when we have other kids over for meals. I’ve been living a life of fruits, vegetables and water crackers between meals (I know, I know—carbs), not sure what I can eat and what I need to avoid because it’s all so new to me, and I need to find the help to figure out what the right path looks like for me.
But after talking to several people, I’ve started taking better steps forward with a bit of a plan.
What gets measured gets FIXED.There are several figures that I should know at a glance to understand how healthy I am. Numbers like my:
When I bought these Adidas track pants a year ago on sale, they didn’t fit. I’d been beating my body up for so long through the lockdown life that very few of my clothes fit like they used to. But with these positive changes in my life, I found they suddenly suited me!And while I can put a couple of fingers on my neck and check my pulse to know what the last one is (but let’s not kid ourselves—with my love for data, I’m getting myself a proper fitness tracker to track this as soon as possible), the other two need more specific devices, with blood glucose and blood pressure monitors for the job.
But where to get them?
My mother recently pointed out that you can get blood pressure monitors at Costco, but the blood glucose monitor’s covered under my work’s insurance plan! More than that, we have an employee assistance program that can connect us to health professionals like dietitians.
Essentially, I’ve spent almost sixteen years as a public servant, but I’m finally learning how to take advantage of every tool that’s at my disposal to get the things I need to lead the best life possible—and after what’s been entirely too long a time, that finally includes my health.
A New Me for 2023!So, what does the future have in store?
1) I’m starting to find more time to work out.Part of using OneNote to get organised has seen more room in my basement office to do things other than sit amidst my wayward piles of paper, and I can squeeze in just enough time in the day to get some thirty-minute sessions in for high-intensity interval training in with the weights that neighbours, family and friends were kind enough to send me.
2) I prioritize getting outside and getting FIT.My mom’s tip was to fit in a vigorous ten-minute walk (at least) right after dinner to help bring my afflictions down, as it would help with digestion and not leave too many unnecessary elements just floating around in my bloodstream.
But more than that, my Facebook post seeking help from friends found me a whole bunch of people willing to take power walks with me, and I also discovered that we get a pretty decent discount on a Goodlife gym membership, so I’ll be heading in on Friday for a personal training consultation to a location that’s a fifteen-minute walk from me, mostly downhill. (Getting home won’t be so fun!)
3) I’ll find ways to enjoy the foods I like without endangering myself.I’m not so naïve to think that I can return to my old ways of overconsumption, but I need a better understanding of what different foods do to me so I know what I can put on my plate in moderation. Doing this right is something I’m not about to give up on, especially when I’ve already started seeing some initial success. They might not be the most exciting choices I’ve made, but they’re some of the most necessary—hopefully, I’ll have some good progress to share as I continue this fitness journey!
The First Step of a Long Fitness Journey! To those who’ve made it this far, thanks for reading my story—it’s been one of the biggest changes I’ve had to make to my life to date, but I’m quickly finding my rhythm with it all.
If you’re out there at the beginning steps of a fitness journey, too, and need someone to chat with, let me know. Everyone’s been encouraging, and I hope to pay the positivity forward! But with that said, this is but the first chapter in a very long story.
I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know a little more about what’s going on with me, and that I can come back to you soon with an update!
Thanks as always for reading, and until the next post, I remain,

In the second part of my interview with Drekken Pownz, we look at why there may be more gay people than the stats say, what it’s like living life having to hide who you are, and why X-Men is the perfect analogy for society’s view on homosexuality. Check it out!
“Be kind to yourself,
Be true to yourself,
And always move forward.”— Drekken Pownz, Chatting with Casey, Episode Seven: “SEE Each Other.”
When my friend Marie Nicola heard I was doing my podcast, she congratulated me on putting something together with such high production value but thought me nuts to do it without the help of a producer.
And she was right. She’d know—having run The Nat & Marie Show with Nat Atubanos for years—that podcasting’s quite the fickle friend.
You need to be in the groove—people can spot uninspired drivel a mile away, and if your heart’s not in it, it’s probably not worth posting. You need the time and space to record because no one wants to listen to a podcast with an unnecessary background soundtrack. The mechanics of podcasting aren’t hard in themselves—anyone can hit record on a mic and post the audio online—but to make a podcast worth listening to is another matter entirely.
So—a little older and wiser than any time I’ve tried this before—I’m creating to give myself the space to grow a team. No one can do everything on their own, and as much as I logically know that, it’s time my actions start showing that too. It’s a massive work in progress, but keep your eyes and ears open for more details as I figure it out!
Chatting with Casey Episode Seven—The Story Gets Better.

As for today’s podcast, he’s back! After we left his story on a cliffhanger in episode six, Drekken Pownz still had plenty to share about his past and where he’d like to end up in the future!
His story stands alone—where most guests come on the podcast to talk about something specific, Drekken came on to just… talk. Podcasts go very differently when you’re conversing for the sake of conversation, and that’s what makes this episode successful.
So sit down, strap in, and get ready for some great storytelling—Chatting with Casey episode seven is underway!

I wrote this sponsored post on behalf of The Mobile Shop. All opinions are 100% mine.
Now that I’m a Dad myself, I’ve started seeing fatherhood in a whole new light.
Getting the right gift for anyone takes a lot of effort. Handmade stuff is super cute from young children, but as they grow older, the effort on those gifts wanes with results that are sometimes… not so stellar.
With three sons who weren’t the most adept at gift-giving, I can’t count the number of ugly sweaters, gaudy ties and gift cards to the hardware store my Dad racked up over the years. My Dad wore a uniform of white dress shirts and dress pants six days a week for work— how much of that did he possibly need? But now, as I raise kids myself, I understand the value of practical gifts that add value to his life instead of ones I got “just ‘cuz.”
And it being 2018 and all, one gift that keeps on giving is technology—specifically the kind that goes wherever you do.
The World’s Catching Up—Smartphones and Semolina in the Same Shop? Oh, My!
With a couple of decades under its belt, the cellphone’s no longer this device ill-understood by the generations that came before us. My parents use social media to keep up with what I’m up to (at least that’s what I tell myself), and both have smartphones of their own to play with. I think too many people my age don’t give our parents nearly enough credit, grossly underestimating how ubiquitous smartphones have become for users of all ages.
So ubiquitous, in fact, that you can now pick up new smartphones and accessories from the grocery store.
You read that right—you might not have known this, but The Mobile Shop locations are found at participating grocery stores where PC products are sold, offering a full selection of smartphones and plans from all major carriers to give you great value! In hundreds of locations from coast to coast, The Mobile Shop offers trusted advisors who’ll show you the best phone plan that meets your needs. You may even be able to earn hundreds of PC Optimum points! So whether your Dad’s the type who wants nothing to do with this new-fangled technology or the guy who helped you build your own computer as a teen, The Mobile Shop has the right fit for you.
The Mobile Shop—Because A Smartphone’s a Great Thing to Get The Man Who Has Everything!
The world isn’t as clear-cut as it used to be. We buy cleaning supplies from the place once just sold books and rent movies from what used to be a search engine. We define masculinity differently than we did before and realise that everyone needs their own tools and resources to truly express themselves.
So this summer, I’ll be making the memories that we’ll look back on decades from now, and what better to do it with than my smartphone?
It’s 2018, y’all—time to make sure you have the device that gives you exactly what you need. And it couldn’t be more convenient with The Mobile Shop.
Make great choices out there!
Until the next,
